Mendy ‘s Bar Mitzvah P’shetel Turn the page for the bigger picture

Meet Mendy: The long awaited day is finally here. The hall is decked in beautiful flowers, the dessert buffet is top notch, but everyone’s attention is focused on Mendy. He takes a deep breath and Totty, standing behind him, holds his breath too. And then it happens. Mendy recites his Bar Mitzvah P’shetel like a pro. He knows the psukim by heart, pauses in just the right places, and even cracks a well placed joke to the delight of his proud audience.

You see Mendy standing tall. Behind it is a bigger picture. Nine years ago, Mendy’s mother got in touch with Hamaspik’s Guidance team. They helped him get full access to Hamaspik’s phenomenal all-encompassing services, honing his verbal, technical, and social skills over the years. Mendy had it in him all along. Hamaspik just gave him that little push.

AN ENJOYABLE EXPERIENCE (Re: Gateways to the World, Issue 81) I wanted to comment on your article about airports. It was very well-written, and the pictures were so beautiful. I really enjoyed all aspects of this piece. Thank you so much! It’s a wonderful thing that The Boro Park View is doing. Aviation Aficionado

(Re: Fright or Flight?, Issue 81) It was so validating to read about the airplane experiences, because yes, there are people who get not excited, but terribly triggered, at the thought of flying! And I am one of them. The article reminded me of the time our entire extended family took a flight to Toronto to attend a simcha, while my husband was stuck with me in the car, driving and driving and driving all the way there. You see, I wouldn’t dare step onto a plane; the thought alone sends me into a spin. Thank you for the validation and tips. Maybe, maybe I’ll be willing to try it one day. M.U.

RE: A LACK OF AWARENESS? (Inbox, Issue 81) Thank you to the “neighbor” who raised awareness about sick children who need to be kept indoors and away from other children. It bothers me so much when mothers pay no heed to the basic science of contagious diseases. In addition to protecting other children, don’t forget that keeping a sick child home from school and avoiding contact with others protect your child as well. EGGLESS AND EXCELLENT (Re: The Incredible but Inedible Egg, Issue 79) I love to read The Boro Park View and eagerly await it every Wednesday. I saw the article you featured about baking without eggs. I would like to share a great kokosh cake recipe that does not contain eggs. The dough calls for 5 pounds flour, 1½ cups sugar, 3 ounces yeast, 1½ cups oil, a drop of wine, and 5 cups water. It should be prepared like a regular kokosh cake dough. I hope your family enjoys it as much as mine does! A Reader

A NOTE OF THANKS In this busy and rushed lifestyle we all lead, I stopped and took a pen and paper to write to you this letter of hakaros hatov. Week after week, I am in awe of your publication. You find such interesting and timely ideas to feature in each issue! The articles are so informative and the content so rich. The advertisements seem to come alive, and the recipes are truly doable and delicious! Wishing you much continued hatzlacha. R. Morgenstern

YOUR VOICE WHY I COME TO YOU Dear store owner, I shop in your store instead of going uptown to find bargains, because tznius is the most important factor I take into consideration when dressing my children. And since you offer a fine selection of proper clothing, I do not mind paying a bit more for them. When you first opened in my neighborhood, you employed a few darling bubbies who knew when to advise me to size up to gain a few inches in the length or width of a skirt and who showed me how to fix a collar in a manner that would make it tznius’dig for my daughter’s skinny neck. I was recently in your store, and I noticed that you have a new staff. Granted, they are not Jewish and do not have to dress like I do, but I was upset at what they do look like. One solution that may rectify this would be to do as the bakery down the block did: They ordered smocks embroidered with the store logo, and their salesgirls wear this uniform so nobody sees what’s worn underneath. I like your merchandise and I would hate to look elsewhere to do my shopping, so please take this into consideration. A Yiddishe Mamme

* * * * * The primary reason for bringing a korban todah is to express gratitude to Hakadosh Baruch Hu for the miracles He performs. Doing so makes a kiddush Hashem, increasing and growing His name in this world. Interestingly, the korban is brought alongside 40 challos, and the Torah instructs us to eat the entire korban in one day. It is impossible for so much to be consumed in such a short time… unless many people are called to partake in the meal. Thus, the smaller time frame fosters publicity, And that is exactly the point! The more people who take part in a korban todah, the more people hear about the miracles, and the more it is mekadesh Shem Shamayim. Until the Beis Hamikdash is rebuilt, bim’heirah, our expressions of thanks are our way of effecting the very intent of this sacrificial offering. Through gratitude, we can make Hakadosh Baruch Hu’s name greater in this world. And as a side “bonus,” when we recognize the miracles in our lives, we merit more miracles, more bracha and more yeshuos.

PROGRAM WILL BE RUNNING

Did You Know? The mitzvah of davening with a minyan is sourced in this week’s parsha in the pasuk “V’nikdashti besoch Bnei Yisroel.” The Gemara in Brachos teaches that Hashem’s name should be sanctified through tefillah with a minyan. “It is amazing to note that nine men of great caliber cannot accomplish what ten simple, unlearned Yidden can!” Reb Moshe Leib of Sassov exclaimed. Indeed, the kiddush Shem Shamayim of a unified group is even more significant than individual greatness.

CHAPTER 5 RECAP: The aged banker plants seeds of doubt in Yechiel’s heart as he stands across him in stony silence. But Shabbesai Tzvi is quick to restore his confidence during Yechiel’s private audience with him.

T

he following two weeks were an exciting time for Yechiel Tomashov. True to Shabbesai Tzvi’s prediction, his employer agreed not to write to Yechiel’s family in Poland as long as his banking duties did not suffer. Gamliel Basnoun took him under his wing, taking him to several midnight meetings and explaining some of the more difficult concepts afterward. The mysteries of the Kabbalah filled Yechiel’s mind and intoxicated his soul. Toward the end of this period, Yechiel began to notice a change in Shabbesai Tzvi. A cloud seemed to settle over his features, and he grew more distant by the day. The forces of darkness had been aroused, he explained, and he would have to go into seclusion to battle them. One Shabbos morning, several weeks later, Shabbesai Tzvi arrived in shul unexpectedly just as the Torah scroll was being taken from the holy ark. He was dressed in resplendent silken robes, and he seemed in a state of high euphoria. He hugged and kissed the Torah scroll, before whispering something in the shul president’s ear. The president nod-

ded his agreement, and the crowd buzzed in excited curiosity. Even Rav Yosef Escapa, who disapproved of his former disciple, seemed pleased to see him. Shabbesai Tzvi was the third person called to the Torah. He opened the Torah scroll and stared at the letters for a few moments before closing it again. Then he squeezed his eyes shut and began to make the blessing over the Torah. “Blessed are You . . .” He paused. Then opening his eyes wide and stretching out his arms, he pronounced the Shem Hameforash, the Tetragrammaton, the unutterable Name of the Almighty. For a brief moment that seemed to last forever, the shul echoed with stunned silence. In the next instant, there was bedlam. Here and there, a lone man shook his fists in anger, but most of the people were exultant. Surely, Shabbesai Tzvi would not dare utter the Name, something only permitted by the Kohen Gadol in the Beis Hamikdash on Yom Kippur, unless he was indeed Moshiach. Men shouted and danced in the aisles. Women fainted in the women’s gal-

lery. Through the uproar, Rav Yosef Escapa stood rooted to his place, his face aflame with anger. When a semblance of calm returned to the shul, Rav Yosef raised his hands high into the air, and a hush fell over the delirious crowd. “Shabbesai Tzvi, step forward!” he called out. Shabbesai Tzvi stepped forward and lowered his eyes respectfully. “You were once my brightest disciple, Shabbesai,” said Rav Yosef, his voice cracking with emotion. “I loved you like my own child. You were to be the greatest achievement of my life, and now you’ve fallen to this? Where do you find the monumental arrogance to do what you’ve just done?” Shabbesai Tzvi remained silent. “Ay, ay!” moaned Rav Yosef. “I blame myself. I curse the day I introduced you to Kabbalah. I thought you were worthy, but you are not. Not only have you destroyed yourself, you’re also destroying some of the best young men of Smyrna. Ay, ay. You have blackened my life, and I will now go heartbroken to my grave. Shabbesai, I beg you. Repent. Swear to me on the lives of your good parents that you will never delve into Kabbalah again, and I will pray that you be forgiven. Will you do it?” Shabbesai Tzvi looked at his master’s wrinkled face and sparse

white beard. “You do not understand me,” he said quietly, “and therefore, you speak as you do. I have used the Kabbalistic formulas you yourself taught me, and I’ve penetrated the highest heavens. I’ve learned cosmic secrets unknown even to the ministering angels. I’m the anointed King of Yisroel, the Moshiach of the Lord of Yisroel. The time of old men has passed. Someday soon you will fall at my feet and beg forgiveness.” “I see there is no hope for you,” cried Rav Yosef. “You have been trapped and captured by the forces of darkness on your reckless ventures into the higher worlds. You are destined for a shameful end, and you will drag your foolish followers along with you. Ay, ay! To think that I have lived to see this dreadful day! I beg the Almighty to forgive me for what I’ve done.” On Monday, the rabbinical court of Smyrna placed Shabbesai Tzvi into cherem, excommunicating him and banning him from the city for ten years. The following day, Shabbesai Tzvi boarded a ship and sailed for Greece. * * * * *

Nearly seven years passed before Yechiel Tomashov saw Shabbesai Tzvi again. During this interval, letters from Shabbesai Tzvi arrived regularly from strange-sounding places across Thrace and Macedonia in northern Greece. The letters were addressed to one of the other followers of long standing and contained private messages to other members, as well as general messages to be read to the entire group. Meanwhile, great changes were taking place in Yechiel Tomashov’s personal life. Elazar Ashkenazi, his employer, passed away during the early summer of 1651 soon after Shabbesai Tzvi’s departure from Smyrna. Yechiel left the bank and went into the cloth trade. His contacts and outlets in Poland and Lithuania gave him a great advantage in the teeming marketplaces of the East. He was able to buy large quantities of the finest silks from Persia and cottons from Sudan at extremely low prices and ship them to Warsaw to be resold at substantial profits. He was widely known to have the finest fabrics in Asia Minor at the most reasonable prices. Occasionally, an order for silks would arrive from the imperial palace, and Yechiel himself would travel to Adrianople to deliver the cloth. In the palace, Yechiel was received with honor and even introduced to Sultan Mehmet IV, who was thirteen years old at the time, and his mother, Turhan Sultana. From then on, Yechiel brought exquisite presents for the royal family on his visits to the palace and was given precious gifts in return. By the time he was 25, Yechiel Tomashov had become a wealthy and important entrepreneur. Yechiel’s life was full. His financial achievements and con-

nections in the imperial palace brought him honor and respect in the Smyrna community. He became increasingly involved with Gamliel Basnoun and the other members of the group and gained a reputation as a serious scholar and a quick learner. Besides a full schedule of Gemara and Halacha, the group constantly reviewed the teachings of Shabbesai Tzvi and reread his letters. Although Shabbesai Tzvi was in exile across the Aegean Sea, Yechiel could still feel his powerful presence in the ancient streets of Smyrna. The thought of eventually returning to Poland slowly faded from Yechiel’s mind. In the summer of 1654, Yechiel received a letter from his father. “My son,” wrote Yankiv Tomashov, “we’re all proud of what you’ve accomplished in Turkey. It is a truly remarkable feat for a man barely 25 years old. But your mother and I miss you terribly and would like you to come home. Besides, it’s time you thought of marriage and a family. There are some good prospects regarding which we will tell you once you have returned. We look forward to the day you are married and living here, only making an occasional trip to Smyrna to oversee our affairs in the Empire. Please make arrangements to come home as soon as you can. We hope to see you before the winter.” The letter disturbed Yechiel deeply. He had known this day would come, and now it was here. Much as he missed his family and wanted to be with them, he could not envision living so far away, in a land where Shabbesai Tzvi was unknown. The time had come to tell his family that although he might visit from time to time, Warsaw would never again be his home. Yechiel made several attempts at a reply to his father’s letter, but he could not find the right words. Instead, he took a deep breath and composed a letter to Shabbesai Tzvi. He had never yet written to Shabbesai Tzvi, nor had he ever received a personal message in one of the letters to the others. Hoping Shabbesai Tzvi would forgive his audacity, he presented his problem in great detail and humbly asked if the Master could perhaps send him a brief message on this matter. Three weeks later, a letter from Shabbesai Tzvi arrived. It was addressed to Yechiel Tomashov. Yechiel washed his hands before he carefully slit open the envelope. It contained three closely written pages. His heart thumped in his chest as he began to read. “Go back to Poland, my precious child, and do as your parents wish,” wrote Shabbesai Tzvi. “Do not argue with them. They will not understand what draws you to Smyrna, and if you try to explain, it will only cause trouble between you. But do not despair. Circumstances will soon present

themselves that will let you come back to Smyrna on your own terms. If a year passes and you still have not managed to return, write to me from Warsaw, and I will tell you what you must do.” The letter went on to discuss some other matters and concluded with a blessing and a set of messages for the others. Yechiel read the letter several times before he gently touched it to his lips and put it away. He was thrilled beyond words. Shabbesai Tzvi had cared enough about him to write him a lengthy personal letter. His problem was solved. It didn’t matter that he hadn’t the faintest notion of what the circumstances mentioned in the letter might be. It was not necessary for him to understand. As long as he followed Shabbesai Tzvi’s instructions, he could not go wrong. In the autumn of 1654, Yechiel Tomashov journeyed to Poland. He made no mention of his desire to return to the Empire. By Chanukah, he was engaged to Esther Wolkenberg, the youngest daughter of Beinish Wolkenberg, one of the leading financiers of Warsaw. They were married toward the end of the winter. A short while later, Sweden invaded Poland from the north. The western part of Poland had been spared from the sword of the Cossacks, but now it crumbled quickly before the ruthless advance of the Swedish armies. The Tomashov family prepared to flee Warsaw if the situation were to deteriorate even further. In the meantime, his father, Yankiv, asked Yechiel if he’d consider returning to Smyrna for a while. Poland was in flames, attacked from all sides and crumbling from within. The future was uncertain at best. Perhaps the whole family would soon be forced to flee to the safety of the Empire. In the meantime, Yechiel could prepare the way. Yechiel feigned reluctance. He would agree to return to Smyrna, he told his father, but only if he could settle there on a fairly permanent basis. He was tired of living like a transient and did not feel that his new wife should be subjected to that type of life, especially so far from home. Besides, if he were truly settled, he could be more helpful to the family in the event the need arose. Grudgingly, his parents acknowledged the wisdom of his words and gave him their consent. A month later, Yechiel Tomashov and his wife Esther returned to Smyrna and purchased a house. The following year, their first son was born. They named him Netzach.

The western part of Poland had been spared from the sword of the Cossacks, but now it crumbled quickly before the ruthless advance of the Swedish armies.

Diaper and Household Essential Prices to Spike Due to COVID-19 Issues Rising commodity prices and lengthy shipping delays are about to hit consumers, with manufacturers warning that the cost of diapers, paper products, and other common household items will be escalating in the months and weeks ahead. ABC 7 reported that Procter & Gamble, which produces Pampers, Tide and Charmin, said that diaper prices will rise between 4% and 9% in September. Kimberly-Clark, which manufactures Huggies and Kleenex tissues, disclosed an upcoming June price hike last month and Coca-Cola and General Mills have also made similar announcements. According to NBC News, higher grain and shipping prices were blamed for the expected increases at General Mills, whose product line includes Cheerios and Gold Medal flour. A statement from Kimberly-Clark said that the increases “are necessary to help offset significant commodity cost inflation.” Whether the higher costs that will be charged to suppliers will ultimately be passed along to shoppers remains to be seen, but does appear likely. Logistics issues, including higher prices and shipping delays, have plagued consumers all over the world since the onset of the pandemic. Those problems became even more evident last month when the Ever Given, a massive ship capable of transporting 20,000 containers, got stuck while traversing the Suez Canal, blocking the vital supply route in entirety and triggering global losses of nearly $10 billion per day. It took six days to dislodge the Ever Given from the Suez Canal, which connects Asia and Africa and is normally on the route of approximately 50 ships each day. “Many companies continue to struggle with supply chain congestion and delays stemming from the pandemic,” said Jon gold, vice president of supply chain and customs policy for the National Retail Federation. “There is no doubt that the delays will ripple through the supply chain and cause additional challenges.”

Communal Demographics May Explain Brooklyn’s Low Vaccination Rates Vaccination rates in Brooklyn may be the lowest anywhere in the state, but multiple factors may account for the disparity. According to New York State data, as of April 24, just 22.81% of Brooklynites had been fully vaccinated, with Bronx residents lagging slightly behind at 23.03%. But those numbers are likely due to change soon, with more than a dozen counties trailing behind Brooklyn in the number of residents who are already partially vaccinated. But Brooklyn’s slow start may be attributable to other factors,

74 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / April 28, 2021 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

according to Boro Park 24. Three-quarters of the population in Boro Park alone is under the age of 50, a demographic that only became eligible for vaccinations on March 22. And with only those sixteen and up now approved to be vaccinated, a significant percentage of the population still cannot be vaccinated. Three COVID-19 vaccines are available at this time, but only the Pfizer shot has been approved for use in sixteen- and seventeen-year-olds, and studies are currently underway to determine if it can be safely administered to twelve- to fifteen-yearolds. Mayor Bill de Blasio and New York City Health Commissioner Dave Chokshi have put forth a concerted effort to dispel misinformation about the vaccine. In a conference call with reporters, Chokshi said that the risks of contracting COVID-19 are far greater than any potential concerns about side effects of the vaccine. Mitch Katz, CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals, said that his agency would work hard to ensure that accurate information is provided to the local community, and that rabbanim have been on board with the ongoing vaccination push. “In fact, they have censured some of their own members who suggested that vaccines were not a good idea because a basic tenet of Judaism is the protection of life and protection of your community,” said Katz. “The vaccine does both of those things. The overwhelming view of rabbis is that [vaccines] are a very important intervention.” While reports have surfaced of people contracting COVID-19 after being vaccinated, those numbers are falling within expected ranges, according to CNN. Recently released data from the Centers for Disease Control showed approximately 5,800 COVID-19 cases out of 77 million fully vaccinated adults in the United States, numbers that exceed the 95% effectiveness rate promised by Pfizer and Moderna. “To date, no unexpected patterns have been identified in case demographics or vaccine characteristics,” said the CDC.

Reporters Riled Over Cuomo’s Continued Press Ban He may be framing it as a COVID-19 issue, but members of the media are none too pleased with Governor Andrew Cuomo’s refusal to allow members of the press at his press conferences in recent months. According to the Associated Press, the last time the governor allowed live media at one of his press conferences was in December. Previously, when his popularity had been soaring, Cuomo allowed a limited number of masked and socially distanced reporters to cover his press conferences, and he often engaged in lengthy question-and-answer sessions with the media, reported USA Today. Cuomo has been dogged by an ever-growing list of scandal

accusations and criticism over the past few months. He has maintained that reporters haven’t been allowed at his media events because of pandemic restrictions, despite having held multiple press conferences outdoors and in massive venues like the Javits Center. Reporters have been allowed on some Zoom conferences, giving the Cuomo team the ability to hand-pick reporters, limit follow-up questions and even terminate calls, something that happened last week to one member of the press who was disconnected mid-sentence when pressing Cuomo on his potential resignation. “When we get back to normal with COVID, then we’ll get back to normal with press conferences,” said Cuomo. That statement doesn’t sit well with many in the state, including Blair Horner, legislative director for the New York Public Interest Research Group, who noted that it is the media’s job to ask the questions that the public wants answered. A statement by the Journalists Association of New York described the issue as an “affront to the public that the governor serves.” “These restricted-access events are a blatant misuse of taxpayer dollars in an attempt to bolster the governor’s image while at the same time attacking the public’s right to know.”

It is a white paper card, somewhat larger than your average credit card. And, yes, you definitely want to hang on to it. “It” is the official Centers for Disease Control COVID-19 vaccination card, given to every person who is immunized against the coronavirus. The card lists vital information, including your name, date of birth, the date and location your vaccine was administered, as well as the manufacturer name and lot number. And like any other immunization record, it should be safeguarded for future use as proof of immunization, according to The Washington Post. Experts recommend taking pictures of your vaccine card and storing the original in a secure location. Michael Knight, assistant professor of medicine and patient safety officer at George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates, suggests bringing your vaccine card to your next visit with your primary care physician to be added to your existing medical records. While places such as Staples and Office Depot are offering free laminating for COVID-19 cards, not everyone is on board with the idea, given that booster shots will likely be needed in the future to maintain immunity. “When you get your booster dose, they can add that booster dose to your personal record so you can keep all that information in one place,” explained Kelly Moore, deputy director of the Immunization Action Coalition. “For that reason, laminating it might not be the best idea because it is a living record.” Even if you lose your original card, there is no need to panic, since the data was recorded at the location where

An innovative new landscaping project is now underway on Governors Island, with a family of sheep brought in to munch on an all-you-can-eat buffet of unwanted plants. A statement released last week by the Trust for Governors Island announced that five sheep had been brought to the island to maintain the beauty of Hammock Grove. Flour, Sam, Evening, Chad and Philip Aries will be spending four to five months on the island, dining to their hearts’ content on herbaceous plants, saving gardeners the effort of having to weed Hammock Grove. “The ‘shear’ genius of the idea lies in its simplicity,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio, thanking the sheep by name for doing their part to “bring New York City baaack,” and adding, “Bon appetit, fellas.” Mugwort and phragmites, favorites of sheep, are among the invasive plants that have been crowding out other greenery on Hammock Grove. Having the sheep graze on them will break down and weaken those species, which will also prevent them from flowering and spreading seeds that will promote further growth. The sheep have been described as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution to the island’s weed problem and are considered to be a better choice than goats and other animals, which could potentially wreak havoc on tree bark and other noninvasive plants. Clare Newman, president and CEO of the Trust for Governors Island, was upbeat about her new gardening team, saying, “Our new sheep employees have arrived at the perfect time, and we welcome their contributions to help protect the natural landscapes of Governors Island.”

CHAPTER FIVE RECAP: Osher

wonders why Rabbi Reiness is so set on living in Acco, and reminisces about how he first met Rabbi Reiness and agreed to come to his yeshivah.

A

few yards past the entry to the Reiness family’s apartment was another steel door, and beyond that was Sarah Reiness’s world. This was where their private home was located; none of her husband’s youths came in there. She conducted her life there in a tranquil setting, speaking to her married children on the phone, arranging her calendar, frying tuna patties for the boys, and painting the sea. She had already completed seven oil paintings that she’d named The Sea, all in the two years since they’d moved from Haifa to Acco. They were all painted from the same angle, and were of similar style, but the hues, the boats, and the people on the sandy beach were different in each painting, as if they were chapters in a story. The paintings hung side by side on the walls of the small living room, and anyone who looked at them could see that the paintbrush had been wielded by an amateur. But Sarah loved them anyway — and so did her husband Elazar. The latest painting was the most beautiful of them all. “That’s me.” Elazar pointed to a spot in the darkening brown background. “And these are the boys.” “How did you realize?” she murmured. “Well, because those were really the colors of the sand and the waves yesterday, and this was exactly where we sat before sunset.” She raised her head from the calendar she was perusing. “Right.” She grinned. “It’s the

first time I managed to get you all there. And you sat for quite a long time, hardly moving, so you gave me a chance to paint the scene. Just this spot” — she pointed with a pen toward the outer edge of the small circle in the painting — “kept moving.” “Osher,” Elazar said, still gazing at the large canvas. “But I see you were able to capture him sitting nicely.” “That’s only in the painting. He

“Do I know?” He sighed. “I wish I would know what is bothering him and what isn’t.” “How hoarse?” “It changes. Sometimes more, sometimes less. I guess it depends on how he feels.” “Well, you’ve learned something, then.” She smiled and closed her calendar. “Try to make him feel good, and you’ll see if it helps the hoarseness. If not, we’ll talk about it again. Do you want supper?” “I ate with the boys downstairs.” “My question is if you want to eat again.” “No, thanks. I need to prepare the evening shiur.” “Okay, b’hatzlachah,” Sarah said, and opened her calendar again. After a second, she shook herself, stood up, and walked into the kitchen. She puttered around there for a few moments and returned with a cup of lemonade and a few cookies on a plate. “Here you go,” she said. “And if you think that Osher’s hoarseness is the type that can be helped by lemonade, I’d be happy to send him a bottle.” She returned to the kitchen, took out five large lemons from the basket, and began to scrub the peels with a sponge. Across from her, over the ceramic backsplash, was a long, narrow window, and it was open now. She pulled aside the curtain and went back to her lemons. The ancient wall outside peeked at her from the darkening evening. There was once a bustling city called Acco, which had served as an important hub in Eretz Yisroel. And although that city was slowly sinking and fading, it was there that her husband had wanted to move. Of course, there were plenty of Jewish families here, as evidenced by the two chadarim and the Bais Yaakov school in the city, all of which were thriving. But anyone who heard about their move wondered about it, and rightly so.

Why had they left a home and an established community in Haifa to travel northward, to this place? would have ruined the idyllic scene if I would have painted him, for example, getting up, or walking closer to the water, or suddenly lying back.” “But if this was his idyll at that moment, then that was the best thing for him,” her husband said. He turned to face her. She was silent for a long moment, and then sighed. “I can erase it and paint him again. Not that I remember where he was at the exact second when the sun began to slip behind the horizon, but it doesn’t make a difference. I anyway decided not to go for accuracy as far as he is concerned.” “Yeah, so just leave it this way,” Elazar said. “It’s nice to see him blending in like that with the others.” “Is he not doing that?” Elazar was quiet. “He’s only been here four days,” he said finally. “It’s hard for me to decide.” “You usually don’t need more than a half hour to gauge such a thing.” “That’s right, but perhaps it’s not enough in his case.” He sat down at the small table. “He seems to be constantly hoarse,” he said suddenly. She raised her eyes again. “Does it bother him?”

84 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / April 28, 2021 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

Why had they left their home and an established community in Haifa to travel northward, to this place? Well, she knew the motivation behind the decision, but she felt like the chances of success were so miniscule, and feared that Elazar would be disappointed. In fact, “disappointed” was insufficient to describe what someone would feel like after investing as much as he had all these years, if, chalilah, everything would fall apart. She heard a shout in Arabic from downstairs, further along the alley. Baruch Hashem, they lived in relative harmony with their Arab “cousins”; otherwise, life here would be intolerable, and Elazar would be compelled to give up his dream. She poured the lemon juice into a pot and turned on the flame. The breeze blew the curtain around, and the pots and kettles that she had embroidered onto it thirty-one years earlier flapped their covers and spouts at Sarah. A small stain grinned at her impishly from the edge of the green kettle, and she dipped a spoon into the pot and sprinkled some lemon juice onto the stain. Whatever the stain was from, lemon juice was a surefire way to get rid of it. One day, she should paint the sea from this angle. The window and curtain would serve as a built-in frame for her painting, and she’d start a new series. They would be different from the ones in the living room, because from here, she could see little of the waterfront across the street. The window was too high. But she could see the waves and the edge of the old wall very clearly. Sarah carefully counted out several tablespoons of sugar and then added water. Elazar appeared in the doorway just as the drink was ready. “Preparations for Shabbos have begun already, baruch Hashem,” she informed him as she wiped down the counter. “I prepared the lemonade tonight. And I actually made some extra, for your Osher. Do you want to take a

bottle for him?” “Hmm,” he said, taking a seat. “He’s still groping a bit, not really finding himself. I would want to know what his parents have to say about everything, but I don’t want to pressure him, to push him too hard.” “And do you think that lemonade will push him too hard?” she asked gently. “If I would know exactly what it would do to him, I wouldn’t be deliberating like this.” His fingers raked his whitening beard. “I don’t know if he’ll like it; I see that he chafes from too much personal attention.” “He didn’t object to sleeping here upstairs.” She lowered her voice, though it was clear that their voices did not carry from the kitchen to the room where the three boys lived on the other side of the dividing door. “No, but I think that’s more because of his pedantic nature, not because he was looking for the homey feeling.” Sarah carefully finished emptying the contents of the pot into the last bottle she’d prepared. Then she transferred the bottles to the windowsill to cool down. The pleasant scent of lemonade filled the kitchen. “Is he the sourpuss type?” she asked suddenly. Elazar chuckled. “Osher? Not at all. Are you afraid he’ll suspect that I’m hinting to him to make lemonade out of the lemons in his life?” “Will he suspect that?” “No, because he’s not a sourpuss.” “So if your only concern is that you don’t want to initiate something too close, like giving a bottle of lemonade just to him, then send it to him anonymously.” He shifted the yarmulke on his head. “Anonymously?” he echoed. “Yes. Put it near his bed tonight. Even if he guesses who it’s from, he will see that you are not hovering over him, proven by the fact that you didn’t give it to him yourself.” “You have a point,” Elazar said slowly. “I think it’s a good idea.”

do it. To find me fast, not say a word, and then let me get up in the morning and discover this low, wide glass bottle on my night table, with a typed note that it was lemonade, made with natural ingredients, with a Badatz hechsher. Maybe it was payback for the surprise I’d prepared for her when she got back from Belgium. If you ask me, it’s strange to give back lemonade in exchange for cheesecake, but that’s just a little strange. Stranger, still, is how she managed to get it in here. She must have sent it through someone, either Reb Elazar or Yeruchem or Shlomo. And whoever it is is apparently a very good actor, because when I pointedly drank the lemonade in front of them, no one made any sign of recognizing the bottle or anything. I don’t know whom to suspect. Yeruchem didn’t pay any attention to it altogether. Shlomo just noted that whatever I was drinking looked like something sour. Reb Elazar answered amen to my bracha, and that was it. Perhaps Reb Elazar is the one who is in touch with Tatty, Mommy and Ariella? Strange. I told him that I’d informed my parents of my transfer, and how they hope time and again that I’ll succeed in whichever new place I am at. It was not a lie; they really hope that. And the fact that they only know that I transferred to a new yeshivah, but not where that yeshivah is, makes no difference. It’s only for a trial period, anyway. If I like it here, I’ll tell them where I am. Why should they be disappointed for no reason? But Ariella already knows. Or maybe she doesn’t? I’m totally confused. I need to call her and find out what my parents know and what they don’t. She can put on a show for the whole world, this talented sister of mine, but I won’t fall for it.

first draw a sketch on paper. Then you choose a color and begin to plan the measurements. Did you see Matari doing it?” “Shlomo Matari, the professional carpenter?” “Right. So, then he calculates how he can get as much as possible from each plank, because it’s a shame for pieces to go to waste. You arrange the shapes along the length and width,

front yard, and from there he went out to the street. The residents on the block seemed to be a mixed bag. Most of the homes belonged to Arabs, but not all of them. He crossed the street and stood there, on the other side, staring dreamily at the sea. When he was little, Ariella had taught him how to dream. Oh, he’d already known on his own how to dream; he did it often, even without realizing it. But she had taught him to give his dreams color and shape. Perhaps she was here, somewhere nearby. Walking around the area, just waiting for a phone call to thank her for the lemonade. She had surely set up some type of trap for him, and was just waiting for him to ask her how she had been able to get the drink right to his bedside. But no, he wouldn’t call her. What did she think? That he was a puppet? A toy dog? That she could do what she wanted and he had to play by her rules? With a sigh, he bent down to the beach and grabbed a fistful of seashells. He walked along the waterline, gently tossing in one shell after another. They got swallowed up by the deep green-blue that grew darker at his feet. “Osher?” Someone was approaching in a run. Osher didn’t turn around. “Osher, how many times do I have to call you?” Oh, the never-ending question that all his friends and rebbeim always had: how many times they had to call him, and why he hadn’t heard, or why he lost track of where he was… Now he certainly had heard his name being called, but he didn’t want to show it. “Hmmm?” He turned around languidly, and found Yeruchem standing behind him. “Reb Elazar is calling you. He’s in his car.”

“If all you can do in this carpentry shop is block my light, I’ll forfeit the pleasure of being your tutor.” and then check how you can use the space on the plank.” He pointed to the table. “That’s the standard size, 2.4 by 1.2 meters.” The new boy yawned. Dovid didn’t notice; he leaned closer to the pink panel. “It’s supposed to be a desk or something. Do you see the paper Shlomo left here?” “I see it, but I don’t understand a thing.” “So let me explain it to you. This is —” “No, don’t explain it again. It was already boring the first time.” “Really!” “Yes, really.” “So please, step out.” Dovid nodded toward the door. “Rabbi Reiness thought you’d be happy to get some background and explanations. But if all you can do in this carpentry shop is block my light, I’ll forfeit the pleasure of being your tutor. Out! Do you understand?” Osher studied him. Dovid was a few years older than him, and taller by at least a head and a half. Uneasy at being stared down by eyes under heavy, knitted eyebrows, Osher didn’t take a chance. He dragged his feet into the

“Oh,” Osher said, and then remembered to murmur, “Thanks.” He quickly turned back toward the house. “Osher!” The rabbi’s warm smile as he got out of the car welcomed him. “Osher, do you want to come with us to a wedding in Tzefas?” Osher squinted. “Huh? Whose wedding? What’s the connection to me?” “The fact that you live and learn in my place isn’t enough of a connection?” The rabbi’s eyes were smiling. “I’m just afraid that I’ll be bored there. It’s the wedding of a distant relative — one of my cousins is marrying off a daughter — but none of my sons are able to join me; they live in the center of the country, and it’s too far of a trip. But this cousin knows about my young friends whom I found in my old age.” The rabbi’s smile broadened. “He already told me clearly that anyone who comes along with me is invited with pleasure.” Osher’s intense expression grew even more guarded. “So you decided to take me along?” he finally inquired. “You, together with someone else.” “Who?” “Dovid.” The boy stiffened. “He already ran to tell you how he threw me out of the carpentry shop?” “Actually, he told me that he was a bit hurt by how you spoke. But let’s not talk about that now. If we want to get to the wedding on time, you need to get ready. I’m waiting for you.” “Fine,” the boy said tonelessly. “Not that I understand how an almosttwenty-year-old guy as tall as the ceiling can get hurt by something I said, but who cares. Fine. I’m coming up.” “He gets insulted the same way a sixteen-year-old who’s the height of the window gets insulted. When it comes to these kinds of things, where your head reaches makes no difference.” Reb Elazar held the car door open. “Hurry, Osher, I’m waiting for you.” To be continued…

CINNAMON BABKA STICKS

CINNAMON CARAMEL SAUCE

An easy and craveworthy treat!

Caramel sauce is liquid gold that adds magic to anything it touches. Pour it over ice cream, swirl it into brownies, dip your apples in it... the options are endless!

CRUMBS 1 cup flour 1 cup sugar

INGREDIENTS

½ cup oil

1 cup sugar

Pinch of salt

¼ cup water

PASTRY

½ cup heavy cream

12 oz. 5-inch puff pastry squares

¼ cup (½ stick) butter

½ cup brown sugar

¼ tsp. cinnamon

3 tsp. cinnamon

¼ tsp. salt

5 tsp. Oil

DIRECTIONS

Oil spray DIRECTIONS 1. Mix the crumb ingredients, and then set aside. 2. Preheat the oven to 375°. 3. On a floured surface, roll out two squares of dough. 4. Mix the sugar and cinnamon. 5. Spread 1 teaspoon of oil evenly onto one square of dough. Sprinkle this with approximately 1½ tablespoons of the cinnamonsugar mixture.

1. Combine the sugar and water in a heavy-bottomed pot. Stir briefly to combine. 2. Turn the flame to medium-high heat. Do not stir or touch the pan until the sugar has caramelized. The mixture will go from clear to amber, and keep careful watch as the sugar darkens quickly once it starts to caramelize. When it reaches the color of a new copper penny, remove it from the heat. 3. Immediately add the heavy cream and mix to combine.

6. Place the second square of dough on top.

4. Add the butter and mix.

7. Cut this “sandwich” carefully into ½-inchwide strips.

5. Add the cinnamon and salt, and stir.

8. Twist the ends of each strip in opposite directions to form a spiral shape. Lay the strips on a greased baking sheet. 9. Repeat the above steps with the remaining dough.

6. Allow the mixture to cool. Then transfer it to a sealed container. Note: Caramel will keep in the fridge for several weeks. It also freezes well.

10. Spray the babka sticks with oil spray, and sprinkle generously with the crumbs. 11. Bake for 17 to 20 minutes.

UPSIDE-DOWN STICK Y CINNAMON BUNS 98 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / April 28, 2021 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

UPSIDEDOWN STICK Y CINNAMON BUNS These soft and buttery cinnamon rolls are baked in a indulgent caramel sauce, resulting in a sticky treat that’s perfect for an upsherin spread or any other special occasion.

INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

4 cups milk 1 cup oil

1. In a large pot, heat the milk, oil and sugar until just below the boiling point.

1 cup sugar

2. Allow this to cool for one hour, until just warm.

2 packets active dry yeast (¼ oz. each)

3. Sprinkle the yeast over the milk, and let it sit for one minute.

9 cups flour, divided

4. Add 8 cups of flour. Stir until just combined, leaving the batter a bit lumpy.

2 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. baking soda 1 T. salt FILLING ½ cup (1 stick) butter 2 cups sugar 4 tsp. cinnamon CARAMEL 3 cups brown sugar 1½ cups corn syrup

5. Cover with cling wrap and set aside in a warm spot for one hour. 6. Add the baking powder, baking soda, salt and the remaining 1 cup of flour. Mix thoroughly to combine. 7. Divide the dough in two. On a floured surface, roll out the first dough into a very thin, large rectangle. 8. To fill the dough, melt the butter and spread half of it evenly over the entire dough. Sprinkle half the cinnamon and half the brown sugar over the butter. Roll the rectangle into a tight log, jelly-roll style. 9. Slice the log into approximately ¾-inch-thick buns.

1½ cups (3 sticks) butter

10. Repeat the above steps with the other half of the dough.

2 cups salted, roasted pecans, chopped

11. To prepare the caramel sauce, place the brown sugar, corn syrup and butter into a medium pot, and stir over medium heat until melted. 12. Pour the sauce into greased 9x13” pans. (You will need approximately 6 to 8 pans.) Top with pecans. 13. Place the buns 1 inch apart on top of the caramel and nuts. Cover the trays and allow the buns to rise for an additional 20 minutes. 14. Bake at 375° for 20 to 25 minutes. Wait 10 minutes, then invert the buns so the caramelized bottoms are on top.

The Alef-Beis Velt series is a household name. In this candid interview, R’ Zishe Schmeltzer of New Square, author and narrator, shares how his own childhood struggles pushed him to create these charming books and recordings, to help children master step one of reading. His tapes have captured children’s hearts for decades — whether on the plastic cassettes of not-so-long ago or on CDs — revolutionizing how they learn and love alef-beis.

How did you get into chinuch? Personally, I struggled in cheder as a child. I had a good head, but I was also blessed with extra energy, so I was written off as a wild kid. Years later, as a yungerman, I substituted as a melamed for young children, and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It was an opportunity for me to make good on my past and ensure that no child was misjudged on my watch. I remained a melamed for many years after that, and today, even though I have a different parnassah, I still welcome and cherish subbing opportunities as teaching is a passion I won’t give up.

Where are you currently employed? I’m a fundraiser for Skverer mosdos. I grew up in New Square when it was a small kehillah of 60 families and the previous Skverer Rebbe, zt”l, was able to have a close kesher with everyone. He was especially warm to children, and I was zoche to be close with him. When I was three years old, I would sing for the Rebbe. Those encounters gave me such a boost; they were my time to shine. Once, after I sang, the Rebbe snuck five dollars into my hand. Another time, he put a ten-dollar bill into the pocket of my suit. The Rebbe wasn’t in the habit of handing out dollar bills, and ten dollars was no small sum

Now that you’re on the other side of the melamed’s desk, what’s your take on the chinuch of youngsters? I feel that children should be taught everything as they show understanding and readiness, moving ahead at their own pace as opposed to teaching them alef-beis, nekudos and Chumash all in one year, regardless of their ability. They should move up to the next level or class only when they seem mature enough to handle it. And if they aren’t, they should stay at the same grade level for another year. If a child grows into a bachur or adult who cannot read, it is debilitating. It’s not worth pushing them ahead. I’m speaking from personal experience; I struggled with the difference between sin and shin until I was an adult. Besides affecting one’s day-to-day

achievements, feeling this failure affects one’s self-esteem. How can children be happy if they don’t know the Gemara? We want happy children. We want them to feel success. Teaching them on their own level and according to their own ability gives them the chance to succeed.

How did you teach alefbeis in your classroom? I tried to make it exciting for the children, so I would teach them by breaking down the kriah into simple, familiar words. For example, it was usually around Purim that the children would be learning the aef-beis, so if a child told me he’d be dressing up as a policeman on Purim, I wrote him down phonetically in alef-beis, “Moi-shy will be a poh-lees man.” If Ari was going to be a monkey, I wrote, “A-ri will be a mun-kee.” Similarly, when I assigned Shabbos party nosh to the children, I wrote down for them to bring a “lo-lee,” “pre-tzels,” and so on. Reading these easy Yiddish notes became fun;

they held onto them and reread them time and again. I peppered my lessons with such exercises, involving the children and making them use their brains.

What inspired your incredible Alef-Beis Velt book? In one of my early experiences in the classroom, I had an aha! moment when I thought to teach the alef-beis as pictures! It wasn’t my own concept. Talmidim of the Baal Shem Tov write that we should teach children the alef-beis using meshalim (parables) and pictures, so the children can relate to them on their own level. The Meor Einayim elaborates with examples. For an alef, he suggests drawing a water carrier’s pole, with the buckets on either end. Similarly, the Chukas Yisroel says one can draw the kamatz like a beard. These visual elements make the material much easier to grasp and more fun to learn.

How interesting! What efforts were involved in the making of the book and tape? For the book, I had to think of the nekudos stories and get an illustrator. The illustrating and printing was a big expense. For the tapes, I went to a studio to narrate the story, and I paid for the music. We also produced slides of

108 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / April 28, 2021 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

it and recently translated the book into English.

How was the idea originally received? It was very popular; parents loved it. Many gedolim also endorsed and lauded my work, because they knew how important it was, especially for children who were having difficulties learning to read. They knew how many Yiddishe kinder had left the fold, r’’l, due to a lack of motivation and self-esteem stemming

from not being able to read. The Kashauer Rebbe told me he never gave haskamos, but he gave my book a haskamah because he knew how many children went downhill in Yiddishkeit because they never mastered reading alef-beis. Still, as with many new concepts, there were those who weren’t familiar with the seforim quoted above. They felt it was wrong to turn alef-beis into pictures, and they went to rabbanim in an effort to ban the series. When one of the naysayers went to the Spinka Rebbe with his argument, the Rebbe refused to endorse a campaign that would cause a Yid to suffer a loss. The Yid asked him, “Will I suffer consequences for causing him agmas nefesh?” Yes,” the Rebbe replied. “If you mean it lishmah, then it should be with the knowledge that tzaddikim do things they feel is right despite the possible consequences. Because, yes, there are definitely consequences for hurting another Yid.” This was the end of this person’s “campaign”!

Can you share some memorable feedback? Over the years, thousands of parents have told me they had invested so much

in private tutoring for their children, yet nothing helped their child learn to read like my humble book and tape did — obviously, for a fraction of the cost of the private tuition. I worked hard to make my tapes pleasant-sounding so parents would enjoy hearing it in the background, and baruch Hashem, it seems like I was matzliach.

Your tapes keep children riveted to the stories, while imprinting the image of the alef-beis in their minds. When did you discover you had this talent? I loved performing as a child, and I was often in Purim plays. I also recall my first spontaneous skit as a young child, which included grammen I composed myself. I’ve had adults joke that they can’t talk to me because they’re still traumatized from the Lamed katchke getting lost in the forest!

As a veteran melamed, can you give our readers some chinuch tips? There are so many ways to make learning exciting and bring it to life. I often put on plays in the classroom. Then, instead of distributing nosh or prizes as incentives, I draw a gorel and choose a child to dress up as the protagonist in the story, with real props. One example would be Yosef Mokir Shabbos, with fish on a plate! Sometimes, a private tutor would come to pick up a child in the middle of a play, and I’d tell them to come back later, because the child would feel resentful about missing out. Melamdim should remember this, to be considerate of children’s feelings. In a similar vein, it’s important to keep in mind the feelings of children with individual needs. This often comes up in children with allergies who can’t enjoy the treats distributed in class. Another tip worth sharing would be to use plenty of visual aids while teaching. For example, when teaching about Pesach, I picked up pieces of matzah from a matzah bakery, and my wife boiled potatoes for karpas. The children then experienced the Seder in all its sensory glory, which helped them absorb everything they learned in class. I taught parsha this way, too. Another important point is to give children a chance to shmooze. Tell them to share how they helped their mother at home, about a snowman they built, about a new toy they have. Talking is good for children, both at home and in school. Similarly, besides learning with children at home, fathers should also make themselves available just to shmooze. Such conversations nurture warm relationships, which are the best gift you can give your child. One last point. If a child is academically challenged, invite him to bring a story to class, and make a fuss of that story. There are so many ways to make children thrive. Tap into the opportunities you get as a melamed or parent to produce happy, confident, accomplished Yiddishe kinder.

READING IS A MAGICAL ABILITY, REALLY, ONE THAT TAKES US TO SO MANY PLACES AND MAKES AVAILABLE TO US VAST OCEANS OF KNOWLEDGE. AT ITS HEART, LITERACY IS ABOUT THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE, A WAY FOR US TO CONNECT TO THOSE WHO CAME BEFORE US, THOSE WHO SHARE OUR INCREDIBLE WORLD NOW, AND A WAY FOR US TO TALK TO THE ONES WHO WILL COME AFTER US.

THE

ability to be literate, to read and write, opens so many worlds. Aside from the obvious benefits, such as being more successful in school and the world we live in, reading takes us anywhere, makes us feel a huge range of emotions, and enables us to have so many experiences that might be impossible for us to access otherwise. It sharpens our minds and helps us develop our higher-order thinking skills, enriches our stores of general knowledge and vocabulary, and affords us a welcome respite from the challenges and burdens of our day-to-day lives. Besides, as Yidden, we are the People of the Book, so reading, writing and learning are totally our things! Are you starting to pick up on a theme here? That said, what happens when children (and adults) grapple with this most necessary of skills? When they struggle to learn their alef-beis or English letters, to decode words, or to understand what they are reading? The ability to read, write and comprehend is so crucial — how do we respond when bright children have trouble with literacy?

Learning disabilities — or, the term I prefer, learning differences — are more common than you might imagine. These challenges may be present in as many as one out of every ten children, can take various forms, and generally have nothing to do with intelligence. In fact, the majority of children with learning disabilities have average or above-average intelligence. That brings me to one of my pet peeves, namely, the way the terms “learning disabled” (LD) and “dyslexic” are used in our community. (More on dyslexia later.) With shidduchim being such a central concern for us, “average” is sometimes used to mean “slow,” and “LD” to mean “very slow.” This is so far from the truth and does a great disservice to the many, many bright and talented people with learning disabilities in our communities. (Apologies for the digression, but I had to get that off my chest.)

Now, moving on. In order to understand how learning disabilities work, a little biology lesson is in order. The cells in our brains are called neurons. Each neuron has hairlike extensions at each end, called dendrites and axons. Neurons do not physically connect to each other. Instead, there are spaces between neurons, called synapses, and the axons and dendrites release and absorb chemicals called neurotransmitters to send messages between neurons. Neurons can send and receive many messages simultaneously. Think of the motherboard or processing units of a supercomputer, only infinitely more complex. In addition, although most parts of our brain can accomplish several tasks, there are specific areas that primarily process certain types of information. We each have a visual cortex, auditory cortex, and areas of our brain that filter infor-

mation or engage in higher-order thinking. Because of this complexity, there are so many factors that influence our ability to learn, process and comprehend. When I evaluate a child In my private practice as a special educator, the parents often ask me what is the one thing that is causing their child to struggle, so they can fix it. Is it vision? Or hearing? Here’s the thing: It’s so much more complicated than that. Children aren’t machines in which we can find the faulty part and repair it. Because of the many ways brain cells connect with each other, there is rarely just one area that is having an impact on learning. In addition, there are so many other things that are part of the larger picture — things like personality, family structure, physical or emotional challenges, or even medical conditions. It’s usually a combination of factors, and helping children

usually takes a multifaceted approach. It also requires a team effort. I like to say that children often do best when there is a team, and nobody knows which team member gets the most credit for the progress seen. It really does take a village…

Dyslexia is predominantly an auditory and language processing deficit. Young children with dyslexia can show certain characteristics before they start learning to read. They are often highly verbal but can have trouble with learning the words in songs or with rhyming words. They may have trouble remembering names of cousins or classmates, or even of common objects, and often describe things instead of naming them. They are often so adorably descriptive and so smart in the way they talk around things, it usually doesn’t occur to anyone that they are having a real naming, or word retrieval, challenge. They may retell stories and events with a tremendous amount of detail, but in a completely disorganized fashion, without a clear order of events. They are also often highly creative and talented, and have a

Learning disabilities — or, the term I prefer, learning differences — are more common than you might imagine. LET’S TALK ABOUT specific learning disabilities. The one that receives the most recognition is dyslexia. Yes, dyslexia can involve difficulties with visual processing, but no, it is not a vision problem. People with dyslexia don’t see things backward or as a mirror image, though they may read words that way.

unique, multidimensional way of seeing the world. Just so you know, dyslexia isn’t a disease that needs to be cured. However, we can help children with this challenge develop the skills they are missing and help them to learn in their unique way and to compensate in a world that is filled with linear thinking and learning styles. They can be highly successful as students and people, and usually are, but will always have that unique and remarkable dyslexic brain. Baruch Hashem for that! Our world is so much better for it. It is only when dyslexics start learning to read that the challenges become apparent — and even then, not always. Some children are so bright or have such remarkable memories that they can cover up their challenges for years. I’ve met adults who have spent their entire lives hiding their reading deficits, and they are capable and high-functioning adults who compensate in remarkable ways. However, that is the exception rather than the rule. In most cases, if the challenges aren’t apparent in the younger grades, they become obvious

challenge. Many students with dyslexia also have dyscalculia (trouble with math), dysgraphia (trouble writing), dysnomia (trouble with word retrieval and naming things), and often have accompanying difficulties with motor skills. These can include fine motor skills, which are used for manipulating small objects with the hands; gross motor, which is strength and coordination throughout the body; and sensorimotor, which refers to how one processes sensory information. About a third of students with learning disabilities have other contributing, or comorbid (I know,

Children with literacy challenges often have remarkable strengths and talents, and focusing exclusively on their deficits can negatively impact their self-esteem and possibly cause them to give up on themselves as learners. within the next few years. Students with dyslexia may struggle with learning to decode, with fluency, or comprehension, or any combination of the above. They may learn sight words more easily and memorize stories, which can mask the decoding difficulties, but eventually there are too many words for them to manage with memory alone. It is usually at this point that parents and teachers become aware of a decoding and/or comprehension deficit. Dyslexia rarely presents as a single

awful word, but I didn’t make it up!) challenges, such as trouble paying attention or anxiety. As mentioned earlier, there can be other factors that can lead to difficulties with literacy. I have seen many children who have trouble with social thinking and social skills. They may struggle to use and understand nonverbal communication and are often confused by nonliteral language. They have trouble making inferences or using abstract reasoning. These students are often hy-

perlexic, meaning that they can decode easily and fluently, but can completely fail to comprehend what they are reading. They are even more likely to have trouble with sensory and motor skills and tend to be more anxious. Their ability to pay attention is often uneven. They may hyperfocus on some things, be unable to focus on others, and have a hard time dividing their attention and transitioning from one area of focus to another. THEN I OFTEN SEE students who may not have specific learning differences but, for a variety of reasons, are simply unavailable as students. These include children with attention deficits. While not all students with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) have learning disabilities, their difficulties with paying attention often prevent them from using decoding and/ or comprehension strategies, or from becoming fluent. To develop fluency, students need to be able to consistently read longer passages without stopping, and difficulty with paying attention often leads to start-and-stop reading. Other students in this category are students with medical issues that make them feel too tired or unwell to function adequately as learners; children with too much stress in their lives, which can cause similar results; and students with mental-health challenges, such as anxiety disorders, depression, mood disorders and other mental health diagnoses. Obviously, children with undiagnosed and untreated hearing and vision prob-

lems are at risk as well. There are many other factors that impact literacy, but if I list them all, this will be a book instead of an article! When parents or educators are concerned about a student who is struggling with any aspect of literacy, it is advisable to observe them and track their progress and difficulties for several weeks to see if they continue to struggle. Extra attention from a family member or tutor can be helpful, as long as the interactions are positive. If that doesn’t seem to be enough, it is advisable to schedule a comprehensive evaluation administered by a competent professional. The purpose of the evaluation is to pinpoint the student’s areas of deficit and, more importantly, their strengths, and to formulate a plan to address their deficits while capitalizing on and encouraging their strengths. I cannot stress enough how important it is to focus on strengths. Children with literacy challenges often have remarkable strengths and talents, and focusing exclusively on their deficits can negatively impact their self-esteem and can possibly cause them to give up on themselves as learners. Most students need a multifaceted program, which may include working with a literacy specialist, receiving educational support such as a homework tutor, speech and language therapy to help develop decoding and comprehension skills, occupational and/or physical therapy to address sensory and motor issues, and classroom modifications. These may include preferential seating, visual aids, modified assignments and tests, repeated instructions, or frequent refocusing. In some cases, if students have already developed negative self-images, counseling can be helpful as well. As already stated, it’s all about teamwork. This may sound like a lot, but in my experience, students do better and improve more rapidly when all of their challenges are addressed from different angles by professionals in each field. PARENTS OFTEN ASK ME what they can do to help their child at home. The question seems backward to me. Parents love and support their children more than any professional out there. I am in awe of how committed parents are to helping their children in every way possible. Ultimately, the parents will be there for their child’s entire experience, while teachers and support staff change frequently. This section,

then, is written directly to parents. First, I applaud you for your unswerving dedication to your child/ children. Your love has a greater impact than you could ever imagine, and even when they seem frustrated, your children know that they are loved. That is tremendous. As far as advice, the first thing I can tell you is to read to your children, starting when they are babies. My next piece of advice is to read to them some more. And more. And more. Also, whether you currently enjoy it or not, your children will be so much more likely to pick up a book and read if they see you doing the same. Fill your home with books and become a family of readers. It makes a huge difference. Another crucial piece of advice is to talk to your children, and to do so all the time. You have lived in the world so much longer and have so much wisdom and knowledge to share. I know that many of you have large families and you often need to function as generals in an army. You should all be gebentched! Still, it is so important to find time to talk to and to listen to all of your children frequently. When children are curious, engaged and thirsty for knowledge, that transforms their learning experiences. As parents, you have so much power, and I have been fortunate to witness that power in person time and time again. I am humbled in the face of it. I wish every family and every child a beautiful journey on the path to learning and literacy. No matter what obstacles you face on that path, ultimately, the trip is an incredible one and the destination is priceless. Happy travels! Hendy Friedman has been a special educator since 1991. She has taught in self-contained classrooms and was the educational director in a special education program. She’s been running a private practice since 1998, specializing in evaluations, literacy, and social thinking and skills. Her private practice is now very limited as she is currently working toward her degree, something she never had time to do when her children were younger!

“DUVY, no!” I gasp. The object of my alarm is oblivious to my cries as he aims for the next stair, his overgrown curls bobbing to the rhythm of his ascent. Tenaciously gripping the rail, his back toward the street and the merciless pavement below, he scales the wrong side of the staircase, unprotected. My heart is drumming against my chest as I stand behind him, one flight down, hands outstretched and ready to catch him, just in case. My eyes are trained on his stubborn little feet, and I don’t like what I am seeing. “Watch your shoes,” I moan. And then I grimace — not at the terrifying sight, but at the sound, the discordant scratching of his brand-new patent oxfords against the cement as he drags his foot up yet another step. My neighbor eyes me strangely, and I know that look well. It is the same wondering glance I give mothers whose kids are confined to carriages and rigid positions to protect their starched linen Shabbos clothing or shoes that seem to be made of delicate brocade cloth. But this is different. Because, well… pictures. It’s the same reason I was browsing the shoe stores well before Purim, until I finally selected this cream pair that delicately hugs my son’s foot around the ankle. It will be my third try at getting Duvy’s adorable face, a dimple in each cheek, onto a photographer’s camera screen. And this time there is no room for error! Attempt number one ended with a shrieking infant, and a red, angry face taking center stage on each high-resolution photo. I never bothered to pick up my prints. Attempt number two was a long session. I paid overtime, and I came home with one breathtaking photo of a blooming July garden — and my son’s back (the only picture that didn’t boast dripping eyes or drooping suspenders). And this time, I just had to get it right. After all, how could my little tot become a boy without the must-have shot of a yarmulke haphazardly thrown above his overgrown afro? How could I part with his locks without having their unruliness frozen for posterity? And so, for the next few weeks, I take my shoe-guarding duties very seriously. Most of the time they’re tucked away, but on yom tov, when visiting, and at a simcha, I have no choice but to use them. And then I hold my breath from the minute I tie the laces until I can finally replace them with a trusty pair of Crocs that is getting an awful lot of use. Finally, there’s only one more Shabbos left until our scheduled photo session. I preside over my son on our afternoon walk like one possessed. My goal is too close to be forfeited now. On Motzei Shabbos, I shine them lovingly, admiring their gloss, perfect and intact. Monday at twelve o’clock, I knock at Morah Brachi’s door to fetch my son. My bundle of energy bursts out the door and into my hands. There’s a huge smile on his face — and a red, jagged scratch running from his eyes, down, down his cheek. “What happened to your face?” I choke as I examine the deep scratch. I am inclined to check for rabies. “Itzy scratched me,” he says. Note to Itzy’s mother: Trim your son’s nails. “I scratched him back! Like this!” Duvy’s making tiger motions now, and I eye him. I am so weary. I bathe my son, lather his curls in a thick layer of mousse, and tie the laces of his perfectly unscratched shoes. And I learn that Photoshop is one great piece of software. I just wonder if it can’t be used to erase scratches on shoes, too.

It’s my Chany on the phone again, and I don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know the reason for her call. Little Menachem is turning three in a month, and all we’ve been hearing about since the day he was born — smack in the middle of Iyar — is his upcoming upsherin. For Chany, every milestone is a reason to party. Her husband Yochi blinked the first time he walked into a decorated, well-lit dining room soon after their marriage. “One minute...” he said. “Is it my birthday?” “No, but you had a bechinah today!” Chany pointed out. In her element, she pulled out a chair and exclaimed, “Let the party begin!” And so Yochi quickly learned that in Chany’s home, a table set for two, replete with fresh flowers, hors d’oeuvres and printed menus, is like a chicken-and-potatoes dinner in mine. But as it is with all of the sugary things in life, he quickly and comfortably grew accustomed to their frequent and over-the-top celebrations. So of course, Menachem’s upsherin was being pulled off in true Chany style. The orders were all placed before Purim, and deposits were given to the hall, musician, jumping balloon rental, petting zoo and magician even earlier than that. If the printer was surprised with the large order — invitations, personalized take-me-home bags, place cards, menus, bentchers, and mini message notes where guests could write their heartfelt wishes — they didn’t show it. “Let me keep you up to date here, Ma,” Chany says to me now. “I was thinking that I should get the napkins hand-painted with Menachem’s name.” “A monogram?” I ask, but Chany doesn’t even hear me. “So, the thing is, do you think people will appreciate having an expensive napkin as a souvenir if it has Menachem’s name on it? Should

I just keep it neutral and go with a flower instead? This way they can at least make use of it later.” I feebly attempt to offer my two cents. “Isn’t it gonna be too florally then? You’re having real flowers, too, are you not?” “Ma! There is no such thing as too many flowers. No such thing!” I hear Chany fidgeting with her pen. She’s thinking hard. “Also, Ma,” she says at last, “how do I figure out appropriate entertainment for the adults and children? It’s a hard balance.” I don’t miss a beat. “Do you remember Chaim Aron’s upsherin? I think if you have someone take the microphone and tell the story, both adults and children will be highly entertained.” And my mind goes back to the day, over two decades ago, when my Chaim Aron, now a father of four, turned three.

proper heating, I wasn’t complaining. Finally, my son’s name was called. “Gershon Teitelbaum?” I got up from my chair, and the nurse directed me to a room. After a short wait, the doctor walked in. “No need for concern,” he said after listening to Gershon’s lungs. “I do think he can use a nebulizer, though.” With a flourish, he tore a paper from his pad. “One vial every four hours.” By the time I filled the prescription and walked up the three flights to my

nally defrosting and I flexed them to see if they had regained sensation. “Here in cheder, we usually make a matzav when a boy turns three.” Reb Shaul coughed. “Cheder feeren, pekelach… the whole thing.” If his response was soft and sensitive, like a flicker, mine was a brash blaze. The heat rose to my face and I began to tremble. “Today? You mean... Chaim Aron’s birthday is today?” Reb Shaul remained quiet. My body felt hot and cold, and I was flooded with shame. How could I have forgotten my yingele’s auspicious day? “Thank you,” I finally managed. “We’ll — we’ll collect the things we need and come over as soon as possible.” And that is how my husband was summoned home from work, a case of Bloom’s potato chips and a large bag of Lieber’s lollipops in his car. All of our children were gathered from their respective cheder and school classrooms and shepherded to Chaim Aron’s class to watch him say the alef-beis and lick honey. We snipped off his long blond locks in a side room of the cheder and perched his older brother’s outgrown kappel onto his freshly shorn head. And our lichtige peyos yingele, a woolen tallis katan lovingly placed on his diminutive frame, could not be any prouder as he placed crinkly blue potato chip bags into pudgy, outstretched palms. Watching Chaim Aron in his classroom chanting the alef-beis in a melodious tune, sweet, sweet honey dribbling from his adorable chin, I was filled with warmth that no frost, no matter how low the temperature, can diminish.

“Here in cheder, we usually make a matzav when a boy turns three.” Reb Shaul coughed. “Cheder feeren, pekelach… the whole thing.”

Back in the day, I was a nice version of the old woman who lived in a shoe. And yes, I had so many children that I always had what to do! It was a frigid day in January. The temperature was below freezing, dipping to less than ten degrees. Snow was starting to fall, and as much as my bed beckoned, my baby needed to see his pediatrician. He’d been wheezing the entire night, and since RSV was rampant then, I headed to the doctor to rule out the virus. I tugged my boots onto my exhausted feet, buttoned my heavy wool coat, and dug deep into my pockets in search of my gloves. A red Scottish blanket and plastic rain cover kept my baby nice and toasty in his stroller as I walked down the mostly deserted streets. I, on the other hand, was exposed to the elements, blustering gusts whipping my face. I kept throwing my fluttering shawl to the back, the plaid wool covering my mouth like a mask, but the winds fought on. The waiting room was a zoo. Coughs and barks of every decibel filled the air. But as long as there was

shoe-size apartment, I was drained and numb. The phone rang as soon as I stepped in. I dropped my blessedly sleeping baby onto my bed, placing a mountain of laundry around him just in case, and ran to get the phone. A masculine voice came through the lines. “Hello? Is this Mrs. Teitelbaum?” I wrapped the telephone cord around my icy fingers. “Yes. How can I help you?” “This is Reb Shaul, Chaim Aron’s rebbi. I —” Panic filled my gut. “Is everything okay?” “Baruch Hashem, your son is doing amazing,” Reb Shaul said. “A kleine tzaddik’l. It’s just… I just wanted to verify that we have the correct information down here. When is Chaim Aron’s birthday?” “Yud-Ches Shevat.” The date rolled off my tongue. I always took pride in remembering the birth dates of all my fourteen children, and sure enough, my memory did not disappoint. There was an uncomfortable silence. “Yud-Ches Shevat is today, Mrs. Teitelbaum,” he finally stammered. “Did — did you realize?” “And?” I asked, still horribly oblivious. My bright-pink fingers were fi-

* * * * *

And you probably expected some sort of rebuke here admonishing Chany on how all of this is shtussim and that the main thing is that the peyos yingele should be instilled with the love for Torah and mitzvos. But, no. I merely repeated the story to Chany so she could share it. Because, like I said, I am a nice version of the old woman who lived in a shoe.

‫‡ זכרם ברוך‬‰‫י‬ How apt is the theme chosen for Hatzolah of Boro Park's "United for Hatzalah" campaign. Always meant that nothing stopped our members;

not fear, nor illness, nor lockdown. Always meant that throughout the last year,

with all its drama and anguish, our members were there. But Always has another meaning this year as well.

ALWAYS &

Always is what we hold in our hearts, as we absorb the pain of the recent losses within our ranks. Five members, five of our team, five chaveirim, are gone in such a short span of time. Representing the entire spectrum of the Hatzolah family, we mourn the loss this year of a Founding member, PA, Coordinator, Paramedic, Service Director.

What can we say? They were always there, and they will always be in our hearts

THEY WERE THERE FOR US. ALWAYS. WILL WE BE THERE FOR THEM NOW? One million dollars for Hatzolah. Yes, we will be there. Like they were. Always. R' Shloimie Adler - B24 ‫ר' שלמה זלמן‬ ‫בן דוד דוב ע"ה‬

R' Anshi Lax - B36 ‫ר' מרדכי אנשיל‬ ‫בן יחזקל דוב ע"ה‬

R' Moishe Dovid Kish - B219 ‫ר' משה דוד‬ ‫בן יוסף מרדכי ע"ה‬

R' Shloimie was one of the founders of our Hatzolah; from the "older generation" yet oh, so young at heart. He was active, on call, until his very last day, living by the credo that "a day without responding to a Hatzolah call is a day without oxygen". Indeed, Hatzolah was his lifeline as he was ours. R' Shloimie never got old; he always wanted to help - and he did! Until his very last day.

R' Moshe's longstanding membership with Hatzolah was a shining outgrowth of his deep desire to help people. His connection began during the early years, when the fledgling organization had very few actual medical personnel, and he was the one they counted on for his PA expertise. He was on call constantly, saving countless lives through his illustrious partnership with Hatzolah. His medical expertise was legendary, and we counted on him, 24/7. He is a deeply missed and irreplaceable part of Hatzolah.

R' Yochanan was much more than just a Hatzolah member; he was a coordinator par excellence. His involvement on the leadership level was the fuel that made the organization run. R' Yochanan was a legendary dispatcher, dispatching calls from his home; Shabbos, Yom Tov, always. R' Yochanan lived Hatzolah. His creativity and innovativeness were the backbone of our fundraising events and even during his hardest times, when he was so sick and weak, he would beg to come and help, to do whatever he could with his waning kochos. How apt is the nickname given to him: "Mr. Hatzolah."

R' Anshi; his stamp was imprinted on every Hatzolah members equipment. Besides for being an active member, R' Anshi was the director of service and supplies. He packed the bags, those bags you see every member carry in to a call. It was Anshi's credit how each piece of medical supplies and equipment was clearly marked with the member's name organized and labeled so that each precious piece of life-saving equipment could be speedily located and utilized. It was a labor of love; he needed nothing for himself, it was all about saving lives. The same went for each ambulance; thousands of pieces of medical supplies and equipment all packed with love and laid out in perfect order, ensuring maximum speed and efficiency. R' Anshi was also the one who taught each new member how to drive the ambulance, how to get to the scene of the call safely and quickly. Indeed, his stamp is not just imprinted on every member’s equipment, it is engraved deep in their hearts as well.

A paramedic, Hatzolah became his family. R' Moishe Dovid lived Hatzolah. His specialty was the connections he formed, the deep, personal relationships. In his warm, quiet, unassuming way, he forged those connections that would be life-saving; connections with doctors, specialists, medical personnel, hospital staff, all to assist the patients in need. He didn’t just go on a call, he followed up and followed through, eager to assist way beyond the usual scope of Hatzolah. He became almost like a personal doctor to so many, helping them navigate the medical field, reach the right physicians, get to the right address. R' Moishe Dovid is also remembered for the innumerable overnight shifts he did, ensuring that Klal Yisrael's needs would also be met when the rest of the world was fast asleep. His heartfelt caring and supreme dedication made him a beloved figure, so deeply beloved, and so sorely missed.

Boro Park will always remember them. Their memory will live on in the vehicles we will purchase together to expand our fleet: three new ambulances, one new medic truck. They were there for us. Always. Will we be there for them now?

Why does the alef look like an alef ? In any other language, where the letters are just a random arrangement of lines and circles, this question is irrelevant. Thus, we will never delve into the structure of a capital “A” and why a lowercase “a” looks different. However, contrary to any other language, the holy letters of Lashon Hakodesh are Divinely designed and contain within them hidden secrets, esoteric thoughts and layers of meaning.

DIFFERENT FORMS OF GIVING Gimmel has several meanings. One of them, “to nourish until ripe,” we find in a verse in Bamidbar. It says, “The next morning, Moshe brought out the staves from the Holy of Holies, and all of Yisroel saw that the staff of Aharon produced (vayigmal) completely ripened almonds” (17:24). Paradoxically, the other meaning of gimmel is to wean: “The child grew and was weaned (vayigamal)” (Bereishes 21:8). At first glance, the concepts of being weaned and nourished seem contradictory. When you’re nourishing, you give. When you’re weaning, you cease to give. But in essence, this teaches us a beautiful lesson of what constitutes true giving: knowing when to give and when to cease giving. To refrain from giving is at times a different form of giving, so the two meanings of gimmel are actually one!

146 / THE BORO PARK VIEW

TWO IN ONE The Maharal observes that the hei’s design is comprised of a dalet and a yud. The dalet represents the physical world and the yud represents Hashem, the spiritual world (why this is so deserves a separate discussion). This teaches us, says the Maharal, that just as the dalet and the yud come together, so, too, Hashem wants us to imbue and uplift the physical world with spirituality.

LETTER OF TRUTH The tes is called the letter of truth. Why? The numerical value of tes is nine, and the number nine is a “true” number. What makes nine a “true” number? If you multiply any whole number by nine, the sum of its digits remains nine (e.g., 2x9=18, and 1+8=9; 8x9=72, and 7+2=9). This signifies the nature of emes: genuine and sincere, whichever way you look at it. Correspondingly, the gematria of emes is 441: alef=1, mem=40, tav=400. And when you add that gematria together, 4+4+1=9.

By: Esther Retek

LESSONS FROM THE YUD In his youth, Reb Yisroel of Ruzhin was taught that when he notices two dots next to each other, it is read as Hashem’s name. That night, the young Reb Yisroel was reading, and every time he reached the end of a verse — where there are two dots marking the conclusion — he uttered Hashem’s name. Surprised, his father asked him why he was pronouncing Hashem’s name after each verse. The boy responded, “My teacher taught me that whenever I see two dots together, I should pronounce Hashem’s name.” His father turned to him and explained, “The dot, the yud, represents a Yid. When one Yid is beside another, respecting the other, then Hashem dwells between them. But when one Yid is on top of the other, thinking he’s better or more important than the other, then that’s the end of the pasuk, creating a separation between a Yid and Hashem.”

FIRST CREATION The first verse in the Torah is: .”...‫“בראשית ברא אלקים את השמים‬ the Zohar tells us to read the word “ ‫ ”את‬as ‫ א‬through ‫ת‬. With this understanding, the verse reads, “In the beginning, Hashem created the alef-beis — ‫ ת‬- ‫א‬,” and with the creation of the alef-beis, He continued creating the world.

SPIRITUAL SECRETS The alef doesn’t have a sound on its own. It must be connected with another letter or vowelized to produce any sound. This symbolizes the nature of the letter. The quintessence of the alef is G-dliness, belonging to the upper realms. Interestingly, the letters that form the shape of the alef are two yuds and a vav. The numerical value of that is 26 (10+10+6), which is also the numerical value of Hashem’s name (10+5+6+5). The first time an alef appears as the first letter of a word in the Torah — another way to discover the essence of a letter — is in the word Elokim, once again hinting to its G-dly essence.

BYPASSING THE BASELINE Although the design of a kuf is similar to that of a hei, they represent opposite ideas. The hei represents holiness, and the kuf represents lack of holiness. Both have three lines, two vertical and one horizontal. These three lines represent thought, speech and action. In the hei these depict holy thoughts, speech and action, and in the kuf profane thoughts, speech and action. How is this illustrated? The long left leg of the kuf reaches beneath the letter’s baseline. This represents one who goes below the boundaries of the Torah and violates its laws, which causes profane thought, speech and action.
