(Re: The Impostor) I really enjoy The Boro Park View every week, but I’m wondering why you are publishing the story The Impostor. I’ve been reading it for several weeks now, and I don’t get it. To me, it seems to be non-kosher reading material. The story really messes with my mind, and I am always confused when I put down the magazine. I’ve read many things, and I’ve never had this feeling about any of your articles before. I really don’t understand why this serial is in a publication for heimish Yidden.

A Concerned Reader THE BORO PARK VIEW RESPONDS: The Impostor was written by Rabbi Yaakov Yosef Reinman, a talmid chacham who wrote this book under the pseudonym Avner Gold. His goal in writing the book was to educate readers about this period in Jewish history and the dangers that can befall a community when they give in to despair and cleave to something other than the heilige words of the Torah.

The Yidden in the era of Shabbesai Tzvi had suffered terribly during Gezeiras Tach v’Tat. They were so desperate for redemption and an end to their troubles that they were ready to sacrifice the mitzvos and issurim of the Torah. Hashem allowed them to follow this forbidden path until it ended in a disaster even greater than the previous one. The Impostor is extremely informative and very cautionary. It is not meant to entertain; it is meant to inform and inspire.

As Rabbi Reinman so eloquently wrote in the introduction to The Impostor in our very magazine: In my opinion, it is an important book, because it illuminates a dark and tragic period in Jewish history… The Impostor underscores the damage that persecution, disillusionment and despair can wreak on the fabric of Jewish society. The Jewish people in Eastern Europe of those times had just suffered through the massacres of the Chmielnicki uprising, but oppression and persecution were ubiquitous wherever Jewish people lived. In desperate straits, multitudes of people grasped at the flimsiest straws of hope and followed Shabbesai Tzvi, who should have been easily exposed as an impostor. The voices of the rabbis who opposed him were drowned out in the tumultuous frenzy.

Today, we are not as oppressed as we were then, but danger lurks around every corner. We must be vigilant for our safety but even more so for our faith. We cannot allow ourselves to be led astray when life becomes exceedingly difficult. This is the lesson of The Impostor.

Years later, Reb Yisroel Grossman repeated this story and added, “The truth is that I cannot forgive myself for having had the chutzpah to hold back the gadol hador from his meal.

If I could turn back the clock, of course I would have paid attention to the food and offered to wait once I realized that the Rosh Yeshivah was just about ready to eat.

“But it was worthwhile,” Rabbi Grossman concluded.

“You see, more than I learned from our conversation, I learned from Rav Isser Zalman’s conduct. I learned what anavah means; I learned the definition of humility. Here was the gadol hador paying attention to a young bachur and laughing off the notion that someone should have to wait for him…” * * * * * The Chazon Ish explains that being great and being humble is not a contradiction. To the contrary! The humble person is humble despite his greatness.

Anavah does not translate into one not recognizing his ma’alos. Humility means recognizing one’s ma’alos and recognizing from where they come!

An arrogant person is conceited despite the fact that he knows there is nothing that sets him apart from those around him. And conversely, the humble person is unassuming because of his greatness.

This is because the humble person realizes that everything he has is not his own. Rather, he knows that his kochos, his strength, his wealth and his brains are all gifts from Above. The more successful the anav becomes, the more his humility grows. He simply recognizes that Hashem is handing him more and more presents.

Which brings us back to Moshe Rabbeinu.

Even while Moshe was the greatest person in Klal Yisroel, he realized that everything he had was granted to him by Hashem. That made his humility grow, and thus, he was the humblest of all men.

Did You Know?

When the pasuk discusses the travels of the Aron, the Torah uses two backward nuns. This is the only place in the Torah where such letters are found.

The Gemara in Shabbos explains that Hashem made simanim because this portion does not belong where it is found. Rather, Reb Yehuda Hanasi said this part is a sefer in itself; Reb Shimon ben Gamliel said it will ultimately be moved to the right place.

The backward nuns bear an uncanny resemblance to brackets. Is this the source of our modern parentheses?

EITZ CHAIM HI — THE TORAH IS OUR TREE OF LIFE. AFTER THE DEVASTATING CALAMITY IN MERON, THE TORAH IS BEING UTILIZED TO HEAL, UNITE AND REMEMBER THE LIVES LOST. “There is nothing we can do.”

But there is. Because this sentiment has always been unacceptable to a Yid facing a difficult predicament. Antithetical to our deeply held values, we always felt — no, knew — that we have the power of action to change things for the better.

The gut-wrenching tragedy in Meron threatened this assertion in the most hopeless fashion. There was no time to even open our sifrei Tehillim before dozens of our fellow young men breathed their last. The despair that enveloped the Yiddishe world over this inexplicable catastrophe left us all in a state of paralyzed shock. This time, it seemed, there was nothing we could do.

This is the story of those who refused to accept such a predicament and a nation united in a mission of healing.

ZACHREINU L’CHAIM — A LIVING MEMORIAL In the days following Lag Ba’omer, the immediate needs of the bereaved families and those recovering in hospitals took center stage.

And then, as Klal Yisroel began to shake off the dust and return to normal life, a group of askanim sat with prominent rabbanim to discuss an initiative that would unite Klal Yisroel, help heal the fresh wounds, and be of benefit to the 45 holy neshamos who perished as a korban tzibbur.

The unthinkable

tragedy affected every Yid on a personal level. And the response had to boast the power to unite the Jewish world with equal strength.

“Where do Yidden turn at such a time?” they wondered. The answer has been the same for over 3,000 years: the Torah! Not only our guide for how to live and react, the Torah is also our Source of solace and comfort.

Thus, it would be the Torah that would have to be the vessel for unified healing after unified heartbreak.

Learning programs and joint siyums were considered, and other suggestions were weighed as well. But the rabbanim, including R’ Shmuel Eliezer Stern, shlit”a, from Shevet Halevi Beis Din in Bnei Brak; R’ Yehuda Aryeh

Dunner of Bnei Brak; and R’ Naftali Nussbaum, a prominent Israeli rosh yeshivah and dayan, felt that the right response would need to leave a lasting impact on behalf of the memories of the 45 niftarim, their devastated families, and a nation commiserating with them.

Soon a consensus was reached: Klal Yisroel would join forces and write an unprecedented 45 Sifrei Torah, one for each of the neshamos we lost! The new Torahs will be presented to each family so they could choose where and how it would be put to holy use.

This mission will carry multiple objectives. First and foremost, the tremendous zechus for the neshamos who were taken from us is unrivaled.

Second, the Torah is eternal! Even the best initiatives cannot be expected to continue forever, but Torah reading and learning will be the gift that keeps on giving for eternity. Third, a majority of those who tragically passed did not leave any children who can say Kaddish for them, and these Sifrei Torah will fill that void and be a living remembrance to their once blossoming lives.

At the same time, the initiative also carries with it benefits toward the recovery of those left behind. The families will see that Klal Yisroel cares, shares their pain and is determined to help them get through their tzarah. For the rest of us, it will be our way of remaining united. We cried together, and now we will heal together!

The right response would need to leave a lasting impact on behalf of the memories of the 45 niftarim, their devastated families, and a nation commiserating with them.

THE INITIATIVE The rabbanim making up the va’ad of this movement are calling upon each individual to participate with at least $45, one dollar for each of the neshamos and their respective Torah. There will also be sponsorship opportunities for those who wish to dedicate amudim or a parsha in memory of a victim. In the weeks ahead, the team that was set up specifically for this drive will continue organizing the logistics of this massive undertaking.

The early word on the Jewish street is that the community is eager to be part of this profoundly meaningful endeavor. Nothing of this scope has ever been done

before, but then again, no peacetime tragedy can compare to what occurred in Meron. In addition to what this means for the families of the victims, the sense of achdus that this drive will bring about will be a much-needed glimmer of light after the overwhelming darkness of the tragedy.

The 45 individual hachnasas sifrei Torah — where every Yid will be part of the celebration — are sure to go down in the annals of our history as remarkable moments of perseverance and triumph.

As we hear the warm reaction, it is the sincere hope of the rabbanim and askanim that this movement will also bring some solace to those who lost a precious loved one.

We cannot ever bring back their father, son or brother, but we can and will show them that we are with them on the road to recovery and that their loved ones will not be forgotten.

habbesai Tzvi buried his face in his hands for several long moments. Avraham Yechini waited patiently for him to continue. When Shabbesai Tzvi lifted his face, it was streaked with tears, but it was also clear that an entirely different train of thought was running through his mind.

“Tell me, Avraham, have you ever studied Kabbalah?” asked Shabbesai Tzvi, a speculative look in his eyes.

“Yes, I have. Mostly the Zohar and the writings of the Arizal. I’m sure I could learn a great deal more from you.”

“Perhaps we can arrange it.”

“I dreamed that I’d been driven from my home into the middle of an endless desert and left there without food or water. I walked and walked for days on end, or at least, it seemed that way. In every direction, as far as my eye could see, there was nothing but endless dunes of sand.

“I felt myself growing weaker and weaker. How long could I endure these conditions? I sat on a dune, identical to every other dune in this sea of sand, and I thought of my home.

How wonderful it had been! I had not appreciated it when I had it, and now it seemed I would never see it again.

Despair filled my heart as I prepared to meet the Angel of Death.

“Suddenly, I looked up and saw someone approaching in the distance.

I jumped to my feet and shaded my eyes to see better. I could see it was a woman, but that was all. The woman came closer and closer, until with shock I realized it was my own grandmother who had passed away when

I was just a little child. Her face was shriveled almost beyond recognition, but her eyes shone with warmth and kindness. “‘Why are you wandering in the desert, Avraham, my little one?’ she asked in a quavering voice. “‘I’m lost, grandmother,’ I replied.

“She turned and walked away. I followed. It seemed as if we had been walking only a few minutes when suddenly we were in a large oasis.

Enormous date palms stood as sentinels against the desert around the rim of the oasis. Their ripened fruit fell into my hands as I walked under them. Fresh water bubbled out of the ground to flow freely among the luxuriantly green philodendrons. “‘Drink, my little one,’ said my grandmother.

“Taking water from the spring in my cupped hands, I drank and bathed my face. The cool, sweet water soothed my parched throat. “‘Eat, my little one,’ said my grandmother.

“I ate the dates I had gathered, and I felt I had come back among the living. I offered one of the dates to my grandmother. “‘Why don’t you eat or drink anything?’ I asked.

“She smiled. ‘I do not need to, my little one. Come with me. We have not

yet arrived at our destination.’

“We walked deep into the oasis until we came to a great clearing. A young man was sitting on a rock in the center of the clearing. He wore purple robes and a white turban. His face shone with a light I had never seen before. Many other young men were seated on the ground at his feet, eagerly awaiting the words of the man on the rock.

“The man began to speak in a silken voice. As he spoke, the rock upon which he sat turned into a chair of fire. The flames around him reached higher and higher until they licked at the clouds in the sky, yet the man continued speaking as if nothing was happening. No longer able to watch, I turned away. My grandmother looked at me with understanding in her eyes. “‘Come with me, Avraham, my little one,’ she said. ‘It’s time to go.’

“We walked back to the edge of the desert and stopped near the palms and the spring. “‘Who was that man, grandmother?’ I asked. “‘I cannot tell you, my little one. I can only tell you this. If you wish to return to your home, you must promise that when the time comes you will tell him about the dragon’s teeth.’ “‘The dragon’s teeth?’ I asked. ‘What are the dragon’s teeth?’ “‘I cannot tell you that, either. But it is not necessary for you to know.

Just tell the man.’ “‘What shall I tell him?’ “‘Just tell him to look under the dragon’s teeth. Nothing else. Just those words.’ “‘But how will I tell the man if I don’t know his name or where to find him?’ “‘Do not be concerned about that, my little one. When the time comes, you’ll find him. Just remember his face and his voice. That will be enough.’ “‘I will do as you say, Grandmother.’ “‘Very good, my little one,’ she said. ‘I must leave you now, but do not worry. You will be perfectly safe. Farewell.’

“She took my head in her bony hands and pulled it down toward her.

Then she kissed me on my forehead. A single tear wove its way down through the wrinkles on her right cheek.

“Suddenly, she lifted her arms into the air, and they turned into wings of flame. An instant later, her entire body became a sizzling pillar of flame that rose into the sky. My eyes were blinded by the light, my face scorched by the heat. I fell to the ground and covered my head.

“A short while after that, I felt a soft breeze touch my cheeks. I opened my eyes and was back in my bedroom. The window was open, the curtains aflutter with a gentle breeze from the Bosporus.”

Can you imagine my shock when I walked into the shul tonight and saw you? You are the exact image of the man on the flaming rock, down to the very last feature of your face and the sound of your voice. My heart shuddered within me at the realization that I had been shown a true vision. At last, I can fulfill my promise. You are to look under the dragon’s teeth.”

Several questions seemed to flit through Shabbesai Tzvi’s mind, but he suppressed them.

“Thank you, Avraham,” he said.

“Rest assured that if a message was sent to me, the meaning will surely follow soon. I will discover the meaning of the dragon’s teeth.”

Shabbesai Tzvi rose to his feet, and the others immediately followed suit.

He placed his hand gently on Avraham Yechini’s shoulder.

“May the Almighty bless you and watch over you,” he said and withdrew his hand.

Avraham Yechini had kept his eyes lowered while Shabbesai Tzvi blessed him. Now he bent over and kissed Shabbesai Tzvi’s hand. Without saying another word, he turned and walked out of the shul.

fruitless. He wrote to his wife in Smyrna, telling her he would be delayed in Constantinople for another month or two. He would explain everything when he returned home.

One torrid night, Yechiel was awakened by a sharp knock at his door. A captain of the palace guard and a small detachment of troops had come to escort him to the royal residence in Constantinople. He was given ten minutes to dress.

Although he was quite certain he had committed no crime, a sense of deep apprehension gnawed at Yechiel as he rode through the deserted streets toward the royal residence. He had stayed away from the royal family and the palace in Adrianople for well over two years, ever since the power struggle had erupted between the young sultan’s mother, Turhan Sultana, and her mother-in-law, Kussem Sultana.

Two years earlier, in 1656, Kussem Sultana had been strangled in her rooms by unknown assailants, and Turhan Sultana had taken the reins of power in her own bloodstained hands. The thought of stepping into the royal residence filled Yechiel with dread.

The palace was wrapped in slumber when Yechiel and his escort arrived.

He was led through darkened halls that glowed with opulence and shown into the chambers that served as the office of the grand vizier, Kiuprili Mehmet Pasha. Choosing a grand vizier from the powerful Kiuprili family had been a wise move on Turhan Sultana’s part, thought Yechiel as he waited. If anyone could revitalize the Empire, it was Kiuprili. The door opened, and Kiuprili entered. Yechiel sprang to his feet.

The grand vizier sat at an ornate lacquered table and clapped his hands.

A liveried servant appeared bearing a pot of steaming coffee. The servant poured a cup of the coffee and quickly vanished. The grand vizier took a long sip of the coffee and stroked his closely trimmed white beard. Only then did he turn his sharp eyes on Yechiel.

“Sit down, young man,” he said with a wave of his bejeweled hand, his voice like gravel under carriage wheels. “You are the Jewish silk merchant from Smyrna, are you not?”

A Frightening Week as Anti-Semitic Hate Repeatedly Rears Its Ugly Head It was a disturbing week for New York’s Jewish community, with multiple violent anti-Semitic attacks taking place throughout the city.

A Thursday night rally in Times Square had a 29-year-old Jewish man knocked down, beaten, kicked, pepper-sprayed and hit with crutches by a group of pro-Palestinian demonstrators in the middle of Broadway near 48th Street. VIN News reported that just moments later, multiple cars carrying Palestinian supporters traveled slowly down the 47th Street Diamond District, their passengers spouting anti-Semitic statements. One man threw fireworks in front of the exchange at 37 West, leaving a 55-year-old woman with burns.

The violence continued on Shabbos, with two teenage boys assaulted on Ocean Parkway and 18th Avenue sometime after 6 p.m. The boys said that a group of men reportedly made them chant pro-Palestinian statements and punched them repeatedly, with several more men wielding baseball bats joining the pack. A passing Muslim Uber driver rescued the boys, telling them to get into his car and driving them to a safe location.

Hamodia reported that another incident took place a short time later at about 7:20 p.m. in Boro Park, when a group of men got out of a car on 16th Avenue and 49th Street near the Agudah shul. The men reportedly yelled antiSemitic slurs at Jews on the street, with one spitting at Jewish people walking by as he shouted “Free Palestine — kill the Jews.”

While the NYPD is investigating these hate crimes, the first suspect to be arrested was back on the streets two days later. Twenty-three-year-old Waseem Awawdeh of Bay Ridge was taken

into police custody last Friday in connection with the Times Square beating, but he was released on $10,000 bail.

Hailed as a hero, Awawdeh expressed no remorse for his actions, saying, “If I could do it again, I would do it again.”

The NYPD upped its police presence in Jewish communities to provide a greater sense of security, and Mayor Bill de Blasio held meetings with Jewish community leaders both Friday and Sunday. “Anti-Semitism isn’t just a threat to our Jewish community; it’s an attack on our entire city,” the mayor announced. “Today I joined community leaders in Boro Park to send a message: We won’t turn a blind eye to this hatred.

It will be confronted. The perpetrators will be brought to justice.”

Others showing their support were mayoral candidates Andrew Yang and Eric Adams. Boro Park 24 reported that Yang and Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein went to visit one of the men who was menaced outside the Agudah.

Yang said that more police are needed on the streets, adding, “That is what you deserve. You deserve that level of safety and responsiveness.”

With more than two decades of NYPD experience under his belt, Adams has said in the past that public safety is a necessity. Hamodia reported that Adams described the Times Square attack as a “pandemic of hate.”

“We found the vaccine for COVID,” said Adams. “The vaccine for hate must come from everyday New Yorkers and everyday Americans.”

Suspect Arrested for 36th Street Arson and Assault A Brooklyn man is under arrest for two anti-Semitic incidents that took place on the same Boro Park block on the same day, and is considered to be a suspect in multiple other crimes.

Hamodia reported that 29-year-old Ali Alaheri was arrested in Westchester last

Friday and charged with setting fire to a yeshivah and shul in addition to assaulting a chasidic man. Surveillance video showed Alaheri piling up trash bags last Wednesday next to a 36th Street yeshivah near Fort Hamilton Parkway and then setting them on fire. Firefighters were able to put out the flames before they caused any significant damage.

Just hours later, security camera footage showed an unprovoked attack by Alaheri on a chasidic man just yards from the yeshivah.

Mark J. Lesko, acting United States attorney for the Eastern District of New York, said that Alaheri deliberately targeting both a yeshivah and a man in chasidic garb demonstrated “a violent hatred that cannot be tolerated.”

“We will go to every length possible to prosecute this type of conduct to the fullest extent possible,” said Lesko.

The NYPD is also eyeing Alaheri in five other incidents throughout Brooklyn over the past month, which include robbery, desecration of religious articles and the punching of a 42-year-old man in the face. He could face anywhere from five to fifteen years behind bars on the arson charge alone.

FAA Requirements May Have Airlines Weighing Passengers Rising obesity rates may have airlines asking passengers to step on the scale before boarding their flights in order to comply with updated safety regulations that are expected to be issued by the Federal Aviation Administration.

VIN News reported that an advisory issued in 2019 had the FAA telling airlines that they would need to update their weight and balance programs, which take into account total aircraft weight — including passengers and their luggage. Airlines could potentially be required to submit that information to

the FAA as often as every 36 months, which could result in random passenger weigh-ins at the boarding gate.

With Americans growing steadily heavier, the FAA has raised its average weight estimates for passengers from its 2005 standards, with male travelers carrying a 16-pound personal item pegged at 200 pounds in the summer and 205 in the winter, and women travelers with an equally heavy personal item listed at 179 pounds in the summer and 184 pounds in the winter. Given the extra passenger poundage, airlines could be forced to remove seats from their planes to comply with FAA weight and balance regulations, potentially resulting in higher fares.

The FAA has said that weighing passengers at the gate is one option under consideration, but that airlines would likely find better ways to estimate how much passengers weigh.

Still, the 2019 advisory said that if passenger scales were used, their readout would be hidden from view, and that weigh-ins would be voluntary, with

passengers having the right to refuse. Airline personnel who suspect that travelers are fibbing about their weight would be allowed to use a reasonable estimate of a number they feel to be more accurate in their reporting.

NYC’s First Floating Park Opens to the Public New Yorkers who are finally beginning to emerge from the COVID-19 bubble and hit the great outdoors can look forward to making their way to a brand-new destination — Little Island, a 2.4-acre park located on, or actually in, the Hudson River on Manhattan’s West Side.

Five years in the making and the subject of several lawsuits, Little Island came with a hefty $260 million price tag. Set atop clusters of tulip-shaped concrete bases that have been drawing curious stares from both motorists and passersby for many months, the

city’s first floating park features winding pathways, tall steel arches, a 687seat amphitheater, rolling lawns and more than 350 species of flowers, trees and shrubs. Little Island is accessible via two bridges on the Hudson River Park Esplanade near West 13th Street and will feature free educational programs and cultural events.

More than 66,000 bulbs and 114 trees have been planted on Little Island, which is set atop 132 concrete pedestals of varying heights mounted on 280 concrete pilings. The park juts out between the old wood piles of Pier 54 and Pier 56, which were left intact to preserve marine life in the Hudson River, and Gothamist reported that construction on the project was scheduled so as not to interfere with the migratory patterns of striped bass that call the Hudson River home.

Little Island is open daily from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. and can accommodate 1,000 people, though timed reservations are required for visitors who plan to come between 12 and 8 p.m.

After years of planning, construction and bureaucratic impediments, a beautiful little park floating over the Hudson River is soon to become a stunning reality.

A drive along the Hudson down the West Side Highway always offers an interesting visual experience, with the question “Tatty, what’s that?” constantly coming from the back seat. Among countless other attractions, there’s the Intrepid aircraft carrier with dozens of warplanes, as well as the USS Growler submarine parked by its side. Enormous cruise ships are often stationed at local piers, and trapeze artists can be seen swinging high up in the air. Helicopters land and take off, and the Freedom Tower proudly stands tall nearby.

In recent years, a new eye-catcher has come into sight on the Hudson River near the Meatpacking District. Dubbed Little Island, this futuristic-looking park is being built on 132 tulipshaped pots rising up from the Hudson River. If you haven’t noticed what looks like a bunch of champagne glasses melded together on the water, you’ve either not traveled on the West Side

Highway recently, or you’re simply the safest, most focused driver in our area.

The only thing more striking than its design is its incredibly hefty price tag: a neat $250 million dollars! But before you run protesting this largesse before local politicians, you’ll be heartened to hear that the bill is mostly being footed by Jewish billionaire Barry Dillard who has been behind this proj-

ect from the start. It hasn’t all been hunky-dory, though; it was originally estimated to cost far less (surprise, surprise!), and Mr. Dillard even backed out of the project completely at one point.

Background Manhattan’s West Side has undergone a significant transformation over

the years. Once an industrial hub, the area has been revitalized as a center of art, fashion and technology. In 1998, New York State established the Hudson River Park Trust to “design, build, operate and maintain a new public park and estuarine sanctuary in and along several miles of the Manhattan shoreline.” The trust has a thirteen-member board of directors appointed by the

explains to Rabbi Reiness and his son Nechemia why he feels like the black sheep of his family. He visits the carpentry shop, where he surprises himself by doing some carving work — and enjoying it.

T

he wheels of the accordion cart protested as Ariella wheeled it down the street; they were not enjoying the overuse after a long hiatus. Ariella pulled the cart behind her, deliberating whether she should go into the hardware store to buy something to oil them with.

She glanced at her watch. No, she’d better leave that for later. Zahava’s little students were waiting. They had made up to begin at 10 a.m., and now it was two minutes past ten…

“Good morning, Ariella.”

“Good morning, Mrs. Mayer,” Ariella said, not looking at her watch anymore, though the voice of her high school teacher gave her an urge to glance at it again. It was a reminder of those days when Mrs. Mayer would stand at the gate of the school to greet the latecomers.

“How are you, Ariella?”

“Baruch Hashem, good. How are you, Mrs. Mayer?”

Mrs. Mayer chuckled. “Baruch Hashem, the usual. I’m busy with school… So what’s doing?”

“Baruch Hashem, things are fine.” Ariella nodded as if to underscore what she said, and now she did check her watch again. Not because of her memories of being scolded for coming late to school, but because of the children in Zahava’s playgroup. She had promised to come play for them in honor of Rosh Chodesh, as a nice gesture to her friend, and she didn’t really fancy coming late.

“I thought about you a lot this past week,” Mrs. Mayer remarked.

“Thank you,” Ariella said politely.

“You’re probably thinking that I’m just being super nice, and that’s what people like to say when they meet someone they haven’t seen in a long while. But I really did think about you a lot this past week.” Her teacher leaned on the gate, a sign that she was planning more than just a polite exchange of pleasantries.

“In what regard did Mrs. Mayer think about me?” Ariella asked, not affirming or negating her teacher’s assumption about what had passed through her mind when she’d heard her empathetic remark.

“I met someone who asked about you. And I remembered suddenly, as I was telling her how wonderful you are, how fond I am of you…”

“I’ve always been a big fan of Mrs. Mayer as well,” Ariella said directly.

“Thank you for saying nice things about me.”

“I hope something will come of it…”

And I hope not, Ariella felt like whispering. She smiled abashedly. Her teacher showered her with brachos, and they parted ways.

Blocking out her thoughts, Ariella dragged her accordion cart up the stairs of Zahava’s building. She looked at the door of the rented apartment and remembered how she’d come with Zahava and her mother more than five years ago to set up the apartment before Zahava’s wedding.

“You really came!” Zahava welcomed her friend with a grin and ushered her into the large, enclosed porch. “Thanks so much, Ariella!

Kinderlach, look who came to visit us — my friend Ariella, the music morah!”

About fifteen two-year-olds surrounded Ariella, some more hesitant and others overly friendly.

“Accordion, accordion!” one blond child shouted.

“That’s right,” Ariella replied, surprised that the word was in his lexicon. “This is my accordion. And do you want to see what else I brought for you? What is this?” She pulled out a little bag of dreidels from her case. The children were quiet.

“Wait, we didn’t learn about those yet,” Zahava said as she walked into the room with a cup of juice. “It’s just Rosh Chodesh Kislev. There’s almost a

month to learn about Chanukah. But it’s great that you’re going to get us into the spirit. Kinderlach, who knows what this is?”

They all gazed silently at the bag.

Zahava took one dreidel and spun it on the low table.

“Dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, I made you out of clay!” the same blond boy called out. He began to jump around. “My tatty bought me a dreidel that makes lights, ‘cause I went to sleep nicely!”

“Great!” Ariella smiled at him.

“What’s your name?”

He smiled in response and stuck a thumb into his mouth. Then he took it out. “Chaim’ke.”

“Chaim’ke Braun,” Zahava said lightly. “He’s a very big boy, and very smart, just like all the kids in our playgroup.”

Ariella knew Zahava well enough to know that her words contained a deeper message, but she could not discern what it was. “Well,” she said brightly, pushing it aside for later, “let’s give out our dreidels, and we’ll take out the accordion. Is that okay, Morah Zahava? Because my accordion really wants to get to know the adorable kinderlach in your playgroup!”

Within a few minutes, the accordion knew all the kinderlach in Zahava’s group very well. It sang and played and danced and spun, and told them about the miracles and wonders of Chanukah as everyone sang along.

“That was so much fun!” Zahava said when they finished. “Maybe you can come do this regularly — for pay, of course. Look how beautifully the children cooperated!”

“I told you already, you can do the same thing with recorded music. But you’re right, I should come here every now and then, if only for my own pleasure. I really enjoyed this, too.”

Ariella shrugged off the accordion.

The children crowded around her, reluctant to part from the large, winecolored instrument.

“My tatty is going to buy me an accordion!” a voice announced confidently, very close to Ariella. “He said on Chanukah he is going to buy me an accordion.”

She looked at the child. It was the same little boy. Could he be older than he looked? “How old are you,

Ariella raised her eyebrows at Zahava. “Four months! Nice vocabulary!

He gets updated every month?” She laughed.

Zahava smiled. “He’s a very precocious child for his age,” she said in a low voice, while the children continued stroking the accordion even after it was packed away in its case. “And yes, a month ago, he told me that he is two and three months old. And the month before that, he laughed about being two and two — months, that is.”

“Sounds like a borderline genius, doesn’t it?”

“Perhaps,” Zahava said quietly.

“Now come to the kitchen a minute.

I may not know much about IQ and all that, but I do think he is quite exceptional — for sure more than just a ‘very precocious child.’”

“He must be an oldest, and his mother spends all day talking to him and teaching him things.”

“Actually not.” Zahava took a deep breath. “He’s an orphan, Ariella. His mother passed away a short time after he was born.”

“Really,” Ariella replied. And instead of walking into the kitchen, she turned back toward the porch.

“Come here a second, Ariella!” Zahava hurried after her. “I don’t like it when you shut me out and run away in the middle of a conversation. Why do you do that?”

“Oh, maybe because I don’t think that you have to marry someone just because he has a gifted son.”

“Did I ask you to do anything? Did I talk about marriage? It’s true that I wanted you to get to know Chaim’ke because of his father, but it was only by way of an introduction…”

“Zahava.” Ariella sighed. “Please.

Leave me alone for now, all right?”

“What do you mean?”

“Let me recover from my visit to Belgium.”

Zahava opened her mouth to say something, but then closed it. She toyed with the handle on her oven door. “Fine,” she said eventually. “Do you want a drink? That’s why I called you into the kitchen. It’s dry outside.

And you sang and exerted yourself.”

Her friend was quiet for a moment.

“Okay, thanks. I’ll take a drink. Even though we both know that you took me to the kitchen to tell me quietly that Chaim’ke Braun doesn’t have a mother and that it’s a big mitzvah to raise an orphan.”

“I didn’t plan to tell you about the mitzvah aspect.” Zahava smiled without meaning to.

“Why not?”

“Because I didn’t give much hope that the conversation would get that far.”

“You’re right.” Ariella put her empty cup down on the counter. “Thanks, Zahava. And thank you for the opportunity to visit your playgroup. Maybe I need to switch from being a private tutor to being a music teacher in preschools. The kids are beyond adorable.”

“I think so too!”

“And I mean all the kids in your playgroup. Not just the one who is two years and four months old.”

“Fine, fine, I get it, Ariella.”

“Good.” Ariella returned to her accordion and grasped the handle of the cart. “Goodbye, kids!” she called out, and left.

She strode briskly down the street, as if running away from something.

What was it with people today? At least her parents were not pressuring her about this right now. They were too busy with Osher.

She raised her eyes. The street had darkened at once; a large, low cloud had slipped over the sun. She didn’t like winter; she’d always been a spring girl. And despite its being Kislev, the day had started off so beautifully…

But not all days that start off nicely finish that way. She knew that from experience.

And it seemed to be happening yet again… What was that acrid smell in her stairwell if not the mushroom soup she’d cooked for herself, burning because she’d forgotten to turn off the flame before she’d left the house?

The kitchen was cloudy with smoke. She groped her way to the stove to turn off the flame, before tossing the disposable, now-blackened pot straight into the garbage.

Drops began to spatter on her window. Ugh. She felt bad about the few shekels the pot had cost, but she

was even more upset about the soup.

What could have been better on such a day than a bowl of filling, hot soup?

Now she was just in the mood to crawl into bed, switch off the phones, and burrow under the blanket that blocked her off from the whole world.

And that’s exactly what Ariella did.

Osher Wait a second. If Ariella didn’t know that I’m in Acco now, then how did she send me the lemonade?

So maybe it wasn’t even her.

No one was in our room. I went over to the Reinesses’ ancient telephone and dialed Ariella’s number.

But she didn’t pick up, neither at home nor on her cell phone.

“So tell them it’s a trial, and maybe I’ll be back next week. And if I decide that I’m staying then… well, I’ll give them more details then.”

“Nice. They’re supposed to wait patiently for another week, huh?” She spoke as if she were my older sister.

“And in the meantime, what? Do you know how worried they are?”

“You can see that for yourself,” I answered her quietly. “They’re not calling the police, right?”

“Right, but…”

“So why not?”

She didn’t answer me.

“Because Rabbi Steinhaus once told Tatty that he can trust me.”

“And they know that you sometimes disappear for short periods of time…” She couldn’t help herself.

Ariella’s teacher leaned on the gate, a sign that she was planning more than just a polite exchange of pleasantries.

I deliberated for a moment, and then I called home. I didn’t want Tatty or Mommy to answer. I didn’t want them to ask me where I was exactly, because I doubted they’d be satisified with the answer: that it’s only a trial, so why bother telling them anything about it, and if I do end up staying here, I’ll tell them more. But I knew that it was more likely that one of the girls would pick up, either Shoshi or Lakey. Tatty and Mommy know that most of the calls are for them, anyway.

“Osher!” I was right; it was Shoshi.

And I couldn’t decide if she was excited that I was calling, or disappointed that it was me and not one of her friends. “How are you, Osher?”

“Baruch Hashem.”

“We…” She paused for a second.

“We miss you. Where are you?”

“I’m someplace. It’s only for a trial.

If it doesn’t work out here, I’ll go back to Daas Torah.”

“How can you do this?” Shoshi asked. “Don’t you ever think about how Tatty and Mommy are going out of their minds with worry about you?”

“Right,” I answered, irritated.

“And if I am chased, then I run even farther. Now tell me, is Ariella there?”

“No.” “Do you know if she sent me lemonade?”

“Sent you lemonade? To where?”

“To here.”

“If she doesn’t know where you are, how can she send you something?” Shoshi asked logically. And then she said suddenly, “Wait, so does she know?”

“No, she doesn’t know,” I answered.

But my answer didn’t help. Things only got worse.

“Oh, Mommy’s just coming in,” Shoshi said. “Mommy, do you know that Ariella knows where Osher is?”

I didn’t want to hear what Mommy answered. I didn’t want to hear how they misunderstood me yet again, whether it was my fault or someone else’s. And I didn’t want to hear Ariella get in trouble because of me.

I hung up the phone.

PASTA SALAD Pasta that can be eaten at room temperature is a fantastic picnic food and will enhance any meal!

INGREDIENTS 1 1 2 ½ 1 1 1 ½

(16 oz.) pkg. penne pasta (16 oz.) can mushrooms T. olive oil tsp. salt (16 oz.) can baby corn nuggets cup pimiento olives red pepper yellow pepper

Dressing ¾ cup mayonnaise 1½ T. lemon juice 1 T. vinegar 1 T. olive juice 1 T. honey Pinch black pepper

SNACKING CUTLETS A blend of snacks makes a great supper treat!

INGREDIENTS 4 ¼ 1 1

chicken cutlets cup mayonnaise tsp. honey tsp. ketchup

Snacking Crumbs 1 small bag Super Snacks 1 small bag potato chips (approximately 1 cup) ¾ cup pretzels ¾ cup Rice Krispies

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 375°.

2. Cut the cutlets into strips.

DIRECTIONS 1. Cook the pasta according to package directions. Set aside.

2. Bake the mushrooms with olive oil and salt at 350° for 10 to 12 minutes.

3. Mix together the mayonnaise, ketchup and honey in a bowl.

4. Crush the snacks with a rolling pin.

5. Dip the cutlets in the mayo mixture, then coat with crumbs.

6. Bake, uncovered, for 18 minutes.

3. Combine the dressing ingredients, and then toss the dressing with the pasta and vegetables.

INGREDIENTS 2 lbs. ground chicken ½ cup matzah meal 3 eggs 1 T. ketchup 3–4 garlic cloves, crushed 1 T. salt 6 T. oil 6 T. water or seltzer 1 tsp. paprika

Pinch of black pepper Topping 1 cup crushed cornflakes

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 375°.

2. Mix together all patty ingredients.

3. Using approximately ¼ cup of the mixture at a time, form patties.

4. Put oil and crushed cornflakes into two disposable soup bowls. Dip the patties first into oil, and then into crushed cornflakes to coat.

5. Place the patties on a greased cookie sheet, and brush tops lightly with oil.

6. Stick wooden sticks into the patties.

7. Bake for 25 minutes.

Crash!

The bottom of the box gives way, and my pizza maker smashes to the floor, red pieces of plastic scattering all over. The inner workings now lie exposed, never to be put to use.

The little feet stop in their tracks. Fright wipes away the curiosity as the little hands go rigid.

Steadying the mess inside of me, I pull my son into an embrace and say, “It’s only a machine, and we can buy a new one. I’m so glad that the machine got hurt and not you.”

I hold it in check, because intact souls are so much more precious than intact objects.

But inside, simmering uglily, there’s annoyance. And exasperation.

A man came to his rebbe, his heart full of grief. Over the past while, his family had been struck by misfortune after misfortune. There were health issues, there were parnassah issues, and he was falling apart from the sheer weight of his pain.

“Rebbe, please help me,” he beseeched. “Why has my mazel turned? Is there something I can do?”

Instead of a bracha, the rebbe asked him a question: “Did you recently replace anything in your home?”

The man thought for a while, and then shared that he’d recently purchased earthenware vessels.

“I had ceramic dishes,” he explained, “but not a day passed without a child breaking a dish, which would shatter all over.

So we replaced it with a more durable set.”

“Take your ceramic set back out,” the rebbe advised him.

Until now, when there was a misfortune destined for the chassid, he explained, Hashem sent a child to break a dish to atone for that. And it wasn’t wise to interfere.

When something breaks, it’s proof of Hashem’s love and His protection. Breaking expensive items can hurt. It feels like such a pity, such unnecessary financial loss. But we never know what aggravation it’s saving us, what the discomfort is

preventing.

There are those who will not purchase warranties for appliances for this reason. If something is supposed to hurt, let it be a material loss, they reason. Let me not get in the way of a kapparah that is bashert for me.

And we’ve known it since the days of the Churban: “She’shafoch Hakadosh Baruch Hu chamaso al eitzem v’al avanim v’lo shafoch chamaso al Yisroel — Hashem spilled His wrath on wood and stone and He didn’t spill His wrath on Yisroel.” (Eicha Rabbah, 4:14) But are my children destructive? Is it okay for my child to break things? we wonder. We don’t want to raise unruly children who don’t know right from wrong. We want to nip these destruc-

tive forces in the bud.

But no. The Gemara in Chullin says that one should give a child old vessels to break. Because children have it in them to destroy, to break. And that is natural. That is okay.

Rochel Imeinu, in naming her son Yosef, teaches us that a broken item can be the symbol of gratitude, too.

We all know the famous Rashi about the name Yosef, that Rochel named Yosef so because “Yosef Hashem charpasi — Hashem removed my shame.” The Aggadah (Midrash Rabbah 73:5) says that now that she had a son, Rochel could blame Yosef. A dish broke? Well, Yosef did it. Someone ate the last fig? Well, that was my child.

In a speech on Parshas Vayeitzei, Rabbi Y. Y. Jacobson explores this pasuk and wonders how to make sense of this perplexing Midrash: Was that Rochel’s joy in the birth of her son — that she now had whom to blame? Is that why she’d yearned for a child?

“What is more,” Rabbi Jacobson says, “this seems so dishonest. … What exactly was her comfort now? That when she breaks a china plate she will lie and say that her child did it?”

But no. What Rochel is teaching us is a lesson in gratitude. A lesson she wanted to be reminded of every time she called her child by name.

She knew about the human tendency to focus on the negative, and with time, to start to take for granted even the most extraordinary gifts. Thus, Yosef’s name was a reminder not that she has whom to blame, but that the only reason there’s a broken dish in her house now is because she was blessed with a child; to remember the gift in even the seemingly negative aspects of child-rearing.

What do we say when a glass breaks?

The Making of Camp Hikon

by Naftali Schwartz I spent a good chunk of my career getting educated for and building stuff with hi-tech. After a midlife crisis, I eventually realized that what I really wanted to do is teach. I also soon realized that I wanted to teach something very specific: how to live the proper and serene life that Hahem wants for us all. As I delved more deeply into the natural ways of living, I also came to the realization that with all of the benefits we get from technology, we also pay a steep price. Looking back to my youth, I could see that while this Faustian bargain was somehow favorable in the past, those golden years of technology are long gone. Over the past decade I’ve found joy in gravitating towards a more natural way of living and eating, and separating myself from technology where reasonable. Over the course of my teaching career in the past decade, I’ve made a careful study of best teaching practices and I’m happy to report that this has yielded huge gains for both myself and my students.

I’ve managed to achieve enough notoriety as a successful teacher that sometimes little boys I don’t even know will walk up to me and ask me to teach their class!

Transitioning from veteran teacher to Director of Camp Hikon was a natural next step. Most teachers in the Yeshiva system already understand the abundant contradictions between upholding Yeshiva policy and teaching the students something worthwhile in a way they can both enjoy and remember. Over time, this became especially difficult for me as I realized more and more how much best teaching practice diverges from typical Yeshiva policy. But if you open your own camp, suddenly everything is negotiable. You get to make sure your campers are finally eating the healthy food they so desperately need and not loading themselves up with anti-nutrients. You get to make sure they get enough sleep. You get to make sure they move enough, are exposed to nature enough, and are protected from the ills of screen time. You get to ensure their food, water and air are free of toxins. You get to ensure that skills are developed methodologically from the ground up. Looking back, it seems like such a no-brainer that I’m actually shocked I never thought of this before.

But Camp Hikon is actually much more than all of that. It is also a place families can send their campers to, confident that we’ll do something to fill the wide gap left by a Yeshiva system focused on practically meaningless Regents examination scores. A place where campers can acquire the emotional maturity they need to navigate the complex challenges coming their way. A place where they can re-learn the social skills they’ll surely need going forward. A place where they’ll learn in a loving environment about certain threats they will be facing which their parents never had to. Many parents wonder aloud if their little one is ready to hear about these things and aren’t some things best left unsaid. There is some truth in this, but it must be realized that at some point the cost of hiding the danger starts to exceed the cost of revealing it. In very many instances, we’re already beyond that point.

The community response to the message of Camp Hikon has been extremely gratifying. From a modest idea to cater to local Yeshiva High School boys, the concept has blossomed into an institution which attracts both younger and older campers, boasts both bay and girl divisions, and is a magnet for campers coming from all manner of Torah institutions all around the country and beyond. We are culturally diverse, but we’re all Torah Jews striving to fulfill the exhortation of the Navi to prepare ourselves for the challenges and the travails awaiting us in the late pre-Messianic era.

An integral and blessed part of living in the modern world is the existence of machines that hum and whoosh and heat and wash, saving us tremendous time and energy in the running of a household. But as the name suggests, major appliances are major purchases — and major purchases require both investment of thought and a measure of upkeep.

To that end, I spoke with Mr. Shia Fasten and Mr. Yitzy Klitnick of Rapid Appliance Repair, who were kind enough to share an insider’s view of the world of appliances.

In your experience, does it pay to invest in a high-end appliance, or are there more affordable options that work just as well and last just as long?

It really depends on a person’s budget. We’re not going to say that a $15,000 oven doesn’t work better than a $450 oven. Let’s not kid ourselves; the high-end appliances are made much better and with higher-quality materials, but with all the makes and models out there, everyone can find a solid oven that fits their budget. We recommend also taking into consideration what one’s budget is for replacement parts, because even top-of-the-line machines can break, and then you might be dealing with a $10,000 loss rather than one of a few hundred dollars.

Is it more complicated to replace high-end appliance parts than those of more standard models?

In general, high-end appliances are a little more complicated, because the parts can be harder to get and are more costly, and some products need to be serviced by people who are specially trained. A lower-end machine can usually be serviced by the average repairman.

What’s the most expensive appliance you’ve worked with?

A Dacor oven with a $15,000 price tag. It’s a physically beautiful piece; people are known to have complete Dacor kitchens.

What are the sturdiest appliances that you would recommend to customers?

Every machine, ranging from high-end to lowerbudget models, has its own problems, and there’s a lot of mazel involved. You can buy two of the exact same item, and one will go bad in five years while the other will develop issues in three weeks.

Do you feel that some companies design their items to self-destruct through planned obsolescence?

Not necessarily. Times, though, have changed, and it is apparent in every market. Take cars, for instance; they used to be much sturdier than the cheap build of today. That goes for appliances, too. You also

have to take into consideration that modern appliances are much more computerized than older models, which were simply affected by wear and tear. Computers can glitch, there can be blackouts or brownouts, and the control board can fry. We always say that you have to be a computer tech to repair a machine nowadays.

Are there any tips you can share with our readers TO HELP THEM get the most out of their appliances and extend product longevity?

Keep them all clean — that’s really the best and most important thing

you can do for appliances. Sometimes we go down to a call and find an oven that is ten years old but has been very well taken care of, and it shows. Other times we find an oven that has only been cleaned very infrequently and has rust caused by grease buildup.

The screws in such an oven can crack when we try to take them out. In general, everything deteriorates more quickly without maintenance.

What are some cleaning tips you can offer?

Clean out the rubber of front loaders after use, and use Affresh tablets

once a month or so, because soap scum buildup can really cause problems.

You can pick up Affresh tablets at most hardware stores, both for washing machines and dishwashers.

Dryer lint traps should be emptied each time you change a load, and the dryer vent should be cleaned out every few years.

Always leave the door of a washing machine open after washing so it can air out and prevent mold — except if you have the new GE machine that has a built-in vent. That needs to be closed after each load so the vent can dry it out.

Using the self-clean feature on ovens runs the risk of the high heat shattering the glass or causing overheating, which can damage the oven.

What about before Pesach? If it’s only once a year, is the selfclean feature such a concern?

Once a year is less risky than doing it often, of course, but with the wall ovens, especially, self-clean is an issue. We get calls from people who used the self-clean feature on a brand-new oven and ended up with a broken oven. For such ovens, we recommend not using it; it is a risk.

What are the most common repairs you do?

Replacing oven ignitors, which are like lightbulbs. A common first warning sign that there’s something wrong with the ignitor is that an oven takes very long to preheat. Other times, people hear what sounds like a mini explosion.

Oven fires are also pretty common in recent models, because of a feature that most new ovens have: the browning feature. It used to be that when you turned on the average oven, it baked from below. Now when you turn on the oven, the broiler turns on together with the fire from below, and parchment paper can catch fire. We’ve had a lot of calls about this. People are also complaining that their challahs burn on top but remain raw in the middle, and that’s also because of this browning feature. This can be prevented by us-

Computerized Fridges, QUESTIONABLE Kosher Ovens, and Shabbos Many of us grew up with the notion that a refrigerator’s only concern on Shabbos is its lightbulb, which has to be deactivated in some way. Then, all of a sudden, “Shabbos fridges” began to pop up. I asked Rabbi Tzvi Ortner, posek of the Shabbos Keeper device, to explain the current concerns with refrigerators.

In our conversation, I learned that the lighting actually became less problematic over time (but still remains an issue) because the bulb became sparkless, while the rest of the modern refrigerator is halachically problematic as it operates via multiple sensors and computer systems. These systems are always busy calculating the temperature outside the fridge, inside the fridge, and tracking the amount of times the door is opened, etc. These calculations inform the machine when it’s time to release more cold air or to turn on the heating system to prevent frost buildup. Fans are also activated to guide the air where it needs to go, and little doorways can be electronically opened or closed, depending on the need. These issues are quite complex, but because they’re hidden from the eye, many people don’t even realize there are halachic difficulties in regard to Shabbos.

While discussing the halachic complexities of appliances with Rabbi Ortner, I brought up what I’ve heard is — sadly — a widespread issue of chillul Shabbos: incorrect use of the ovens that are advertised as 100% Kosher Shabbos Ovens. According to rabbanim I’ve spoken to, people have actually taken to putting food into the oven on Shabbos!

Rabbi Ortner explained that the concern is far greater than I’d originally thought. He told me that modern ovens feature a flame that turns on and off with the

Fires can also be caused by spilled oil. Remember: In case of a fire, make sure to keep the door closed. Never open the oven door! Generally, the fire will just die down if you do that.

We also fix drain pumps in washing machines fairly frequently. People notice that their machine isn’t draining or they get an ERROR code, and when we get there, we find that small objects have gotten stuck in the pump. Masks are pretty common these days, but pens, coins, hair, keys — anything that’s gone missing can end up in there. Always check your pockets before putting anything in the machine.

Which appliance is most difficult to repair?

If you know what you’re doing, none of them are difficult. But certain situations can make the job take longer and make a bigger mess. People don’t always calculate accessibility into the equation when they install a machine.

We once had a customer who was very upset, saying her

washing machine would cost her $50,000. Her designer had installed very beautiful molding around all of her appliances, and in order to service the machine, the molding had to be completely removed and rebuilt. She was also limited with her future choice of machine because the measurements were so precise.

Logistics have to make sense. Appliances need to fit through the door and have ample room for installation and servicing.

Do you recommend purchasing warranties for all appliances?

In general, extended warranties are recommended for all appliances. Things do break, and warranties can save customers a lot of money. Some companies schlep around when it comes to fixing and replacing parts, so do your research on specific companies before purchasing an appliance. There are great warranty options, and we educate our clients about them.

What’s your experience with the Shabbos devices that attach to refrigerators to make them more acceptable for Shabbos? I’ve heard that the original DEVICE BROKE machines, and because of that, it’s basically off the market. Does the new GE Shabbos Keeper have the same issues?

The original Shabbos device was made by a third-party company and definitely broke many machines because it played around with the software. We’ve heard hundreds of stories.

With the GE device, it’s made specifically for GE products, so the software is compatible.

You also get the warranty directly from GE. Of course, there are different companies that sell refrigerators with built-in Shabbos modes, but the GE Shabbos Keeper is the most machmir. Because refrigerators are very computerized now, everyone should ask their own rav for guidance in choosing a refrigerator.

Any more words of wisdom?

There’s something that we’d like to ask of the community: If you call a service company to schedule a repair but they’re not available at a time that works best for you, you’re definitely entitled to call around and find someone else who is. We know what it’s like to run a heimish household with a bunch of kids; when an appliance breaks, it’s important to get it repaired as quickly as possible. But if you book a slot with one company and then book with a different company that offers better timing, please call back the first company and cancel your original booking. If you forget to cancel the appointment, there’s a loss of income as well as a potential client who is being denied service.

ho’s counting? I’m counting! I’ve just slid out of my seventh decade and am tiptoeing into my eighth. When I awoke on the morning of my significant birthday and said Modeh Ani, I paused and thought, “Wow! Hashem has found it in His mercy to return my neshamah to me for 365 days of 70 years. That is a great deal of kindness and faith!” For the words “rabbah emunasecha” refer to Hashem’s faith in us — that we will do something of worth during that day.

The tefillah we say before reciting Tehillim states, “May You not take us from this world before our time, before completion of our years (among them are 70 years) so that we can rectify anything we have ruined.” Not every edition includes the words in parentheses, but it gives me the feeling that 70 years is a fair amount of time to have accomplished something significant in life and to make things right.

Do I know what I have accomplished? Impossible, for the good and for the opposite. How can I possibly know the fallout of my conversations and interactions with the thousands and thousands of people who have crossed my path over these years? Did my curt answer to the person trying to sneak in before me on the bus ignite anger and set off a chain reaction of misdeeds that trace back to my self-righteous words? Or the times that I ignored the woman

whose exhausted body swayed to and fro in front of me as the bus lurched and I sat safely in my seat? What happened when she finally reached home?

In the plus column, I have no way to estimate the lasting effects or the farreaching echoes of the myriad guests who have graced our home, or of the friendly hellos and smiles I have disseminated. Only Hashem knows the impact my actions have had.

What I do know is that I need to foster a new appreciation for the opportunities that life offers. I don’t believe that I would be able to take advantage of them all, but my prayer is that I be aware of them. Not as a burden, but as a precious chance to increase my deposits. An investment for the future with no worries about which way the stock market will react. It will always be a bull market.

These last few months have had me squirreled away in my own corner, with not much interaction with the outside world. But, not to worry. Hashem has His ways.

Just days after my birthday, I noticed that the ice was a bit watery, the bread in the freezer had defrosted, and the frozen vegetables were bendable.

Not an auspicious sign. But somewhere in the deeper pockets of my memory was the recollection that four years earlier, when we bought the refrigerator, we bought multiple years’ worth of insurance. What remained was to find the slip of paper confirming my memory.

Out came the foot-high pile of warranties and manuals for the appliances, large and small, we had purchased in the last few decades. Slipped into a plastic sleeve was the proof of my memory.

My husband contacted the company, who checked their records and said we showed up on the computer as having bought insurance, but that it had lapsed. Looking at all the small slips of paper stapled to the initial receipt of purchase I read: Insurance ends August, 2021. I showed my husband what I found as he was setting up the appoint-

ment for the repairman.

“Miss Estie, I think there is some mistake,” my husband said. “The paper we have clearly states that the refrigerator is covered until August 2021.”

“Just a moment, I will check again.”

Several moments later, “Oh, you’re right. It’s because you hadn’t sent in the paper with the details of purchase that the information wasn’t transferred.

You only need to pay the 120 shekel deductible. That needs to be paid via credit card now.”

My inner antennas were activated to a high alert.

“We have insurance and we prepaid the 120 shekel deductible fee,” I said.

“Oh, that is with another insurance,” he announced with a smile.

I tried to quiet the voice that was whispering, “Thief.”

“Estie assured us that all we needed to pay was the 120 deductible.” I tried to keep my voice even, but inwardly I was already preparing my attack.

“Do you want me to call the office?

I’ll call right now,” he said, and he confidently punched in the number and activated the speaker.

“I’m at the Poupko house,”he said.

“The compressor went. I told them that it will cost 700 shekels with the insurance, and they said they only have to pay 120 and that it was already paid.”

“Yes,” Estie replied.

“It’s 700 shekels, right?”

My normal instinct would have been to pounce on the discrepancy and chew hard and loud about this “mistake.” But glancing at some birthday balloons still floating around, I was reminded of my new philosophy.

He claims there are different levels of insurance. He seemed so sure of himself and was willing to call the office and place it on speaker.

A compressor turns a liquid into a gas.

Compressing my instinct to attack, I could turn a judgment into a justification and one of life’s lumps into an asset in my Heavenly account!

I said nothing.

Packing up his tools, the technician turned to me and said, “I’m really impressed. Other people would have made such a big fuss. I’ll see if I can get them to order the compressor right away.”

Organizing the Time You can adjust this timetable to your personal schedule.

Total prep/cooking time: including soup, 3 hours and 30 minutes; without soup, 1 hour and 20 minutes

3:20 p.m.

Cook the peas for the soup.

5:15 p.m.

Peel and shred the vegetables for the soup.

Rinse the food processor parts right away.

SPLIT PEA SOUP This soup is simple to prepare but does require ample cooking time. (You might choose to make this on a day off if you have a full-day work schedule.) The quantity it yields makes it worthwhile, though!

Vegetable soups make fantastic freezer stockers. Freeze in 1-quart containers. Remove from the freezer 8 hours before serving, and heat defrosted soup in a 2-quart pot on a low flame for 30 minutes.

Peel and dice the mushrooms and the red pepper for the rice.

INGREDIENTS

5:50 p.m.

1 (16 oz.) package yellow split peas 10 cups water ¼ cup oil 2 medium onions 1 lb. carrots 1 zucchini 1 parsnip 1 small knob celery 1 garlic clove 2 T. salt

Add vegetables to the soup, bring to a boil and lower the flame.

Dice the onion for the rice and the fish.

Set the table.

6:05 p.m.

Saute the onions for the rice.

6:15 p.m.

Add the vegetables to the rice. Bring to a boil and lower flame.

6:20 p.m.

Saute the onions for the fish.

6:30 p.m.

Remove the frozen mango from the freezer.

Add the fish to the pan.

6:40 p.m.

Remove the rice from heat.

Blend the mango and put it into the freezer.

6:45 p.m.

Fluff the rice.

Wash the food processor.

6:50 p.m.

Remove the fish and the soup from heat.

Supper is ready to be served!

DIRECTIONS 1. Place the first three ingredients into an 8-quart pot. Turn the flame on high.

When the water starts to boil, lower the flame to low-medium and cook for 2½ hours, until split peas are soft. (If the peas have not dissolved, you can blend it with an immersion blender.)

2. Peel vegetables. Fit the food processor helicopter with the fine shredder blade, and place it into the machine.

Shred all vegetables. (You can also shred the vegetables by hand with a foursided grater.)

3. Turn the flame to high. Add the shredded vegetables and salt to the cooked peas. When it begins to boil, lower the flame to low-medium and cook for 1 hour.

SAUTEED ONION FISH

MANGO SORBET

This is a most simple and very tasty fish. The recipe calls for tilapia, but it works with salmon and flounder as well.

This sorbet is a super-quick go-to dessert. Freeze extras in portion-size containers. Remove frozen sorbet from the freezer 10 minutes before serving to soften.

INGREDIENTS

2 slices tilapia 1 onion 2 T. oil ¼ tsp. black pepper ¼ tsp. paprika 2 T. fresh lemon juice

1 (16 oz.) bag frozen mango cubes ¾ cup orange juice ¼ cup sugar

DIRECTIONS 1. Defrost mango for 10 minutes.

2. Place the S blade into the food processor, and then add all the ingredients. Blend until smooth and creamy.

DIRECTIONS 1. Cut the onion in half. Place it cut-side down on the plate and slice thinly.

2. Place the onions and the oil into a frying pan. Saute on medium heat until the onions turn golden, stirring occasionally.

3. Add the fish and the rest of the ingredients. Cook for 20 minutes.

Alternatively, you can use an immersion blender instead of the food processor. Allow the mango to defrost for 15 minutes, and place it into a 2 -quart container along with the rest of the ingredients (adding an extra ¼ to ½ cup of juice). Blend. The consistency will be more watery than when done in the food processor.

3. Place in freezer until 5 minutes before dessert time.

MUSHROOM RICE Rice makes a great starch staple. This recipe yields 4 to 6 servings. Freeze the remaining rice in small aluminum pans and warm it in the oven for a quick supper solution.

INGREDIENTS 1 medium onion 3 T. oil 1½ cups white rice

½ red pepper 1 (10 oz.) box of mushrooms (or an 8 oz. can of mushrooms)

2 tsp. kosher salt 3 cups water ¼ tsp. black pepper

DIRECTIONS 1. Dice the onion. Add it to a 2-quart pot together with the oil. Turn the flame to medium, and when the onion starts to turn golden (after approximately 10 minutes), add the rice.

2. Continue to saute until the rice catches a bit of a brownish tinge.

3. Dice peppers. Peel, check and dice the mushrooms.

4. Add the diced vegetables along with the rest of the ingredients to the pot and turn the flame a bit higher. When it starts to boil, reduce the flame to low and cook for 20 to 25 minutes until the water is absorbed.

5. Turn off the flame and keep the rice covered for another 5 minutes. Then fluff it with a fork.

KINTSUGI Golden Repair

There’s fixing, and then there is celebrating brokenness as unique. There is repair, and then there is Kintsugi.

This centuries-old Japanese art is a method of pottery repair that emphasizes — nay, beautifies — the flaws of an artifact. Cracks are seamed with lacquered resin and powdered gold, silver or platinum to create an eye-catching design on heretofore broken shards, making the broken item gorgeous in its fixing.

Kintsugi happened when the 15th century military leader — or shogun, as Japanese say — Ashikaga Yoshimasa broke his favorite tea bowl and sent it to China for repairs. He hated the way it came back, all unsightly and sporting ugly metal pins.

Local craftsmen saved the day by filling the crack with golden lacquer. Now the bowl was more unique and valuable than before — and voila, a new art form was born.
