BEWARE OF OUTSIDE INFLUENCES
(Re: Inbox, Issue 86) In last week’s Inbox, The Boro Park View explained the reason for publishing the story The Impostor. The purpose, you wrote, is to warn the public about the consequences of turning to something other than the heilige Torah for direction due to desperation. I think it’s important to add that in today’s generation, too, there is a lot of suffering and confusion. Out of desperation people forget about the Torah’s way and think that they can heal themselves with certain concepts and techniques that contradict the Torah. Unfortunately, many people turn to professionals who have secular training and an approach that is completely anti-Torah. More troubling, sometimes, is that their outer appearance and general lifestyle would not suggest that their professional occupation is completely foreign to Yiddishkeit. They are indeed impostors. Unfortunately, the community is paying an expensive price for this: Too many neshamos have been sacrificed, some more obviously and others less so. Even if some individuals had some degree of success with these professionals, in the big picture, the damage enormously outweighs any claim of success. Let’s learn from history not to let our problems and desperation for help misdirect us. And let us do the proper research before pursuing anything they may impact our spiritual health. DANGEROUS ADVICE
(Re: Cooking Class for Beginners, Issue 85) The recipes last week for the newlyweds were delicious, and I tried the cutlets myself even though I’m neither a newlywed nor a beginner cook. Just one little correction is in order. You noted that when heating oil, one should spray a droplet of water onto the oil to test whether it’s hot enough. This is very dangerous. If the oil is too hot, it may send up shooting flames! (This is coming from experience.) (Re: In Place of Your Presence, Issue 85) Although I appreciated the tips on how to alleviate stress for baalei simcha, there are certain points with which I take issue. First, apologizing beforehand for not attending a simcha will have the ba’al simcha replying with platitudes like “Don’t worry about it,” or “We know you’d love to be there,” while otherwise she may not have given it a second thought. Second, diet or no diet, a stunning cake is a wonderful gift; a “10-inch-high temptation” can be placed on the dessert table to be enjoyed by guests. However, please don’t surprise the ba’al simcha with the cake at the affair. When a ba’al simcha knows about an additional cake in advance, she’ll make sure to order one less beforehand, and she’ll also know to leave room for it on the dessert table. Third, placing a call during a simcha to wish mazel tov is a no-no. The ba’al simcha probably won’t be (and shouldn’t be) toting a phone or answering calls on anyone else’s phone. Finally, please don’t greet the ba’al simcha with details of how difficult it was to attend their simcha (whether it may be due to bumper-to-bumper traffic, cancellation of the babysitter, a two-year old’s tantrum, a three-year-old’s raging fever, “I have the flu but came anyway,” “I couldn’t fit into anything appropriate to wear,” “I had another function on the other end of town,” etc.). One final pointer for the ba’al simcha: If I was unable to attend your simcha, please don’t accost me at our next meeting with “Why weren’t you there?” You can be sure that I wanted to attend, but probably had a good reason not to. I distinctly recall a trip to a chasunah (I was already halfway to the city) in the midst of a raging blizzard, where we had to turn back. Another occasion had me prepped and ready to leave the house to attend a simcha… which had already taken place the night before. We’ve all been there and meant well, so, mazel tov! R.S.

After the Meraglim returned with their discouraging reports of Eretz Yisroel, the Yidden cried, disappointed to hear what was awaiting them. It was then decreed that the entire generation could not enter Eretz Yisroel; the Yidden would remain in the Midbar for 40 years. What was so terrible about Klal Yisroel’s response that warranted such a serious punishment? The Spies spoke negatively, but all the Yidden did was shed some tears over their seemingly dismal future! IT WAS A CLASSICAL rags to riches story. One day Zalmen was a poor construction worker slogging for his bread, and the next day he was wealthier than any man in town. Zalmen was at work when he noticed something glistening in the soil. He lifted the little pebble and brushed off the dirt. Wow! What a sparkle caught his eye! It was a brilliant stone, resplendently reflecting the light of the sun. At day’s end, Zalmen rushed to the local jeweler. “Indeed, my friend,” the diamond dealer exclaimed. “You’ve found a treasure! This diamond is worth more than anything a local merchant would pay.” The jeweler advised Zalmen to travel to a distant city where he could earn the full value of his rare find.

Zalmen scraped together enough money for the trip to the port city, but he had no means to pay for the voyage. At the harbor, he approached the ship’s captain and asked for a favor. “I have a precious stone with me,” he whispered, while exposing his treasure, “and as soon as we get to our destination, I’ll find a buyer and then pay you back every last cent of my fare.” The captain took one look at Zalmen’s grubby attire and was filled with newfound appreciation. Ah! He’s dressed like a pauper so that no one should realize what a fortune he’s carrying… Now that’s a shrewd businessman! Zalmen was given a suite in first class, where he was treated in style throughout the journey. One evening, as dinner was wind-
ing down in the classy lobby restaurant, Zalmen dozed off. Meanwhile, the cleaning crew came around and cleared the table. The trash was dumped directly into the sea. A little later, Zalmen awoke. With a start, he realized that everything had been taken off the table — his precious diamond included! He broke into a sweat. It can’t be! he thought. Should I jump into the water to try and find my fortune? As the initial shock wore off, Zalmen calmed down. Not only was his catch-of-a-lifetime deal over, but he also had no money for the captain. That’s it! He rationalized. I’m no longer Mr. Rothschild #2, but that doesn’t mean I cannot travel in class. Let me enjoy the rest of the trip in peace. He didn’t tell a soul about his loss. Instead he accepted his lot, believing that this had all been orchestrated by the One Above. The next morning, the captain approached Zalmen, who was pauper once more. “I see you are an astute businessman, and I have a business proposal for you,” he said quietly. “In the bowels of the ship, I have a huge supply of wheat. It’s worth a lot, but I am afraid that the customs officials may confiscate it if they know it’s mine. Perhaps you’d be willing to sign on these documents, stating that the
grains belong to you. You’ll pretend that you’ll be taking the load with you after we dock. And I’ll compensate you well,” the captain added. Zalmen agreed. He signed on the dotted lines, and the deal was done. The ship soon arrived at its destination, and as everyone gathered their packages and disembarked, there was a ruckus in the quarterdeck. The captain had suffered a heart attack! Zalmen lingered around a bit longer and found out that the captain had breathed his last. But the deal had been signed. The entire inventory of grain now rightfully belonged to Zalmen. One of the tzaddikim, in relating this tale, explained that riches were destined for Zalmen — and not through the diamond, but through the wheat. However, Zalmen was first tested from Shamayim to see if he would remain steadfast in his emunah or fall into despair when things did not go his way. Zalmen would have had all the right to fall into depression when he lost his wealth. But had he done so, he never would have reached his true destiny; the captain trusted him with his business deal on the premise that Zalmen was an entrepreneur. Thus, his acceptance and trust were the catalyst for his prosperity. * * * * * Vast “riches” awaited Klal Yisroel. Had they gone into Eretz Yisroel right away, they would have reached the peak of creation. Moshe Rabbeinu would have entered along with them, and the Beis Hamikdash would never have been destroyed. Klal Yisroel would have lived peacefully in Eretz Yisroel until this very day — with no Galus needed. But just before Klal Yisroel reached this very high point, Hashem sent an extra nisayon in the form of the Meraglim. Were the Yidden to strengthen their emunah and bitachon, they would become “gevirim,” eternal masters of the Land. Instead, they cried that entire night. They fell into despair and complained. Thus, through a natural course of events, their awaited treasure was taken from them.
Did You Know? Don Yitzchak Abarbanel encouraged the Yidden to play music as they were expelled from Spain. He comforted them with the thought that the very date of their expulsion — Tisha B’Av, the day set aside for tears since the night of the Meraglim — proved Hashem’s involvement in this chapter of Jewish history. In fact, had King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella realized what an inspiration the date they chose would be to the poor refugees, they may have reconsidered.

I grew up a real lover of junk food. I was the girl with the most goodies for snack, our family made the best oneg Shabbos parties, and three-scoop ice cream cones on a Motzei Shabbos were almost routine. When I got married, I filled my kitchen cabinets with a fabulous array of cookies, chocolate and sour sticks; my bathroom with all of my favorite toothpastes, shampoos and detergents; and of course, my closets with sweet-smelling potpourri sachets. Things didn’t change overnight; my first baby got his bath with Johnson’s yellow baby shampoo, followed by pink lotion. But by the time my second child was born, I was more wary. I began looking at ingredients and doing some research, and slowly, what had previously looked like a long list of unidentifiable mumbo-jumbo was turning into a very understandable ingredient list... of various kinds of poison. (I wish I could say this more gently, but it is what it is!) Soon I had a dream to nurture, nourish and protect my children using clean and simple bath products. What’s Really Inside? A puff of creamy, colored shampoo squeezed onto your hands looks so innocent, as does a mist of perfumed cleanser sprayed onto your kitchen table. But usually, some really bad guys are lurking inside. You may not realize it, but everything that goes onto your skin goes straight into your body, and what fills the air around you is inhaled immediately into your lungs. Here’s just a peek at some of those little monsters that are hiding in the everyday products we use: Sulfates, which are chemicals used as cleansing agents, were originally patented as a pesticide and herbicide. Yes, you read right — the same stuff you use to wash your hair was created to kill things! The American College of Toxicology has been quoted as saying that sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) has “a degenerative effect on the cell membranes because of its protein denaturing properties.” In other words, sulfates break down skin cells and prevent your skin from properly replenishing itself. This makes it easier for other harmful chemicals to penetrate the skin instead. Sulfates also strip the natural oils from your hair and skin, promoting dryness and irritation, speeding up signs of aging, and causing degenerative skin conditions like psoriasis and dermatitis. And dandruff!
Parabens, used as preservatives, can act like the hormone estrogen and disrupt the normal function of hormone systems and increase the risk of cancer. They’re usually listed on products looking something like “methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, isopropyl-, butyl-, or isobutyl parabens.” Phthalates are also everywhere. In the past few years, researchers have linked phthalates to asthma, ADHD, cancer, obesity and type II diabetes, low IQ, neurodevelopmental issues, behavioral issues, autism spectrum disorders and fertility issues. On top of that, the United States EPA classifies phthalates (DEP) as a Priority and Toxic Pollutant because of its harmful effects on wildlife and the environment. PEGS, used as thickeners and softeners, often contain ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane. The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies ethylene oxide as a known carcinogen (a substance capable of causing cancer) and 1,4-dioxane as a possible carcinogen. These two are also known to inflame and harm the respiratory system; in fact, this chemical was used as nerve gas during World War I! Petrolatum, used as a moisturizing agent, can be contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Studies suggest that exposure to PAHs can be associated with cancer, and can also cause skin irritation and allergies. Synthetic fragrances often contain petroleum-based chemicals (like phthalates mentioned above) and benzene derivatives, aldehydes and toluene, which are known carcinogens. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), some can even trigger neurological problems and asthma attacks, as well allergic reactions. What you think is just a delicious scent is actually a pool of poison!
Why Are These Things FDA-Approved? In a perfect world, we can stroll down the aisles of any shop and select products, confident that everything we buy is strictly regulated for our safety. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is supposed to be that watchdog for us… but it can take years for new research to make its way through the bureaucracy to make a dent in their policies. The FDA doesn’t deny that these chemicals may be harmful, and they allow many of them only in limited amounts. The problem is that nowadays we are all subject to cumulative exposure from chemicals found in our food, personal care products, household essentials, furniture and more. This causes a toxic overload on our bodies and contributes to a wide range of health problems. Oddly enough, the European Union law bans 1,328 chemicals from cosmetics that are known or suspected to cause cancer, genetic mutation, fertility issues or birth defects. Meanwhile, in the United States, the FDA has banned or restricted only eleven such chemicals. Chemicals permitted in the United States and banned elsewhere include parabens,
which were banned by the EU in 2012, as well as the preservatives BHA and BHT. BHA is considered a human carcinogen, and both BHA and BHT can promote tumor growth and impair blood clotting. In fact, one of the most popular brands of laundry detergent in the United States has been banned in Europe because it carries high levels of dioxane, which is absorbed through the skin when one’s clothes are exposed to it. There have been links between dioxane exposure and cancer, and many other terrible conditions.

CHAPTER 10 RECAP: Shabbesai Tzvi tasks three of his loyal followers with investigating the dragon’s teeth mentioned in the dream Avraham Techini reveals. One night, Yechiel Tomashav is summoned to the palace, where the grand vizier asks him whether he is the Jewish silk merchant.
“I
am a Jewish silk merchant, Your Excellency,” replied Yechiel cautiously. “And I live
in Smyrna.” “Your caution is commendable, young man, but misplaced. I have never met you, but I know about you. You’ve been supplying silks to the palace for quite a while, haven’t you?” “Yes, your excellency. It has been my honor.” “But you haven’t appeared personally at the palace for as long as I have been in office.” Yechiel fidgeted. “Family concerns have occupied my time. I took a wife, and my son was born. I also left Smyrna for a while to spend time with my family in Poland, and after my return, I’ve been busy putting my affairs in order and traveling on business. Still, I’ve always made certain that only the most exquisite silks were sent to the palace.” “There have been no complaints about the silks.” Kiuprili pulled out a snuffbox and flipped up the cover with his thumb. Suddenly, he snapped the snuffbox

shut and fixed Yechiel with a cold stare. “As to your absence from the palace,” he snapped, “you probably felt it was safer to stay away for the present, isn’t that so?” Yechiel’s heart pounded wildly in his chest. The bitter taste of danger was in his mouth. “I am a guest in your beautiful land,” he said, struggling to maintain his composure. “My father has always told me that a guest should remain in his room if there is a crisis in the home of the host. It is best for everyone.” Kiuprili smiled. “Your father gave you good advice, young man. However, there is no longer any crisis. Feel free to come to the palace. The sultan enjoys your company.” Yechiel breathed a sigh of relief, but Kiuprili’s next question caught him completely off guard. “Why do you need to know about the dragon’s teeth?” asked the grand vizier. Confusion played across Yechiel’s face. Panic gripped at his throat. It had never dawned on him that his in-
quiries would touch a sensitive nerve at the palace. There was no time to think of a plausible story. Whatever the consequences, he had no choice but to tell the truth. The grand vizier’s shrewd eyes read Yechiel’s tumultuous thoughts, and he smiled with satisfaction. He had played the young man just right. He would hear the truth. Yechiel drew a deep breath and plunged into his story. He offered only the briefest descriptions of Shabbesai Tzvi and the events that led to his expulsion from Smyrna and Salonika, but he repeated Avraham Yechini’s dream in the most minute detail. Kiuprili listened in fascination until Yechiel finished. “Are you quite sure Yechini had never before seen Shabbesai Tzvi?” he asked. “Absolutely, Your Excellency.” “Very interesting. In fact, it is quite amazing. We have not been unaware of this Shabbesai Tzvi here at the palace. We have been watching him carefully. You’ve passed quickly over his experiences in Smyrna and Salonika, young man, but we know everything that happened. Everything.” Yechiel’s blood thundered in his ears. It was common knowledge that the grand vizier dealt ruthlessly with all potential rebels in the Empire. If they viewed Shabbesai Tzvi as a rebel, he was in mortal danger. Feverishly, he struggled to formulate a defense of Shabbesai Tzvi, but the grand vizier’s
rasping voice interrupted his thoughts. “Tell me, young man. I gather you’re one of Shabbesai Tzvi’s followers. Is that not so?” Yechiel nodded. “Is he really a master of Kabbalah?” Yechiel sensed a faint glimmer of hope. “Indeed, Your Excellency!” he exclaimed. “Shabbesai Tzvi is one of the greatest masters of Kabbalah in the world. He has the power to rise into the heavens at will and converse with the angels. He has the power to heal and to destroy. He can see from one end of the world to the other. He knows the future and the past. He’s wise beyond wisdom, holy beyond holiness. Heaven smiles upon him and protects him. His friends will join him in Paradise. His enemies will descend to the abyss from which there is no return.” “I’ve no doubt this Shabbesai Tzvi is a holy man,” grunted Kiuprili. “We are fully aware of the exceptional power of Kabbalah. The exploits of Rabbi Isaac Luria and his disciples in the Holy Land during the last century are extensively recorded in the archives of the Empire. We’re willing to tolerate Shabbesai Tzvi, even though he claims to be the Messiah, out of respect for the Kabbalah. But should he ever dare turn the power of the Kabbalah against the crown, he will discover that the power of the Empire is far greater than anything at his command.” “I assure you, Your Excellency,” said Yechiel, “that my master would not dream of doing anything against the best interests of the state or the crown. He is a man of peace. He abhors violence.” “For his sake, I hope you are right.” Kiuprili paused and scratched his forehead. “I suppose it would do no harm to tell you about the dragon’s teeth,” he said at last. “Especially in view of Yechini’s remarkable dream. Of course, I cannot be sure that these are the same dragon’s teeth you’re seeking. Perhaps they belong to a different dragon.” Kiuprili laughed at his own witticism. Yechiel smiled weakly and held his breath, waiting for Kiuprili to continue. “About a day’s ride east of Constantinople,” said the grand vizier, “near the village of Escutrun, there’s a deep cavern whose entrance lies behind a waterfall. Access to the lower cavern is surrounded by a ring of jagged rocks, which, according to local superstition, were once teeth in the mouth of a dragon. Legend has it that one of the Byzantine emperors had his rebellious son blinded and thrown into the lower cavern, behind the dragon’s teeth. The prince spent the rest of his short life in the pit. Some say he became mad toward the end. Everyone in Escutrun knows where the dragon’s teeth are, but no one goes there. It’s an evil place. That’s all I can tell you.” “That’s all I need to know, Your Excellency. I’m most grateful to you.” “You would have found out yourself soon enough,” said Kiuprili with a nonchalant wave of his hand. Make sure the dragon doesn’t bite you.” The captain of the guard appeared and beckoned Yechiel to follow him, but the grand vizier’s guffaws echoed in his ears long after he left the palace. A humid dawn was breaking when he returned to his rooms. Two days later, Shabbesai Tzvi and his party left Constantinople for Escutrun. Seated beside him in the carriage was Avraham Yechini. Yechiel Tomashov, Gamliel Basnoun and Mukian the Macedonian were wedged into the opposite bench. They arrived in Escutrun late at night and slept in a tumbledown hostelry in the center of the village. In the morning, they asked the innkeeper how to find the cavern of the dragon’s teeth. The innkeeper rolled his eyes and unleashed a torrent of words in a strange dialect, but he gave them directions nonetheless. The caverns were situated less than an hour’s walk away. cured several torches, a shovel and a rope ladder, which he carried in a burlap sack slung over his left shoulder. An aura of pleasurable excitement embraced Shabbesai Tzvi and the little group. They had no idea what they were meant to find behind the dragon’s teeth, but somehow, they were certain they were headed for a rendezvous with destiny. Only Avraham Yechini seemed to be under any tension. His eyes burned with an almost unbearable anticipation. The sound of the waterfall reached their ears before it came into sight, tumbling over an outcropping of rock and cascading down into a small pool. A broad ledge led to the caverns behind the waterfall. Mukian the Macedonian lit the torches as soon as they stepped into the gloomy interior of the caverns. Huge spider webs hung like tapestries from the walls, and a steady dripdrip of water echoed forth from the deep bowels of the upper chamber. In the center of the floor was a gaping hole surrounded by jagged rocks. At last, they had found the dragon’s teeth. Gamliel Basnoun was the first to venture over to the dragon’s teeth. He leaned out over the edge and extended his torch as far as he could. Suddenly, he let out a piercing shriek and jumped back. A flock of dark shapes came fluttering out of the depths. “They’re only bats, Gamliel,” said Avraham Yechini with a harsh laugh. “They won’t harm you. Come, Mukian. Drop that rope ladder down, and let’s have a look.” “Shall we go down, Master?” asked Mukian. Shabbesai Tzvi remained standing in one spot, his eyes closed, his face aglow in the flickering torchlight. Finally, he opened his eyes and nodded.

Mukian flung the burlap sack to the ground and reached into it for the rope ladder. While bending over, he bumped into Avraham Yechini. With a cry of alarm, Yechini clasped his right hand to his side as if to safeguard something concealed under his voluminous robe. “Why don’t you watch what you’re doing?” he snapped. “You almost knocked me over.” Mukian gave Yechini an odd look. He’d come nowhere near knocking him over. He’d only brushed against the tall man’s robe. The man was much too uptight. Why was he so tense? It was odd. Mukian shrugged away his suspicions and continued unraveling the rope ladder. “Avraham, you are too tense,” said Shabbesai Tzvi. “What do you intend to do once we’re down there?”
“I don’t know. I feel driven by something.” “Be calm, Avraham. Be calm.” Avraham Yechini nodded and made a visible effort to relax. Slowly, they climbed down the rope ladder into the lower chamber of the cavern. The air was clammy, and a dank smell filled their nostrils. The light of the torches revealed three long corridors leading off in different directions, and piles of rocky rubble were everywhere. Avraham Yechini looked at Shabbesai Tzvi. “I have a strong feeling that what we are seeking is nearby,” he said, “but I have no idea where to begin the search. Perhaps you can sense the place.” Shabbesai Tzvi thought this over and nodded gravely. He closed his eyes and began to murmur something under his breath. Then he opened his eyes, raised his right hand and pointed to the corridor on the right. Several paces into the corridor, Gamliel let out a bloodcurdling yelp. He had stumbled onto a strange-looking skull and a scattering of bleached bones. He stood there trembling violently as the others rushed to his side. Shabbesai Tzvi put his hand gently on Gamliel’s arm. “Do not be afraid, my child,” he said. “These are merely the bones of a goat. It must have wandered into the cave and fallen into the lower chamber. Come, stay near my side, and you’ll feel safe. Let us continue.” The end of the corridor opened into a high-vaulted area piled with rubble, the remains of a segment of the cave that had once collapsed. Shabbesai Tzvi stared at the rubble for a long time. Finally, he pointed to one of the piles of rubble. “That is the one!” he exclaimed with forced conviction. “Start digging.” To be continued…

Cuomo said that there was no place for anti-Semitism anywhere in New York and that it would not be tolerated in any form. “Hate has no place in our state, and we will continue to do everything in our power to help ensure Jewish New Yorkers and New Yorkers of all faiths have the peace, safety and security they deserve,” said the governor. The NYSP will be reaching out to Jewish communities in an effort to establish communication and deal with potential security issues. The NYPD has stepped up its patrols in the city’s Jewish neighborhoods, reported Hamodia, with three men arrested for a pair of anti-Semitic attacks last weekend. One involved two teenaged boys who were attacked on Ocean Parkway near 18th Avenue and rescued by a Muslim Uber driver, as previously reported in The Boro Park View. The other took place at the Agudah shul on 16th Avenue and 49th Street, with the suspects reportedly shouting, “Kill all the Jews,” and other anti-Semitic statements at several Jewish men who were on the street. With bias crimes against other ethnic groups also on the rise, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced last week that the city’s Office for the Prevention of Hate Crimes would be launching a new initiative that would fund and support six community-based groups in the war on hate crimes. $3 million was allocated to the Anti-Violence Project, the Arab American Association of New York, the Asian American Federation, the Hispanic Federation, the Jewish Community Relations Council, and the 67th Precinct Clergy council. “These hate crimes and bias go against everything we believe in as New Yorkers and our whole history, our whole identity as New Yorkers,” said de Blasio. “Hate has no place here. We’ll educate people. We’ll show solidarity. We’ll have community-based efforts. We’ll have efforts in our schools. And we’ll also ensure there are consequences for anyone who commits a hate crime.” The FBI also responded to the recent rash of bias attacks, putting out posters and advertisements in both Yiddish and English, encouraging those who have been the target of a hate crime to report it to the authorities. William Sweeney, assistant director of the FBI’s New York Field Office, said that many hate crimes often go unreported because of language and cultural barriers.

“I don’t think the data that we have is an accurate representation of everything that is happening out in our communities,” said Sweeney. “One of the things we’ve been trying to push to do is to get a message out to those communities to report to us and to report to their local police departments, in particular, some of that information so that we can better address the problem.”
Mayoral Primary Heating Up as Yang and Adams Rack Up Endorsements With the June 22nd mayoral primary just weeks away, candidates Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and Andrew Yang have been making the rounds in the Jewish community hoping to pick up crucial endorsements. Yang made waves last week when he was unanimously backed by both Satmar factions, reported Hamodia. A newspaper advertisement in last Wednesday’s Yiddish papers had Satmar, Krasna, Klausenburg, Nitra, Pupa, Skver, Tzelem, Vien and Viznitz all calling on voters to rank Yang as their first choice. With this election the first in the city to feature ranked choice, allowing voters to also choose their second through fifth choice candidates, the ad called for voters to list Adams and Comptroller Scott Stringer as their second and third choices. “Mr. Yang stands firmly and openly against the unfounded threats to our education, and he says that he will focus on the outcome of the yeshivah education, rather than allow himself to be swayed by those who oppose it,” read the ad. “This makes it incumbent on us to support him.” Yang also has the endorsements of local Jewish elected officials, including Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein, City Councilman Kalman Yeger and Assemblyman Daniel Rosenthal. But Adams, who waffled when asked about standards for yeshivah education, followed up quickly with endorsements of his own, earning the support of Jewish leaders in Crown Heights and the Far Rockaway Jewish Alliance, which includes well over twenty community leaders. Rabbi Baruch Rothman, director of institutional advancement at Yeshiva Darchei Torah, said that he was supporting Adams because of his long friendship with the Jewish community and his tough stance on crime. While Yang is a newcomer to the world of government, Rothman cited Adams’ years of experience, noting that he “will be able to hit the ground running on day one.” Adams has also won the endorsement of The Jewish Press, which lauded the candidate for his 22 years of service in the NYPD, his strong support of police in the face of rising crime rates, and his excellent track record as borough president.

While earlier polls had shown Yang looking like a likely winner, things appear to be tightening up as the primary draws near. VIN News reported that a recent PIX 11 poll showed Adams edging out Yang, but both men are currently trailing former sanitation commissioner Kathryn Garcia, whose campaign has enjoyed a welcome boost after being endorsed by The New York Times and the Daily News.
Chlorine Shortage Threatens Pool Season With hot weather looming and pandemic restrictions easing, many are looking forward to the relaxing summer that never quite happened last year, but a nationwide shortage of chlorine tablets may leave swimmers high and dry in the days and weeks ahead. The New York Times reported that part of the problem is pandemic-related, since 96,000 new pools have been installed across the country over the past year as people had remained on lockdown. That number represents a 23% increase in pool construction over the previous year, but a report by Goldman Sachs estimated that an additional 110,000 pools will be built this year. The problem was significantly compounded by a fire that burned for three days last August at a Louisiana plant operated by Bio-Lab Inc., one of the largest pool and spa product producers in the country, which manufactures the majority of the chlorine tablets used by residential pool owners in the United States. Bio-Lab said that it had been storing 835 tons of chlorine tablets at the facility when the fire broke out, although it is unclear exactly how much of that supply was destroyed in the fire. With colder weather setting in a few weeks after the fire in much of the country, the dwindling supply of chlorine tablets attracted little attention until people began opening up their pools this spring. Bio-Lab is currently rebuilding its plant, but the new facility will not be open until next year. The Goldman Sachs report warned that pool owners will likely be paying 58% more for chlorine than they did last summer and that supply could be scarce. “Out of the 26 pool shops we spoke to, 15 expressed uncertainty or doubt when asked about whether they will have

enough chlorine for pool season,” said the report. Swimming pool consultant and educator Rudy Stankowitz advised against panic buying, which will only exacerbate the shortage. He suggested that people look into alternate methods of sanitizing their pools, such as with chemicals like borate — which prevents algae — or liquid chlorine bleach. The Pool and Hot Tub Alliance suggested other ideas, including making sure people shower before they use the pool, running the pool filter daily, and using liquid chlorine, calcium hypochlorite or potassium monopersulfate to kill algae and bacteria in pools.
Westchester Official Gets JetBlue Travel Credits for Entire Flight After Nightmarish Delays A full flight of Westchester-bound passengers will be earning JetBlue travel credits after a fellow traveler called the airline on the carpet for more than 15 hours of delays that were largely due to staffing issues. The Journal News reported that Westchester consumer protection director Jim Maisano was one of approximately 200 people booked on the April 12th flight from Fort Lauderdale, which was due to take off at 7:34 p.m. but was delayed by bad weather. Flight 814 was subsequently delayed four more times as the night went on and didn’t actually take off until 10:53 the next morning, leaving passengers spending the night in the airport with no food or drink available since all of the concessions were closed. Maisano said that JetBlue knew that the flight wouldn’t be leaving even as it announced revised takeoff times, and that over time, passengers learned that the delays dragged on endlessly because of staffing issues.“We were told by JetBlue personnel that too many of your pilots were furloughed during the pandemic,” said Maisano. Given his job of advocating for those who have been treated unfairly, Maisano wrote a letter to JetBlue’s president and CEO to share the frustrations of flight 814’s passengers, who at one point spent two hours on the plane sitting on the tarmac. Maisano noted that with other flights also canceled, there were thousands of people packed into a relatively small area in the terminal, a clear violation of social distancing protocols. As tempers rose, police were eventually called to the gate. “It was reasonable for passengers to be enraged because of the horrible way they were treated by JetBlue and the Fort Lauderdale Airport,” wrote Maisano. JetBlue told News 12 that bad weather that night had the airline forcing more than 70 delays and almost 40 cancellations in Florida and that crew members assigned to the flight had to be replaced because they had exceeded the legal number of hours they are allowed to work in any given day. A statement released by JetBlue said that they understood their customers’ frustrations and had taken steps to positively resolve the situation.

sat on the floor of the carpentry shop and examined the carvings in the wood. With half an ear, I heard Reb Elazar speaking. He has a regular seder, I see. He starts with the parsha on Wednesday evening and then gives another two shiurim on the parsha on Thursday and on Friday afternoon. Sometimes, he gives it in the carpentry shop; other times it can be in the back kitchen, or even on the beachfront. He happens to be a very interesting speaker, and despite the ugly hole I had mistakenly made with the machine in the middle of the word “V’achalta,” his words enveloped me and apparently also found an entry point to my head. “I really enjoyed that midrash about Yaakov Avinu,” I told him afterward. “I wonder if my father knows this midrash. He likes to tell us lots of midrashim at the Shabbos table.” “Tell him, and you’ll find out.” “I don’t know when to tell him,” I muttered, and rubbed the hole in the piece of wood with my thumb. The hole irritated me. I had wanted to craft a nice wooden bentcher holder, and now I’d have to start again from scratch. “Over the phone?” “I called home last night.” “First of all, there’s no rule saying you can’t call your parents every night. But you can also wait for Friday’s phone call, if you’d like.” “I do no such thing, a Friday phone call.” He took the piece of wood out of my hand, and as he studied my carvings, he asked, “What

I’d never heard him speak in this tone. “I promised you that I would tell them that I switched to your yeshivah, so I told them that I switched yeshivos. I just didn’t tell them exactly where this yeshivah is.” “What did you tell them?” He put a hand on my shoulder, apparently to avoid making it look like I was under police interrogation. “That I’m somewhere up north.” “Osher, I’m trying very hard not to get angry at you. A cup of water, please?” “No, thanks.” “I’m not offering; I’m asking for myself. And you did offer me a drink when I first came.” “There’s cold water in the fridge.” Ariella waved off the attempt to get her to do something. “And I still don’t get why you came. INGREDIENTS

1 lb. angel hair pasta or somen noodles, cooked according to package directions 1 onion, thinly sliced Oil, for sauteing 1 red pepper, thinly sliced ¼ tsp. salt 5 T. oil 5 T. soy sauce 5 T. seasoned rice vinegar 5 garlic cloves, crushed 4 T. sugar 2 T. sesame oil 1 tsp. sesame seeds 5 scallions, thinly sliced ¼ tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
DIRECTIONS 1. In a pan, saute the onion strips in oil for 5 minutes. 2. Add the sliced peppers and salt, and saute for an additional 15 minutes. 3. Add the vegetables to the cooked pasta along with the remaining ingredients, and stir to combine. Serve at any temperature.
ROASTED BROCCOLI This is the easiest “recipe” you will ever come across.
INGREDIENTS 24 oz. bag broccoli 2 T. olive oil 2 T. onion soup mix
DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 450°. 2. Place the broccoli in a baking sheet and toss it with the oil and onion soup mix. Bake until it’s caramelized, approximately 45 minutes.

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 450°. 2. Coat each wing lightly with cornstarch, then shake off the excess. 3. Place the wings on a baking sheet and spray them with oil spray. 4. Bake the wings until they’re golden and crispy, about 45 minutes to an hour 5. Meanwhile, prepare the sauce by placing all remaining ingredients besides the scallions in a saucepan and bringing it to a boil. 6. Remove from heat and toss the wings in the warm sauce. 7. Top with scallions and serve.

There’s a gentle rustle in the trees and birdsong in the air. Do you hear it? It’s the great outdoors singing praises to Hashem and calling your name. “Come,” it says. “Come soak up the sun-filled days and bask in the glory of His Creation.” For many people traveling up to the mountains, summer days mean hours spent outside, reveling in the freedom that comes with warm weather. But sometimes the weather can get too hot, with the sun beating down mercilessly upon the heads of those trying to schmooze with neighbors or just watch their kids play. A great way to make those times more tolerable is to have some form of shade, of course. And while a towering tree certainly provides beauty and refuge, there’s a manmade object that can do that as well — and increase your property value along with it. If you have the space for a gazebo on your porch or up in the country, it’s a great investment that will bring pleasure to friends and family and extend the hours spent outdoors, as well as your living space. Gazebos come in various shapes, sizes and materials. Here’s a breakdown:

METAL FRAME Pros: Metal-frame gazebos made of steel or aluminum are easily found in big box stores such as Lowe’s or Home Depot. They are generally easier on the pocket than more permanent structures and frequently come with accessories such as zip-up mosquito nets. They can be found in both hard-top versions made of all metal or with a softtop fabric covering.
Cons: These gazebos aren’t meant to last a lifetime. Most people get only a few years’ use out of them. Soft-tops aren’t meant to be left outside in inclement weather, either.
Price range: Gazebos with a soft top generally run in the $300 to $500 range. Prices typically run between $1,000 and $2,000 for allmetal gazebos. Prices for both can be more or less, depending on the brand, size and features.
Tip: The thickness of soft-top fabrics is measured in denier, marked with a “D.” A lower denier means a less sturdy fabric. A 150D fabric, for instance, isn’t nearly as strong as a 600D fabric.

POP-UP Pros: Pop-up gazebos take only minutes to assemble and are often very affordable. Smaller sizes can be used for camping and are more comfortable than tents because they offer room to stand.

If you choose to go that route, it’s a good idea to be able to articulate the look you’re aiming for — otherwise you might end up with an Asianstyle gazebo that clashes with your Victorian-style house… Here are some classic gazebo styles:
ROTUNDA This type of gazebo features a domed roof and pillars.

Add leaves or a whole plant into the container; use the same kind that you found the caterpillars or eggs on originally. Caterpillars are fussy eaters, and they might not eat anything else! Add some thin, upright sticks, so the caterpillars will find a place to hang from once they fold into their cocoons. Place the caterpillar habitat in a shady place. You may want to sprinkle some water on the plants to keep them moist if the weather turns hot and dry. Cover the habitat with cheesecloth or a pierced cover.

During this stage, all the caterpillar does is eat all day. It grows a lot and also stores some food for the next phase, when it will not do any eating. As its body grows, the exoskeleton, or outer skin, does not stretch along. Instead, it is shed in a process called molting, after which a new layer replaces it. A caterpillar can molt four or five times. The caterpillar stage can last from ten days to five weeks.

Have you ever not heard it? Well, you’re not alone either. It seems there are two types of people in this world: Those who embrace the idea of pets and those who shudder at the very mention of it. The chasm between these two camps is even more pronounced in the frum world than in the secular one, with parties from both sides baffled as to the mindset of the other. Some wonder why other communities are fine with the idea of treating animals almost as members of the family, while others recoil from the concept. Come summertime, though, the chasm gets just a bit narrower, with pets such as chicks and rabbits popping up around bungalow colonies, various Monsey neighborhoods, and, to a lesser extent, Brooklyn. But the question remains: Who’s correct in their leanings?
The community in which pets are generally accepted? Or the one in which they’re frowned upon? Come to find out, they’ve both got a kosher leg to stand upon. Let’s explore the topic. BEFORE WE BEGIN, let’s set some ground rules. 1. “Ewww!” is not objective. Neither is “Awww, so adorable!” Opinions are just that — personal feelings on a subject — and neither opinion is more valid than the other. 2. It’s facts that matter. We’re setting out to discover what the Torah has to say about owning animals. 3. I’m not a posek. I’m just a person seeking to understand
this facet of Yiddishkeit. If you’re thinking of buying a pet (or thinking of refusing to buy a pet, thereby quashing your kids’ dreams), don’t view this information with a black-and-white lens; consult your personal posek before ultimately making a decision.
For the sake of transparency, let me admit that prior to researching this topic I was almost at the point of buying a bunny — after all, my kids were asking for it, some neighbors had previously had rabbits, and, well... why not? But before I was willing to give a positive answer to the youngand-yearning, I figured we’d better learn what Yiddishkeit’s answer is to the pet dilemma. Doing so led our family to ultimately rule out the rabbit. A kosher little pygmy goat, on the other hand…

FIRST CONSIDERATIONS: HALACHA As Yidden, we know that halacha gives structure to everything we do. It defines the parameters of the permitted and the prohibited. So obviously, this is a fundamental place to start. I picked up a sefer called Pets in Halacha by Rabbi Chaim L. Belsky and got a basic understanding of the topic. To the best of my ability, I’ve compiled a list of the animals that I’ve learned are assur and muttar to own. Again, I’m not a posek, so please see his footnotes in the sefer for more information, and do consult your own rav if you decide you want to bring home a walrus or a wildebeest… or anything else, for that matter.
The Prohibited There are certain animals that halacha clearly says are forbidden to own. There are times, however, when it may be permissible to own even these animals, such as when someone requires a guard dog because they live in a particularly dangerous area; or one is given one of the following animals as a form of payment and needs to retain possession of it until the animal can be sold at fair market value. In such instances, one must ask a shailah regarding how to proceed.
The Permissible According to the letter of the law, the majority of other animals (according to most poskim) are permissible to own. There are many types of animals not included in this list, but this covers most of the commonly owned animals, as well as some of the exotic: MUTTAR TO OWN Domesticated cats (Hybrid cats are questionable as they are more dangerous; one must ask a shailah.) Reptiles (lizards, geckos, iguanas, turtles and the like) Amphibians (frogs, toads) Rodents (mice, gerbils, guinea pigs, hamsters and the like) Rabbits Fish Insects Birds (Whether birds may be kept inside the home is questionable; it may also be considered tzaar baalei hachaim, as it causes distress to birds to keep them caged.) Dogs (Most poskim hold that it is permissible to own a dog that neither barks nor bites, though some pasken that it is never permissible.) Monkeys Goats and sheep (outside of Eretz Yisroel, according to many authorities)
ASSUR TO OWN Pigs An aggressive dog that scares people, even if its bite is not dangerous. Lions, tigers, bears, leopards, wolves and poisonous snakes, because they can never be truly domesticated and are a constant threat to life. (Other wild animals aren’t specified.) Small grazing animals (goats and sheep) as they tend to graze in others’ fields. Some hold this only applies to individuals in Eretz Yisroel who live in inhabited areas; others suggest it may be applicable wherever there are Jewish-owned fields.

An Eye-Opening Halacha Two years ago I wrote a fictional story on bikkurim, which led to my learning a halacha that opened my eyes. Was my character allowed to bring his bikkurim on a horse or donkey? I asked. Would the animal make the bikkurim tamei? No, I was told. Living animals — even nonkosher ones — do not transmit tumah; it is only carcasses we worry about. Therefore, touching a nonkosher animal would not — despite common misconception — make a person tamei.
The Bottom Line Al pi halacha, it is permissible to own many types of animals — even nonkosher ones. The question, therefore, is not whether a Yid may own a nonkosher pet, but whether a Yid should own a nonkosher pet.
DIGGING DEEPER It’s important to realize that the relationship between man and animal has changed drastically as the centuries have rolled by. While animals were once primarily viewed as both a source of food and as working beings — such as through plowing, herding sheep, catching mice and pulling wagons — animals in this country are largely viewed as companions. To better understand the issue, it’s important to separate animals into the roles of either service animal or household pet. When this is done, it’s quite clear why a non-dangerous seeing-eye dog is permissible according to all authorities (that I’m aware of): the animal is serving in a working capacity. Therapy animals of other species may also fit the bill. But owning a nonkosher animal simply as a companion isn’t to be taken lightly. While not necessarily

assur, there are some weighty things to keep in consideration:
Distancing Ourselves From Undesirable Middos Up until Noach’s times, animals weren’t allowed to be eaten. According to several meforshim, we’re currently allowed to eat animals only because they owe a debt of gratitude to mankind since Noach saved them from the Mabul by bringing them aboard the teivah. But if they owe a debt of gratitude to mankind, why is a Yid limited in which type of animal he eats? Shouldn’t all of them be permissible? The Ramban in Parshas Shemini (11:13) tells us, “The reason for certain birds being forbidden as food is on account of their cruel nature. It is also possible that the reason for certain animals is similar, since no animal that chews the cud and has a split hoof is a beast of prey, while the rest all devour others.” We are taught that the animals with the finest middos are the ones Yidden are allowed to consume, because at the end of the day, the adage rings true: You are what you eat. A Yid is supposed to live his life with a focus on constantly refining his middos and distancing himself from cruelty and violent tendencies. And while actually ingesting predatory animals affects a person in a way absolutely forbidden by the Torah, this concept can be taken one step further: The behaviors you are exposed to become the behaviors you exhibit. Yes, nonkosher animals are often full of spunk and personality — and that’s probably what makes animals such as dogs so endearing to many people. They can be seen as cute, cuddly, entertaining, and extremely easy to adore. But there’s a fine line between being lively and being

Protecting the Neshamah Via the Eyes It is well known that the Lubavitcher Rebbe, zt”l, encouraged his chassidim to avoid giving their children toys of nonkosher animals. He spoke on this concept at length, expounding upon the importance of surrounding Jewish children with only holy and pure objects. He also cautioned that everything makes an impact on a child: “...a child is not just influenced by the food he eats and the liquid that he drinks, which would obviously be the case, since they become part of his flesh and blood. Everything that occurs around the child affects his soul, and this effect will become manifest in later years.”

The Kav Hayashar strengthens this concept, actually describing how impure animals can be detrimental to the neshamah: “... You should know that every sin has a cause that brings one to it indirectly... “...It is true that one has permission to see unusual creatures brought from distant countries, and for this our sages established the blessing, ‘Blessed is the One Who makes unusual creatures.’ Nevertheless, one should not satisfy his eyes by gazing at them, and should look at them only in a cursory manner. For one’s eyesight perceives via four colors that correspond to the Divine Name of Havayah, and if the person sees impure creatures, he elicits a spirit of impurity, which hovers over him in this

From Furry Friend to Dog with a Job In an isolated incident in Montreal — where extreme curfews were imposed for a rather long time — a clever chassid borrowed his neighbor’s pet to prove a potent point. Over there, people were only allowed to leave their homes for reasons the government deemed essential, such as seeking medical care, procuring food… or, walking one’s dog. While two-leggers weren’t allowed out for a stroll alone, they were permitted to leave their personal premises while under the escort of Israel Summer So, 2021in - Itinerary a canine. a brilliant move, this chassid transformed his neighbor’s pet dog into a service animal by using it as an excuse to get out and about and proclaim the ludicracy of the local law. While the Rebbe showed concern for the animal and the halacha (not to eat before one’s animal has eaten), he didn’t want to have familiarity with it in any manner. If you park your car near the tennis court, you can just walk around the service gate and into the Reservation. The two listed below require a bit more walking: • Cedar Grove Community Center at 199 Fairview Avenue in Cedar Grove. Cross Fairview Avenue at the crosswalk, walk through Cedar Grove Park, and then uphill into the Reservation on the main driveway.
Hilltop Reservation is a peaceful nature preserve whose meadow is home to many butterfly-attracting wildflowers, most notably milkweed and bee balm, which attract monarch butterflies. There are short trails crossing this preserved ridgeline of the Second Watchung Mountain to enjoy while butterfly watching.

Organizing the Time You can adjust this timetable to your personal schedule. Total prep/cooking time: 1 hour and 40 minutes
The night before:
green beans up to boil.
Remove the soup and chicken (if frozen) from the freezer, and place in the fridge to thaw.
Mix the breadcrumbs and spices in a pan.
5:10 p.m. Peel and dice onions and garlic for the chicken.
Add green beans to boiling water and lower flame. Place breadcrumbs into the oven.
6:10 p.m.
Clean the chicken bottoms.
Remove green beans from heat and drain. Remove breadcrumbs from the oven and mix with green beans. Move the green beans to the pan, lower the oven temperature to 200°, and place green beans into the oven.
Rub the spices in, and place half of chicken in the pot and half in the freezer Peel and quarter the potatoes and put them into the pot. Put chicken and potatoes up to cook.
5:40 p.m. Prepare the drink and place it in the fridge. Set the table.

Rinse the 2-quart pot, and add thawed soup. Place over a high flame and bring to a boil. Reduce flame to lowmedium and let soup cook.
2. (A pair of rubber gloves may be helpful for this step!) Clean the chicken bottoms. Combine the paprika, black pepper, oil and water and rub it into the chicken.

4. Peel and quarter potatoes and sweet potatoes. Add them to the pot. Sprinkle with salt, oil, water and paprika.
Remove soup from heat. Remove chicken from heat. Supper is ready to be served!

This week’s dinner is a basic. It’s perfect for those days when you want to serve a nourishing Hungarian-style meal: good old-fashioned paprikash, string beans with bread crumbs, and yes, frozen soup, because a stocked freezer is a very balabustishe art!
3. Place half of the onion, garlic and chicken into a 10-inch cooking pan and freeze the other half for later use.
5. Turn the flame to medium, and cook for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of water, if necessary. To use frozen chicken: Defrost fully. Add potatoes and the rest of the ingredients, and cook as per above instructions.

FRUITY CREAM DRINK Soft-colored and refreshing, this drink makes a delicious, light dessert. All-natural jello provides great flavor, but the standard one results in a pinker color.
INGREDIENTS 2 1 ½ 3
cups orange-mango juice cup water cup topping T. raspberry or strawberry jello
DIRECTIONS 1. Place water (at room temperature) into a container. 2. Dissolve jello in it, mixing with a fork until the lumps are smooth.
STRING BEANS WITH BREADCRUMBS Old-fashioned as ever, you’ll want this classic in your repertoire!
INGREDIENTS 1 lb. (fresh or frozen) string beans 1½ cups of water ½ cup breadcrumbs 4 tsp. oil ¾ tsp. salt Dash of white pepper ½ tsp. sugar, optional
DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350°. 2. Place a two-quart pot with the water over medium heat. When it comes to a boil, add the green beans and cook for approximately 10 minutes. Drain the water. 3. Place the rest of the ingredients into a disposable pan. Toast it in the oven for 10 minutes. 4. Remove the pan and mix with the cooked green beans.

Although it’s affectionately known to locals as “18th Avenue Park,” its official name, Gravesend Park, has somewhat unclear origins. NYC Department of Parks reports three possibilities: One that it was named for its proximity to Washington Cemetery, which puts it literally at “graves’ end.” Another possible reason is that the site was named for the neighborhood of Gravesend (a map dating 1850 indicates that this parcel of land was within the Gravesend town line at that point). And a third option is that it was named for Gravesend Avenue, which was how McDonald Avenue was called until 1933.
Between 1896 and 1916, this parcel of land was used for a disciplinary training school, which was opened to address the problem of troubled children who needed to be disciplined for minor offenses. Inmates’ reports mention “wayward youth” or “ungovernable” children, some as young as twelve years of age. They were sent for discipline sometimes after an arrest, and sometimes because their parents sent them after misdemeanors like “maliciously and willfully breaking windows and smashing doors,” pickpocketing, and “keeping company with vicious persons.”
The park was named for President William McKinely who was assassinated while in office in 1901.
In 1994, a fire destroyed the parkhouse, and community members raised $5,000 for the restoration of the structure.
Mayor Giuliani held his first town hall meeting in the McKinley Park in 1994.

PROSPECT PARK Size: 526 acres | Opened in: 1867 This expansive park is as rich in history as it is in nature and architectural beauty.
During the Revolutionary War, the Battle of Brooklyn (also known as the Battle of Long Island and the Battle of Brooklyn Heights) took place right on that site on August 27, 1776. Though it was a battle lost by George Washington and the Continental Army, it held back the British long enough for Washington and his army to escape to Manhattan. It was actually the historical significance of this site that led to the establishment of a large park. It started with a reservoir on Prospect Hill and the preservation of the Battle Pass in 1856.
It is expansive, but Prospect Park is actually not the largest park in Brooklyn. That designation goes to Marine Park, which, at 530 acres, tops Prospect Park by 4 acres. Prospect Park is home to Brooklyn’s only forest, and the entire forest area, known as the Ravine, tops 100 acres. (There’s a reason Brooklyn has the designation as the “leastforested borough” in New York.)
The intricate watercourse f lowing through the park, including Prospect Park Lake, is entirely manmade.
SUNSET PARK Size: 24.5 acres | Purchased by the city for parkland: 1891 While you may think the name is borrowed from the neighborhood in which this park is located — Sunset Park — it was in fact the other way around. The park was named Sunset Park right at the beginning, obviously for its glorious views. The Eagle wrote about it as “one of the finest views in the city” in 1892, and The New York Times praised the “magnificent views of earth and sky and water” in 1894. It was only in 1960, when realtors thought it would help their sales in the area, that the neighborhood was named after the park.
Until 1935, the park included a pond, golf course and carousel! From Sunset Park’s highest point, visitors can enjoy views of the Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty, the green hills of Staten Island and New Jersey, and… the sunset, of course!
Later developments of the park were funded by Roosevelt’s post-Depression work programs that provided Americans with jobs.
