(Re: A Walk Through My Workplace, Issue 88) Your feature about the run-of-the-mill workers around our community, who are not run-of-the-mill at all, left me inspired. Such positivity and human goodness was unveiled in these profiles. I was so touched by the cashier’s words. What beautiful hashkafos she shared. What a positive human being! The goodness was just spilling out between the lines. It made me so proud to be part of a community where the people running its operations are just so wonderful. S.H.

(Re: FYI, Issue 88) I enjoyed reading the fun and informative facts on workplace productivity. It was a great mix of information that breathed some life into my workday! It was interesting to read that only 16% of workplaces provide snacks for employees, and it made me feel blessed to be among this lucky minority who gets to munch on the job. These little (not-solittle) things really make a big difference. Employers, a pleasant work environment really is motivating and will definitely increase your employees’ productivity. The boy took the reinish and exquestion Klal Yisroel: What kind of mitzvah is changed it for one hundred small this? What’s the reason behind it? Therefore, the coins, which he delivered to his rebbi at home. Then he found a Torah writes that it is a “chok” — it’s a decree from beggar who would play along with his ploy. The beggar retraced his steps one hundred times. Every time he IN THE TOWN of Horodenka in Galicia lived a poor melamed, Reb Chaim of Chernowitz, who would later be the author of the knocked, Reb Chaim answered patiently and dropped another Be’er Mayim Chaim. How could he have been so cruel?! With his “innocent” mischief, he standably, money was tight in Reb Chaim’s home. One day, as they were learning Chumash, Reb Chaim taught had taken his rebbi’s entire salary! The boy ran home sobbing and told his father what he had the pasuk, “Nason titein lo” (Re’eh 15:10), which discusses the mitzvah of tzedakah. Rashi comments on the repetitive language, done. The father took his son by the hand and led him to his explaining that one must give to a pauper over and over again rebbi’s home to apologize. But Reb Chaim didn’t understand. “Why are you asking — even one hundred times. “Do you understand what this means?” Reb Chaim asked forgiveness? no nisayon. We are to keep every mitzvah just because our King said so — regardless if we understand the reason. That is the way a royal command is followed: with blind faith. * * * * * Indeed, we don’t expect the umos ha’olam to accept the response that the parah adumah is merely a “chok.” It isn’t possible for a gentile to understand this. However, the answer that Rashi gives is not intended for the ears of the nations; it is directed to us — Klal Yisroel! Naturally, every person wants to find favor in his surroundings and is influenced by those around him. No one wants to be perceived as strange. So when the Satan and the nations of the world would question the reasoning of the parah adumah, it could, chas v’shalom, raise questions in the hearts of Yidden as well. Thus, the Torah combatted this threat by stressing that this mitzvah is a “chok” and that we shouldn’t get carried away by the questions of the gentiles. Rather, we are to follow the ways of our King unquestioningly, even when it is challenging.
Did You Know? The petirah of Miriam immediately follows the mitzvah of the parah adumah. This teaches us that just as a korban serves as an atonement, so too, when a tzaddik passes away, it brings kapparah for Klal Yisroel.
* * * * * With Miriam’s passing in this week’s parsha, the water that Klal Yisroel had in her zechus ceased to flow. Where is the be’er shel Miriam today? Chazal say it is in the waters of Teveria, and every Motzei Shabbos, it circles around to all wellsprings. As such, the Shulchan Aruch Harav teaches that it is a segulah to draw water from a well and drink it on Motzei Shabbos.

This past weekend, as early voting began for the mayoral primary in New York City, at least two men were killed and eighteen people were wounded in shootings. In the past year, the city has suffered from a 200% increase in gun violence, with no end in sight, police said. While other New Yorkers might point to the high cost of living, homelessness, or “a need for major police reform” as the issues that are most important to them, Orthodox Jewish communities regularly rank public safety as their number-one concern. As shootings continue to skyrocket, Mayor de Blasio continuously reiterates his beliefs that “improving relations between the police and the community,” “bringing in more mental health professionals,” and “the end of the pandemic” — despite New York City’s almost negligible 0.35% COVID-19 positivity rate on Sunday— is what he “can feel” will end the crime surge. Clearly, New York City needs a fresh dose of new ideas to drive down the worst gun violence the city has seen in a decade. While all the mayoral candidates claim they will provide public safety, few provide specifics plans besides some far-left-leaning ideas that sound laughable, such as appointing a civilian police commissioner, taking guns away from the police force, generally disempowering the police, and of course, defunding the police. Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, a longtime supporter of Shomrim who is viewed as the toughest candidate on crime, has long eschewed progressive approaches to improving the NYPD while remaining sensitive to police brutality, from which he unfortunately suffered when he was fifteen years old. In contrast to the vague and ill-informed “ideas” of the other candidates, Adams, who is a 22-year veteran of the NYPD, has solid and specific
plans, such as bringing back the anti-crime unit that Mayor Bill de Blasio inexplicably disbanded last summer and turning it into an “anti-gun unit.” Unlike the current administration, which seems to spend money as quickly as it receives it, Adams makes an impression of frugality and financial restraint. When I asked Adams whether the $1 billion that Mayor de Blasio redirected away from the NYPD last summer would come in handy to better fight crime, surprisingly, Adams said no. The NYPD has enough money, explained Adams, who also has represented Brooklyn as a state senator, but that money is just terribly mismanaged. Adams said that he would staff the anti-gun unit not by spending more money to hire additional police officers, but by reassigning to the streets police officers who are currently wasting their training at desk jobs that could be done by civilians. This is but one example of Adams’ intimate familiarity with the NYPD, an attribute no other mayoral candidate can even pretend to claim. Zeroing in on gang violence and putting a greater focus on the

prevention of crime by bolstering education and the diagnostics of learning disabilities and dyslexia, which are common among criminals, are other specific strategies that are unique to Adams’ vision for a safer New York City. “Fifty-five percent of people in jail have learning disabilities, and eighty percent don’t have high school diplomas or equivalency diplomas,” Adams has said. “So, the crimes are not only about what [incarcerated people] did; they are what we’re doing every day in our school system.” Throughout his life, Adams has not only been thinking carefully about what works and what does not work in controlling crime; he draws from decades of putting his life on the line to protect New Yorkers on the streets and on the subways. For instance, despite pleas from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, reporters and New Yorkers, the mayor could not be persuaded to increase the uniformed police presence on the subways amid a spate of slashings and shovings. Adams, in contrast, has been on those subways as a uniformed cop protecting New Yorkers both while on and off duty. At the third debate last Wednesday, while most of the candidates merely bemoaned the subway when it was called a “rolling crime scene” in the 1970s, Adams nodded and said he vividly remembered “riding the train from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. during those times.” He recalled a particularly bad night when a woman on the train was swinging a knife wildly. “I had to make a decision. Do I draw my firearm with other passengers in this car, or do I take action?” Adams remembered asking himself in that split second he had to think. “I had to wrestle the knife away from her.” Not only does Adams have in his arsenal many specific, practical ideas for combating crime, which he expresses calmly and confidently, he is also a long-established friend who understands the needs and priorities of our community. While Orthodox Jewish New Yorkers are always wary of elected officials’ attitudes toward yeshivah education, in February, Adams told this reporter that he believed that “educational models should not be one-size-fit-all. “Children have a right to receive the best education, and not all communities, and not all parents, take the same approach,” Adams said. “We want to get the best outcomes for students and not rely on heavy-handed investigations that lead to distrust.” In addition, after a federal judge ordered an injunction that permanently ended Governor Andrew
Cuomo’s pandemic-related capacity limits for houses of worship in February, Adams said, “My hope is that this [ruling] is a stepping-stone for a broader appreciation of religious rights and freedoms,” and that “the New York City I envision as mayor will always recognize religion as a fundamental right, protected from politics.” In the fall, when Boro Park was bombarded with unfair ticketing of local businesses, Adams was so moved after speaking with business owners on 13th Avenue that he announced that if he is elected mayor, he would create a new initiative to help small business owners who were ticketed during COVID-19. Mr. Adams also said that he would rescind any tickets that were issued during that time. As the Brooklyn borough president and a former state senator, his long-term friendship with the Orthodox Jewish community goes back 23 years, which is why Adams received so many endorsements from Jewish communities in Boro Park, Flatbush, Staten Island, Long Island, Far Rockaway, Williamsburg and Crown Heights. “Jewish New Yorkers are not my new friends; we are old friends and long-time neighbors, who understand each other,” Mr. Adams said last week when the Satmar community in Williamsburg endorsed him for mayor. “He has celebrated with us in good times and mourned with us in bad times. His friendship has earned our loyalty and support,” Rabbi Yaacov Behrman, one of the endorsers from Crown Heights, said. “Adams has a proven track record in this city: a real record of a commitment to public safety and rooting out anti-Semitism wherever it rears its ugly head,” said Mr. Richard Altabe, founder of the Far Rockaway Jewish Alliance. In fact, Rabbi Moishe Indig said last week that Mr. Adams has shown himself to be “the first to respond to every anti-Semitic hate crime for decades in every Orthodox Jewish community in New York City. “This is why he is the right guy. He is a friend.” “We have hakaras hatov,” said the document that was signed by every single askan in Satmar Williamsburg. “We have to be united in our support for him, and ensure the most votes for Eric Adams.” “In one year, we can see a different city,” said Mr. Adams, who speaks warmly and quietly. “These few days, however, will determine New York City’s future for the next four years. It is time to vote. “Throughout the years, I have stood together with the Jewish community on so many issues, which we will continue to do, as we will face the future together.”
“Jewish New Yorkers are not my new friends; we we are old friends and long-time neighbors.”

CHAPTER 12 RECAP: Yechini deciphers the message on the parchment, which speaks of Shabbesai Tzvi’s glorious destiny. Celebrations and feasts follow. After the flagrant transgression of reciting the Shem Hameforesh, Shabbesai Tzvi gets ready to reveal to the assembled a vision from his youth.
“I
t was the night of Tishah B’Av. The rabbi read Eicha in such a heartbroken voice that all the people in the shul were overcome with loud, uncontrollable weeping. I, too, wept for the people slaughtered like animals while Yerushalayim was in flames. I, too, wept for the rivers of blood that ran through its holy streets. “Late at night, I fell into an exhausted sleep. I dreamed I stood on the slope of a mountain of snow. The sky was covered with clouds. I held a mirror in my hand. A deerskin was slung over my shoulder. I grew larger and larger until I was as tall as the trees. A voice called to me from the north. ‘My son, my son, look at what I am about to show you.’ “I looked into the mirror in my hand and saw only my fleshless bones. I covered my bones with the deerskin I was carrying and wore it in place of my own skin. Just then, the sun came out, bright and scorching, from behind the clouds. The mountain of snow melted and became a river that flowed to the four corners of the world. “I found myself standing at the foot of a mountain of raven-black soil. I looked up and saw a huge foot resting

on the mountaintop. Another huge foot rested on a mountain the color of blood. I looked up higher and saw that both feet belonged to a giant who held a red banner in his right hand, a royal scepter in his left. A single horn grew from his forehead. “I was seized by a great terror, and a cloud lifted me away and placed me in a valley. There I met a beggarly man who carried a small volume in his hands. “‘What is your name?’ I asked. ‘And from where do you come?’ “‘My name is Malachi,’ he replied, ‘and I come from earlier generations.’ “‘And where are you going?’ I asked. “‘I am going to the end of days.’ “‘What do you do?’ “‘I’m a physician.’ “‘And what is your medicine?’ I asked. “‘I carry the last medicine,’ he replied. ‘The medicine that cures death. Beware, my son, not to look behind you, because you will be turned into a pillar of salt.’ “Then the man led me to the mouth of a cave. He took his small volume and touched it to my eyes and ears. A brilliant light shone into me, and I could not see or hear for a long time. When
my sight and hearing returned, the man was gone. I went into the cave to rest. A silk-covered couch had been prepared for me. As I lay down on the couch, pigeons, doves and many other animals passed before me. “‘Long live our master, the king!’ they cried. ‘May he live forever.’ “Then they all bowed down. I raised my hands to bless them, but before I could utter a word, they all vanished. An angel took their place. “‘I have shown you wonderful things,’ said the angel. ‘Think into them, and you will find the meanings. Just this I will tell you: The mountain of snow is Mount Sinai. The black mountain is Edom. The deerskin is Eretz Yisroel. The mirror is the Torah.’ “The angel stopped speaking. “‘Please, my lord,’ I said. ‘Let your servant hear more of these words.’ “‘I can tell you no more.’ “As soon as the angel said these words, I awoke from my sleep. I have thought about my vision for many years, and now, I begin to find the meaning. Rejoice, my precious children, because the mysteries begin to unfold, like the petals of a budding flower. Mukian, a song!” Many versions of Shabbesai Tzvi’s vision circulated through Constantinople the following day. In addition, reports of his forbidden acts before relating the vision, uttering the Shem Hameforash and reciting the blessings over tallis and tefillin at night, reached the ears of some of the rabbis. They
lodged angry protests with him and spoke out against his actions to their congregations, but other than that, they took no measures against him. After a while, Shabbesai Tzvi’s euphoria over the discovery of the manuscript wore off. Doubts crept into his mind. He spent days poring over the manuscript. Once again, he sensed the forces of darkness rising up from their dens in the netherworld to do battle with him. He withdrew into almost total seclusion, emerging only to immerse himself before dawn in the waters of the Bosporus. Several times, he called Yechini and questioned him in detail about the manuscript, but Yechini claimed to be completely baffled. One night, a messenger summoned Yechiel to Shabbesai Tzvi’s lodgings. When Yechiel arrived, Gamliel was already there, as were Mukian the Macedonian and several other disciples of long standing. Gamliel and Yechiel exchanged puzzled glances, but before they could speak to each other, the door opened. Yechini stepped out from the short hallway leading to the inner chamber. “Welcome, my friends,” he said. “I’m glad to see you could all come. The Master will be delighted. I must tell you that he is weak from fasting. Come, the Master awaits you.” He spun on his heel and headed along the hallway to the inner chamber. The others scrambled to their feet and hurried after him. The curtains of the inner chamber were drawn, but numerous candles glowed with ghostly incandescence. Black shadows danced across the walls. Shabbesai Tzvi sat at a table, pale and drawn, his hand resting on the pages of an open Zohar. A full glass of tea stood on the table. It looked cold. A row of empty chairs waited patiently on the other side of the table. “Come in, my precious children,” said Shabbesai Tzvi. “The sight of your dear faces brings gladness to my heart. May the Almighty bless you and watch over you always.” One after the other, Shabbesai Tzvi’s disciples kissed his hand and took their seats, their eyes fixed hungrily on his luminous face. “Gamliel, let’s begin with you,” said Shabbesai Tzvi. “How is your family in Yerushalayim?” “Thank the Almighty, they’re all fine,” replied Gamliel. “I have done well in Poland this year, and my family benefits from it as well. My daughter Shulamit is nearly fifteen years old, and my wife writes that many offers of marriage are awaiting me when I return.” Shabbesai Tzvi pulled thoughtfully at his beard for a moment or two. “Turn them all down, Gamliel,” he said. “Accept no marriage offers until after the first Chanukah of her seventeenth year. Her preordained groom will not appear before then. Write to me when you think you’ve found the right one. Do not forget to do so.” “Yes, Master,” said Gamliel. “I shall be forever grateful. But does this mean that we must wait two more years for the Master to fulfill his destiny?” “You must be patient, Gamliel. Whatever the future holds will take time and a great deal of preparation. It will not happen tomorrow.” Shabbesai Tzvi turned his gaze to Yechiel Tomashov. “Yechiel, my precious child, from this day forward you are to call yourself Yechiel Hapolani, Yechiel from Poland. Even when you visit your family in Warsaw you are no longer to use the name Tomashov. Do you understand?” Yechiel hesitated for only a fraction of a second. “Of course, Master,” he stam-

“My precious children,” he said at last. “The time has come for you to return to your homes and families. You’ve all been away for a long time.” mered. “Good, what do you hear from your home? How is little Netzach?” Yechiel beamed. “Everything is going well at home. Netzach is wonderful. My wife wrote that he already speaks Yiddish, Ladino and Turkish.” “He’s a bright boy with a bright future. When will he be three years old?” “Next summer. In early Tammuz.” “Listen, Yechiel,” said Shabbesai Tzvi. “When you return home, I want you to tell your wife about your bond with me. You need to conceal nothing at all. She will understand. Next Lag Ba’omer, you are to travel together with your wife and son to the village of Meron in the Holy Land, to the gravesite of our great teacher Rabi Shimon bar Yochai. In the morning, after you pray, you are to cut little Netzach’s long hair, but do not let the scissors touch even one hair of his peyos.” He picked up the Zohar and brought it to his lips. “If you do as I say, then the merit of Rabi Shimon and the Kabbalah he has taught us will always protect your son.” For the next quarter-hour, Shabbesai Tzvi inquired about each of his disciples’ personal lives and gave them advice and instructions. “My precious children,” he said at last. “The time has come for you to return to your homes and families. You’ve all been away for a long time.” The young men sat with bowed heads, not daring to look at the face of their Master. “I think I speak for all of us when I say this,” said Gamliel at last. “How can we leave when the Master is beginning to reveal his power to the world?” “Listen carefully, my precious children,” said Shabbesai Tzvi. “The time has not yet come for me to redeem our people from exile. For more than a week, I battled the forces of darkness, and I prevailed. Last night, I rose up to the fifth heaven and four angels surrounded me. They cradled me in their wings and sang to me. A dazzling light was kindled in my soul, a light that

pierced the veils beyond which the future lies. I looked down a long corridor of black marble, and at its end, in a vast chamber with walls of woven sunbeams, I saw the Third Beis Hamikdash in all its fiery magnificence. I asked an angel how long the corridor was. He would only say that it was more than five years long. “Five years, my children. Five years. Who knows? Perhaps it will be longer. During this time the way must be prepared, and each of you must return to his home and do his part. It will be a difficult time. A time of sacrifice and hard work. Do not think our success is assured. The forces of darkness are already preparing for the final battle. Ashmedai, King of the Demons, rises from his steaming den in the bowels of the earth to join forces with the kelipah. If we let down our guard, all will be lost. “It is here in Constantinople that the main battle will be fought. The kelipah is very strong in Constantinople. I must battle hard for every one of the nitzotzos, the sparks of holiness, that I wrest from its grip. This is the capital of the most powerful empire on the face of the earth, and this is where the redemption will begin.” Shabbesai Tzvi sighed. “I shall remain here for a while, but I am not yet strong enough for Constantinople. Before long, I shall leave and go elsewhere. Yet, someday I shall return to take the crown from the sultan’s head and place it on my own. You shall all be here with me on that day. “But until then, my precious children, you must return to your homes. I want you to repent every single day without fail, and I want you to fast every Monday and Thursday. You are my soldiers. I shall always know where you are, and I will summon you to my side if I need you. Distance will not separate us. May the Almighty always watch over you and shine His Divine light upon you and your families.” To be continued…

Early Voting Underway in NYC With this year’s mayoral primary turning out to be a very contentious race, city residents have already begun flocking to the polls, taking advantage of early voting to cast their ballots in advance of the June 22nd election. NY1 reported that early voting opened on June 12, and over 32,000 New Yorkers voted last weekend, with candidates for mayor, city comptroller and public advocate all vying to make their way onto the Democratic ballot in November. The election is the city’s first ranked-choice election, with voters having the ability to list their first, second, third, fourth and even fifth choices in each race. Also facing off on June 22 are Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa and businessman and activist Fernando Mateo, who are vying for the Republican mayoral nomination. Askanim urge all residents to go out and cast their vote, regardless of who their candidates of choice are. Since politicians study voter turnout, the greatest beneficiaries of robust community representation at the polls is the community itself.
City to Honor COVID-19 Health Care Heroes and Essential Workers With Ticker Tape Parade Fulfilling a promise he made last year that the return of major events in New York City will be marked by a ticker tape parade honoring health care heroes and essential workers, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that the longawaited celebration would be taking place in Manhattan’s Canyon of Heroes on Wednesday, July 7. The parade will celebrate individuals the mayor described as unsung heroes, who kept the city operational during the worst of the pandemic and played a role in its continued return to relative normalcy — health care workers, first responders, educators, municipal workers, transportation workers, de-

livery people, and grocery store and bodega workers, among others. “We’re always going to remember the pain and the tragedy of COVID,” said de Blasio. “No one is going to ever forget those we lost and what families are still going through. But we need a day to celebrate the heroism of everyday New Yorkers.” The mayor noted that vaccinations have been the key to the city’s emergence from COVID-19 and urged everyone to roll up their sleeves and get immunized. “This year we’ve been through, it has literally been the greatest crisis in the history of New York City,” said de Blasio. “We were knocked down, but we got back up and that’s something to celebrate about this city.”
Jewish Community Cries Foul Over Cuomo’s Vaccination Data It was another gubernatorial press conference replete with charts and statistics, this one showing which zip codes in the state had the lowest vaccination rates, and once again casting New York’s Jewish communities in an unflattering light. VIN News reported that even as Governor Andrew Cuomo vowed to eliminate nearly all COVID-19 restrictions once 70% of adult New Yorkers had received their first vaccine, he shared data that showed vaccination rates among adults and children, with Monsey leading the state with the fewest people immunized. Also making the top ten were Monroe, Spring Valley, Far Rockaway and Williamsburg, with Crown Heights, Boro Park and Marine Park all listed among the zip codes with the lowest vaccination rates. With children under twelve ineligible for the vaccine, and

those twelve through fifteen only recently being approved, it comes as no surprise that with their significantly largerthan-average number of children, Orthodox Jewish communities have lower vaccination rates when both adults and children are being counted. Immunization data from the New York City Department of Health showed that vaccine rates in those same zip codes were considerably higher when they included only adults and no children. Speaking at a mayoral press conference two days after the Cuomo press conference, NYC Health + Hospitals president and CEO Dr. Mitchell Katz categorized the governor’s presentation of the data as misleading. “Doing vaccination as a percentage of the population is deceptive in any part of the city where the number of children is much larger,” said Dr. Katz, adding, “We can certainly give that feedback to the state, that focusing on the group that are adults and then separately looking at the younger people for whom there was just a recent approval, makes sense to me.” Having the data presented as it was did not sit well with OJPAC founder Yossi Gestetner. “When it comes to public discourse in the age of social media, it is important for data to be accurate to make sure that government resources are properly directed and to cut back the chance that the numbers are not abused by agitators,” observed Gestetner.

A bill that will expedite timely burials is one step closer to becoming the law in New York and is making its way to Governor Andrew Cuomo’s desk where it awaits his signature. The Electronic Signatures and Records Act will drop the requirement for handwritten signatures on burial permits and other cemetery services and allow digital signatures instead. Digital signatures were already legally binding for death certificates in New York, but the requirement for handwritten signatures on other elements of funeral and cemetery arrangements often introduced time delays, particularly during COVID-19. The ESRA, which was passed by both the Assembly and the State Senate, was introduced by Representatives John McDonald III and Judy Griffin in the Assembly and by Senator Diane Savino and co-sponsors Senators Simcha Felder, Mike Martucci, Mario Mattera and Thomas O’Mara in the state Senate. Felder heralded the passage of the bill, noting that bereaved family members would be freed from bureaucratic red tape during a particularly difficult time in their lives. He categorized the legislation as “the upgrading of an antiquated process.” “Once again, we see the use of technology in a most unusual way to comfort and help someone at their most trying time,” added Misaskim CEO and founder Rabbi Yanky Meyer. “The amount of grief this will spare a family is unimaginable.”

hether it’s day camp, overnight camp or just lounging around in the country, we’re happily in vacation mode! Freeze pops dripping everywhere. Little knees full of scrapes and mud. Lazy suppers and last-minute laundry.
And yet, lurking under the surface is the more unpleasant side of summer life; With paper-thin walls, doors that are open more than closed and lawns triumphing over cramped kitchen tables for dinner, it’s inevitable that the neighbours see and hear more than we’d care to know:
Friday calls from older ones in camp regale you with tales of hair-raising color-war breakouts, the most a-m-a-z-i-n-g trip, and nosh supplies running low (and please send some more...).
Moishy’s gorgeous voice on Shabbos afternoon. Yanky chazer’ing mishnayos long into the afternoon. Capable and responsible Esty looking after all the little ones. Your husband bringing back all those goodies from the city.
And then there’s the adults. Lounging around under shady trees, there’s nothing like escaping the sticky hot city streets and letting go of routine to make it feel like vacation. Hours catching up with old friends, debating the merits of Tide or Shout (or getting into an anti/pro vaccine argument...), finally finishing that diamond art you started last summer...
And often, there’s also that ever-present niggling voice of worry: What didn’t your far-away camper tell you? What type is this new friend? Is he getting along with his chavrusa? Is she drinking enough? Is that cough really gone, or should it be checked out again? You’re miles away and apart from davening, there’s not much you feel you can do to help them.
So, summer! It’s a time of adventure and fun but also more hazards and risks. Of honing talents and displaying strengths, but also more public exposure. Of warm camaraderie and special memories, but perhaps also more competition and opportunities for envy.
What can we do to make sure we all come home with only positive baggage?
SO, SUMMER! IT’S A TIME OF ADVENTURE AND FUN BUT ALSO MORE HAZARDS AND RISKS. OF HONING TALENTS AND DISPLAYING STRENGTHS, BUT ALSO MORE PUBLIC EXPOSURE.
It’s hard to keep things private and discreet, and we can’t change what everyone else is thinking, saying or doing. However , we can work on being open-hearted and generous. We can practice fargining others their nachas and enjoying the sight and sounds of their beautiful family and their lively (ok, let’s admit it – noisy) interactions. ‘’Cheering for the other team’’ can be more than a nice camp motto – it can become our - and our whole family’s - gut reaction to someone else’s success and happiness.
that keeps giving, and the gift that boomerangs right back to us and our lives. Where there’s tolerance, and positivity, appreciation and fargin’ing, it’s hard to be the one with the sour begrudging attitude. Kamayim panim el panim. That neighbour who’s lawn your son just shpritzed, that mother whose daughter desperately wanted your daughter’s part in the play, that summer friend who’s husband is just not so handy and geshikt as yours – will find it hard to feel resentment and envy in the face of an attitude that’s so gracious and open-hearted.
And that’s the true secret to a happy and peaceful summer. Like the ubiquitous sunscreen spray in your pocket book and that extra phone charger stashed in the glove compartment, our Eyin Tovah will accompany us wherever we travel as our spiritual tools to keep us on the safe side. And when you know you’ve done your best, you are free to let go of that anxiety quietly nagging you all summer long. You can stop worrying about what they’re all up-to, how the kids are doing and what you should be doing better etc, etc. You are free to truly enjoy your well-deserved summer break, knowing that beseyata dishmaya, you and your family have the paths cleared for a peaceful and relaxing summer.
Tamuz and Av are Chodshei Ha’eneyim – the months that represent our eyes (B’nei Yissaschar). When we make a decision to view things in a positive light, we are giving these eyes - these months - so much positive power. צאתכם ובואכם לחיים ולשלום We’re giving our friends, neighbours and family ------------a tremendous gift; Our acceptance. CHAPTER TWELVE RECAP: Ariella
wants to get away for a while. In the meantime, Rabbi Reiness calls Osher’s parents to let them know where their son is. Yeruchem, a young boy from Rabbi Reiness’s yeshivah, is taken away by welfare services, much to Rabbi Reiness’ — and Osher’s — sadness.
Osher

opened my drawer and took out a colorful set of linen, the one with the patchwork of squares. Nechemiah sat on a chair near the bed and drank the tea I’d made for him. He watched me stretch the sheet over Yeruchem’s mattress and wave the thick blanket in the air. “So that it should be soft and fluffy and full of air,” I explained as I did it again. I remembered my father waving our blankets in the air when he put on our linen. I can never do it as well, but I’m getting there. “I thought the only way to do it is by banging the blankets,” he said, eyes closed. I folded back the blanket. “Here you go — make yourself at home.” He laughed at my joke, but his laugh was hoarse, clearly the laugh of someone feeling ill. He got up, unsteady on his feet, and then slowly walked toward the bed. He just about fell into it. “Do you want some Tylenol?” I asked. “Yes, thanks. I think there’s some in the kitchen cabinet, right side on the top.” “I also have Tylenol.” I didn’t want to open the door to the Reiness’ family quarters. “Take some of mine for now, and feel better.” “Thanks.” His hand shook as he took the pills from me. “I’m like that,” he said, his eyes still closed. “A little fever puts me away. Maybe it’s because I’m spoiled.” He sighed deeply and then pulled the cover up to his chin. “And the fact that I’m almost twenty-one does not change the fact that I’m the youngest at home. What can I do? It seems to have an effect.”

I didn’t really know what to answer to his very personal remarks. Maybe that’s why I was happy when the doorbell rang. I hoped it was Nechemiah’s mother, who would quickly clear his bed in the house so he could move into his room instead of saying all these strange things that I didn’t really have the right answers for. Only after I went over to the door to open it did I remember that his mother would not wait for someone to answer the door; it was her place, and she would let herself in. And after I saw who was standing there, I regretted opening the door in the first place. “Hello, there!” the Arab said with a huge, toothy grin. He had on a floral shirt in shades of maroon, orange and blue. “Where is your Rabbi Elazar?” “He’s down there,” I said. “No, he’s not,” the Arab said. His smile disappeared. “You’re lying. The carpentry shop is locked.” “Not downstairs in the carpentry shop. Down on the beach.” I gripped the doorknob tightly, waiting for the second when I could close the door and lock it as hard as I could. “You’re one of the boys from his school?” “Sort of,” I said, and a smile escaped from my lips. “And your school is here?” Very impolitely, he peered into the house. “Really? So small? You learn here? And eat here and everything?” “Sort of,” I said again. “So why is your school in such a tiny place? It’s not good to have such small and crowded quarters. Tell your teacher you want a new school building — a nice place, with a board and desks.” I don’t even know why I answered him. “We need place for the carpentry shop, not just for a normal classroom.” “Of course, of course!” he cried. “My children have a big hall for woodworking in their school, and they make wonderful things there. Why do you have this old house? Tell Elazar you want a

new, big school, a fancy building.” Suddenly I sensed someone standing behind me, and I turned around. Nechemiah was there, wrapped in my blanket. It was no wonder he’d heard the conversation; our room was very close to the door. He spoke up. “I’ll tell the owner what you said. Thank you, and goodbye.” He closed the door firmly and locked it. “Why are you talking to Arabs?” he asked me. “Ugh, now I’m all dizzy.” “Why did you get up?” I asked. “Because I saw that you don’t know
When I saw who was standing there, I regretted opening the door in the first place. that you don’t get into conversations with Arabs, and for sure not with Abu Kassem.” “Do you know him?” “No. And that’s not his name. I think one of your friends made up the name for anyone who comes here about the house.” “Huh? My friends know him?” “Either him or the others. You think you’re the first person Abu Kassem is trying to convince to persuade my father to move out of here?” I looked at the closed door, as if I could see Abu Kassem or whatever his name was through it. “Why is he trying to do that?” I asked. “I told you, he’s not the only one.” Nechemiah inched toward his bed, carefully lifting the edges of the blanket. “He’s not the only one?” “It’s a valuable area. Lots of people want it.” “The whole area, or just your house?” But Nechemiah didn’t answer me. He was already back in bed, with the blanket up to his nose.
***** “Ariella!” Her father stood up from his place when he heard the croak through the phone. “What happened to you?” “Just pressure,” she managed to squeak. “Pressure?! In your throat?” “Something like that.” “I guess I haven’t heard you in a long time. Or is it something sudden?” “Both,” she whispered. “You need to go to the speech therapist again, the one who treated you last time you were hoarse like this. Find out why it keeps coming back. That polyp on your vocal chords disappeared a long time ago, didn’t it?” She shrugged, as if to say, don’t know, don’t remember — not that he could see her. “You can’t neglect yourself,” he said sternly. “I know…” She sighed. “What are you doing about it?” “I made an appointment.” She could hardly get the words out. “With the speech therapist? Good. And did you cancel all your private lessons?” “Uh-huh.” “Do you want Shoshi to come and help you out? Or Lakey? Dishes, laundry, whatever?” “It’s fine,” she whispered. Her throat was on fire. “Being hoarse doesn’t affect my washing machine.” “I could have waited until you feel better to hear that pearl of wisdom,” he said chidingly. “It’s not worth exerting yourself to say it. So I’m hanging up now, Ariella. I don’t want you to exert yourself to answer me.” “Wait,” she whispered. “Osher.” “What about Osher?” her father asked. He did not hang up. “What’s the story?” She tried to use the least amount of words possible. “You’re asking me?” “Uh-huh.” “Mommy looked into it, and so did

you. I also tried, but so far I haven’t been able to get any information.” He was quiet. “What can I do?” Now it was his turn to sigh deeply. “We’re thinking about it. We’ll probably go to him — Mommy and I — to see who and what this is all about.” “No,” she blurted out. “No? What no? Wait, don’t answer me.” He paused. “We’ll talk and then decide what to do. Somehow, it doesn’t sound as bad as some of the other places he’s landed in those other times.” “Yes,” she said thoughtfully. “I asked you not to answer me! Good night, Ariella. Make yourself a cup of hot tea with lemon, and go to sleep early. And tell your speech therapist that you need to get to the root of the problem. We can’t have this hoarseness coming back all the time.” She obediently hung up the phone and went to boil up some water. B’ezras Hashem, she would tell Rivi, her speech therapist, that she needed something to get to the root of the issue. Rivi would certainly agree with her. The question only was whether the root of the issue was something within Rivi’s ability to treat. That was surely clear to Tatty, as well. He was a thorough person who always tried to get to the root of things. But they both knew very well that the best solution was not always to expose the roots, to drill into them and clean them out. Sometimes roots preferred to be covered and kept in the dark. Ariella stirred her tea. She couldn’t stand tea, but it did provide some relief for her aching throat. True, that was just treating the symptom, and not the real problem. If only she could finally learn to speak properly and utter all different types of sounds, then the problem of her hoarseness would be resolved permanently. That’s what Rivi kept saying. The question was, why, after she’d learned to “speak properly,” was she going back to those same mistakes in how she uttered certain sounds? That meant that the hoarseness was only a symptom. So they would be back to digging around the roots. No, thank you. She did not want to think about the Belgian shidduch she’d turned down, and about how stuck she was, and about Osher, who was just as stuck. The worst thing would be to think about Osher. He was so like her, and all his failings were actually an enlarged reflection of her own failings. She could think about him if she really wanted to, but she would stick to sweet thoughts, like the question of whether he’d taken to Acco the linen that she’d bought him, with the colorful patchwork of squares, and if he was using it, and if he even remembered that she’d bought it for him. She could, of course, call and ask Shoshi to check the linen closet to see if he’d taken it or not, but Tatty had asked her to go to sleep early.
Osher When Nechemiah’s mother returned, he was already sleeping very deeply. She preferred for him to “sleep well, because it’s the best medicine,” so she didn’t wake him up

to ask him to move to his regular bed. Shlomo and I got into bed very quietly so as not to wake him. Not that we usually shmooze much; we don’t really have what to talk about. But this time we didn’t even say the regular: “Do you mind if I shut the light?” Meaning, Shlomo didn’t say it, and I didn’t reply, “A few more minutes, please.” He just shut the light without asking. So I didn’t say anything either, and just did my own thing: I got up and turned the light back on. Shlomo did not get up to switch it off again; he just gave me a look and then pulled the blanket over his eyes. I sat for a few moments and thought about how disgusting it was that Shlomo didn’t think about me; he’d just shut the light, leaving me to find my pajama shirt in the dark. It had disappeared, as usual. I looked around the bed and thought about how I needed to teach him to be considerate of those around him, even though I’m definitely not the best teacher for this type of thing. Then I got up to search some more. It took me a good few minutes until I found my shirt inside the pillowcase. I have no idea how it got there. I had an urge to keep the light on, just because, but I switched it off. I know how to get dressed in the dark. Shlomo didn’t react, although it didn’t look like he’d fallen asleep. So I decided to stop thinking about him. I lay down and tossed and turned from side to side for what felt like a long while. Finally, I got up and went over to the window. This was unusual. I usually fall asleep very fast; I’ve been doing that since I’m little. My mother says that I live in a very tiring way, and she’s right. I’m usually exhausted at the end of the day, and if I can just manage to lie still for a few minutes, I fall asleep easily. But when something bothers me, I can’t fall asleep. The windowsill was old, painted

in light brown. Something about it reminded me of the Shabbos before Ariella’s wedding. Actually, this whole room reminded me of the apartment we’d stayed in when we went to Yerushalayim for Nosson’s aufruf. I don’t know where Ariella was then; she must have been with a friend or something, but the rest of the family went in for the simcha. We were put up in a small, very tidy apartment, and Mommy asked me not to touch anything. Tatty and Mommy slept in the bed-
But when something bothers me, I can’t fall asleep. room, Shoshi and Lakey in the crowded dining room, and I — who had just turned eleven that Shabbos — got the little room near the bedroom. I think old people must have lived there; to this day I remember the horrible smell of mothballs that kept me from sleeping. So pretty early in the night I was standing at the windowsill that looked a lot like this one. It was in Cheshvan, right after yom tov. I have no idea how Nosson knew it was my birthday. On second thought, it really was just like Ariella to tell him about it. Right after we washed for the Friday night seudah, Nosson asked to speak. He announced to everyone that there was another “chasan” present who was no less important than he, and he began to sing Siman Tov U’mazel Tov. After everyone finished singing with him, he called me over and gave me a gift, a comic book about the meshalim of the Dubno Maggid. Ariella was very excited when I showed her the book after we got home. She doesn’t know that I’ve since lost the book, and I hope she never asks me for it. It’s been a long time since it disappeared; it happened around the time Nosson was niftar. I
was so stunned by his passing. Until then, I hadn’t known anyone who was alive and then died. My grandfather passed away when I was three, but I hardly remember anything from that age, and I’d only met him about four times in my life. There was also the older man from shul who would give chocolate to the kids; he was niftar when I was six or seven, but I didn’t know him that well, either. I remember learning mishnayos for him and wondering if, before he was niftar, he’d asked someone to take over his job of distributing chocolate. Well, either he didn’t ask anyone, or that person did not carry out his instructions, because we never got chocolate after that. So maybe I was a little sad that he passed away, but I don’t know how much of that was because of him and how much was because of the chocolate. With Nosson it was different. He passed away very suddenly. The truth is that it wasn’t so sudden; there were about two and a half weeks between the accident and when he was niftar. But I think that even twenty weeks wouldn’t have been enough time to absorb such a thing. Ariella had hardly had a chance to be his wife. Mommy even told me that there were things they hadn’t yet taken from our house to theirs. Now I’ll have to wait a long, long time, until Shoshi gets married, to have a new brother-in-law. I mean, I guess I could get a new brother-in-law sooner, through Ariella, but I can’t imagine her getting married again. She was a really successful girl once, and I was the one who was stuck, a good-for-nothing. Today she’s also stuck, poor thing, and it’s such a shame. Because at least I got used to it already. But it’s really not my problem. That’s what Tatty and Mommy would tell me if they knew what I was thinking about. To be continued…

You pass them on the highway and see them parked in neighborhood driveways. Recreational Vehicles (RVs) have grown in popularity, yet most of us have never spent a night in one. Let’s have a look at this quintessentially American mode of travel and leisure. There is a great disparity between the alluring idea of travel and how the actual traveling goes down. Packing, cramped seats, bad food, hotels that aren’t up to par, and a host of other inconveniences often leave vacationers yearning for the warm embrace of their own home. Recent years have seen a growing number of American families turn to a form of travel and accommodation that affords self-sufficiency, control and the freedom of continuous adventure. Today, recreational vehicles, more commonly referred to as RVs, are filling American roads and campsites every summer weekend. And over 100 years since the first RV was manufactured, what is old has become new and trendy again.

What Is an RV? The primary function of an RV is to serve as a home on wheels, providing families on the go with (almost) everything they enjoy at home. By far, its most common application is to serve as a home base for campers spending time at one of the many thousands of camping sites across the country. While the majority of the trip is spent enjoying the outdoors, the rig is leveled and hooked up to electricity, water and sewage lines so that basic daily needs are available on-site. RVs come in many shapes and sizes, but can be broken down into two general categories: travel trailers and motor homes. The first is not motorized and is towed by a pickup truck or SUV. Travelers spend all their traveling time in the lead vehicle and move to the RV upon arrival at their destination. The towing vehicle can then be disconnected and used for shopping or a local trip. A motor home, on the other hand, is one large unit with living quarters that are in use while driving. Those using RVs for longdistance travel appreciate this arrangement as family members can eat, work or play in the back while one parent drives in the front, as long as they are properly fastened in (exact laws vary by state and are hard to enforce). Motor homes, of course, cost more, depreciate faster and require more maintenance, but they are the clear choice of many who live out of their RV for longer periods of time. Basic RV trailers can be bought for as little as $10,000, while new motorhomes start at closer to the $100,000 range. Because they are vehicles, they also require registration and payment of taxes, with insurance being an added cost as well. Maximizing the interior of the RV and purchasing necessary camping equipment are additional expenses that should not be overlooked. For those who choose not to spend that much, there are a number of RV rentals that operate in a manner similar to car rentals or Airbnbs. However, it should be noted that it is difficult to find availability during peak season for a reasonable price.
Living the RV Life Americans love their RVs — and their camping. This passion has only been building over the decades and has led to record RV sales in the last

few years. In total, some estimate that the industry has an annual value of over $100 billion! When the coronavirus hit, many people were afraid of spending time on planes and in hotels, and regular destinations were closed or limited due to lockdown restrictions. This meant that while other industries were teetering on the brink, the RV sales, rentals and service sectors saw increased demand across the country. In the frum world, RVs have exploded in growth in just the past half-decade or so, mostly in suburban communities where going to the Catskills isn’t popular. We spoke with the Blaus*, a family of RV enthusiasts who told us of about 30 heimish families who’ve recently purchased their own trailers or motor homes (mostly the former). This might be a shock to many, but it is actually unsurprising when pitting RVs against traditional travel. There is no need to worry about kosher kitchens, keeping kosher food fresh, and appropriate settings for children; everything’s right there with you! “For families with children, these trips are
not only enjoyable, but also provide a quality, well-rounded trip,” Mr. Blau says. “We spend time together enjoying nature, away from the hustle and bustle, and learn to make do with basics. Not only do we love it as parents, but our children beg us to keep going back!” Most local RV trips take place over the weekend, which means that Shabbos is spent in the outdoors. There are a number of hilchos Shabbos with which one needs to become familiar, including carrying, techum Shabbos, how to dispose of used water, electrical issues and the like. It is recommended to speak with a posek before leaving on such an adventure. Families who take on such a trip have an almost endless amount of campgrounds available to them. Established campgrounds charge a nominal fee per night, and reservations in advance are strongly recommended. Each

Out in the Boondocks Every fringe movement risks the potential of becoming too successful and turning mainstream, losing some of its allure in the process. The proliferation of campgrounds with electricity, water and sewage lines, let alone the presence of countless other RVers, has helped spawn a movement called boondocking, in which RV vacationers sleep off the grid in undeveloped campgrounds and enjoy a real nomadic experience. Boondocking, of course, derives from the word boondocks, an unflattering term for rural, out-of-the-way locations and the supposedly unsophisticated folks who inhabit them. Its origins trace back to U.S. soldiers who fought in the Philippines at the turn of the 20th century, where bundok was Tagalog (the local language) for “mountain” and informally used to refer to inaccessible rural inland areas. With time, the definition of what is considered boondocking has itself expanded significantly. Liberal interpretations of the term include staying at regular campgrounds, but not hooking up the vehicle to the available utilities. Ironically, one of the most popular forms, also called Wallydocking, involves staying at the picturesque vestige of wild nature: Walmart parking lots. The company is very accommodating of campers and allows them to stay overnight, subject to local ordinances. It is generally expected of visitors to park at the back or near the garden section, arrive late and leave early, and keep a low profile by not grilling or setting up shop in other ways. For families who are taking longer crosscountry trips or are otherwise unable to reach a suitable camping destination, urban boondocking saves the day — and night. Others enjoy authentic boondocking and are happy to trade access to a superstore for the serene — and free — experience of living in the wild — the way it was intended to be...

RV gets a designated space, and a hookup is available for electricity, water and sewage. The most popular RV destination in America is the enormous Yellowstone National Park in the Northwest, which sees a quarter-million visitors a year. Closer to home, Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia and Orlando, Florida, are the prime East Coast draws. For serious travelers, a summer season could see a lengthy trip spanning large swaths of the continental United States. In Alaska, where some families choose to fly to and rent RVs locally, the Chabad Rabbi in Anchorage has in recent years set up a bit of an RV park on his property — such has been the demand in the community.
Home on Wheels Describing the inside of an RV would be akin to describing the inside of a regular home: It really depends. Every RV has some sort of kitchen space, a bathroom and basic sleeping accommodations. Generally, the living space doubles as the sleeping space, with some vehicles offering creative applications of basic furniture as nighttime beds. Air conditioning is common in RVs. Even in motor homes, though, the vehicle engine is typically not strong enough to power it, and a separate generator must be employed. Humidity is a common issue, especially throughout the summer months or when cooking takes place, and many travelers use dehumidifiers to remain comfortable. Just as with any other form of travel accommodations,

there are many levels of luxury available on the market today. Companies now manufacture RVs that cost upward of $2 million, with amenities that even many regular homes lack. These may include entertainment centers, fireplaces, hot tubs, smart appliances and magnificent decor. The options for high-end customization mean that almost anything can be moved onto an RV, if so desired. Where do you park the RV when not in use? It’s not uncommon to find some parked in local driveways, but those who travel infrequently or don’t have where to keep it generally rent storage space, with indoor options available to protect the RV from the elements. Many people continue traveling throughout the year, with some migrating north and south as the seasons shift in a phenomenon fittingly referred to as snowbirding. It is estimated that over 1 million Americans live in recreational vehicles full time, a trend embraced by many millennials who don’t subscribe to traditional ideas of “settling down.” In many ways, RVs represent the millennial mindset of personal independence, exploration and comically big vehicles. Along the vast expanses of the western United States, the hundreds of millions of breathtaking acres owned by the federal government are enjoyed by boondocking families (see sidebar). In fact, many draw a connection to RVs in their earliest form, when horse-drawn covered wagons carried brave pioneers as the American frontier expanded westward. Today, RVs are as big, strong and utilitarian as they’ve ever been. With the sustained growth of this movement, it’s expected that this industry will continue to keep the good times rolling.

No car is as nostalgiaevoking as the station wagon. While today’s kids crane their necks to follow these boxy vehicles in the rare event one is sighted, many of us grew up against the backdrop of a station wagon parked in each driveway and scores of them dotting the roads. As you prepare to pack those bags neatly into the trunk of your SUV, or a carrier turtle perhaps, we take you on a trip down nostalgia lane — where summer travel meant sixteen-passenger cars, boxes piled upon the roofs, motels, and lots of sweet memories.
Heading North By: Nesanel Yoel Safran
We weren’t a big “vacation” family, as in packup, sleep-over, adventurous sojourns. Day trips on Sundays to mishpacha were more my parents’ speed. But once a year, we packed our baby-blue ’66 Oldsmobile F-85 station wagon to the gills and headed up north to Old Orchard Beach, Maine. These were the days before car air conditioning was de rigueur and a big cheilek of the trip was
the noisy battle between my sister, whose hair would go flying in the wind from the wide-open window, and her shvitzing brother, who was more than willing to throw care — and her hair — to the wind. After getting bored with this tumult, I’d eventually do a backflip over the back seat and secret myself in the boxy rear cargo area, along with all its treasures. In retrospect, I’m sure my parents were aware that my sudden quietude was the result of my mouth being occupied with purloined
126

nosh, but I suppose the silence was worth it. (Come to think of it, maybe I had something to do with the infrequency of our family trips…) Having snacked my fill, I’d worm my way back to the big tailgate window, raise my head just high enough to take in the three-lane panorama of traffic, and surreptitiously study and taitch up the various vehicles that we passed and that passed us. Of course, there was even less air back there, but somehow, between the distractions and the removal of our “sibling competition,” I was able to breathe easier. Finally we’d arrive, inevitably staying in one of the ubiquitous drive-up motels that grew more frequent and pricey as one got closer to the ocean. The maalah was that each room, or suite, had its own private entrance and included a parking space right in front of the door. After schlepping in our stuff, packing the room’s mini refrigerator with our perishable victuals and turning the air conditioner (finally!) to full blast, I would have been more than happy to just hang around the motel, making frequent trips to the hallway ice machine and bouncing in air-conditioned comfort on my bigger-than-at-home bed. But, as my sister informed me, we were on vacation, after all, so out we went to explore the sunny rows of souvenir shops, full of kitschy mementos that would last us until my parents forgot what the trip had been like and would take us on vacation once again. The Best-Rated Car By: Miriam K.
I was too young to remember my parents’ first car, the one they’d purchased right before I was born. But my mother would speak of it as if it had been a Rolls-Royce. However, with its back door that had to be banged shut and its dented exterior, it would warrant “yeshivish car” as its honest description. Although my parents didn’t need the room a spacious station wagon offered, the bar-
gain price of a few hundred dollars made them clinch the deal. My father viewed his four wheels as a golden ticket to the world of chesed. He could give family members rides to simchas. He could offer to schlep big items for others (when the car’s seats were down). And for us children, best of all, we could always invite our cousins on our family outings. My mother’s photo albums document the places we’d go. However, our memories and hearts are full of the glorious times we had getting there, while sitting in the back of the station wagon,

squished with our cousins. On regular car rides, my siblings and I all wanted to sit in the second row — but when cousins joined us, the back became the box-office seats. And when our new (old!) station wagon was equipped with not one long horizontal bench seat, but rather two short ones facing each other, that was most certainly station wagon heaven! We could squeeze in even even more kids, which spelled more fun. Even the longest trip was too short. We cousins sat glued to the back window, playing our waveto-all-the-cars-behind-us game. Sounds simple, but the rules were complicated. We would have to guess whether the driver would wave back, ignore or smile. Gleeful shrieks ensued when our predictions were right. Shock when the dour, somber-looking gentleman would erupt in a wide smile and add a funny face to boot. Disappointment when the kind-looking grandma would stare straight ahead, expressionless. We eventually outgrew our backseat games, but our invitations for family and friends to join us when they needed a ride lived on. Our entire family was unanimous in our belief that a station wagon’s benefits far outweighed a minivan’s. Although station wagons were becoming hopelessly old-fashioned, we held onto ours for dear life. In fact, in about 2005, a shadchan was pressuring my mother to consider a shidduch for me with a boy from a family in a higher financial bracket. My mother wasn’t being successful trying to convince her that we were not tzugepast. How did my mother finally explain to this stranger that we were far from keep-up-with-the-Joneses folks? Delightfully, she hit on the perfect line: “We still drive a station wagon!” And so, even when it came to shidduchim, our trusty station wagon served a useful purpose.

Rambler Ramblings By: Sandy Eller
As a kid, I thought station wagons were the coolest cars out there, but since we were only three kids, our family chariot was a 1964 Rambler, a car that we kept until 1978. Built four years before seat belts became mandatory in all cars, our nondescript blue four-door sedan lacked both seat belts and air conditioning. We drove with the windows open when the weather was warm,
a situation that was always problematic as we passed the Belt Parkway garbage dump on our frequent trips to visit our grandparents in Brooklyn. The awful smell as we traveled through the area, which has since been developed into a lovely shopping center, was one problem, while our windblown hair was quite another. Always prepared, my mother would pass around the family comb so we could all neaten up and look nice for our grandparents. There were also always arguments about who got to sit near those coveted windows and who got stuck in the middle seat — which, in addition to
130
The Boro Park View
being airless, also had the dubious distinction of having a big bump on the floor to accommodate the car’s lower workings that made it even less desirable. Announcements that we were going somewhere would have one or all of us racing to call out, “I get a window both ways!” Or, when my sister realized that some trips might require more than one stop, the more definitive, “I get a window all ways!” As the youngest, guess who usually lost out and ended up in the middle? That’s right, me… The CD players that we all use to keep our kids entertained on trips was nowhere to be found in the Rambler. If we wanted music, we made it ourselves — and my music-loving father was more than happy to spur us on. One crazy trip had us driving someone else’s Cadillac down to Florida, and even though it was a luxury car, it still had no cassette player. I have very vivid memories of traveling down a Florida highway, with all of us singing songs from the London School of Jewish Song to pass the miles on that endless ride. While that 1964 Rambler is the car that stands out in my mind, for my father it was his 1958 Buick, bought the same year he married my mother. For years, when you asked my father when he got married the answer was always, “Well, it was a 1958 Buick...” — a reply that my mother, thankfully, always took in stride. When my parents’ 60th anniversary rolled around, I knew exactly what to get them as a gift: a miniature 1958 blue Buick in a plastic display case. When you travel in a car today, you probably don’t even think about how it takes you from Point A to Point B. But years later, when you remember those trips, those memories take you to an all-new destination: back to a different time and place, one that hopefully makes you smile.

My summer travel memories are from the backseat — and I don’t mean the seats behind the driver, nor the bench behind that, but the trunk of my father’s station wagon, in which we spent hours of squished delight on the road. While most station wagon trunks had the ability to convert to seating, with a bench that pulled up from the trunk floor to face backward, our model maximized the trunk space to its fullest. Two benches would pop up across from one an-
other, and we’d sit three against three, our knees banging against the others’ for the hours-long trips. We’d watch the traffic whiz by over the heads of the siblings and cousins we faced for the duration of the trip (since the car accommodated sixteen passengers, we never traveled without a guest), and we gaily sang songs we improvised to the theme of “smashed potatoes,” with joyful abandon expressing our sardine-like conditions. We trunk passengers weren’t the only ones po-
132

sitioned awkwardly for the ride. Every extra inch in the car was maximized. My older siblings, who occupied seats near the “bump” toward the front, would sit leaning against a stack of linens that was piled in that space, limbs angled to accommodate all that bedding. (Come to think of it, why did we need all that bedding? We always lodged in motels that provided linens!) The packages holding our belongings would be piled up high and tied to the roof, where they would bump along safely until our destination. (Safely, that is, except for once when the great, big pile snapped loose midway, and our belongings scattered all over the highway, with cars stopping as we tried to retrieve random items strewn across the road.) In this manner we’d travel to Rhode Island, to Washington, D.C., to Maine, to Vermont, to New Hampshire, and even as far as Niagara Falls. Every so often our luxury car (navy-blue and parquet; those were the days!) would come to a stop at a lookout point, rest area or — in a desperate situation — the shoulder of the highway. My father would pull open the impossibly long hood and prop it up with the antenna-like rods that would hold it aloft, obstructing the entire front view. He’d then haul out the multi-gallon jug of water from near one of our feet in the trunk and pour its contents into one of those unnamed mechanisms in the belly of the engine to deal with the overheated car. Numb from inertia, we’d finally pull up in front of the picturesque motel-style lodgings, the car parked literally at the door. Shakily, we’d hop out of the trunk and head in to stretch those cramped limbs before we’d go back out into our car and onto the road for more hours of travel fun.

Camp, oh glorious camp! I’ll never forget that summer. There we were — 60 overexcited girls, 60 emotional moms and 6,000 boxes — waiting for the camp bus. There was one bus for us campers, and another bus for our luggage. While we waited, another two buses arrived for a different camp. Finally, we schlepped our boxes onto one bus, pushed into the other bus, and waved to our mothers with a promise that definitely, for sure, we would be leaving something over from the nosh box at least until the third day of camp. Then we arrived at camp! We tumbled off the bus and waited for our luggage. And waited. And then waited a bit more. Then the bus arrived. The bus doors opened. We climbed on. And looked. And looked again. Then we looked a bit more. Not a single box had a familiar name. Our bus, along with our 6,000 boxes, had gone to the other camp. We had to wait a day for our stuff. That one night without our blankets and pillows — and, gasp! nosh boxes — was a night that’ll go down in history as the Grand Mixup. I don’t believe such a thing ever happened again. Nowadays, all the driv-
ers are warned beforehand. Thanks to us, everyone sits on their boxes all the way to camp to ensure a timely delivery. I do recall suddenly realizing, ten years after that episode, that the girls from the other camp didn’t either have their stuff that first night! Oh, well. Ten years too late.
So! What does one pack for camp? You can definitely take a fan, ’cause I hear it’s hot in camp. Preferably a large fan that’s freestanding, a clip-on fan, a handheld one and a necklace one. One that comes with a light, and one that comes with a spritz bottle. For the fans that don’t have wires, remember to take about 284 batteries.
Siddur, Tehillim, Krias Shema leiner. Trip bag, duffle bag, backpack. Nosh box. Towels, shower pouf, shower caddy, shampoo, conditioner, soap. Toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, mouthwash. (Y’know, contrary to popular belief, licorice does not discriminate between teeth at home and those in camp.)
Dresses, skirts, sweaters, shirts, T-shirts, shells. Hangers, shelf paper, laundry bag. Laundry detergent, dryer sheets.
Nosh box. Camera, charger, camera bag, eight SD cards. (Kidding, kidding. Seven is enough.) Blanket, pillows, linen sets, mattress protector. Some take their own mattress, but you don’t have to. Imagine schlep-

as a camper, I came up with the genius idea to switch nosh boxes with random bunkers around camp. That night, while the owls hooted, four wide awake girls snuck out of their bunkhouse, scouted out the camp, and proceeded to do just that. Our head

counselor thought the idea was hilarious. Our director, not so much. We were banned from night activity that evening while we switched back all the boxes. A few years later, when I was a counselor myself, I wanted to replay that scene as a breakout for aqua day. I switched boxes around and added
goldfish to the boxes as a nice finishing touch. Don’t worry — this time I asked the director. She loved the idea! Needless to say, that year aqua day was gevaldig! Disclaimer: Please do not try this in camp, unless you get permission from your director.
So back to our list: Stones for your nosh box. (If anyone decides to do this shtick in camp, they will not want to schlep the nosh boxes with stones inside.) Scotch tape, scissors, pens, markers, papers. Safety pins, sewing kit, bobby pins. Books, folding chair. Umbrella, poncho. Extra labels, cosmetic bag. Batteries, charger, flashlight. Sunscreen, shoe polish, deodorant. Extra pair of glasses. Lenses, case and solution. Eye drops. Vaseline, bandages, Tylenol, tissue box.

Remember, girls! Camp shopping is part
Maybe it’s as simple as changing your water
of the fun! Enjoy your time with your mother, and trust her when she says you can survive in camp without that extra (and I really mean the extra) one top that everyone is wearing. Last year, while shopping with my daughter without knowing for sure whether camp would open or not, I overheard a conversation that went something like this: Daughter: I love that skirt! Malky, Gitty and Chany have it. Can I buy it? Mother: Do you like it? Or do you want it because your friends have it? And why do you even want to have the same as them? Don’t you want something different? Daughter: But, Ma, I love it! Mother: Okay, try it on. I was watching the exchange. Then I was in line while they were waiting to pay. Mother: So, you’re happy with everything we’re buying? Daughter: Yes, thank you so much. I’ll be matching with my friends all summer. Camp did not open that summer. All the matching outfits were pretty lonely. I’m still trying to figure that out. Do they love their uniform so much throughout the year that they even want one through the summer? Oh, and that mother? Yeah, okay, okay, it was me. Anyway! Shopping is really enjoyable! And if you focus on the big picture, it’s even more enjoyable. Rule of thumb: The less you schlep, the less you have to worry about losing things, the less you have to worry about washing things, and the less you have to worry about having enough place for everything. As my wise mother used to say: “The stores are not closing after camp starts.” Oh, was it your mother who said that? Fair enough. Insurance card, pocket money, autograph book.

in this article is basic and not at all a complete, thorough list. The sky’s the limit, and you can take literally hundreds of more items. But refer to the previous section before choosing to do so. Mothers, please! No need to over-send. I learned this after the first year I sent off my girls. They were literally the suppliers for the whole camp. While it’s good to share, it’s also a responsibility to be busy lending out the pizza maker and iron and ironing board and mini fridge and vacuum cleaner. Okay, not the vacuum cleaner. I miss camp so much! But you know what I remember most? The memories. (Ha-ha.) Have an amazing summer!

In first endorsement in the mayoral race
NYPD union endorses Andrew Yang for Mayor After an endorsement by the FDNY union last week, Mayoral candidate Andrew yang landed another big endorsement from a law enforcement union. This time from the Captains Endowment Association, which represents all NYPD Executives in the ranks of Captain to Deputy Chief & Police Surgeons. This marks the first endorse by a NYPD union to any candidate in this election cycle. The union President Chris Monahan underscored Yang’s common-sense approach to safety, criticizing the other candidates for “casting the law enforcement as enemies.” Monahan praised Yang’s business experience as an important factor in his decision saying “we need an outside business entrepreneur” to deal with the safety challenges of the city. Yang thanked the union for the endorsement underscoring the importance of proper cooperation between city

hall and law enforcement. “If you have a mayor and a police force who are not on the same page, we are seeing the results now.” Yang said, alluding to the ongoing rift between the police department and the De Blasio administration. “This to me should tell all New Yorkers all they need to know about Eric Adams” Abdrew Yang said about the endorsement. Emphasizing that they made this decision even though Adams himself was once a member of this union. Yang has criticized Adams on the debate stage about his flipflopping message around safety stating that he delivers different promises to different audiences. “To some people he says he will follow the model set by Mayor Giuliani and to others he says he will follow the path of Mayor Dinkins” Yang said.

CHANGE-
point
A New Worldwide Initiative for Women
With the conclusion of the 30-day mourning period for the kedoshim of Meron, Gedolei Yisroel worldwide are calling on all women to be mechazik b’tznius.
Many women from all over the world*, heeding the plea of the
Gedolim, have already taken action by joining CHANGE-point, the new women’s international initiative.
Change-point was founded with the mission to b’siyatta dishmaya bring about real change in the areas of Kedushas Yisroel.
It ’s no secret
that every year is bringing with it a new decline in tznius. It has reached the point that our men and bochurim are openly decrying how our streets have become a minefield for them.
Many women are expressing
their great feelings of panic when viewing the deteriorating situation. They are asking the fearful question — what is going to be with their children and grandchildren?! The essence of tznius is speedily drifting away from us, and the future of Kedushas Yisroel is at great risk.
CHANGE-point IS THE ANSWER! CHANGE-point is our life-rope. CHANGE-point is the worldcenter, that brings together women from across the spectrum of Klal Yisroel in order to actualize a common goal. CHANGE-point is about tapping into our deep desire for kedusha, and unifying our talents and strengths to b’ezras Hashem bring about real change in all areas of Kedushas Yisroel.
To join us, please leave your contact details at

Don’t Miss Out
At last week’s opening session, R’ Chaim Leibish Rottenberg shlit”a warmly bentched all the women who have responded to this revolutionary venture. This was followed by an open round-table discussion where vital tznius issues were brought up and discussed. The participants shared their ideas and suggestions, and expressed great excitement at the route CHANGE-point is taking.
You, too, can be part of this!
This is your opportunity to heed the call of the Rabbonim and contribute to making this revolution a reality and restoring the crown and spirit of tznius. In the z’chus of strengthening the Mitzva of , you and your family will surely be zoche to much shalom and shmirah, as the pasuk concludes .
*Including Boro Park, Williamsburg, Monsey, Lakewood, Passaic, Baltimore, Montreal, Toronto, London, Manchester, Gateshead, and Eretz Yisroel. CHANGE-point is being conducted as a z’chus for the memory of the kodoshim of Meron and for the refuah sheleimah of ALL cholei Yisroel. This ad is being sponsored as a z’chus l’refuah sheleima for a 16 year old bochur, Yosef Ezriel ben Chaya Michal and a 12 year old boy, Elazer ben Ruama, who are both still in the ICU since the Meron tragedy, and need major rachamei shamayim.
You don’t need the history of road games, trust me. You don’t even need to know who invented what game that was played by whom and in which year. All you need is oodles of great road game ideas now, please, because the whines of “Are we there yet?!” — that headache-inducing phrase most detested by front-seat passengers and most used by the back-seaters — have reached a crescendo. And your car hasn’t yet turned off your own block. So how can you turn down the dial on this cacophony and play up the fun in your vehicle until you get to where you’re going? Road games that are simple, kid-friendly, and require no equipment other than the occasional pen are worth their weight in gold. These super-fun classics will stave off whining and build your family a cache of priceless — and zany — memories. So, let’s play!
License Plate Game All you need for this one is literate players, pens and papers. And a strong reminder about honesty being the best policy and eyes staying on their own papers, yada yada. Have everyone compete to find and write down as many different states as they can from the plates of passing cars. Award double points for knowing the capital of the state and triple points for unique plates like MD, EMT or diplomatic. Enjoy the glorious quiet that intense concentration brings!
Classic A–Z
Song Sequence
This game reminds me of traveling up to camp, with Gombo’s billboard always playing a starring role, somehow. The game can be played competitively or as a group; the focus is to find words starting with every letter of the alphabet going from A to Z.
Never stop singing! Challenge your carload to start one song and move from one to the next, finding a word in each song that begins another. For example: “Siman tov umazel tov… ul’chol Yisroel > Yisroel betach baHashem ezram u’maginam hu > Hu Elokeinu Hu Avinu...” See how long you can keep the music going, and feel free to harmonize!
Turn your attention out the window and look at anything written you can find. Look at road signs, branded trucks, storefronts and more to get a word from each letter, and call them out as you spot them. Examples: “A — Abbey’s!” “B — Bank of America!”
Color Craze This is an old classic my brothers and I were fond of. Have each participant choose a color, and while keeping a sharp eye on the stream of traffic, see which player tallies the most vehicles in their chosen color. You’ll get a great idea of what’s in vehicular vogue.
Rhyme It Badchanim-in-training, gather round. For those who love playing with prose, have one person pick a word with everyone taking a turn saying a word that rhymes with it. The first person to be stumped or to repeat a word loses.

Acronyms
I Spy
This game turns the road into a blank canvas for serious hilarity. Take turns creating acronyms using the passing license plates. Examples: “HSA — Hillel Sounds Awesome!” “YHD – Yams Help Doughnuts!” Cracking up guaranteed.
A classic of classics for good reason, this is fun for young and old. Have all players take turns thinking of something they see and hinting about it in a vague way, beginning with: “I spy with my little eye something… green!” or “...fuzzy!” or “...cold!” and so on. The other players can then take turns asking yes or no questions until they can figure out what it is.
20 Questions This is the abstract version of I Spy, because the item in question doesn’t have to be seen. All players should take turns thinking of a person, place or thing. The noun can be current or ancient — anything goes. The other players must guess what it is, using fewer than 20 yes or no questions to figure it out.
Color Guess This is a great interactive game for the young ones and will puff them with pride as they guess the answer. Have the older set recite a list of things in the same color, and the littles ones will have to guess and shout out the common denominator. Example: “Bananas, sun, corn, our kitchen walls...” — “Yellow!”
The Name Game
Fortunately Unfortunately
Here’s a fun twist on the A to Z memory game “I’m going on a picnic...” (“...and I packed an apple-banana-candy” and so on). This game is another old family favorite, and the fun grows with the amount of creativity you invest. Going from A to Z or alef to taf, each player takes a turn adding a name for the letter the game is up to, but only after reciting all the other names from the beginning of the list. A player who leaves out a name is out of the game. Example: “Appel.” “Appel, Bergman.” “Appel, Bergman, Cohen.” “Appel, Bergman, Cohen, Davidson…” Challenge one another’s memories and imaginations with names that are long and unique, and see who can rattle off the entire list from A to Z!
Have the funnest collab ever, where everyone’s an author and crazy plot twists are the norm. Have one player begin a story with a sentence, and then going from player to player, each one should take a turn adding one sentence at a time to the story. The twist? Alternate between “fortunately” and “unfortunately” while adding to the story. Example: “Once upon a time, it really rained cats and dogs.” > “Fortunately, most people were inside their homes.” > “Unfortunately, the roof of someone’s convertible was left open.” Keep going until you’re all laughing too hard to continue.
The Quiet Game Acharon chaviv — it’s time to get some quiet! Instead of hollering for silence, turn it into a game by egging the kiddies on and seeing who can keep their mouths zipped the longest. The first one to speak loses.
Oh, you’ve arrived! See how fun that was? The Boro Park View

History Series Rabbi Avigdor Miller
A novel by Chayala Mann. In Right Angles, you'll laugh and you'll cry along with Perri and Bassie - and their families, too - as they grow and they heal and they learn about sorrow, about joy, about each other, and mostly, about themselves.
Questions & Riddles on Yehoshua & Shoftim. Torahific! Yehoshua and Shoftim presents an intriguing array of riddles and questions-andanswers on Sefer Yehoshua and Sefer Shoftim. Written in Rabbi Maimon Elbaz's inimitable, witty style, the book serves as an excellent resource for teaching both children and adults the many fascinating stories within these sifrei Tanach.
