Please note: (Re: Back in the Seat, Back The Table of in the Day, Issue 89) Contents can I’d like to correct some facts mentioned in the nostalgic station wagon feature. now be found Based on their descriptions, the parents on the secondof Miriam K. and Chana Weisz had Ford (or to-last page. Mercury) station wagons. Ford (and Mercury) wagons are the only ones that had split seats in the back(est, as my daughter would say). But what you show alongside Chana Weisz’s description is a 1980–1985 Caprice Classic wagon. And I would assume that Miriam K.’s parents had an ‘80s Ford wagon (based on her being in the shidduch market in 2005), even though you have a picture of a 1974 LTD Country Squire for her article. Additionally, here are several corrections on Chana’s piece: The car decor was fake wood grain, not parquet. There were no seats behind the bench behind the driver’s seat (implying four rows). These wagons had either a total of three benches, or two benches and then two seats facing each other. Even though these station wagons had two rows of seats in the back, they were still officially eight-passenger cars. (Three in the front, three in the middle, and one on each split seat.) I would love to know how their family squished sixteen passengers into that car. That would mean that they seated five in the front, five in the middle, and six in the back. That is way more than I have ever been able to fit into my wagons, and about a literal ton more than the car is designed to haul! Sincerely, One of the only two or three guys in Monsey still driving a station wagon
THOSE WERE THE DAYS

back in the day, which we filled past capacity. (Were there even seat belts at that point? I think not!) And even the extreme dizziness that engulfed us as the cars flew past us and we viewed everything from the opposite direction did not dispel the excitement of travel. And who can forget lugging those bottles of water to resuscitate the sputtering cars? I wonder if your readers also recall the oversized map we’d open up after pulling over on the shoulder of the highway every time we lost our way. Ah, those were the days! D.L.

(Re: A Place in the Shade, Issue 87) Though we’re not up to investing in a gazebo just yet, the experience of viewing those beautiful pictures and reading about them was a vacation in itself! It really put me into a relaxing summer mode, and with these pictures in my mind, a coffee on my back porch turned into a peaceful getaway. Thank you for such a well-rounded publication, which is always a treat for the eyes and mind. S.R.
YOUR VOICE CLOTHING AND CONSIDERATION
This past Sunday, I was in a clothing store that was running a sale. My daughter and I went into a dressing room, and I was shocked to find lots of clothes on the chair and floor. It seemed that whoever used the dressing room before us couldn’t be bothered to hang the clothes back up on the hook. Truthfully, I’ve seen this happen in the past, but each time I am shocked anew that someone could do such a thing. It truly harms many people: the store owner who ends up with clothes that are wrinkled and maybe dirty, thus making them harder to sell; the next person using the dressing room, who has to deal with the mess; and last, the children who are watching their mother or older siblings modeling wrongful behavior. As you do your shopping, please remember that with a little derech eretz, we could all make a kiddush Hashem and display fine middos and consideration. Please hang up any clothes you try on but don’t end up purchasing! Either put them back in the correct spot, or place them on the rack outside the dressing room that is there for precisely that purpose. L.H. PARSHAS BALAK A Public Eye
Bilam stood, ready to curse Klal Yisroel. But as the Gemara in Bava Basra (60a) explains, when he lifted his eyes, he saw that the entranceways to their homes did not face one another, and he immediately said that this nation was worthy of having the Shechinah rest upon them. Why was Bilam so overcome by this attribute? What was so special about the fact that the doors of the homes of Klal Yisroel did not face one another?
ON THE OUTSKIRTS of Grodno was a factory that produced tabik — snuff. This Jewish-owned enterprise supplied tobacco to much of Poland, Jew and gentile alike. It also provided parnassah to hundreds of Yidden employed on its staff. Since it was a large plant and produced an important product, the Polish government took special interest in it. One day, the officials discovered that the factory was closed two days a week — Shabbos and Sunday — and they were dismayed. This was disruptive to the production! They ordered the factory to operate six days a week, from Monday through Shabbos. The Yidden of Grodno were distraught. The mass chillul Shabbos that this would cause was unfathomable. They immediately sent a delegation

to Radin to ask the Chofetz Chaim to endorse a meeting of rabbanim and askanim in Warsaw, the capital of Poland. Hopefully, they would prevail upon the government to rescind the decree. The Chofetz Chaim was already of considerable age at that point, and his hearing wasn’t very good. Additionally, his responses were typically cryptic and concise. After listening to their request, the Chofetz Chaim sighed deeply and nodded. “Yes,” he said. “The rabbanim should gather in Grodno.” The messengers thought the Chofetz Chaim hadn’t properly understood them, and they repeated their request: There was a need to assemble in Warsaw so they could lobby the government. Again the Chofetz Chaim respond-
ed, “The rabbanim should gather in Grodno.” “The factory is in Grodno, but the orders came from Warsaw!” the men explained again. But when the Chofetz Chaim repeated himself a third time, the delegation realized they had no choice but to follow orders. Rabbanim from all over Poland were called to Grodno. The Chofetz Chaim himself, despite his fragile state, strenuously made the trip. He asked that all the local Yidden come together, and with rousing speeches, the greatness of shemiras Shabbos was emphasized. “If this was decreed on Grodno,” the Chofetz Chaim said, “then the matter is obviously directly associated with the Yidden of Grodno. It won’t help to go to Warsaw; rather, the Yidden of Grodno should strengthen their level of shemiras Shabbos.” Next the Chofetz Chaim met with the factory owners. With a stirring message, the Chofetz Chaim implored them to keep strong. “In case the government will indeed require the factory to remain open on Shabbos, each of you should decide that you will not follow the command — even if it will mean completely closing down the plant.” Greatly inspired, the owners concurred. Then the Chofetz Chaim asked for the employees to gather and requested
Imagine... that they all agree not to work on Shabbos, even if they would find themselves with no income. Only after they agreed did the Chofetz Chaim instruct the community members to do a bit of hishtadlus. A small delegation was sent to Warsaw to implore the government to repeal their decision. Indeed, the Yidden of Grodno had done theirs — and their efforts paid off. The decree was rescinded. Clearly, the nations of the world cannot harm us Yidden, so long as we fortify ourselves between the walls of Yiddishkeit. So long as we keep connected to the dictates of Torah and the ways of our ancestors, we remain in a protected zone.

* * * * * This is what Bilam noticed when he saw the doorposts that did not face each other. Klal Yisroel was living walled within our traditions of tznius and protection. There was no way impurity could penetrate. Bilam conspiratorially wished to infiltrate the encampment by casting an ayin ra’ah, an evil eye, upon Klal Yisroel. The Kli Yakar comments that the entrances were offset to keep ayin hora out. And Bilam realized that as long as the Yidden were not allowing an opening for the evil eye to seep in and rule over them, he would not be able to look at them with a damaging ayin ra’ah either.
Did You Know? The nations of the world thought that Moshe’s power came from his speech, so they sent Bilam, who would also use his tongue, to combat the Yidden. Hashem then opened the donkey’s mouth to show the nations that even an animal can be a good orator, and that Moshe’s powerful speech referred only to the ko’ach hatefillah.

The Torah World Phenomenon Inspires Again
By Rabbi Eliezer Sandler
Post-Covid 19 Farher in Yerushalayim
The heartfelt words of admiration in the box below, followed an amazing ‘postCovid 19’ public farher in Yerushalayim conducted by these two Geonim, which covered the entire Shas in depth! “Such proficiency in Shas causes one’s reasoning not to be simply a personal opinion, rather true Talmudic reasoning. Thus, you will readily come to the halacha throughout the Torah.” Maran, the Rishon l’Tzion, was expressing his amazement to the avreichim geonim of the Kollel Shas Yiden, after the public farher from in-depth reasoning on Shas through to practical halacha, and he enjoyed their absolute mastery of each subject discussed.
Shas Yiden’s Remarkable Growth
In just the last seven years, Shas Yiden has grown from one Kollel in Beit Shemesh with just over a minyan of avreichim to five Kollelim! There are now 82 avreichim geonim. The kollelim are in Yerushalayim, Bnei Brak, Beit
Shemesh, Beitar and London, UK. The big motivator for the expansion is the Nasi of Shas Yiden, Maran Sar Hatorah, Hagaon Hagadol Rav Chaim Kanievsky, shlit”a. After testing the avreichim geonim for years, he gave his brocha to the founder, the Pozna Rov, Hagaon Harav Avrohom Eisen, shlit”a, to open further kollelim. Planning is underway for a sixth kollel to open by Kislev 5782 (December 2021).
A Unique Program
The idea of having each avreich submit to such a very demanding daily regimen and to complete Shas so thoroughly each year, is unique in the Torah world. They each conclude the entire Shas FIVE times a year (13,555 blatt) with every Rashi and Tosfos, all of which they learn to
master b’al peh! Acceptance is through a searching examination on 450 blatt and the ability and commitment to keep up with the pace of learning, namely, 7 days a week.
Public Farheren
The idea of public oral examinations of Shas Yiden has become very popular. This wondrous spectacle, for that is what it is, to see such incredible scholarship on display, has been repeated regularly, sometimes three or four times in a year. The frequency notwithstanding, every time such a test takes place, the spectacle reverberates throughout the Torah world and causes waves of amazement. This has an incredible impact on those who study Torah, and who are able to view the past farheren on the Shas Yiden website (www. shasyiden.com).
“You are all so proficient in Shas, Rashi and Tosfos, that your minds are Talmudic minds and your reasoning is Talmudic reasoning,” declared Maran Hagaon, the Rishon l’Tzion, Harav Yitzchak Yosef, shlit”a, to the avreichim geonim of Shas Yiden. “Such an assembly as this, is an incredible Kiddush Hashem, and hastens the Geulah,” added Maran Hagaon Harav Bezalel Rudinsky of Monsey, NY.

Some of the wide-ranging questions:
A short selection of questions referencing numerous sources from across Shas that led to extensive debate between the questioners and the avreichim geonim. QUESTIONS: •
How many implications are there if we say safek d’oraisa is l’kula implies being lenient d’oraisa or d’rabbanan?
•
It is known from the Brisker Rov that it is preferable if there is a support from the Torah, more than if we know the matter itself from real life, because the Torah verse is of greater reality than the object or matter itself. What are the supports for this statement from across Shas?
•
As well, when a Tanna says a reason in a Mishna, where does the Gemara still attempt to bring support statements from the Torah?
•
Is there a concept of arvus applicable to geirim?
•
Is there a chazaka for someone who says that he paid a debt within 30 days – because we say that there is a chazaka that one does not pay before the time limit of the loan?
•
Is the birth of twins considered an extra ‘plus’ for the father?
•
Can you bring a support for the Bach that rov ganvei Yisrael is not the simple meaning?
•
When may one tell an untruth, and under what conditions, and how many times and where is it mentioned in Shas?
•
What is the source in Shas for a Mora d’asra?

personally completes Bavli, Yerushalmi and the entire Shulchan Aruch every year. The two Geonim examiners questioned the avreichim geonim for well over an hour, and derived much satisfaction from the amazing mastery of every corner of Shas by the Shas Yiden. At the conclusion of the farher, Rav Rudinsky was all-American when he declared, “I was blown away by the Shas Yiden. This gathering is an incredible Kiddush Hashem - that Jews should know Shas in such a manner! Such a gathering hastens the Geulah (Redemption), and if I can be part of it, I feel a great zechus (merit).”
Impact Worldwide
Rav Rudinsky said that so many Jews throughout the world have been inspired and have increased their Torah learning since they heard about the phenomenon of the Shas Yiden Kollel network. “You have strengthened thousands of Jews in the mitzvah of acquiring Torah knowledge, to the point that ‘the words of Torah should
The gathering, as on the previous occasions, amazed all who attended, with a continuous flow of brilliant questions. However, on this occasion by way of a change, most of the questions were in-depth questions. The avreichim geonim had to draw examples from all over Shas to Halachic-Conceptual questions where the answers could not be derived from a superficial knowledge level of Shas. Not unexpectedly, the avreichim g e o n i m weighed and considered all the volumes of Shas, and delivered in depth reasoning while throwing out ideas from all over Shas, as well as from halachic sources and the latterday poskim. This was all to Avreichim geonim Shas Yiden the amazement
of the Rabbonim examining them, and who declared: “You also know Choshen Mishpat by heart?” This amazing rischa d’oraisa (tumultuous Torah discussion) closed with the heartfelt words of the Rishon l’Tzion, who told the story of how his late revered father, Maran Hagaon Ovadia Yosef, zt”l, who had mastered Shas at age 15, would encourage others to master Shas. He also spoke about those who support and ensure the vibrant continuity of Shas Yiden. “Shas Yiden is unique in the Torah world,” he declared. CHAPTER 13 RECAP: Shabbesai Tzvi advises and blesses each of his disciples and bids them to head home. There’s still a years-long battle ahead of him, he tells them, and he will summon each of his soldiers when the time for redemption comes.
W
hen Yechiel Hapolani returned to Smyrna in the limpid days of summer’s end, Esther and little Netzach were waiting for him on the wharf. That very day he told Esther about Shabbesai Tzvi. Esther was not at all taken aback by his revelation of his close relationship with Shabbesai Tzvi. She had suspected as much all along and was happy he had finally decided to take her into his confidence. Yechiel was encouraged by her reaction and began to speak about Shabbesai Tzvi in great detail. A feeling of awe gripped her as the full impact of Yechiel’s words sank in, but because of the many negative rumors she had heard, it took Yechiel several days to convince her fully of the greatness of Shabbesai Tzvi. Reports of Shabbesai Tzvi’s activities in Constantinople arrived in Smyrna weekly. Avraham Yechini was proving to be an able ambassador. Shabbesai Tzvi had been invited to speak in most of the shuls of Constantinople. Upon Avraham Yechini’s advice, he had selected only a few of the larger ones, including the famous Toledo Shul. Thousands flocked to hear him, and Shabbesai Tzvi was in his element.

He captivated and electrified his audiences. He spoke of the glorious times in store for the generation that would witness the Final Redemption, but he stopped short of proclaiming that the time was at hand. The people came away inspired, their appetites whetted for more. Darker reports began to arrive in the month of Cheshvan. Shabbesai Tzvi was acting strange again. One report related that Shabbesai Tzvi had celebrated all three major festivals during the week of Sukkos. Another report related that Shabbesai Tzvi was uttering the Shem Hameforash with alarming frequency. Constant friction was developing between Shabbesai Tzvi and the rabbis of Constantinople, and in early winter, there were rumors that Shabbesai Tzvi was no longer to be seen in the shuls and streets of the city. He had apparently gone into seclusion. One frosty evening, Yechiel was awakened by a knock on the door in the middle of the night. He looked out the window and saw a woman standing on his doorstep, a shawl wrapped around her head and shoulders. Puzzled, he went down to open the door. It was Esther Tzvi, Shabbesai Tzvi’s mother. “I’m sorry for disturbing you so
late at night, Yechiel,” she said. “Could you possibly come to my house right away?” “Of course. Is something the matter?” “Just come as soon as you can,” she said and disappeared into the night. Ten minutes later, Yechiel knocked at the door of the Tzvis’ house. Shabbesai Tzvi opened the door. The luminous glow of his face had been replaced by a dark, brooding expression. His eyes were troubled, his skin stretched tightly over the bone structure of his face. The hand he extended to Yechiel trembled in the air. “Come in, Yechiel Hapolani,” said Shabbesai Tzvi to his dumbfounded visitor. “I’ve been waiting for you.” He led the way into his small room at the front of the house. The window was open, and the white lace curtains fluttered in the wind. A single candle burned in a dish on the table, its flame flickering precariously. “It was good for a while in Constantinople,” he murmured, speaking more to himself than to Yechiel. “But just as I was beginning to gather the sparks of holiness in great numbers, the dark forces of the kelipah rose up with astonishing power. The heavens echoed with the thunder of our battle, but then the kelipah succeeded in turning the people of Constantinople against me. There was nothing left for me to do but withdraw.” Shabbesai Tzvi stared at the candle, hypnotized by the struggling flame.
“What must I do now? What must I do?” Yechiel was awestruck by the immense inner struggles of his master. He realized full well that the questions were not intended for him, and he remained silent. The concern on his face was all Shabbesai Tzvi needed of him. “Avraham Yechini tried to convince me to stay in Constantinople,” continued Shabbesai Tzvi. “He remains loyal and continues to work toward our goals. It is I who can no longer work, who is wounded and bleeding.” Shabbesai Tzvi walked to the window. In the distance, the ship on which he had arrived still rode at anchor in the harbor, its white sails furled around its spars. Shabbesai Tzvi turned away from the window, his face streaked with tears. “My Father in Heaven!” he cried. “Don’t forsake me! Wherever I go I’m persecuted and maligned. Don’t let my enemies in Smyrna drive me from my home. Let me stay here for a while in peace and recover from my wounds. My Father in Heaven, do not forsake me in my weakest hour.” Shabbesai Tzvi would remain in isolation in his father’s house in Smyrna for over three years, secluded in the room overlooking the bay. Yechiel took his family to Eretz Yisroel in the spring and cut Netzach’s hair in Meron on Lag Ba’omer, as Shabbesai Tzvi had instructed. When he returned, he took the boy to see Shabbesai Tzvi, but Shabbesai Tzvi refused to see him or anyone else. The following year, Esther Hapolani gave birth to a girl. Yechiel asked to see Shabbesai Tzvi to ask what name to give his daughter. Shabbesai Tzvi agreed to see him later that day and ordered him to bring Netzach. The long period of isolation had brought a deep pallor to Shabbesai Tzvi’s face, and his eyes had a haunted look. Little Netzach shrank back when he first saw Shabbesai Tzvi and clung to his father’s hand. “Do not be frightened, my precious child,” said Shabbesai Tzvi in a kind and gentle voice. “Come closer, and I will bless you.” Still, the little boy hung back. Yechiel lifted him up and brought him to Shabbesai Tzvi, but the boy continued to squirm in his father’s grip. But when Shabbesai Tzvi placed his hands on the boy’s head the squirming and fidgeting came to an abrupt halt. The boy remained perfectly still until Shabbesai Tzvi removed his hands. “Tell me your name, my precious child,” said Shabbesai Tzvi. “Netzach Hapolani.” “Good, good,” said Shabbesai Tzvi, obviously delighted that the child had used Hapolani, not Tomashov. “Yechiel, I would like to speak with your son for a few minutes in private.” “Of course,” said Yechiel, and he left the room. When he returned several minutes later, Netzach was sitting on Shabbesai Tzvi’s lap, a contented smile on his face. “Your son and I have reached an understanding, Yechiel,” said Shabbesai Tzvi. “Bring him here at the same time tomorrow, and leave him with me for the entire afternoon.” “Yes, Master. It will be my honor. There is also the matter of a name for my daughter.” “I have already given it thought. You are to name her Geulah.” The next two years passed blissfully in the Hapolani household. Yechiel was home nearly all the time, except for an occasional trip to the imperial palace, as in earlier times. Netzach spent a great deal

of time with Shabbesai Tzvi, and as a result, Yechiel came to see Shabbesai Tzvi quite often. The presence of the innocent little boy seemed to lift Shabbesai Tzvi’s spirits and fortify him for his battles with the forces of darkness that would inevitably fill the night. In the winter of 1661–1662, Chaim Tomashov, Yechiel’s grandfather, passed away. When he heard the tidings, Shabbesai Tzvi instructed Yechiel and his family to travel to Warsaw immediately. They arrived at Yankiv Tomashov’s house in Warsaw in time for Purim.
southern Galicia. They were en route to visit Aharon Surkis, Rebbetzin Brachah’s oldest son by her first marriage, and his wife, Yocheved, the only daughter of Moshe and Roiza Berliner. The young couple lived in Hamburg in northern Germany near the Danish border. They had been married for nearly four years, and they had a twoyear-old son named Ephraim, whom his grandparents had never seen. Rav Shloime also had been corresponding with several of the rabbis of Hamburg, and he wanted to meet them in person; letters did not generate dynamic debates as did face-to-face discussions. And so they had opted to undertake the rigorous journey. They had stopped in Warsaw on the way to visit Elisha Ringel and his family. On the day after their arrival in Warsaw, Rav Shloime Strasbourg visited Yankiv Tomashov to express his condolences and his shared sorrow over the passing of Chaim Tomashov. “I know that my father was a very old man, Rav Shloime,” said Yankiv as they sat in the garden in view of the Vistula River. “Not many people live to such an advanced age. But that does not make it any easier for me.” “Very true,” said Rav Shloime. “If anything, it makes it harder. After so many years with him, it becomes difficult to imagine life without him. Such a terrible void can never be filled.” Yankiv Tomashov nodded. The two men sat together, watching the rafts on the river, each lost in his own thoughts. “Rav Shloime,” said Yankiv, breaking the silence. “When you came to Warsaw nearly five years ago for the wedding of your son, do you recall remarking that I seemed distraught?” “Yes. I asked what was troubling you, but you declined to speak of it.” “Well, I would like to speak of it now,” said Yankiv. “Please do. I’d like to help you if I can.”
But what of the terrible transgressions Shabbesai Tzvi was reported to have committed in public? Were they just wild rumors? Was there no substance to them?

It was a sad Purim in the Tomashov household, but the loss drew father and son closer. For seven years, Yankiv and Yechiel had communicated solely through infrequent letters. Face to face at last, there was much to discuss. They sat together until the small hours of the night talking, trying to recapture the years that had slipped away. One night, Yechiel took a deep breath and told his father about Shabbesai Tzvi. Yankiv Tomashov had sensed Yechiel’s strong attachment to Shabbesai Tzvi for quite a while, and he had been very concerned. But Yechiel was no longer an impressionable boy. He was a mature, successful man in his early 30s, responsible for a wife and two children. Esther’s enthusiasm also made an impression on Yankiv. Perhaps Shabbesai Tzvi was indeed Moshiach, thought Yankiv. If he was, then his son was indeed fortunate to have such a close relationship with him. But what of the terrible transgressions Shabbesai Tzvi was reported to have committed in public? Were they just wild rumors? Was there no substance to them? Shortly after Pesach, Rav Shloime and Rebbetzin Brachah Strasbourg arrived in Warsaw from Pulichev in

Cuomo to Blame for High Number of Nursing Home Deaths, Says Report It was another blow to Governor Andrew Cuomo when a 242-page New York State Bar Association report said that his controversial nursing home orders in the early days of COVID-19 led to an untold number of deaths. The New York Post reported that Cuomo’s insistence that 6,326 COVID-positive patients be admitted to nursing homes from March 25 through May 10 was deadly, despite the governor’s claims to the contrary. The report also found that Cuomo should have canceled his directive weeks before he actually did, noting that COVID-19 patients could have been admitted to one of the dedicated hospitals — one which had been set up at the Javits Center and the other aboard the USNS Comfort, a naval ship sent to New York City by President Donald Trump, both of which were barely used. “Cuomo lit the match and the nursing homes were the kerosene,” said Tracy Alvino, whose father died in a Long Island nursing home. “It was a failure at every level. The nursing homes were unable to protect nursing home patients after accepting COVID-19 patients.” A spokesperson for the Department of Health dismissed the report as nothing more than “politicians pushing their political agendas and personal vendettas.” But Queens Assemblyman Ron Kim, who lost an uncle to COVID-19 and has been the target of Cuomo’s wrath after criticizing the governor, strongly disagreed. “The window of being truthful and asking for forgiveness is gone,” said Kim. “I think there was a small window early on where they could have admitted their mistake and asked for forgiveness, but now they have tripled down on their lies amid coverups, where if they admit the truth they admit to acting

criminally.” Cuomo remains the focus of multiple investigations probing his nursing home policies, his $5.1 million pandemic memoir, allegations of improper behavior and claims of deliberate underreporting of nursing home deaths to avoid scrutiny. He is also the subject of an impeachment investigation being conducted by the state’s Assembly Judiciary Committee. Even a statewide fireworks celebration to mark the state’s lifting of coronavirus restrictions brought gubernatorial criticism, with New York’s Republican chairman Nick Langworthy calling the spectacular shows a tactic to divert criticism and cast Cuomo in a good light. “This is not Cuomo’s moment to celebrate,” said Langworthy. “This is a time we should celebrate modern medicine, the people who worked on the front lines every day and the people who put their own lives in harm’s way.” Langworthy credited Mayor Bill de Blasio for his decision to plan a ticker tape parade in Manhattan next month to honor frontline and essential workers. By contrast, Cuomo announced his fireworks celebration just hours before they were slated to begin statewide. “It’s a way for Cuomo to celebrate himself and get media reports to celebrate the administration,” said Langworthy.
Speed Bumps Return to 21st Avenue After a year’s worth of complaints from area residents and elected officials, the New York City Department of Transportation has installed speed bumps on 21st Avenue, slowing down local traffic in order to make the street safer for everyone. Boro Park 24 reported that a four-block stretch of 21st Avenue running between 53rd and 57th streets actually had speed bumps in the roadway to prevent cars from racing down the avenue. But those bumps were removed last year when the avenue was repaved, and they were never replaced, creating a dangerous situation for drivers, pedestrians and the many children who live in the area. “Ever since I’ve been elected to the New York State Assembly, we’ve heard complaints from neighbors about cars speeding down 21st Avenue,” said Eichenstein. The speed bumps were reinstalled on June 17. Eichenstein and City Councilman Kalman Yeger publicly thanked DOT workers for the road improvements, as several children on scooters and Segways zipped around behind them. “We need to slow down,” said Yeger. “Look around us, and see all the kids on their bikes and scooters who are just enjoying their streets. We need to remember that our kids come first, so please, slow down, and if you don’t remember to slow down, the 21st Avenue speed bumps will remind you [to do so].”
Construction Begins on Brooklyn Bridge Dedicated Bike Lane Cyclists will have good news to look forward to on the Brooklyn Bridge as the city begins turning one lane of the span into a twoway, bike-only lane, a move that is none too popular with drivers. Construction of the new lane began on Monday and will have concrete barriers and fencing built around the iconic bridge’s innermost Manhattan-bound lane to protect bikers from passing traffic. The change is part of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Bridges for the People initiative that is addressing the cycling surge that overtook the city during the pandemic as many decided to forego using mass transit. While the move will most certainly increase traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge, the mayor stubbornly insisted that it would actually provide greater access to the city, noting that 400,000 New Yorkers would cross the span daily before trolley service across the bridge was ended in 1950. “Completely replacing trolleys with car lanes reduced the number of daily bridge users by more than half,” said de Blasio. “By adding new protected bike lanes on the bridge, we will finally begin to re-balance that equation, supporting more sustainable transportation for decades to come.” But New York Magazine’s Curbed section was critical of the bike lanes, noting that at just eight feet wide, it would barely allow two bikes to pass each other. A bike path on the Manhattan bridge actually measures ten feet across, and according to StreetsblogNYC, the Queensboro Bridge will lose two full car lanes when two of its two outer lanes will be transformed into bike lanes sometime next year. Construction on the bridge’s bike lane is expected to continue through early fall.

CHAPTER THIRTEEN RECAP: Another
Arab visits Reb Elazar’s house and tries to convince him to sell it. Nechemiah tells Osher not to talk to these Arabs. Feeling stuck and depressed about her life, Ariella loses her voice once again. Osher reminisces about Nosson’s sudden passing so soon after he’d married Ariella, and how badly it affected Ariella.

“R
einess…” Mordechai Reiness knitted his brows. “Which Reiness?” “His first name is Elazar. From Acco. Or Haifa, actually.” Yigal Erenbaum looked ahead as he gripped the wheel. He regularly gave people rides on his way home; he knew it was a great chesed and was happy to help out. And now, after this passenger got in and thanked him effusively, Yigal’s attention was piqued when he heard that the man’s name was Reiness. “Elazar Reiness? Oh, you mean my cousin. We were actually just talking about him recently.” “He’s your cousin?” “Yes, but we’re not the same age at all. He’s about thirty years older than me. His father was much older than my father.” “And what does he have there in Acco? A yeshivah? A youth hostel?” “I have no idea.” Mordechai shrugged. “I just know that my brother was very surprised when he moved back to Acco.” “Back?” “Yes, they lived there when he was a child. My older brothers still remember one single, historic visit our family made there.” “So why did he move back?” “That’s exactly the question my brother was wondering about,” Mordechai explained. “And what’s even stranger is that he refuses to sell the old house.” Yigal smiled. “Sounds like there’s a Pandora’s box here,” he said. “Why so mysterious?”

Mordechai chuckled and opened the car door. “I don’t know. Whatever it is, it’s probably not an inheritance from our grandfather, so I’m not all that curious about it.” “And the man himself…” Osher’s father bit his bottom lip. “Your cousin… what is he? Mainstream chareidi?” “Sure, chareidi, yes. Mainstream? I don’t know. Our family is very big, and I told you, he’s not really my age, so I don’t know him that well. He has a nice family, as far as I know, and he’s certainly a very unique person if he’s suddenly moving to Acco without any obvious reason…” “And he seems to have attracted a group of young men who look up to him.” “Oh, really?” “Really,” Yigal Erenbaum said.
the house that had such a loud ring, the sound even sliced through the heavy steel door. I opened the door and stood near the ringing phone, deliberating whether to answer the call or not. I did not want the caller — no matter who it was — to hear my voice. Finally I picked up, but I didn’t say anything. I just coughed into the receiver. “Hello?” I stayed quiet and bit down hard on the tip of my thumb. It hurt, but I didn’t pay it any attention.
think it was Mommy. “You can’t,” I said tersely, dragging out my words like a shark’s tail. “What?” My fist was apparently doing a good job at muffling my words. “You can’t.” “When can I speak to him?” she asked, polite as ever. “Who said he’s here?” “I have my assumptions.” “I have no idea what your assumptions are, madam,” I said with my new drawl. “Besides, our students don’t waste time on phone calls.” I hung up. The phone didn’t ring again, and I went to sit down on my bed. I was hungry, and I knew I needed to eat. I knew also that I needed to go to Reb Elazar’s shiur, and that if I didn’t, he would come up to me soon. But I had no appetite. I don’t care. Let him come up. I won’t tell him what sent my appetite packing. But what if Ariella called when he was here? I had to go downstairs. Not that it would take the problem away forever. Because what if Ariella, or Tatty, or Mommy, called at a different time, when Shlomo would be there and would pick up the phone? Or Nechemiah? Or Reb Elazar? Or his wife, if she happened to be home? I got up from my bed and went over to the phone. my first day here, Reb Elazar said I could use the phone whenever I needed to at no charge. I don’t know if they have a free line or a cheap plan, or if it’s just another thing that he invests in us, but until now, I’d hardly used it. Like the previous times, I blocked the call, and then dialed. Ariella answered almost immediately. Based on the background noise, it sounded like she was at our parents’ house. Not that I heard my father — he was at work at this hour — but I think I heard Mommy, and also that funny squeak that the kitchen door makes. “Ariella?” I began. “Osher! How are you?”
It was Ariella. Oy, she should live and be well, but...what a nuisance!
Osher When I got up in the morning, it was late. Shlomo’s and Nechemiah’s beds were empty, and I wondered whether I’d make it in time for our minyan in the room off the carpentry shop. Judging by the silence, the house was empty. Everyone must have left, even the Rav’s wife. I closed the door behind me and went downstairs. My head was heavy with exhaustion. Truthfully, I felt like davening in the house, but I still went to find a minyan. I walked and walked until I got to Louis IX Street. There, in the mix of Jewish and Arab homes, I know how to find Rav Alkabetz’s Sefardic minyan. When I got back, everyone was eating breakfast. I heard the noise from behind the carpentry shop. I went upstairs to put away my tefillin and to see whether Nechemiah had gotten back into Yeruchem’s bed, but he wasn’t there anymore. His mother must have cleared off his bed in their part of the house. Or maybe he felt well enough to join the boys for breakfast. Then the Reinesses’ phone rang. It was a big, black device near the door to

“Hello? Is this the Reiness family?” I bit my thumb even harder and still didn’t answer. It was Ariella. Oy, she should live and be well, but…what a nuisance! Why are you chasing me, Ariella? Didn’t you get the message that I want a new place, with a fresh start? I don’t want to answer you. I don’t want to! I put the receiver back down in the cradle and leaned against the wall. My appetite was gone now. I didn’t want to go down to breakfast or to the carpentry shop. I didn’t want to go anywhere. I just stood there for three long minutes and glared at the black telephone. How did they know I was here? How had they tracked me down? Did it have to do with the lemonade, or was that not from her at all? The phone rang again. I shoved a fist into my mouth and answered the phone angrily. “Hello? Is this the Reiness residence?” Yes, it was definitely her again. “Yes,” I mumbled through my fist. “Can I speak to Osher Erenbaum?” “Who?” “Asher Erenbaum.” I guess she wasn’t sure whether or not they used my official name here. I heard someone say something in the background; I

“Baruch Hashem. Ariella…” “Yes?” “Why are you calling all kinds of places to find out about me?” “Why? Because I —” I didn’t let her finish the sentence. “Don’t do it anymore.” “I need to —” I cut her off again. “If you call that place —” I didn’t want to say “here,” or she would realize that she’d reached the right place “— or try to visit, you’ll just make me go farther away.” “Why sh —” This time I cut her off in the rudest way possible: I just hung up the phone. Panting breathlessly, as if I’d just run to and from the beach five times, I went downstairs, and almost collided with Reb Elazar. “Oh, Osher!” he said with that warm smile. “How are you? We missed you this morning.” I wanted to tell him that no one misses me, and that I’m just a black sheep, but suddenly I remembered that it wasn’t really true. After all, Mommy had made Ariella call me this morning.

***** They looked at one another. “That doesn’t sound good.” Ariella repeated the same sentiment she kept saying in ten different variations. Her mother didn’t move. “Right,” she said after a moment. “Not very good. So…” She was quiet. “What?” Ariella picked up a pink towel from the pile and folded it. “What can we do? To say that I’m at a loss does not even describe the way I feel. Look, in the worst case, we can always send the police over there to ask why they didn’t let a minor speak to his parents. But we can only take such a drastic step if we think he’s in real danger.” “That’s right, because if by chance the weirdo who answered the phone is just someone else, and that is not the approach of the directors there, and it is a good place for Osher,” her daughter took a deep breath and picked up a striped towel, the last one in the pile, “then to actively cause Osher to leave this place would be a big mistake.” “But what if it’s not a good place for him?” Ariella looked at the towel she was holding. “We need to find out,” she said. “We really need to look into this.” “So far, the impression we got wasn’t great,” her mother remarked. “We haven’t found a single person who knows this man, a single person who can give a warm recommendation for him. Even his cousin who spoke to Tatty said he hardly knows him.” “It’s possible that that’s true.” “Of course, but that does not change the fact that we didn’t hear anything reassuring from even a single person!” Irit Erenbaum looked down at the stack of towels. “Do you think they forced him to call us after your call? Do you think that’s the situation?”

“A good question.” Ariella bit her lip. “How can we find out more?” It was more of a rhetorical question than a practical one, but Ariella actually had a ready answer. “Maybe I’ll go there,” she suggested. “Go? To Acco? You? To Osher?” “Yes. Yes. Yes.” Ariella smiled. “And once no. I won’t go to see Osher, because I’m afraid he won’t be very happy to see me, and if he disappears again, it will be even more complicated. You remember how he didn’t come home for Shabbos during the short time he was in that yeshivah in Petach Tikvah?” “When you went to Toby Greenwald?” “Yes. And he met me, and was sure I’d come to speak to his maggid shiur, or something like that…” She smiled again, wryly this time. “So I don’t think it’s a good idea for him to meet me. But I would go just to nose around a bit and see what kind of people the Reinesses are and what kind of place it is. I’m sure I can learn something there.” “I think it’s better if we ask someone else to do it.” Irit was thoughtful. “What will happen if he does see you?” She lowered her eyes to the pile of linen waiting to be folded, and then looked again at her daughter. “I’m afraid of my son. No, I’m afraid for him. Afraid that he will go too far.” “I’ll be careful,” Ariella said with her trademark confidence. “And I think that before anything, I should probably meet the renowned Mrs. Reiness and get to know her. That’s a good place to start.” “What do you mean, renowned?” “Well, she’s a renowned speech therapist,” her daughter clarified. “Why would you go see her? As someone who needs some type of therapy?” “Yes, to help me with my hoarseness. Don’t you think I need it?” “You do,” her mother replied, “although it’s definitely gotten better.” “Till next time.” “That’s right. But what do you mean by saying that it’s a good place to start? What will you do afterward? How much time are you planning to be there?” “A few days.” “Days?” “Yes. I don’t think one morning will be enough for me.” “How many days will you need?” Her mother sounded nervous. “I don’t think that the sea and the beach will be able to enthrall me so much that I’ll want to settle there.” She laughed. “You have nothing to worry about, Mommy. You know I’m practical, and even though Acco is a pretty city — or so I’ve heard — beautiful waves and an ancient shoreline are not going to help me decide where to live.” “But where will you stay?” “I’m sure I can find a place for a night or two.” Ariella’s smile faltered. “And honestly, Mommy, I feel like I need it. I need to get away a bit, for a change of scenery.” She glanced around. “I want to go for myself no less than for Osher.”

When Antoine Yates came to the emergency room to be treated for his wound, he said he’d been bitten by a pit bull. But the doctors were suspicious. The gashes in his arm and leg seemed to have come from a much bigger animal. After being alerted by the doctors, police officers investigated Yates’ apartment in Harlem, New York. They lowered a camera through a bedroom window on the fifth floor and found a fullsize tiger inside. Soon enough, they heard its distinctive roar.
One officer rappelled down the side of the building to shoot a tranquilizer through the window of the apartment. When it struck, the tiger charged against the window and it shattered. Then the tranquilizer took effect, and the big cat, carried on a tarp by officers, was safely removed from the apartment. After recovering from his injury, Yates served three months on Rikers Island for reckless endangerment and possession of a wild animal. His tiger, which he had named Ming, was transferred to a sanctuary named Noah’s Ark in Berlin, Ohio, where it died a natural death in 2019. Yates is far from only American who’s owned a wild animal. Today, thousands of exotic animals are kept as pets in the United States, including tigers, lions, kangaroos, bears and more. There are an estimated 5,000 captive tigers in the U.S., only 6% of which live in zoos or other accredited facilities. In some states there are no laws against possession of wild animals, and in others, many people simply break the law. urchasing a wild animal is easy. Besides being available online, there are auctions where you can buy a cougar cub, snakes or an exotic monkey for the right price. And when the animals are small, they’re cute, lovable, and not at all difficult to care for.
But these animals grow up quickly. Yates bought Ming as a six-week-old cub and fed him bottles at first. Soon enough, though, his pet began eating meat. Yates needed to buy 20 pounds of chicken parts daily to keep up with his pet, which soon grew to its full, 425-pound weight. Of course, this was a huge expense. Keeping wild animals as pets involves additional hardships. Most wild animal owners suffer social isolation, because very few people will visit a friend who has a tiger for company. And chances are the pet owner won’t have time to socialize, either, because taking care of a wild animal, or many wild animals, can be a 24/7 occupation. Of course, there’s also the danger involved, like Yates’ experience proved. The pets get used to their human owners, but predators
remain predators. And when their instincts come to the fore, their caretakers can become prey in an instant. And this is beside the risk of them contracting zoonotic diseases, which are diseases found in wild animals that may be dangerous for their humans around them. But apparently, all of these risks don’t stop people from keeping wild pets. One man in Ohio, for instance, owned a large bear, and when people urged the owner to place the bear in a sanctuary after it bit off his finger, he still refused. Then there’s the philosophy that Zuzana Kukol follows. She owns twelve big cats — including bobcats, lions and an ocelot — and says she would rather be killed by a lion than a drunk driver! And the danger of keeping wild animals doesn’t end in the owner’s home. The worst example of this was the Zanesville incident in 2011. Terry Thompson, from Zanesville, Ohio, owned over 50 wild animals including many tigers and lions. One day, he released them all from their cages. Soon the animals were cutting through traffic and neighboring backyards, and chaos reigned in the city. With no recourse, the police ended up killing the animals. After this terrible incident, Ohio passed laws to regulate wild animal ownership.
So why would anyone want to own a wild pet, despite the risks and exorbitant expense involved?

What happens to illegal animal owners and traders if and when they are caught? Christopher Casacci, from Amherst, New York, sold African cats like desert lynx and servals from the basement of his home for thousands of dollars each. While he didn’t have a license, he told his business contacts otherwise. At one point, he contacted an exotic cat dealer to purchase more cats, and when she asked whether he was doing business legally, he lied and said that he was. But she wasn’t so sure. She contacted the USDA, the agency in charge of licensing, to verify whether Casacci had a license. They immediately dispatched an inspector to see what was going on in Casacci’s home. The inspector found eight kittens in the man’s house, all of which were suffering from malnutrition and other diseases.

own an alligator! It’s also an exciting, new experience. Owners find it thrilling that they’ve managed to “domesticate” an animal that people consider wild. Of course, when those wild instincts kick in, the person who thinks he has a domesticated pet may be in for a very painful realization of the truth. Some of these animal keepers don’t think about the longterm effects when they buy an adorable tiger cub. They buy a cute baby animal on impulse, and then often can’t handle
in his home, including snakes, monkeys, bears and his favorite: wolves. The snakes would wrap themselves around his lampposts, and the exotic rhesus monkeys would jump from couch to table. Harrison was a police officer. After a long day of chasing criminals, he loved coming home to his wolves, who would howl and lick him in greeting. And Harrison would howl back. He enjoyed being home with his animals and spending
High-Profile Pets the expense or care for their animal properly once it grows up. There are also those who claim to have rational reasons for owning a wild animal. Some of the species for sale are endangered, so owners feel that they are helping the species survive by taking care of them in captivity. Of course, this argument doesn’t hold water; a wild pet that has been raised by a human being cannot survive in the wild, so there’s no way caring for pets can help stop extinction. Tim Harrison was one such example. He had an entire menagerie of animals

Wild pets may be expensive and difficult to care for. But those aren’t reasons that would stop a president or a prime minister from owning a wild animal. Indeed, presidents of the United States have owned all kinds of wild pets. Did you ever hear of the alligator that John Quincy Adams is rumored to have kept in a bathtub in the White House? How about the tiny hippo under Calvin Coolidge’s reign? There were even lions, snakes and bears who found their home in the presidential residence. Apparently, a tiger was also the perfect birthday present for Russian president Vladimir Putin. The tiger cub he received for his 56th birthday got tender loving care from the fierce world leader, though he did end up giving the cub to a zoo. Nevertheless, he still sent her special tiger presents like meat cake every now and then. How touching. Apparently, owning a lion is part and parcel of being the crown prince of Dubai. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed personally feeds his pet lion Moochi his meat every day, and the two royals enjoy spending time in each other’s company. Consequently, anyone in Dubai as rich and bored as the prince also owns a wild pet, the ultimate status symbol in the country.
time with them. He had a deep love for all animals, and having so many under his roof was a dream come true. It was his love for the animals that eventually caused him to give them up, though. After owning wild animals for decades, he took a trip to Africa. He drove through the grasslands and watched lions in their natural habitat, as well as elephants and giraffes that were free to roam. He saw how well the animals interacted with their natural environment, and the quarters of his collection of animals back home suddenly seemed like a jail of which he was the warden. When Harrison returned home, he slowly began giving up his pets to sanctuaries. It took time, but today he no longer owns any exotic pets. He also works to rescue other wild animals being kept as pets through an organization he helped found called Outreach for Animals. Some menageries, or exotic pet collections, are perfectly legal. One such collection is owned by Leslie Ann Rush
of Orlando, Florida. Rush lives on a seven-acre farm with plenty of room for her kangaroos, lemurs, deer and more to live, play and romp. Her farm is legal, as she has all the necessary permits. But she shares many other aspects of her exotic animal ownership with those doing it illegally. For one, the cost of feeding the animals remains astronomical, even though her pets don’t need thousands of pounds of fresh meat a day. Buying the grain, fruits and vegetables that her pets consume in such quantities is still very expensive. In terms of contact with other people, Rush is so busy caring for her pets that she has no time for almost anything else. Like most other exotic pet owners, this doesn’t bother her; it’s what she wants to do. As of now, there’s no one stopping her. But some organizations would like a federal law to be passed. If that happens, Rush, despite her current legal status, may have to give up her animals too.

It's your mitzvah. Earn your blessing.
Everyone knows that a married Jewish woman must cover her hair. But recent trends are making it obvious that many people don’t know one of the basic premises of the mitzvah: To lessen attraction. Sadly, many current wigs don’t meet this requirement. They attract attention – the opposite of what a head covering should do. Lace wigs, in particular, take this attraction to a new level. Dozens of Rabbonim f r om man y c ommun i t i e s have just issued a clear psak against the wigs. Their cry is unanimous. Lace front and top wigs are assur. The Rabbonim bless those who heed their call, with nachas and great brachah. Heed Daas Torah. Earn your blessing. Despite coming into frequent contact with humans, black bears rarely attack people. Bears are generally passive and timid; they don’t wish to get into a fight. When they see a human, their natural instinct is to turn around and leave. But sometimes, they do become aggressive — with deadly results in rare circumstances (an average of less than one per year in the U.S.). A large number of bear attacks are triggered when the animal is surprised by the sudden appearance of humans, mostly hunters. This causes them to act out aggressively. Other attacks involve the bear feeling that her cubs are under threat, or a hungry bear fearing that a person is taking away its food. And yes, some do appear predatory. In New York, there have been only a handful of bear injuries in the last three decades, as well as one infant fatality, where the exact circumstances are still not fully understood. To the extent there is a concern, there are simple tactics

for avoiding such encounters. Bear safety protocols come in two distinct sets of rules and advice. The first relates to bears intruding into residential areas, while the second involves humans who enter the animal’s natural habitat, such as during a hike or camping trip. Let’s have a look at the former. (See sidebar for bear safety in the wild.) It is estimated that there are between 6,000 to 8,000 black bears in New York State, with about a third inhabiting the Catskills region. According to the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation, there has been an increase in bear sightings in semi-rural environments, agricultural areas, and even urban centers on occasion. The increase can be attributed to a combination of factors, including growing bear populations. It should be noted that before New York was settled by Europeans, the state was largely forested and bears roamed everywhere. Over time
A bear showing up in a residential area strikes terror in almost everyone — most notably, in the bears themselves. With many readers spending their summer in wooded areas, we review Bear Safety 101.
their ranks diminished, but they started to rise again when the government regulated hunting. Today, there are designated hunting seasons where the state allows and even encourages the hunting of bears to keep their population in check. A typical season sees between 1,000 and 2,000 New York bears killed by hunters. According to experts, many of the bears seen around the state are just harmlessly passing through residential areas. Others are young cubs whose mother has kicked them out to make place for their younger siblings, and they are out on their own trying to establish their new home ranges. Bears have a keen sense of smell and are often lured toward residential areas by the scent of food. If they are left alone and aren’t fed, they will generally continue on their merry way. food, they are more likely to return — or, even worse, begin associating humans with food, potentially leading to disastrous results. If a bear refuses to leave a site or returns again, a 911 call will bring animal control experts to the scene. While a bear can be tranquilized and relocated, this process can wound the animal badly and generally leads to them continuing their bad behavior elsewhere. One method utilized by DEC (Department of Environmental Conservation) staff is to lure the bear into a trap and tranquilize it safely. After the bear wakes up, agents release it and shoot it with a rubber bullet to provide negative reinforcement. When encountering a bear that doesn’t leave quickly on its own, it is best to talk forcefully, make loud noises (clapping, banging on pans and the like) and wave with the arms. This signals to the bear that you are not his prey and makes you seem more intimidating. It is imperative to avoid panicked shrieking — and never turn to run away. Bears run approximately 30 mph, so outrunning them is not possible. The same goes for climbing a tree, at which they are also better than us. On the rare occasions that a bear does attack, the advice is to vigorously fight back with sticks, rocks, fists or feet. The supposed suggestion to “play dead” seldom works when attacked by a black bear (grizzly bears are different in this regard). Many hikers carry bear spray with them, an effective form of pepper spray that does very well to turn bears away. Since bears have little reason other than food to stick around, those living near wooded areas should not leave food outside, should keep garbage cans clean and locked, and should scrape down grill and grease traps after use. Most importantly, never approach or initiate contact with a bear, and certainly do not intentionally feed them. This is not only subject to fines or imprisonment, but also puts the entire neighborhood at increased risk.
Bearing Down on Preventable Wildfires When discussing bear safety, it is ironic to note that a fictional bear character is actually among the most iconic safety symbols in the United States, as the face of a massive public awareness campaign. We are referring to Smokey Bear, the quirky, shovel-wielding, hat-wearing bear educating the public on wildfire prevention. Born in 1944, the lecturing bear was used by the U.S. Forest Service and other agencies to tell Americans that proper care prevents forest fires from breaking out. Based on studies showing that 90% of wildfires are caused by humans, the message was that people can prevent nine out of ten such fires. Smokey was used in voice ads, print media, commercials, outdoor signs, and digital PSAs. There have also been Smokey stamps, memorabilia, dolls and much more. According to the Forest Service, he was named Smokey Bear after “Smokey” Joe Martin, who had been the Assistant Chief of the New York City Fire Department and had suffered significant burns in a fire. A few years later, a real-life Smokey became the symbol of this campaign after the young cub suffered burns in a New Mexico wildfire. For the rest of his life, he lived as a celebrity at the National Zoo. Smokey was the recipient of so many children’s letters that he eventually got his very own ZIP code, which is still in use today. It is hard to measure the precise impact of Smokey Bear, but the number of wildfires has indeed decreased over the decades, while awareness over human responsibility for preventing wildfires has greatly increased. And for that, Smokey’s fellow bear friends are surely grateful.

Ensuring Safe Encounters The following are some simple tips for hikers and campers: • Use lightweight and dehydrated foods, which leave less of a smell. Plan all meals to avoid leftovers, and never leave garbage out. • Don’t sleep near where cooking took place, and change your clothes before heading to bed. Bears have an excellent sense of smell and might assume you have — or are — food for them. • All unused food should be placed in bear-resistant canisters or hung high from a tree in a bag using a rope (a simple method is to throw the bag over a tree branch and then pull it down by rope the next morning). • Never surprise a bear. Make sure they see you the entire time. • Hike in groups when possible. Make noise during hiking, whether it’s singing, talking loudly or clapping every so often so that bears are not suddenly surprised by your presence. • Carry bear spray and keep it holstered where you can access it immediately. • Don’t approach a mama bear with her cubs. They are very protective and can react dangerously. • Never corner a bear or leave him without an escape route. A hemmed-in bear is a desperate animal. • Whatever the circumstances, never turn or run away, as that will trigger a chase response. Slowly back away while facing them, and make your presence known.

In the quiet residential suburb of Terenure, Dublin, is the very last Orthodox shul in the city — and in the entire Republic of Ireland. Ireland has been home to a Jewish community since Portuguese Jews fleeing the Inquisition settled there in 1660, so this remaining shul represents a rich past. When we vacationed in Dublin some twenty summers ago, my sons and I joined the small daily minyan at Terenure’s Dublin Hebrew Congregation. Wherever a traveling Jew can

find a shul to pray in, he feels welcome, and this city was no exception. We loved the lilting Irish accents that seemed to caress the familiar words of davening, and were enthralled by the unique atmosphere of a tiny but loyal community. We’d rented a vacation home in the Dundrum section of this vibrant capital city and spent some happy days sightseeing. Before each day’s tour, we stopped for Shacharis in the Terenure shul. On Friday afternoon, we checked out the
route carefully as we drove to shul and parked outside. After a warm, intimate, Kabbalas Shabbos and Maariv, the men present shook hands, wished each other good Shabbos, and headed out down the streets. Although the community had made Shabbos at an early zman, the sky was now beginning to darken. The twenty minutes of driving time meant that we had an hour’s walk through the city streets, and we set off, soon parting from the other shul-goers. The main roads we’d chosen featured bars, restaurants and some traditional Irish pubs. On we walked, my sons and myself, a total of four black-hatted, bearded men. At one point, the buildings suddenly cleared, and we passed a large site earmarked for development. It had obviously been left empty for a while, for the caravans and campfires of a Romany encampment had made the place their own. As we walked, smells of outdoor cooking and the sound of children’s rough play wafted across into the road. We were almost past the site when a round missile hit the small of my back. It stung, and I turned around. A rotten apple lay behind me on the ground. Across the encampment, a darkskinned child gestured with his hands, and I thought I
heard the word “Jew!” That night, we made Kiddush and sat around the table, eating our chicken-flavored instant soup and the chicken and kugel that we’d brought along. We sang zemiros and spoke about cheeky gypsy boys with catapults, about being a Jew in a foreign city, and if there was any country, however out of the way, that could really be a good home for Jews. We also decided that changing our route, in an unfamiliar city when we didn’t have access to a map because of Shabbos, seemed too risky. None of us wanted to pass the gypsies again, but there didn’t seem to be an alternative. At 8:15 on Shabbos morning, we were ready to leave for shul. My wife had decided that she would rather join us for davening than stay home alone for four hours, but all of us felt nervous as we walked down toward the main road. Some of the charm of the foreign city seemed to have worn off. Would our assailant of the previous evening be expecting us to pass again? We had barely left our street when we noticed a large, fawncolored dog walking alongside us. Doggie was clean and wellgroomed, and clearly not a stray. I’m no expert on breeds, but his drooping ears and solemn face suggested a Labrador. Keeping close to us, he walked at a calm and steady pace, without a bark or any sound at all. None of us are animallovers, and so we unanimously decided to cross the road. Doggie followed. When we turned the corner, he turned, too — and when we quickened our pace, he loped along effortlessly. We waited at traffic lights and crossed roads together, and we passed the pubs and the gypsy encampment with a large and solid guard dog right next to us. For three miles, Doggie walked, from Dundrum to Terenure. We came nearer to the shul, and nodded to a couple of Jewish faces we recognized. “Good morning,” said the security guard. “Is this your dog?” “No,” I said. “But he’s been our escort from Dundrum this morning.” The man raised his eyebrows in friendly surprise as we passed through the gate. And the strange dog sat down calmly on the sidewalk outside the only shul left in Ireland, mission accomplished.

HERE’S WHAT OUR AMAZING PARTICIPANT BASE HAS TO SAY:
Thank you so much for this contest! It made my supper planning so much simpler, both by providing a menu, and by offering guidance on the side! ---------------------------------I loved the recipes and clipped many of them so I can make them over and over again! This was such a help as I reach the end of shanah rishonah! ---------------------------------Please keep these simple recipes coming. Having one less menu to plan was so helpful! ---------------------------------Thank you for this creative cooking contest. It was simple, doable, yet delicious all at once! ----------------------------------
send me soups and sides to help out, but still, it too difficult. I could not find the push to start. Then she suggested that I do it with a friend — cook together and then divide the food. I did it twice, and we really had a great time, and after that I continued cooking on my own. For me, that was the push that helped me start. Lucky newlyweds of this year! They have such a fantastic contest from the The Boro Park View to get them started. I wish I would’ve had it too! Either way, I enjoyed a bunch of delicious and easy recipes and great new cooking tips. So, thank you. Thank you for such an amazing contest, and above all, thank you for your wonderful publication! ----------------------------------
Once a week the past four weeks there was a day that was stressfree because The Boro Park View planned my supper! I especially liked that you featured a full menu on one page. The recipes were not too complicated and were really delicious.
I completed all four recipe roundups. Everything was really delicious and so easy to make! Even my husband loved all of it, and he’s a pretty picky eater. You can be sure that these recipes will stay in my cooking repertoire!
----------------------------------
----------------------------------
I was the kind of kid who loved cooking, and I was sure that I would be making supper on my own shortly after I was married. When it came to it, however, I kept pushing it off. It just seemed impossible to get a full meal to the table (in addition to all of my housing responsibilities!).
Great contest! This was challenging, but really made me feel productive. Everything I made was delicious, even for my picky husband! I did find that the onions in the split pea soup needed to be sauteed, though.
The COVID-19 lockdown happened when I was married for about three months. My mother really pushed me to start cooking at that point since I was home and had the time. She offered to
---------------------------------This was fun! I definitely want to clip some of these recipes for easy, delicious suppers! (Some of the pictures were a bit misleading, but we had fun trying to make our plates look a bit
more elegant and exciting.) ---------------------------------Thank you so much! I loved this contest because I got a full menu every week, so masterfully put together and not too complicated! I will definitely reuse these recipes. ---------------------------------I’ve been married for six months, and my parents and in-laws have been praising this contest. Because of it, I now cook supper on my own once a week. ---------------------------------Thank you so much for this contest! I was so excited when I first saw this, because although my cooking is pretty okay, I still get overwhelmed with planning what to cook and actually cooking what I planned. Here everything was so clearly planned out, down to the grocery list! The “Organizing the Time” was also extremely helpful. The best part was how excited my husband was with the whole thing! Every night he wanted to know: “Is tonight a View supper night?” Everything was scrumptious and simple to make. We especially liked that the fish really didn’t have a “fishy” taste, and we really enjoyed the dessert that night. It was refreshing and delicious and the perfect thing for a hot summer day! Comment from husband: “The contest is only four weeks long? Tell them to extend it!” ---------------------------------I made all the recipes, and my husband and I really enjoyed it.

Monkeys aren’t apes, and apes aren’t monkeys — though they are both classified as primates. Primates are animals that have five fingers, flat nails instead of claws, share a distinctive tooth pattern, and have larger brain-to-body weight ratios when compared to other mammals.
So what’s the difference between monkeys and apes? Here’s the rundown: Characteristic
Apes
Monkeys *
Tail Broad chest Are very comfortable in an upright position
Going Ape Over Bananas… and Other Apes?
Spend a lot of time swinging/ hanging from their arms
Despite popular belief, bananas aren’t the ideal food for monkeys — though monkeys have grown to love them! The bananas we’re familiar with don’t really grow in monkey habitats in the wild, but in captivity they’ve become a popular treat. Most monkeys, though, prefer grapes to bananas.
More frequently walk on branches than swing or hang More intelligent than the other Naturally found only in Africa and Asia *a small percentage of monkeys don’t have tails
There are at least 260 species of monkeys but only a handful of ape species. 128
The Boro Park View
Monkey See, Monkey Do
Bananas aren’t overly healthy for monkeys as they can cause diabetes and tooth rot. For this reason, bananas are recommended only as infrequent treats, and some zoos have even banned them! Primates are omnivores, eating both plants and meat. Chimpanzees, known for their especially violent tendencies, even hunt and eat monkeys… and sometimes other chimpanzees!
Though apes don’t possess the ability to form human words, they can communicate with mankind through other means. Koko the gorilla was perhaps the most famous ape of all for her ability to communicate using more than 1,000 signs in a modified version of American Sign Language. Kanzi, a bonobo, is also pretty well known these days. He’s learned to recognize more than 3,000 spoken English words and communicates through symbols on a special board. Kanzi also knows how to build a fire and cook himself a meal!
By: Ruchy Reese
The Great Apes
Gorilla
Chimpanzee
The pygmy marmoset is the world’s smallest monkey, weighing less than an apple!
Primates have fingerprints, much like humans. The only other animal to have fingerprints is the koala.
The mandrill is the largest breed of monkey. Its fangs — which are longer than a lion’s — are quite noteworthy, as well.
The howler monkey is the loudest of all land animals — even louder than the mighty lion!
Orangutan
Bonobo
The orangutan is the most intelligent of all apes. From Bnei Adam to Bonobo Science is baffled by the fact that humans and apes* share DNA that is more than 98 % similar. The Gemara easily provides the explanation for this: During the days of Nimrod, a group of people began building Migdal Bavel, a tower to the heavens — some of them hoping to wage war against Hashem himself. Those desiring war were dispersed and transformed from man to primate (Sanhedrin 109a), and this generation became known as Dor Haflagah, the “Generation of Dispersal.” This explains why apes are so quick to copy man. The Shevet Mussar says that because apes were originally human, they retain some human characteristics, and whenever they see a person, they try to emulate him. Apes, he says, are forever in agony over their current quasi-human state, always hoping to return to their former status. He cautions that man should learn from apes to be careful to not sin because one might end up eternally regretting a bad decision… *chimpanzees and bonobos were tested
Apes generally live into their 30s, though some live longer.
Spider monkeys, with their long arms, legs and tail, are the most acrobatic of monkeys. They can leap across gaps 35 feet wide!
