Please note: (Re: Back in the Seat, Back The Table of in the Day, Issue 89) Contents can Wow! The feature about station wagons brought back so many old memories. The now be found cars my father owned all had one thing on the secondin common: They had four wheels and to-last page. moved. One had plastic windows, another holes in the floor (my sister’s shoe once fell through such a hole on the way to the city!), but all that did not matter. The chesed that was done with each car was unbelievable. One of the writers wrote that they often had to stop to pour water into one of the pipes in the car. That was nostalgic for me, too! We never left the house before we refilled that bottle of water. And what did we do when we didn’t know the way? There was no GPS. We actually stopped on the side of the road, opened the glove compartment, and took out the map. We found where we were, traveled for several minutes, and then stopped to consult the map again. Otherwise, we stopped at a gas station to ask for directions. There were no car seats or seat belts back then, so as many people as could fit went right in. We kids jumped from the back to the front and vice versa with no problem, and it was so much fun! My kids can’t imagine it. Parents, enjoy your peaceful ride with everyone safely strapped in and comfortable! Thanks for the beautiful articles. A Reader Who Reminisces

HOURS IN OUR STATION WAGON

(Re: Back in the Seat, Back in the Day, Issue 89) I’m officially too young, perhaps, to legally claim a share in the station wagon memories. But, alas! I too remember the days when metal seatbelts blistered my fingers as I climbed into a vehicle that reminded one more of a boat than a car… How I loved to catch the breeze through the open window, blissfully feeling the wind caress my face — even

though I knew that detangling my hair later would be quite the feat. I spent so many hours in our station wagon touring America, that even now, as a mother of four, I instantly doze off within minutes of climbing into a vehicle, its movement lulling me fast to sleep. Though I have many fond memories of those days, there’s one that I’m thankful to relegate to the past. Cars in those days (at least ours!) would frequently overheat, and in an effort to prevent the inevitable, the heat would be turned on despite the already scorching confines of the air-conditionless insides. I lived in mortal dread of those moments… I wonder if anyone shares this memory? Y.C.

YOUR VOICE ENHANCING THE MITZVAH

Dear Mitzvah Doer, As someone who frequently delivers nourishing meals to kimpeturins and the like under the auspices of a gemach, I would like to applaud the cooks and their families. The recipients are surely very grateful, and I’m proud to be but a small part of this mitzvah. In no way is this letter meant as a critique; I would simply like to point out some do’s and don’ts that have the potential to make this mitzvah even more meaningful and appreciated.

When packing up the foods, please do not put homemade drinks into those coffee cups that have a matching click-on cover. When the foods are in a plastic grocery bag, there is a 100% chance that the drinks will spill. When they are placed into any other sort of bag, there is close to a 100% chance that they’ll spill. Only include drinks that are factory-sealed. A scrumptiouslooking meal is destroyed when covered with dripping cappuccino (as is the driver’s car). Likewise, boiling soup poured into a plastic container may melt the cover and leak. Concerning bags: Plastic grocery bags may be the cheapest option, but the foods will roll around in such a bag, and the initial presentation will be lost. Similarly, a paper bag filled to the brim with a deluxe meal, but held with cheap rope or ribbon handles, will collapse. Please use sturdy paper bags with strong handles and a wide, flat bottom. Sometimes cooks become super extravagant when it comes to presentation: Foods are piled one atop the other and held together by a ribbon. How lovely! But that tower may not make it to the recipient’s home intact. A Styrofoam tray, with strategically placed foods, will also have the driver picking the items off the car floor… unless the foods are stuck down and securely wrapped. I’ve often found small notes included with the hashgachos of the food items or extending brachos to the recipient. It’s a touching gesture. Cutlery wrapped in a decorative napkin and tied with a ribbon can further enhance the package. Finally, if you, the cook, has a business (designing pacifier clips, selling stretchies, etc.), it’s preferable not to include your ad in the bag. The recipients may not appreciate that particular promotion, and it may put them in an uncomfortable spot. Tizku l’mitzvos to all the amazing participants of this mitzvah. R.S.

PARSHAS PINCHAS Let’s Win the Lottery!

This week’s parsha discusses how Eretz Yisroel was to be divided — by lottery. If every shevet received its portion based on its size and number of members, why was there a need for lots? Couldn’t Eretz Yisroel have been divided with ruach hakodesh alone? DOV HAD A GREAT JOB. He was an engineer employed by a firm that worked on highway construction. He spent most of his days in a large corporate office, coordinating technical aspects of many diverse projects simultaneously. The best part was his paycheck. His high-end salary was well-deserved, and like clockwork, he received a check each week. Over the years, it crossed Dov’s mind numerous times to leave the company and establish his own. With his experience, he could easily succeed. But the steady paycheck and ability to focus on the actual work without needing to search for clients helped him choose status quo. And so, Dov remained in his comfort zone behind his desk in the big office. At first it was subtle, then the signs became more discernible. The

business was taking a dip. There were fewer clients and less projects for Dov to mastermind. That’s why Dov was not surprised when he was summoned to the CEO’s office. “I don’t know how to tell this to you,” the boss began, “but I’m sure you’ve noticed there is less of a need for your position. I’m not sure how much longer we will be able to remain afloat altogether.” Dov’s boss handed him his final paycheck and thanked him for years of dedication and loyalty. Dov found himself on the other side of the door in utter shock. Just like that, from one moment to the next, he was jobless! Unemployed! There hadn’t even been a grace period to get used to this new reality. Nu, what’s a Yid to do? Dov cleaned up his desk, put his paycheck inside his attache case, and took one last sweeping look around

the office. Then he went straight to the bank. After waiting in line, it was Dov’s turn. He stuck his hand inside his case to pull out the check — but it wasn’t there. Frantic, he looked inside every pocket and combed through every document, but the check did not turn up. He was sure he had put the check inside. Where could it have disappeared to? Dov retraced his steps and went back inside the office he thought he would never see again. He checked on and around his desk, but the coveted slip was nowhere to be found. He emptied the contents of his case again. And there it was, in full view! Right on top of a pile of forms. How come he hadn’t seen it when he had gone through every piece of paper just before? Dov wavered between delight and discomfort. Especially now,

when no further income was on the horizon, finding the check was so crucial. Yet he was shaken by the fact that on this super-challenging day, he had to endure more than an hour of unnecessary anguish. He left the office again, heading for the bank. As soon as he stepped outside, he met a friend whom he hadn’t seen in years. “Dov! How bashert that I am meeting you! Are you still in the highway construction line? Someone just asked me if I could refer them to a good engineer for a large project. I wonder if I would have remembered that this is what you do if I hadn’t bumped into you!” This was better than Dov could ever have dreamed! Just hours after receiving the pink slip, he was headon with his first client as an independent contractor. Indeed, this was the first in a chain of satisfied clients who enjoyed Dov’s solopreneur services. In our day-to-day lives, we shoulder the burden of our parnassah. With a bit of contemplation, though, we can clearly see that, in truth, our burden is being carried by Hakadosh Baruch Hu. He pays heed to our needs and makes sure we have what it takes to fill them.

* * * * * Klal Yisroel was at a crossroads. They were ready to leave the midbar, the place where they’d received everything they needed in a supernatural way, and enter the land of Eretz Yisroel, where they would need to work for their bread. Specifically at this point, Hakadosh Baruch Hu wished to teach them that a person must do what it takes to obtain his parnassah. But he must also realize that his efforts are merely hishtadlus. His parnassah itself comes from Above. This can be learned from the lottery. When a person draws a raffle, he must handle the technical aspects, like preparing the tickets and pulling out a lucky winner. The results of the drawing, however, are not in his control. They are clearly determined from Above. So, too, it is with our bread. We must toil — and then we must realize that the results of our efforts are ultimately decided by Hakadosh Baruch Hu. Adapted from the teachings of Rav Mordechai Freundlich, z”l.

Did You Know? Moshe Rabbeinu’s tefillah asking Hashem to appoint another leader in his place consisted of 28 words. The Ba’al Haturim points out that this corresponds with the 28 years Yehoshua ultimately led Klal Yisroel.

CHAPTER 14 RECAP: Shabbesai Tzvi spends a lot of time with Netzach in Smyrna. Yechiel travels to Warsaw when his grandfather passes on, and his father, Yankiv Tomashov, meets with Rav Shloime to share with him his concerns about his son.

Y

ankiv leaned forward. “I had been receiving letters from my son Yechiel in Smyrna containing veiled references to Shabbesai Tzvi. Although he didn’t actually come out and admit it, Yechiel had clearly come under the influence of Shabbesai Tzvi. I was deeply concerned, but I didn’t want to burden you with my worries while you were occupied with the wedding of your child.” “And now that Yechiel is here?” Yankiv Tomashov took a deep breath and let it out slowly. “Rav Shloime, my son believes that Shabbesai Tzvi is Moshiach,” he said in an anguished voice. Rav Shloime groped for the right thing to say without success. “How can I help you, my friend?” he asked quietly. “I don’t know. I suppose it would help me to know what you think. What is your opinion of Shabbesai Tzvi, Rav Shloime? Have you given this matter serious thought?” “I have never really given it much thought. Over the centuries, about a dozen people have claimed to be Moshiach. Some of them, such as Bar Kochba and Shlomo Molcho, will be long remembered. Others have long

46

since been forgotten. History has pronounced its verdict on them. History will also pronounce its verdict on Shabbesai Tzvi.” “But I cannot wait for history to decide, Rav Shloime. I have a responsibility to my son right now. Do you think it’s possible that Shabbesai Tzvi is indeed Moshiach?” “I’m very skeptical. Especially in view of the stories about the outlandish sins he’s committed, such as uttering the Shem Hameforash. However, according to what I hear, Shabbesai Tzvi does have some extraordinary powers. But is he Moshiach? Are all those stories just unfounded rumors? And if these stories are true, how can we accept as Moshiach someone who so blatantly violates the Torah?” Rav Shloime shrugged. “We’re so far away. How can we know with any degree of certainty what goes on in those lands? All we hear are rumors and third-hand reports.” “But what am I to do? What if Shabbesai Tzvi is an impostor? What if my son is devoting his life to an illusion? What about his children, my grandchildren? Can I just stand by and let it happen?” “Perhaps I’ll be able to give you a better answer in several months. I shall

be leaving for Constantinople after the summer. Perhaps I’ll learn something more substantial there.” Yankiv Tomashov’s eyes opened wide. “Why are you going to Constantinople, if I may ask?” “You may certainly ask. We’re experiencing some difficult problems in Pulichev. We have several women whose husbands have been missing since the Cossack uprisings and have never been seen or heard from since. Until we can determine the fate of their husbands with absolute certainty, these women can never remarry. They will remain agunos for the rest of their lives. This is actually a widespread problem in Poland, especially in the towns and villages near Pulichev, because we are so close to the Ukraine, the center of the uprising. Last month, the rabbis of my district met to discuss the problem. They appointed me to go to Constantinople to gather information.” “What are you hoping to find?” “Well, it’s been said that many of the men taken captive by the Tatars during the uprisings were eventually taken to Constantinople, where the Jewish population paid high ransoms for their release. Some of these men, believing their families had perished, chose to remain in Constantinople rather than make the journey back to Poland. Who knows? It’s possible that several of the missing husbands are alive. If not, perhaps I can find verification of their

deaths.” “I see. May the Almighty protect you from the perils of the road and help you find what you seek.” With these words, Yankiv Tomashov fell into a deep silence that lasted for several minutes. “Rav Shloime,” he said at last. “There is an old bond of friendship between our two families. I’d like to impose on that friendship now.” “What do you mean?” “My son has given his loyalties, his very life, to Shabbesai Tzvi. He has even changed his family name from Tomashov to Hapolani at Shabbesai Tzvi’s behest. Perhaps I have no right to ask this of you, but I must know if my son has fallen into the hands of a false prophet. Since you’re going to Constantinople anyway, I beg you to continue to Smyrna and meet Shabbesai Tzvi. I’ll abide by your opinion. Naturally, I’ll bear all the expenses. Rav Shloime, will you do it?” Rav Shloime looked at Yankiv with sympathy. “It is a difficult thing you ask,” he said slowly, “but if my family has no objections, I’ll extend my journey and visit Smyrna.” “Thank you. I am beholden to you for your kindness.” At that moment, Yechiel appeared on the steps of the house. Seeing his father and Rav Shloime in the garden, he went over to them. “Good afternoon,” said Yechiel as he joined them. “Am I interrupting a private conversation?” “Not at all, Yechiel,” said Rav Shloime. “Not at all. In fact, I was just telling your father about some of the problems we’ve been having in Pulichev. Perhaps you can help.” “How can I help you?” “It’s well known that many of the men taken captive by the Tatars were brought to Constantinople. Some of these men have decided to remain in Constantinople rather than make the journey back to Poland.” “Yes. I’ve met some of them. They heard their families had been murdered, and they see no reason to return to Poland.” “Quite so. But still, their wives may in fact have survived and are now unable to remarry. I’ll soon be going to Constantinople to see if I can find information about their husbands. Perhaps you can help me?” “I’ll be delighted to help, Rav Shloime. Besides telling you what I know, I can give you letters of introduction to important people in Constantinople. Perhaps I’ll even come to assist you.” “Excellent, excellent. I’d like to ask one more favor of you. Your father has been telling me about Shabbesai Tzvi, incidents he heard about from you. Since I am traveling all the way to Turkey, I’d certainly like to take this opportunity to meet him. If I come to Smyrna after I finish my work in Constantinople, could you arrange a meeting for me?” The request took Yechiel by surprise, but he did not become flustered. “I’ll be glad to arrange such a meeting,” he said. “In fact, now that I think of it, there are quite a few refugees living in Smyrna, as well. You might very well find that your mission will lead you there.” Armed with Yechiel’s letters of introduction, Rav Shloime Strasbourg arrived in Constantinople in the autumn of 1662. He brought along a thick sheaf of documents containing detailed information about each particular case.

In early winter, Rav Shloime’s investigations brought him to Smyrna, as Yechiel had indeed predicted.

It was not difficult to find the refugees who had settled in Constantinople, since most of them lived in close proximity to one another. During the first week, Rav Shloime found the husband of a mother of five from Lublin. He also confirmed the deaths of the husbands of two sisters from Pulichev. The second week brought the solution of several additional cases, but the initial successes were followed by weeks of painstaking work that resulted in no significant discoveries. In early winter, Rav Shloime’s investigations brought him to Smyrna, as Yechiel had indeed predicted. Yechiel arranged for Rav Shloime to meet Shabbesai Tzvi on the second evening after his arrival in Smyrna. In accordance with Shabbesai Tzvi’s directions, Yechiel did not accompany Rav Shloime to the meeting. The door was opened by an older man with a gray beard who asked his name. He then introduced himself as Mordechai Tzvi, the father of Shabbesai Tzvi, and showed him to a room at the front of the house. When Rav Shloime entered the room, Shabbesai Tzvi rose from his chair, his hand resting on a Gemara that lay open on the table. He wore brown gabardine robes and a plain white turban, but Rav Shloime could see an aura of nobility about him. “Welcome, Rav Strasbourg,” said Shabbesai Tzvi, with gentle softness in his voice. “Please sit down. It’s an honor to meet such a famous person.” “I could say the same thing to you,” replied Rav Shloime with a smile. He was instantly aware of Shabbesai Tzvi’s extraordinary charisma. “You’ve made a long journey,” said Shabbesai Tzvi as he settled into the green armchair, his eyes never leaving Rav Shloime’s face. “Travel weakens the body but fortifies the soul.” “My journey is far from over.” Shabbesai Tzvi nodded. “I’ve heard about your work here in Turkey. What you are doing is a mitzvah of the highest order. May the Almighty watch over you and return you safely to your home. I’m told you head a yeshivah in Pulichev.” “Yes.” “Which Gemara are you presently learning in your yeshivah?” “Maseches Temurah.” For the next half hour, they discussed a particularly difficult sugya in the third perek. During the discussion, Shabbesai Tzvi quoted verbatim related sugyos in Maseches Pesachim, Maseches Yoma, Maseches Kiddushin and Maseches Zevachim. Then he resolved all these difficulties with one stunningly lucid insight into the entire sugya. Rav Shloime was amazed by the sheer brilliance of Shabbesai Tzvi’s analytical explanation and his encyclopedic knowledge of the Talmud. At one point, Esther Tzvi, the mother of Shabbesai Tzvi, entered bearing a pot of tea and a plate of cakes. She nodded politely and left. But Shabbesai Tzvi toyed with the cakes distractedly. His mind was obviously elsewhere. The hunger in his eyes was not for food. “Rav Shloime, can we have a confidential conversation?” To be continued…

At Long Last, NY’s State of Emergency Ends Exactly 474 days after it was first declared, New York’s state of emergency finally came to an end, thanks to a decline in COVID-19 cases amid rising vaccination rates. Speaking at a June 23rd press conference, Governor Andrew Cuomo said that the state of emergency would not be renewed once it expired after June 24. “We’re starting to write a new chapter for a post-COVID New York — the state disaster emergency is ending, and we can focus on reimaging, rebuilding and renewing our state,” said Cuomo. “This doesn’t mean COVID is gone, we still have to get more New Yorkers vaccinated, but we are getting back on track and starting to live life once again.” Also coming to an end were the governor’s executive powers, which gave him the authority to make unilateral decisions about pandemic-related restrictions. “The crisis, thank G-d, is passing,” said New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. “It’s time to restore normal democracy.”

Adams-Sliwa Mayoral Race Likely in November

Ticks Aplenty This Summer The advent of warmer weather has long brought with it the need to be vigilant about ticks, but the tiny insects, which can transmit multiple diseases, are expected to be particularly plentiful this year. The Journal News reported that the blacklegged ticks that have been in our area in recent years are expected to be joined by two additional types, making this summer prime time for ticks. This year is one “that we predicted would be a particularly bad one, meaning lots of infected ticks in that nymph stage that are crawling around wanting

54

to bite you,” said Richard Ostfeld, who has studied ticks and tick-borne diseases for some 30 years at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Dutchess County. According to the CDC, approximately 30,000 cases of Lyme disease are reported each year in New York, which has the thirteenth highest infection rate in the United States. Newer variants of ticks may bring with them the potential for babesiosis, a relatively uncommon but treatable blood infection that can be life-threatening in some cases and extremely mild in others. In rare cases, the newer variants of ticks may cause a different virus that isn’t currently treatable by medication and leaves patients suffering serious brain swelling. Tick populations in the region are expected to be high through mid-July, and Westchester County Health Commissioner Sherlita Amler emphasized the importance of being on the lookout for the tiny insects. “Whatever you were doing, you were mowing the law or you were just sitting out on the deck reading a book, when you come back in, you do want to do a tick check,” said Amler.

While it may be a few more weeks before final results are announced from last week’s mayoral primary, Eric Adams’ commanding lead makes it seem likely that his will be the name on the democratic ballot when Election Day rolls around in November. Boro Park 24 reported that with nearly 84% of the city’s precincts reporting results, Adams captured 31.7% of the vote, nearly ten points ahead of Maya Wiley and just over 12 percentage points ahead of Kathryn Garcia. Andrew Yang, who at one point seemed like he had a serious shot at City Hall, conceded last week after placing a dis-

tant fourth. Official results are expected to be announced on July 12, with absentee and affidavit ballots finally being counted this week. Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa easily took the Republican primary, earning nearly 72% of the total vote. In other local contests, likely winners appear to be City Councilman Brad Lander in the race for comptroller, City Councilman Antonio Reynoso in the Brooklyn borough president primary, and Steven Saperstein in the District 48 City Council election.

Tragedy in Miami: Massive Section of Twelve-Story Residential Building Collapses Questions continue to swirl about the structural integrity of a Surfside condominium building that suffered a devastating partial collapse in the predawn hours of June 24, killing an undetermined number of people as they slept. Approximately a third of the Champlain Towers South came down at approximately 1:15 a.m. Plumes of dust rose into the air as the building’s twelve floors pancaked on top of each other within seconds, trapping an untold number of people inside. Hamodia reported that multiple Jewish families were said to be in the 55 affected apartments at the time of the deadly collapse, which happened so quickly that there was no time for anyone to escape from the fallen structure. Thirty-five people from other apartments were pulled from the rubble in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy. Crews worked desperately for days using specialized high-tech and heavyduty rescue equipment as well as search dogs and microphones, hoping to find survivors amid the ruins. Searchers in-

cluded Hatzolah and Chesed Shel Emes teams, as well as firefighters, more than 2,000 FEMA and state emergency workers, and international rescue crews from Israel and Mexico. By Monday night, eleven deaths had been confirmed and 150 people were still unaccounted for. Located at 87th Street and Collins Avenue just north of Miami Beach, the 132-apartment building was built in 1980 and was in the midst of undergoing a state-mandated 40-year recertification. A 2018 engineering report found that the building was in need of $9 million in repairs to fix major structural damage to the concrete slab supporting the ground floor pool deck, and also significant cracking in concrete columns and beams in the building’s parking garage. The report did not specify that there was an immediate danger to residents, and it is unclear at this time if these issues contributed in any way to the collapse.

CHAPTER FOURTEEN tries calling Rabbi Reiness’ yeshivah, which angers Osher. He calls her back and warns her not to try calling or coming, or he’ll just run farther away.

RECAP: Ariella

Ariella decides to go to Acco to sniff out the situation discreetly while enjoying a change of scenery she desperately needs.

Sarah

Reiness dropped her appointment book into her bag as she answered an incoming call. “How are you, Bassi? How are the kids? How are you managing?” “Baruch Hashem, wonderful.” She heard the cheerful voice of her younger sister. “Baruch and Gadi went out to chase a deer that they claim they saw. Shulamis and Meira tried to tell them that there are no deer in the Galilee Hills, and they all went out to decide who’s right. Arik and Daniel are playing Kapla here next to me, Malka is trying to knock it down, and Kreindy is sleeping, and that’s it. Oh, and Yisrael Meir is not back from cheder yet, of course.” “And who was right? I’m curious. Are there deer in the Galilee or not?” “What else do you want me to know? I don’t even know if there’s enough laundry detergent in the house, and you’re asking me about deer?” Sarah chuckled. “Would you like to come to us for Shabbos?” “With Kreindy? I don’t like traveling with such a small baby in this cold.” “But how will you be able to cook this way?” “Oh, the kids help me. You have to see the dips that Shulamis can prepare… I’ll put up a challah dough and fish tonight, Aryeh will make the cholent, and we’ll manage just fine.” “I want to send you something,” Sarah said, reaching for the yeast cake that had gone into the oven straight as a ruler and emerged looking

more like a question mark. She began to slice it. “Not that I’m such a gourmet cook — you know me — but the food that I make is tasty, and I have more time than you do.” “When, exactly? When you get home from Haifa at nine p.m.? Or maybe on Wednesday, when you go to the clinic in Bnei Brak and come back after midnight, collapsing from exhaustion?” Bassi suppressed her own yawn. “You can laugh, but I can even bake then.” “So maybe I’ll ask Aryeh to come over to you on Friday, if he has time, and take a few of the kids with him. They’ll have an outing, and I’ll be able to sweep out this caravan and maybe even have a chance to mop the floor.” “Great idea. Your kids will enjoy Elazar’s boys, and I’ll finally be able to send you the gift I bought for Kreindele. But tell me, Bassi, isn’t it very cold out there for you?” “Are you kidding me? You have to come see how warm and dry it is here!” Her sister laughed as she placed the baby over her shoulder. “The heat is so strong, it’s sometimes too much. Do you know what Kreindy’s wearing right now? The light-blue footie that you bought for Baruch when he was born. And that was in Sivan, just to remind you.” “All right, tell her that she should wait patiently until the bag comes from her old aunt. There’s the pinkest footie ever in there.”

***** Little Kreindy howled all evening, and by the time she calmed down, Bassi’s arms ached. She sat down at the table and drank the cup of tea she’d made for herself, eyeing the roll of patterned wallpaper that was resting on the fridge for a week already. She’d promised herself that she’d put it up, and if she wouldn’t fulfill these kinds of promises, then she wouldn’t be trustworthy in her own eyes. “Now you have no excuse,” Bassi told herself in a low voice. “Everyone’s sleeping. You can go back to being energetic and productive, and start working on the hallway.” She carefully moved Daniel over and stood up. From the doorway to the hallway, she saw the row of cars Daniel had lined up earlier, before he’d gone to sleep. She’d have to move them if she wanted to put down a stool so she could work on the upper half of the wall. Where was the stool, anyway? She abandoned her tea and moved toward the roll. But no. She did not have the energy to glue wallpaper right now… And she had even less energy to wash dishes. She needed something else to do, something that would refresh her, and help her air out…Where was that box she hadn’t managed to unpack since they’d moved? Bassi rummaged around inside until she pulled out her old origami booklet. She took three colorful pages out of the envelope stapled into the back. The children didn’t have access to this paper; she

let them use it only for special occasions. Slowly, she crafted a tall vase, and then she added three white carnations, all of different heights. The fourth flower, the lowest of them all, fell out of her hand when she nodded off. “Bassi?” She didn’t hear Aryeh. He stood in place quietly, and after a few seconds, he went into the kitchen. He placed a brown paper bag on the counter, cleared the counter from the remnants of the children’s and Bassi’s supper, and looked for the kettle to boil up some water. The base was in its place, plugged in. But where was the actual kettle? Oh, there it was, behind the bread on the table. Yisrael Meir must have made a drink for himself when he came home from cheder. Aryeh left the kitchen and quietly tiptoed to the boys’ room. His oldest lay there quietly, eyes closed. Aryeh straightened his blanket and sat down on the edge of the bed, gazing at his son. They hardly saw one another during the week since they’d moved to this new town. In the morning they traveled together to Tzefas for a vasikin Shacharis, and then they parted ways. He continued on to kollel, while his son went to cheder for a long day, until seven in the evening. When Aryeh would return home after night seder, Yisrael Meir would already be sleeping, recharging for the next day. Aryeh wished they could schmooze a little in the morning, on their ride to Tzefas, but Yisrael Meir usually dozed off.

Bassi said the boy looked happy and that everything was fine, but the question was how much Bassi was able to see amid the wave of things she had to deal with every day. He stood up and went back to the kitchen. To his surprise, his wife was awake and standing there, tying up the full garbage bag. “Cheese Danishes with whole-wheat flour!” Bassi said when she saw him. “Just what I needed, Aryeh — how did you know? Thank you so much!” “And you’ll eat them, right?” Bassi laughed. “Yes. I’ll take one small Danish now, and I’ll freeze the rest. And whenever I crave something like this again, I’ll defrost some more.” She placed the pot with the spelt noodles and fish on the fire, and grabbed a plate and fork for herself. “Very good,” she said. “My cheese Danish is ready to eat.” Aryeh smiled when he saw the tiny pastry almost swallowed up by the huge plate. A minute later, his own meal was ready. Bassi disappeared for a moment to the dining room and returned with her paper vase. With a flourish, she placed it in the middle of the table and sat down. “I was so exhausted before, I just fell asleep,” she told him. “I had actually planned to finally start with the wallpaper, but I just couldn’t. Maybe I’ll do it soon, when we finish eating.” “Now? At ten-thirty at night?” “Why not?” “Um… when will you sleep?” “When I was a baby I slept a ton, my mother says. I think I slept enough for my whole life.” “Too bad that Kreindy’s not learning much from your habits as a baby. But what can we do if the example you’re setting for her these days is not exactly the greatest?” “Maybe she’s setting an example for me?” Bassi smiled as she sliced her pastry into miniscule pieces. “Everyone is

so worried about my sleeping enough. Sarah’s also worried about me. She’s afraid that I don’t have enough help in this hole.” “Do you feel that way?” “Baruch Hashem, I’m very happy here. You know that. I wanted to move to this moshav. We just need to find an arrangement for the kids’ transportation and take care of the permits for the house. Not that I have the energy for that right now.” “Wait, why transportation arrangements? What changed?”

and that it’s gotten used to me. I’ve also developed a few habits, like giving in to Shlomo about the light in the room. It’s a bit annoying that he takes it for granted and doesn’t say thank you, but I’ve already survived more serious things than a lack of appreciation. Then there’s another habit I’ve developed. Every night I lie in bed for a few minutes, and when I think Shlomo is sleeping, I get up and go to the window. Reb Elazar seems to have a nightly “custom” of his own — walking on the beach — and I like to watch him. I’m not always sure that the one I think is him is actually him, but all kinds of figures pass there, and there’s always someone who I can tell is him. Tonight he was walking so far away that I decided to go down myself to see whether it was actually him or not. I dressed quietly, in the dark, and went downstairs. I hoped Shlomo wouldn’t wake up and worry about me — though I doubted he’d make the effort to check if I was in bed or not, even if he did get up. It was cold on the beach, and I was sorry that I hadn’t taken my coat. The sand was a bit moist, because it had been very windy earlier, and that pushed the waves onto the beach. I walked calmly, looking at the forms the bottom of my shoes made in the sand. If Shlomo would want to follow me, he’d have no problem doing so. “Osher?” Suddenly there he was, right behind me. Reb Elazar. “I thought that was you, over there,” I said, confused, as I pointed with my chin to the old pier. “Did you come to look for me? To talk to me?” He looked at my trembling shoulders. “Yes. No,” I said. “I just wanted to see if it was really you or not.” “It’s really me. You can go back to sleep now.” His mouth was serious, but there was a smile in his voice. “I’d rather be here a bit.” “Here?”

“Sarah’s also worried about me. She’s afraid that I don’t have enough help in this hole.”

“Miriam Greenhaus is starting to leave to work earlier, so I won’t be able to send them with her anymore.” “Why, when is she going to be leaving?” “At a quarter to seven in the morning. Shulamis and Bracha cannot arrive at school at seven-fifteen. The building is still locked then! And Baruch and Gadi can’t get to cheder at that hour either. Their building might be open, but a first grader and a fifth grader cannot wander around in an empty building by themselves for almost an hour.” “And what are the Greenhauses doing with their children?” “They’ll drop them off at their grandmother’s house for now, but I can’t send our four along! Anyway, forget it; we’ll talk about it tomorrow. Hopefully, I’ll come up with a few ideas. And there’s always the option of paying for transportation, which we planned to do before we moved here.”

Osher Ariella would say that I’ve settled into a routine. I’m working, learning, eating and sleeping. I think you could say that I’ve gotten used to this place,

“Yes, it’s boring in my room.” He opened his mouth, closed it, and then opened it again. “Fine,” he said, and took off his jacket. “Just put this on in the meantime; you might catch a cold.” “Do you come to the beach every night?” “Almost every night,” he replied, as he walked on. I walked next to him. “Why?” He stopped and looked at the sea. “Look at how beautiful it is,” he said. “When I was a little boy, I fell asleep with this scenery in the background. Lots of my childhood memories are from here. My personality developed in front of these waves and the sea.” “Hey, one minute!” I said suddenly, like an old fluorescent light that turns on only a few seconds after hitting the switch. “This was your house when you were a boy, right?” “Actually, no.” Rabbi Reiness smiled. “We lived further into the city, in the new section.” “So what do you mean by those lofty sentences about your personality that…” I didn’t remember exactly what he’d said, and the truth is, I was afraid it might be chutzpah to speak to him this way, so I quickly stopped myself. “My personality developed. Can you tell me what a personality is, Osher?” he asked. “How exactly does it develop?” “It’s something that every person has inside,” I replied. I thought it was the right answer. “And I don’t have the energy to talk about philosophical things right now.” “Fine, so without the philosophy, because the answer to what I asked is very simple.” His smile didn’t move when he started walking again. “We lived in the inner part of the city, but from my house we could also see part of the shoreline.” “Oh,” I said, and scratched my forehead. “And besides, why is speaking about a personality considered ‘lofty’? I don’t think it is. And it certainly doesn’t have to be philosophical. To speak about your personality, and about what you aspire to be, is just like talking about what you want to eat for breakfast or supper.” “My personality is totally satisfied,” I said, very seriously. “You didn’t understand the mashal.” “I understood, Rebbi. I meant that my personality is so satisfied from all this talking that it doesn’t need breakfast or supper for at least three years, I think.” He was quiet. “Was I being chutzpah’dig?” I asked, after we continued walking for a few long, silent moments. I closely studied the imprint of Reb Elazar’s shoes. “Not at all,” he replied. “I’m just wondering why you chose to say three years. Maybe thirty? Maybe seventeen? Why three?” “No special reason,” I said. I sensed my voice getting whiny. “Maybe because three years have passed since my bar mitzvah, and everyone expected that I’d be all grown up by now. But with me, things don’t exactly go as expected.” He remained quiet, just walking alongside me in the stillness of the night, as the imprints of our soles continued making tracks in the sand. To be continued…

Independence Day. The crackle of the bonfire; the glow of the fireflies. It’s early summer, and endless days and balmy nights intertwine with American history on the glorious fourth. Come along for a summer road trip tour of America’s historical sites as we journey through the history of the United States.

REVOLUTIONARY WAR, 1775 Start in Boston with a visit to the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum. This hands-on museum, located in a replica of an 18th-century sailing vessel, recreates the events of the Boston Tea Party when American colonists tossed 340 chests of tea into Boston Harbor in protest of the British Tea Act of 1773. “No taxation without representation!” became the rallying cry of the colonists. Visitors to the museum can dump mock chests of tea into the water below. The museum also highlights Paul Revere’s midnight run to Concord to warn the colonists that “the British are coming.” Next, head down to Philadelphia and visit Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was signed. Make sure to visit the adjoining National Constitution Center and its exhibits on the Bill of Rights. The Liberty Bell is also a must-see. Then head over to Valley Forge National Park, where Washington’s Continental Army spent the winter of 1777, and where, despite their hardships, they reorganized and trained for the successful battles ahead.

WAR OF 1812 The United States and Great Britain squared off against each other again in the War of 1812. England succeeded in capturing Washington, D.C., and burning down the White House. Still, a trip down to Fort McHenry National Monument in Baltimore will show that despite the initial defeats at the hands of the British, the “rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night, that our flag was still there.” Francis Scott Key observed the bombardment of Fort McHenry from aboard a British vessel, but once it came to an end, he saw the stars and stripes rise from the fort and was inspired to write what became the national anthem. Heading out toward Cleveland, Ohio, one can take a short drive to Catawba Island and hop on a ferry across Lake Erie to Put-inBay. This village is unique, as golf carts are the primary form of transportation. Many golf cart rentals are available and easily accessible. Perry’s monument in the center of Put-in-Bay commemorates the decisive victory of Commodore William Perry against the British in the battle of Lake Erie.

MEXICAN AMERICAN WAR, 1846 Nashville, Tennessee, is home to the Hermitage, the estate of a hero of the Mexican war — the seventh president of the United States, Andrew Jackson. The house and grounds are staffed with workers dressed in 1800s costumes, and the self-guided tour comes complete with audio sets that have some tracks for adults and others for kids. Jackson’s victory in the battle of New Orleans made him an American hero, but his treatment of Native Americans and the resultant Trail of Tears have complicated his legacy.

THE CIVIL WAR, 1861 Take a boat out to Charleston Harbor, and visit Fort Sumter National Monument. Boat tours run out of downtown Charleston, South Carolina, on a fixed schedule and include a narrated tour of the city’s history. In April 1861, President Lincoln sent a supply ship with reinforcements for Union soldiers located at Fort Sumter. Local Confederates opened fire on the boat and the fort, and the American Civil War began. Farther north, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, is the location of a pivotal Civil War battle and the location of Lincoln’s famous address. In Richmond, Virginia, visit the Civil War Museum, which includes three sites: the White House of the Confederacy, the Tredegar Iron Works and the Appomattox Courthouse, where General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant. The Confederate Hebrew Cemetery in Richmond is the final resting place for many Jewish soldiers who fought for the South.

WORLD WAR I, 1914: The World War I Museum and Memorial in Kansas City, Missouri, highlights America’s involvement in the Great War. It includes the most comprehensive collection of World War I artifacts in the world. Over in Washington, D.C., the Woodrow Wilson House was the home of the 28th president of the United States. Wilson presided over America’s victory in World War I and facilitated its rise as a formidable world power. Wilson earned a Nobel Prize for his work in creating the ill-fated League of Nations. Wilson also appointed Louis Brandeis as the first Jewish Supreme Court Justice.

SPANISH AMERICAN WAR, 1898: Sensationalist “yellow journalism” helped propel the United States to war. The rallying call of “Remember the Maine” and its alleged sinking in Havana Harbor by Spanish forces became the focus of heated newspaper battles between Joseph Pulitzer’s New York World and William Randolph Hearst’s New York Journal. On the Pacific coast, north of Los Angeles, sits the majestic Hearst Castle, the estate of William Randolph Hearst, where visitors can tour the house and gardens. Back in New York, one can visit the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site. The reconstructed brownstone townhouse consists of five rooms that are furnished as when the family lived there. Teddy Roosevelt, a renowned friend of Jews and Jewish causes, led his Rough Riders to victory over the Spanish in Cuba and helped bring an end to the Spanish colonization of the Americas.

POST–WORLD WAR II East of Mount Rushmore National Park in South Dakota sits the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site. During the Cold War, a vast arsenal of nuclear weapons was hidden in the Great Plains, ready for deployment at a moment’s notice. Today one can visit the missile silo and see the launch site. In Dallas, Texas, the Sixth Floor Museum recreates the events surrounding President Kennedy’s assassination in 1963. The museum on the sixth floor of the old Texas Book Depository is the exact spot where Lee Harvey Oswald brought the president’s life to a tragic end. In Birmingham, Alabama, the Rosa Parks Museum, situated at the site of Rosa Parks’ arrest, highlights the Birmingham Bus Boycott and the beginning of the civil rights movement. The Lorraine Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee, is the location of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and hosts the National Civil Rights Museum. In Cape Canaveral, Florida, one can visit the Kennedy Space Center and the Apollo/Saturn V Center, highlighting the Apollo missions and man landing on the moon. And over in New York City, the 9/11 Memorial and Museum commemorates the horrific events of September 11, 2001.

These are just a sampling of the many American historical sites that are accessible to visitors. Many of the sites detailed above are ones that I have frequented with my family on summer road trips. History can be a fascinating subject when it is engaging and immersive. The sites above are scattered across the United States, but many are found in readily accessible geographical areas, and one can easily incorporate them into any exciting summer road trip itinerary.

Let’s take a poll. Raise your hand if you think leaving a baby alone in the bathtub is unsafe. Good. Put your hands down. Now raise your hand if you think that leaving sleeping kids alone in the house is unsafe. Or having easily-accessible hot water around the house. Thank you. You can put your hands down now. Yes, all of you. The next question is a trick one. Raise your hand if you never, ever, ever did any of the above. Oooooooh.

Here’s the thing. The Boro Park View assigned a project to me: Prepare a feature on the questionable safety of leaving children with a baby monitor. Easy enough, I thought. I’m a rather opinionated person, which means that I basically have only one opinion on any given topic. (At a given moment, anyway.) But I can ask around, get different perspectives, put it all neatly in bullets and lists, and offer it to the readers to decide. No problem, right? So I did. I posed the question to lots of different mothers — emphasis on different. And the results were extremely diverse. They basically ranged from no to noooooo with an occasional never. Generally in font size 35 and followed by seven exclamation point. Not very fair to a writer who needs to pretend she’s unbiased! Perhaps it was merely as one mother put it: “The only mothers who are going to answer you guiltlessly are those who are strongly against it. The others are quietly doing their own thing, feeling no need to convince anyone else!” I therefore present you with my super-extensive list of nos, nooooos and nevers. And also a sprinkling of the other kind, yes.

Why Use a Baby Monitor? If you’re asking this question, skip to the next article. This is an article for moms. Mothers use baby monitors so they can leave the house when the kids are asleep and are not expected to wake up anytime soon. Or so they can run to pick up another child from a playgroup four houses away. Or because they work

at night, and while Tatty is manning the fort, the landlord occasionally fills in. Or if the bedroom is on a different floor from where Mommy spends her evenings. You get the idea. And it’s important to know this, because the thing we need to establish first is that mothers do not leave baby monitors because they are negligent. (Put gently, negligent mothers do not use baby monitors.) They use them because they worry about their children and want to make sure they are always supervised. So this article is not going to determine whether leaving a baby monitor means you are a horrible mother or not. It will simply discuss whether the monitor is as safe as you expect it to be.

Are Baby Monitors Safe? T h e

C o n s

Brachi is adamant. “Please, please, no! I was heading to bed one night when I smelled burning rubber. I quickly ran to get my kids and found that one of the light switches had malfunctioned and was now smoking! Electric fires can spread in seconds, and that’s not something a baby monitor can detect!” Shani agrees. “Recently, I was looking at photos of a fire in a huge, multi-family building, and I was struck by a horrible thought. Imagine if any of these countless kids were alone that night!” Raizel uses stronger language. “If a fire breaks out, chas v’shalom, whose kids will your landlord rescue first — yours, or hers?”

ask me now why that even makes a difference! I came back home to find my baby screaming hysterically and very obviously traumatized. I couldn’t calm him down! His voice was hoarse and it was clear that he had been screaming for a very long time. I then knocked on my neighbor’s door to retrieve my monitor and asked her how things had gone. She said, ‘Great! He didn’t make a peep!’ Since then I tell myself, If I leave my kids alone one hundred times, and ninety-nine of those times turn out fine, that one time the monitor malfunctions is one traumatizing event too much!” Deena adds another twist: “Think of how frightening it is for kids to sud“Here’s a twist your readers never thought about,” Faiga Rochel told me denly wake up and see that they are gravely. “Did they ever consider the EMF?!” alone. You know that someone is listening in. But your kids don’t know I was speechless. (I mean, do you know what EMF is? And would you that!” admit it?) “Tragic things happen sometimes,” Judging by the look on her face, it sounded serious. Shifra Leah concludes, “no matter how careful you are. “It’s not just about fires,” Rochel Tova adds. “What about burglars? Gas? Or even a child falling off the bed! And you know what? Maybe you’re constantly watching the video monitor and you do actually see something happening. What are you going to do about it when you’re not right there?”

“I’ll tell you why I don’t trust monitors anymore,” Elise says. “A family on our block went to a wedding, leaving behind the sleeping five-year-old with a monitor for the neighbor to listen in. The kid woke up and discovered that she was home alone. She didn’t cry. She just walked out of the house and went to search for her parents. If I hadn’t gone to take out my garbage and happened to find her, crying and shaking in fear, I don’t want to imagine what could have happened.” Tammy also has a story to share. “I once left my sleeping baby with a monitor to go to a bris across the street. I felt pretty safe, since I was just across the street, right? Don’t

“If you got any response in favor of leaving a monitor, it’s from a mother who does it herself and has a guilty conscience about it,” Sarah warns me. (Oops, this should probably go in the Cons section.) But then she’s quiet for a moment, and then sheepishly says, “Wait. Now that I’m thinking about it, maybe I did do it once or twice myself. Forget it. Discount my opinion.” Really, pro-monitorians should wear stickers. “Of course things can happen,” Dahlia proclaims. She doesn’t even try to sound apologetic, and I respect her for that. “Things can always happen. If you want to go all the way out, well, maybe you should sleep in the same room as your kids. Or not go to sleep at all. That’s also leaving them unsupervised! “It’s so easy to wave the irresponsibility card, but the truth is that in real life we’re always going to need to find a balance that is conscious of possible dangers on the one hand, but also puts some trust in Hashem. “I think that if you’re not very far away, and will be gone for only a short while, and there’s someone listening in and also physically checking on them every once in a while — that’s appropriate hishtadlus.”

Elana agrees. “I wish people wouldn’t get so judgmental about this topic. I’m a single mother. Going out during the day is not very possible with my young daughter, so yes, I sometimes leave the house at night and ask a neighbor to pop in. That, coupled with the monitor so the neighbor can also listen in between checks, feels like enough hishtadlus to me. “Some people are just masking their own anxiety with proclamations like ‘irresponsible.’ But even those who aren’t should ask themselves whether they truly believe that constant vigil is possible. Do they never let their kids walk over to Bubby’s alone? Do they stay awake at night to watch their children? Do they let their kids visit friends? So many things can go wrong at any moment. We can’t really live a life that is constantly envisioning the next tragedy. Hishtadlus is always a balance. “Is it right for everyone?” she concludes. “No. Everyone needs to do what’s right for them. But please… don’t judge. There really are different perspectives out there.”

A Parenting Perspective “Forget the risks.” Leah waved my entire hard-earned article away. “What does it say about a mother’s parenting?” Gingerly (I didn’t want to be one of those moms), I probed for more, “to help my readers understand.” “Look, I agree that baby monitors provide some responsible freedom of movement around the house and area while protecting the baby’s safety,” she concurred. “But not everything about child-rearing is only about safety. Sometimes it’s about building a healthy parent-child relationship, and that starts at infanthood with these seemingly trivial instances.” I didn’t want my relationship with my children to be irrevocably damaged by a 6-inch gadget, so I probed some more. “I understand that it’s convenient,” she patiently explained. “But it must do something to your inner sense of what hands-on parenting looks like. It makes remote parenting okay. It takes away your sensitivity to the importance of your presence and actually being there. Instead, you’re parenting through a screen.” I have so much to say to that, but… word count. Can’t say I didn’t share all perspectives, though!

B u t D o I t R i g h t Look, as a last resort, you may sometimes decide to use a monitor. Here are a few things to keep in mind to maximize the safety if you do. · Check the monitor before every use, making sure it is picking up sounds properly (they don’t tend to warn you before they stop working). · Old-enough kids should know who is watching them remotely. · Do not leave very young children in beds that they can climb out of. · Make sure whoever has the monitor has a key, and that there’s a plan in place in the event a child suddenly wakes up, something happens, or the device disconnects. · Make sure the remote babysitter physically checks on

the kids and the house every once in a while. · For much safer monitoring, use a monitor that includes sound, video and temperature monitoring, and that allows one to speak to the children through it. These devices are not very expensive, and some even allow for remote rotation of the camera so the room can be viewed from every angle.

You’ve been well-educated on the safety of baby monitor use. On one foot: When used in conjunction with actual, in-person supervision, baby monitors are wonderful things! Here are a few popular monitor options, both basic and deluxe, and everything in between.

VTech DM221 Audio Baby Monitor This VTech monitor is still around, and with good reason. A very basic monitor at a very decent price point, this device is great when only auditory monitoring is important. All in all, it does what it’s meant to, and does it well. With long-range audio, this monitor detects sound up to 1,000 feet away, and its five-level sound LED indicator allows those supervising to visually monitor sounds in the baby’s room. This set also has intercom capabilities, which means parents can use their monitor to speak to their baby. Additionally, the baby unit boasts a nightlight, which can be controlled from the parent unit as well. While it takes a while to charge, the parent unit can operate on battery power for between nine and sixteen hours, depending on noise sensitivity settings. ON AMAZON:

Video Baby Monitor With Digital Camera by ANMEATE This monitor set, which is a step up from the basic audio monitor, also provides video and temperature monitoring. It works at a range of up to 960 feet and boasts multi-camera expandability. This device is fairly affordable, yet its camera can be zoomed in and tilted as well as remotely panned from left to right. The display is a clear LCD that allows you to see exactly what’s going on in your baby’s room, and the two-way microphone also allows you to speak to your baby. Additional features include four preloaded lullabies to calm the baby and eco-mode voice activation so the video turns on when the monitor picks up sound. The parent unit can monitor sound on a fully charged battery for about eight hours, and less than that when its video is on. ON AMAZON:

$57.99

Infant Optics DXR-8 Video Baby Monitor This award-winning and highly popular monitor has all the features of the monitor above, sans the preloaded lullabies, and then some. In addition to remote zoom, tilt and pan, this monitor boasts a separate lens that allows parents to zoom in on their child even more closely, with uncompromised video quality. The screen measures three and a half inches. The parent unit can run on battery alone for a robust ten to twelve hours on battery-saving audio mode, and for six to eight hours on regular video mode. The tradeoff, however, is that this device’s expected range is up to 700 feet versus the 1,000 feet in previous options, and its price point is considerably higher than that of more basic monitors. Additional cameras are available for purchase, with the parent unit auto-scanning between all paired cameras every ten seconds. ON AMAZON:

VTech VM350-2 Video Monitor This monitor is a mid-price model that boasts two cameras and a lovely five-inch LCD display. It also features four lullabies as well as five white noise options, and two-way talk. On the negative side, these cameras have no pan/tilt capabilities. While VTech promises very extended battery life and a range of up to 1,000 feet, reviewers claim that these numbers are rather optimistic. However, if the price point and screen size are pros enough, this might be the monitor for you. ON AMAZON:

Babysense Video Baby Monitor This baby monitor seems to be pretty new, but its reviews stand almost consistently at 5 stars. Just for additional comparison, two similar models by this brand have 4.3 stars, both with over 1,500 ratings each. This monitor is a bit pricier than the above models, but you’re getting better value since it already includes two cameras — both with 360-degree view and powerful zoom capabilities. Better yet, its parent unit boasts a split five-inch screen, so that you can continuously see both cameras’ views — think keeping an eye on two children! — at the same time. As in similar models, this monitor also boasts preloaded lullabies, a remotely controlled camera, two-way talk, and more. It’s parent unit operates on battery for between twelve and twenty hours, depending on the mode, and has a range of up to 960 feet. ON AMAZON:

Babysense Video & Baby Movement Monitor Bundle This is the ultimate monitor, with the device monitoring audio, video and breathing for those parents who’d like absolute peace of mind. This monitor set includes two sensor pads that get placed underneath the baby’s mattress to detect micro-movements, with the alarm going off if the sensors don’t pick up movement at all for twenty seconds or if they pick up less than ten movements in a minute. Keep in mind that the sensitivity of the sensors may need to be adjusted if there’s any other movement in the room like a fan or an open window. This set also includes a remotely controlled camera, and its additional features — including programmed lullabies, white noise, two-way talk capabilities and more — round out this monitor bundle. Expect an average range between the parent unit and the camera, and owners say the parent unit needs to be charged after approximately six hours on battery power. ON AMAZON:

It is easy to take for granted the access New Yorkers have to rivers and the ocean. While most of the U.S. is landlocked, with some states boasting only one open coast, New York is home to a staggering 500+ miles of waterfront in all directions.

As we settle in for a nice stretch of summer, we are excited to introduce this informative new column to our readers. In the weeks ahead, we will take a stroll along the waterfront and learn about the many islands — both famous and obscure — that make up the New York City landscape. 118

The truth is that any review of the islands around us would really have to begin with the city itself. Manhattan and Staten Island are famous stand-alone islands, while Brooklyn and Queens are part of the larger Long Island body of land. Only the Bronx is directly connected to the rest of the state and the country. Most New Yorkers already live on an Island, even if the Big Apple’s hustle and bustle is not what one would typically describe as “island life.” But these islands are not what we will be discussing. Instead, we will focus on some of the smaller islands that are part of our city, protruding forth from the rivers and bays surrounding us. How many are there in all? Well, it’s hard to say. You see, some islands only make their presence known during low

LIBERTY ISLAND tide, and others have joined neighboring bodies of land with the addition of landfills. Depending on how we calculate this, it’s fair to estimate that there are about forty different islands that are part of New York City! If these islands could talk, each would tell a story as rich and fascinating as New York itself. As part of one of the world’s largest natural harbors, they have been fought over, developed, abandoned, occupied, neglected, seen trash dumped all over them, and been witness to some hairraising tales. In the weeks ahead, we will learn about these small and rocky bits of land. This week, we will briefly review two islands you’ve surely learned about, before proceeding to the lesser known and fascinating in future installments. Enjoy the ride!

Liberty Island is so called, of course, because of the Statue of Liberty towering 305 feet above its surface. But the island’s history stretches back well before the arrival of the majestic statue. In fact, the island was only named Liberty Island in 1956, centuries after it had been utilized by settlers and, eventually, Americans. Liberty Island is located on the Hudson River, well inside the half of the river that belongs to the state of New Jersey. And while the island is not far from Jersey City, the island itself belongs to New York City and the borough of Manhattan. Interestingly, and with an arrangement that came about after much legal wrangling and lawsuits, only the above-water portions of the island are under New York control; the land that is submerged and the waters surrounding it do still belong to New Jersey. Utilities are handled by New Jersey, while taxes, mail and jurisdiction belong to New York City. In case that’s not confusing enough, the island is actually property of the federal government since 1801, originally as a military post and more recently as a national landmark. Since the mid-1600s, the island was mostly referred to as Bedloe’s Island after Dutch colonist Isaac Bedloe, who had purchased the land. It was also part of what was called the Oyster Islands due to the large

oyster population in the area that provided food for the locals. During the 1700s, the island was used by New York City to isolate and inspect passengers on visiting ships for diseases as well as a quarantine spot during a smallpox outbreak in 1755. In between, it was briefly used as a vacation home by Scottish noble Archibold Kennedy for one summer. In the early 1800s, it became a military post designed to protect the New York Harbor from British attack, and that’s when a large eleven-pointstar-shaped fort was built on Bedloe’s Island. The fort was to become the base for the Statue of Liberty later in the century. In 1871, sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi came to America to find the perfect spot for his statue celebrating the American centennial. He chose Bedloe’s Island. A few years later, the French political figure Edouard de Laboulaye, who had originated the idea of the statue as a gift to the U.S., formally requested permission to have the island serve as its host. On March 3, 1877, on his final full day as president, President Grant signed a resolution authorizing the president to accept the gift and choose a site for it. His successor, President Hayes, soon agreed to the Frenchman’s request. In the early 1880s, work began on the pedestal and, eventually, on the statue itself, until it was completed and dedicated in 1886. For a while, the American Museum of Immigration was located on the island, but it closed its doors when nearby Ellis Island opened a similar museum. Since 2019, it has become home to the Statue of Liberty Museum featuring exhibits and artifacts related to the statue’s history and legacy, with Lady Liberty’s original torch a featured attraction.

ELLIS ISLAND

The history of Ellis Island is the history of American immigration, or in many ways, America itself. From the 1890s to the early 1920s, over 10 million immigrants entered the United States through the island. By some estimates, 40% of Americans can trace at least one ancestor to the island’s immigration center! Like its neighbor Liberty, the island’s sovereignty has been hotly disputed by the states of New York and New Jersey. The same 1834 agreement gave both islands to New York despite being in Jersey waters. But here’s where things got messy. Over 22 of the island’s 27 acres were artificially built later on with landfill excavated to make way for local subway lines. These were located in water that clearly didn’t belong to New York, which meant that the land didn’t either. When the island was being redeveloped for tourists years later, the dispute over its control made it all the way to the Supreme Court. Eventually, the two states agreed to share jurisdiction of the entire island.

Ellis Island, located less than a mile north of Liberty Island, was once low-lying, muddy marshland that was called Gull Island by the Native Americans for the birds that inhabited it. When the Dutch settlers purchased the island, it became known as Little Oyster Island (as opposed to the larger Liberty Island nearby, mentioned above). The island was not good for much, and in the 1760s, when it was used to execute criminals and pirates, it was referred to as Gibbet Island after the gibbet, or gallow, used for this task. In 1774, the property was purchased by one Samuel Ellis. It was soon used by the U.S. military to fortify the New York Harbor and for other purposes during most of the 1800s. In 1890, the federal government designated the site to be used as an immigration processing center. After being in use for a few years, a large fire burned down the main building in 1897. The federal government then

went about expanding and rebuilding the immigration center, adding many amenities to accommodate the overflowing crowds. In the early 1920s Americans had become weary of the mass immigration that their own families had once benefited from, and strict quotas were placed on the number of immigrants admitted into the country. After that point, inspections were performed at the country of origin, and the more manageable number of arrivals were processed on their ships. As the work moved offshore, the island transitioned to serving mostly as a detention center and military station. In 1954, the island was officially closed by the federal government. Over the ensuing decades, various plans were floated to turn the island into a center of recreation, entertainment, trade or housing. None materialized, and in 1976, the main arrival hall was partially restored, allowing limited public access to Ellis Island. In 1990, the island reopened after undergoing significant renovation. Visitors enjoyed a beautiful museum along with tours of the island. Later, the government made public the Ellis Island records, providing another fascinating layer of history to the millions of visitors.

it's your mitzvah Earn your blessing Everyone knows that a married Jewish woman must cover her hair. But recent trends are making it obvious that many people don’t know one of the basic premises of the mitzvah: To lessen attraction. Sadly, many current wigs don’t meet this requirement. They attract attention – the opposite of what a head covering should do. Lace wigs, in particular, take this attraction to a new level. Dozens of Rabbonim from many communities have just issued a clear psak against the wigs. Their cry is unanimous. Lace front and top wigs are assur. The Rabbonim bless those who heed their call, with nachas & great bracha. Heed Daas Torah. Earn your blessing.

The Largest Revolutionary Battle What’s New York Got To Do With It?

This distinction goes to the Battle of Long Island, also

While it may seem like an event not only distant in time, but also distant geographically, a significant part of the Revolutionary War actually took place pretty close to home. Large areas of New York have been stomped on by both the Patriots and Loyalists as our nation fought for its independence.

This battle ended in a terrible defeat for Washington

Our state was, in fact, “a post of infinite importance,” as both General George Washington and British General William Howe saw it. John Adams, too, attributed great importance to New York, describing it as “a kind of key to the whole continent” for which “no effort to secure it ought to be omitted.”

It is estimated that close to a third of Revolutionary War skirmishes were fought in New York.

Unfortunately for the Continental Army, it was the British who held control of both New York City and its port for most of the war.

The Hudson River played an important role in this war. The fact that the Continental Army was able to control most of the Hudson allowed them access to the entire Hudson Valley while the British held strong in Manhattan. It also provided Washington with an escape route after the Patriots were driven out of New York City. The Battles of Saratoga in upstate New York went down in history as “the turning point of the war.” It was during these skirmishes that Washington’s men gained the upper hand, giving them a decisive lead over the British.

known as the Battle of Brooklyn. Some 40,000 soldiers fought in this battle; the Americans lost 2,200 men, while the British lost about 350. and his army, and the Continental Army retreated to Manhattan.

Today, Prospect Park and Greenwood Cemetery are both on the site of this historic battle.

Battle Hill, Brooklyn’s highest natural point, is part of Greenwood Cemetery. Upon its slopes was where the Patriots inflicted on the British the highest number of casualties.

Important Posts Then, Famous Sites Today West Point

Bear Mountain State Park

Years before the area became known for its military academy, West Point played a crucial role in the Revolution. High above the Hudson, overlooking an S-curve just 60 miles north of NYC, Washington referred to West Point as “the most important post in America.”

Fort Montgomery and nearby Fort Clinton in Stony Point were the scenes of a fierce battle for control of the Hudson. The Patriots, who were outnumbered, fought desperately until they were driven out of their forts.

West Point was fortified in 1778 by professional engineers and stayed in the Continental Army’s control throughout the war.

The Bear Mountain Bridge was built at this site. The remains of the 14-acre fortification that was built on a cliff overlooking the Hudson can be toured by visitors of the park. Hessian Lake at the foot of Bear Mountains is said to have been a place where hundreds of Hessians, who were German mercenaries hired by the British, were killed. Reports say that for some time after the skirmish, the water of the lake was red. In the past, this lake, originally Highland Lake, was known as Bloody Lake.

New Release from NEW FROM YONOSON ROSENBLUM

Rabbi Meir Schuster, the Unlikely Hero Who Helped Create a Movement and Change the World

R

abbi Meir Schuster was the most unlikely of outreach professionals. He was shy, tongue-tied, inarticulate and totally “uncool.” And yet, more than almost anyone, he brought Jews — thousands, perhaps tens of thousands — back to their Torah heritage. A Tap on the Shoulder brings us the stories (so many stories!) of the young men and women who traded their backpacks for Torah. It brings to life the decades when searching youth found meaning and a “baal teshuvah movement” was born. And it shows us how one man — with absolute dedication, boundless caring, and almost unbelievable siyata d’Shmaya — can change the world. One neshamah at a time.
