A TIMELY TOUR

(Re: Road Trip Through History, Issue 91) I’d like to comment on the tour of historical sites put together by Avrohom Levi. It was really fascinating to virtually visit and learn about these spots. Rich in history and information, it was a very timely read. Your magazine always hits the mark! M.S.

(Re: Alone at Home, Issue 91) I was gratified to read your article about baby monitors. I, too, have heard monitor horror stories, and I appreciate the awareness you brought, which I hope people will apply for safer parenting. Personally, I’ve never given the idea much thought, simply because it’s not an option for me. I can never be confident enough that my kids will actually sleep through any stretch of time… But allow me, please, to chime in with some pointers as someone who sometimes “listens in” for others (via a door that connects my apartment with my neighbor’s) so you can make the task a little more pleasant. 1. Please inform the “listener” at what time you are expected back. It’s often the nights when I am planning to turn in early that I suddenly find myself unable to do so, without knowing when my vigil will end.

2. Unless you explicitly ask your neighbor to babysit while “monitoring,” please do not leave children who are bound to wake up. How surprised I once was to hear my neighbor’s baby begin to howl for her mother; it hadn’t occurred to me that she’d leave a ten-month-old behind. My nights are busy, and when babysitting is not on schedule, such impositions cause some resentment on my part. 3. Leave a contact number, and keep your phone on you. And unless this is a mutual agreement, the right thing to do if your kid wakes up and will not go to sleep is to come home. In the middle of an event? Well, that’s why most of us hire a babysitter. NOW BEARING THE BEARS

(Re: Sharing Our World Safely, Issue 90) Thank you so much for your coverage on summertime bear visits to residential areas. Ever since they’ve become more rampant, I’m always so nervous about coming across one while in wooded areas. It was so good to read that despite our great fear surrounding bears, they’re quite harmless for the most part, and the fatalities are literally at an average of less than one annually in the U.S. May Hashem protect us wherever we are and whatever we come to face with, but this was a very reassuring read. N.M.

YOUR VOICE BEWARE OF THE WATER

My daughter recently broke out in an itchy rash that started spreading over much of her body, and though at first I suspected it to be heat rash, it just kept getting worse. After a few days, I realized that there was an infection going on from all the scratching, and I took her to the doctor. The doctor said he is seeing a lot of this type of rash; it is caused by microorganisms that proliferate in swimming pools that are not properly maintained. My daughter was put on antibiotics and is now healing. I’m sharing this information to alert parents whose children may have also spontaneously broken out in “eczema.” Additionally, I’m asking those who maintain pools and oversee day camps to please make sure that a professional is on top of keeping the pool chemically balanced! Thank you, B.F.

PARSHAS MATOS-MASEI Let’s Win the Lottery!

The pasuk prefaces the detailed review of Klal Yisroel’s travels, “Those are the journeys of Bnei Yisroel who left the land of Mitzrayim” (Masei 33:1). The goal of the travels was to reach Eretz Yisroel. If so, why didn’t the pasuk refer to their destination rather than their starting point? DAVID* WAS AN ardent chassid of Reb Menachem Mendel of Kotzk. He used to travel to his Rebbe often, but in time, his visits to Kotzk grew sporadic. A long while passed, and the once-frequent guest didn’t grace his Rebbe’s court. Then, one day, David decided to retrace the familiar route to Kotzk. Inside the Rebbe’s room, David discovered that the Rebbe had noticed his absence. “Where have you been all this time?” the Rebbe asked. David lowered his head and quietly shared his story. He worked with honey, and lately, he had taken to selling a synthetic version, marketing it as the real thing. He was embarrassed to admit that he was involved in a serious scandal. “How could I stand before the Rebbe who is one piece of truth,” David said, “when I know that I am so heavily involved in falsehood and fraud?” The tears began running down David’s face. He was terribly ashamed.

36

The Boro Park View

July 7, 2021

www.thebpview.com · 718.408.8770

What could the Rebbe do to save his chassid from drowning entirely in the sea of dishonesty? With his legendary astuteness, the Kotzker cleverly threw him a rope. “Tell me, how much money would you be willing to give up to avoid sheker? Six groschen?” The chassid thought and said, “Yes, for six groschen I wouldn’t cheat.” “Fine,” the Rebbe said. “From today and on, don’t sell the fake honey — unless your profit will be more than an extra six groschen per jar. If you can earn seven groschen more for the fake honey, you can sell it. After all, you do need to make a living… Just don’t ruin your name for six groschen.” David agreed. He was ready to commit to this mini step. In the days that followed, David held true to his word, and the next time he returned to the Rebbe, he shared his success.

“Wonderful!” the Rebbe said. “Now that you’ve gotten used to judging your actions well, I think we are ready for the next step! Can you hold yourself back from selling fake honey even if there is an added profit of seven groschen?” The Kotzker explained that if his chassid were to continue to limit his fraudulent activity grosch by grosch, he would eventually succeed at extracting himself completely from dishonesty. David was relieved. It was hard to be mired in wrongdoings! He really did want to opt out, and he felt lucky that his moreh derech was guiding him and helping him to do so. He followed the carefully laid-out process, and in time, he was happy to reach his goal. To his amazement, the books indicated that his shift didn’t detract from his profit. On the contrary! He had earned a lot more by selling only pure, refined honey. He developed a name for himself as an honest, reliable vendor, and he had

more customers than ever before. David went to Kotzk to share his achievement. “I’ve finally arrived at the truth!” he exclaimed. The Rebbe was happy with the report, but quickly channeled his chassid’s enthusiasm. “Until now, you’ve distanced yourself from sheker,” the Rebbe said. “But there’s still a long road ahead of you until you reach proper emes! If you continue in the direction you are going, however, you will succeed, and you will acquire the deepest implication of truth.” * * * * * This story is a stellar lesson in “Sur meira, v’aseh tov.” Sometimes a person will distance himself from falsehood, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s attained truth. Our method of teshuvah involves multiple steps. First we need to leave behind the bad, and only then can we begin to work on conquering the good.

The Malbim explains that when Bnei Yisroel left Mitzrayim, they left behind the filthy levels of tumah that surrounded them. Indeed, it was a huge step. But that didn’t necessarily mean they were up to entering Eretz Yisroel! They still had a long way to go in terms of achieving a level of kedushah pure enough that they would be worthy of living in such a holy land. As the Yidden traveled and encamped in the Midbar, they were still under the influence of the impurity of Mitzrayim. They still needed to get rid of the effects of the Egyptian pollution they had breathed in for so long. Slowly, through their 40 years of wandering and their 42 encampments in the Midbar, the Yidden came closer to their goal. And only then were they prepared enough to live in the Eretz Hakedosha. *Not his real name. **Adapted from the teachings of Rav Mordechai Freundlich, z”l.

Did You Know? The first destination on Klal Yisroel’s route was Ramses. Here the city is referred to with a sheva under the ayin, which means the place is pronounced Ra’emses. In Shemos, the pasuk mentions Pisom and Ramses, and there, the ayin has a pasach – Ra’amses. The Even Ezra comments that they were two separate cities. Ra’emses is another name for Goshen, where the Yidden lived in Mitzrayim, and from this point, they departed for the Midbar. The Ra’amses of Parshas Shemos, however, refers to the treasure cities that Klal Yisroel built for Paroh. The Yidden did not live there.

CHAPTER 15 RECAP: On his quest to investigate the fates of the husbands of Poland’s agunos, Rav Shloime Strasbourg meets with Shabbesai Tzvi. After talking in learning, Shabbesai Tzvi asks Rav Shloime if they can have a confidential conversation.

“O

f course,” Rav Shloime replied. “Do you believe that the suffering of our people in Poland was part of the birth pangs of Moshiach?” asked Shabbesai Tzvi. “The possibility was discussed.” “Did you yourself or your family suffer at the hands of the Cossacks?” Rav Shloime replied with a simple nod of his head, but the painful expression that passed across his face answered the question more accurately. “I see what is in your heart, Rav Shloime,” said Shabbesai Tzvi in a voice full of compassion, “and I share your pain. Whenever I meet someone who has survived the terrible pogroms in Poland, my heart is once again torn to shreds. I have shed many a tear over this great tragedy that has befallen our People. May the Almighty avenge the innocent blood of those who gave their lives to sanctify His Holy Name.” He reached into his pocket and withdrew a small vial. “This vial contains my tears of sorrow over the exile of our people,” he said. “It’s my most precious treasure.”

42

He brought the vial to his lips and put it away. Rav Shloime watched in silent wonder. “Look what I’m wearing,” cried Shabbesai Tzvi. He undid his robes to reveal a blood-red garment. Then he opened a lacquered case that lay on the table and withdrew his small Torah scroll. It, too, was wrapped in a blood-red mantle. He picked up a book from the table and held it out to Rav Shloime. It was the recently published Tzok Ha’itim, a heartrending account of the Cossack atrocities in Poland and the Ukraine. “The innocent Jewish blood that was spilled,” said Shabbesai Tzvi in a voice sizzling with intensity, “is always on my mind. But the day of vengeance draws near. Oh, yes! It draws near. Do you believe that, Rav Shloime?” “Do you mean that Moshiach is on his way?” asked Rav Shloime, intently scrutinizing Shabbesai Tzvi’s face. “Yes!” Rav Shloime drew a deep breath and plunged ahead. “Some people say that you are Moshiach.” A cunning look appeared in Shabbesai Tzvi’s eyes, along with another

look that flashed through so quickly, it was almost as if it had never been there. “There will come a day when the whole world will know it,” he whispered conspiratorially, “but now it is only known to a few. Feel privileged that I speak to you of these things, Rav Shloime, and thank Yechiel Hapolani for describing you as an honorable man. Hear my words. Let them be etched forever into your heart. I, Shabbesai Tzvi, will bring an end to this dark and bitter exile, and you will live to see it.” “But how can you be the redeemer of the Jewish people if you do forbidden things such as uttering the Shem Hameforash?” “Such an act is indeed forbidden, a very serious transgression, but only for ordinary people, not for Moshiach. All the laws with which we are familiar are part of the outward form of the Torah, but the inner form is full of the deepest mysteries. Black fire upon sheets of white fire. The outward form of the Torah applies to all of our people, but Moshiach’s soul is of a higher nature. Moshiach lives by the inner force, the essence of the Torah, something inconceivable to ordinary people.” “Is it conceivable that our beloved and respected rabbis will be against Moshiach?” “It is more than conceivable. It is the fate of Mashiach to suffer, because his suffering will bring the Redemp-

tion that much closer. In the beginning, the voice of Moshiach will be like a voice in the wilderness, but in time, it will ring out from one end of the world to the other, and his light will illuminate the world. There will yet come a day when the rabbis will pay homage to me.” Suddenly, Shabbesai Tzvi’s mood shifted, and he began to hum a soft, melodious tune. He smiled warmly and turned the conversation back to the sugya they had been discussing earlier. Rav Shloime returned again the following night. Shabbesai Tzvi was not immediately ready to see him, and while he waited, he struck up a conversation with Mordechai Tzvi. “You know, from the very first, my wife and I knew that Shabbesai was different,” mused the old man, watching Rav Shloime’s face closely as he spoke. “Even as a young child he had visions and dreams unlike any I had ever heard. He had no interest in ordinary childhood pursuits, only learning Torah from early in the morning until his eyes closed from weariness at night. He was like an angel sent from Heaven. We thanked the Almighty for the special gift he had entrusted to us for safekeeping. My other children are grown and have gone out into the world. My son Eliyahu is one of the wealthiest merchants in Smyrna, and a learned man as well. But Shabbesai, my brightest child, is persecuted and driven from one city to the next. You have heard that, haven’t you?” Rav Shloime nodded. “According to what I have heard, they objected to some of his rather unusual practices,” he replied carefully. “What do they know? What do they understand?” fumed the old man, his voice rising, his face turning red. “My son is a great man, a brilliant man. His exalted soul was taken from under the Heavenly Throne in the highest spheres of Heaven. The others do not understand him, but someday they will. Someday, the whole world will know the name of Shabbesai Tzvi.” “I am sure they will,” said Rav Shloime uneasily. “What they have done to my child is a crime. A crime! My son was driven from Smyrna by our narrow-minded rabbis who could not understand that he was different, that he could not be judged by the same standards as ordinary people. Then they sent letters to Salonika and Constantinople turning the people of those cities against him as well. He came home nearly three years ago like a bird with a broken wing and has been in seclusion ever since. He has refused to see anyone, aside from a few of his trusted followers, such as your host Yechiel Hapolani. You are the first outsider he has consented to see. I take this as a good sign, a sign that he is finally recovering from his illness.” “I am honored.” “You are indeed honored. But I warn you, do not repay his trust with treachery, or you will suffer the same fate as all of the other enemies of my son.” Rav Shloime stayed in Smyrna for two more weeks, during which he visited Shabbesai Tzvi several times. For the most part, they discussed difficult sugyos in the Talmud. Rav Shloime never ceased to be impressed by the breadth of Shabbesai Tzvi’s knowledge, the depth of his understanding, and the sheer force of his personality. From time to time, however, the strange, haunted look would flash from the smoldering depths of Shabbesai Tzvi’s eyes, and it would seem for a moment as if a dark spirit had wrapped its cloak about him. On the long, lonely journey back to Poland, Rav Shloime struggled with the tumultuous questions in his mind, but he could not reach a satisfactory conclusion. On the one hand, he found Shabbesai Tzvi’s violations of the Torah deeply disturbing and his explanation of his behavior difficult to accept. But on the other hand, the man was obviously a phenomenal Torah scholar uninterested in worldly pleasures. The powerful magnetism of his personality was undeniable. But there was something about his eyes. Something disturbing.

Mold be gone.

What was it? As soon as he returned to Pulichev, Rav Shloime wrote to Yankiv Tomashov describing his meetings with Shabbesai Tzvi and his conflicting impressions. Perhaps this extraordinary man was actually Moshiach. Perhaps not. He did not know the answer. Only time and events would provide a satisfactory answer. Three months later, Rav Shloime received a letter from Yechiel thanking him for the impartial report he had given Yankiv Tomashov. “The Master has emerged from seclusion,” wrote Yechiel. “By the time you receive this letter, the Master will have sailed for Egypt, and I with him. We will be staying in the home of Refael Yosef Chelebi. His family is originally from Aleppo in Syria, also known as Chalab or Aram Sobah. Today, he is the most prominent Jew in Cairo.” *****

Wedged between Saladin’s citadel high in the Mokattam Hills and the majestic blue waters of the Nile River, the city of Cairo lay like a spectacular tapestry of ancient walls and slender towers, of palaces and mosques with delicately carved domes and minarets, of private gardens and public squares. On the southern horizon, the fabled pyramids of Egypt bore silent witness to the countless generations that had inhabited the fertile Nile valley. Thousands of families lived within the walls of the Jewish quarter, most of them crowded into small dwellings along the narrow streets. Strikingly different, however, was the private residence of Refael Yosef Chelebi, treasurer to the Turkish governor of Egypt and the leading Jewish citizen of Cairo. The House of Chelebi was a sprawling, picturesque building set amid elaborate formal gardens and completely enclosed by a wrought-iron fence. Constructed as a great square around a spacious open courtyard, the lower story was of soft white stone, the upper story of painted white brick. A fountain in the center of the courtyard whispered playfully beneath a decorated lantern. The walls were lined with richly inlaid cabinets, the windows shaded with cornices of graceful woodwork and ornamented with stained glass. In spite of his great wealth and exalted position, Refael Yosef Chelebi was a humble and devout man. He prayed for several hours each day, and he fasted regularly. Beneath his rich silken robes, he wore a garment of the roughest sackcloth. Fifty Torah scholars graced his table at every meal, and a steady stream of poor people passed through his kitchen from morning to night. Refael Yosef Chelebi was a learned man, and in his heart, he harbored an abiding love for Kabbalah. As soon as he heard that Shabbesai Tzvi intended to come to Cairo, Refael Yosef Chelebi wrote to him, offering the hospitality of his home. His first meeting with Shabbesai Tzvi made a profound impression on him, and from that moment, it was as if the house belonged to Shabbesai Tzvi and Refael Yosef Chelebi was the guest. He gave Shabbesai Tzvi his own private quarters and his rightful place at the head of his own table. Yechiel Hapolani and the other disciples who had accompanied Shabbesai Tzvi to Cairo were also provided with respectable quarters. To be continued…

Biden Asks To Meet Surfside Tehillim Girl A Jewish girl’s Tehillim for her missing father at the Surfside building collapse site has touched the heart of yet another elected official, with President Joe Biden asking to meet the twelveyear-old during a visit to Florida last week. VIN News reported that Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett shared the story of seeing a young girl, later identified as Elisheva Cohen, praying at the wreckage on multiple occasions, promising that he would do everything possible to offer his support in the wake of the horrific tragedy. The story made international headlines, and the Associated Press reported that after hearing her story, the president asked to be introduced to Elisheva on a visit to Surfside last Thursday. Elisheva’s father, Dr. Brad Cohen, and her uncle, Dr. Gary Cohen, were both in an eleventh floor condominium at the time of the tragedy, while Elisheva and her mother, Soroya Cohen, were in a different building when Champlain Towers crumbled to the ground. Soroya Cohen told the media that she had texted a picture of Elisheva to her husband just before he went to sleep, noting it was probably the last thing he saw. As of Sunday afternoon, 22 people were confirmed dead in the collapse, but a small glimmer of positivity emerged from Surfside as authorities reduced the number of people still unaccounted for from 145 to 128. Some names on the list had been reported in both Hebrew and English and turned out to be duplicates, while others turned up safe in other locations. Rescue efforts paused last weekend as crews prepared to demolish the unstable remnants of Champlain Towers, with the building coming down in a controlled implosion at 10:30 Sunday night. Search teams were back at work before midnight making their way through the rubble toward areas of interest that had previously been blocked. Residents who survived the collapse had begged authorities for the chance to return to their condominiums to retrieve at least some of their belongings. Those requests were denied, given the building’s instability, and Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava told families to make lists of their possessions so that anything found in the ruins could be returned to them. Sixty-two-year-old Susana Alvarez made it safely out of her tenth-floor unit with nothing but her pajamas and her phone, and friends and strangers have been helping her over the past week, buying her clothes and finding her a place to stay. Her eyeglasses were replaced by a local store even though she never even called in her prescription, but given the magnitude of the tragedy, Alvarez’s thoughts are with those who have yet to be found. “I lost everything, but it doesn’t mean anything to me,” said Alvarez. Meanwhile, several miles away, an audit of North Miami Beach’s Crestview Towers found the building to be structurally and electrically unsafe. The building, which was built in 1972 and sustained $8.1 million worth of damage during Hurricane Irma in 2017, was ordered closed immediately, with residents

of all 156 units evacuated for their own protection. City officials said that a full structural assessment was being conducted and that residents were removed from the building “in an abundance of caution.”

Schumer Joins Fight To Save Jewish Toddler’s Life The battle to save the life of a two-year-old British girl with brain damage continues, with a United States senator announcing that the toddler had been issued a visa that would allow her to be brought across the Atlantic for treatment. Hamodia reported that the parents of Alta Fixsler have been in court for weeks trying to stop a Manchester hospital from disconnecting her from life-sustaining medical equipment. The British court has already denied the Fixsler’s request that they be allowed to keep their daughter alive in keeping with Jewish law, refusing to accept the premise that Alta would accept her parents’ religious beliefs if she were old enough to do so, since she is cognitively impaired. New York Senator Chuck Schumer has been advocating on Alta’s behalf, sending a letter last week to the United Kingdom’s ambassador to the United States, Karen Pierce, notifying her that he was working on arranging citizenship papers on the little girl’s behalf, as the daughter of an American father. Schumer asked Pierce to suspend any health decisions in the case until that time so that Alta could travel to the United States for treatment, and he announced last Friday that the potentially lifesaving visa was in place. “All the Fixslers want is to follow their faith and get their little girl the best care in the process,” said Schumer. “The images of little Alta make your heart melt, and to know just how much her parents love her inspires us to do all we can to ensure her best chance. Aside from this federal action of securing a visa, I also offer my most fervent prayers to her and her family.” The United Kingdom has already refused requests to allow Alta, whose mother holds Israeli citizenship, to be taken to Israel for treatment, with doctors insisting that the little girl is suffering and it would be more humane to remove her from life support and let her die. Ten Republican senators have sent separate letters to President Joe Biden asking him to intercede with English Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Alta’s behalf. A group of philanthropists have arranged a medical transport that would fly the Fixslers to the United States, and UJO of Williamsburg’s Rabbi David Niederman credits Schumer for his round-the-clock efforts on Alta’s behalf. “Please allow the child to come to the United States, into the welcoming hands of the Jewish community here, who will do all we can to save her life,” said Rabbi David Niederman of UJO of Williamsburg. “We remind the British government that saving one life is akin to saving the entire world.” Those thoughts were echoed by Rabbi Moshe Margaretten of

Tzedek Association, who added that the court’s refusal to consider the Fixsler’s religious beliefs flies in the face of decency and discriminates against the disabled. “This is about saving a life, which everyone, no matter their politics, should believe in,” said Rabbi Margaretten. “We ask the UK government to similarly respect the sanctity of life and the family’s wishes.”

Board of Elections Bungles Mayoral Vote Count Predictions of confusion and inaccuracies in New York City’s first rankedchoice vote appear to have come true, with officials retracting results in the mayoral race just hours after they were released. The Associated Press reported that the Board of Elections released a first round of results in the mayoral race last

Tuesday, placing the Brooklyn borough president firmly ahead of former sanitation commissioner Kathryn Garcia. But hours later the BOE said that it had neglected to clear 135,000 test ballots from its system, slashing Adams’ lead to less than 16,000 votes. Corrected totals were released on Wednesday, along with an apology from the BOE, which said, “We must regain the trust of New Yorkers. We will continue to hold ourselves accountable and apologize to New York City voters for any confusion.” Final results may be weeks away as the BOE processes 125,000 previously uncounted absentee ballots.

NYC’s Traffic Worst in Nation, Says Study Move over LA, after 30 years of holding the dubious distinction of having the worst traffic in the country; the Big Apple has now earned the number-one

spot, with drivers from New York to Newark logging an average of 56 hours stuck in traffic last year. That information comes from Texas A&M Transportation Institute’s 2021 Urban Mobility Report, reported The Drive. The large number of people working at home during COVID-19 had traffic receding for some time, but even as life gets back to normal, Big Apple residents leery of using public transportation have been using their cars to commute to work, with the increased number of drivers clogging local roads. California’s stringent COVID-19 policies and its lack of public transportation both factor in Los Angeles slipping to fourth place in the report, falling behind Boston and Houston, where drivers spent an average of 50 and 49 hours on congested roadways. By comparison, San Diego, Phoenix and Miami came in at the lower end of the spectrum with 24, 25 and 27 hours, respectively. Experts expect Los Angeles to make its way back to first place by next year as the state continues its reopenings.

CHAPTER FIFTEEN RECAP: Bassi,

Sarah Reiness’ sister, has recently moved to a developing moshav in the Galilee and is overwhelmed with all the logistics. Osher develops a habit of watching Rabbi Reiness walk on the beach late at night. Osher joins him one night.

A

ryeh’s car stopped near the house, and five sweaty, scraggly-looking children burst out. “We’re here! I remember it exactly here!” one of them cried, and dashed up the stairs. “Oops!” A young man, who almost collided with the boy, stuck out his arm to block his path. “Is that how you run, without looking where you’re going or anything? We both almost went tumbling down the stairs! Where are you rushing to?” “To our aunt!” the boy said. “Your aunt?” “Aunt Sarah!” the child said, his tone clearly implying what he thought of this creature who had not heard of his aunt. “Oh.” The young man pressed himself against the railing, and the child didn’t wait another second. He knocked loudly at the door and pushed it open, his siblings trailing behind. Their father, still downstairs, shook the hand of Reb Elazar, who’d emerged from the carpentry shop accompanied by three youths. “Bli ayin hara, a real crew you’ve got here!” Aryeh said to his brother-in-law. The boys nodded politely and then slipped away. “Look who’s talking!” Elazar Reiness said, looking at the cheerful face that peeked out over the railing from the second floor. “Who is that — Baruch? Hey, kiddo! The railing isn’t very high! Be careful!”

“Yes, he’s not used to such heights,” Aryeh said as he and his brother-in-law headed for the stairs. “So what is this, Elazar? Have you opened an institution? Why did you come all the way here for a carpentry shop? Nu, come on. You can’t tell me stories.” “I’m not telling anyone such stories!” Elazar chuckled. “Certainly not to you, the vegetarian guy who migrated from civilized Tzefas to some hole in the wall in the Galilee. ‘Middle of the forest,’ Sarah calls it.” “I’m not quite that vegetarian,” Aryeh protested. “Bassi hasn’t had much success with me on that front, and she’s been trying for years. But what can I tell you? The children’s coughing has improved drastically since we left the rental in Tzefas.” “Who are your neighbors?” “Eleven families, some of them American. We’re actually quite close to Tzefas — about twenty minutes away — and it’s really not in the middle of the forest. Maybe ‘edge of the woods’ is more like it.” “And you like it there.” “You can say that, baruch Hashem. There are regular settling-in struggles, and I don’t see how we’re getting permits for the new place so fast, and the children’s transportation to school is not so simple…” He paused for a moment and then smiled. “But Hashem will help. You know, Bassi needs this type of place. It does her good.” “And you don’t feel the need to be part of an organized community?” “We?” Aryeh looked amusedly at his brother-in-law. “What about you?” “I’m an old man already,” Elazar Reiness said, brushing off the question. “It’s less important for Sarah and me. Our lives are full enough that we can manage without the standard environment. But you’re still young.” “That’s why we send the kids to school in Tzefas, and that’s why we established this new settlement so close to there.” Aryeh found himself feeling defensive. His brother-in-law noticed and hurried-

ly changed the subject. “I’m a terrible host, stopping you in the middle of the stairs without inviting you inside. Come, come, Sarah is probably giving the kids all the nosh she found in the store. “I mean, nosh like dates and almonds and craisins, of course,” he hastened to add. “And next time you come, we want to host your family.” “You’ll have to speak with Bassi about that,” Aryeh said. He followed his brother-in-law into the house. “She’s enjoying the settlement so much that right now, she will find all the excuses in the world

“You didn’t hear us talking to him? He’s the boy who was just here,” Gadi said. “The one who went downstairs. And we did nothing to him, Tatty.” “Did you say something to him?” their father asked. “Yisrael Meir?” His son was busy gazing out at the open sea. “Yisrael Meir wasn’t with us, Tatty,” Gadi said airily. “He ran up right away and since then he’s been at the window.” “So let’s go back to you, Gadi,” Aryeh said. “Nu, what was it?” “It was the twins, Tatty, not me! Actually, not both of them — just Daniel.” “Shh… lashon hara!” Rabbi Reiness said, looking at the four-year-old pair sitting on kitchen chairs with remarkably innocent faces. They were busy licking the chocolate from the cookies their aunt had given them. “I just asked him what his name is,” Daniel said. “And what did he say?” Reb Elazar wanted to know. “He has such a funny name! There is no such name!” “Of course there’s such a name,” Reb Elazar said. “Didn’t you ever learn the parsha about the shevatim? Reuven, Shimon… what was Gad’s brother’s name?” He winked at his nephew. “Asher,” Daniel replied. He looked at his twin, Arik, who was very busy with his cookies. “So we can say that ‘Osher’ is just another way of saying ‘Asher.’ Just like some people might pronounce ‘Yisrael Meir’ as ‘Yisruel Mayer.’” The boy shrugged. “Did you laugh at him, Gadi? Did you hurt his feelings?” his father asked. “Of course not!” Gadi protested. “The twins just laughed a little bit, so they made me laugh too.” Elazar Reiness went over to the open door of the house. Aryeh Berg turned to follow him. “Should they go downstairs and apologize?” he whispered. “He’ll get over it,” the older man said, his expression serious. He gazed out somewhere in the yard for a few seconds,

“He should teach his kids some manners,” Osher blurted, and then dashed down the stairs.

not to get away.” Someone slipped through the door, heading outside; he nodded curtly at the two men on his way. “Have you met our guests yet, Osher?” Reb Elazar asked with a smile. “My nephews. And this is my brother-in-law, their father.” “He should teach his kids some manners,” Osher blurted, and then dashed down the stairs. “Hey!” Aryeh called after Osher, but he was already downstairs and didn’t glance back even when called. Rabbi Reiness and his guest walked into the house. Inside, he could see Sarah bustling about, handing out food to the children. “No Bamba,” she said. “Your mother will be angry at me. Are almonds good? What about dates?” “We’re allowed to have Bamba here, Aunt Sarah,” Aryeh said. “Their mother lets. But maybe they don’t deserve it for a different reason. What did you do to Osher, kids?” “Osher?” asked Baruch, a seriouslooking bespectacled first grader.

and then smiled and turned back to his concerned brother-in-law. “Hashem sent him this challenge, and he should be able to handle it. Even though he is quite sensitive.” They went back into the kitchen, and Sarah invited Aryeh to sit down and eat something. “I’m not sending any of this to Bassi,” Sarah said. “She’d faint to see bourekas and kugels and all kinds of other terrible things. You’ll have to eat it all here.” “Thank you so much,” Aryeh said gratefully. “Boys, maybe you should go down to the yard to find Osher. Tell him that now you know that he has a holy name!” The four boys obediently headed to the door. Only Yisrael Meir, who had finally moved away from the window and was now reading a book, didn’t join them. Reb Elazar took a plate of food for himself and sat down at the table. “You should come more often,” he said to Aryeh. “Two sisters, and they hardly get to see each other…” “You can come to us, too, you know!” “Maybe when you make a chanukas habayis.” “We’ll do that, b’ezras Hashem, when we see that we’re staying there permanently.” “In the meantime, though, are you happy?” “You could say so. One thing is for sure about our new location: Life is much cheaper than in Tzefas, or in Acco, for that matter…” “The prices of apartments in Acco vary with the location,” Reb Elazar said. “You know how much people want to pay for this old house?” “Nu?” “A lot.” “What’s so special about it?” “Amazing view, no?” Elazar chuckled. “Aren’t there other places with such nice views?” “Sure there are.” “So why…?”

called me to find out if it could come through us.” Yigal sighed. “Why doesn’t Ariella want to listen?” “I don’t know. These past few years, she hasn’t been very enthusiastic about remarrying, but when she flew off three weeks ago for that shidduch in Belgium, I thought she’d come around. She seemed quite ready.” “But it didn’t happen.” He sighed. “No,” she agreed. “And we have no idea why.” He was quiet for a long moment. “And what does that have to do with the trip to Acco?” “I had hoped that maybe we could push her to explore this shidduch that Zahava suggested. I heard some wonderful things about this person…” “How successful do you think we can be at pushing Ariella into something if she insists on turning her head to the other side each time the topic is brought up?” “Not too successful...” Irit was close to tears. “But that doesn’t mean we have to lose hope!” “If you ask me, I think the trip to Acco is a ray of hope. Some type of movement, a change, so she’s not just sitting at home, depressed, in her little place… She hasn’t been looking or sounding good these past few days…” Yigal fiddled with the window blinds. “Don’t you agree?” “Okay, so let’s say she goes to Acco. How is she going to find Osher? How will she find out more about Reiness? Will she go knocking on people’s doors or what?” “Are you worried about Ariella, queen of improvisations and creative solutions? Do you think she won’t be able to find out where Osher is? She has an exact address and everything she needs!” “It’s still complicated.” “Not for her. Her brain is wired differently from ours; we’ve established that long ago. She’ll get the job done.”

“Are you worried about Ariella, queen of improvisations and creative solutions?”

“Why did I buy this house? And why am I refusing to sell it? Because I have an interest here,” he said simply. “And if you have any connection with Horowitz from Tzefas — he told me you know each other — I’d appreciate if you can tell him to please leave me alone, Aryeh. I’m not planning to sell this place in the next year or two.” “And after that?” “Maybe the views will be beautiful somewhere else…” ***** Yigal Erenbaum hung his hat on the nickel hook and turned to his wife. He nodded, and she gasped. “Rabbi Gutfreund said she should go to Acco?” “Yes. He heard everything I told him about Osher and about Reiness. He is still of the opinion that we should not chase after Osher, but he agreed that the details we heard are sketchy and need more clarification. So Ariella can go and try to find out more about what’s going on.” “He said she should go?” “Yes. He’s aware of her situation, you know. He claims that she might need to get away for a little while, have a change of scenery.” “So she should go to Acco?” “Why not? Let’s use the opportunity. She seems very happy to go. We’ll just need to find out about renting a room in the home of a frum family.” “I…” Irit groped for words. “I just finished talking to Ariella’s friend Zahava. She wants to suggest a shidduch for her.” “Fine. So let her suggest it.” “Apparently, Ariella doesn’t want to hear about anything right now, so she

The earlier poskim have already ruled that when a woman wears a wig, it must be in a manner that it is recognizable as a covering and does not look like it is her actual hair, chas veshalom, which would run counter to the very concept of this mitzvah. We are shaken to hear that there has recently developed in Chutz La’aretz a new style of wigs made in a way that those who see it think that it is a woman’s actual hair. These wigs are called: Lace Top/Cap or Lace Front Wigs. Unfortunately, some women have begun to wear this wig even in Eretz Yisrael. So, we have come to add our opinion to that of the leading Poskim in America and elsewhere, that have come out with a clear prohibition against it. We hereby announce that according to daas Torah this is an uprooting of the mitzvah to cover one’s hair; it runs counter to the rules of tznius and to the appearance of a Jewish daughter. This prohibition applies both to women wearing these wigs, additionally, to those who sell wigs; these wigs should not be sold—for they are causing other women to stumble. (We must make mention that this is besides the various other serious issues i.e. wearing long wigs etc. which was already discussed by our gedolim in the past and their severity is known.) The Torah states, “And He shall not see a shameful thing among you and turn away from behind you.” This means that through a failure to safeguard the rules of tznius, Hashem removes His Shechinah from our midst. The Chofetz Chaim has already declared that the greatest tragedy possible for Klal Yisrael is the removal of the Shechinah and Hashem’s protection from us—for this brings on all other tragedies, Rachmana litzlan. On the other hand, since the measure of goodness is greater than the measure of punishment, those who hold steadfast to the rules of tznius merit Heavenly protection and blessing, and sons who are talmidei chachomim and tzaddikim, as is explicit in the word of our holy Sages. And the Chofetz Chaim writes in Sefer Geder Olam that through a woman’s vigilance regarding tznius, she will have good in this world, and in the next world. She will merit to sit in the Higher World, in the chamber of Hashem with much splendor and grandeur. In the merit of the righteous women, we were redeemed previously; and in their merit, we will yet be redeemed, speedily and in our days, Amen.

BAKED ZITI 70

www.thebpview.com · 718.408.8770

BAKED ZITI The best part about baked ziti is that it’s not fussy. You don’t have to worry about delicate lasagna sheets or getting your layers perfect. It’s free-form, messy goodness at its best! This recipe does not require cooking the pasta separately, which means you’ll probably be making this on repeat, just like me.

Create the Vibe

INGREDIENTS 2 (24 oz.) jars pizza sauce 2 cups water 3–4 cups (about 12 oz.) Mehadrin shredded mozzarella cheese, divided 1 cup Mehadrin cottage cheese ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese, divided 1 lb. tube-shaped pasta (ziti)

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 425°. 2. Stir together the sauce, water, half the mozzarella cheese, all the cottage cheese and half the Parmesan cheese in a 9x13” pan or an oven-proof baking dish. 3. Place the pan or dish onto a rimmed baking sheet. 4. Stir in the uncooked ziti, making sure it’s submerged in the sauce mixture (the dish will be very full, so stir carefully). Cover the baking dish tightly with foil. 5. Bake for 50 minutes. 6. Uncover and continue baking until pasta is tender, about 20 minutes. 7. Stir the ziti mixture, then top with remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses. Continue baking, uncovered, for 10 minutes or until the cheese has melted.

FETTUCCINE ALFREDO 72

The Boro Park View

FETTUCCINE ALFREDO Fettuccine Alfredo is one of the most basic and delicious pasta recipes ever — and it couldn’t be easier to make!

INGREDIENTS 1 lb. fettuccine pasta ⅛ tsp. salt 6 T. butter 1 garlic clove, minced 1½ cups heavy cream 1¼ cups shredded Parmesan cheese, divided ¼ tsp. salt ¼ tsp. black pepper ½ box mushrooms, sliced (optional) 2 T. parsley (optional)

Feel the Energy

DIRECTIONS 1. Fill a large pot three-quarters full with water, and heat it over high heat until the water is boiling. Add ⅛ teaspoon salt. Add the fettuccine and cook it according to package instructions, and then drain. (Save some pasta water. It’s full of flavor and can be used to thin the sauce.) 2. In a large skillet or pan, heat the butter over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 to 2 minutes. 3. Stir in the heavy cream. Continue cooking for 5 to 8 minutes, allowing the cream to reduce. 4. Add half the Parmesan cheese, ¼ teaspoon salt and the black pepper to this mixture. Whisk well until the mixture is smooth. Add the mushrooms and continue whisking well over heat until the cheese is melted and mushrooms are soft. 5. Toss the sauce with the fettuccine pasta. If the sauce needs to be thinned, add a little pasta water. Add the rest of the Parmesan cheese, reserving a small amount for garnish.

“I was having an interesting issue with one of my children, and I felt I needed professional advice,” my friend Shprintzy told me one day. “Somebody I know consulted with Perl Abramovitz for parenting help, and she was given very practical, sound advice that helped a great deal. So I decided to give it a try too.” When she called Mrs. Abramovitz, however, Shprintzy had a hard time putting her finger on the issue. “It was difficult for me to even give her a description of my child because my daughter’s personality seemed to be changing. Who she was one day was not who she was the next. So Perl told me to send her a picture drawn by my daughter for analysis. When she called me back, I was floored by what she told me. She was able to figure out my kid better than I could!” Mrs. Abramovitz was able to pinpoint the child’s phobias, anxieties, strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, by looking at another two-minute scribble done by Shprintzy herself, she was able to pick up on her parenting style and suggest modifications that would help the child. Upon hearing about my friend’s experience, I was intrigued, though somewhat skeptical. I wondered what this was all about. And so I booked an appointment with Mrs. Abramovitz.

In Search of Underlying Issues Passing out paper and pencils, I settled my children at the table and told them that we were going to do an activity. As per instructions, I was told to have two types of drawings made: the first of a tree, and the second of waves under a starry sky. Watching the children work filled me with a sense of awe, for though they were all drawing according to the same instructions, each one handed in a very different end product — testament to their very different personalities and life experiences. When they were finished, I bundled up the pictures and

sent them to Mrs. Abramovitz. A few days later I called her at the pre-appointed time, and was greeted with a warm and friendly voice that immediately made me feel as if I were speaking with a caring friend. Before we began discussing the pictures, I wanted to know a little more about what she does. “So, is this considered art therapy?” I asked. “No. I do picture analysis,” she said. “Art therapy uses different mediums to help a child heal; it’s beautiful. There are different methods to help children draw how they feel and then discuss their feelings. What I do is something different. Picture analysis is a way to analyze a person. “Let’s say I say to you,” she continued, ‘If you want to know if someone is friendly, check if they have a smile.’ Does that make sense? No. That’s shallow; it’s much more complicated than that. “I look at a picture to try to understand a person’s underlying issues — what’s really going on. I look for the story behind who they are.” By reading the clues a person will unconsciously incorporate into their drawings, Mrs. Abramovitz said, she can often

As part of her initial training, Mrs. Abramovitz sat with the famous clinical psychotherapist Mrs. Miriam Adahan for several weeks, learning to recognize the hallmarks of various disorders as they appear on paper. “I can see things in the pictures that people don’t even realize they’re putting in. For instance, I use picture analysis as a sobriety test for addicts; somebody who is using certain substances will often draw the leaves on their trees in specific ways… I can also pick up if someone is going to be lying to me when we work together. That’s information I want to know when I meet someone.” Mrs. Abramovitz mentioned a woman who came to her office telling her that she was feeling very depressed, but based on her drawing, Mrs. Abramovitz didn’t see the signs of true depression. “It turned out to be anemia!” Following her training with Mrs. Adahan, Perl Abramovitz further honed her skills by finding common denominators between personality traits, skills, fears, histories and manners of thinking. “I have a very different type of brain,” she told me, explaining that as a person with dyslexia, she can deeply understand the minute nuances in pictures. “I like to tell kids with dyslexia that their biggest weakness is going to be their biggest strength.” Aside from astute senses and a caring heart, the tools of her trade involve a classic Bic pen and white computer paper, which she prefers clients use for their drawings in order to minimize variances that occur when using different brands. With the same tools used each time, the pressure and the way the strokes are formed are easier to gauge. Despite using these standard mediums, the results vary widely from person to person.

get to the root of an issue and then help the person through counseling. “I once worked with a girl who was so scared to leave her house that she stayed home for seven years. She’d worked with all sorts of therapists in the past, but none were successful. Baruch Hashem, through analyzing her drawings, I got a sense of what she was suffering from and was able to focus on that… She’s now married and even living in a different country,” Mrs. Abramovitz told me. “Instead of spending a year just trying to figure things out, I’ll look at what the person’s psyche is telling me through their pictures.”

understand, but these touch upon some of the things Perl looks at to help form a complete picture of the person. “I want to know how the person came to be where they’re at. How does one have so much fear and yet function so well? How is another so impulsive and yet so much in control? Is this person a dreamer? How much anger does this person have inside of them? Does it pull them down, or can they channel it in a healthy way? What can I tell them to motivate them? Why is this person stuck where they are, and how can I help them out of it? “I look for hints that tell me about the person’s state. This helps me to figure out what’s really going on, and whether I’m the right person to counsel them or if I need to find someone else to help them.” “When do you not accept a client?” I asked. “I like to help people grow in a way that I’ve grown,” she answered. “I have to feel that I can relate to a client, that there’s a muscle that I have that I can share with them. There has to be some connection, and sometimes I’m not the right person to help. There are also people who want to stay in their situation, for whatever reason. I’m here as a peer counselor for people who are willing to work really hard.” Not everyone’s ready to do that. Staying in one place sometimes feels like the safest option, and being hesitant to explore one’s psyche is understandable. For that reason, people are sometimes reluctant to submit their drawings for analysis, scoffing at Perl’s methods. “I recently did an event in which I realized how hesitant someone was,” Perl tells me. “I always find that the people who snort the loudest are the ones who have reasons for not really wanting to share… In the end, this woman did participate, and when we went over her drawing, I told her I saw something serious had happened with her mother when she was a young teen. She started crying, and I told her that she relates so well to young teenagers because of her experience.” Though one-on-one counseling is what Mrs. Abramovitz focuses on, events like the aforementioned one are sometimes on the schedule. “Drawing analysis isn’t entertainment. I use it to help people. But every once in a while I’ll go to a camp or a party. In such a venue, I’ll generally look at the drawings and tell each person something positive about themselves to give them a boost.” Perl told me that she once did an event for a group of elderly ladies. “It’s fascinating,” she said. “The older you are, the more

If strokes can speak and lines can expose the potential for lies, it comes as no surprise that objects and their placement can reveal inner worlds. “If you look through the window at an art class, you’ll see that although they’ll all be copying the same picture and using the same tools, every brush stroke will be different, every line on every tree will be going in a different direction. Some pictures will be more realistic and others more whimsical... Everyone will be looking at the same picture, but each artist will be telling a different story. The way they stroke gives a lot of information.”

Forming the Picture If strokes can speak and lines can expose the potential for lies, it comes as no surprise that objects and their placement can reveal inner worlds. “I’ll point out to someone how they’ll have placed a moon at the right corner and made it very dark, while the waves below will be very lightly drawn. One side of their tree will have fluffy leaves higher up and the other side will have the leaves lower down. Someone else would do it completely differently. Everything tells part of a story — their story.” In a very quick tutorial, Perl explains how the left side of the page typically correlates to one’s experience with their mother, and the right with their father. The sense of self can be seen in the sizing and placement of the main subject of interest, and the clues to one’s sense of security can be discovered through details such as fencing. Of course, there are many, many nuances that would take years of experience to

layered are your drawings. These women had these layered stories from all these years of their lives. One woman asked me a deep question, ‘Mamale, why can’t I marry off all my kids?’ I told her that there was so much that had happened in her life, and it was affecting her ability to handle their shidduchim. I advised her to take a step back and have someone else take the lead. She said, ‘You’re right. I’m not healthy enough.’” Then there are times when people don’t have even the foggiest idea of what might be causing issues. “One woman brought her child to me because of severe learning difficulties. They couldn’t figure out what the problem was. After looking at the pictures they drew, I told her, ‘I’m going to ask you a very funny question, but do you have exposure to certain illegal compounds? This child’s brain is full of it, and so is yours.’ Come to find out, they’d had an issue of illegal activity being conducted on the street in front of their home, and the chemicals were entering through the window and affecting the child.”

Put to the Test After hearing so many stories of Perl’s capabilities, we brought my own kids back into the conversation. “I was told to send in one child’s drawings for you to analyze, but I want to switch things up a bit,” I mischievously said, asking her if she’d be game to play a little game. “Instead of you telling me what you see in the pictures I’ve sent, can I give you a description of each child, and you’ll tell me which one drew each picture?” I’d labeled each of the papers according to a number I assigned each child, and then randomly read off a description I’d prepared, not sure if she’d be able to match the description with artwork. “Do you want the hardest one first, or the easiest?” I asked. Like a champ, she told me to give her

the hardest. “This child has incredible strength,” I said. “The child knows who they are and what they want. This child is very spiritual and asks a lot of questions about Hashem and Yiddishkeit. If this child believes something is right, they won’t back down for anything... This child is very confident and detail-oriented.” “Number three,” Mrs. Abramovitz replied without skipping a beat. “This is very unusual for this child’s age; they’re able to access a deep place in their cortex. Do you see the way the drawings touch both the bottom and top of the page? This is a very mature child. And there’s a lot of poetry in the child that has to come out.” Bingo. Nail on the head. “This child is a powerful, larger-than-life personality —” “Number one,” Mrs. Abramovitz cut me off. “Look how that ship goes up to the top of the page. This is a very authoritative child. One who is also very giving and loving. This child also thrives on music; it’s very healing for them.” At that, I giggled. “We’ve actually just started piano lessons for this kid,” I said, “and it’s going very well.” When we finished discussing that child, we moved on to the next. “This child has a pure soul, always trying very hard to do what Hashem wants. They also want to make others happy and will give up candies and toys to other children just because this child wants them to feel good.” As this was the last child we were going to discuss, it was obvious this was number two. Perl delved into the picture a bit: “This child has the ability to pick up way more information than the child should have the ability to at this age but doesn’t know how to verbally express it. This child has a hard time making decisions.” So far, so true. “This is a very strong kid and is going to be an amazing adult! Lots of confidence and a great head!” Perl said. “This child really looks up to teachers/rebbeim and talks to Hashem a lot.” The score? 100/100. Great job, Mrs. Abramovitz!

A Regret After taking a fascinating tour into the world of drawing analysis, I felt pangs of regret that I hadn’t used the opportunity to include my own drawings into the mix. I’m not the only one who yearns to know what Mrs. Abramowitz discerns from our lines and scribbles. “People are so hungry,” Mrs. Abramovitz told me. “On the occasions when I do an event, people are so upset when I walk out

because they want to know more, they want to hear more about themselves. Everyone wants a validation of their story. They want to hear that they’re such a special person. They want to hear: ‘You’re a survivor!’” She tells them, “Go to the mirror and tell yourself what you wish I would have said to you. I opened this up for you, but you can go forward. “Think about the core of what you wish for yourself. Say it to yourself. I know it sounds very boring, but it’s really so profound.” As I finished writing this article, I began to think of what message I’d like to tell myself and what I’d like others to see in my drawings. As I thought, I recalled a poem that I wrote when I was fourteen years old, which I’m sharing below, and realized that what I’d like for someone to see is my soul — a place of perfect purity despite all its struggles. And while I know that depth might escape the eyes of the average onlooker, I have a feeling that it wouldn’t hide from Mrs. Abramovitz. For there are a special few who can truly discern the story behind the squiggles.

Self-Portrait Today I drew a picture Unlike any other.

With lines deep and bold, And others soft and shy; The picture of perfection It was pleasing to the eye.

All who beheld its view Pondered on its essence; They yearned to know its inner core And stared into its presence.

And then they knew That they would never know, For ‘twasn’t but a picture, But a portrait of my soul.

Do you ever wish to be the kind of person who sees only the good in others and always has praise and admiration for them? I know I do. Have you tried to be mekabel to speak only good of others, but found it to be lip service after a short while? Oy, you’re so not alone. It’s deceptively simple to head down the rabbit hole of judging and begrudging. A small part of our minds gives us helpful messages like, “Ideally, I’d love her/him! If only they’d be a bit more this or that!” Is there a way to work on this trait? Can we truly recognize the good in others and become better people for it? Hashem requires of us the act of limud zechus. In addition to judging others favorably, the words limud zechus literally mean “the study of another’s merit” — that is, we must make a conscious, concerted effort to discover the hidden merits in others and bring them to the fore. By really opening our eyes, honing our inner sight, and looking, looking, looking for the good in others and how they light up the world in their own special way, we can indeed get to a place of more ahavas Yisroel. Of less judgment. Of more quality of life for others and ourselves.

The other week I was privileged to speak with the mother of a lively brood. I say privileged, because she spoke of the thankyou note initiative she launched with her kids in the same unaffected manner one would say: “I hung up their jackets and served them snacks.” She insisted that we omit her name, but I feel honored to share how this woman strengthened the love among her children in such a fun, unique way. May this inspire us to bolster our love for one another, and in that merit, bring the geulah soon.

THANK YOU, THREE WAYS

“What made you start this initiative?” I asked super-Mommy, impressed after listening to her for just a few minutes. Her answer blew me away in its simplicity. “I had extra thank-you cards lying around, and you know, with COVID going on…” This mother took extra paper and an upside-down world, and made a life-giving elixir of it. “Every so often,” she continued, “I gave out thank-you cards to my kids, and then assigned each child one sibling by lottery. I then had each kid write a short letter to their secret pen pal — one that included a thank you for something the sibling had done for them, and/or compliments. I involved everyone; the older kids managed on their own, and the younger ones told me what to write while they embellished the messages with their artwork. Then I collected the cards. Sometimes I’d hold on to them for a few days, and then hide them under the kids’ pillows.” Can we pause for a minute and imagine the impact? Picture how a child feels when he finds under his pillow a card written especially for him! A card all about him? Incredible! How did this busy mother manage to keep the messages unique and meaningful? I mean, I can think of basically two compliments the younger set would consistently use: “cute” and “the best!” “I took to jotting down different relevant adjectives,” my interviewee confided. “Sometimes I’d go around the table asking the kids to compliment each other, and then I’d write down their ideas. I shared the list with my kids to give them food for thought and keep them from tired and generic phrases. It was really helpful and included attributes like awesome, well-behaved, derech eretz’dig, a masmid, etc. It kept things fresh.”

And she turned this into an art, inserting good vibes wherever she could. The popular “spider” game, played with a ball of yarn by forging connections around a circle of kids, was turned into a feel-good fest as the usual questions were substituted with compliments as the yarn was passed around. One time that the compliment cards really worked out for the family LL TO CAwhen was Mommy collected them, and D then forgot all about it for a few months. “I found the cards just in time for one of the kids’ birthday parties. for them to recall what they’d written for each other!” Now the million-dollar question was: “What effect did this program have on your children?” She answered with a laugh. “My kids really enjoyed the program. But as parents, we put in our best efforts without being guaranteed of the results. There are no magic buttons in parenting.” We chuckle with the knowledge of those who do the twosteps-forward, one-step-back Mommydance — all the time. But as super-Mommy teaches us, there are certainly ways to spread the magic in our day-to-day lives!

COMPLIMENTARY SPIDER GAME

The effect of this game is precious. There’s nothing like seeing the kids blush and kvell at the beautiful things their siblings have to say about them!

All you need: 1 ball of yarn 1 stack of compliment cards (see next page for ideas)

To play: Have all the players stand in a circle. The first player takes the yarn and stack of cards, picks up the top card, and reads it quietly. This player then decides whom the compliment on the card fits best, and without divulging the contents of the card and while keeping it, passes the yarn to that player along with the rest of the stack of cards. Player 2 now repeats what Player 1 has done, taking a compliment card, passing the yarn to the player who fits that card best — and keeping the card and its contents to him/herself. Each player should keep their cards in the order in which they were received, with the first card on the bottom of their individual stack and the later cards topping it. The game proceeds until the yarn and cards are finished and all the players are entwined in an intricate web of yarn. And now let the fun begin! The last player to receive the yarn passes the yarn back to the player who originally passed it to him/her, and this player picks up the last card he/she kept and reads it aloud. This player then passes the yarn back to the sibling who passed the yarn to him/ her, who reads his/her last card, and so the entire web gets unraveled, with all the players reveling in the recognition of their unique qualities!

GOODBYE, FOREVER!

Supplies: Acrylic paints The key to a good acrylic pour is consistency — of paint, that is. You’ll want to use fluid acrylics, which have a much thinner consistency than heavy-body acrylics. If you have only thicker acrylics on hand, you can still use them, but you’ll want to thin them out with water. (Read below for more info on paint consistency.) You can also use simple craft paints that are

Canvas Plastic cups Popsicle sticks To mix the paint, if you are adding water; also to cover any white spots.

Rubber gloves Varnishing spray Hair spray does the job as well!

Paint-Pouring Tips 1. The paint should have a consistency similar to heavy cream or hot melted chocolate. If it’s too thick (like yogurt or mayonnaise), it won’t pour smoothly, and you will have a hard time spreading the paint on the canvas. If the paint is too thin (like milk or juice), the colors will mix and the design won’t hold. 2. Your best option is to buy fluid paint, pour some into a cup, and note its consistency. Then play around with the other paint by adding a little water at a time, until you get perfectly creamy pouring paint. 3. Make sure to have the same ratio of paint to water for all of the colors that you will be using for each pour. It is very important that all of the paints for a given project have the same density. 4. Choosing colors is fun! You can do as many colors per pour as you like. I like to add at least one layer of white paint in each cup to add some depth as it mixes with the other colors.

RIKERS ISLAND

Rikers Island. Two of the most terrifying words in the New York City lexicon. From abuse to neglect, coverups to corruption, and violence to the violation of rights, the city’s notorious jail island has a history as shocking as it is turbulent. Today, it is closer than ever to being closed for good. 108

When Abraham Rycken took over this marshy piece of land in 1664, he could never imagine the heavy weight his last name would one day bear. The infamous island, home to most of New York City’s jail cells, has become synonymous with getting caught on the wrong side of the law, as well as abuse and mistreatment at the hands of officials. The island is officially part of the Bronx but is accessed from Queens via a 4,200-foot bridge that was completed in 1966. It is located right near LaGuardia Airport, with one of the runways — built on landfill — ending a mere 250 feet from the island. (During a 1957 snowstorm, a LaGuardia flight crashed into the island and exploded shortly after takeoff, killing 20 passengers. Rikers inmates helped save many others from the

wreckage; some prisoners were rewarded with shorter sentences.) For over two centuries, the island was owned by the Ricker family — descendants of the aforementioned Abraham Rycken — who eventually dropped the c in favor of Riker. During the Civil War it was used as training grounds for Union soldiers, including the 9th New York Infantry Regiment led by one John Lafayette Riker, who was actually related to the Rickers. In 1932, Rikers was first used as a jail in order to relieve overcrowding at the jail on Roosevelt Island (then called Welfare Island). With time, Rikers Island became the city’s primary jail, home to ten of its fifteen correctional facilities. Rikers is not a prison where criminals serve out their extensive sentences. Instead, it holds city defendants awaiting trial, those who are pending transfers to other prisons, and inmates serving shorter sentences. The island originally measured less than 90 acres, but city garbage used as landfill ended up growing it nearly five times in size, allowing for the building of the necessary facilities to

host up to 15,000 inmates at once. In the 1990s, the inmate population soared to over 20,000, but it has since fallen to around 10,000. A tremendous amount of refuse was dumped onto the island in the first half of the previous century, much of which included ash from coal burning. The gases would often explode and create volcanoes of fire and smoke that were both beautiful during the nighttime and unseemly to those who wished to live in a clean city. An uncontrollable rat population also plagued the island until it was cleaned up as New York prepared to host the 1939 World’s Fair nearby.

A “DEEP-SEATED CULTURE OF VIOLENCE”

Even for jails and prisons, Rikers Island has a terrible reputation, ranking as one of the worst correctional facilities in America. Lawsuits have burdened local taxpayers with over $100 million in settlements to victims of mistreatment and abuse. The notorious island has earned nicknames like “Torture Island” and “The Oven,” the latter referring to the brutal heat in the steel and concrete structures during the summer. The harrowing conditions to which detainees have been subjected over the years are made even worse by the fact that a significant number of the subjects weren’t even charged with a crime. Large numbers of inmates, many with mental health issues, have been severely injured or left to die at the hands of correctional officers, and a culture of impunity has led to

guards routinely lying in their reports and getting away with it. The grim stories of cruelty and abuse are not for these pages, but a number of investigations, court rulings and reports have detailed the disturbing culture of violence at the jails, especially in areas not under video surveillance. Eventually, the city had had enough, and momentum began gathering for the jails to be shut down and replaced with a couple of smaller and better-managed facilities across the city. In 2017, Mayor Bill de Blasio accepted the recommendation of an independent commission to close the island within a decade. A year later, the state also called for its closing, even suggesting that it should be done before the tenyear period is up. The City Council agreed and voted to approve a plan that will see the jails cease to operate by the end of 2026. What will happen with the strategically located island? Traditional development will be difficult because of the environmental and safety concerns stemming from the waste upon which the island is built. Some have suggested adding a runway to LaGuardia, while a popular plan seems to be the building of wastewater treatment and sustainable energy plants. For now, all that has been approved is for the jails to be used as public land. Based on the speed at which New York bureaucracy moves, it will probably be a long time before anyone gets to visit the island — under favorable circumstances, that is.

NORTH AND SOUTH BROTHER ISLANDS

Not far from Rikers, two islands have been sitting empty for over half a century, if you don’t count the many birds who have made themselves at home there. The truth is that the birds have a rightful claim to this land, as until relatively recently, a large number of bird species enjoyed New York Harbor as a primary place of nesting and foraging. Development, hunting and egg collection, as well as deteriorating water quality have chased them away for a while, but since the islands were abandoned, their numbers have risen again. The larger of the two islands is North Brother Island, where 25 buildings still stand eerily abandoned and in various stages of dilapidation. From 1885 to 1943, the island was the site of Riverside Hospital, where patients with contagious diseases were isolated from the general population. For a few years after World War II, housing for veterans was provided on the island, and later years saw a youth rehabilitation center hosted there. The little brother, South Brother Island, was once used to dump waste from Manhattan (which was the entirety of New York City at the time) until residents of the Bronx and Queens nearby put a stop to this practice. No one has lived on the island for over 100 years — although there are stories that it was used for smuggling alcohol during Prohibition — and there are no standing buildings on it, either. Today, the islands are off-limits to visitors and are classified as protected bird sanctuaries. The only authorized visits are those undertaken for academic, scientific or journalistic

reasons, and even those are not allowed during the summer months when the birds breed. In addition to protecting the wildlife that are part of the local ecosystem, the remaining buildings are in terrible shape and pose a real hazard to those entering them. Those who have visited North Brother Island talk of its many structures overrun by wild growth and facing imminent collapse, as well as haunting reminders of the island’s past. The birds don’t seem to mind, though large nesting colonies of blackcrowned night herons that used to fill the island had left by 2008, for reasons that remain unclear. There have been plans to open the islands to the public, but none have materialized, and they don’t seem realistic at this time.

Leftolas

Hello, Jumbo!

Don’t know what to do with those leftover nubs?

NYC: September 13, 2017

The Crayola brand dubbed those too-smallto-use pieces — “leftolas.” In 2003, the company created a toy that enables young artists to put leftolas to use: The Crayola Crayon Maker melts and molds new crayons out of these nubs! Making swirly colorful crayons is fun!

As the finale to their name-the-new-blue contest, of which “Bluetiful” won first place, Crayola unveiled a jumbo Bluetiful crayon. At 1,352 pounds and almost 16 feet long, Bluetiful became the largest crayon ever created. Today, it is hosted by the Crayola Experience in Orlando. This new hue of blue became a standard addition to every basic 24-pack of Crayola crayons, replacing Dandelion Yellow.

In preparation for their 100th birthday, Crayola announced a campaign. Kids across the United States sent in their unwanted blue leftolas. The contributions added up to the equivalent of 123,000 crayons, which were fused together to create one large blue crayon. This oversized crayon was a record holder until 2017, when jumbo Bluetiful took over. Wondering what that is? Read on.

Personalize it! With Crayola My Way, you get to choose which colors you’ll find in your box. The packaging can also be personalized. It makes a perfect party favor for schools or camps, and businesses can use it as a promotional giveaway.

Crayola Experience With five locations across the United States, the Crayola Experience stands out as a hands-on, colorful destination. Kids love watching how crayons and markers are made, and enjoy loads of interactive attractions.

Beyond the Paper The original wax crayon is perfect for coloring on plain old paper. What happens when you want to design a different surface? Check out these colorful options: • Window crayons — designed for plexiglass, acetate sheets or other clearcoated surfaces • Construction paper crayons — will make their marks on construction paper, paper bags or cardboard • Dry-erase crayons — perfect for plastic cups or plates For other materials, there are loads of Crayola products — ranging from markers to colored pencils, and loads in between.

Random Snippets The first box of Crayola crayons contained eight colors and sold in 1903 for 5 cents. For the first 40 years, every crayon label was hand-rolled. Let’s hope no one developed carpal tunnel syndrome! Emerson Moser worked for Crayola for 35 years, molding more than 1.4 billion crayons — even though he was color blind! In 1958, the 64-pack of crayons was introduced, with a crayon sharpener included in the box design. In 1994, Crayola produced a line of food-scented crayons. Magic Scent crayons smelled of coconut, licorice, cherry and chocolate, among other foods. It was a bit too enticing for kids, the company discovered — and they discontinued the run. A vintage box of Crayola crayons can sell for up to $500. C-rex is labeled the “most rare” color. It is a yellowish-green.
