I’d like to share the information of a fairly unknown now be found island, which, measuring at less than 100 on the secondby 200 feet, enjoys the distinction as Manto-last page. hattan’s smallest island. U Thant Island is in the East River right across the United Nations headquarters, named so for former United Nations Secretary General U Thant. (Although it’s official name is Belmont Island, it’s called U Thant by all). Next time you travel on the FDR past the UN, have a look at this little islet in the East River. Yitzchok Fleischer

DIFFERENT TYPES OF RADIATION

TEITELBAUM INSURANCE BROKER AGE INC.

(Re: Alone at Home, Issue 91) Thank you for your beautiful publication. I really enjoy it. I was reading last week’s article about baby monitors and would like to clarify what I read in the sidebar about EMF. The interviewee claimed monitors are bad because they emit “radiation.” However, “radiation” has a very broad scope. Light emits radiation, and so does your microwave. The radiation of a baby monitor is a low non-ionizing level of radiation like that of a microwave. Although long exposure to EMF is harmful, going outside without sunscreen is worse. (The sun gives off ultraviolet radiation, which is stronger, and sometimes ionizing radiation, which is harmful but mostly filtered out by the ozone layer.) For some reason, radiation is touted as a monster even though only some types are dangerous. Yechezkel Friedman

every Thursday! One of the many reasons I love The Boro Park View is that your content isn’t just nonsense. The features are really educational, and the idea of organizing contests even for adult readers is great! Your Cooking Contest for Beginners was really practical and something I enjoyed. I would love it if you would run a similar program on washing laundry: guidance for pretreating, sorting and washing different types of clothing; advice on detergent, washing cycles and water temperature; and a laundry-washing schedule to keep us organized. K9 INSPECTIONS

I was conscious of the number of items I had in my shopping cart as I stood at the “five items and below” checkout line. Guilt-ridden that I had seven articles and aware that someone may be counting my pre-purchases, I moved over to the “fifteen and below” line, behind a customer with an overly laden cart. What’s one to do? Hoping that the customer was able to read and count, I patiently awaited my turn. To my chagrin, the customer’s “friend” suddenly appeared, throwing into an already overly laden cart some take-out goodies as well as giant bags of chips, popcorn and various other snacks. Waiting patiently is not my strong suit, but it’s something I tolerate. Holding my tongue at injustice, however, is not my forte at all. I politely asked the cart owner if perhaps they could join the lines meant for more significant amounts of items. Their curt reply was, “If you don’t like this line, you can go to another one.” They succeeded in silencing me, the cashier (who overheard and shrugged her shoulders), and the elderly white-bearded gentleman behind me, who commented, “What can we do? These are today’s youth.” I refuse to believe that. When Klal Yisroel is suffocating in these days and months, I do not suspect that our youth are that callous, and I genuinely believe this to have been a singular occurrence. We are desperately searching for ways to invoke Hashem’s rachamim on His children. The middah of derech eretz is an area in which Am Yisroel excels, but perhaps improvement is needed. Dear child, if you so glibly expressed such disrespect to an elder thrice your age (if not more) with a cart full of goods bought for Shabbos Kodesh, I shudder to think how your middah of bein adam lachaveiro is toward your peers. The middah of guarding one’s tongue has zero monetary expense but can yield life-saving results. I hope this letter brings awareness to whoever needs it and the Geulah a step closer. R.S.

PARSHAS DEVARIM – SHABBOS CHAZON Any Minute Now

There are five megillos read at specific times of the year. Megillas Esther is written on klaf. There are certain factions of Klal Yisroel who write and read Koheles, Rus and Shir Hashirim on klaf, too. The only megillah that isn’t customarily found inscribed on klaf is Megillas Eicha. Why is Eicha different?

IT WAS SCORCHING HOT in the fields of Komemiyus. That Friday afternoon, no one went out unless there was no choice. As Shabbos approached, the heat finally began to break, and residents could be sighted tending to their preparations. The rav of the yishuv, Rav Binyamin Mendelsohn, was already in the beis midrash, dressed in Shabbos garb, softly humming the words of Shir Hashirim. The pure atmosphere of Shabbos was beginning its descent on the settlement. Suddenly, the door to the shul opened, and in ran a fellow, still clad in his farming garb. He was covered in dust — an indication that he’d come running straight from the fields. Sweaty and panting, he dashed over to the rav’s place and cried, “A bechor! A bechor!” Rabbi Mendelsohn knew exactly what the man meant. This was urgent! He stood up and hurriedly followed him out of shul. In his spudik and freshly pol-

ished Shabbos shoes, Rabbi Mendelsohn rushed straight to the cowshed. In what was a rarity in the day, the budding farms of Komemiyus were run with an unwavering commitment to abide by every last nuance of halacha. Which is why Rabbi Mendelsohn found it pressing enough to stop his calm Shabbos preparation and rush out to the cows. The birth of firstborn livestock poses a concern. Since firstborn cattle were sacrificed as korbanos in the Beis Hamikdash, they may not become wounded or blemished even today. The bechor of an animal must be tended with utmost care and may not be utilized for any purpose at all. This creates quite a challenge in the barn. The Komemiyus cattle farmers made sure to sell the cows to a non-Jew before their calves were born. This way, they would avoid the delicate task of attentively caring for an animal they could

never benefit from. The new calf would belong to the non-Jew, dodging its spiritual status as a bechor. “Call Ahmad! Quick!” It was a race against the clock as the pair rushed in the hope that they would clinch the deal with Ahmad Javar, the steady buyer of Komemiyus’ cattle, still before the new calf was born, which was likely to occur over Shabbos. The sun was nearly setting. But Rabbi Mendelsohn was painstakingly drawing up the contract, every last detail clearly recorded. This transaction would be handled with the same straight honesty that characterized every Komemiyus affair. The cattle farmer, Ahmad and a cow tagged number 414 stood around the rav. By the time the contract was completed, the community members were already beginning to daven Mincha. Reb Moshe Yakov Sigler, who had followed the rav to the cowshed, now ac-

companied him back to shul. They made it just in time for shekiah. “Perhaps the Rav should prepare a couple of contract copies,” Reb Moshe Yakov suggested, proud to have hit upon a brilliant idea. “Next time, the process will take much quicker. Just the few main details, like the name, animal and amount, will need to be filled in. It could cut the time down enormously! “Isn’t that what we do with the kesubah and many other halachic contracts?” Reb Moshe Yakov asked rhetorically. “And here, it’s double as wise — since time is of essence when these contracts are drawn up!” His eyes sparkled with excitement over his brainstorm. But Rabbi Mendelson’s eyes glistened. In the tears that shamelessly rolled down his cheek, you could detect a deep sense of longing. “You know,” he said softly, “the entire concept of selling firstborn cattle is a temporary solution for these days when we don’t merit bringing these animals to the mizbe’ach. But you should know that every time I write up such a contract, I hope with my entire heart that this be the very last time I need to complete this transaction. Halevei the next time a bechor is born on our farm, it should be the greatest source of fortune — that we have a gift to bring to Hashem! “I don’t want to prepare a bunch of contracts! I don’t want to sell these animals! Imagine if Moshiach would arrive today and enter my home where he would find dozens of contracts ready. What would he say? That I didn’t wait for him? Perhaps even today we will merit bringing our animals up to Yerushalayim…” * * * * * Every year, when days of bein hametzarim roll around, we hope that this will be our last round of mourning. We yearn to return to the Beis Hamikdash, where galus and tzaros will be a thing of the past. Eicha is only applicable in galus. The moment we will be reunited in the Beis Hamikdash, we won’t have a need for Megillas Eicha anymore. That’s why we don’t prepare Eicha on klaf. In all generations, it never became customary to perpetuate Eicha with the everlasting kedusha of a kosher scroll, for we hope never to need to use it again. May we be zoche to see Tisha B’Av turn into the festive yom tov it is destined to be.

Did You Know? The Sfas Emes says that the Geulah will be a two-part process: one to take Klal Yisroel out of galus, and the second to take the galus out of the Yid! He commented that the second will be harder than the first…

CHAPTER 16 RECAP: Rav Shloime shares with Yankiv Tomashov his conflicting impressions of Shabbesai Tzvi. Shabbesai Tavi and his closest disciples travel to Egypt, where Rafael Yosef Chelebi opens his home to them.

short while later, Gamliel Basnoun arrived from Yerushalayim. Yechiel went down to the riverside to await his arrival on the riverboat from Dumyat, and together, they walked along AlMuski Street to the Jewish quarter. Although Gamliel was not a prominent person, Refael Yosef Chelebi came out to greet him. “Welcome, my friend,” said Refael Yosef as he shook Gamliel’s hand. “My house lies open before you. I would be happy if you look upon it as your home during your stay here.” “I’m deeply grateful,” replied Gamliel as he looked with wonder at his surroundings. “Your generosity is known throughout Eretz Yisroel. You are truly a prince of our people, worthy of a palace such as this.” “I beg you not to say such things to me,” said Refael Yosef. “Flattery wounds more deeply than a Bedouin’s dagger. You must be weary from your journey.” He snapped his fingers, and a dark-skinned, barefoot servant in a tunic and pantaloons appeared. “Selim, take our guest’s baggage, and have refreshments sent to his rooms.” As they waited for the afternoon prayers, Yechiel and Gamliel sat in

the formal gardens, discussing the events of the past several months. The day faded away, and the two friends prayed in Refael Yosef Chelebi’s private shul along with many other participants waiting to catch a glimpse of Shabbesai Tzvi. But Shabbesai Tzvi was nowhere in sight. He sat in a small room adjoining the shul. The door was closed. Darkness fell. Evening prayers were over, and still Shabbesai Tzvi remained in his room. It was well after midnight when he finally emerged. The shul was still full. Shabbesai Tzvi’s eyes shone with a feverish light, his pale features with an otherworldly luminescence. He walked to the holy ark, withdrew a large Torah scroll and began to dance with it. As he danced, he sang a song in a language Yechiel recognized by its lisping sound as Castilian Spanish. “Do you have any idea what the words mean?” whispered Yechiel as he tugged at Gamliel’s sleeve. “The song is called Meliselda, the Emperor’s Daughter,” replied Gamliel. “Who composed it?” “It’s an old Spanish folk ballad, popular among the peasants.” “Why would the Master sing such a song?” asked Yechiel incredulously.

“Especially while holding a holy Torah scroll in his arms?” “The Master has found many Kabbalistic meanings in the words of this song,” explained Gamliel. “It’s one of his favorites. It’s a good sign when he sings it. Listen to it. It has great beauty.” The song was indeed beautiful, especially as sung by Shabbesai Tzvi. After the song ended, Shabbesai Tzvi placed the Torah scroll on the lectern and pulled off its mantle. He extended his arms into the air above it and pronounced the blessing over the Torah, clearly uttering the Shem Hameforash. A few shocked gasps and angry murmurs escaped from the crowd, but they were quickly silenced by a stern look from Refael Yosef Chelebi. Shabbesai Tzvi began to read from the Torah in a seemingly random manner. He would read a few verses at a time, then continue to a different portion. Sometimes he would shed a tear, sometimes he would laugh. The shifts of mood seemed to have no connection to the content of the verses he was reading. Suddenly, he stopped in the middle of a verse and abruptly turned away. Leaving the Torah lying open on the lectern, he walked into his room and closed the door behind him. For the next several weeks, Shabbesai Tzvi remained in a state of intense illumination, with many prophetic visions and mysterious outbursts. About a month after Gamliel’s

arrival, Shabbesai Tzvi’s period of illumination came to an abrupt end, and he went into extended seclusion, sending most of his disciples back to their homes. Yechiel and Gamliel traveled together to Eretz Yisroel, and from there, Yechiel continued on his own to Smyrna. Months passed before Yechiel heard from Shabbesai Tzvi again. During this time, Shabbesai Tzvi’s parents passed away within a short time of each other. In the spring of 1663, Yechiel received two letters, one from his father in Warsaw, the other from Gamliel Basnoun in Yerushalayim. “We’re very concerned about you, Yechiel,” wrote Yankiv Tomashov. “Most of the people here in Poland still haven’t heard of Shabbesai Tzvi, but I get my information regularly. The reports are disturbing, to say the least. Rav Shloime Strasbourg was unconvinced. According to him, Shabbesai Tzvi may be genuine or he may not. He couldn’t say either way. That’s not very reassuring. I saw Rav Shloime just recently, but I couldn’t really talk to him at length. He was beside himself with sorrow over the sudden passing of Rav Shabsi Kohein, the rabbi of Helishau1. It was such a shock. He was just 41 years old. It’s a tremendous loss for the Jewish People, and for Rav Shloime, it was a very personal loss. They were close. Anyway, I’m sorry to bring you such sad tidings. Take care of yourself, Yechiel. Be careful. Please, please be careful. Your loving father, Yankiv.” Yechiel folded the letter and put it away. The news was sad. Even from this distance, he felt the loss. Rav Shabsi Kohein had been like the rising sun. He had just begun to illumi-

nate the Torah world with his brilliance. The Jewish communities of Europe and beyond had anticipated many more years of ever-increasing illumination. The sun had set too soon. With a sigh, he picked up his friend’s letter and opened it. “The Master has arrived in Yerushalayim,” wrote Gamliel. “He has taken rooms just a short walk from the Kosel. Yerushalayim is a far cry from Constantinople and Smyrna, or even Salonika. The city is poor beyond belief, subsisting almost entirely on charity. The old rabbis are deeply committed, and the people follow them without question. I foresee trying times for our movement in Yerushalayim.” Throughout the summer and early fall, Yechiel wrote often to Shabbesai Tzvi but received no letters in reply. After Sukkos, another letter from Gamliel Basnoun arrived. “The Master wants you to come to Yerushalayim after Chanukah,” wrote Gamliel. “Your family would also be most welcome.” ***** Yechiel and his family arrived in Yerushalayim during the early winter of 1664. Gamliel appeared on his doorstep only hours after he had settled in. “Tell me some news, Gamliel,” said Yechiel after they embraced and greeted each other. “How is the Master? Do new disciples flock to him here as they have everywhere else?” Gamliel averted his eyes. “Things could be better, Yechiel. Much better. The Master is respected by the people of Yerushalayim, but they do not come to sit at his feet and drink deeply of the holy words he speaks. And the Master’s unusual behavior fills them with dread. They have not the courage to accept the Mas-

ter, because they fear that by doing so, they might jeopardize the alms that come in from abroad. They only come if they’re mortally ill and need blessings. Some younger men yearn to join the Master. I see it on their faces. But the old rabbis rule with an iron hand. They will not hear of it. Controversy terrifies them.” “I see. What will the Master do?” “The Master had considered returning to Turkey, especially when he heard of the death of his parents, but he felt it was not yet time. He spends his time learning in his rooms and praying at the sacred gravesites. And he waits. He waits for a sign from Heaven. The Master will be happy to see you. Mukian will also be arriving shortly.” “Indeed? It’s been a while since we’ve all been together. When can I see the Master?” “Why, anytime. I can take you to him tomorrow morning, if you wish.” “Come early, Gamliel.” ***** Shabbesai Tzvi greeted Yechiel with genuine delight, but the old fire was not there. He had grown painfully thin, and dark circles rimmed his eyes. Yechiel tried to hide his dismay at Shabbesai Tzvi’s appearance. He had expected him to blossom in Yerushalayim, but he had wilted instead. The arrival of Yechiel, however, and the imminent arrival of Mukian the Macedonian, seemed to reinvigorate him. A knock on the door interrupted the conversation. An Arab wearing a filthy burnoose and a tattered kaffiyeh poked his head into the room. He grumbled something in harsh, guttural Arabic and closed the door behind him. “He’s the donkey driver,” whispered Gamliel, taking note of Yechiel’s puzzled expression. “He’ll take us to Kever Rochel in Beis Lechem. You’ll come with us, Yechiel. There is room for you in the cart.” At Kever Rochel, Shabbesai Tzvi became absorbed in his Tehillim

and remained standing in one place long after Gamliel and Yechiel had finished. The two men waited at a respectful distance and conversed in low tones. Not far from them stood a young man with pale eyes and a blond beard just beginning to sprout. He was staring intently at Shabbesai Tzvi. “Gamliel, do you see that young man over there?” “Yes, Yechiel. He comes here often.” “Who is he?” “His name is Nattan Binyamin Halevi from Gaza, otherwise known as Nattan Haazati. It is said that, though barely twenty years old, he is the most accomplished disciple of Rav Yaakov Chagiz, one of the leading rabbis of Yerushalayim. He has finished the Talmud and also has a deep understanding of Kabbalah.” He lowered his voice. “It’s also said that despite his great accomplishments in the study of the Torah, he has an insatiable hunger for money and power.” “He seems rather an unusual character,” said Yechiel.

Yechiel tried to hide his dismay at Shabbesai Tzvi’s appearance. He had expected him to blossom in Yerushalayim, but he had wilted instead. “Why does he stare at the Master like that?” Gamliel shrugged. “I can only guess. I’d say he knows he has much to gain from the Master, but he dares not approach him for fear of enraging Rav Yaakov Chagiz. On more than one occasion, he has asked me questions about the Master.” “Has he ever spoken to the Master?” “Not to my knowledge. He always watches from afar. I don’t even know if the Master has ever seen him.” With obvious reluctance, Nattan Haazati pulled himself away and departed. After another half-hour, Shabbesai Tzvi closed his Tehillim and prepared to leave. No one spoke all the way back to the gates of Yerushalayim. Bedlam reigned in the narrow streets of the Jewish quarter when they returned. Men huddled in small frightened groups under the ancient archways. Women stood on the balconies wailing and wringing their hands. An uneasy hush fell over the street as the tall figure of Shabbesai Tzvi and his companions approached. A small dark man rushed over to Shabbesai Tzvi, grabbed his hand and covered it with kisses. “Please, please, holy one,” wailed the man. “Please help us. Please save the people of Yerushalayim.” To be continued…

Rav Shabsi Kohein is known to history as the Shach, an acronym of the title of his classic work on the Shulchan Aruch. He appears in great detail in Twilight, the previous volume in the Strasbourg Saga.

Adams Locks Up Democratic Mayoral Primary Two weeks after New York City’s June 22nd primary day, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams was finally proclaimed victorious in the first-ever ranked choice election in the five boroughs. Adams ran on a platform that walked the fine line between fighting rising crime rates while ending racial injustice. The Associated Press reported that Adams beat out former sanitation commissioner Kathryn Garcia by 8,426 votes, just over 1% of the vote. The election was hotly contested, with Adams and Yang the clear favorites in the Jewish community. An early lead by Yang fizzled, and he conceded defeat on primary day, even as the other candidates hung on, hoping for positive results while the ballots were tabulated under the new ranked-choice system. A moderate Democrat who opposed the movement to defund the police, Adams said that the time has come to reclaim a city that has seen an alarming increase in violent crime. “If Black lives really matter, it can’t only be against police abuse,” said the former police officer on primary night. “It has to be against the violence that’s ripping apart our communities.” The long wait for results became even more contentious last week when erroneous results were published that included 135,000 test ballots. Those results were pulled several hours later, but three candidates — Adams, Garcia and Maya Wiley — all filed lawsuits, demanding the right to be able to review the actual tallies. Adams is expected to easily defeat Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa in the November 2nd elections, which would make him the city’s second Black mayor.

NYC Honors Essential Workers With Hometown Heroes Parade Approximately 2,500 first responders, teachers, doormen, security officers, cleaners, and health care, grocery, sanitation, utility, airport and transit workers made their way up Lower Manhattan’s Canyon of Heroes last Wednesday, cheered on by a grateful crowd of 100,000 amid a hail of ticker tape. NBC New York reported that the parade began at 11 a.m. in Battery Park, with essential workers accompanied by ten marching bands and fourteen floats. It was one of the city’s largest ticker tape parades ever and the first in nearly two years, fulfilling a promise made by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio last April that frontline workers would be honored with a parade when the pandemic was finally beaten back. “We’ve got a lot to appreciate because we’re well underway

in our recovery,” said the mayor. “We’ve got a lot to celebrate, and we’ve got a lot of people to celebrate. They deserve a march down the Canyon of Heroes because it’s something that’s reserved for the greatest folks in history. Well, here are some of the folks who made history in New York City’s toughest hour.” Sandra Lindsay, the critical care nurse from Queens and the first COVID-19 vaccine recipient in the United States, served as the parade’s grand marshal. “What a difference a year makes,” observed Lindsay. “Fifteen months ago, we were in a much different place, but thanks to the heroic efforts of so many — health care workers, first responders, frontline workers, the people who fed us, the people who put their lives on the line — we can’t thank them enough.” Not all of the festivities went on as planned. A scheduled City Hall ceremony was canceled due to extremely hot weather, with the mayor and the first lady applauding participants as they reached the end of the parade route. Additionally, thousands of essential workers, particularly paramedics, boycotted the parade, calling for hazard pay for working around the clock last year. Oren Barzilay, president of the FDNY EMS union, said that the city received billions in federal aid, but not a penny of that money made its way to essential workers, according to News10 ABC reports. “Not even a $50 gift card to say, ‘Thanks for your work,’” said Barzilay. Asked about hazard pay along the parade route, New York State Attorney General Letitia James said that she has been made aware of the issue. “I’m hoping the City of New York negotiates something for the workers who sacrificed every day for others,” said James. Amid the celebrations were memorials to essential workers who died of COVID-19, with New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Dave Chokshi summing up the many emotions of the day. “We’re feeling a lot of gratitude for all of the sacrifices that people have made — missed family meals, sleepless nights, weekends working — all the things that helped to keep New York City safe over the last eighteen months,” said Chokshi. “We’re also feeling some reflection, some sadness, of course, for the people who aren’t able to join us and celebrate as we are today, and we’ll always keep those memories in our hearts at the same time.” Chokshi was quick to note that despite the celebration, COVID-19 remains a challenge in New York City, and he joined Lindsay in urging all eligible city residents to roll up their sleeves and take the vaccination. “Our work isn’t done yet, and the New York City Department of Health is committed to making sure that as many people get vaccinated as possible so that our recovery can continue and we have a future that is better and stronger than the past,” said Chokshi.

COVID-19 Boosters Remain a Topic of Debate With a larger number of people passing the six-month mark since being vaccinated, discussions continue to swirl on whether booster shots are needed to keep COVID-19 and its variants at bay. Pfizer, the maker of one of the three widely distributed vaccines, said last week that it would seek emergency approval from the FDA for a booster shot to provide extended immunity, particularly with the spread of the COVID-19 delta variant, reported Hamodia. But in a rare move that came just hours later, the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control released a joint statement saying that a third booster shot was unnecessary. “Americans who have been fully vaccinated do not need a booster shot at this time,” read the statement. “The United States is fortunate to have highly effective vaccines that are widely available for those aged twelve and up. People who are fully vaccinated are protected from severe disease and death, including from the variants currently circulating in the country such as delta.” Weighing in hours later was presidential chief medical adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci who added yet more confusion to the mix. Fauci said that while there is currently no data supporting the need for a booster shot, it was possible that a third immunization may be recommended, particularly for those with underlying factors, including age and certain medical conditions. “Certainly, it is entirely conceivable, maybe likely at some time, we will need a boost,” said Fauci. CDC director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said that the data is showing that immunizations offer protection from COVID-19. She noted that the virus’s delta variant is more prevalent in places where vaccination rates are low, while life is getting back to normal in sections of the country where vaccination rates are consistently higher.

After Latest Bid Fails, Quest To Save Jewish Girl’s Life Heads to Supreme Court Expressing his regrets, a British appellate court judge denied a request that would prevent a Manchester hospital from taking a two-year-old Jewish toddler with brain damage off life support. According to Britain’s Jewish News, Lord Justice Baker handed down a July 9th ruling that said that while he understood the Fixsler’s motivations as parents, he was legally bound to apply the law and dismiss their appeal because it was in their daughter’s best interest that she be removed from the life-sustaining equipment that allows her to breathe and receive nutrition. The court stated that continuing on life support would be a burden on Alta and “that because of her condition, she would have minimal awareness of family and social relationships, and as a result have minimal or no ability to take comfort or enjoyment from those who love her or were around her.” Pleas by Alta’s father, an American citizen, her mother, an

Israeli citizen, and high-profile names in both countries to have her transferred to either place in accordance with their religious beliefs failed to sway the court, which said that none outweighed “the other compelling factors that pointed in the opposite direction.” Justice Baker said that he had great respect for the shows of support for the Fixslers, but said that his decision had been made in accordance with the principle of English law. “I know that Alta’s devoted parents will be profoundly distressed by the outcome of this appeal,” ruled Justice Baker. “Every parent and grandparent — indeed every person — from every community will have the deepest sympathy for them, and for Alta’s loving sibling. The strong support they draw from their faith and their community will be a source of consolation, but the emotional pain they are suffering is very hard to endure. I understand why they have pursued this appeal and deeply regret that I cannot do more to help them. As a judge, however, my duty is to apply the law, and in this case, the law requires me to dismiss the appeal for the reasons I have given.” The family is expected to bring the case before England’s Supreme Court. Klal Yisroel is asked to continue their tefillos on behalf of the Fixslers and Alta.

At Long Last, Legoland Fully Open In what is expected to be a boon for local tourism, Legoland New York is now fully open for business, with all seven of the park’s themed lands ready for guests large and small. Located in Goshen off of Route 17, Legoland was originally scheduled to open last July, but COVID-related delays pushed off the much-anticipated event by a full year. According to the Times Herald-Record, it took three years to construct the 150-acre theme park at a cost of $500 million. While the park has been operating on a limited basis since May, it celebrated its full opening on July 9. Legoland is the first major theme park to open in the Northeast in more than 40 years. The New York park is the third Legoland site in the United States and the ninth in the world. Each of its seven distinct sections has its own rides and attractions, with the iconic toy’s fun augmented by an educational element aimed at children ages two to twelve. The park’s Factory Adventure Ride is unique to the New York park, transforming guests into Lego mini-figures to give them a firsthand look at how Lego bricks are made. It is one of several attractions designed to accommodate children of all abilities, including a sensory room where children can enjoy a more laid-back environment. Legoland’s on-site 250 room hotel will be taking bookings as of August 6. Governor Andrew Cuomo hailed the park’s opening as a much-needed balm to the Hudson Valley’s COVID-ravaged economy, bringing with it 1,000 jobs and a $300 million impact. “This magnificent destination for people of all ages will help spur the Mid-Hudson region’s economic recovery, jumpstart the state’s critical tourism industry and provide a worldclass, family-friendly experience for travelers from all over the world,” said Cuomo.

CHAPTER SIXTEEN RECAP: Aryeh,

Bassi’s husband, visits the Reinesses with his young boys. The boys meet Osher and make fun of his name. The rav advises the Erenbaums to allow Ariella to go to Acco — for both Osher’s sake and her own.

omething was subconsciously keeping Irit back from letting Ariealla go. “Tomorrow?” she asked with obvious skepticism. “Are you sure? It’s Wednesday! Wouldn’t it be better for you to wait until after Shabbos?” “I would actually be interested to know how he spends Shabbos there,” Ariella said. Her father nodded along. “And I made up with Mrs. Abramov that I’ll be coming before Shabbos. They use products with Badatz certification only, and she seems very happy to have me.” “She sounds nice,” her mother said. “But it’s hard for me to think about you being there alone for Shabbos.” “I won’t be alone,” Ariella said tersely. “That’s right — you’re never alone. But we will miss you here.” “And I’ll miss you too,” Ariella said. “But if I need to go anyway, then why push it off? What difference does it make if it’s this Shabbos or next Shabbos?” “I hope you’ll be back by next Shabbos,” her mother said. Ariella leaned back on the couch and remained silent. “All right.” Her mother sighed. “So, b’ezras Hashem, you’ll go tomorrow, and I hope you’ll be a good shaliach. Did you make a list of things you need to pack?” “Yes, and it will probably take me hours to do all the packing,” Ariella said as she stood up. “So maybe it’s a good idea for me to go home and get started.” “Won’t you wait for Shoshi and Lakey to get home? Oh…” “What’s the matter?”

Irit got up and straightened the tablecloth. “Nothing really. They probably don’t want me to say why… but it’s important for them to see you before you leave.” “So maybe tell them to come over to me later?” Irit looked at her daughter. She sometimes had to remind herself that Ariella was an adult, with her own life. She needed quiet and the privacy of her own four walls, especially when she was exhausted. “Sure, go, sweetie. Would you like for Tatty to take you to the station tomorrow?” “We’ll see when I get up. If it’ll be early enough, I’ll call to see if he’s available to take me. If not, I’ll take a bus to the train station.” Ariella seemed to be in a hurry to escape, as if she was afraid of the impending good wishes, goodbyes and brachos. “We’ll talk later.” Irit busied herself with the flowers on the table, trying to make the moment easier for her daughter. “It’s not like once upon a time. You have a phone, and you’ll make sure to take your charger, of course, so we can be in touch there.” “Oh, thanks for reminding me about that. I’ll write it on my list the minute I get home.” As she made a move toward the door, Lakey and Shoshi walked in. “Ariella, are you leaving?” Lakey gasped. “Wait, we have something for you!” Theatrically, the two sisters presented their gift: a silver camera displayed on a carton wrapped in black. Standing behind it was a black and purple camera case, with a few wires and cords bound by a purple satin ribbon. “A camera! Oh my, you two really overdid it! It looks very expensive,” Ariella said, partly grateful, partly shocked. “You didn’t have to spend so much on me!” “Yes, we did,” Shoshi informed her. “But I’ll admit that the gift is not only from us. I mean, it’s hardly from us. Anyway, look at the card.” “I’m reading it now.” Leaning on the wall in the small hallway, Ariella opened the card and read out loud: “May you find your Osher, your happiness…”

We were in the inner room, in the middle of a Mishnayos shiur, when the door to the carpentry shop opened. Reb Elazar did not hear it, apparently, because he continued to explain, “Eilu devarim b’Pesach dochin es ha’Shabbos.” He didn’t even realize at first that a few of the boys were exchanging glances. Then I stood up. “Osher?” the Rav asked. “Did you want to say something?” “I want to see who went into the carpentry shop,” I said. He thought for a moment, but didn’t say anything and then continued teaching. Reb Elazar doesn’t usually comment when I get up to move around or leave in the middle of a shiur. He claims that the whole shiur is not mandatory for us; whoever wants to can come in to learn. I usually join. And sometimes I leave. I walked out of the room and into the shop. Suddenly it struck me how different the two rooms were. The room we were learning in was the oldest room in the building. It didn’t look like it was ever renovated, or even painted. By comparison, the shop looked like a wedding hall — and so did the

house upstairs. I wanted to see the differences again, so I went back into the shiur room. I noticed the old-fashioned rounded doorway, the really old walls with plaster peeking through the paint. I could also see long cracks snaking up to the ceiling. Then I looked up at the ceiling itself, which was adorned with all kinds of interesting geometric designs. “Osher?” Reb Elazar looked at me. “So, did someone come in?” “Uh, I don’t know. I just wanted to see how old this room is.” I stepped out again. I skirted all the planks ready to be cut and walked to the front of the room. Yes, the door was not fully closed, and I thought I saw a shadow behind the bookcase. “Hello, be careful over there!” I said. “My friend worked very hard on that bookcase. It’s not that stable when it’s not anchored to a wall, so please, be careful not to knock it over.” “Why don’t you just anchor it to the wall?” said the shadow who emerged from behind the bookcase. I looked at the man. He wore a tiny yarmulka and carried a black case. My first thought was that I hoped he wasn’t someone from the government coming to check how things were run here. Who knows? Now, because of what I said about the bookcase, they might say it’s a dangerous place… “These bookcases don’t usually fall,” I said. “We make them very, very sturdy. But you know, things can happen in all kinds of places.” “That’s right,” the man said, looking at me. “The question is, what happens here?” “Here? Wonderful things happen here.” I sat down on the swivel chair that belonged to Shlomo Matari, our professional carpenter, and pointed all around. “Look at what beautiful and professional work we do. But we’re closed now. We’re not taking orders.” “We are not taking orders?” someone else said from behind me. “Since when do you take orders from anyone, Osher?” It was Dovid, who had recently become

Shlomo’s assistant, sort of. He walked around my chair and approached the stranger. I couldn’t help but gawk at his enormous height, and for the first time, I wondered how old he was. “Hello, there,” he said to the man. “We’re closed for the day. You can come back tomorrow from ten in the morning, and we’ll be happy to serve you.” “Who said I came for the carpentry shop?” the man asked. “Then what do you want?” Dovid asked. “I have a personal matter that I want to discuss with the rabbi,” he said. “When is he finishing the shiur?” I stood up and walked back into the other room. The door to the shiur room, which was made from a few ancient,

followed the Rav out. Some boys walked into the kitchen; others went down to the water. Only Effy Green, drinking peachflavored seltzer, still sat in the corner. He looked at me, though he didn’t say a word when I walked around the room, examining the walls and the corner. I focused on a crack behind the Rav’s shtender and tried to listen to the voices coming from the shop. I couldn’t quite hear the words, but it was easy to discern the man’s raised voice and the Rav’s soothing tone. “Is he screaming at him?” I asked Effy. He glanced at me with half a smile, the kind of smile that I hate, and asked, “The wall at the shtender?” “What?” I was thrown off-guard. Then I realized what he meant, and bristled. “No! That man, at Reb Elazar!” “How should I know?” Effy shrugged as he placidly screwed shut the cap on the seltzer bottle. “They’re over there and I’m here. Like you.” I ran my finger over the crack. There was a hole at the point where the crack came to an end. I stuck my finger inside, generating a small landslide of plaster and sand. “Are you looking for a treasure?” Effy asked as he stood up. “A treasure?” I almost swallowed my tongue. “No, I don’t think there’s any treasure here.” But even before I finished the sentence, I began to think about how nice it would be to discover a treasure. Not that it would be mine if I’d find it, because it was Reb Elazar’s house, but perhaps, as a token of appreciation, he would give me a small percentage... Even before I finished that thought, another thought jumped in to tell me that if there really was a treasure here, then the Rav certainly knew about it; that was probably why he didn’t want to sell his house. And he definitely wouldn’t need me to make a big deal about it. “Anyway, even if there was, he wouldn’t want me to publicize it or anything,” I said. “Who?” Effy, who was already stand-

“It’s too bad that we can’t reach an agreement,” the man said. I hadn’t liked the looks of him from the first minute, but he looked even less pleasant now.

swollen pieces of wood, never managed to fit neatly into the door frame. That’s why it was always open. I stood there and stuck a finger into the hole where the doorknob used to be, thinking how strange it was that this door was still here. “Osher?” the Rav asked. He was standing next to me; the shiur must have come to an end. “Why don’t you replace the door, Rebbi?” “We really should replace this one; you’re right.” Reb Elazar smiled broadly, but I saw that his eyes were not on me; they were searching out the visitor. He didn’t need to search for long; as soon as the man realized that the lesson was over, he came hurrying over from the other side of the shop. I looked again at the slats of wood that we called a “door.” Couldn’t it be replaced? What about the rest of the room? I walked inside. Most of the others had

ing at the doorway, glared at me, but I didn’t answer him. The voices of the Rav and his visitor were very close now, and I quickly straightened up and moved away from the wall. But they didn’t come in. Instead, I went out to them. “It’s too bad that we can’t reach an agreement,” the man said. I hadn’t liked the looks of him from the first minute, but he looked even less pleasant now. “I think we’ve come to a very clear agreement,” Reb Elazar said. “I’m not interested in selling the building. What more do I have to say than that?” “But, Mister, why don’t you understand that you’re ruining the whole project? It’s the entire row on this alley, and it makes no sense that because of this worthless building, the whole development should be held up! You know, we come, we speak nicely, we’re offering a sum of money that is far beyond what this property is really worth… Why are you being so stubborn?!” “I’m sorry.” Reb Elazar kept smiling. “But for now, I haven’t changed my mind.” “It doesn’t work that way!” The man’s forehead was red and dotted with beads of sweat. “It makes no sense that because of the whims of one person, an entire project — which we’ve invested millions into — should be held up! I hope you understand that.” “I’m trying to understand, but something is very unclear to me.” “What’s not clear to you?” The guy was very aggressive and quite off-putting. The other boys standing and listening didn’t like his tone, either; I could see that. They exchanged glances. “Why should any developer invest millions into a project when the land in question is not even available to him?” I got tired of listening to the conversion. I passed them on my way out and saw Dovid standing with his arms folded, his eyes shooting daggers at the man’s back. “I don’t like this guy,” he muttered to me. “I don’t either,” I said. I picked up one of the files lying on the bench. It had a green, smooth handle and was cool to the touch. I looked at the remnant of the plank on the table, and without thinking what I was doing, etched a picture of a box into it. I don’t draw too well, but it was obvious that I was drawing a box. Inside I wrote: Treasure. My handwriting happens to be really nice. Suddenly, someone walked by. “I told you that’s what you’re looking for!” he said with a laugh. I didn’t turn around to Effy, nor did I answer him. I finished the letters while I continued listening to Reb Elazar and the man arguing with him. “It’s a shame; you’re really wasting your time. Like I keep telling you, my answer is no.” I had never heard the Rav sounding so sharp before. “I’ll be back,” the irate visitor said. “I’ll be back, and you’ll see that you won’t be able to refuse us so easily. Even if the house is yours, Mr. Reiness, you can’t change everyone’s plans regarding an entire alley!” Then he stomped out the door. The man was gone, but he left a very unpleasant atmosphere behind. And it hung in the air for the rest of the evening. To be continued…

n g i z o i c n e g R shia c o h M An enhanced sense of “Moshiach awareness” has come upon the world since the onset of COVID-19 last year. With all that has transpired since then, the mournful cry of “ad masai?” has reverberated in our hearts and on our lips. When will Moshiach finally come? we wonder. When will this galus finally end?

Taken by our dreams of the Geulah, we often find ourselves swept up in the signs of the times, dwelling on clues that we’ve been told hint to the imminent arrival of Moshiach. These can include legitimate prophecies of long ago, as well as portions of the Gemara that describe both the eras preceding Moshiach and that of the tekufas Moshiach itself. But the heilige Rambam, the great codifier of Jewish law, writes in his Mishneh Torah that one must not attempt to determine

Throughout history, claimants to the title of “Moshiach” have surfaced time and again, but each time they haven’t passed the test. How will we know when the real Moshiach has finally arrived?

the specific manner in which events will occur because “neither the order of the occurrence of these events nor their precise details are among the fundamental principles of the faith.” As much as we dream of the Geulah and recognize that we are at the threshold of a new era, only time will reveal exactly how things will unfold. What is incumbent upon us, the Rambam writes, is to believe in the coming of Moshiach, as well as to anticipate his coming. One who doesn’t believe in Moshiach’s coming, or one who believes but doesn’t anxiously await the coming, is bluntly called a kofer — a heretic. Because this chiyuv is such a fundamental part of Yiddishkeit, we should know exactly what it is we are awaiting.

Why We Want Moshiach Without understanding precisely why we need Moshiach, our anticipation can be misguided, leaving us to yearn not for Moshiach himself but for the good things we’ve heard may occur in the Messianic era. In truth, then, our yearning would be for the health of our loved ones, the reunion with those we’ve lost, the safety of our people, and so on. But is that really yearning for Moshiach? The Rambam offers clarity: The Sages and the prophets did not yearn for the Messianic era in order to have dominion over the entire world, to rule over the non-Jews, to be exalted by the nations, or to eat, drink and celebrate. Rather, they desired to be free to involve themselves in Torah and wisdom without any pressures or disturbances, so that they would merit Olam Haba. – Melachim U’milchamos 10:4

stop. It is a yearning for the enhanced ability to engage in the study of the Torah and for the ability to fulfill the mitzvos in their entirety. It is about having a closer relationship with Hashem. If that is not our yearning, then we are not truly yearning for Moshiach.

Personal Qualifications As is known, the Rambam’s Mishneh Torah is a book of halacha, clearly delineating the legal obligations incumbent upon the Jewish nation. In the section dealing with kings and wars, the Rambam writes the requirements that must be fulfilled in order for one to be crowned Melech HaMoshiach. If one cannot halachically fulfill these requirements, he cannot be considered Moshiach. The personal requirements of Moshiach are as follows: 1.

He will be from the bloodline of Dovid Hamelech, and halachically fit to be anointed as king.

Identifying Moshiach Beyond the personal requirements that must be fulfilled, there are concrete actions that one must accomplish before he can even be considered a candidate for the position. There are two stages to the verification process: PH A SE

1:

Chezkas Moshiach — A Potential Moshiach

1.

He will compel all of Yisroel to walk in the ways of the Torah and rectify the breaches of observance.

1.

He will fight the “milchamos Hashem — the wars of Hashem.”

If one fulfills the personal qualifications of Moshiach, and causes a mass teshuvah movement, compelling Klal Yisroel to strengthen their Torah observance, and also engages in the “milchamos Hashem,” we are permitted to consider him Moshiach even before his status is confirmed beyond suspicion. The logical question one must ask, though, is: What exactly are the “milchamos Hashem”? The words of the Rambam here are not clear, leading one to wonder whether these wars will be spiritual or physical in nature, or a combination of both. Furthermore, will these wars be milchamos mitzvah against remnants of the seven nations and Amalek? Will they include the war of Gog u’Magog, of which we know little? The details are obscure. Therefore, one must keep his eyes trained on the established tzaddikim of the generation and follow their consensus. If they declare a potential Moshiach’s battles to not be those of Hashem, we must accept that as fact. If they adamantly declare that one is not Moshiach, we must accept that, too. PH A SE

2:

Moshiach B’vadai — The Confirmed Moshiach

Once the Moshiach candidate has fulfilled the requirements of Chezkas Moshiach, he must succeed in: 1.

Building the Beis Hamikdash in its proper place

2.

Gathering in the dispersed of Klal Yisroel

If the Chezkas Moshiach has succeeded in all of these points, the Rambam writes, “harei zeh Moshiach b’vadai — this is for sure Moshiach.” When the identity of Moshiach has been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt, many wonderful things will happen, but those are beyond the scope of this article. Now knowing the requirements of Moshiach, let us turn to the next pertinent piece of information: What Moshiach Is Not Required To Do

One should not presume that the Melech HaMoshiach must work miracles and wonders, bring about new phenomena in the world, resurrect the dead, or perform other similar deeds. This is definitely not true. – Melachim U’milchamos 11:3

The performance of wonders has been a stumbling block

The performance of wonders has been a stumbling block throughout the generations, with Yidden falling prey to charismatic cult leaders who seemed to possess supernatural powers.

throughout the generations, with Yidden falling prey to charismatic cult leaders who seemed to possess supernatural powers. It is vital for us to realize that Moshiach’s role as Moshiach is not in any way contingent upon the performance of supernatural events. Of course, that doesn’t mean that Moshiach will be incapable of performing wonders and miracles, for he may well do so. It is simply not a “job requirement,” nor is it a way to identify Moshiach. The Rambam brings as proof of this fact that one potential Moshiach (of whom we will soon speak) did not perform miracles, and despite that, was considered a valid candidate by some of the greatest Sages and tzaddikim the world has ever known. “...Rabbi Akiva, one of the greater Sages of the Mishnah, was one of the supporters of King Bar Koziba and would describe him as Melech HaMoshiach. He and all the Sages of his generation considered him to be Melech HaMoshiach until he was killed because of sins. Once he was killed, they realized that

he was not Moshiach. The Sages did not ask him for any signs or wonders.” – Melachim U’milchamos 11:3

The Torah has provided us with clear halachos of who Moshiach is and what he will achieve. If ever arises one who turns the hearts of people toward him through his charisma and strength but fails the litmus test of halacha, he is clearly not Moshiach. Let us not go blindly into the days ahead, but to daven for the true Moshiach to come speedily and for us to merit both yemos haMoshiach and chayei ha’Olam Haba.

FAILED!

There have been many claimants to the title of Moshiach throughout history, but the vast majority never qualified even as Chezkas Moshiach. Many were quickly denounced by rabbanim, but others were revealed as false Moshiachs only after much damage had been done.

Shimon Bar Koziba Shimon bar Koziba, also known as Bar Kochba, lived during the times of Rabbi Akiva and seemed to be heading toward fulfilling the requirements of Moshiach. In addition to being a chashuve Yid, he commanded a completely religious army that led a revolt against the Romans. They managed to push back the Roman legions for several years, leading his generation to believe he was fighting “milchamos Hashem.” With eyes to the future, Bar Koziba ruled as a Jewish king for two and half years, and even began planning toward rebuilding the Beis Hamikdash. Ultimately, however, Bar Koziba’s downfall came on the 9th of Av, 3893, when the Romans brutally slaughtered half a million Yidden who were in the city of Beitar — Bar Koziba’s stronghold — leaving their remains scattered for many months. Tragically, Bar Koziba did not turn out to be Moshiach.

A False Moshiach in Yemen During the days of the Rambam there arose a man in Yemen who claimed to be Moshiach. In the Iggeres Teiman, a letter penned to a rav there, the Rambam expressed his surprise over the rav’s failure to recognize the man’s lack of qualifications: You mention that a certain man in one of the cities of Yemen pretends that he is Moshiach. … I have no doubt that he is mad, and a sick person should not be rebuked or reproved for an illness brought on by no fault of his own. Neither am I surprised at his votaries, for they were persuaded by him because of their sorry plight, their ignorance of the importance and high rank of Moshiach... But I am astonished that you — a scholar who has studied carefully the doctrines of the rabbis — are inclined to repose faith in him. Do you not know, my brother, that Moshiach is a very eminent prophet, more illustrious than all the prophets after Moshe? … How odd is your remark about this man, that he is renowned for his meekness and little wisdom, as if these were indeed the attributes of Moshiach... Years later, in a letter to rabbanim of Southern France, the Rambam described the end of the story: I cautioned them to restrain that man lest he perish and the community with him. Finally, after a year he was taken into custody, and his adherents fled. When the king of the Arabs asked him, “Why have you done all this?” he replied, “I have done these things in accordance with G-d’s behest.” ‘”Can you prove that it is so?’ asked the king. “If you sever my head, I shall immediately be resurrected,” he responded. “I do not expect any better evidence than that,” said the king, “and if that miracle transpires, then not only I, but the whole world will acknowledge that our ancestral faith is false.” Whereupon they immediately killed that poor fellow; may his death be an atonement for him and for all Yisroel!

More “Moshiachs” of That Era Further in the Iggeres Teiman, the Rambam mentions several other false Moshiachs who had appeared in his heilige father’s days, some of whom won over believers due to the “miracles” they wrought. Here is the account of one: ...There appeared a man in Linon, a large center in the heart of France that numbered more than ten thousand Jewish families. He pretended that he was Moshiach. He was supposed to have performed the following miracles: On moonlit nights he would go out and climb to the top of high trees in the field and glide from tree to tree like a bird. He cited a verse from Daniel to prove that such a miracle was within the power of Moshiach: “And behold, there came with the clouds of heaven one like unto a son of man ... And there was given him dominion.” (7:13–14). Many who witnessed the miracle became his votaries. The French discovered this, pillaged and put many of his followers to death, together with the pretender.

Moshe of Crete In another era, one Moshe of Crete was said to have so inspired his followers that he encouraged them to jump, en masse, into the ocean — promising them the seas would split for them as in the days of Yetzias Mitzayim. Many died or were injured on that day, and that false Moshiach disappeared, leaving behind a broken community.

Shabbesai Tzvi One of the most famous of false Moshiachs, Shabbesai Tzvi whipped the masses into an unprecedented Messianic fervor. Many were smitten by his charisma to the point that they believed him when he claimed that, according to Kabbalah, his sins — which included eating chelev d’Oraisa, being mechalel Shabbos, and pronouncing the Shem Hameforash, among others — were actually deeds of righteousness. Due to the incredible control Shabbesai Tzvi retained over huge portions of the Jewish community, the Sultan of Turkey felt extremely threatened. He imprisoned Shabbesai Tzvi, forcing him to choose between converting to Islam or death. The cowardly Shabbesai Tzvi chose to accept upon himself the Muhammedan faith. He left a tremendous number of crushed people behind, though he took others with him. There is said to still be a community of heretics in Turkey who live according to his teachings.

Joseph Frank Appearing in the days of the Baal Shem Tov, zt”l, and the Vilna Gaon, zt”l, Joseph Frank claimed to be a gilgul of Shabbesai Tzvi and roused thousands of members of the Jewish community to follow him. He confused their minds, leading them to commit the most heinous of aveiros. Ultimately, the Frankists were placed in cherem by the rabbanim of that era, but the damage was already done: Thousands of Yidden were forever lost to the nation as the Frankists strayed ever farther from the ways of the heilige Torah, eventually converting to Catholicism and melting into the surrounding peoples.

Yeshua Hanotzri The most well-known false Moshiach of all time was Yeshua Hanotzri (Yoshke), and the number of people who believe in his being Moshiach is currently at an all-time high. These days, some of his followers can be found sporting talleisim, yarmulkes, learning Gemara, and peppering their speech with both Yiddish and Lashon Hakodesh. While some of them are Jewish through ancestry, the majority are not. These missionaries use rabbinic commandments (Shabbos candles, covering the head, etc.) to create an illusion of Jewishness, while in actually, they reject the Oral Torah. It is important to know what to answer to these kofrim, as they have been recently found infiltrating the heimishe community. According to them, the Notzri had no paternal human lineage. Should this be true, it would automatically disqualify him as being from the Davidic line, as tribal lineage runs only through one’s biological father. (The Rambam writes that his father was actually a non-Jew; either way, he was disqualified.) Furthermore, he was certainly not diligent in observance, and his followers even admit he was openly mechalel Shabbos! As one who could not pass even the personal qualifications of Moshiach, it is obvious that he was incapable of fulfilling the others. Moreover, the Rambam writes of a potential Moshaich: “If he did not succeed [in fulfilling all the requirements] or was killed, he is surely not the redeemer promised by the Torah.” Being killed — as the Notzri was — puts an end to any Messianic aspiration.

All things considered, the Notzri did serve a positive purpose in the world. As the Rambam writes: The intent of the Creator of the world is not within the power of man to comprehend, for His ways are not our ways, nor are His thoughts our thoughts. Ultimately, all the deeds of Yeshua Hanotzri and that Ishmaelite who arose after him will serve only to prepare the way for Moshiach’s coming and the improvement of the entire world, motivating the nations to serve Hashem together… The entire world has already become filled with the mention of Moshiach, Torah and mitzvos. These matters have been spread to the furthermost islands to many stubborn-hearted nations. They discuss these matters and the mitzvos of the Torah, saying: “These mitzvos were true, but were already negated in the present age and are not applicable for all time.” Others say: “Implied in the mitzvos are hidden concepts that cannot be understood simply. The Moshiach has already come and revealed those hidden truths.” When the true Moshiach will arise and prove successful, his position becoming exalted and uplifted, they will all return and realize that their ancestors endowed them with a false heritage and their prophets and ancestors caused them to err.” May that day come soon.

The Elucidated Tomer Devorah by Rabbi Shmuel Meir Riachi My husband and I just started learning this book (it’s actually the second time we’re learning it). It explains the first chapters of the sefer Tomer Devorah written by Reb Moshe Cordovero, which explores the thirteen Middos Harachamim of Hashem and how we should emulate Hashem’s ways in treating others. We had heard it’s a beautiful sefer, which prompted us to buy it, and indeed, the awareness of these middos was life-changing for us and helped us in our interpersonal relationships. Fu t u re

The Secret to Simcha by C.T. Friedman Prompted by a joint decision to grow, several years ago my friends and I arranged a daily morning phone conference to learn this book. It’s a great forum, and the fact that it takes place in the morning means that the entire day that follows is just different. The lessons are so practical and actionable and spill over into day-to-day life. We actually completed this set of booklets a few times, moved on to an amazing sefer on emunah that we did twice, and then came back to these lessons. An interesting thing I learned here is that simcha, too, is a reflection of one’s level of emunah!

Living Emunah series by Rabbi Dovid Ashear

Spare the Child by Rabbi Yechiel Yaakovson

My husband and I began learning the first sefer when we were going through a challenging period in our life. At that point we had only one car, and my husband was driving me to work. We started off by reading one section a day in the car, and we’ve continued learning it until this point. We went through all five volumes and have reviewed many of them. More recently, when my mother-in-law was going through a challenging period during the pandemic, we offered to learn it with her as well, and we now learn together.

When I was off from work after the birth of my baby several months ago, I found myself with more time on my hands (and a son who was especially difficult to handle, which motivated me a lot!), and I decided to read this book

We have seen tremendous shifts in our mindset and reactions to situations, all as a result of reading this series. There is a slow transformation that takes place as we read it each day. But we didn’t necessarily notice the incremental change until we took a step back and realized how we were responding to situations so differently than we had in the past. Fu t u re

a sp ir at i o n s:

I would continue learning these volumes, as there is never enough reviewing of emunah. This is a topic that needs constant work and strengthening. I’m looking forward to the next volume that will hopefully come out!

I soon found a certain clarity in my parenting. Before reading the book I was winging it without much direction or mindfulness, and now, even though I haven’t (yet!) implemented much of what’s in the book, the clarity and awareness I’m gaining is providing me with a level of confidence and a perspective that automatically improves the atmosphere in our home. I think I need to read and reread and reread the book before moving on to something new. It’s extremely deep, thorough and long — every time I read it I find new insight and tools that I hadn’t fully absorbed previously. I think I’ll be sticking with this book for a while. Fu t u re

I’ve recently restarted Rav Shimshon Pinkus’ sefer on the Three Weeks to help me tap into the mood of this season.

Anger: The Inner Teacher by Rav Zelig Pliskin I’ve long since had the desire to shape up in these areas, so about a year ago I purchased this book and have been learning it on my own. It’s giving me an amazing sense of awareness, focus and desire to improve. One thing that struck me strongly was that it seemed like “just” anger, but in actuality, this is a middah that is at the root of so many other negative interactions and traits, and working on this area really goes far. The book is written in such a way that really pushes you to change. So long as I keep the book at my bedside, I feel strong.

Faith Over Fear by Rabbi Yehuda Keilson My husband had read the book in the past and liked it so he bought it. We started off learning it together, but then I continued on my own. I read it in a few spurts, and still hope to finish it completely. The sefer is written on a very practical level, and I’ve seen how bitachon can really bring about desired results.

Upon, baruch Hashem, being blessed with children in 1995 after years of waiting, I began learning hilchos shemiras halashon as an expression of my appreciation to Hashem. I’ve still kept at it until today, switching to a new sefer every few years. I’ve added a focus on ona’as devarim and have read other Chofetz Chaim books on positive speech. Each book I read inspires me, especially when I had just started. I realized that throughout my years of challenges, I had let my positivity to others slide; instead I focused on negativity and was quick to begrudge others their good fortune. I still have a long way to go in my shemiras halashon, but b’siyata d’Shmaya, I’m in a better place than I was when I started!

Hungary, 1940s “Will you take her? We will come fetch her.” Here the deep voice trembles, wavers. “When we will be back...” A charming babe held out, one last toothless smile. A cloth bag, heavy with coins, clinks as it is relegated to new ownership. Shaky steps, one last hug for the child who squirms and reaches out to her mother. Tearful goodbyes, eyes hazy with disbelief, and then they are alone and quiet. The streets reek of danger. They run, run and hear the girl’s sweet cries fade into the distance as they approach home with empty arms. * * * * * *

It seemed as though the world itself was a whisper, eerily silent and gray. The future looked dark. Was there even going to be a future? Rumors abounded of Jews only miles away being burned to ashes. Families, communities, lives torn asunder by menacing beasts who felt it was their duty. Men shook their heads in concern. Teenagers whispered and worried. Women wrung their hands in dismay. They held their young ones close, as if to protect them. Prayers arose, desperate and warm. You are the only One who can save us! Help us, Tatte Zeese, please, please. What to do? Some had chosen to run away — but who knew what was coming, which place would be next? So they stayed, Mordche Usher and Chaya and their Rochel

and her husband, already with a child of their own. They davened and hoped with a feverish optimism that somehow they would be spared. The flame of life in a person fights to live, to dream. But the clicking of the Nazi boots was not too far away. White dust rose majestically as they marched forward, as if cloaked in spirits of pride. They wore calm smiles as they killed in the name of culture. A fierce terror struck the family. The end was close, the stench of murder tickling their nostrils. What to do? Where to go? They were ready to claw at anything, just for another day of freedom, of breath and learning and smiling. But at least they had a plan for the young child who babbled and giggled as if the world hadn’t turned black. Maybe … the Fredericks. The non-Jewish elderly couple next door. They had always gotten along marvelously and been politely respectful of each other’s customs and way of life. Maybe they could be a refuge for her, pretend she was their own? Rochel and her husband struggled valiantly. How

Her heart pounded with a sudden, desperate longing to scoop her unknowing daughter into her arms, to feel her young heartbeat... just one last time.

could they make such a decision? To leave their daughter — their child! — in strange hands? For her pure soul to be soiled with sights that she would never otherwise see? For her to play and be held in hands sullied with sin? And who knew for how long?

But was there any other choice? Rochel’s heart pounded with a sudden, desperate longing to scoop her unknowing daughter into her arms, to feel her young heartbeat... just one last time. Should she just bring the baby with her? To the grounds of death and dogs? To watch her slowly fade away, to hear her hungry cries, with nothing to give? The streets were dark and shrouded in mystery. It seemed even the birds had flown away in fear. But as the night wore on and pink veins began lighting up the sky, she knew. It was the safest option. It would give their child the greatest chance of surviving. So they ran, the three of them, their feet wretchedly slapping the cobblestones. Tomorrow they were to be rounded up, said Hertz. The familiar brown door at the end of the street suddenly looked sinister. “Will you take her? We will come fetch her.” Here her father’s deep voice trembled, wavered. “When we will be back...” A quick decision, greedy eyes hungrily checking out the cloth bag of coins. She searched their faces for a hint of kindness, of understanding, but was met with stone walls and false smiles. It happened too quickly. This is my Gittele! Rochel yearned to shout as Mrs. Frederick tied her steel-gray locks into a tight bun and held the child sternly. Look after her! She likes her carrots finely blended and her bath quite warm… It was all on the neat letter, she knew; she had written it, after all. But she felt like this was too cold a transaction. The door slammed. She felt her heart clench as she walked away, away... and she closed her eyes to stem the flow of tears. Her hands hung limply at her sides, testimony to a mother’s broken heart. * * * * * *

“Heil Hitler!” The husky voices were coming closer and closer, so loud and threatening. As if in a stupor of disbelief, the family stumbled around to collect their valuables, hide them, quick. The sky was a cheerful sea of blue, so alive. How could the world bloom as they were being led like sheep to their end? Soon their enemy was right there, in the town square, parading around with flaxen heads held high. The Yid-

den shuffled forward, as ordered, their heads low in worry. Babies screamed, as if sensing the terror. Young children with sparkling eyes questioned, then fell silent when they saw there seemed to be no answers. The Nazis sneered and let their menacing dogs roam free. Parents fought to maintain a semblance of calm as they hugged and promised and soothed, secretly placing heirlooms in shoes and coats. Venerable leaders with snowy white beards calmed the hysterical crowd with words of emunah, describing a loving Father in Heaven doing this for their best. “Let us sanctify His Name in whichever way He chooses!” the whisper arose in the shadow of death. The huddle of people was soon forcibly split into two groups. Rochel thought of her youngling here in her arms, in the wraith of murder. Although she yearned for her warmth, she was confident with her decision. Hopefully her child would have a future. Maybe they would even have a future together, she dreamed, when the sun would shine once again. People pointed out the wooden cattle cars nearby. What were they possibly for? There were no animals around. It wouldn’t be too long before they found out. Soon the Nazis were shoving them in, old and young alike until there was not even an inch left. Rochel held onto her parents, their faces gray, eyes unfocused. She peered out. There was no one left in the square now. Inside the cars there was a cacophony of noise, an overwhelming claustrophobia of human smell and panic. Outside, the Nazis sat relaxing as they toasted each other over glasses of glistening white wine. A familiar cry shattered their party. Obscure figures rushed forward from the hazy distance. No — no —no — no — Her fingernails dug into her smooth skin. Helpless desperation washed over her as she battled to keep her mouth closed, to stay composed despite the scene unfurling before her. The Fredericks walked with straight backs. They were coming toward her, toward the mayhem of destruction swirling around her, inside her. And they were bringing her darling with rosy cheeks. No, not her Gittele, led to her death! She scrabbled for something, anything, to squeeze, but found only faces, skin, children everywhere. Keep her!

But when they are slapping hands with the Nazi soldiers and she sees their triumphant smirks, she knows it is all over. They throw her child into the cattle car, tiny hands flailing. This is the couple her father paid, the couple she grew up with, the couple who had the chance to save her child, but threw her to the lions instead. They can’t do this! But their greed had long been satisfied with the thick cloth bag in their home. Her baby lights up at seeing her. A groan arises. Not another person. Her hands shake with fury. Traitors! Tears fall from her eyes, landing on a freckled face at her feet. Someone begs her for water. The Nazis stand and salute, and the engine begins rumbling. She holds her child close to her heart. I love you, my daughter, she whispers as the noise swells. Their eyes meet, blue on blue, and then they are off, never to be seen again.

The kitchen is flying. Peels and bags and toys are scattered everywhere. Shea screams, a constant howl that thuds in my ears. Let me just finish this, I beg silently, but the anger in his tone only increases. Soon my husband will be home, and there is no supper to speak of. I pick Shea up and his cries miraculously subside. You’re so spoiled! Then I try putting him down in his stroller, and he wails in dismay. Waaah! His tinny voice echoes through the room, bounces off the windows. Someone bangs on the door. I wish he would be quiet, be quiet. When will I get everything done? Tomorrow there is that dentist appointment, and Mr. Gordon had scheduled a meeting, and what about gowns for Sheva’s wedding, and... One thought stands out in the mess of ideas and jobs running through my mind. Yesterday I had spoken about my great-grandfather’s sister and her story. How she had selflessly given up her only child, only to have her thrown back in her face when there was no chance left for life. I look at my sweet baby boy with his blonde tufts and clear blue eyes, and really look at him. Did Gittele’s young eyes also sparkle? Shea stares up at me, so trusting, so needy. I love you, I chant, taking his small hand in mine. I imagine Rochel holding her daughter, soothing her, calming her, even as demons in the guise of humanity danced in the valley of death. Then I scoop up my son and hold him close to my heart. You are not forgotten, golden child, I whisper. I will tell your story, over and over again, the tale of the child whose life was snatched away before she could run in the sunshine. I close my eyes and sing to my son, and in my mind, the vision of a pretty girl smiles at me as she listens with beautiful, sparkling blue eyes.

Seudah Hamafsekes • There is no seudah hamafsekes when Tisha B’Av falls on Sunday (or is a nidche).

Learning on Tisha B’Av • The Rema cites the minhag not to learn on Erev Tisha B’Av, except for the items permitted to learn on Tisha B’Av itself. • Many poskim argue against this Rema and permit learning on Erev Tisha B’Av. • L’halacha, it is preferable to learn Tisha B’Av topics on Erev Tisha B’Av, but if one desires to learn other material, he may be lenient in this regard. • Although it is not permitted to learn on Tisha B’Av, one is allowed to learn the sugyos related to the Churban and devarim haro’im (other tragic events), as well as all of hilchos Tisha B’Av. • According to many poskim, there is an obligation to learn the above topics on Tisha B’Av as talmud Torah. • One would be exempt from talmud Torah only when fully absorbed in the Churban, but today people are generally not on that level.

Fasting on Tisha B’Av • One who is aching or has mild pain should fast, unless bedridden or sick with a condition.

Here we present a summary of Hilchos Tisha B’av according to Ashkenazic custom, based on the Shulchan Aruch, poskim and the halacha shiurim of Rabbi Bezalel Rudinsky, Rosh Yeshivah of Yeshivas Ohr Reuven and Rav of Kahal Ahavas Yitzchok. This halacha summary was compiled by his talmid Rabbi Heshy Friedman.

• One who is ill and unable to fast should preferably eat and drink in minimum shiurim if possible, unless they have a preexisting health condition. • A woman within 30 days of childbirth does not fast on Tisha B’Av. • Women in other extenuating circumstances are required to fast on Tisha B’Av, unless they are feeling ill. We follow the ruling of the poskim who hold that they are exempt from fasting on Tisha B’Av that is a nidche.

Washing and Anointing on Tisha B’Av • One may wash his hands and body if they are dirty. • Netilas yadayim and washing after using the

bathroom are done up to the knuckles, in the same manner as on Yom Kippur. • One who moves his bowels washes his hands fully with soap afterward. • One may apply deodorant on Tisha B’Av. • One may use moisturizer or cream to heal dry skin on Tisha B’Av.

Leather Shoes on Tisha B’Av • Although all non-leather shoes are permitted, shoes that have a soft bottom through which one can feel the ground (such as slippers, Crocs or flip-flops) are preferred. • Even children who are not fasting should avoid wearing leather shoes.

Greeting on Tisha B’Av • One may not greet a friend on Tisha B’Av, and this includes saying “good morning.” • Saying “hello,” however, is permitted. • One needs to be careful not to offend anyone by ignoring them because of this halacha. If one is greeted, there is an obligation to respond, though it should be done in a lower tone than usual.

Tisha B’Av Activities • One should not try to “kill time” on Tisha B’Av, but should rather spend time on things that are appropriate for the somber nature of the day. • One should not go for a walk, take a leisurely shopping trip, or chat idly on Tisha B’Av. • Regular household activities such as food shopping and meal preparation may be conducted. • The Rema states the custom to visit a cemetery after leaving from shul on Tisha B’Av morning.

Working on Tisha B’Av • Preferably, one should take off from work on Tisha B’Av. • If one cannot take the entire day off from work, he should refrain from working at least until chatzos. • Any melacha that involves a process that takes

time should also be avoided on Tisha B’Av. • One who does work on Tisha B’Av will not see siman bracha from that melacha. • One may have a non-Jew do work for them on Tisha B’Av.

General Tisha B’Av Halachos • One should limit his comfort level when going to sleep on Tisha B’Av, such as by using fewer pillows than usual. • Since the tallis is not put on until the afternoon, one should make a bracha on tzitzis upon donning a tallis katan in the morning. • If one forgot Nachem or Aneinu in Shemoneh Esrei, and he has already finished the bracha, he does not need to go back or repeat Shemoneh Esrei.

After Tisha B’Av • Our general minhag is to wait until after Tisha B’Av to recite Kiddush Levanah. • All activities prohibited during the Nine Days and Three Weeks may be resumed the day after Tisha B’Av at chatzos. • If Tisha B’Av falls on Shabbos and is nidche, one may wash laundry and cut their hair immediately after the fast ends on Sunday night. • During a nidche, one must wait until the morning after Tisha B’Av to consume meat and wine, but need not wait until chatzos. • When Tisha B’Av falls or is observed on Sunday, Havdalah may be made on wine or grape juice. The Havdalah comprises only Hamavdil and Borei Pri Hagafen. • When Tisha B’Av falls on Thursday, one may bathe and cut their hair on Friday morning, and need not wait until chatzos. • When Tisha B’Av falls on Thursday, one may wash laundry on Thursday night after Tisha B’Av if there is a great need, such as when there’s an overwhelming collection of laundry that children are waiting for.

HART ISLAND

Off the coast of the Bronx sits a narrow mile-long piece of land called Hart Island. It played a central role in New York’s history, yet it has remained relatively unknown, an obscurity it shares with the over 1 million poor and lonely New Yorkers laid to rest there. 108

There is something especially heartbreaking about a meis mitzvah who dies alone without anyone in the world caring for — or about — them. Most or all of these individuals had lived lives that could fill an entire book. Lives marked by pain, suffering, and yes, glimmers of hope and meaning. Anonymous to the world, perhaps, but as real and vivid as any privileged life they’ve been forced to observe from the sidelines. And then they’re gone. A life of indignity ending with the ultimate humiliation as the deceased is left with no connection to the living world. In our community, there are organizations and individuals seeing to it that our lonely brethren merit the respect of a proper Jewish burial, and that their names will not be completely lost to history. In secular society, on the contrary, a deceased with no identity becomes the burden of an impersonal government bureaucracy, a

final degradation unbecoming of the living or the dead. For the past 150 years, New York has been burying its unidentified, unclaimed and indigent on Hart Island. In all, over 1 million fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters have been interred at this potter’s field. No tombstones memorialize their lives. Just cold plot markers strewn about, identifying the large burial sections where some of New York’s most tragic stories come to an unceremonious end.

THE ISLAND Hart Island sits close to the Bronx at the beginning of the Long Island Sound, that long body of water separating Long Island from Connecticut. It is not clear how it got its name, but some suggest that it was so called because of the deer that roamed there (“hart” is a British term for grown male red deer). While close to bustling New York City, Hart Island is quiet and isolated, with no road access and no electricity. The island was first purchased from the Siwanoy Native American tribe by a Britishman named Thomas Pell in 1654.

It changed hands multiple times in the next two hundred years before finally being put to public use during the Civil War, both as a training site for Union Soldiers and as a camp for Confederate prisoners of war. Contrary to what one might expect, it is a beautiful island with attractive beaches on its Eastern side. In fact, it has been the proposed site of resorts and entertainment destinations. At one point it served as the place where illegal boxing matches took place, drawing thousands of spectators from among New York’s lowest ranks. Then, in 1925, a developer proposed to build an amusement park for Black people who were not allowed at nearby attractions. Construction was already well underway when the city forced him to sell the land to them. But the island never became a local paradise. Instead, it carries a history that’s more morbid than any of New York’s other islands.

THE SADDEST PLACE IN THE CITY In reviewing the history of Hart and other islands, a common thread emerges: As New York City was growing, these islands were the perfect place to get society’s unwanteds out of sight and out of mind. From the mid1800s to the mid-1900s, Hart’s many functions included, at different times, a rehabilitation center and a prison workhouse for young criminals; a tuberculosis hospital and a quarantine zone during the yellow fever epidemic; an insane asylum for women and an old age home for male prisoners; and a homeless shelter and disciplinary barracks for U.S. soldiers during World War II.

Most notably, when a German submarine dropped off a group of saboteurs on New York’s shore in June 1942, the arrested men were held at Hart Island for a time. The island was also home to one of the Nike anti-aircraft missile installations during the Cold War. Operated by the U.S. Army Air Defense Command, the missiles were designed to defend the U.S. homeland from attack by Soviet aircraft. Yet with all the transition on the island, one constant remained: the stream of burials by the city of New York. Some of the deceased were poor immigrants who left their entire lives behind in the old country. Others were victims of disease, thought to be contagious even after death. Many others were from families who simply couldn’t afford the cost of burial. Who buries the dead and maintains the island? Stop me if you’re surprised: prisoners from Rikers Island, who are paid around 50 cents per hour. Every week, the inmates are bused to nearby City Island where they board a ferry heading to the burial grounds.

HART ISLAND TODAY Until just over a year ago, very few New Yorkers could tell you about the island and its story. But the early wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, when thousands of New Yorkers were dying every week and city services were over-

whelmed, brought the island back into the limelight. The city had announced that the unclaimed dead would be interred on the island, and burial frequency increased fivefold for a while, going from one day a week to five. While 2019 saw fewer than 850 burials, 2020 saw about three times that amount. A slew of news stories about the island and its operations renewed awareness about this plot of land of over 100 acres. The city hired contractors for the job, with a Corrections Department spokesman stating, “For social distancing and safety reasons, city-sentenced people in custody are not assisting in burials for the duration of the pandemic.” Records of those laid to rest on the island are incomplete beyond the past 40 years, but much has been improved on that front due to the work of the Hart Island Project, a non-profit devoted to helping families access records and increase transparency and awareness about the island and its grim operations. The aforementioned group has also greatly helped increase access to families who want to visit a relative’s gravesite. For a number of years, a prayer group was allowed to visit the island, but participants were required to stay in a restricted area under a wooden gazebo. In 2014, the Corrections Department for the first time allowed close relatives to go beyond the gazebo and visit specific gravesites. Today, general visits to the island are arranged once per month, and gravesite visits are allowed twice per month for those with a very close relationship to the deceased. Photography on the island is prohibited, and every visitor has to submit a visit request form to schedule their appointment before they are allowed a chance to join these exclusive trips. Recent legislation has authorized the transfer of the island’s control from the Department of Corrections to the Department of Parks and Recreation, a move that is expected to make it more accommodating to the families as well as the general public.

Soldiers of other nations are frightened of an enemy that has them outgunned and outnumbere d. Not our Torah army. Let’s build some background on this age-old building material, brick by humble brick.

Ancient Bricks The mud brick was one of the first building materials. The Nile, Euphrates and Tigris rivers used to overflow and deposit mud or silt on the river banks. The people would pat them into cakes and allow them to sun-dry before piling them to form structures. In Ur, Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq), potters began using the closed kiln, a method that controlled heat to burn bricks. In Babylon and Assyria (Bavel and Ashur), they began glazing, or enameling, bricks. These were largely used to create beautiful mosaics.

A Hub Close to Home With some 302,647,000 bricks produced per year, Haverstraw, New York, earned the title “Brickmaking Capital of the World” in 1883. Roughly 2,500 workers — including many African Americans, Irishmen and Italians – operated 41 local brickyards. Large banks of clay, ideal for brickmaking, were uncovered in the Hudson Valley as early as 1630. Brickmaking plants fostered the growth of entire communities in the area. Between the Great Depression, the two World Wars, and the availability of other economical building materials, the industry went downhill, until the last Haverstraw brickyard closed down in 1941. (Some plants in the general Hudson Valley region continued to function until much more recently — into the early 21st century.) Today China is the king of bricks. Spain comes in second, followed by India and France. 116

The Boro Park View

In Full Color The shade of a brick is influenced by the chemical and mineral content of its raw materials. For example, the more iron oxide, the redder the brick will be. More lime will color a brick more yellow or white.

Trending… Recent surveys indicate that whites, tans and grays are among the top residential color choices, primarily influenced by young homebuyers’ preferences.

Brownstones Brooklyn is famous for its “brownstones.” These townhouses were built with brown sandstone, hence their unique moniker. During the 1880s, when New York City was growing exponentially, brownstone was plentiful and inexpensive.

By: T. Gestetner

Building Your Brick Home Draped in White There’s something strikingly unique about architecture in Yerushalayim: Everything is built from the same “royal stone,” with white, beige and pinkish hues. The sedimentary limestone, dolomite and dolomitic limestone making up this variety are found beneath the mountains of Yerushalayim. It’s actually a law that every exterior must be covered with Yerushalayim stone, lending an aristocratic feel to the city. Because of the nostalgic connection to Yerushalayim, many shuls and Torah institutions in chutz la’aretz incorporate Yerushalayim stone in their design.

Record Bricks LARGEST: Measuring 9 feet 8 inches long and 3 feet 3 inches tall, the largest clay brick was unveiled by ACME Brick in Denton, Texas, on July 4, 2007.

BENEFITS Financial Value A stone home has a 6% average greater resale value than structures of other materials. Insurance costs are typically lower, too! Less Insulation Bricks work as a natural insulator. As the seasons change, a brick house retains its temperature longer. This means it takes the summer sun a longer time to naturally warm up a brick home, and as the winter sets in, the house won’t instantly turn cold. This is because masonry is slow to absorb or lose heat. That’s why some contractors say brick buildings require less insulation than other building methods. Long-Lasting Bricks have withstood the test of time and weather; there are brick buildings that have been around for hundreds of years. That’s because bricks are resistant to mold, and they don’t decay or rot.

DISADVANTAGES Time-Consuming and Costly Brick homes are built slowly, one brick at a time. Construction takes a long time, a fact that is often reflected in the higher building costs. Foundation Woes A brick house is sensitive to any shift in the foundation. It isn’t recommended to build with brick in an area commonly shaken by seismic movement.

Random Snippets • The standard brick size in the U.S. is 2.5 x 3.75 x 8 inches. • More than 70% of buildings worldwide are built of masonry.

QUICKEST: 872 bricks were laid in 60 minutes by bricklayer Gary Lovegrove of Wisbech, England, on July 18, 1995. MOST: China exports 37.2 million dollars worth of bricks per year.

• In London, buildings were made of wood until the Great Fire of 1666, when the city was rebuilt using brick. • Brick homes declined in popularity between the 1970s and 2010. From 421,000 new brick houses built in 1973, only 113,000 were built in 2010. In 2021, however, there seems to be a comeback in style.
