THE SEFER SHE SEEKS
(Re: Becoming Better Together, Issue 93) I was reading this past week’s issue of The Boro Park View and saw an article featuring people who are learning various seforim and how their learning has helped them. Tova Hurwitz wrote that she learns Do You Know Hilchos Shabbos? with her family. She also wrote that she is looking for a good sefer on hilchos brachos. I’d like to let her know that there is a sefer by the same author as the one she is currently learning titled Do You Know Hilchos Brachos? The format is the same, and the cover looks very similar. This information might benefit her. Thank you! A Reader
A MEANINGFUL READ
(Re: Issue 93) Your Tisha B’Av issue was so meaningful, and I found it to be such appropriate reading material for the taanis. The tone was just right and inspired me during a time where we especially yearn for the Geulah. Thank you for helping me access the mood and meaning of this time. T.C.

(Re: Recipe Section) I love your magazine. Looking through your pages is a tantalizing treat every week, and I especially enjoy reading your short informative articles. The reason I’m writing to you now, however, is to express my gratitude to the master cooks who provide the recipes for your food section. I’ve been married 25 years, so I’m no newcomer to cooking and baking. Come the Three Weeks leading up to Tisha B’Av, I spend a large part of my days in the kitchen. When it comes to magazine recipes, my train of thought generally is that if it’s that good, it will probably end up in a cookbook (and many times it does), and I have time to try it when it does.

YOUR VOICE PAYING YOUR PROVIDER
Thank you for a lovely publication. I really appreciate the forum you provide for sharing ideas and thoughts within our community and would like to take this opportunity to bring attention to an issue, or rather, oversight. I work in a busy walk-in medical center here in Brooklyn, and thus I’ve been privy to a very bothersome situation. The frame of mind people have adopted is that doctors’ visits are essentially free, since insurance pays for them. While it is true that those of you without copays do not pay for the visits, the reality is that it’s still your responsibility to make sure the doctor gets paid. That includes checking that your insurance is active at the time of the visit, and if you switched insurances since your last visit, updating the intake receptionist

with that information. While no conscientious person would consider walking out of a grocery store with a bag of food without paying, people don’t realize that if the doctor doesn’t get paid for the visit due to your negligence, it is just like any other form of geneivah. Our office is very fast-paced, and thus we don’t always have the time to check the insurance information on the spot (for your benefit, so as not to keep up the waiting patients), and we end up with countless patients whom, in the best-case scenario, we need to chase after to get active insurance information. (In the worst-case scenario, we never see payment for services rendered.) Furthermore, it is troubling when patients do not take our calls or make us run after them. I totally understand why someone who is not in this line doesn’t give much thought to the repercussions of their actions. That’s why I decided to raise awareness on the matter. It really doesn’t take much to make sure that you have the info the doctor needs before you walk into a medical center so your providers can get paid what they honestly deserve. A.R. PARSHAS VA’ESCHANAN With All Your Means
Surprisingly, the envelope was there — and it was still nice In Parshas Va’eschanan, the timeless words of Krias and full! It was like finding a snowball in a desert. Shema are found: “And you shall love Hashem with How could it be? The burglar took all the equipment, all all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your the cash — but he hadn’t seen means” (Devarim 6:5). this? Gavriel was astounded, and truly delighted. Amazing! The Gemara offers an explanation on the words he thought. The Father of the poor had taken care of His sons. He had “u’vechol me’odecha” (and with all your means), stating made sure that their funds weren’t that we should thank Hashem for every middah with stolen. It was nothing short of miraculous, and Gavriel’s which He conducts Himself with us (Brachos 54a). heart burst out in song: Hodu L’Hashem ki tov! When Hashem sends challenges our way, how can we Over the next few days, muster the gratitude to thank and praise Him? Gavriel told everyone about the robbery and about the miracle — in shul, at home and even at the barber shop. Every cusIT MADE THE MORNING HEADLINES. Someone had bro- tomer who entered heard it all over again. “Yes, my place was ken into Gavriel’s barber shop! Smack in the middle of town, robbed. Yes, I lost loads of money. But can you imagine? With on Rechov Ezra in Bnei Brak, the burglar had done his job well: my own eyes, I saw this miracle! The thief took everything — The tools and equipment were gone, the cash register had been besides the tzedakah money!” Many people were surprised at Gavriel’s reaction. A robbery completely emptied of its contents, and there was nothing of leaves your typical man feeling helpless and vulnerable after value left in the entire shop. Gavriel surveyed the scene. His place, so comfortably set up, the initial panic, shock and guilt wear off. But Gavriel was in had been completely ransacked. The thief had had his hand in a trance. He was so exuberant about the miracle he experievery single corner of the shop. It was frightening. Who knows enced that as he set about refurnishing his shop, he thanked how much it will cost to get this place back in shape? Gavriel wondered. A short while later, an unfamiliar man approached Gavriel. over to the counter and yanked open the third drawer. This robbery had been pulled off so thoroughly, Gavriel couldn’t “Here,” he said as he shoved an envelope into Gavriel’s hand. “I owe you this money.” imagine the burglar had missed this drawer. “What for? Do I know you?” Inside this drawer, Gavriel had stashed an envelope with a “Oh, we’ve met before. I’ve been to your barber shop twice — couple thousand dollars cash. “It isn’t even my money!” Gavriel muttered to no one in particular as he anxiously rummaged once when you were there, and once in the dark of night… I’m through the drawer. He’d collected the cash for a poverty- the one who broke in.” “Wait a minute!” Gavriel nearly shouted. “But why are you stricken family, and he was planning to hand it over to them. But deep down, Gavriel knew there wasn’t much of a chance returning the money? What happened all of a sudden?” “It didn’t happen overnight,” the fellow replied. “I went he’d find the envelope intact.

through some hard times, and over the last few months, I became a shoplifter. Among other shops, I raided yours. And few days later, I stopped by your shop to see how you were faring. I sat in your chair and asked for a cut. “As I was sitting there, I heard you tell your story. And I couldn’t believe my ears! Most burglary victims are bitter. They’re angry at the burglars, angry at the police. But you — you were so calm! You only saw the positive aspect and even called it a miracle that I left over that tzedakah envelope… “I was so taken by your attitude. It touched a deep place inside of me. I decided that come what may, I would never steal again. I want to become a ba’al teshuvah! I don’t want to steal; I’d rather be part of a people who see the good in everything that happens and recognize Who is leading them all the time.” The man handed over the envelope. “Here, take this money.” Gavriel was stunned. His response to the robbery hadn’t been feigned; rather, it came from an authentic will to recognize the hashgacha in the story. And here it had inspired this distanced Jew to return! “Take the money and let’s prepare a seudah, thanking Hashem for bringing you back to Yiddishkeit!” Gavriel exclaimed. Just a few words of true hoda’ah were the key that penetrated a heart of stone. They brought back his money and brought back a Yid to the fold. * * * * * Life is full of challenges. Yet in every dark moment, there is light. If we look for it and focus on that fine ray of sunshine, we can cause the light to spread and illuminate the entire picture. In every difficulty we can find chasadim for which we can thank Hashem. Noticing the good rather than grumbling over the difficulties inevitably makes the challenges grow smaller. Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach suggested keeping a little notebook to record the positive moments we experience. It opens our eyes to recognize and thank Hashem for all He does for us. Utilizing every hardship as an opportunity to thank Hashem transforms us. “And it is certain that by doing so,” Rav Shlomo Zalman said, “one will find that life is a lot calmer, all worries disappear, and tension dissipates into pleasant calmness.”
Did You Know? We place our right hand over our eyes to increase our kavanah and remove all distraction while saying Shema. Placing our hand over our eyes also implies that much like a blind person is likened to the dead, we are prepared to sacrifice our lives al Kiddush Hashem. – Reb Menachem Mendel of Kossov

CHAPTER 17 RECAP: Shabbesai Tzvi settles in Yerushalayim, where he enjoys none of the reverence he received in the past. In a letter, Gamliel summons Yechiel to Yerushalayim. After a visit to Kever Rochel, they arrive at the Jewish Quarter to see chaos reign. A man begs Shabbesai Tzvi to save them.
“R
ise, my child,” said Shabbesai Tzvi gently. “Tell me what has happened.” “May all the plagues of Egypt strike the evil Turkish qadi who rules over the holy city of Yerushalayim like a tyrant. He has levied a tax on all the Jews of Yerushalayim. If we cannot pay the tax, we will lose our homes and be forced to leave the city.” An excited babble rose up once again in the street as the bystanders vied with one another to add details and comments to the small man’s account. Shabbesai Tzvi lifted his arms, and a semblance of order returned. “What is being done?” asked Shabbesai Tzvi. “What can be done?” was the small man’s plaintive response. “A delegation of rabbis immediately rushed to the residence of the qadi to plead for mercy, but he merely laughed in their faces. The money, all of it, must be paid before the new moon appears in the sky. The situation is hopeless. Oh, please, holy one, use your wonderful powers to save us from this catastrophe.” A thin smile appeared at the corners

of Shabbesai Tzvi’s mouth. Perhaps this was the sign from Heaven he had been awaiting. “Don’t be frightened, my precious children,” he called out. “I will not abandon you in your hour of distress.” The tension in the street began to dissipate. From every corner of the street and the balconies above, blessings and gratitude rained down on Shabbesai Tzvi, but he was already on his way to the residence of the qadi. Gamliel and Yechiel waited outside as Shabbesai Tzvi entered on his own. A short while later, he emerged, a look of satisfaction on his face. The qadi had refused to lower the amount of the tax, but he had agreed to extend the time in which it was to be paid. Shabbesai Tzvi did not seem concerned. “The sign for which I have been waiting has finally come,” he said. “Go tell your families to prepare for your departure. Tomorrow, I journey to Cairo, and I want you both to come with me.” Early the next morning, they joined a caravan headed for the Mediterranean coast. It took them the better part of the day to reach the ancient port of Yaffo. The following day, they sailed for
Egypt. The unexpected arrival of Shabbesai Tzvi and his companions filled the House of Chelebi with joy and excitement. Refael Yosef Chelebi abruptly cut short an important meeting with the harbormaster of Alexandria, sending the bewildered official away as soon as he received word of Shabbesai Tzvi’s presence in his home. He immediately ordered that his own private quarters be prepared for the personal use of Shabbesai Tzvi, as they had been during his stay the previous year. Shabbesai Tzvi did not give any reasons for his visit, nor did Refael Yosef Chelebi inquire. The next day was Friday, and once again Shabbesai Tzvi chose not to reveal the purpose of his visit. Word of his mysterious arrival spread quickly to every corner of the Jewish quarter. Rumors were exchanged in the crowded marketplaces as fish and meat were purchased for Shabbos. Many faces unfamiliar to Yechiel graced Refael Yosef Chelebi’s table that Shabbos, and after the meal, many more came to hear the words of Shabbesai Tzvi. The crowd spilled over from the great dining hall into the main gallery. Shabbesai Tzvi sat in his green armchair at the head of the table, basking in the adoration of the people, something denied to him by the city of Yerushalayim for a full year. The happiness in his heart infused the songs he sang and the words he spoke with a magical aura that tingled the spines of the listeners.
After Shabbos, while Shabbesai Tzvi and Refael Yosef Chelebi sat in the garden, one of the house guests approached. He remained standing respectfully at a distance, waiting patiently to be acknowledged. Refael Yosef looked at Shabbesai Tzvi. Shabbesai Tzvi nodded his head, and Refael Yosef signaled the man to come forward. “May I introduce my honored guest Diego Vargas of Amsterdam?” asked Refael Yosef. Shabbesai Tzvi extended his hand, and Vargas brought it to his lips. “This is the most memorable day of my life,” he said. “I’ll tell my grandchildren about it.” “May the Almighty grant you long life and many, many grandchildren, my child. Tell me about Amsterdam. How is it for our people in Amsterdam?” “Fairly good,” said Vargas. “The Dutch let us live as free men, which is more than can be said for most other places in Europe.” “What troubles you, my child?” “I’m a Marrano,” said Vargas, “and I’m doomed to suffer the fate of the Marranos. I was born in Porto, Portugal. My parents sent me to a Catholic school. I had no idea I was Jewish. Even during the height of the new wave of persecution and burnings at the stake twenty years ago, I still believed Jews to be heretics. Not until I was nineteen years old did my parents tell me who I really was. A short while later, our family left Portugal for Amsterdam. It had become too dangerous to stay. “What did we know about being Jewish? We knew nothing of halacha, only the little bit expressly spelled out in the Chumash, and even that we had difficulty reading because of our limited Hebrew. But we were proud Jews, happy to risk our lives for what we believed. Imagine what a shock it was to come to Amsterdam and discover how far we were from being truly Jewish. “It was difficult, to say the least. Some of us were able to make the adjustment, but others were unable to deal with the new reality. I shudder to say it, but many have converted to the Christianity they knew as children before they even knew they were Jewish. Most of us, however, are somewhere in the middle, living in that special brand of exile reserved for Marranos. We suffered the torture of the Inquisitors for the sake of an ideal, only to discover the ideal very different from what we had imagined, that it meant living a life we do not understand. People look down at those of us who know nothing of the Torah. We’ve gone from one form of torture to another.” Shabbesai Tzvi’s eyes glistened with tears as he listened to Diego Vargas. “I’m not unfamiliar with the pain of the Marranos, Diego,” he said. “I’ve lived among the Marranos in Salonika, and I know every word you’ve spoken is true. But do not despair, my child. There is hope. A day will arrive when this exile will end, and we will all go together to Eretz Yisroel as equals. You will no longer be Marranos. Only brothers.” Diego Vargas’ face lit up as he listened to Shabbesai Tzvi. “How long need we wait?” he asked. “Have hope. It might come in your lifetime, Diego. Do you believe that?” “Yes, I do. People say there are many signs that Moshiach will come very soon. Something recently happened in Amsterdam that also made us think so.” “Tell me about it,” said Shabbesai Tzvi. Diego Vargas took a deep breath and began. “The story begins about twenty

years ago, in the summer of 1644. A young girl named Sarah, only two and a half years old, disappeared from her parents’ home in Braklav, a village in the Ukraine. Her father, a learned man named Rav Meir, searched tirelessly for his daughter who’d vanished, but she was nowhere to be found. Weeks turned into months and months into a year before they discovered that Sarah was in a convent where orphaned girls were trained to be nuns. They tried everything in their power to gain her release but with no success. Her parents were heartbroken. Her father died shortly afterward. “When Bogdan Chmielnicki and the Cossacks of the Ukraine revolted against their Polish overlords, Sarah was seven years old. Her only memories were of life in the convent. All memories of her family and her Jewishness had faded completely from her tender mind. The Cossacks thundered over Braklav in the early spring of 1648, destroying everything in their path. Sarah’s mother and brothers were murdered, their house burned to the ground. “One night, Sarah awoke to see a man standing in her room in the convent. The window behind him was wide open. She did not recognize the man, but he looked vaguely familiar. He lifted her in his arms and carried her to the window. Then with one mighty spring of his legs, the man and the child were flying through the air high above the roof of the convent. I know this is a little difficult to believe, but this is what I was told.” “It is not that hard to believe, Diego,” said Shabbesai Tzvi. “It can be done quite easily, if only one knows what to do. Continue.” “The man and the child flew through the air until they came to the Jewish cemetery behind Braklav. The man placed the frightened girl gently on the ground. His eyes shone with kindness. “‘Listen carefully, my daughter,’ he said. ‘You are a Jewish child, and I am your father. You are Sarah the daughter of Meir. Always remember that. You will be perfectly safe here tonight, Sarah. Tomorrow, Jewish people will come here to bury their dead. Go with them. Do you understand?’ “Unable to speak, the girl nodded her head. The man bent down and kissed her on the forehead. Then, he vanished into the air. “The little girl remained huddled in the cemetery for the remainder of the night. In the morning, a group of Jewish people came to bury a man who perished during the night of his wounds. They were astounded to find the little girl there. Sarah spoke only Polish, but the people believed her story. They had known Rav Meir and remembered the disappearance of his daughter. Besides, her description of the man who had brought her there fit Rav Meir perfectly, and Rav Meir had died some three years earlier. They took her back and hid her in one of the few houses still standing in Braklav.

“Since the little girl spoke only Polish, it was too dangerous for them to keep her in Braklav; they might be accused of abducting and hiding a gentile child. Instead, Sarah was spirited out of Poland by a family fleeing to the west. Sarah wandered from place to place across Europe until she finally reached Amsterdam. She was taken into the home of one of the generous families of Amsterdam and settled into a semblance of a normal life. At sixteen, she began receiving proposals of marriage. “One night, she dreamed she was in a large chamber beside a noble young man. They were seated at a table set with the most exquisite food and the finest wines. Liveried servants waited at attention against the gaily painted walls. The people sitting around the table drank from their cups; then they lifted the cups into the air. “‘Long live our Master!’ they shouted. ‘And long live his wife who sits at his right side!’ “Just then, the door opened, and two dusty travelers came in. They stood before the young man and bowed down. “‘The Jewish communities of Poland,’ they said, ‘have sent us as delegates to you, Moshiach ben Dovid.’ “As soon as she heard these words, Sarah awoke from her dream. For a long time, the unusual dream occupied her thoughts from morning to night. One day, she happened to be in the house of the chief rabbi of Amsterdam when he was visited by two emissaries from Yerushalayim who had come to raise money in Amsterdam. “The door to the rabbi’s room was open, and Sarah could hear what was being said. She was beginning to lose interest in

the conversation when the men offered to tell the rabbi something that was not yet common knowledge. There are rumors that a man with extraordinary powers has appeared in Turkey, they confided, and he is secretly revealing himself to his close followers as Moshiach. “The words of the men from Yerushalayim made a profound impression on Sarah. She became convinced she had been shown the meaning of her dream. From that day forward, she refused to hear of any proposals of marriage, claiming she was destined to be the bride of Moshiach. Although some of us were impressed by her story and her dream, many others thought her mind had become unhinged by her harrowing experiences in Poland. Children laughed at Mad Sarah, as she came to be called and ran after her in the street. It was too much for her, and when a childless family in Livorno, Italy, offered to adopt her, she eagerly accepted. Sarah continues to refuse all proposals of marriage as she waits to become the bride of Moshiach.”
From that day forward, Sarah refused to hear of any proposals of marriage, claiming she was destined to be the bride of Moshiach.

Thank You for Helping Us Honor Our Doctors! This past year has been a challenging one for everyone, especially for healthcare workers who stood at the frontlines during these turbulent times. At King David Center, we saw firsthand the outstanding dedication of many doctors, who went above and beyond the call of duty to help their patients during this difficult period. Many took care of their patients with true devotion, even if it meant putting themselves at risk by being exposed to the virus. Wanting to celebrate our healthcare heroes, we printed ads and used social media to invite members of the Brooklyn community to nominate their doctors for recognition. We asked people to submit letters expressing their appreciation for all that their physicians had done for them or for a special senior in their life. In response, we would honor these physicians and present them with a gift from King David Center on behalf of the community. The letters that we received in response to our ads were truly heartwarming. One person wrote about a doctor who became critically ill himself but he returned to care for his patients as soon as he was able to do so. Another wrote about a doctor who visited the hospital each day so that he could update the family on the patient’s condition. When this doctor called Motzei Pesach with an update, the family expressed their surprise and gratitude. “What do you think?” the doctor said in response. “My Seder wasn’t a Seder, just like yours wasn’t. My patients are on my mind the entire time!” One letter-writer wrote about a doctor who kept checking up on a preemie baby, whose mother had tragically passed away. With love and devotion, this doctor kept visiting the NICU so that she could personally see how the baby was doing. Another person wrote how devoted their doctor had been to their elderly mother after she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He explained every procedure and option with compassion and patience. When a particular sheila came up regarding the patient’s care, the woman asked her mother’s doctor, “What would you do if this were your mother?” Without missing a beat, the doctor replied, “I am treating her as if she is
my mother!” Despite some early concerns that perhaps this campaign was overly optimistic, considering how few people write letters today, the community’s response made it clear that so many people do recognize and appreciate their doctor’s devotion. Once all the letters had been received, we created beautiful gift packages for each doctor and included the letters that their patients had sent. We then dedicated several days to delivering the packages to these doctors’ offices at a prearranged time. As expected, many doctors were overwhelmed when they were presented with their gift packages from King David Center in recognition of their work. One doctor immediately teared up, “I have no words,” he said. Another doctor admitted how physically and emotionally draining the last year had been. “I really started feeling that maybe I just can’t do this anymore,” the doctor shared. “You have just rejuvenated me! Typically, patients only share their complaints and it’s so meaningful to see that people do recognize and appreciate our work.” We know what it means to provide outstanding care and to keep striving to elevate our care to the next level. At King David Center, we know firsthand how hard it was to do so during these challenging times and the superhuman efforts that were involved. As such, we believed it would be an honor and privilege to represent the community in recognizing and honoring the dedicated work of outstanding physicians. The delight and surprise of the doctors, and their admission of how nice it felt to be appreciated, underscored the importance of our campaign. We want to thank all those who submitted letters of appreciation to their doctors, thereby allowing us to recognize their outstanding work. We are committed to providing continued outstanding care to all our patients, and we hope to continue playing a role in promoting the interests of the community as we continue working together towards outstanding healthcare for everyone.

Health Risks Have Manufacturer Recalling 2 Million Sleep Apnea Machines They may be intended to help patients improve the quality of their sleep, but users of Phillips CPAP, BiLevel PAP and mechanical devices are feeling anything but relaxed after 2 million of the devices were recalled because of potentially serious health issues. Phillips issued a recall on the devices, most of which are part of its first-generation DreamStation family, in response to reports of users finding small black particles in the masks they wore to help them manage their sleep apnea. The particles have flaked off the foam used to limit the machine’s noise and may cause serious consequences including asthma, kidney and liver damage, and cancer. The Boston Globe reported that Phillips had received what they described as “a limited” number of complaints from users who were plagued by headaches, upper airway irritation, coughing, chest pressure and sinus infection. The company said that its own quality management teams discovered that the foam was degrading over time. Phillips advised users of its CPAP and BiLevel PAP devices not to resume using the machines unless directed to do so by their doctors. Those using affected life-sustaining mechanical ventilators were urged to consult with their doctors before discontinuing their use. Multiple lawsuits have already been filed in regard to the recalls, with plaintiffs saying that Phillips did not tell the public about the serious dangers posed by the machines as soon as they were discovered. Several Boston lawyers have already requested that the complaints be consolidated into a single classaction suit that would include anyone who has been using the affected devices. With approximately 2 million devices affected by the recall, Phillips could potentially be facing damages totaling billions of dollars.
Democratic Lawmakers Call on Cuomo to End Restrictive Nursing Home Regulations Weeks after the state eased nursing home visitation restrictions, elected officials are urging Governor Andrew Cuomo to step in and advocate for those who are still facing extremely limited time with their loved ones. The Associated Press reported that some nursing homes are still allowing visits only once or twice a week, which can be as short as 30 minutes. Those realities prompted 24 Democratic lawmakers to send a letter to the governor on July 12 to ensure

that additional visitation opportunities would be created in facilities where the risk of COVID-19 transmission is low. “In the year before vaccinations became available, our seniors endured loneliness and isolation that had very real impacts on their physical and mental health,” read the letter. “While the majority of New Yorkers have had the opportunity to resume a life of pre-COVID-19 activity, seniors in many nursing homes have been excluded.” Even with New York’s state of emergency finally lifted, lawmakers said that they have been receiving many complaints from constituents who have been finding it difficult to gain permission to see their loved ones. Chrstina McComish, who lives approximately 130 miles north of New York City in Valatie, said it can take her days to schedule a single visit with her 88-year-old mother who suffers from dementia, isolation and hearing loss. According to McComish, visits at her mother’s facility are limited to those in end-of-life scenarios, leaving the two with 30-minute long visits while they are seated at opposite ends of a dining table. “She’s vaccinated, I’m vaccinated,” said McComish. “She’s just going to die in there. She’s just going to die alone.”
Days After Disturbing Theft, SevenYear-Old Gets Birthday Surprise It was a birthday to remember for Simcha Rothenberg, who had his faith in humanity at least somewhat restored just days after being the victim of an unsettling robbery. Simcha had been riding his older brother’s electric scooter on 12th Avenue near 36th Street when an unidentified man grabbed the handlebars, dislodging the boy from the scooter, which he then stole. The theft took place on July 7 near Simcha’s home, and his older sister who was watching him at the time said that the incident took place so quickly that she didn’t even see it happen. Simcha was so disturbed by the robbery that he ran a fever for the next two days. Both the NYPD and Boro Park Shomrim responded to the scene, and hoping to soften the blow, more than 30 individuals offered to replace the scooter. That honor went to a group that included the 66th Precinct, NYPD Community Affairs Inspector Richie Taylor, Yanky Meyer of Misaskim, Yonasan Schwartz, owner of Toys 2 Discover, and a family friend from Dunn Co. Safety, which presented Simcha with a new scooter on his seventh birthday. “They are nice people to have me in mind,” Simcha told his father, Pinny Rothenberg. Asked if he had any advice to share with parents, Pinny Rothenberg replied, “Everyone should always keep an eye on the kids. The neighborhood is not always so safe.” Boro Park Shomrim released surveillance footage of the

Those seemingly disposable goldfish that find their way home as carnival prizes are apparently much hardier than they look, with Minnesota officials finding football-sized specimens creating havoc on the delicate ecosystems of their local waters. The New York Times reported that residents of Burnsville and Apple Valley, both located south of Minneapolis, began complaining about an infestation of massive goldfish, believed to have been dumped in local waters by area residents. Left undisturbed, the goldfish grew significantly, and last year alone an estimated 30,000 to 50,000 goldfish of all sizes were removed from area waters. Goldfish can live for as long as 25 years and can endure for months without oxygen, giving them the ability to survive in waters that freeze over during the winter. Given their resilience, goldfish can grow to a weight of four pounds and measure as long as twelve inches. As bottom feeders, goldfish tend to uproot plants and stir up sediment, damaging the water’s quality and harming other species. Having been flabbergasted by the giant fish he has seen pulled out of local lakes which bear little resemblance to their pet store counterparts, Burnsville natural resources specialist Caleb Ashling warned those who tire of their pets not to release them into the area’s waters. “People are trying to be nice but they don’t realize that goldfish can really have a lot of unintended consequences,” said Ashling. “Most people really care about their lakes and ponds, but you may be causing problems you weren’t aware of if you let them go there.”

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN RECAP: Despite
her mother’s uneasiness, Ariella prepares to leave for Acco. Her family gives her a camera as a present. Another developer tries to convince Reb Elazar to sell his house. The man is aggressive and argumentative and leaves a very unpleasant feeling among all of the boys who overheard the conversation.
S
arah put down her bag, yawning after a long day’s work. All she wanted now was a piece of chocolate and a listening ear. She found the chocolate easily; the listening ear, though, wasn’t as readily available. To be sure, the ear was there, but the monotonous and unfocused responses coming from her husband proved that he wasn’t really there. “Elazar,” she said after a few minutes of talking, “you look tired. Maybe just bentch and go to sleep?” “I didn’t wash,” he said distractedly. “I just ate a bit of salad left from Shabbos.” “That’s not enough. How exactly is that going to fill you up?” “It’s fine, I’m not hungry.” Sarah looked at the table. “I can cut up some fresh vegetables for you,” she offered. “No, no, thanks.” “A cup of coffee?” “No. As it is, I don’t think I’ll be able to fall asleep.” She leaned onto her folded arms. “What happened?” “I’m afraid they’ve figured it out.” He raised his eyes. “The pressure to buy this place from us has intensified recently, and it makes no sense. We’ve been here for more than two years already. What happened suddenly?” “Nu, what?” “They must have figured it out.” He poked at the mushrooms on his plate. “That’s the answer.” “Who came by today?”

“Another one. Says he’s an agent. They want to build some type of new apartment complex facing the sea. All the homeowners on our side of the street have already given them the okay, he says.” “And he was angry when you refused?” “Yes, very.” Elazar looked out of the window. “And last time it was a hotel, and before that… I don’t even remember. And that’s besides for the regular visits from the Arab on Fridays, and about two phone calls a week.” Sarah nodded. She also got some calls. “And something seems suspicious to you.” “Maybe it’s all true.” He sounded unsure. “Maybe this area has suddenly become attractive to developers. After all, there’s a port and a beach…” “For some reason,” Sarah said, “this area doesn’t strike me as ideal for luxury developments. But maybe check at the municipality. If someone’s dreaming of building a hotel, or some other high-rise building, there should be approvals and permits somewhere, right?” “You might be on to something.” Elazar sighed. He suddenly looked old and tired. “Most of the boys are going home this Shabbos. I wonder what’ll happen tomorrow if the Arab comes to nudge me again and we won’t be here.” “What do you think will happen?” “With him? I have no idea. But I’ll be able to breathe a little more easily.” “So… do you want to go away for Shabbos?” She was so tired herself that it took time for her to grasp what he was saying.
“I’m not sure. What’ll be with Osher? He’s not going anywhere.” “We’ll take him along. Who else is staying?” “Shlomo.” “So we’ll take him along, too.” “But where will we go?” Reb Elazar asked. “To Bassi,” Sarah replied. “She’s invited me a hundred times already. In honor of the hundred and first time, we’ll accept her invitation.” * * * * * Ariella found herself swept along with the stream of people emerging from the train into the sooty station. Queasy and tired, she was rather dazed from her marathon of a day — but she was already very close to her destination, and that alone made her feel much better. After all, she was finally in Acco. Now she needed to get to the Abramov home where she was renting a room, and she had to start thinking about how to find Osher without him finding her. Where was the note with the bus information she needed? Ariella found the note in her wallet. She made sure her beige pocketbook was strapped over her shoulder, along with her small matching duffel bag, and she walked out of the station. The bus stop on David Remez Street was empty, aside from an elderly Arab man sitting on the bench, deeply asleep. She stood a distance from him and peered down the street. The sidewalk was empty too, she noticed. When did people

go to sleep in Acco? At seven in the evening? Judging by the Number 2 bus that pulled up at that moment, though, that did not seem to be the case. The bus was filled with overwhelmingly loud, brash Arabic, and Ariella wasn’t sure where to sit. Suddenly, she discovered a young frum woman, head covered in a dark kerchief, sitting close to the back of the bus. The seat beside her was empty, and Ariella hurried toward it. “Hello,” she said to the woman. “Hi,” the woman replied pleasantly. “Can you tell me where Moshe Sharett Street is? I need to get off there. I was told —” she glanced at the clear pocket in her wallet “— that it’s about a ten-minute ride, but I’m afraid I won’t know when to get off.” “Perfect. I’m getting off there as well,” the woman noted. “I’m a teacher at the Birchas Yisroel school, and we have PTA tonight. Wait, you aren’t the mother of a student, right? You don’t look familiar.” “No.” Ariella felt a bit foolish. “I’m… I’m supposed to be staying with someone who lives on that street.” She spent the next seven minutes of the ride in silence, staring out the window. If Nosson would have lived, could she have been the mother of an elementary-age student already? No, her oldest child would have been at most four or five at this point. Apparently, the Abramov family didn’t have daughters attending Birchas Yisroel school either, because the mother would have been at PTA now instead of waiting for her strange guest to arrive. Or perhaps she wasn’t home, and had left Ariella a note and a key at a neighbor? Ariella furrowed her eyebrows. No, she had no desire to meet a locked door with a note and a key. But there was no note on the Abramov door. Mrs. Abramov herself — a surprisingly young and pleasant woman — welcomed her in. The house was dark and quiet, and the only light on was in the kitchen.

There were piles of vegetable peels on the counter, and the aroma of soup filled the house. “Daughters in school here? Oh, no, my oldest is two,” she said with a laugh. “I’m only twenty-five.” “I’m about the same age, almost twenty-five,” Ariella said. “Nice to meet you.” “It’s nice to meet you too! Can I offer you a drink?” Ariella didn’t really want one, but she felt it would be impolite to refuse.
grasped the handle of Ariella’s duffel bag. “Come, I’ll show you to your room.” She led her to the stairwell, and there, right near the front door of the apartment, was another door, this one without a nameplate. “It was originally part of our apartment,” Miriam said as she opened the door. “We separated it when I was working as a graphic artist, and my husband’s rav said it would be better for us not to have a computer in the house.” She walked in, and Ariella followed.
“Last time it was a hotel, and before that… I don’t even remember. And that’s besides for the regular visits from the Arab on Fridays, and about two phone calls a week.” Somehow, her hostess’s eyes were radiating a call for friendship. “Yes, thanks,” she said with a smile. “But I don’t want to disturb your preparations for Shabbos. I know Thursday night is not exactly the ideal time to host.” “It’s perfectly fine! Which train did you take?” “I don’t know. I planned to leave the house at seven this morning, and somehow, it became four in the afternoon…” She laughed and reached for the bottle of cold water her hostess had taken out for her. “I missed one train by a few minutes, and it took more than half an hour for the next train to come. It was that kind of day.” “But once you were on the train, was the rest of the trip smooth?” Mrs. Abramov brought out a packaged cake and took a knife to slice it, but Ariella motioned for her to stop. “No, thanks, Mrs. Abramov. I’m really not hungry.” “I’m not ‘Mrs.’! My name is Miriam.” Her hand paused. She slid the knife into the package of the cake and handed them both to Ariella. She then
There was a low bed near the wall, a small table, a chair, and a covered computer near the window. “Don’t you need the space now?” Ariella asked. “Nah, it didn’t go so well with the graphics, so I don’t really need a workroom anymore,” Miriam said. She turned her back on Ariella to pull open the curtain. “This room is empty most days.” Ariella had the feeling that she shouldn’t probe any deeper into Miriam’s work; it sounded like a sensitive topic. She quickly changed the subject. “Do you know a family by the name of Reiness?” “Reiness? No, I don’t,” Miriam said. “I can try to find out about them, though. Are they listed in the phone book?” “They’re listed in Haifa, but they moved here recently. Their phone number is the same, though.” “So call them up and ask for an exact address.” Miriam put an electric kettle on the table along with a package of hot cups. “No, I can’t do that. told you over the phone, I came here for something specific, something familyrelated, and… it’s a bit sensitive. It needs to be dealt with cautiously.” “I respect that,” Miriam said, a trace of a smile in her eyes. “So like I said, I can ask people I know if any of them are familiar with a Reiness family here in the city.” “Thank you, that would be a big help,” Ariella said. “Tell them that Mrs. Reiness is a speech therapist. Maybe that will help jog someone’s memory.” “Do you know which healthcare system she works for?” Ariella tried to remember. “I don’t know. I’m not even sure she belongs to a specific healthcare system; she might be working privately.” “I’ll check that out for you. In the meantime, do you need anything else? Another blanket, or —” “No, everything looks great.” Ariella looked at the thick, fluffy quilt on the bed. “Really, Miriam, you set me up beautifully here. Thanks so much.” “I’m happy to hear that. Okay, so have a good night, and if you need anything, feel free to knock or call me over the phone. And enjoy the cake!” Ariella waited a minute until she heard the other door close. Then she locked her own door and walked over to the window. She imagined that the view from this first-floor window would not be very expansive or impressive, but she was very disappointed to see that it was even less than that: A pair of large, overflowing trash cans and a thorny bush were all she could make out through the bars on the window. The entrance to the building was so well-tended and aesthetic; it was a shame that all she could see from this side window was the back part of the building. She sat down on the wooden chair and opened the package of cake. The Abramovs’ fee did not include meals, except for Shabbos seudos, so she’d brought along food and a small electric burner from home. But it wouldn’t be very comfortable to cook here when all she had was a small sink and a tiny piece of countertop adjacent to it. Not that she was such a major cook, but she couldn’t imagine preparing even the most basic meals here. As she was finishing her second slice
of cake, her mother called. “Hi, Mommy,” Ariella said. “I’m sorry I didn’t call you after I got off the train.” “It’s all right. I imagine it took some time to get there and then settle yourself in. Are you at the Abramovs’ yet?” “Yes, I’m here in my room.” “Nu? You don’t sound very excited. Is the bed uncomfortable or something?” “No, not at all. Baruch Hashem, I’m very happy with the arrangements,” Ariella said slowly. “Mrs. Abramov is very sweet, the area seems fine and not at all scary, and the building is new and clean. Oh, and the room here is actually quite comfortable and pretty.” “Do you have a good view from the window? The girls said they want gorgeous pictures!” “That’s a bit less… you know, it’s the first floor and all that. But it’s fine. I have to go out anyway. Tell the girls that I’m sure the camera will come to very good use, and I’ll have beautiful things to show you from this trip.” “Amen…” Irit Erenbaum murmured. Ariella realized that she was reading deeper into her words. Were her parents expecting her to return home with Osher? When she hung up with her mother, she heated water in the kettle, drank a weak coffee, and let the heat spread throughout her muscles. As of now, her plans regarding Osher were rather murky. She wanted to find him, and find out what kind of place he was in, and based on that, she’d decide how to go forward. If this “yeshivah” seemed to be a good place — or at least not a harmful one — then she wouldn’t intervene. But if, chalilah, it turned out to be a bad place, she’d have to speak to Mommy and Tatty and decide what to do. The warmth that helped her relax just a moment earlier dissipated at once, and she felt the challenge thrumming through her veins, filling her with a strong urge to move, to do, to go out. But then her logical side kicked in: It didn’t make sense to go exploring now, in the dark. She’d get up early tomorrow morning, and she’d have the whole Friday to get to know Acco. The city in which there was a mysterious something or someone that had pulled Osher to it. To be continued…

Speaking with the Hartsteins, it’s easy to see why they like their adventures. Wonderfully family-oriented and fun-loving, they find no greater pleasure than getting together and having a good time in one another’s company.
The Harsteins usually spends Sukkos in their quaint little summer home upstate, and one chol hamoed found them joining some acquaintances who went kayaking nearby. From the moment they got into the water they were hooked, and soon a small flatbed and six kayaks joined the family ATV parked in the shed (I told you they’re fun!). Kayaking can be a real workout, but it’s a very pleasant one that’s not at all strenuous. Best of all, going with family alone allows the entire group to move along at their own pace.
“It’s so beautiful on the water,” Mrs. Hartstein says. “It’s calm, peaceful and really quiet. There are no crowds on the kayaking route we take; it’s just the family and the outdoors.”
WHERE TO GET IN The Hartsteins loved their very first expedition so much that the spot they’d visited that chol hamoed became their go-to kayaking destination. The stream meanders through

wooded areas, avoiding most busy roads and clogged neighborhoods, and provides a lovely escape for a day. Those familiar with the back roads in the FallsburgWoodridge area will probably know of the bridges (one new, one old) that can be found at the triple intersection of Grey Road, Denniston Hill Road and Avon Lodge Road (also known as Tabaczynski Road). To find the bridge, use this intersection: Grey Rd & Denniston Hill Rd, Fallsburg, NY 12701. To begin your kayaking route, get into the water at the foot of the bridge, and follow the current! (The water will come from the direction of Avon Lodge Road and move toward Denniston Hill Road.) This stream can take you all the way to Holiday Mountain Ski and Fun Park (know that stream next to the parking lot?). But that’s private property, so you’ll want to get out of the water right after you pass under the NY-17, before you hit the Holiday Mountain park. (Bear in mind that you can’t do this the other way around. When kayaking, you need to follow the current of the water, so there’s no way to get into the water near Holiday Mountain and head in the opposite direction.)

WHERE TO GET OUT CHOOSING A KAYAK Like any other sport product out there, there are enough varieties of kayaks to make one dizzy. There are single kayaks, tandem kayaks; wider kayaks, narrower kayaks; sit-in kayaks, sit-on kayaks. If you’re interested in purchasing one, expect to pay about $300 and up. The Hartsteins prefer sit-in kayaks, where the person paddling actually sits within the kayak’s body, to sit-on kayaks, where the seat is on the surface of the kayak. Sit-in kayaks tend to be steadier; sit-on kayaks, on the other hand, feel rather wobbly and top-heavy. Additionally, sitting kayaks offer comfortable legroom inside what’s called the cockpit of the kayak, and the area doubles as a roomy storage compartment. Sit-on kayaks, though, do have the advantage in the wilder waters of the ocean as they can’t capsize and fill with water.
And yes, you have to think about this before you get into the water. The Hartsteins work this out by taking two cars, parking one car at the end of their kayaking route, and then continuing with the entire family to the starting point. The first time you’ll be taking this trip, you’ll want to scout out the end of the kayaking route by car before getting into the water to find a flat place that will allow you to get out of the water with your kayaks. Park one car there, and then proceed to the entry point near the bridge.
SAFETY FIRST!
A sit-in kayak
A sit-on kayak
Another general rule when it comes to kayaks: the longer and narrower the kayak, the steadier it is and the faster it moves. Keep that in mind when choosing yours. If you do go the route of purchasing kayaks, you’d be wise to remember that it doesn’t end there… Your car would need to be fitted with either a roof rack or a hitch with a small trailer attached to transport the kayaks to the water. Then you’d need a whole lot of bungee cords to strap the kayaks down during transport. That’s the reason some more easygoing kayak enthusiasts go the route of buying an inflatable kayak. The downside is that inflatable kayaks are more lightweight, which translates to less steady movement in the water. But there’s no doubt they’re easy to manage. An inflatable kayak fits neatly in the car, and then all you need is to inflate it when you reach the water. And even more attractive? They’re priced at approximately $200.

Don’t get into the water without a life vest on, and always, always follow instructions. If you have a penchant for questioning safety guidelines, leave that smart-aleck part of you home! Don’t squeeze into tight spaces, don’t try any tricks, and follow the widest, most boring path for as long as you’re in the water. At least one member of the group should carry a phone, which should be placed into a waterproof bag and hung around the neck. Waterproof pouches such as the one below were designed for expressly this purpose and are available for under $10. And don’t forget the life vests!

KEEP IN MIND This kayaking route will take between two and three hours. Driving from the bridge to Holiday Mountain (or vice
versa, if you’re on the way back from parking the car) takes a fraction of that time, but kayaking all the way will take considerably longer. Expect to get wet. No matter how careful you are, there’s no getting in and out of a kayak very neatly, and some splashing and spraying is part of the deal. So wear old clothes, the less absorbent the better. If you don’t want it at the bottom of the stream, don’t bring it along. There’s no simple way (if at all) to retrieve any-
thing once it’s fallen into the water, so no jewelry, no watches and no electronics — save one phone for safety purposes (mentioned above). Remember to take along some food, packed in another waterproof bag.
When you get hungry, pause your paddling for a few minutes in an area where the current isn’t very strong. The kayaks will float in place and give you a chance to take a bite to eat and simply enjoy your family’s company and the gentle rolling of the water. Now where to place the food? The Hartsteins attach a

large tube to the end of one kayak, and that’s where they tie their waterproof bag of food. One member of the group reaches for the food, and then it gets passed around from kayak to kayak. If you can help it, don’t climb out of your kayak while still in the water, even in very shallow areas. Climbing out and
then back in is more difficult than you’d think, and there’s always the chance that the current may snatch at your kayak and take it along for the ride — without you. If there hasn’t been much rain, the water won’t be high enough for kayaking. And even when it is high enough, ex-
pect some areas to be full of stones. You may find your kayak getting stuck in those places, and when that happens, use your paddle to maneuver off the rocky floor. If the water is really shallow, it may be necessary to climb out of your kayak to push it back into the water. “At this point we already know which areas are full of stones and where the current is wilder,” Mrs. Hartstein says. “Near the end it’s like that, both wild and stony. But it’s all part of the fun!” Disclaimer: The Boro Park View is providing these details for informational purposes only. Please do your own research to gauge the safety and appropriateness of the destinations mentioned.
KAYAK RENTALS If you wish to go kayaking without the hassle of purchase and transport, there’s always the option of renting a kayak. Renting a kayak also means there will be no need for a second car. On calm waters, like a lake, you’ll wound back to where you started, and on wilder river currents, water sport rentals usually arrange drop-off and pick-up spots, with shuttles to transport you to wherever you parked your car. Some great options nearby: Call before visiting to ensure that attractions are indeed open. Due to COVID-19, times/fees listed may change at any time.

“The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope,” said Scottish thinker John Buchan. Fishing is a pursuit of skill, patience and determination. Fishing methods may differ from region to region, but there is a shared commonality between them. A lake fisherman in New York casts his rod on Lake Champlain. An ice fisher in Minnesota bores a hole in Lake Superior. A trawler in Maine casts its nets, an angler in Montana hurls his fly, and a ship captain in Florida roughs the ocean currents for his daily haul. Fishing is an art, and here’s how it’s done.
Freshwater Fishing Freshwater fishing is a common type of fishing for those living in the Midwestern states and many areas of upstate New York. Freshwater fishing is ideal for beginning anglers because it can be done from the shoreline and is easy to set up and master. Some of the most common fish found in New York State are rainbow trout, bass and pike. Worms and minnows are common live bait used in freshwater fishing.
Saltwater Fishing Saltwater fishing is the preferred method of those who fish for sport. It is also the most common type of fishing for those living in Florida and other coastal areas. Saltwater fishing is often done aboard boats that take anglers out to the deep water of the ocean. Saltwater fishing can also be done from bridges or piers that jut out into the sea. This option may be preferable for those who suffer from seasickness and would not enjoy the bumps and tumble of the sea aboard a deep-sea fishing vessel. Sea fish are often larger than those found in lakes and rivers. That’s why a saltwater fisherman must be prepared for a struggle when reeling in his catch.

Fly Fishing Fly fishing is a method that involves the angler wading deep into the water with boots and waterproof gear to cast a line. The most common casting technique is the overhead cast. At the end of the line is a real fly that’s used as bait. This method fools the fish into thinking that the fly that has landed is not attached to anything. When the fish bites at the fly, the fish gets caught and the fisherman reels it in. Fly fishing is a challenging method to master, but many consider it serene and peaceful. The fly fishing method is used to catch both freshwater and saltwater fish.
Ice Fishing Ice fishing is common in northern states and Canada. During the winter months, the ice on the lakes and rivers is thick enough to support walking or driving. An ice fisher uses a tool called an auger to drill a hole in the ice deep enough to reach the water below. The drilling and chiseling take strength and stamina. Once the hole is bored, a line with bait is placed, and the wait for the catch begins. Each hole is marked so that others are aware of them. Many choose to camp out in tents on the ice while they wait for their catch. It is essential to be prepared with proper protection from the elements. While it might seem somewhat revolting, maggots are the preferred form of bait for ice fishing.

Rods When choosing rods or bait, one must decide which method of fishing he intends to pursue and which type of fish he plans to catch. Rods vary in size and strength, and it is vital to choose one that fits the angler’s particular needs.
Fishing Nets and Trapping This method is used primarily for industrial fishing. Nets are cast to trap large amounts of fish at once. Off the coast of Maine, many fishers place traps that are left at sea with bait in them. Fish swim into the traps and are unable to swim out. The next day, anglers return to haul their catch into their ships. Many nets have a turtle excluder device that allows sea turtles to escape entrapment in fishermen’s nets.
Expert Advice Mr. Larry Kuczynski is a legendary educator in the South Florida Jewish community. He served as principal of the RASG Hebrew Academy of Miami and currently directs the assessment and certification of schools throughout the United States. Mr. Kuczynski is also an avid saltwater angler. He fishes primarily off the coast of the Florida Keys and Miami. In a conversation for this piece, Mr. Kuczynski shared some of his expertise. According to Mr. Kuczynski, the most common types of kosher fish found off the coast of Florida are mahi mahi (also known as dolphinfish — not to be confused with the dolphin mammal, which is not kosher), Spanish mackerel and snappers. When fishing from a boat, a preferred method is trolling, which lets the line with bait trail behind the boat at a slow speed, mimicking live fish movements. Live bait can be used, though some choose to use dead bait (such as squid cut into chunks) or artificial lures that mimic the motions of live fish. The fingers of an angler must be sensitive to jerks and bites on the line, and one should never pull in a line too fast because he will lose the bait — and his catch.
It is also essential to be respectful of the rules of the water. Mr. Kuczynski described the time he caught 30 mutton snappers, but had to toss 27 back into the sea because they were a quarter of an inch shorter than the size that he was legally allowed to keep. Fishing with a knowledgeable boat captain who can identify areas with large numbers of fish is always a plus. Today, modern electronic fish finders allow captains to identify such areas

more easily. According to Mr. Kuczynski, it is essential to bring along a good friend as there is nothing like a good schmooze when the fish aren’t biting, and a good sefer is always welcome. I asked Mr. Kuczynski about his largest catch. He told me that during the 1980s, he would take his class fishing from the old Seven Mile Bridge in the Florida Keys. During one such expedition, he caught a three-foot hammerhead shark. And his most frightening moment? That was when his boat got stuck on a sandbar during low tide in the finger channels of Biscayne Bay. He jumped into the water and was able to extricate the vessel from the sand, but the effort exhausted him and he was unable to climb back in. His companions on the boat, who were unable to locate him, began to panic, but he was holding on to the anchor line, and eventually they were able to rope him in. Another frightening incident took place when he was with a friend off the coast of Miami. They noticed dark storm clouds forming in the sky, and suddenly, a fierce lighting storm was upon them. They were unable to see two feet in front of them. Knowing that at their location the coast is always to the west, they turned their boat in that direction and eventually found the Haulover entry point — and dry land.

Kosher Fish Fish are kosher when they have fins and scales. However, one must be careful to ensure that the scales are true scales and not just part of the skin. The way to tell is to run a finger or knife against the grain and see if the scales come off. If they do, the fish is kosher. Sturgeon have scales, but this fish is classified as a ganoid (covered in a hard substance), which has scales that cannot be easily removed without ripping the skin; as such, it is considered a nonkosher species of fish. The Gemara in Chullin states that any fish that has scales definitely has fins, and therefore if one finds a fish with scales on it, he may consume it even if it does not have a fin.
The Stincus Marinus Controversy About 400 years ago, a sea creature was found in the Spanish Sea with scales and legs but no fins. The creature was called the stincus marinus. The Tosafos Yom Tov was asked if the fish was kosher, and he ruled that the fish was not. Chazal’s rule about fins and scales, he said, applied only to fish and not to other sea creatures. Rav Yonasan Eibeshutz concurred and made the argument that perhaps the rule of Chazal was a rule of rov — of majority — and in a case where it was known with certainty that the fish has
ווארט איר א ?שידוך
המסוגל

no fins, it would be considered nonkosher. The Pri Chadash rejected these rulings and stated that the rule of Chazal is absolute and applies to all sea creatures. Seemingly, this creature must have had fins and shed them at some point. Accordingly, the Pri Chadash ruled that the creature was kosher. The Bechor Shor also ruled that the creature was kosher as he considered the creature’s legs to be its fins.
לשידוכים ט"ו באב
Eventually, the controversy over the stincus marinus was found not to be an issue at all. Upon further research, it was established that the stincus marinus was not an aquatic creature, but rather a lizard from the skink family that lived along the coast of the sea. The rule of Chazal that all fish that have fins have scales knows no exceptions.
Fishing is an experience that all ages can enjoy, both as a solitary endeavor or a group outing. This summer, grab a rod and head to a body of water to give it a shot. Let’s go fishing!

The United States is a country known for its varied topography and geological features. But whether one visits east or west — and to a lesser degree, north or south — the coastal towns the country over boast a charm that is difficult to find farther inland. Here we present a few spots that highlight Hashem’s wonder.
SITKA, ALASKA You don’t need to be told where the picturesque city of Sitka is located; the mountainous backdrop of the lovely photo will tell you all about it. Situated at the very edge of Tongass National Forest, which is the largest in the country at 16.7 million acres of forest, this city has a population that numbers under 10,000 — hardly a city in those terms; most definitely a city in Alaskan terms. Fun Fact: With its total area of over 4,800 square miles, Sitka is the largest city-borough by total area in the United States.

CAPITOLA, CALIFORNIA The storybook town of Capitola, California — the oldest resort town in the state — looks more like an Italian village than one on the West Coast, all the way down to its Mediterranean-style cottages and narrow walkways. The brightly colored exteriors present a panoramic shoreline view, and it only goes to show that its residents are all of the same mind: to keep Capitola’s charm whole. Fun Fact: Capitola is known for its story of the birds. Back in 1961, hundreds of birds of non-aggressive species stormed down from the sky and attacked the town. The mystery went unsolved for over 25 years, until researchers discovered that the fowl had been affected by a toxic substance produced by red algae, which led to their uncharacteristic predatory behavior.

ST. AUGUSTINE, FLORIDA While St. Augustine, Florida, is actually a city, its vibes are too unusual to pass up mentioning. Replete with cobblestone streets and architecture that appears to have come straight out of the Iberian Peninsula, it’s easy for visitors to believe that they’ve landed in Spain. Indeed, its rich and varied history can almost rival that of any European country. Fun Fact: Founded in 1565 by Spanish explorers, St. Augustine claims to be the oldest city in the country! It is also home to Castillo de San Marcos, the oldest masonry fort in the United States, originally built by slaves.

JEKYLL ISLAND, GEORGIA The dramatic topography of Jekyll Island is why this destination is considered one of the most beautiful small towns in the United States. With flat beaches and lovely hiking areas in one section, and wild marshes full of driftwood from the Atlantic Ocean in the other, the natural landscapes of this island are a sight to behold. Fun Fact: Jekyll Island is also home to a few dozen mansion-sized “cottages” dating back to the Gilded Age. Their owners were part of the prestigious Jekyll Island Club and include many recognizable names, among them J.P. Morgan, Joseph Pulitzer, William Rockefeller, and several members of the famed Vanderbilt family.

NEW CASTLE, NEW HAMPSHIRE New Castle is the smallest town in New Hampshire, and it is also the only town in the state entirely composed of islands. Walking tours and boating tours abound, and the town boasts two historic forts as well. New Castle is home to the famous Wentworth-by-the-Sea, a Gilded Age hotel that has seen decades of history pass through its doors. Its fortunes changed along with the times, and while it was very nearly demolished some 25 years ago, today Wentworthby-the-Sea is a Marriott resort that is a protected member of Historic Hotel of America. Fun Fact: A very strange occurrence involving raining stones took place in New Castle in the year 1682. A much-despised resident Quaker, who was the largest landowner on the island, was the primary target of these odd incidents. The string of wild accusations that followed soon mushroomed into a growing international affair that eventually culminated in the legendary Salem witch trials of 1692 that saw many innocents sentenced to death.

BALD HEAD ISLAND, NORTH CAROLINA It must have been a fellow with a great imagination who decided that the dunes at the southern end of the island resembled bald heads! But the name stuck, and before lighthouses lit the night for passing boats, the mariners knew to look out for the “bald heads” to avoid striking the shore. Eventually lighthouses took over the task, and today the most popular landmark and attraction on the island is Old Baldy, the 110-foot-high lighthouse that was built in 1817! The best part of this tiny island, after its picture-perfect topography? No cars are allowed on its streets. Instead, tourists and residents get around on golf carts, and this lends the already-beautiful town a special charm that is perfect for vacationers looking for some peace and quiet. Fun Fact: Bald Head’s shores provide prime habitat for nesting sea turtles, some of them of endangered species. Every year, visitors can watch hundreds of tiny baby turtles emerging from their nests and slowly making their way to the sea.

BANDON, OREGON Named by BudgetTravel one of the “Coolest Small Towns of American,” Bandon, or Bandonby-the-Sea, is best known for its very distinct rock formations found off its shore. Known as sea stacks, these dramatic rocks soaring into the air are a popular attraction, and Bandon’s friendly locals and lack of crowds only add to this town’s charm. Fun Fact: Bandon is known as the Cranberry Capital of Oregon, and the town hosts the Annual Cranberry Festival each September to celebrate the cranberries’ harvest. Why cranberries? As the story goes, a man by the name of Charles McFarlin had originally come west to pan for gold in California. When he was met with dismal failure, he decided to try his luck in a trade he knew: harvesting cranberries. He imported cranberry vines from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, got to work, and very quickly found the fortunes he’d been looking for.

CHINCOTEAGUE, VIRGINIA Chincoteague, Virginia, is a charming town that encompasses Chincoteague Island and its marshy waters. Chincoteague is famous for the herd of wild ponies that have lived on adjacent Assateague Island since the sixteenth or seventeenth century. Once a year, the town of Chincoteague hosts Pony Penning Day. During the Pony Swim, the ponies are herded across the shallow waters between the islands and then led through the town. On the following day, some of the foals are auctioned off to raise money for the local fire department and to keep the horse population in check. Pony Penning Day has been an annual event since 1924. This year as well as last, the event was canceled due to COVID-19. These two years mark the very first time Pony Penning Day was canceled since World War II. Fun Fact: A children’s book published in 1947 titled Misty of Chincoteague was inspired by a real-life pony of Chincoteague by the same name. Until her death in 1972 at the age of 26, the true Misty was an equine celebrity, attracting tens of thousands of visitors each year.

Heading off into summer bein hazmanim brings a whole new scenery, and with it, the need to deal with a range of halachic issues that tend to crop up when away from our normal routine. A number of issues that are perennial favorites are addressed below. DON’T GET BURNED
APPLYING SUNSCREEN ON SHABBOS In dealing with the application of sprays, creams or lotions on Shabbos, there are generally two basic halachic concerns. One is the prohibition of smoothing out a thick solid-like matter, known as mimarei’ach. The other is the disallowance of ingesting or applying medicine. In regard to the usage of medications, only things that are intended to relieve existing ailments or discomfort

are prohibited, whereas something preventative is not classified as a medicine in regard to this halacha, and is allowed. Thus, proactively applying sunscreen to avoid a future burn is permitted in this regard. (Applying an ointment to relieve an existing burn would be problematic, and would be allowed only if the burn caused one to feel seriously unwell to the degree that they would require bed rest, or if there was a credible risk of infection.) As far as the concern of mimarei’ach: The general rule here is that only solids or thick substances that are difficult to pour are subject to this prohibition. Liquidlike substances may be spread on one’s skin. Putting all this together, what emerges is that using a spray or liquid form of sunscreen is entirely permitted, while applying a thick ointment or using a solid “stick” sunscreen is forbidden.

THE SUPE RI METH OR FOR BEDOD ERADICATBUG ION
When staying over at kitchen-equipped hotels, or at an Airbnb, many food preparation questions arise. Can any kitchenware be used? Does it need to be kashered? Dealing with one of the more pressing questions, let’s focus on the use of the microwave. A microwave can be potentially problematic for a variety of reasons. These include nonkosher food residue on the turntable or floor of the microwave, nonkosher flavor or steam that became absorbed in the very walls of the microwave, or nonkosher food particles that may end up behind the vent. All these can feasibly impart flavor into the kosher food you now wish to cook. Is there any solution? The first step is to perform a visual inspection, ensuring the interior is completely clean, and washing off any possible residue. After that, some say that the microwave can be kashered by placing a cup or bowl of water on the turntable, and running the microwave on high until steam spreads throughout the microwave. This kosher steam would come into contact with all the walls, kashering them. The efficacy of this solution, however, is debatable. A better solution would be to place the food within a large plastic bag that has plenty of room (a shopping bag works well). (Do not seal or tie the bag closed, as this will cause it to explode, creating both a cleanliness and kashrus headache.) Then, place this bag inside another plastic bag, also with plenty of space. The two bags should be inverted, with the opening of the inner bag facing the opposite direction of the opening of the outer bag. This solution effectively negates the possibility of any particles entering the food, while at the same time leaving room for air to escape. JUST ONE TIME

KNOW YOUR LIMITS
TECHUM SHABBOS CONCERNS
head start on setting everything up before the rest of the party catches up, you suddenly recall that the brand-new grill you bought has never been toiveled. Wracking your brains, you try to remember: Does a grill need tevilah? If yes, which parts? And if I’m stuck, is it true that you’re allowed to use something one time before toiveling it? The laws of tevilas keilim are many, and they depend on the details of the specific item in question. The basic halacha, though, is that any utensil used for food preparation or as tableware must be toiveled, if they are constructed of either metal or glass. But tevilah is required only if the utensil in question comes into direct contact with food. In the case of the grill, the grill is something used to prepare food, and it is constructed of metal. As far as contact, the grates come into direct contact with the food, but the rest of the grill does not. As such, the metal grates must be toiveled before use. It is forbidden to use any item obligated in tevilah before it is toiveled. Contrary to a widely propagated fallacy, there is no allowance whatsoever to use the item “temporarily” or “only one time” prior to tevilah.1 As such, due diligence must be taken to avoid landing in difficult situations with hungry children clamoring for food while parents search out creative solutions. If one does get stuck in a situation where there is no mikvah in the vicinity, there may be solutions such as doing tevilah in a lake or other body of water, or by temporarily selling the item in question to a non-Jew. As these solutions can run into complications and can be case-specific, a rav should be consulted.

The sun sets beyond the trees as Shabbos arrives. Birds are chirping and the weather is stunning; it’s a perfect time to take a walk over to the next bungalow colony down the road to visit some old friends who just arrived from the city a few hours earlier. After dutifully checking your pockets to ensure you don’t accidentally carry something beyond the eiruv, you head out on your way. What could possibly be wrong? While many “Shabbos strollers” take proper care to ensure their pockets are empty, there is another serious halacha that can often be overlooked. In addition to the severity of actual violation, the price to pay for doing so is quite serious. This halacha is that of techum Shabbos. Namely, a person may not travel on Shabbos anywhere beyond a 2,000-amah (approximately half a mile) perimeter from his original Shabbos resting “zone.” This is true even when traveling on foot, and while not carrying anything at all. For most of us, this halacha poses no practical concern throughout the year. A person’s original “zone” is usually his home city, giving him an allowance of 2,000 amos beyond city limits, well beyond the normal Shabbos routine. When leaving the city, however, this issue takes on a practical urgency. Rather than an entire city, one’s initial zone is generally limited to one’s camp or bungalow colony. A simple stroll down the road inevitably takes one beyond their home zone and can easily lead to traversing the 2,000-amah limit. What happens if one crosses this point of no return?

Generally speaking, a person who realizes that he crossed the line must immediately stop in his spot. From that exact point, he has a circle with a four-amah radius in all directions. He may move about freely within this circle, but may not leave this encircled area until after the end of Shabbos. The exception to this rule, however, is if one came to the realization that he violated the halacha only after entering someone’s house or an eiruvenclosed area. In this case, one may move about freely within the entire enclosed area, but may not return home nor even step foot outside the enclosed area.2 (In the event of extreme weather conditions, or being in a spot containing other present dangers, one would be allowed to leave one’s spot and travel to the nearest area of shelter. Once there, one would need to remain in that shelter or building for the duration of Shabbos. If the shelter is within an eiruv-enclosed area, he may walk around within the enclosed area, but not beyond. Similarly, if someone stuck in one spot due to a techum violation needed to use a restroom, he would be allowed to walk to the nearest facility. As above, he would have to remain in that location for the duration of Shabbos.) It is imperative to realize that calculating the limits of one’s home zone, and determining where exactly one reaches the 2,000-amah limit, is a matter of extremely complex nature. It is critical that one wishing to go for such a walk clarify the matter with a competent halachic authority before doing so.3 AN OPEN -AND -SHUT MAT TER
MILK BOTTLES AT GAS STATIONS In an attempt to attract the many halacha-observant passengers to their establishments, a number of gas stations
and rest areas along popular summer routes offer chalav Yisroel milk alongside their coffee. While a welcome offering, this can present a serious kashrus dilemma. Many of us are familiar with the concept of seals on meat packages. Chazal instituted that meat sent with a non-Jewish courier or stored in a non-Jewish facility must be properly sealed to avoid the risk of being switched with a non-kosher alternative. Unbeknownst to many, however, the laws of chosamos — seals — apply to other foods as well, including milk and cheese products. In our scenario, the one opening the bottle may certainly enjoy his milk — but as soon as he moves on, leaving the bottle without watchful eyes, the unsealed milk becomes forbidden to all subsequently arriving travelers. It is worth noting that the financial incentive to substitute non-chalav Yisroel milk is real, particularly when a store is running low on the chalav Yisroel milk and will not receive a new delivery until the next day. (For those who rely on chalav stam there would be no risk, as according to this opinion any milk that might be substituted would be acceptable as well.)4
Presumably, this error stems from confusion with a different halacha, that being the ruling of a number of poskim that single-use disposable items do not require tevilah. It is for this reason that common practice is not to toivel aluminum pans and such. [Likewise, disposable grills clearly intended for one-time use would not be obligated in tevilah.] The two cases, however, differ fundamentally. A disposable item is not regarded as a kli, a full-fledged utensil, in regard to tevilah. Something that is meant to last, however, is by definition a kli and is obligated. Once obligated, there are never any exceptions for allowing use prior to tevilah.
1
2 This exception holds true only in the case of an inadvertent violation. If one deliberately violated the halacha, one would be restricted to one’s immediate four amos even within an enclosed area — unless the violation was for a permitted cause, such as responding to a Hatzolah call.
A number of years ago I had the opportunity to spend Shabbos at an event at Yam Hamelach. Much to my dismay, on Shabbos afternoon I looked out from an upper floor window to observe clearly frum families walking, with strollers, far out onto the stone embankments stretching out into the water. As the hotel was not halachically located within any city, the eiruv, as well as the “home zone,” ended at the hotel fence. With a lack of thought, these people were clearly in violation of both the halachos of techum Shabbos and hotza’ah. 3
4
Of note, if there are sealed bottles present, there may be room to allow using the opened one, as explained below. One should consult with one’s rav.

Stories of the Sea
As a child, among other natural forms of long-distance communication, I tried releasing helium balloons in hopes of establishing a correspondence with someone far away. My neighborhood friends and I repeatedly released countless message-bearing balloons into the summer sky, but only once after such an endeavor did we hear regards afterward: when we found a balloon hanging on our backyard tree. Oh well, some have more luck than others.
In stark contrast to those writing letters in bottles simply for amusement, many have actually found this form of communication a lifesaving instrument. The following are some incredible stories that actually did happen. Trapped seamen aboard a hijacked cargo boat, tossed a bottled SOS message into the ocean below. The letter was retrieved by British commandos — who immediately stormed the ship, rescued the grateful hostages and arrested the pirates.
In contrast, stuffing your messages down a bottle’s neck is — surprisingly — a more reliable transport for your letters. Well-sealed bottles can float around for many years until discovered, and many find it amusing to send their letters down the currents, with the hope that someone It takes about a year for a bottle on the other side of the sea will contact to make its way from the West them. Indies to Europe — that is, if the These tightly closed bottles can have oceanography will allow it. some mighty adventures in the high seas. The longest recorded sea journey by a message-toting bottle continued for over 9,000 miles before that bottle hit dry land! Some send their diary entries into the waves, hoping their memos will never be found. They may find it therapeutic to send an unaddressed letter, with feelings or memories they wish never to revisit. On the other hand, many do hope their bottle will be found so they can test and study the direction and speed of ocean litter, and track where drifting World War II mines were likely to end up. Actually, sending bottled notes out to sea has been part of experiments for many years. In 310 BCE, Greek philosopher Theophrastus released marked bottles into the water to prove that the Mediterranean Sea was fed by the inflowing Atlantic Ocean.
“Message-in-a-bottle-hunter” is the self-taken title of Clint Buffington, who has collected 82 bottles bobbing around at sea.

In June of 2019, three backpackers got stuck above a waterfall in California. They dropped a bottle containing a message into the falls explaining their predicament and revealing their location. It swam a quarter mile before being found. By morning, they were rescued by helicopter.

In March of 2014, a wellsealed bottle containing a message dating back to May 17, 1913, was discovered by a fisherman out on the Baltic Sea. The message detailed the sender’s address and included two stamps so the finder need not incur the cost of postage. After much research, the card finally found its way to the sender’s granddaughter. A 101-year-old find!
If you do find a barrel on the beach, be careful! You might be tampering with historical artifacts. While returning from America, Christopher Columbus ran into a vicious storm that threatened his very existence. He penned some words on parchment addressed to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, which was placed in a wooden barrel. The intended communication was deposited into the raging seas, never to be found.
Clarity in a Bottle Innocent sea trash might just hold the contents of some very valuable legacies. In the cities near the prison where Maharam MiRottenberg was sadly incarcerated, there were some varying opinions over the exact text of the Torah. In a dream, the saintly tzaddik miraculously received the Sefer Torah of Ezra Hasofer to clarify the disparities. The tzaddik verified the exact texts, and wrote it all down for reference. Providentially, the prison was near an accessible stream from where the tzaddik dispatched his writings in a watertight bottle. The bottle was later found downstream by the city’s Jewish residents, who celebrated the continuity of the Torah’s unchanging mesorah.
