MAINE MUSTS

(Re: Excursions, Portland, Maine, Issue 94) I saw your Excursions feature on Portland, Maine. I was there two weeks ago with my family, and indeed, it is a beautiful destination. I’d like to add some information that may be helpful for readers who are planning a visit. In regard to kosher food, there is a very nice selection at Trader Joe’s, and I saw that you did not mention that. There’s even a selection of meat with a heimish hechsher. Trader Joe’s is located at 87 Marginal Way, Portland, ME 04101. You also skipped Peak’s Island, which is a really beautiful destination. You mentioned the ferry to Peak’s Island, but once on the island you can rent a golf cart there to ride around, and it’s a special place to visit. Furthermore, the Chabad House in Portland is an amazing resource. The Rav is exceptionally helpful with providing information for the stay. They also rent sleeping accommodations in the Chabad House, and have a cook from whom Shabbos meals can be ordered. Chezky Levy

(Re: Excursions, Portland, Maine, Issue 94) Thank you for a pleasant read. Even though I don’t anticipate being in the Portland vicinity anytime soon, I appreciated your write-up and all the research you did. An extra special thanks for reminding us to use caution when visiting beaches. I know your staff could’ve dismissed it easily, write a disclaimer, and let visitors figure it out on their own. So kol hakavod. Your mentioning it (at each location again) makes being makpid the “in” thing to do. You have a real koach, so at the same time, please note that the phone in the waterproof pouch in your kayaking feature should not have been a smartphone. A Reader

sponse to the letter written by a health care worker regarding making sure that one’s doctor gets paid for services rendered. As a medical biller, I can really relate to this letter and know how much money doctors can lose out on if patients are not on top of their insurance coverage. I have countless stories of patients who did not provide their active insurance information to the front desk and how much time we spent running after them. Sometimes we were even unable to reach them, causing the provider to not get paid for their services. Thank you, A.R., for raising awareness on such an important but overlooked topic. (Re: Your Voice, Issue 94) I read the letter from an employee at a medical facility, and it seems the law clearly disagrees with her. It is squarely on the shoulders of the physician and staff to check patient status prior to each and every visit. And changing a PCP is not so simple and no fun at all... Do your part responsibly. I’m sorry that you’re learning that the hard way. In regard to having to chase after people, for that we can blame the recent unprecedented spike in scam calls, spam calls and various relentless telemarketers; I know I simply stopped answering my ringing phones! After all, there’s a limit to how many times a day I want to extend my vehicle’s warranty or be taken to the Bahamas... Possibly Your Patient

AN EVERLASTING EICHA

(Re: Parsha, Any Minute Now, Issue 93) There was an article in your Tisha B’Av issue in which it was written that Megillas Eicha is not written on klaf, as opposed to the other megillos, which 1358 41st Street T 718.438.3451 E info@everythingaudiofactory.com M-TH 10:30-5:30 F 10:30-12:30

are written on klaf. That is so, you wrote, since Eicha is not everlasting. I just want to correct that and let you know that many kehillos do, in fact, read Eicha from a klaf. And contrary to what the article mentions, Eicha is an eternal thing. When Moshiach comes, it will still be around. Please verify the information that you wrote. Rabbi S. Y. LEVENSTEIN RESPONDS: Thank you for your comments. It is something that could and should be clarified. You are right; this thought should have been expressed differently. Over the years, there was a hekpeidah by certain tzaddikim and kehillos not to write Eicha on klaf. On the same note, many had an old minhag not to take home the Kinnos from shul after using it on Tisha B’Av, hoping that this was the last time the Kinnos would be used. At the same time, there are those who say that our Tisha B’Av lamentations will be sung as zemiros when Moshiach comes. May it be soon.

A POWERFUL STORY

(Re: Blue Eyes, Issue 93) First of all, thank you for such an amazing magazine; it’s my Wednesday treat. I look out for it every week, and you never disappoint. I can’t recall the last time I read such a powerful story as Blue Eyes by Chana Hindy Schechter. She really outdid herself with this chilling and poignant masterpiece. Since I, too, was gifted with a talent in writing, I would like to know: Is there an option for readers to submit articles for publication? The name he received? Yes! None other than Reb Menachem Asher Zackbach — the very same one who inspired him to strengthen his diligence in Birchas Hamazon! * * * * * The key to parnassah is in our hands when we recite Birchas Hamazon. As the Sefer Hachinuch promises, “One who is careful with Birchas Hamazon will be granted sustenance in dignity all his days.” The Chida writes that bentching aloud in a pleasant voice is a segulah for wealth.

To his dismay, he realized that he had neglected to bring a bentcher. No bentcher, no food, he reminded himself. Hakadosh Baruch Hu wants to shower us with bounty; in fact, He has prepared a great shefa for every Yid. By saying Birchas Hamazon with kavanah, we acknowledge that Hashem is the One supporting us and sending us the parnassah we want. In this manner, once we recognize the Source, we merit accessing the blessings. * * * * *

There was once a guest in the home of Reb Shalom Yitzchak Mizrachi, author of Sheilos v’Teshuvos Divrei Shalom. When it came time for bentching, Reb Shalom opened his thick Rosh Hashanah machzor and began to bentch, every syllable clearly enunciated. The guest couldn’t resist and blurted out, “Are there not enough bentchers?” He saw bentchers in all sizes, colors and fonts on the table. “Why use such a heavy, thick machzor?” “Great question!” Reb Shalom replied. “I am afraid I might come to bentch out of rote. That’s why I specifically take out my Rosh Hashanah machzor, the very one we daven with with all our hearts and deepest kavanah. This reminds me that Birchas Hamazon shouldn’t be any less and deserves my full concentration.”

Did You Know? The elevated moments when one recites Birchas Hamazon create such an eis ratzon that the Chofetz Chaim suggested taking advantage of their potency to ask for anything you may need.

CHAPTER 18 RECAP: Shabbesai Tzvi returns to Cairo, and Diego Vargas, a Marrano who has come to visit Refael Yosef, shares with them the story of Sarah, the girl who awaits to become the bride of Moshiach.

“I

t’s a fascinating story, Diego,” said Shabbesai Tzvi. “Refael Yosef, what do you have to say to this story? Have you heard it before?” “Only recently. Several of my guests from Livorno have confirmed this story, with a few very minor variations. They all say the story is widely known in Amsterdam and Livorno.” “I see,” said Shabbesai Tzvi. He closed his eyes and threw back his head, his lips murmuring softly in the stillness of the night. The echoes of the story hung in the silent air. At last, he opened his eyes and stared intently at Diego Vargas. “You did well to tell me this story, Diego,” he said. “You were sent to Cairo as a messenger from Heaven, and you have done your work well. Are you prepared to be sent on another mission?” Diego Vargas jumped to his feet. “I stand ready at any time,” he cried. Shabbesai Tzvi smiled. “Listen to me, Diego. I want you to return to Europe immediately. I want you to go to Livorno and bring Sarah to Cairo. When I see her, I will know the truth.” He turned to Refael Yosef. “Do I have permission to impose on your hospitality?”

“My house and my services are at the Master’s disposal.” “May the Almighty shower you with His blessings, Refael Yosef.” He turned back to Diego Vargas. “Diego, one of my most trusted men, Yechiel Hapolani, will accompany you on your journey. Good night, Diego. Come to me tomorrow before you leave.” Diego bowed deeply, and without turning his back on Shabbesai Tzvi, walked away until he disappeared from sight. “How long will it take for them to return from Livorno, Refael Yosef?” asked Shabbesai Tzvi. “Not more than two or three weeks.” “Very good,” said Shabbesai Tzvi. “Refael Yosef, the time has come for me to tell you the purpose of my visit.” “I await the Master’s words.” For the next half-hour, Shabbesai Tzvi spoke of the difficulties he had encountered in Yerushalayim and how the evil forces of the kelipah had turned the hearts of the people of Yerushalayim to stone. It had been a very discouraging year, but he had waited patiently for a sign. And the sign had come in the form of the qadi’s decree. Refael Yosef drew his breath in sharply when Shabbesai Tzvi mentioned the amount of the tax. It was an exorbitant figure.

“So you see, Refael Yosef,” concluded Shabbesai Tzvi. “I’ve come to Cairo to raise the funds for the qadi’s tax and soften the hearts of the people of Yerushalayim. This is what I must do to defeat the kelipah in Yerushalayim and rescue the scattered sparks of holiness in the holiest place in the world. I’ve come to you, Refael Yosef, because I know I can turn to you for help. If you’ll help me, we can raise the money in a short time. Hopefully, there’ll be enough time for me to bring the money to Yerushalayim and return to Cairo in time for Sarah’s arrival. Will you assist me in this matter?” “Of course I shall, Master. I’ll do even better. I’ll provide the entire amount myself. It’s an enormous sum, but I can raise it from my own resources. The Master can rest assured on this matter. He need not occupy his mind with raising funds.” “You are a true tzaddik, Refael Yosef. The Almighty will repay you in great measure.” “May I speak my thoughts?” asked Refael Yosef. Shabbesai Tzvi nodded. “Perhaps it’s too early for the Master to be in Yerushalayim. Perhaps the Master should enter the holy city only after his name has spread to the four corners of the world.” “What are you saying, Refael Yosef?” “I humbly suggest that perhaps the Master should remain in Cairo for a while after his wedding. That is, of

course, if Sarah is destined to be the Master’s bride. The whole world will hear of the wedding, and they’ll come to pay homage to the Master. My happiness would know no bounds if I could have the great honor of our future king holding court in my home. There’ll be time for Yerushalayim afterward.” An enigmatic smile appeared on Shabbesai Tzvi’s face. He nodded slowly, and then he laughed. Shabbesai Tzvi returned to Yerushalayim with the funds provided by Refael Yosef Chelebi and a large entourage of followers. His triumphant return was greeted with dancing in the streets. Flowers were strewn in his path as he walked to the residence of the Turkish qadi and handed over the money. Even the rabbis who had frowned on Shabbesai Tzvi’s strange behavior came forward to express their gratitude. A complete change came over the inhabitants of Yerushalayim. Large crowds followed Shabbesai Tzvi through the streets. People jostled each other to kiss Shabbesai Tzvi’s hand or the hem of his robes. But Shabbesai Tzvi knew this change of attitude would not last long. Refael Yosef’s words had been inspired and wise. The hot flush of gratitude would fade, and the heart of Yerushalayim would turn to stone again. After basking in the adoration of Yerushalayim for several days, Shabbesai Tzvi prepared to return to the House of Chelebi in Cairo. As news of his imminent departure spread through the city, Shabbesai Tzvi was bombarded with heartrending pleas to reconsider. Yerushalayim would be helpless without the protection of his holy presence, they pleaded. Wasn’t it fitting that such a holy man should live in such a holy city? But it was to no avail. Shabbesai Tzvi would not hear of staying in Yerushalayim. Not yet. Shabbesai Tzvi and his entourage returned to Cairo in high spirits. They had made the journey to Yerushalayim and back in a very short time, and they were surprised to learn that Sarah had already arrived from Livorno. Indeed, within hours after the appearance of Diego Vargas and Yechiel Hapolani, she had been packed and eager to depart. Shabbesai Tzvi was pleased that she had come so quickly. He sent for her immediately. Sarah’s appearance was not what one would have expected from Moshiach’s bride, the future queen of the Jewish people. There was nothing modest in the way she dressed or carried herself. Refael Yosef had been shocked when he had first seen her, but he had considered it improper to speak of his impressions to Shabbesai Tzvi. Better that Shabbesai Tzvi see her himself and make his own judgment. When Sarah first saw Shabbesai Tzvi, she turned white and fell to the ground. Servants rushed to her side, but she waved them away. “He is the one,” she breathed. “The one from my dream.” She struggled to her feet and once again looked at Shabbesai Tzvi, but his penetrating gaze made her look away. Eyes downcast, she walked forward very slowly. Then, she bowed down and touched her forehead to the ground. “Arise, my daughter,” said Shabbesai Tzvi. “The years of your suffering are over. Soon you will be my wife, my queen. We have both waited very long for this day, the day when our destinies would finally be joined.” “I have dreamed of this day, my lord,” she said breathlessly. “I thank the Almighty for this, the brightest moment of my entire life.” Shabbesai Tzvi and Sarah were wed several weeks before Pesach of 1664 in the House of Chelebi.

When Sarah first saw Shabbesai Tzvi, she turned white and fell to the ground. Servants rushed to her side, but she waved them away.

It was by far the largest and most lavish wedding Cairo had ever seen. In addition to thousands of guests from Cairo itself, hundreds of guests came from near and far, among them many wealthy merchants and high government officials in magnificent regalia. Letters of congratulations arrived from as far away as Constantinople and Amsterdam. Avraham Yechini wrote a long, enthusiastic letter, expressing

path. The feasting and revelry lasted far into the night. Musicians played continually. Acrobats and jugglers were hired to entertain the guests. The sounds of drunken laughter echoed through the night. The celebration continued in this fashion for seven days. Shabbesai Tzvi made a few brief appearances at the festivities, remaining otherwise se-

In many ways, it was a royal wedding. Shabbesai Tzvi wore purple robes and a bejeweled turban of white satin. He stood near the fountain, surrounded by a large group of disciples and supporters, and the guests filed by one by one to pay homage to him. They kissed his hand and thanked him profusely for the blessings he bestowed upon them. The mound of gifts at the side of the reception hall grew higher and higher. The frenzied crowds filled the House of Chelebi and spilled into the narrow streets of the Jewish quarter. People clung precariously to windows and roof gables to get a better view of the groom and his bride under the wedding canopy. Shabbesai Tzvi made all the wedding blessings, pronouncing the Shem Hameforash in each one. Although he had done this often before, it nevertheless served to heighten the excitement of the crowds. Surely, Shabbesai Tzvi would not dare utter the Shem Hameforash, they whispered to one another, were he not the real Moshiach. After Shabbesai Tzvi and Sarah had each taken a sip of the wine, Shabbesai Tzvi placed an emerald-studded tiara on Sarah’s head. Wild cheering and dancing greeted the new king and queen as they walked back from the wedding canopy on a flower-strewn

cluded in the small room adjoining the shul, but Sarah enjoyed every minute of it. She had a natural talent for putting people at ease, and she used it to the fullest. When the festivities seemed about to slacken, she raced about crying out to the people to rejoice with her, the poor orphan child from Poland who had lived to become a queen. Yechiel Hapolani, Gamliel Basnoun, and many other disciples and followers returned to their homes shortly after the wedding, but the festivities in the House of Chelebi did not cease. Word of the wild celebrations in Cairo reached distant places, and a steady stream of frivolous rabble began to arrive in the House of Chelebi. Shabbesai Tzvi rarely appeared at these drunken celebrations, but whenever he did, Sarah would rush to his side and treat him with the utmost honor and respect. Although Refael Yosef Chelebi had never presumed to ask Shabbesai Tzvi how he could marry such an immodest woman, he did raise the subject of the celebrations taking place in his home. “It is not a matter for concern,” Shabbesai Tzvi reassured him. “Do not judge these celebrations by their appearance, just as you must not judge the pure and holy soul of Moshiach’s queen by her outward appearance. There is a purpose for everything, Refael Yosef, but for the meantime, it must remain a mystery within a mystery.” To be continued…

New York Bans Marriages for Those Under Eighteen With little fanfare, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation last week that raised the age of consent for marriage to eighteen throughout New York State. The law follows legislation enacted in 2017 that raised the legal age for marriage from fourteen to eighteen, but still allowed seventeen-year-olds to marry with permission from their parents and a judge, reported CBS News. Cuomo had long said that he would eliminate the parental and judicial exemption in order to prevent forced child marriages. The misdemeanor for knowingly issuing marriage licenses to those under eighteen is punishable by a $100 fine. The new law goes into effect on August 22, and will apply to all weddings held and marriage licenses issued from that date on. New York joins Delaware, Minnesota, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island as the only states in the country that do not permit those under eighteen to marry legally.

Career Criminal Arraigned in Child Scooter Theft A Brooklyn man with a long list of prior arrests has been arraigned on multiple charges for dislodging a six-year-old Boro Park boy from an electric scooter he was on and then riding away with it himself. Hamodia reported that 59-year-old Daniel Ufares was arrested on July 19 and arraigned one day later on felony charges of second-degree attempted murder, third-degree robbery and fourth-degree larceny, as well as misdemeanor charges of petit larceny and third-degree menacing. Ufares has a long history of prior crimes and has spent more than a third of his life in jail. He was arrested in 1984 for alleged robbery, for attempting murder in 1989, for assaulting a police officer in 1991, and for second-degree robbery in 2009, serving nine years of a fifteen-year sentence before being released on parole. Since that time, he has been arrested twice for stealing food from supermarkets before the scooter incident took place in early July on 12th Avenue near 36th Street. Police used facial recognition technology to identify Ufares from surveillance video obtained from the scene of the scooter snatching. After being apprehended, Ufares told police that young Simcha Rotenberg voluntarily got off the scooter after being asked where his parents were. Ufares said that he took the boy’s scooter and sold it for $100, using the money to buy drugs. Rabbi Pinchas Rotenberg said that his son was traumatized by the robbery and that while he had been improving, word of

Ufares’s arrest had him growing frightened again. “He’s asking, ‘Are they going to let the man out? Is he going to come after me?’” said Rabbi Rotenberg. Ufares is currently being held on $50,000 bail.

Cuomo Avoids Justice Department Civil Rights Investigation Into COVID-19 Nursing Home Deaths Governor Andrew Cuomo is likely heaving a sigh of relief after a letter released by the Justice Department said that it would not be pursuing a federal civil rights investigation into public nursing home deaths in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Michigan. The Journal News reported that the announcement came after a nearly year-long review of allegations of illegal conditions in state-run residences launched by then-President Donald Trump. It does not affect investigations of private and public nursing homes, which still have Cuomo in the hot seat, as well as probes of two New Jersey facilities. New York City prosecutors are still believed to be investigating Cuomo’s March 2020 policy that forced nursing homes to accept patients who had COVID-19, as well as allegations of severe underreporting of nursing home deaths in the state. The governor is also the subject of two inquiries headed up by Attorney General Letitia James, and the state’s Assembly Judiciary Committee is still continuing its investigation of nursing home failures during COVID-19. Still, state Republican lawmakers were less than pleased with the Justice Department’s decision, with Representative Elise Stefanik calling President Joe Biden “complicit in the criminal corruption scandal and coverup of deaths of thousands of vulnerable seniors.” Nearly 16,000 of the state’s 53,800 COVID-19 deaths in New York State took place in nursing homes.

CHAPTER EIGHTEEN RECAP: Rabbi

Reiness is worried that people have figured out the real reason he’s in Acco and why he doesn’t want to sell. Ariella arrives in Acco and settles in at the Abramovs’, where she’s renting a room. She plans to begin her search for Osher early the next morning.

B

racha and Shulamis sat at the table, peeling carrots for the soup, and Bassi slid a pan into the oven. “That’s it!” she announced gaily. “We’re almost finished. Who wants to go keep the little ones busy? And who wants to put linen on the beds in the shed?” “Who’s sleeping in the shed?” Bracha asked. “Uncle Elazar’s students. Uncle Elazar and Aunt Sarah will sleep in the guest room.” Shulamis went out to make the beds in the shed, which was actually a small caravan. It was connected to the house with a door and had an additional door to the outside. On nice days, Bassi used the shed as a playroom for the children, and on cold days, as a storage room for the endless mountains of laundry waiting for her, sacks of vegetables that Aryeh brought to her from Tzefas, and lots of other things that there was no room for in the house. Shulamis switched on the light. The floor was full of scraps of paper from Gadi’s paper boats. Piles of laundry that had been sitting securely on the old recliner were already spilling over onto the floor, and dozens of Clics and Legos were scattered all over the floor. Only then did Shulamis realize why the toy bins in the house had so few pieces. “Bracha!” she called into the house. “Are you coming to help me clean up in here? There isn’t even room to open the folding beds!” Bracha joined her. “Oh, just move everything to the side,” she said, scratching her forehead. “I’m too exhausted right now to collect all of Gadi’s torn paper boats, and we don’t

need all these toys in the house anyway!” “Ask Mommy if we need to clean up or not,” Shulamis said. “But first, help me move this chair with the laundry over to the side, and let’s pick up whatever clothes fell to the floor.” “Mommy will say that it doesn’t matter,” Bracha informed her. “She always says that the main thing is to greet the guests nicely; the mess doesn’t make a difference.” The closet door was a bit open, and Shulmais tugged at the handle. What was in that box? She peered inside. “Mommy!” she shrieked, jumping away from the closet. “Mommy!!! There’s an… animal here! It looks like a dog, or —” Enough. She wasn’t staying here one minute longer! In a flash, she was out of the shed and back in the warm house. “Mommy, come look at what’s in the closet!” “What’s in there?” Bassi asked from the kitchen, where she was peeling walnuts for the lettuce salad. “An animal, Mommy! There’s an animal in the shed! In a box in the closet!” “Was it sitting on the blankets?” Bassi calmly began checking the walnuts one by one. “No, it was just in the box!” “It must be Gadi’s fox cub, then.” Bassi looked at her daughter. “He found it yesterday and wanted to keep it. I told him to put it in the shed, and then totally forgot about it.” “So he should come and take it out!” Shulamis sat down on a chair in the kitchen and folded her arms. “Mommy, please, tell him to take it out!” “And where should I put it?” asked a voice from the kitchen door. “In your room?” “Gadi!! Mommy, tell him!” “Gadi,” Bassi said, “please, for Shabbos, find another place for your fox. By the way, did you give it anything to eat today?” “Sure! Early this morning, before I ate anything myself!”

GOODBYE, FOREVER! HEAT TREATMENT

THE SUPE RI METH OR FOR BEDOD ERADICATBUG ION

“What does he eat?” asked Nechama, who was sitting on the floor with her younger brothers. She’d been quiet up until now. “You’d rather not know,” her brother replied with a grin. He glanced at Shulamis, who was still scowling. “Do you want to come help me move him away?” “Funny joke,” she snapped. “But don’t you need to go make the beds for our guests anyway?” he asked. “You make the beds, if there are foxes there!” “It’s just one fox — a very small one. A cub, really,” Gadi said. “Come on, Shulamis, since when are you such a scaredy-cat?” “Since I went to the closet in the shed to take out blankets, and almost fainted!” “But now you know about it,” her brother said. “What’s the big deal about coming with me just to see the little fox? He’s so cute… You won’t be sorry!” The little ones began clamoring around Gadi.“We also want to see the fox!” “Sure,” their older brother said magnanimously. Within a few moments, Gadi, Bracha and the little ones were back in the shed. Shulamis stayed where she was. “What happened, sweetie?” her mother asked, still facing the counter. “How did you know I’m here?” Shulamis glanced at her mother in surprise. “You didn’t even look in my direction!” “I felt you,” Bassi joked. “Nu? Why are you so upset?” “I don’t like the smell and the dirt and the mess in our house. Gadi should have understood that we don’t welcome guests like that!” “Nu, so teach him that,” her mother suggested calmly. “You’re very different from him. You have a strong sense of order and cleanliness, and that’s a beautiful thing. Maybe it will rub off on the other kids... Anyway, do you think you can get the kids to clean up the shed? It could be a great activity for them.” * * * * *

When Shlomo and Osher entered the shed two and a half hours later, it was hard to recognize the upsidedown, stuffy caravan of earlier that afternoon. Gadi had been very creative. He’d spread two old quilts over the ironing board and laundry rack, and that concealed a lot of the mess: the laundry chair, the toys, the broken tape recorder, and an assortment of other items that no one had wanted to pick up and put away. In the middle of the room were two beds with floral linen in different shades of green, and between the beds was a plastic chair, on which rested a tray with a few plastic cups, a bottle of water, and a bag of dates. “Medjool,” Shlomo said as he studied the bag. “But where are the snacks Reb Elazar gave us, so that we shouldn’t starve a whole Shabbos with all this vegetarian food?”

The closet door was a bit open, and Shulamis tugged at the handle. What was in that box? She peered inside.

“They’re in the bag behind you,” Osher said. He stood near the narrow blinds, studying the view from the window. “You know, it’s so pretty over here! I would love to go outside, but they’re still in middle of their emotional family reunion out there.” “And I just want to go to sleep.” Shlomo stretched out on one of the beds. “Too bad you didn’t come with me and Matari to the assembly job this morning. That was some job, and another pair of hands wouldn’t have hurt.” “My hands definitely would have hurt…” Osher said. “What did you assemble? The dining room table you finished yesterday?” “Yeah. It wasn’t supposed to be a difficult job; otherwise, Reb Elazar wouldn’t have scheduled its assembly on a day when almost everyone was gone. But for some reason, things got a little complicated.” “It’s funny that they give us an ‘offShabbos,’” Osher mused. “As if it’s a

real yeshivah…” “It wasn’t really like that at first. This off-Shabbos business is a recent thing. But anyway, from the very first off-Shabbos there were always those of us who stayed.” He stuck his hand into the bag of snacks. “When Yeruchem was with us, he always stayed, of course, and Eliyahu also almost always stayed. But this week his uncle invited him for Shabbos.” He riffled through the bag. “This is salty stuff,” he said. “Now I want something sweet. What about you, Osher?” “Nothing. I told you, I just want to go out. Look at that tree!” Shlomo didn’t even glance out the window. “What do you want? This is the Galilee. There are a hundred other trees like that. No, not a hundred, maybe a thousand.” “I think it’s so nice for children to grow up in this kind of a setting.” “But it’s not like they can spend all day outside with the butterflies and the birds, and think about how far they have to travel to get to school each day.” Shlomo lay down on the bed. “They could just not go to school,” Osher said from the window. Then he announced, “Okay, there are only kids outside now; all the adults went in. I think I’ll go out.” “Go.” Shlomo’s eyes were closed. “Wake me up an hour before Shabbos, okay?” Osher didn’t even hear him. He was already outside, examining the tree he liked from top to bottom. “Watch out!” someone exclaimed. “You almost stepped on him!” “Huh?” Osher looked around. “Did I step on anything?” “Yes! My fox!” Osher immediately recognized the energetic kid from the previous Friday, but what the boy said next was so interesting that he couldn’t even dwell on that insulting encounter. “I’m stepping on what?” “Not on what, on who. You’re stepping on my fox!”

Osher Gadi and I sat down on the ground near the fox. “He’s so funny — look at how his

nose is touching the plate! I just hope he doesn’t bite it by mistake, because plastic plates can cut,” Gadi said. “I didn’t know foxes like scrambled eggs,” I said. “I didn’t know, either.” Gadi looked at the fox, which was sniffing the contents of the plate. “But I don’t like them, so I gave him a chance to check it out.” I looked at the fox’s thin tongue. “He’s still a cub. He should probably still be drinking mostly milk.” Gadi was skeptical. “Soy milk and almond milk are really expensive, and my father says it’s bal tashchis to give it to a fox. Anyway, he seems to be managing fine on the food I give him.” “Oh.” I scratched my nose thoughtfully. “Don’t you have regular milk?” “No,” the boy said. “The lactose isn’t healthy.” “And eggs are fine?” “As long as we don’t overdo it,” he said. “Plant-based protein is best. But I have a hard time digesting soy protein, so once in two days I have to eat a hard-boiled egg or an omelet. But I really don’t like eggs.” “It’s a shame that you don’t like eggs,” a voice said from the window. I think it was Gadi’s father. “And it will be an even bigger shame if you have to shower in ice-cold water, Gadi. But anyone who wastes time on Friday afternoon will find that the hot water in the tank has run out...” “Oh, no!” Gadi jumped up. “Hot water comes from the big tank my father built on the roof, and it sometimes gets freezing toward the end of the shower. And I’m always the one who gets there last! Will you watch the fox for me in the meantime, Osher?” “Yes, sure,” I reassured him. “Check that he’s not taking too-big bites that he could choke on, that he doesn’t run to any dangerous places, and that he doesn’t climb the tree.” His expression was so serious I wanted to laugh, but I kept a straight face.

“And if something happens, call me right away, okay?” “No problem.” “And maybe you can think of a name for him, too!” I was left with the fox, which looked at me with what Mommy calls a “steady gaze” before it went back to smelling the grayish omelet in the plastic plate. I think Gadi also has ADHD, like I do. This little woodsy area is probably great for him. In the end, the fox walked away without eating the eggs, and I went back to our room. Someone rapped twice on the door and then entered. It was Reb Elazar. “Is Shlomo sleeping?” he whispered. “Yes,” I replied. “So maybe you should wake him up.” He smiled at me. It was a much calmer smile than I’d seen on him the last day and a half. It looked like

You didn’t daven Mincha yet either, right?” “Right.” Twenty minutes later, I found myself walking to shul together with Shlomo, Reb Elazar, his brother-inlaw Aryeh, and Aryeh’s sons, including Gadi, who’d left the fox wandering near one of the trees. I walked behind the rest of the group, looking around and inhaling the fresh air and smell. I sensed that this Shabbos was going to be much more interesting than I’d first thought. FROM THE SEFER “HAKESER VEHAKAVOD”:

‫בסד‬

“We support and bless those women who have returned to the age-old custom of covering their head with a kerchief instead of a wig in order to satisfy the opinions of all poskim… especially in today’s times when many of the wigs are not in line with the guidelines of tznius.” - letter signed by Harav Shmuel Halevi Wosner, Harav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, Harav Shmuel Auerbach (in the name of his father, Harav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach), Harav Nissim Karelitz, Harav Michal Yehuda Lefkowitz, Harav Nosson Gestetner, Harav Moshe Hager among other rabbanim

Harav Baruch Auerbach zt”l, the son of Harav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach zt”l, related the following episode: “A few years ago, there were many tragedies occurring, such as young people dying, rachmana litzlan. People knew that this was a wake-up call from Hashem to repent, yet they were unsure in which area of avodas Hashem they should strengthen themselves. A group of women decided to ask Harav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach what Hashem was requesting of them. The Rav’s answer was clear and profound: !‫ אלעס זענין די שייטלעך שולדיג‬,‫ לדעתי‬- In my opinion it is due to the sheitels! And then he added: ‫איך מיין‬ !‫ איך מיין די נו ע אויך‬,‫ נישט דוונא די לאנגע‬- I am not referring only to the long ones, I mean the short ones, as well!” - “Adorned with Dignity” by Mrs. Chana Toby Friedman, page 208

Rav Elyashiv zt”l clearly stated that in his opinion it is preferable for a woman to cover her hair with a kerchief rather than a wig. He constantly expressed his concern about the use of wigs that are not modest- a practice which, he says, has made inroads even into the families of pious men and roshei Yeshivah. Maran Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach zt”l expressed the same concern. As he once put it to Rav Dan Segal shlita: “They cover their hair, and then make every effort to make it look uncovered. Therefore, in my opinion this is a loathsome thing. But who can we talk to?” Harav Auerbach also said that, when Mashiach comes, the first thing he’ll do is abolish the use of wigs (as quoted by his son-in-law, shlita). Many halachic authorities and Torah scholars in our time agree with this approach. - “The Unique Princess” by Rabbi Yirmiyahu and Tehilla Abramov, page 105

The sidewalks lined with families strolling on long Shabbos afternoons are telltale signs of shalosh seudos taking place at Bubby’s house. But this scene often only hints at what’s truly going on inside. These gatherings are priceless. They’re where families create their most valued memories, where the marrieds debate the hottest topics over Israeli salad and avocado, where little girls cunningly plan how to persuade their mothers to allow a Motzei Shabbos pajama party while they nibble their peanut butter sandwiches, and where teenagers discuss the intricacies of life while enjoying chocolate filched from Bubby’s never-ending supply. And at the helm of it all is the dear matriarch of the family, basking in the nachas and taking it all in. Including the disarray that follows, that is. Dear bubbies, how do you do this every week? Hosting crowds large enough to fill a sheva brachos hall, transforming your usually orderly home into a hub of sticky, happy crowds. As Shabbos winds down and the tired, adorable and very noisy children make their way out into the starry night, you survey the aftermath, and what do you think?

Bubby K. Shares The Dynamics

Multiple generations join us, including married children, married grandchildren, and many little children, ka”h. The size of the crowd often depends on the weather since some of the families have moved farther out and cannot make it in extreme cold or heat.

The Prep I bake two dozen little bilkelech each week so there should be plenty for lechem mishneh. They’re the perfect size and appreciated by all. One daughter always sends a large challah to slice up, and others contribute with dips. And there’s always seudah leftovers to fall back on. It’s an inyan to eat fish at all three meals, so I always buy herring or lox. As for the salads, some get made “in-house.” The first few adults to show up start slicing, dicing and seasoning from the beautiful variety of fruits and vegetables in the fridge. And some always remember to pitch in with a salad, dessert or dip. All in all, there’s a delicious array of food every week with salads, spreads, fruits and desserts for everyone to enjoy.

90

while, the house is back in order. (Of course, I still find toys and stray crumbs under the couches all week long, but it’s a small sacrifice for the nachas.)

The Policies I tried enforcing policies, but I gave up. The kids are so excited to see each other that they forget all the rules and become preoccupied with one another. I find that it’s more worthwhile to keep the atmosphere pleasant than to police the policies. One smart move I did was lock all of the upstairs bedrooms. The children are allowed to play with toys and games in the playroom, and they clean up before going home.

The Challenge I don’t find hosting a challenge. It’s a tremendous pleasure and nachas observing my einiklech enjoy each other. I do find the children running around with food a bit of a challenge; cleanup is way harder when food is found in all corners. We try to be careful, but it’s a work in progress.

The Aftermath

The Inspiration

A friend once told me, “It takes two weeks to put the house back in order, but I stand at the window every Shabbos longingly waiting for my kids to arrive.” Baruch Hashem, it doesn’t take two weeks to get the house back in order because I have such wonderful children. In fact, they even do a chunk of the Shabbos cleanup. One daughter graciously tackles the sink full of Shabbos dishes, one takes the broom... and within a short

Since we’re a large crowd, it’s important that we learn one halacha of shemiras halashon every week to keep the conversation on the right track. We also share stories or nice thoughts we heard or read during the week. It really lends spirituality to the entire gathering, and it definitely keeps the conversation Shabbos’dig. A highlight is when we all escort the Shabbos together by singing the timeless, poignant G-t fun Avraham.

Bubby E. Shares The Dynamics There are about 40 of us each week. Everyone is included in the excitement: men, women and children. And none of them would miss the weekly gathering for anything!

The Prep Ah! This is Zeidy’s job. As soon as the seudah is cleared away, he settles at the counter and begins preparing the family’s favorites. His famous “red farmer cheese salad” is a weekly winner. (Yes, yes, the one you thought only your family makes.) Nosh and snacks are bought in bulk, literally, and I usually have a nice dessert — a cake, cheesecake or ice cream — for the adults. We set up our large kitchen/family room with extra tables and an abundance of disposables for easy access. I also have a number of highchairs so things can run smoothly and as neatly as possible.

92

Havdalah, and then one of the men takes our car to drop off all the others to get their cars so they can pick up their families waiting outside.

The Aftermath The benefits of having a houseful of girls don’t end when they get married. Cleanup works like a well-oiled machine. As soon as you say, “Ah gutte voch,” the work begins. Tablecloths get folded, dishes are stacked in the dishwasher, the floors get swept and the playroom tidied. On those occasional super-heavy weeks when cleanup is impossible with the little kids around, some of my daughters come back after their children are settled. All in all, it’s a win-win. I gladly host, and my girls gladly clean up.

The Challenge I don’t find it challenging, but I’m sure the walk is hard on some of my kids.

The Schedule

The Policies

As soon as the men arrive, they help themselves to some goodies and head to the dining room with full plates to enjoy some family time. When it’s time for Mincha, the scene is pure nachas! My husband leaves to shul along with all the menfolk and well-fed boys of all ages. Then it’s girls time. Only after all the kids are fed and sent off with nosh and ices do the mothers get a chance to sit down for their brand of oneg Shabbos. It can hardly be called quiet time with so many little ones around, but it’s the quietest possible. These get-togethers are the perfect venue to celebrate milestones. Since everyone is together and the nosh and food are plentiful, we host birthday parties and siyumim where all cousins can easily partake. Motzei Shabbos, we stay for a communal

Kids have to be fed before the mothers. The adults are calmer knowing that their kids ate something healthy before gorging on sugar, and there’s no overcrowding. (Okay, who am I kidding? Of course it’s overcrowded, but this arrangement eases it a bit.) Otherwise, there’s no need for policies. My daughters are extremely thoughtful and on top of their kids. They know that there’s no food allowed in the playroom, and they supervise the children throughout their stay.

The Inspiration We tried. We really did. It’s simply impossible to get everyone seated and quiet at the same time in order to learn something. I usually try to share a nice thought or story, and we steer the conversation clear of lashon hara.

Bubby C. Shares (With Bubby C., we’ll start with The Challenge because that personifies the atmosphere of their shalosh seudos.)

The Challenge I find it challenging when it snows or rains, preventing my children from coming. I grew up without family living close by, and having every single child and grandchild in my house is my greatest pleasure!

The Dynamics We don’t count, ka”h. We have about twelve families most weeks, with many grandchildren, ken yirbu. They all come, winter and summer. It’s especially beautiful because my elderly mother-in-law lives with us and is zoche to see the nachas.

The Prep I bake all the challos, not because I have to, but because I want to. It’s my pleasure. We don’t prepare anything fancy; the food is just plentiful and delicious. I always have commercialsize tuna and mayonnaise cans on hand for tuna and egg salads, which are economical and filling, and I put out some dips and spreads. Sometimes the kids cut up a salad. Our Shabbos specialty is the peanut chews I make with my grandchildren. Each week, two of my grandchildren come over, and we

double and triple the recipe so there’s enough for all the guests.

The Policies I have to see each einikel. I want them to know that they’re not just a number. It’s easy for them to get lost in the shuffle of games, toys, nosh and company, so I implemented a system. I have the snacks and nosh next to me, and only after they come tell me and my mother-in-law “Gut Shabbos” do I give them their treats. It enables me to have a connection with each one. It works so well that even during the week the little ones know to wish me a hearty “Gut Shabbos.”

The Aftermath I don’t want my children to feel pressure. That’s why I don’t let them make anything, and I never pressure them with cleanup, either. The job is overwhelming, and the children are often so tired at the end of the day. However, one of my daughters created a chart listing every conceivable chore, from wiping down the bathrooms, to washing the dishes and cleaning up the toys. It dramatically changed the cleanup to everyone’s benefit. My daughters love the system. They choose their job, they know it’s not a drop in the bucket, and in a short time, the house is back to normal.

The Inspiration This is still on my wish list. It’s hard to learn with so many little kids around. We learn hilchos shemiras halashon during the week, and the halacha l’maaseh takes place during shalosh seudos.

IT WAS

the two-in-one freeze pops that spurred the idea. While unpacking the grocery order on Erev Shabbos, I stood eyeing the case of 40 new pops that I’d put into the wagon on a whim. I started to do the math, estimating how much FD and C my kids would ingest if I’d leave it for the family alone to enjoy. And then I had an idea. Why not organize a chevras Tehillim group? (May as well poison the whole neighborhood, eh?) This sensational treat was definitely fitting enough. And with my husband away for Shabbos, it was the perfect way to break up what was promising to be one long afternoon. Many of my Shabbos afternoon memories come along with the soundtrack of pure voices fervently reciting Tehillim. My father, the exuberant leader, would happily welcome a rambunctious group of neighborhood boys and grandchildren and entertain them lovingly for the better part of an hour. Then, as the program would wind down, we in the kitchen would scoop coneful after coneful of three-color ice cream for all of the participants who would be in a delighted tizzy as they waited in line (push, shove, push, shove) for their treat. It was the week of my father’s second yahrtzeit. Perhaps it was time to put his stack of sifrei Tehillim to use, I thought. Despite the years of teaching under my belt, I did not believe that boys who consider themselves full-fledged men would take kindly to me conducting the program, so after failing to convince one of my nephews to run the show, I went outside to search for some boys who would lead the Tehillim group for me.

I snagged two boys, who at twelve and thirteen years of age respectively, I looked upon as near adults (almost). They seemed thrilled with the honor, got their parents’ permission, and we made up to begin at 4:00. I quickly printed some papers and and my kids excitedly went around inviting one and all (except those disappointed children who were not within our age bracket — or were female!) to join. “Hey, it’s so nice that you’re making a Tehillim group,” my neighbor told me as we met at our shared garbage can an hour to Shabbos, “but I’m wondering about the time. Isn’t everyone asleep at 4:00 p.m.? Don’t you think it’s a little early?” Now considering the fact that this neighbor can actually hear the goings-on in my house when it’s just one person talking, a cacophony of voices wouldn’t even be fair during their Shabbos afternoon nap. There went my “breaking up the afternoon” plan. So my kids visited each home once again, informing all potential participants that 6:00 p.m. it’ll be. But then I bumped into another neighbor after the zman. “We got your flyer. What a beautiful idea! But my kids said you switched to 6:00. Isn’t that, like, really late? I like to take my kids out at that point of the afternoon, and they’re so disappointed that they’ll miss it.” Oh, no. I’d innocently extended an invitation to a group of boys without realizing that boys have mothers and mothers have plans. I ended up leaving my two neighbors to figure it out between themselves, and I headed inside. (Just for the record, it was switched to 5:30, and neighbor A’s son would

arrive, his eyes still bright with sleep.) That first Shabbos group was soul-stirring. The kids, still shyly wonderstruck and obedient, so sweetly and purely recited the Tehillim, their voices ringing throughout the house. I choked up and hoped my father liked what he saw from on High. It felt so right. But as the weeks went by, I realized that gathering a group of children requires a vaad hachinuch to deal with all the dilemmas that came up. If a child is disrupting, but he’s probably the one who needs this outlet and attention most, do I deal with him and make it work, or ask him to kindly stay home? It was these energy-abundant boys whom my father always targeted, the ones who probably were already expelled from other

ly? But he was also super makpid about protecting delicate little egos... And what if a boy is just above the age limit and wants to say some Tehillim? Could I legitimately turn down such a sincere request? And then my leaders started adding excitement by raffling off some of these mega sugar-laden toy treats as incentives. And guess who the winning boy’s parents were horrified with? The lady who started all of this, of course! And slowly the discipline eroded, week after week, and soon I started to realize that there weren’t even that many children who were actually saying the Tehillim, even as the group was getting more robust. When we went away for Shabbos toward the end of the summer, I was given a chance to extricate myself from this mess. I simply informed the neighborhood boys that the group was suspended for the time being. And then when we returned, I sweetly informed them that it was adjourned for the summer, to be reconsidered at a later time. Because I’d realized that I am not my father, and I cannot do what he did. In fact, I’m not even a man, who is the ideal supervisor for enterprises like these! Maybe one day, when my little boys grow up, they will prove to have the leadership qualities their grandfather had, and we will revisit the idea. But until then, there’s a stack of Tehillims waiting to be lovingly read, waiting to be turned by eager little fingers on summer Shabbos afternoons.

WE would scoop coneful after coneful of three-color ice cream for all of the participants who would be in a delighted tizzy as they waited in line for their treat. groups… I just couldn’t exclude them. If a too-young child was given the chance to read (my “leaders” had a hard time accepting that I’d appointed them to recite the Tehillim, and not to look on importantly in their quasi-adult way and let new readers stumble over the text), was I to step in to correct him, or let it slide and not embarrass him? Was this an ilui nishmas at all, if my father was always super makpid about Tehillim being read correct-

During the long summer Shabbos afternoons, it is beautiful to observe how Yidden everywhere set aside time to recite Pirkei Avos. Parents can be found sitting side by side with their children, saying the perakim together. Men can be seen walking to the beis midrash to hear a Pirkei Avos shiur, or they can be found sitting and reciting the current week’s perek at home. The Nesivos Sholom explains that we learn Pirkei Avos during the summer because this is the time of year when we need it most. In fact, we begin after Pesach, during the time that we prepare for Kabbalas HaTorah. This period is when we traditionally focus on personal growth and on developing our middos, since good middos are essential for connecting to the Torah. It is interesting to note that we begin Pirkei Avos by reciting the mishnah from Sanhedrin, which states that every Yid has a portion in Olam Haba. Why did Chazal put this mishnah here, as an introduction to discussing what middos tovos look like?

The Pupa Rav shared the following story from Sifsei Tzaddikim*: The holy Apter Rav related that once, when Rebbe Elimelech of Lizhensk was staying with him, the Apter Rav gave him his own private room. When the Apter Rav came into the room at one point during the stay, he found Reb Elimelech sitting and calculating whether he would be worthy of Olam Haba. Reb Elimelech was talking to himself, saying, “My soul, my soul! You are simply not worthy of the Next World!” He listed all of his shortcomings and then tried to console himself, saying, “Why, even if it is true that you are not worthy of

Olam Haba, nonetheless, the Holy One, in His great mercy and kindness, will grant you Olam Haba! After all, Chazal teach us that the Holy One fulfills the entire Torah Himself. Hashem performs acts of kindness and charitable deeds. However, since the Next World is purely spiritual, what type of tzedakah can Hashem possibly give? The tzedakah He gives is that He grants Olam Haba even to those who are unworthy!” The Pupa Rav concludes, saying: “This is how Reb Elimelech consoled himself. What can we say?” While it is comforting to remember that Hashem does “charitable deeds” and gives all of us a portion in Olam Haba, it is still not clear why this must be stated at the beginning of Pirkei Avos. Perhaps the answer is that Chazal wanted to give us chizuk before we begin learning about how our middos are supposed to be. After all, we may become discouraged when we learn Pirkei Avos and realize what a long way we still have to go. However, we must know that we cannot give up, only always remember that, as Yidden, we must strive to exhibit proper behavior at all times. The words “Kol Yisroel yesh lahem chelek...” convey a powerful lesson. We must always remember that we are Yisroel, and as such, we must behave differently. If we always remember how we must behave, that awareness alone will allow us to be zoche to have a part in Olam Haba. Then, as we continue to learn what it means to be a Yid, our Olam Haba will expand. It is interesting to note that this section of Mishnayos is called Pirkei Avos — Chapters of Our Forefathers. Of course, the rest of Mishnayos and Gemara are also part of our mesorah — part of the teaching of our ancestors that can be traced all the way to Moshe Rabbeinu. If so, why is only this attributed to our Avos? Klal Yisroel exists only because of the mesorah of our Avos Hakdoshim, which we carry with us from generation to generation. By naming this section Pirkei Avos, Chazal teach us that these lessons of Pirkei Avos, of middos that a Yid must develop, is the most valuable part of the Torah from our Avos and is crucial for our continued existence. After all, Pirkei Avos is a collection of our greatest values. Without these values, we cannot become the Yidden we are meant to be. When we understand that Pirkei Avos is the guide that teaches us the values of a Yid, we can learn it with the proper perspective. Instead of simply viewing these perakim as nice teachings of Chazal, we should regard it with the necessary seriousness and understand that this must guide our life’s work. In the Kuntres Nesivei Chinuch it is written that in order for our children to have better middos, we need to talk to them

Pirkei Avos is a collection of our greatest values. Without these values, we cannot become the Yidden we are meant to be. about middos. For example, we must discuss how bad kaas, kinah and taavos are. Helping our children develop an awareness of the importance of good middos will alert them to be careful about their behavior and develop good middos as they grow up. Additionally, we must make it a focus in our lives to find the time to work on our middos in a practical way. Reb Elimelech M’Lizhensk writes that the words “Adam l’amal yulad — A person was born to work” refers to the work we must do on our middos. Working on our middos is another powerful way for us to demonstrate to our children how important it is for a Yid to behave appropriately. One mitzvah in the Torah tells us to remember what Amalek did to Klal Yisroel when they were leaving Mitzrayim. However, we are also told to “wipe out the memory” of Amalek. What is the Torah teaching us with these contradicting commandments? The meforshim explain that the pasuk “Asher korcho baderech” (Devarim 25:18) means that Amalek brought “krirus” — coldness of emunah — to Klal Yisroel. Thus, the Torah is teaching us to remember this “krirus,” to remember to stay alert and recall what this coldness can do to us. However, this is not enough! We must also practically wipe away any of these “krirus” by constantly filling ourselves with the warmth of our values as a Yid. By learning the wisdom of Chazal, we fulfill the mitzvah of mechias Amalek, because the primary objective is to bring warmth and growth into our daily reality. When we constantly work on developing our middos in real and practical ways, we can work on becoming the Yisroel we are meant to be — the Yid with values that will allow him to merit a portion in the Next World. * Taken with permission from Returnity by Rabbi Tal Moshe Zwecker, chassidusonline@gmail.com. GOVERNORS ISLAND

Its history stretches beyond that of neighboring Manhattan and New York itself. Among the many islands in the New York Harbor, no other boasts the rich military and public service past of Governors Island. 106

If real estate is all about location, location, location, then it’s hard to think of a property more strategically located than Governors Island. Sitting just over a thousand feet from Brooklyn’s waterfront and just a little farther from lower Manhattan, the island served as the center of action from as far back as half a millennia ago. New Yorkers are most familiar with Governors Island in its current capacity as an attractive park where they can sneak away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Over three quarters of a million people visit the island annually, which is an impressive count for an attraction that opened to the public formally only in 2005. But the island has meant so much more for so much longer. Just its name, a moniker it has held since the late 1600s (first with an apostrophe and later without), speaks to its prominence in New York’s early days as the exclusive property of colonial governors. In 2002, when the future of the island was up in the air, the New York State Legislature passed a resolution

control in the 1660s and 1670s, renaming it New York. They designated the island for the private use of the colonial governors. The island was utilized by the governors in various capacities — some even leased it out to turn a profit — but not as a permanent residence. Yet as prominent as it was to the British before, it played an even bigger role when war broke out with England.

MILITARY HISTORY “to recognize the official place and date of birth of the State of New York as being Governors Island in the year 1624.”

IN THE EARLY DAYS The 172-acre land, like others around the city, was originally much smaller in size but was expanded through the use of landfill in the early 1900s. The Native Americans called it Paggank, a name referring to the nut trees on the island, and it was later translated into Noten Eylandt and Nutten Island before it got the name it carries to this day. In the early 1600s, Henry Hudson, working for the Dutch, reported on the resource-rich areas in the region. This led to the Dutch settling of New Netherland along the Eastern Seaboard. The first stop was Governors Island when, in 1624, 30 families arrived to settle it. They soon made the short move to Manhattan Island, which was more suitable for development. Nutten Island would become a small part of the Dutch colony known as New Amsterdam. New Amsterdam was in Dutch hands until the British took

The strategic setting of Governors Island in the New York Harbor made it a natural military objective for the Continental Army and the British forces. In the first year of the Revolutionary War, George Washington’s fighters were forced to withdraw from the island. At that point, the British took control of the land, further solidifying the island’s military defenses. They held on to the island, and the rest of what was then New York City, for eight long years — until after the end of hostilities. In the following decades, the young country built defenses to protect its coasts and major cities. Governors Island became the site of a number of fortifications leading up to the War of 1812. The fortifications never ended up seeing battle, though it is suggested that they successfully served as deterrents convincing the British to only blockade, rather than enter, the New York Harbor. In the years after those early wars, the island transitioned to other forms of nondefensive military service. These included administrative and training purposes like recruitment, a mustering point where soldiers were inspected before leaving for battle, as well as a muni-

By 1878, the island had developed into major army headquarters, charged with coordinating army activities for the entire eastern United States. It also turned into a space where families of those stationed there could live full time. The island featured residential and recreational amenities, including a gym, public school, religious centers, golfing and everything one would come to expect from an upscale neighborhood. The island’s prominence and proximity to New York City turned it into a prestigious center for military and social life. Those posted there would often go on to advance into more senior roles in the U.S. Army. The island came into the limelight once again when it was the site of Wilbur Wright’s first flight over water in 1909, where he took off and landed on a newly built airstrip. During both world wars the island played a central role in the U.S. Army activities. World War I saw significant development on the island as the army utilized it to store war material and accommodate troops. The powerful First Army division was later headquartered there, and these troops were the ones who planned and led the Normandy invasion on Europe’s shores a few decades later. In the 1960s, the military began cutting down

In 1909, aviation pioneer Wilbur Wright took the world’s momentous first flight over water from Governors Island.

the number of posts and installations it had around the country. Governors Island was among the many that got the ax. The Coast Guard submitted a request to take over the installations, and upon doing so in 1966, did not take long to turn it into the largest coast guard base in the world. They remained there until 1996, after which the island gracefully retired from over two centuries of military service.

PUBLIC USE As with other islands around the city, various plans for how Governors Island could be utilized for the public good were discussed. One plan, suggested nearly 100 years ago, called for building an airport on the island. Another suggested building a bridge from Brooklyn to Manhattan with a ramp onto the island. Today, the ventilation building for the Battery Tunnel is situated right near the island and can be accessed via a short connecting road. Governors Island is part of the borough of Manhattan and can be visited only via ferry from Manhattan and Brooklyn. A scenic waterfront promenade surrounds the island, which has managed to fuse its historic charm with the amenities of an inviting modern park. One section, called The Hills, features four large hills 26 to 70 feet high, built with rubble from old, demolished buildings. The island also features

open picnic areas, tree-lined parks and bike riding, among many other attractions, and an area with dozens of tree species and comfortable hammocks called Hammock Grove. An added bonus are the many impressive buildings still in use as exhibits or for the island’s contemporary operations. When New York moved to recognize Governors Island as the official birthplace of New York, it noted that the island’s early settlers were the first to implement the American ideals of tolerance and inclusion. A local editorial at the time mentioned a 1657 New Netherland document stating that “the law of love, peace and liberty” also extends to “Jews, Muslims and Gypsies” in New Amsterdam (New York City). Hundreds of years later, the island has come full circle, providing locals and immigrants of all backgrounds with an opportunity to enjoy New York at its very best.

One, Two and… Three! It’s the end of the day, and many of us are still full from the daytime meal. Perhaps we can “get away” without washing again? When we eat shalosh seudos despite being full and perfectly okay without more food, we indicate that the other meals were also dined in honor of Shabbos alone. With the third, we are rewarded for all three meals. The Tur states that “everyone who partakes in three meals [on Shabbos] is protected from three hardships: chevlei Moshiach, Gehinnom, and Milchemes Gog u’Magog.”

Peak of the Peak! Ra’va d’ra’vin — it’s the “retzon haretzonos”! These are the most auspicious moments of the week, when Hashem reveals His boundless desire for Klal Yisroel, the Zohar says. The sun is setting, Shabbos is about to bid us farewell. It’s a time of inimitable opportunity. It is a time when we can ask for everything we need, both spiritually and physically. These moments are so potent because this is the precise timing when Hakadosh Baruch Hu began to plan the creation of the world — which commenced on Motzei Shabbos, the beginning of yom rishon.

Time for Teshuvah Shalosh seudos is demarcated as a time for teshuvah. Chassidim of old would tell how it felt similar to Yom Kippur at the shalosh seudos tish of their rebbes. Reb Menachem Mendel of Kotzk said that the motivation to repent at this time stems from the fact that it isn’t a time to be learning.

Why in Shul? Many seforim quote the great potency of singing zemiros together and listening to divrei Torah as one, traced back to the example set by the Baal Shem Tov. Indeed, this has become the norm in many chassidishe circles.

Shalosh Seudos Torah The Zohar brings down that one should not set a learning schedule for after Mincha, because this is the time when Moshe Rabbeinu passed away. Still, in many courts, it is customary to say divrei Torah during this meal. Reb Yitzchok Isaac of Ziditchev commented that “Our divrei Torah are tefillos,” as they stimulate yeshuos for Klal Yisroel.

118

The Boro Park View

In the Dark In many rebbishe courts, it became accepted to have shalosh seudos without light. As a time for teshuvah, it may be easier for anyone who wants to cry if it is dark. In addition, neshamos from Gan Eden come down to hear the divrei Torah, and if they were to see the light of this world, it would become dark for them.

Zemiros Food

The Avudraham called this time appropriate for zemiros and pirkei Tehillim, much as a kallah or queen is escorted with song. Reb Itzikel of Skver, zt”l, was once in Ukraine for Shabbos. A Russian officer stood on a bench, guarding the door all Shabbos long. During shalosh seudos, the Rebbe sang the zemiros with deep concentration. When he came to the words “Baruch Hu Elokeinu shebera’anu lichvodo,” he paused. Just then the Russian officer was overcome with such fear that he fell off the bench while calling out, “A pious Jew! A pious Jew!”

Some tuna and salad, perhaps cut-up fruit. Somehow, shalosh seudos means simple fare, served in haste. But seforim say it is preferable to prepare special foods for this meal, and many assert that fish should be eaten, according to Kabbalastic reasons.

* * * * * While in self-imposed exile, Reb Zusha and Reb Elimelech met an outstanding young boy, later to become Reb Dovid of Lelov, zt”l. They decided to visit the boy’s parents in Biala. How were his simple parents granted such a holy son? they wondered. Reb Dovid’s mother told them that every Shabbos during shalosh seudos, when her husband reached the words, “V’yizku lir’os banim u’vnei banim oskim baTorah uv’mitzvos,” he would cry and beg Hashem to grant him a son who would be a tzaddik. He would cry until he collapsed. The two Rebbes were amazed and said, “If so, we understand how you merited to raise such a lofty neshamah!”

Tosafos Shabbos SHOVING OUT THE GUEST? When we prolong shalosh seudos and delay performing melachah once the zman of Motzei Shabbos arrives, we demonstrate our deep, inner love and regard for Shabbos Kodesh. According to Kabbalah, women should be even more careful with tosafos Shabbos than men. A GOLDMINE OF BLESSINGS The seforim cite countless brachos from which we can benefit if we generously extend our Shabbos rather than rush out the moment we can. The Geulah, children, yiras Shamayim, success, salvation… and more! “If the baalei batim would listen to me, they would add a large tosafos to Shabbos, and they would have an abundance of parnassah all week long,” – Rav Mordechai of Lechovitz (1742–1810)

“One who adds to Shabbos, Hashem will add to his life, and grant him wealth and honor.” – Chavas Yair (Rav Yair Chaim Bachrach, 1639-1702)

“Whoever extends Shabbos into the weekday will certainly have hatzlacha.” – Chida (1724–1806)

“Be careful with tosafos Shabbos, and alert others to do the same. In this zechus you’ll become a father.” – Arizal to someone who hadn’t yet merited children (1534–1572)
