TEITELBAUM INSURANCE
(Re: Cover, Issue 95) Thank you for your weekly publication. In regard to this past week’s cover, it seems that the depiction is of a boy saying Tehillim against this beautiful backdrop on Shabbos (though perhaps it’s Erev Shabbos). As such, I’d like to point out that leaning on a tree is assur on Shabbos. Thank you, and keep up the good work. Rabbi Friedman
IT’S MUKTZAH!
(Re: A Try at a Tehillim Group, Issue 95) Thank you for a lovely read! It was heartwarming to hear from someone who attempted to put together a Tehillim group, no matter how it went down in the end. Reading the story brought to mind what I once witnessed on a Shabbos afternoon. Some neighborhood kids were walking home from a local Tehillim group, and as I stood outside, I noticed that my nextdoor neighbor’s son, who was lucky enough to win a prize that week, was carrying home a remote-controlled car with glee. On Shabbos. Please, adults! I know you’ve got great intentions, but we don’t want our children unintentionally being mechalel Shabbos. If you’re purchasing prizes that are muktzah, please remember to distribute them after Shabbos. A Tehillim Group Participant’s Mother

YOUR VOICE MY SUPPLIES SHOPPING SAGA
Knit
I know many of you don’t want to hear this yet, but school is around the corner, and for me, with my house full of girls, ka”h, shopping for school supplies looms large on my list. However, year after year, I find that the supplies lists, with all of the specifications I wouldn’t dare to ignore, arrive stressfully close to the start of school. I know many are still in the country at this point, but that’s precisely why I want to do my shopping now — before the masses join me on the shopping scene. Another issue regarding school supplies that has caused me, as well as others, so much aggravation is that after all that careful shopping — down to the inch, the pocket number, and the preferred brand of pencil — the sigh of relief I breathe is always premature. Because every year, in walks a daughter (or three) after the first day of school with a supplies list from her teacher that contains items that were not on the school’s list (and excludes items that were on the list, but that’s a rant for another time). Dear school administrative staff and teachers, I know this time of year is impossibly hectic, but please, please make sure your lists match up so that we don’t have to waste both time and money outfitting our children for the new school year. Thank you, T.B. THE BORO PARK VIEW WELCOMES YOUR COMMENTS, FEEDBACK AND LETTERS.

PARSHAS RE’EH Give and Get
The mitzvah of giving tzedakah is mentioned in this week’s parsha. “Nason titein lo, v’lo yeira levavecha b’sitcha lo... — You shall give him, and your heart should not feel bad when you give...” (Devarim 15:10). Some people are natural givers. But how can every person be on the level of giving tzedakah generously, wholeheartedly, without feeling even a tad uneasy about relinquishing his hard-earned money? YOU HAVE TO BE A watch collector to understand the thrill of a timepiece catch. Valuable pieces can rack up quite a sum, and collectors are ready to spend thousands on rare and historical watches. That’s why Mr. Halpern, from the well-known Halpern family in Eretz Yisroel, was excited to discover a particular watch on sale. It was rare, exclusive and of superior quality, and 200,000 shekels seemed like a bargain for a watch of this caliber. His bid was accepted, and he was told it would be a three-month wait before the watch would arrive. Finally, the day came, and Mr. Halpern was set to go pick up his treasure. With the cash prepared, he anticipated placing his hands on the coveted watch at last. But before he had a chance to leave his home, he received a call from a friend. “Did you hear about the fire?” the man asked, and he went on to detail the latest tragedy. What started out as an electrical short brought down an entire home! There was a poor family left without a roof over their heads. No furniture, no clothes, no possessions. “Could you imagine?” his friend asked. “They hardly had much to begin with. Now they have nothing!” Thankfully, the family members all escaped without injury, but it would cost the family 400,000 shekels to get back on their feet. Mr. Halpern understood the purpose of his friend’s call. And he knew something his friend didn’t even know. At

that very moment, he had 200,000 shekels cash in his pocket. He could pay off half of this family’s loss. A debate began to rage in his heart. The watch is practically mine. I waited three months for it. Am I obligated to give up my dream to help this unfortunate family? Perhaps if I give them a donation of a few thousand shekels it would be enough. Must I shoulder the bulk of their burden? On the other hand, how could I enjoy my new luxury knowing that its value could have covered 50% of a stricken family’s loss? What should I do?! The intense emotions roiled inside as Mr. Halpern struggled to decide. It was truly a hard call. Long moments passed as a silent internal battle overtook him. Every time he envisioned his magnificent watch, the image of a roofless family flitted before his eyes. The watch? Or a poor family? With overwhelming strength, Halpern made up his mind. He checked with the watch seller. He was still able to back out of the deal. Next, Mr. Halpern reached out to his brother and had him match his donation. Together, they forwarded the full sum the family desperately needed. Time passed. Some three years later, at the end of November 2016, catastrophic fires broke out in the yishuv of Beis Meir, the hometown of the Halpern family. It began in the forests

around town and then made its way inside, devouring everything in its path. Cars, gardens and entire homes went up in flames. The entire community was evacuated. Mr. Halpern happened not to be home at the time, but his wife and children were, and they fled along with everyone else, without a chance to take a last backward glance at their home. For two and half days, the fire and rescue teams worked to extinguish the blaze. When they were finally given permission to return, the townspeople discovered the scope of the damage. Dozens of homes had gone up in smoke, and remarkably, only one stood hale and hearty: the Halperns’. The fire had swallowed the home on the right, the home on the left, and the houses across the street. Only their home remained wholly unscathed. The largest damage they suffered were faint scorch marks that could be detected on the gates around their property. People gathered to see the curious sight. The fires had discriminately hopped over this spot. How one house managed to remain complete in spite of the total destruction was beyond belief. It was clear proof that helping another family that experienced fire damage was their personal fire insurance, saving their own home years later.
en t s i L It was truly a hard call. Long
moments passed as a silent internal battle overtook him.
* * * * * The Dubno Maggid explained the pasuk “Nason titein lo” with the following parable: While walking on the street, a man loses his wallet that contained 100 rubles. The next day, he finds a wallet on the ground. Inside it is 200 rubles. The man is very happy; after all, he got back double. Still, he isn’t completely comforted over the loss of his original wallet. In the back of his mind, he still feels that he could have had 300 coins now, had he not lost his wallet. Another fellow walks across the field holding a sack of grain. To his dismay, he discovers that there was a hole in the sack, and along the route, he lost much of the grain. A while later, when this man visits the field, he finds that his grain had sprouted, and that now there is a field full of wheat! He doesn’t agonize over the lost grain; to the contrary! He knows that had the grain remained in his sack, there wouldn’t be this lush field today. With the right mindset, it becomes clear that there is no reason for negative feelings when dispensing of one’s assets. We realize that giving doesn’t make us any poorer. Rather, everything we have comes because we share, as the pasuk concludes, “...B’glal hadavar hazeh yevarechecha Hashem Elokecha bechol ma’asecha u’vechol mishlach yadecha — ...because of this, Hashem will bentch you in all of your work and all of your endeavors.”
Did You Know? The numerical value of “ ”עניis 130; the value of “ ”עשירis 580. The difference is 450, which is the numerical value of “תן.” Give to the pauper and he will eventually be on his feet, just like the rich man.

CHAPTER 19 RECAP: Shabbesai Tzvi travels to Yerushalayim, where he delivers Refael Yosef Chelebi’s money. The Yerushalmi Yidden heap upon them honor and gratitude. Shabbesai Tzvi marries Sarah, whose immodesty surprises many, and the celebrations do not cease, turning wild and replete with drunkards.
S
habbesai Tzvi and Sarah lived in the House of Chelebi for many months. Shabbesai Tzvi remained in partial seclusion and continued to do many strange and bizarre acts. The movement soon degenerated into a series of lavish parties. Nothing more was to be gained by remaining in Cairo, but no other place beckoned. In time, Shabbesai Tzvi became depressed again and withdrew into seclusion. He fasted for many days and waited for a sign from Heaven. When none was forthcoming, he sank deeper into depression. Once again, he felt the forces of darkness crowding in around him, threatening to devour him if he let down his guard even for an instant. As the battle grew more intense, the anguished cries in the night of the tormented Shabbesai Tzvi would float down from the open windows of his room. The people in the courtyard below would interrupt their celebrations to whisper to each other that these were the sounds of the evil forces of the kelipah making their last desperate stand against the invincible power of Moshiach. The final victory was surely at hand. And then the celebrations would resume, stronger than before.

In the winter of 1664, Diego Vargas returned to Cairo with stories of a young man known as the Soul Healer of Gaza. It was said that by using Kabbalah, the young man could identify the root of each person’s soul, and if it needed healing, he could prescribe a regimen to cleanse it of its illness. It was also said that the young man demanded great sums of money for his services. Shabbesai Tzvi listened to Vargas with great interest and asked many questions. That evening, he reached a decision. Emotionally exhausted, he planned to meet the Soul Healer of Gaza. Shabbesai Tzvi insisted on making the journey on his own. He joined a caravan of Arab traders traveling to Syria along the northern coast of the Sinai Desert. Shabbesai Tzvi dressed as a simple traveler and kept to himself. No one took notice of him during the journey, or when he remained behind in Gaza with his single piece of baggage. The Soul Healer lived in an adobe house on a dusty, crumbling side street. A single scraggly palm tree with drooping leaves stood wearily over the clustered roofs of the neighborhood. Shabbesai Tzvi was shown into a spacious room in the back of the house, and a
young man with pale eyes and a sparse blond beard stood in the center of the room. “Welcome to my home,” said the young man. “Although you are dressed as an ordinary traveler, I can see on your face that you’re not at all like my other visitors. The holiness and greatness of your soul shines through. It is clearly from Heaven that you have come here. My name is Nattan Halevi, also known as Nattan Haazati. May I ask what yours is?” “I am Shabbesai Tzvi.” “Ah, it is as I thought. Something inside me told me it was you,” cried Nattan, neglecting to mention that he had often watched Shabbesai Tzvi from afar in Yerushalayim. “Your fame spreads farther across the face of the earth with each passing day. I’m deeply honored. You sanctify the walls of my home with your presence.” Shabbesai Tzvi dismissed these compliments with a casual wave of his hand. “I’m glad to see you’ve recognized me by looking into my soul. The power of sight is the most important tool for healing. Who taught you the Kabbalah?” “I am a disciple of Rav Yaakov Chagiz.” Shabbesai Tzvi raised his eyebrows at the mention of the elderly rabbi’s name. He looked at Nattan suspiciously. “Then I’m sure you must have heard him mention my name.” “Indeed, I did,” said Nattan, “but
nonetheless, I’m not against you. I’ve heard of your teachings from other people and found them intriguing. I also heard of the vision you related in Constantinople. I’ve thought about it and gained many insights. I have much to learn from you and would have come to see you long ago, but my rabbi had forbidden it. I am grateful to the Almighty for bringing you to my doorstep.” Shabbesai Tzvi nodded. “If you are willing to learn, I’m willing to teach you. But first, you must help me heal my soul.” “What can I do for you that you cannot do for yourself? Why have you come to me?” “Because a person cannot see his own wounds as well as another can.1 And also because you have the ability to see the root of the soul and recognize its blemishes.” Nattan nodded gravely. “This closely guarded secret was revealed to me by my rabbi on the condition that I never reveal it to anyone else. Why do you think your soul needs healing?” “Because it’s tortured and in pain,” said Shabbesai Tzvi. “Listen to me. Even as a small child, I knew I was different. As I grew older, I had visions and dreams in which the Almighty revealed to me that it is my destiny to redeem our people from exile and rebuild Yerushalayim and the Beis Hamikdash, that I am Moshiach, the anointed king of the Jewish people. “I’ve wandered from city to city, from country to country, gathering disciples and followers and teaching them in private. From time to time, after much thought and consideration, I’ve revealed my secret powers by uttering the Shem Hameforash in public. For an ordinary person this would have been a horrific sin, but I’m Moshiach, holier than the Kohein Gadol. These barriers are not meant for me. My actions brought me followers, but they brought me even more enemies, especially among the rabbis. They couldn’t see that I was different, and they persecuted me. “I’ve been struggling for over fifteen years, and I still do not see the end in sight. For a while, I saw my saving the people of Yerushalayim from the qadi’s tax as a sign from Heaven that the time had come for me to reveal myself. But nearly a year has passed, and Heaven has ignored me. I fear I’ve angered the Almighty by being hasty to reveal my powers to the people. I fear I might have desecrated the holy Shem Hameforash. I fear I’ve blemished the holy soul entrusted to me by the Almighty. I want you to look at the blemishes of my soul, my dear Nattan, and prescribe a regimen for me. You are the Soul Healer. Heal me.” Nattan had sat forward to listen to Shabbesai Tzvi’s story, his elbows resting on the table, his hands touching each other fingertip to fingertip. Brows knitted in intense concentration, he remained in this position long after Shabbesai Tzvi had finished. Finally, Nattan shook his head in wonder. “I’d like to ask a few simple questions first,” he said respectfully. “Ask whatever you wish.” “Thank you. When were you born?” “On Tisha B’Av of the year 1626.” “What is your father’s name?” “Mordechai.” “And your mother’s name?” “Esther.” “Where were you born?” “In Smyrna.” “How old were you when you had your first vision?” “Seven years old. I had the vision you mentioned before.” “And this vision was followed by others?” “Many others.” “Why do you think the rabbis are opposed to you?” “Because they refuse to accept my teachings,” Shabbesai Tzvi said. “They can-

I’ve been struggling for so many years with no real progress.” “But you’ve found success in Cairo, haven’t you?” “It cannot end in Cairo. I must go on. But where? Constantinople? No. The time is not ripe to take the crown from the sultan’s head. Yerushalayim? Still too much opposition among the rabbis. But how long can I stay in Cairo? What am I to do? I’ve pleaded for a sign from Heaven, a small hint to what I must do now. But there’s no answer. Only silence. I sense the presence of a solid wall between me and my destiny, and I fear it’s because I’ve blemished my holy soul.” “What if I cannot heal your soul?” Nattan asked. “What do you mean?” “If it’s indeed as you say, that you’ve blemished your soul, perhaps it will be impossible to cleanse it. A soul as delicately pure as yours can be easily damaged almost beyond repair.” Shabbesai Tzvi shivered. “Then I’ll beg the Almighty’s forgiveness and ask Him to end my torment,” he said in a distant voice. “I’ll ask Him to take away my illuminated states and let me live the rest of my years as an ordinary man.” “Are you actually prepared to abandon your mission?” Shabbesai Tzvi stared hard at the Soul Healer for a long time before he answered in a choked voice. “I’m prepared to abandon my mission,” he said defiantly, as if to convince himself as well, “if that’s the will of the Almighty. If my faults and shortcomings have rendered me incapable of fulfilling my mission, then it must be entrusted to someone more capable.” “Are you prepared to die?”
“I don’t understand. Why should I be prepared to die if to fulfill my mission I must live?” Nattan Haazati pursed his lips and nodded. “I must give this much thought before I dare say anything to you. You must be weary from your journey. Why don’t you lie down for a while and get some sleep? Perhaps when you awaken we will talk further.” “Very well, Nattan. A bed will be most welcome, but don’t let me sleep more than one half-hour.” Shabbesai Tzvi had been asleep for only a very short while when he was awakened by an insistent tug at his shoulder. “Wake up!” called Nattan. “Wake up! I have something very important to tell you.” Shabbesai Tzvi was instantly awake. Fighting back his weariness, he washed his hands and splashed some water onto his face. Nattan was pacing back and forth, hardly able to contain his excitement. “I have had a revelation!” he exclaimed. “After you went to sleep, it came to me in a sudden blinding flash. Everything became perfectly clear. All my questions, all your questions, they all just vanished before the light.” “What are you saying?” “I kept thinking about what you said, about how you’ve been struggling so long with so little progress, when suddenly I realized that something very important had been missing. You had no one to direct your movement. If you were supposed to be a king, didn’t you need a prime minister, a grand vizier? Then suddenly it came to me. You are indeed Moshiach, and I, Nattan Haazati, am Eliyahu Hanavi. It is my mission to proclaim the coming of Moshiach to the world, and until I do what is required of me. The movement will not flourish. It is clear as the midday sun. There is no blemish on your soul. Your destiny awaits your prophet.” To be continued…

Vaccination Mandates Begin as COVID-19 Surges Again With COVID-19 rates once again ticking up as the highly contagious Delta variant continues to spread, government officials at multiple levels are pulling out the stops in an effort to boost vaccination rates. The Associated Press reported that President Joe Biden announced last Thursday that federal workers will have a choice of either signing forms saying that they have been vaccinated or will have to undergo mandatory masking, weekly COVID-19 testing and distancing protocols, among other measures. The move impacts 4 million federal employees as well as nearly 7 million employees of other companies who contract with the federal government. According to the president, the vast majority of people who are contracting the Delta variant are unvaccinated. Biden noted that unvaccinated individuals create health risks for others, endanger the country’s economy, and jeopardize the longawaited return to relative normalcy. “It is an American blessing that we have vaccines for each and every American,” said Biden. “It’s such a shame to squander that blessing.” Governor Andrew Cuomo followed the president’s lead, declaring that all state employees will be required to either be vaccinated by Labor Day or be subject to weekly testing. Vaccines will be mandatory for patient-facing health care workers at state-run hospitals who will not have the testing option available to them. Cuomo blamed the Delta variant for the new rules, saying that vaccination rates aren’t keeping pace with the new COVID-19 strain. “This virus has always been unpredictable, and in the face of the Delta variant, our hard-won progress is only as good as our determination to build on it,” Cuomo said on Sunday. “The vaccine is free, safe and effective, and our strongest weapon in this ongoing fight. If you are still unvaccinated, you remain vulnerable, and it is critical that you get your shot as quickly as possible.” In New York City, where the seven-day daily average of positive COVID-19 cases has doubled over the last month, Mayor Bill de Blasio sweetened the deal, offering $100 to any city resident who gets their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. The city announced plans to require all municipal workers, including teachers and police officers, to be vaccinated by mid-September or face weekly COVID-19 tests. “This is about our recovery,” said de Blasio. “This is about what we need to do to bring back New York City. This is about keeping people safe.” Directing a message to the city’s Jewish community last week, de Blasio laid out a vaccination timetable to coincide with the upcoming yomim tovim, telling people that they needed

to get their first dose of the Pfizer vaccine by August 2 in order to be fully protected in time for Rosh Hashanah. “If there’s going to be any kind of family gathering, it’s so important to get vaccinated and keep everyone safe, particularly our elders, and we want to protect our kids,” noted the mayor.
Catskills Girls’ Camp Fire Sparks Tidal Wave of Chesed Dozens of tenth grade girls escaped injury when their bunkhouse went up in flames in an early morning fire, prompting a heartwarming response from community members near and far. The fire took place on Erev Shabbos Nachamu in Camp Na’aleh, Bobov 45’s girls camp, located in Livingston Manor, reported Hamodia. One camper woke up at approximately 7:30 in the morning and saw smoke and sparks shooting out of an electrical appliance. She woke up her bunkmates, and all of the girls in bunks 12A and 12B managed to escape safely, with the building engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived on scene. One of the bunkhouse’s 20 bedrooms was completely destroyed in the fire, while another adjoining one was damaged. Once the fire had been extinguished and everyone was accounted for, the girls were relocated to a staff bunk, and a trailer was brought in to house the staff members who gave up their lodgings. With Shabbos just hours away, the camp focused its attention on another pressing need — helping the girls replace their possessions, all of which had been destroyed in the fire. Families in nearby bungalow colonies sent linens and snacks, and one person driving down from the city to the Catskills on Friday afternoon brought packages parents had put together for their daughters. Assistant camp director Benzion Fuhrer also reached out to several stores in Boro Park, all of whom responded generously. “Per Se, Green’s Bed and Bath, The Lingerie Shop — they sent, for free, all sorts of clothing for the girls: Shabbos robes, shoes, sneakers, shirts and towels so everyone would have what they needed for Shabbos.” A Monday trip to Monsey sponsored by the camp and several others helped fill in more of the missing items, with several stores donating items at no charge, and others offering sizable discounts. The fire was transformed from a harrowing experience into a teachable moment, with the camp praising the girls for their positive attitude, reminding them to be grateful to Hakadosh Baruch Hu for the incredible gifts in their lives and urging them to seize the opportunity as a catalyst for personal growth. Fuhrer also noted how rewarding it was to see others re-

sponding to the emergency in a variety of ways. “All the nearby camps called to see if they could help us or provide anything — food, linens, places for the girls to stay,” said Fuhrer. “Mi k’amcha Yisroel. The outpouring, the chizuk, it was heartwarming. And it made such a big difference.”
Two Workers Injured in Construction Site Collapse With images of Surfside still fresh in the public’s mind, a partial building collapse provided some frightening moments. NBC News reported that the incident took place last Friday afternoon at 439 Lincoln Road, a two-story building in Prospect Lefferts Gardens, just south of Crown Heights. The structure was being demolished to be turned into a five-story residential building when a second-floor brick wall and part of the roof caved in, trapping two workers for more than an hour. According to Hamodia, 65 FDNY and EMS personnel responded to the call, with twelve emergency vehicles arriving on the scene. A spokesperson for the FDNY described the rescue as “highly tactical” and “dangerous.” Both of the workers were transported to Kings County Hospital with serious injuries. Department of Building engineers remained on site for several hours to assess potential safety issues in the building and in neighboring structures.
Free Security Assessments Available for Brooklyn Shuls, Yeshivos and Community Centers With Rosh Hashanah just weeks away, the Jewish Community Relations Council is reaching out to local shuls, yeshivos and community centers to start taking steps to boost safety over the yomim tovim. Boro Park 24 reported that Adam Berish, Brooklyn Regional Manager for the JCRC’s community security initiative, is arranging free security assessments in order to identify areas that may be in need of improvement. “Just securing doors and windows is a big deterrent to intruders,” observed Berish. Berish recommended hiring security officers, including offduty police officers, to protect buildings that could be potential targets, as well as asking their NYPD neighborhood coordination officers to provide extra coverage during davening times. The JCRC is also available to help shuls, yeshivos and community centers apply for grants that can provide security equip-

Revolutionary Tehillim on Klaf Completion To Take Place on Rosh Chodesh Elul On Monday, August 9, Klal Yisroel will unite to celebrate the completion of a Sefer Tehillim on klaf handwritten by a sofer mumcha. It will be the first Tehillim of its kind outside Eretz Yisroel. The Steipler Gaon, zt”l, writes in Karyana De’Igarta about the unique power of reciting Tehillim that was handwritten on klaf with a special kedusha — “retzuya um’kubeles b’yoser” (on a higher level, and meriting greater acceptance). The Hachnosas Sefer Tehillim celebration will take place on Rosh Chodesh Elul, Monday, August 9. The event will commence with the kesivas ha’osiyos at 5:45 p.m. at 1254 51st Street, where the final letters of the Tehillim scroll will be inked in by leading rabbanim and community leaders. Live music will follow at 7 p.m. The handwritten scroll will be stationed in the heart of Boro Park, close to Maimonides Hospital, at 1254 51st Street. Tehillim will be read live daily at 1:00 p.m. (from Sunday to Thursday), chapter by chapter, starting on Tuesday, the 2nd of Elul, and the reading will be joined by participants in-person or remotely. All Tehillim will be read from klaf, as was the practice in the days of Dovid Hamelech, and will be led by talmidei chachamim and guest rabbanim. Names of individuals in need to be mentioned can be submitted on www.tehillimonklaftefilah.org. May the tefillos be accepted as it were recited by the holy Dovid Hamelech himself.

CHAPTER NINETEEN RECAP: Reb
Elazar and his wife spend Shabbos with Aryeh and Bassi’s family in the Galilee. They bring Shlomo and Osher along with them. Osher, in particular, is enthralled with the beautiful nature setting. He bonds with Gadi, whom Osher suspects of having ADHD just like him.
O
ne thing managed to beautify even this dirty patch of yard outside her window: the sunrise. Ariella woke up at 4:30 in the morning, and because she’d gone to bed relatively early, couldn’t fall back asleep. She rose, washed her hands, got dressed and stood near the window. A slow, dark rain was falling, which Ariella assumed would only turn the sand outside her window to mud. Suddenly something cleared up, and despite the cold, she opened the shutter slats and stuck her head outside. The sky was still dark, but ever so slowly, it began to turn lighter and lighter. A wet ray of light bounced off the freshly washed stones of the wall and gave the garden a different look, as if it wasn’t filled with overflowing garbage cans and there wasn’t a cat trying to hide in the shadow of one of them. “I don’t know what to tell you… I just don’t think so.” She jumped. The voice seemed to be coming from right under her window. Who was standing there and talking? “But… I told her already that she could!” “It’s really too bad… I should have known about this. It’s one thing if you want to rent the room out — even though I think you should continue looking for graphic jobs. They bring in more money than a rental every half a year does. But even if we are renting the room out for now, just until you have work, why did you invite her for the meals? You know that I’m exhausted by the time Shabbos comes, and that all I want is my family and my peace and quiet — no extra people, no guests.” Ariella recoiled as if she’d been stung, and her hand groped for the handle of the shutters.

“So what do you want me to do? What should I tell her now?” “Now? You can’t tell her anything now. You invited her already. But please, for next week…” “She won’t be here anymore next week. She’s here for a week, just until next Thursday.” “And maybe I won’t stay for this Shabbos, either,” Ariella whispered to herself behind the closed window. But what should she do now? Knock on Miriam’s door and tell her that in the end she preferred to eat by herself? She didn’t want to continue renting the room, either, if she wasn’t wanted. So what were her options? Could she find a new place? She sat down and forced herself to analyze the situation in a calm frame of mind. Shabbos would be upon them in less than ten hours. There wasn’t enough time to find a room elsewhere… But food — she could manage with that. What would Miriam say? Would she be
offended if she heard that Ariella had suddenly changed her plans? Would she realize that Ariella had heard the exchange through the window? She’d need to find a tactful way to do this. An hour later, she locked the door and quickly passed the other door. She didn’t ask Miriam for guidance getting around the city; her natural sense of direction would hopefully be enough, at least until she’d figure out exactly what to tell her hostess. First she found a cute little grocery
register she added two packages of dark chocolate, and then paid for it all. Outside the grocery, she boarded the first local bus that pulled up to the bus stop. Where it would take her made no difference; for now she needed to become somewhat familiar with Acco. The bus was almost empty, and Ariella sat down with her bags near the back door. She wanted very much to get to know the city so that she could start looking for Osher. The bus was definitely providing what she needed; she quickly realized that it was a long, circuitous route that picked up and dropped off passengers at every bus stop and went into almost every street. The driver, it seemed, had all the time in the world. Excellent. She also had nowhere to hurry to right now. Go back to her quarters? She wanted to push off the conversation with Miriam for as long as possible. On the other hand… Ariella sighed. She had to tell her hostess that she’d

changed her plans. It wasn’t fair to have Miriam continue cooking and preparing for her if Ariella would be canceling. The bus entered a very narrow street, with stores lining both sides. Ariella took out her phone, but didn’t dial yet. Because right near one of the stores she noticed a few boys wearing yarmulkes. They appeared to be in their teens and were wearing black pants and white shirts. Ariella studied the boys. One of them, the one with his back to the road, reminded her of Osher. She bit her lip, wondering if she should press the buzzer and get off at the next stop. But then the boy turned around, and she realized that it was not Osher after all. She looked at her phone again, trying to find Miriam’s number. But she was so engrossed in her thoughts that she couldn’t focus. What if that boy had been Osher? Would the right decision have been to get off the bus and into his range of vision? No way! She didn’t want him to know that she was in town, at least not before she found out what exactly he was up to. She smiled ironically to herself. White shirts, black pants… She could not be sure at all that those were the kind of clothes Osher was wearing this morning. She had a lot of faith in Osher, but to delude herself with foolish dreams was a mistake that wouldn’t get her anywhere. Ariella stuck her hand out and rang the buzzer. By now she’d seen the city by bus, and she needed to walk around a little, especially as the bus was filling up and she wouldn’t be able to speak to Miriam like this anyway. She got off and walked into a quiet, well-tended side street. But before she’d had a chance to look for Miriam’s number again her hostess beat her to it. “Ariella?” “Hi, Miriam, good morning. How are you?” “Baruch Hashem, fine. I hope I didn’t wake you. I knocked gently but didn’t get
any response.” “Oh, I’m not in my room anymore. I went out for a bit,” Ariella replied lightly. “Really? Wow, you’re an early bird! It’s only nine-fifteen!” Ariella smiled. “I guess so…” “I was also pretty good this morning,” Miriam continued. “I like to get up early
“What do you mean?” “I hope you didn’t start cooking yet.” “I actually didn’t, besides for the soup that I made last night. Why?” Her hostess’s voice was laced with surprise. “Because I’m really sorry, and maybe we’ll have another opportunity, but I’m afraid that I won’t be able to eat the meals with you this Shabbos. I prefer to eat them by myself. Because…” But before she managed to formulate some kind of coherent excuse, Miriam rushed in and said, “It’s all right, Ariella. Don’t worry about it. Maybe it’ll work out another time…” Ariella grinned, barely able to contain her sigh of relief.
“Enough with this nonsense, Gadi!” Aryeh felt that he had to step in and cut this conversation short. “Mommy said no such thing.”

on Friday to cook. So I’ve actually gotten a few things done that might interest you.” “Yes?” Ariella didn’t know how to answer. She was afraid of Miriam’s accomplishments on the cooking front, and was annoyed with herself for not having knocked on her hostess’s door before she’d left. “The first friend I spoke to knows Sarah Reiness very well!” “Really?” Ariella was taken aback. She hadn’t realized that their search for information was what Miriam had been referring to. “Yes, she took her daughter to Mrs. Reiness’ clinic after an orthodontist recommended that she go for speech therapy to help maintain the work he’d done.” “Hmm…” Ariella tried to keep her thoughts focused. She would listen to what Miriam had to say, and then she’d figure out how to tell her that she would be declining her Shabbos invitation. Or rather, canceling on her. “She’s an excellent therapist, chareidi, and very successful. A really lovely woman.” “Great, I’m so happy to hear that. Thank you for finding this out, Miriam!” And before Miriam could say anything else, Ariella resolved to just say her piece and get it over with. “As for the cooking you mentioned before, I hope you didn’t get too much done yet.”
***** “There is still no eiruv here,” Aryeh warned Shlomo and Osher as they were about to leave the house after the Friday night meal. “So if you have anything in your pockets, take it out. You can only carry in our yard.” Osher checked his pockets. “Nothing here,” he said. After a second, his eyebrows rose in surprise, and his fingers pulled a long object out of his pocket. “Hey, what’s this? Oh, it’s Gadi’s.” He handed it to the boy’s father, who looked at the clear plastic tube filled with an unidentifiable mixture. “What is this?” Aryeh asked. “No idea. In the middle of the meal, Gadi asked me to watch it for him.” “Gadi?” Aryeh called. The boy dashed out of one of the bedrooms, barefoot and clad in pajamas. “What is this that you asked Osher to keep for you?” his father asked. “That? Oh, you can throw it out…” Gadi wrinkled his nose. “What is it?” “It’s the container from the old thermometer that broke. Mommy told me she doesn’t need it anymore. I wanted to put some food in it for Shlomo.”

Shlomo, who was standing near the door and waiting for Osher, turned around to look at the tube. “I think that if Shlomo were still hungry, Mommy would agree to serve him larger portions than this,” Aryeh said with a smile. “What’s in here?” “Some grape juice and challah, and the imitation fish, and corn soup, and kneidlach. Osher, I gave it to you to keep, but my mother doesn’t let me give it to him in the end.” “To keep it for whom?” the sixteenyear-old asked. “You didn’t tell me anything, Gadi.” “For Shlomo; the food is for him. My mother said she doesn’t let me give him food anymore, because she doesn’t want him to be so happy that he’ll want to stay on.” “Enough with this nonsense, Gadi!” Aryeh felt that he had to step in and cut this conversation short. “Mommy said no such thing. You know she loves having guests!” “But not such a guest,” the boy said, clearly sad. “She told me so just before
Shabbos. She said she doesn’t want me to get close to Shlomo anymore, and that it would be better if he moved away from our area as quickly as possible.” Aryeh patted Shomo’s shoulder reassuringly. “I’m going to find out what this is all about, because this conversation is getting stranger every second. It’s not possible that my wife would —” The boy with the longish hair shrugged, an I-couldn’t-care-less expression on his face. “Yes, ask her, Tatty, please!” Gadi cried. “And tell her that I’m begging you to let him stay here! He’s not dangerous! Please, Tatty!” Shlomo’s face was getting redder by the minute; by now it was nearing purple. Gadi’s father suddenly stopped in his tracks. “Oh!” he said. “Are you talking about the fox that was wandering around here, Gadi?” “Of course! Who else would I be talking about?” “Oy, Gadi! Don’t you know that Uncle Elazar’s talmid, our guest here, is also
named Shlomo?” “Oh, right. I forgot.” Gadi flashed a smile at the guest. “I think it’s a great name for a fox. You’re not angry, Shlomo, are you?” “No,” the boy said. “Couldn’t you find a better name?” Ayreh asked. “Nope. I spoke to Osher about names before Shabbos, and even he couldn’t think of anything better.” “Hmm. We might have to consider a name change anyway,” Aryeh said. “And like Mommy told you, we don’t want you to give the fox food, because it’ll make him want to stay. Besides, it’s assur to feed wild animals on Shabbos — did you know that, Gadi?” “So what’ll happen with him?!” “He’ll manage. Just like Hashem took care of him and all the other creations of his kind before we came to live here, He’ll continue to do so now. Good night, Gadi,” Aryeh said cheerfully. “To bed, please, now!” To be continued…

FROM THE SEFER “HAKESER VEHAKAVOD”: The posek hador, Harav Shmuel Halevi Wosner zt”l, stated, “The wigs that were worn approximately sixty years ago – even in the more modernized country, Vienna – were clearly recognizable from a distance. It was clear that it wasn’t the woman’s own hair since those wigs did not have the natural characteristics of
hair. Yet the wigs of today look just like natural hair.” He then added, “They incite the yetzer hara even more than natural hair, and there would be no posek in previous generations who would be able to find any type of leniency to permit such a sheitel.”
Below is a letter signed by Harav Shmuel Halevi Wosner zt”l, Harav Michel Yehuda Lefkowitz zt”l, and Harav Nissim Karelitz zt”l on 15 Teves 5756:
“It gladdens our hearts to hear that woman have taken upon themselves to be scrupulous in the mitzvah of tznius and have returned to the accepted custom of Yisrael to cover their heads with a kerchief, as opposed to a wig, in order to satisfy the opinions of all poskim. How proper and beautiful is this practice, and how much it increases purity and kedushah. Surely, their zechus is very great. We would like to encourage these women of valor and bless them from the depths of our hearts with children, life, and abundant sustenance and all goodness. As the Yalkut teaches, “The generations will not be redeemed, only in the merit of the modest women in the generation...” Surely it is our obligation to give chizuk to these righteous women who are able to wear a kerchief as a head covering, just like the Chasam Sofer wrote in Shulchan Aruch and in his holy will.”

After growing up in Monsey and hiking in nearby Harriman State Park from my youth, camping is almost second nature to me. As a child, I remember camping with my father in a tent that seemed military-grade, with hundreds of parts and pieces that took hours to put up. Campground amenities were primitive at best; showers and bathrooms with plumbing were a luxury. Today’s camping standards are vastly improved, with modern bathroom houses and somewhat clean showers (though always frequented by an abundance of daddy longlegs).

My first trip together with my wife was a camping trip in the Adirondacks several weeks after our wedding. I must credit her for agreeing to go camping with me, as most women I know would not even entertain the idea. We’ve gone camping together almost every summer since, and now do this together with all of our kids in tow. I usually plan the trip a week or two in advance, deciding which area to visit, which campground to stay at, and the places to visit during our day trips. Packing is quite a process, with every adult and child bringing their week’s share of clothing, linen, air mattresses and personal items. Then there are the tents, poles (which I forgot one year in a story unto itself), towels, soap, toothbrushes, flashlights, bug spray, itch cream, sunblock, Band-Aids, propane tanks and a myriad of other equipment on my large camping list. All this gets stuffed into our cramped minivan, with our roof carrier containing the remaining items that don’t fit in the back of the car or under the kids’ feet. (We occasionally need to pull over when a luggage item falls onto an unsuspecting child during a sharp turn.) Once we arrive at our destination, we unload the car and begin to set up the tents. First we

set up a Pack ‘n Play and put the baby inside to watch the action. In the meantime, the other children are given age-appropriate jobs to help with the tent setup. And let’s not forget about food: I pack a cooler filled with various goodies and make a barbecue every night on our portable gas grill. Dinners include steak, hot dogs, burgers, chicken and grilled vegetables. We also bring along a pot and a propane stove top burner to cook soups for dinner and oatmeal for breakfast. We make several foraging trips to Walmart over the course of our trip to stock up on snacks, condiments and other essentials. The cooler also contains yogurts and cheese, which we eat with crackers, bread or rice cakes for lunch. Most campsites have a camp store where I buy a daily bag of ice to keep the food in the cooler cold (and often get a much-needed cup of hot coffee.) For break-
fast we have cereal and milk. We use rice milk because regular milk doesn’t travel well, and we don’t buy milk locally because we keep chalav Yisroel. We stay in the same campsite for the entire duration of our vacation and pitch the tents just once. All of our clothing and other items (aside from valuables) stay in the tents. However, we are careful never to bring food into the tent, to eat only at the provided picnic table, and to store all food items in the car so that the animals (raccoons, skunks, porcupines and bears) don’t get to it. It is very important not to leave any food around so that uninvited furry visitors don’t make a surprise visit. Unless it’s raining, I usually make a bonfire after supper, and we roast marshmallows and make s’mores. Most campsites sell logs of wood at the camp store, and we collect brush and twigs from the woods to get the fire started. The fire also helps keep away the mosquitos, which are an unavoidable reality of camping trips. We make sure to bring lots of mosquito repellent, itch cream and citronella candles to ease this vexing problem. We don’t hang out in the tent all day. We go on day trips that include tourist attractions, hikes, nature centers and parks. Often the campground has its own amenities including boating, lake swimming, local trails, playgrounds and rec rooms. Our travels for camping trips include as far north as Ottawa and as far south as North Carolina. Our more common destinations include New Hampshire,

trips special is really the experience of spending the week outdoors with our family, food and fires! We rarely see any other frum Jews while camping. We never see other large families at the campground, and we invariably get stares or comments from our neighbors wondering how many kids there are. Most camping people have never seen such a large family camping together, as they camp with two children, at most. It always rains. Always. The worst time for rain is when you are setting up or taking down the tent. But once the tent is set up, the fly keeps the tent dry, and the rain is generally very loud but not a hindrance. Sometimes there are loud thunderstorms in the middle of the night that are really annoying and keep the kids awake. So there you have it: the good, the bad and the in-between. With a bit of planning, camping is an affordable and memorable way to vacation. If you’re looking to vacation in a five-star hotel, a camping trip is definitely not for you. But if you and your spouse are bold enough to take a flashlight to the bathhouse and shower in your Crocs with a friendly spider or two, camping is definitely something to consider.

If there’s an ideal setting that makes the rest of the world fade out, it’s being gathered around a bonfire on a summer night. Soft darkness hides the day’s cares, and in the center, warmth and
light beckon ever closer as the flames crackle, saying, “Come sit — relax and enjoy!” Adults around that fire need no more activity than just sitting and being. Schmoozing some. Singing some. Roasting gourmet goodies. And while the kids revel in the relaxed energy of the grown-ups, there’s something to having great game ideas for them up your sleeve, all talk-based to keep it safe around the flames, and stationary, to keep all hard-working adults firmly relaxed in their camp chairs! Here’s a golden list of ideas that shine for being easy on the setup and high on the fun factor. August 4, 2021

In the Pond, Out of the Pond Up the energy of this game by having the caller announce commands faster and faster as players mirthfully fumble along. Choose one caller. Everyone else sits around the campfire with their hands on their waist. The caller announces one of the following three commands, in no particular order: “In the pond” — The players put their hands forward into the circle (pond, get it?). “Out of the pond” — The players put their hands in the air above their heads. “On the bank” — The players put their hands on their waists. If anyone moves their hands to the wrong place at the wrong time, they’re out of the game and must sit with their hands behind their backs until there’s only one, superfocused person left: the winner!
Sound Train Another form of rapid give and take This game has players agreeing on a consonant or blend — for example, “p” or “sh” — and the circle goes around as everyone takes a turn saying a new word that begins with that consonant or blend. The game continues until a player can’t think of a new word to add, and this player must choose a new consonant for the next round. A tapping and clapping rhythm also works very well with this one.
Numbers Simple, wacky and weirdly addictive This game’s aim is to count out loud, as a group, from number one to as high as possible, but with one major caveat: No two people are allowed to say the same number at the same time. Ready, set… count! Anyone can speak at any time saying any amount of numbers, as long as they begin from number one and list the numbers in order. But, there may be no pointing or gesturing to indicate who will be the next person to speak. As soon as two people say a number at the same time, the group must start over. Can you get to 100?

What Does That Have to Do With IT? Bringing you this rhyming game is vicarious living for me. I saw it in action once as a little shnook watching my older neighbors cozily squished onto a cushioned outdoor swing. My tender age relegated me to the grass as a simple spectator, rhyming abilities notwithstanding. But I loved the idea of that game so much that it stuck in my mind all these years. This game is a rhyme that unfolds from one player to the next, with the chorus being chanted in unison between each statement and answer. It goes like this:
Who Am I? Of course you’re famous; it says so on your forehead! Hand out Post-its and markers (for more visibility in the dimness of night), and have everyone write the name of a famous person on their Post-it. The notes should then be passed further, with everyone getting a name they didn’t write — but without looking at the paper. Every player should then stick their note onto their forehead. Take turns asking the group questions, and see who figures out their famous identity first!
The players chant the game’s chorus, with kneetaps and hand-claps to create a rhythm and add to the fun: “What does that have to do with it, do with it.” The rhyming moves in a circle, with each player addressing the person to his or her right and saying something about them, starting with “Hello.” The addressed player must reply in rhyme with an answer that starts with “That’s because,” but has absolutely nothing to do with the statement made. Then the entire circle chants the chorus. The addressed player then turns right and addresses the next person, who responds in rhyme, with the randomness flying high. The rhyming must be done in rhythm, without pause, with players keeping time with knee-taps and hand-claps. Just remember that there are certain English words that do not have a rhyme, like orange, silver and the like, so please be kind! Example: (All players:) “What does that have to do with it, do with it.” (Chaim:) “Hello, Moishy, your arm is strong.” (Moishy:) “That’s because I sing a song!” (All players:) “What does that have to do with it, do with it.” (Moishy:) “Hello, Dovid, you are so nice.” (Dovid:) “That’s because I once tripped twice!” (All players:) “What does that have to do with it, do with it…”

Broken Telephone If anything is an oldie but goodie that begs to be played around a campfire, it’s this one! I’ll humor you all by actually explaining the game: One person starts the game with a sentence they’ve come up with. This player whispers the sentence to the person next to them once — no repeating — and the second person whispers what he heard to the third person once, and so on. The sentence moves around the circle until the last person repeats aloud what he heard, with the players then comparing it to the original to see how much it changed. It always does. And the larger the group, the more messed up the sentence will be!
Fingers Here’s where you discover lots and lots of trivia about the people you’re with — and they about you! The game begins with everyone holding up all ten fingers. Then one person makes a statement of something he/she has never done. Example: “Never have I gone banana-boating.” The other players must then put down a finger if they have done the stated activity. The goal is to stay with your fingers up the longest, and you’ll find yourself listening to some wild stories on the side!
A Roasted Treat “Quick, name three things you can roast over a campfire!” If anyone wakes you up mid-sleep with this question, I’d bet a s’more that your answer would be some variation of “Marshmallows, potatoes and hot dogs!” These treats are seriously yum, but why stop there? You can roast just about anything, so let’s be playful about what’s on the stick this time around! Have some bread dough handy? Roast little balls of this until they’re golden brown. Add a smear of butter and garlic for savory, and cinnamon and sugar for sweet. Any mini sandwich can be cut and skewered for roasting; think deli, grilled cheese or anything else, really. How about PB&J? Roast some wedges of pineapple, and taste this fruit at its best. Roasted peaches are magical too. Shish kebabs offer endless variety. Create these on skewers using any combination of veggies and meat. Still hankering for that hot dog? Try wrapping it in flaky dough first for a roasted frank ’n blank! And here’s an adorable idea that begs to be tried; introducing... the orange basket! Carefully scoop out the pulp of an orange half, then cut x’s on opposite sides of the peel just below the rim for you to slide a skewer through. Carefully crack an egg into your basket, heat it over the fire for about 10 minutes, add salt and pepper, and enjoy!

Labor Day Weekend, 1984, Sunday Morning he crisp cool Catskill morning air heralded the advent of fall and an impending drop of temperature. Green leaves clung to the trees and wildflowers endured in bloom, but the crispness of the air signaled the last gasp of a passing season. In a matter of days, it would be back to work and back to school again. Hotel guests gathered at the shuffleboard courts and around the ping-pong tables. Other patrons gathered to watch the more athletic guests engage in competitive rounds of volleyball. Yet other guests made use of the sunny grounds as they enjoyed the last stroll of the season. We were an adventurous bunch and wanted something a little more exciting, a more rustic outdoor excursion to cap off the end of summer. We wanted to do something that would allow us to enjoy the beautiful outdoors to the fullest. The hotel advertised hiking trails in the nearby woods. The concierge offered detailed information on the duration and difficulty of the various routes. We were a group of one adult, some teenagers, and young kids. The brash among us advocated for the most strenuous passage, but the calmer and more reasonable minds won the argument for a moderate trail, a two-hour loop in the woods. Two trails led out from the same trailhead. They followed

a similar route marked with blue and red tree markings for the first half a mile. At the half-mile mark, the trail split, with blue markings showing the loop trail, which we intended to take, and red markings indicating a one-way eight-mile trek to the nearest town. Excited to begin, we made our way into the woods. The fresh smell of pines and the abundant wilderness fueled our sense of adventure. The markings were clear. Red and blue paint marked every second tree bark. We followed the route until what must have been the half-mile mark. And then the blue marks stopped. We scouted around for the markings for our trail but couldn’t find them. Not wanting to return to the hotel, we figured that even though the red route was longer, we had ample food and drink to get us through eight miles of woods, and that when we arrived in town, we could use a payphone to call the hotel and have someone pick us up. Opting to take the longer route, we carried on. Twenty minutes later, the red markings came to an end. We were smack in the middle of the woods and nowhere near the town. Unsure of how to proceed, we figured that it would be best to forge ahead in what appeared to be a straight line. Should we fail to find additional markings, we reasoned, we would make an about face and return to the hotel. We continued into the woods for a minute or so. There were no markings on any trees. We turned around and retraced our steps, but now we could not find the marked trees we had initially followed. In the dense mountain forest, the trees all looked

exactly the same. We were essentially walking in circles. We were lost and had no idea where we were or how to get out. The year 1984 was still a ways off from the cell phone era. Being lost in a forest meant really being lost in a forest. No phone. No GPS. No tracking. In an act of desperation, the adult leader of the group yelled out, “Hello? Hello?” Not that anybody expected a response, but with no realistic options, people tend to resort to unrealistic solutions. “Hello?” we yelled out again — and a robin chirped in the distance. A squirrel rustled through the leaves. A chipmunk scurried along the ground. There was silence. “Hello?” The sound echoed off of the tall red oaks and reverberated in the huckleberry shrubs below. There was silence. It is during moments like this that one feels a sense of connection to his Creator. Alone and powerless, a feeling of growing panic coupled with a sense of ein od milvado permeated our group. Once again, “Hello? Hello?” Then a sound in the distance echoed our call. We heard someone call, “Hello!” But we saw nobody. Unsure if this was our echo or some kind of auditory mirage, we repeated the call: “Hello?” This time the response was clearer. It was a distinct voice: “Hello!”
We still didn’t see anybody, but our strange exchange of calls into the wilderness continued. “Hello?” was met with a response of “Hello!” that got closer and closer. Suddenly, a man appeared. He was tall, about six-four; he sported multiple tattoos on his arms and neck and was wearing a cowboy hat, tattered jeans and a skimpy T-shirt. He was also brandishing a Winchester Model 70 rifle. “Hello!” he said. “Welcome to my neck of the woods.” Now we weren’t sure whether this man was our hope, or our newest danger. For better or for worse, this was the man that we had to deal with. We related to him the details of our saga and that we would like nothing better than to find our way out of the woods and back to civilization. “You shouldn’t be out here this morning,” he told us. “A dangerous convicted felon has escaped from the local state penitentiary and is roaming these woods.” Apparently, the local sheriff had put out a call for off-duty and retired law enforcement officials to come help search. “I’m aiding in the search, and that’s why I’m here,” he said. At this point, leaving the woods was fine with us. We had no intention of remaining there. The man knew the woods like the back of his hand. All the trees appeared virtually identical to us, but he had no problem navigating the terrain. With the ease of an expert outdoorsman, he led us back to the outskirts of the hotel. We took leave of him and thanked him profusely before continuing up the last few feet of the trail ourselves. Finally, we crossed to the hotel grounds and breathed a sigh of relief. Exhilarated by our safe return and from what could have been a very different ending, we made our way through the hotel’s winding paths. The shuffleboard competition was still in full swing. The ping-pong players continued their game with enthusiasm, and the cheers of the crowd rose from the volleyball court. We had just experienced a most traumatic event, but everything was normal as far as everyone else was concerned. “How was the hike?” yelled my cousin, who was lounging nearby. “Fascinating,” I responded. “Extremely fascinating.” EPILOGUE: After our return to the hotel, we were told that police had set up roadblocks around the surrounding roads looking for the escaped convict. A warning had been issued to avoid possible contact with this dangerous individual. Police eventually apprehended the fugitive, and he served out the remainder of his sentence in prison.

T S E H G THE HI PEAKS
The panoramic views from high up on a mountain are not possible to put into words. Here we present record peaks that are not exactly in our neck of the woods, but still close enough to visit. As the summer heat begins to recede and the weather paints the foliage in those breathtaking autumn hues, these are great spots to keep in mind. If you are choosing to take any trails heading up one of these mountains, make sure to get hold of a trail map (usually available at the site’s visitor center) and to implement all safety hiking precautions.

The mountain: The highest peak in Connecticut was also believed to be the highest point, but later technology proved that that distinction goes to nearby Mt. Frissell, which has an elevation of 2,379 in Connecticut (its summit is higher, at 2,454 feet, but it’s in Massachusetts). The views from the summit are breathtaking; on a clear day, you can even see as far as some of the southern New Hampshire peaks. How to reach the summit: There are several hiking trails. The trail we’re featuring is the Undermountain Trail; there are maps at the trailhead. Up to the summit and then back to the trailhead is a total of 5 miles. The hike can leave you breathless at some points.

FIREFLIES That’s a Big Flash! There are over 2,000 species of fireflies, and they vary tremendously in size. The largest fireflies can be the size of the palm of your hand!
The Lights Choir Where’d That Come From?
Not all fireflies flash solo. Some fireflies coordinate their flashing, making light at the same second. While those species aren’t found in the United States, our country does boast synchronous fireflies, which are fireflies that flash in a domino effect, each flashing a second after the next. This creates the effect of a wave of light rippling through the night.
Fireflies produce a chemical reaction in their light organ in order to flash. More specifically, firefly luciferin, a lightemitting compound, lights up when oxidation is prompted by an enzyme known as firefly luciferase. This is probably the best-known example of bioluminescence. Light it up!
Want to see the show? There are two popular destinations where visitors can observe the light show. The first is in Elkmont in Great Smoky National Park. The other is at the Pennsylvania Firefly Festival in the Allegheny National Forest. Just be sure to follow Light Show Etiquette, as Great Smoky National Park requests: • Use a flashlight that’s covered with red cellophane. • Use your flashlight only when you’re walking around. • When in use, keep your flashlight pointed downward.
Firefly Scientist Luciferase, the enzyme that fireflies produce, helps scientists in their research. There are many ways scientists use this chemical, one of which is to light up parts of the body so they can see what’s going on inside!

CRICKETS Leg Listeners Check the Cricket If you want to know the temperature, you can check your local cricket song. Professor Amos E. Dolbear was the first to realize that crickets chirp less when it’s hotter outdoors. Back in 1897, he published what became known as Dolbear’s Law, which is a mathematical equation to help you figure out the temperature from the number of cricket chirps, though it appears to work differently for different species. Depending on the kind of cricket in your backyard, you may be able to count the number of cricket chirps in 14 seconds and then add 40 to get the current temperature in Fahrenheit!
You can find your cricket’s ears on its legs. Pretty awkward for whispering a secret in its ear, but there’s probably no need to do that anyway, because crickets have amazing hearing. If you’ve ever tried to find a cricket, you probably noticed that as soon as you get too close, the cricket hears you approach and stops chirping.

Crickets for Sale
I wouldn’t like a cricket in my house or bungalow, but in China, people keep crickets in their homes. They feed the crickets good food and then hold cricket fights where owners can bring their crickets to compete. Over in Brazil, people consider certain crickets good omens.
Raising crickets is a major business, done in warehouses across the United States. These crickets are mostly sold as food for reptile pets, like frogs or snakes.
The Mechanics of the Music Crickets sing by rubbing one wing against a bumpy organ on the other wing. It’s like running your finger down a comb’s bristles. Hear anything?
