THE TREASURE IN YOUR BACKYARD

(Re: A Trip Spent in a Tent, Issue 96) I read your camping article, and while it sounds like a thrilling adventure, it may be one that many may not be daring enough to try. To help more fainthearted adventurers slowly break into sleeping in the wilderness, here’s a great idea we tried, and loved. We set up camp in our backyard (right here in the city!) — with a tent, sleeping bags, a grill… the works! — and enjoyed this mini staycation close enough to the comfort of home and the option of all amenities just a minute away. It was really fun, and something we hope to do again. A.I. After growing up in Monsey and hiking in nearby Harriman State Park from my youth, camping is almost second nature to me. As a child, I remember camping with my father in a tent that seemed military-grade, with hundreds of parts and pieces that took hours to put up. Campground amenities were primitive at best; showers and bathrooms with plumbing were a luxury. Today’s camping standards are vastly improved, with modern bathroom houses and somewhat clean showers (though always frequented by an abundance of daddy longlegs).

SOMETHING’S FISHY

(Re: Grill On, Issue 96) I was shocked to see your recipe for “The Tastiest Marinade” in which you indicate that Worcestershire sauce should be used with chicken cutlets. It’s well known that Worcestershire sauce is made with anchovies, and it would be a major issue for this to be used with chicken. There are some fish-free Worcestershire sauces, but they are specialty items and you’d have to look for them, because the standard

Worcestershire sauce does have fish in it. I was really surprised that your editorial staff did not catch that. A Disappointed Reader THE BORO PARK VIEW RESPONDS: We apologize for this oversight. Most heimish brands of Worcestershire sauce do not contain fish; the bottle should be carefully checked before using it with meat. In this recipe, Gefen Worcestershire sauce, which does not contain any fish ingredients, was used.

A BEAUTIFUL NEW PRACTICE

(Re: Filling Shabbos Afternoons With Sanctity, Issue 95) I enjoyed the articles about shalosh seudos you featured in last week’s issue. It’s unbelievable how you never fail to present original topics. I would like to share something our family has recently implemented; perhaps another family will be inspired to do the same. I did not grow up with the “minhag” of joining extended family for the third Shabbos meal. (I don’t even live within walking distance to any family.) Shabbos afternoons and evenings are joyfully spent at home with myself and my young children. My husband and sons remain in shul for shalosh seudos, while the girls eat, sing and play at home. During the months of the COVID-19 pandemic when shuls were closed, shalosh seudos at home took on a new dimension. With the men home, extra creativity and spice were put into our previously standard fare of challah and dips. From food prep to table decor, the children went all out. The singing of zemiros and family favorites were enjoyed by all, and spending the last hours of Shabbos together became a unique highlight of the week! Although we were so grateful when shuls reopened, baruch Hashem, and we were blessed to resume interacting with other people, we sorely missed the Shabbos evenings we had become accustomed to. That’s why my husband and I came up with an idea that we have been implementing for quite a few months already. Once a month, usually on Shabbos Mevarchim, he returns home after Mincha to have the shalosh seudos meal with the family. It’s so special and meaningful. I know that in the Litvish circles eating at home is the norm; however, in the chassidish world, the men learn, sing and inspire each other in shul. We have merged the two and get the best of both worlds. I have learned so much from our experiences during the pandemic, and I am trying to hold on to the messages and awareness gained during that time. May all of Klal Yisroel be healthy and well, and may we all be together very soon in Yerushalayim! S.B. THE BORO PARK VIEW WELCOMES YOUR COMMENTS, FEEDBACK AND LETTERS.

PARSHAS SHOFTIM Keeping Calm

In this week’s parsha, we read, “Tamim tihyeh im Hashem Elokecha” (Devarim 18:13). Rashi quotes the Sifri who says, “Hishalech imo b’temimus...” — a person should follow Hashem with complete simplicity, depending on Him without questioning and accepting whatever happens to him with pure temimus. People experience difficulties in life, and it can be challenging not to be anxious about the past or worried about the future. How can we embrace all that happens with temimus and serenity? Note: We each have a chiyuv hishtadlus according to our level of bitachon. The following story is not meant to be imitated; rather, it casts a glimpse into the heart of a lofty ba’al bitachon.

HE WAS THE PARADIGM of a Yerushalayimer Yid, saturated with yiras Shamayim and middos tovos. When it came to the middah of bitachon, especially, Reb Avraham Moshe Grossman, zt”l, was above and beyond. It wasn’t just in theory that he had bitachon; he strongly sensed his loving Father guiding his every step. And despite this already close connection, he never stopped working on growing in this area. As an exercise in strengthening his trust in Hashem, Reb Avraham Moshe stopped locking his front door on Friday nights. “Shabbos has a greater zechus,” he said. “The Shechinah rests in the world. I have bitachon, and so there is no reason for me to lock my door.” Soon this became his steady practice. When the Grossmans’ oldest grandchild got married, the family prepared to travel out of town for Shabbos. “Maybe we should lock the door this week,” the Rav’s wife said. “Especially because there have been so many robberies in our neighborhood lately.” “Just the opposite!” Reb Avraham Moshe replied, his face aglow. “This is such a great opportunity for us to strengthen

our trust in our Father Above. It’s no longer a chiddush that we leave the front door open on Shabbos; we do it every week. But this week, if we leave the door unlocked even though we are not home, we have the chance to rely on Hakadosh Baruch Hu completely.” His passionate words made an impact on his wife, who had come to grow alongside her husband. His enthusiasm was contagious, and she agreed. After enjoying a beautiful Shabbos, the Grossmans made their way home. As they approached home, Rebbitzen Grossman was suddenly overwhelmed with a sense of foreboding. “I have this bad feeling that there were thieves in our house over Shabbos,” she whispered. They walked up to their building, and Rebbetzin Grossman couldn’t bring herself to go inside. “If it happened, I really don’t want to see the scene they left behind,” she said. But Reb Avraham Moshe didn’t think twice. “Our Father is watching over us! We are in His hands,” he said, and then strode up the steps together with his son. As they reached their floor, the son shuddered. “Oy,

Tatty! Look what happened!” There was no mistaking it. The front door was resting on a slant, having been completely removed by the hinges. Thieves had indeed visited; someone had been inside! The boy began panicking. Who knew what was left inside, if anything at all? What did the house look like? But his father was calm as ever. “Our Father in Shamayim watches over us all the time,” he said. “I rely on Him, only on Him. If we deserve the damages, we’ll accept it lovingly. But I think that our Father doesn’t want to harm us. I don’t think we suffered any loss here.” Gently, they moved the door aside and entered the house. Surprise! Everything looked normal, just the way it had when they had left on Friday. They looked around. The china closet was full; not even a becher had been removed. The jewelry was in the drawer, and not even a single tissue had been moved from its place. No broken items, no overturned mess. The home was as tranquil as ever. The son ran to call his mother, who was wondering what was taking so long. They went upstairs together. Reb Avraham Moshe was composed. “You’re wondering how this could be?” he asked. “Do you think a robber can steal when Hashem Himself is watching over us? When we feel Hashem’s hand guiding us, then the hands of the robber are tied, his eyes are blind. He cannot do a thing.” Interestingly, a short while later, the burglar behind the local robberies was caught. Only then did the Grossmans discover why they had been spared. After the thief removed the hinges of their door, he realized that the door was unlocked. The family must be somewhere near! he panicked, and he fled the scene without even entering the house. The very act that looked like the opposite of protection turned out to be their greatest protection.

There was no mistaking it. The front door was resting on a slant, having been completely removed by the hinges.

* * * * * Obviously, the moral of this story is not to begin sleeping with unlocked doors. Rather, the lesson is clear. The more trust a person has in Hashem, the greater protection he merits. When we live with true emunah and let go of our worries, feeling as if Hashem is holding our hand, we will indeed be able to remain calm; Hashem will care for us. “Tamim tihyeh” — by believing with our whole heart that Hashem knows what is good for us, we will be “im Hashem Elokecha” — Hashem will protect us and envelop us in everlasting serenity.

Did You Know? The prohibition of destroying a fruit tree is discussed in this week’s parsha. The pasuk uses the expression “Ki ha’adam eitz ha’sadeh,” and from here derives the parable of a person being likened to a tree — even though the simple explanation of the phrase, according to Rashi, is the opposite!

Avreichim Geonim - Shas Yiden

L-R: Maran Hagaon Harav Matzliach Mazuz, Rosh Yeshivat Kisse Rachamim; Hagaon Harav Avrohom Eisen, Pozna Rov, Founder - Shas Yiden

As well, there were individual debates between the Shas Yiden and the examiners. Each of the examiners came with his own style and searching questions. Some involved identifying passages and even specific wording used in various masechtos, others contextual or contrasting, and many others in depth and explanations of Rishonim. There were also ‘trick’ questions that tested their mettle. One examiner was Maran Hagaon Chaim Tzvi Shapira, shlit”a, Rav Khal Chassidim Ramat Aharon, Rosh Av Beit Din Belz in Eretz Yisroel and Rosh Yeshivas Belz in Bnei Brak. The other examiner was Maran Hagaon Harav Matzliach Chai Mazuz, shlit”a, Rav in Rishon Lezion and Rosh Yeshivat Kisei Rachamim, Bnei Brak.

Gedolim and Luminaries of the Generation

Avreichim Geonim - Shas Yiden

Rav Shapira said that he felt inadequate to express his amazement and surprise when he examined the Shas Yiden. “Not only do they know Shas, but the commentaries as well, with incredible clarity… praised is the eye that has witnessed this.” With that he turned to the supporters of Shas Yiden who were present and declared: “You should know that Shas Yiden is the best investment of your lives – in this world and the World-to-Come.” He then went on to say, “For me, today is like a Yom Tov. There was not a question that I asked from across the entire Shas that they did not answer, whether relating to exact recall or clear analysis as required by Chaza”l… Without doubt, the future gedolim and luminaries of our generation will come from Shas Yiden.” Commenting on the farher, Rav

Mazuz said, “Aside from asking many questions, I was privileged to ‘walk’ with them through all the areas of Shas. I so enjoyed hearing their full and all-encompassing answers and was amazed by the breadth and full mastery by all the avreichim geonim. The entire Shas is sharply honed in their mouths, including Kodashim and Taharot. They are like those rare ones who can claim that ‘I am versed in all Six (Sidrei Mishna)’ (refer Bava Metzia 114b and Rashi’s comment). “Praised is a generation that such has been possible in its time!” To watch the dynamic farhers, or for more information on Shas Yiden, or to donate click on www.shasyiden.com or call 718-702-1528 or Mail: 1274 49th Street, #562, Brooklyn, NY 11219. CHAPTER 20 RECAP: Shabbesai Tzvi travels clandestinely to meet with the Soul Healer, Rabbi Nattan Haazati to heal his emotional exhaustion. The Soul Healer reveals to him that he, Nattan, is Moshiach’s harbinger, Eliyahu Hanavi.

S

habbesai Tzvi stared at the young man, incredulous and speechless. “Ours is one of the most important meetings in the history of the world,” said Nattan. “It is the meeting of Moshiach and Eliyahu Hanavi. The king has wandered in exile for many years, but no more. A sign has come from Heaven, directing the footsteps of the king to the door of his prophet. Together, we will be a mighty force, an unstoppable force. I will proclaim your kingdom, and you will rule.” Shabbesai Tzvi continued to stare at Nattan. “Listen to me,” implored Nattan. “I know this to be the truth. And think! If I am indeed destined to be your prophet, then you can never succeed without me. Come, let us join forces! Accept me as your prophet!” “Nattan, your revelation has inflamed my mind,” said Shabbesai Tzvi. “But I must be careful. I cannot answer you so quickly. Why, I have never set eyes upon you before today.” Nattan Haazati paused for a meditative moment. “I understand that,” he said. “But grant me this. For the next few weeks, let me accompany you wherever you

go. We can go together to the holy gravesites. During this time, you’ll get to know me. Then you’ll be better disposed to answer when I ask you again to accept me as your prophet.” Shabbesai Tzvi ran his fingers through his silken beard. Then he nodded. For two weeks, Shabbesai Tzvi and Nattan Haazati traveled the length and breadth of Eretz Yisroel. They prayed at the gravesite of Rabi Shimon bar Yochai in Meron, Rabi Meir Baal Haness in Teveriah and the Arizal in Tzefas. In the evenings, there were lengthy discussions about Kabbalah, as each discovered the full scope of the other’s knowledge and power. They traveled to Yerushalayim and walked together through its ancient alleyways to the Wall. Every second and fifth day of the week, they would go to the Kever Rochel in Beis Lechem. Once, they even went to the Ma’aras Hamachpela in Chevron, although Jews were forbidden entry. Standing outside, they gazed wistfully at the awesome structure. Someday, we will be free to enter whenever we choose, they told each other. One day, as they walked through the sun-drenched streets of the Jew-

ish quarter of Yerushalayim, Nattan seemed particularly preoccupied. “What’s on your mind, Nattan?” asked Shabbesai Tzvi. “I’m thinking about how difficult it’ll be to persuade the rabbis of Yerushalayim to accept our truth. We must have a plan. In fact, we must develop a carefully planned strategy to spread your message to the entire world. We cannot simply sit back and wait for everyone to come running.” “Go on.” “Let’s first take the problem of the opposition of the rabbis of Yerushalayim. I think we must make private contact with one or two of them and convince them of our veracity. We must also recruit additional supporters to fill prominent positions. In fact, I’ve already suggested such a meeting to Shmuel Primo, one of the younger rabbis. Would you care to meet him?” “Very well, Nattan. When?” “Whenever you want to. How about right now?” “Fine. Let’s pay him a visit.” Shmuel Primo himself opened the door. He was a plump man with tiny eyes set in a broad fleshy face. He did not seem particularly surprised by the visit. He showed his guests into a small sitting room. Shabbesai Tzvi and Shmuel Primo first discussed a difficult passage in Chovos Halevavos, which led them on an intricate trail through many obscure topics in the Gemara and Shulchan Aruch.

“They say you’re a miracle worker,” said Shmuel Primo. “They say you know the secrets of the universe. Some say you’re Moshiach, that you’ll bring the Final Redemption of the Jewish people. Is this true?” “Yes, it’s true,” said Shabbesai Tzvi, fixing Primo with a penetrating look. “The Almighty has sent me, Shabbesai the son of Mordechai Tzvi, to bring an end to our long banishment from our homeland, but the people have to follow me of their own free will. Those who oppose me and turn the people against me stand in the way of the Redemption.” Primo tore his eyes away from Shabbesai Tzvi and turned to Nattan Haazati. “Nattan, what do you say?” he asked. “I know this to be the truth, Shmuel,” said Nattan. “But how do you know?” asked Shmuel Primo. “I cannot tell you the whole story, but I can just say this. It came to me in a Divine revelation.” “A Divine revelation, you say?” Primo raised his eyebrows. “I don’t take your words lightly, Nattan, but doesn’t the opposition of the rabbis of Yerushalayim make you stop and think?” “Of course, it does. It makes me stop and think about how that opposition can be overcome. Tell me, Shmuel, when Moshiach comes, will all the leaders of the Jewish people instantly accept him? Or will there be some, perhaps many, who turn their backs on him? The answer is obvious, I think. It also follows that those who accept him early will merit higher rank in the kingdom of Moshiach.” Shmuel Primo’s eyes darted to Shabbesai Tzvi and then back to Nattan. “What do you expect from me?” he asked. “We’re asking for your friendship, Shmuel.” “I was never an enemy.” “We’re asking for your help. You’re a gifted writer. We want you to use your talents for our mission.” “I must think about it.” “Don’t think for too long, Shmuel,” said Shabbesai Tzvi. “The Redemption will come with or without you. Don’t squander your chance to earn everlasting reward. The choice is yours. Come, Nattan, let us go.” Shabbesai Tzvi and Nattan Haazati returned to Gaza several days before Shavuos. Shabbesai Tzvi sent a message to his wife Sarah, who had remained behind in the House of Chelebi in Cairo, that he would not be returning for Shavuos. Then he went into seclusion, spending most of his time in Nattan’s room in the back of the house. Nattan busied himself with the arrangements for the festival. He invited all the rabbis of Gaza to meet in his house on Shavuos night in honor of his illustrious guest, Shabbesai Tzvi. The weather in Gaza was humid and oppressive, but cool breezes from the nearby Mediterranean Sea accompanied the arrival of Shavuos night. Shabbesai Tzvi and Nattan prayed in a small shul in the adjoining courtyard. After the meal, rabbis began to arrive from all over the city of Gaza. The men crowded into the large room in the back of the house, eager to meet the renowned Shabbesai Tzvi and hear what

he had to say. For one full hour, Shabbesai Tzvi dazzled them with a very deep and learned discourse, touching on halacha, aggadah and Kabbalah. He quoted verbatim from the writings of the Prophets and related them to the present times by means of brilliant and imaginative new interpretations. At times, he made his listeners laugh. At times, he made them cry. After Shabbesai Tzvi finished, other rabbis took turns offering new insights into the festival and various other Torah topics. Lively discussions followed each rabbi’s presentation. Nattan Haazati’s turn came late in the night. The weariness of the listeners lent an aura of unreality to the scene. The candles were no more than flickering stubs. Huge charcoal shadows elbowed one another on the plaster walls. Nattan waited for absolute silence before he spoke. Starting with a Gemara in Maseches Shabbos, he began to develop a fascinating theme. Suddenly, a violent tremor seized his body, and he began to shake uncontrollably. Several men sprang forward to help him. “Don’t touch me!” he cried out. “If you touch me, my soul will be torn from my body, and I will die a horrible death.” The men shrank back and watched in horrified helplessness as tremor after tremor passed through Nattan’s body. His head was thrown back, his eyes squeezed tightly shut. “Listen to me!” he called out in a strangled voice. “Listen to the vision of Nattan Binyamin the son of Elisha

Chaim Halevi. A strong wind arises in the north. The heavens and the earth recoil in terror. Kingdoms totter and fall. The end of days approaches. The footsteps of Moshiach tread upon the dusty soil of Eretz Yisroel. His name is Shabbesai the son of Mordechai Tzvi. Long live Shabbesai Tzvi, our king! Long live Moshiach ben Dovid!” At this point, Nattan fell into a dead faint, but no one in the room dared move. Presently, Nattan regained consciousness. Speaking in a strange and hollow voice, he uttered a long stream of gematria formulations that identified Shabbesai Tzvi as Moshiach through the numerical value of certain words in the Torah. He then went on to explain the precise rank and nature of the soul of Moshiach in the Kabbalistic scheme of Creation. When he finished, he once again collapsed in a dead faint and remained unconscious for the rest of the night. Nattan’s prophecy electrified the rabbis of Gaza. If they had regarded Shabbesai Tzvi with respect before, they now regarded him with overwhelming awe. Reports of the Shavuos night incident circulated throughout Gaza and even reached Yerushalayim in the distant Hills of Yehudah. Shabbesai Tzvi himself was deeply moved by the experience. At last, he could become a true king of the Jewish people. He now had his official prophet. There were no blemishes on his holy soul. The lack of progress was not due to the displeasure of the Almighty

with His servant Shabbesai Tzvi. Not at all. Nattan had been right. All that had been lacking was a true prophet to proclaim to the people of the world that Moshiach had arrived. Nattan Haazati would be that prophet. Two days after Shavuos, Shabbesai Tzvi went into an extended period of illumination and ecstasy. On the seventeenth day of Sivan in the year 1665, Shabbesai Tzvi proclaimed himself, for the first time in public, as Moshiach. The entire community of Gaza and its rabbis followed in his wake. Wild rumors and exaggerated reports of earlier events in the life of Shabbesai Tzvi reached every ear in Gaza. Even the Arabs and the Turks of the city, swept up in the frenzy, looked into the radiant face of the new king of the Jews and withdrew to the safety of their homes. Shabbesai Tzvi appointed a group of followers to represent the Twelve Tribes. Accompanied by his prophet Nattan and the representatives of the Tribes, he rode a majestic horse through the streets of Gaza. Cheering crowds lined the streets and threw flowers in the path of the mounted king. As far as the eye could see, jubilant dancers filled the streets, and joyous song adorned the air. Shabbesai Tzvi’s spirit soared within him. His conquest of Gaza, one of the most prominent Jewish settlements in Eretz Yisroel, had been total and almost instantaneous. Yerushalayim lay ahead. After Months of Allegations, Cuomo Resigns as Governor of New York Dogged by allegations of impropriety and an ongoing impeachment inquiry, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced his resignation on Tuesday, saying that his stepping down was in the state’s best interests. Even as he announced that he would be leaving the governor’s mansion, Cuomo insisted that he had done nothing wrong. A report released last week by Attorney General Letitia James alleged that he had harassed multiple women and created a work environment filled with “fear and intimidation,” prompting the State Assembly to start impeachment hearings. A stunning number of New York’s elected officials on both sides of the aisle and even President Joe Biden have been calling for Cuomo’s resignation in recent days, and Cuomo’s top aide, Melissa DeRosa, resigned suddenly on Monday, reported the Associated Press. Addressing the state at a Tuesday morning press conference, Cuomo said that with the current charges swirling, he felt it was in the state’s best interest for him to step down. “Government operations and wasting energy on distraction is the last thing government should be,” said Cuomo. “I cannot be the cause. New York tough means New York loving, and I love New York and I love you. Everything I have ever done has been motivated by that love, and I would never want to be unhelpful in any way.” According to the Associated Press, Cuomo is still facing the possibility of criminal charges from multiple prosecutors in different counties. Cuomo will be leaving office on August 24 and will be replaced by Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul, who will be New York’s first female governor. Over the years, Cuomo made no secret of the fact that he’d hoped to win a fourth term as governor,

an accomplishment that even his father, the late Mario Cuomo, had failed to achieve during his tenure in Albany.

Girls Forced To Spend Shabbos in Antwerp After Being Kicked Off Two Flights to NY Eighteen teenage girls who had been touring Jewish sites in Europe found themselves stranded in the Amsterdam airport, with last-minute arrangements made for them to spend Shabbos in Belgium.

Hamodia reported that the girls were part of a group of 56 girls, most of whom were from Monsey, Boro Park and Williamsburg, who took part in a two-week trip to Europe with Rebbetzin Shulamis Sternbuch. The girls found themselves in an uncomfortable position when they first landed in Amsterdam on July 20 at the beginning of their trip, when an airport security person claimed that they had refused to comply with in-flight rules, allegations that the girls vehemently denied. Two weeks later, the girls said they were harassed by flight attendants on a KLM flight from Ukraine to Amsterdam, and when they attempted to board their connecting flight from Amsterdam’s Schiphol Air-

port, eighteen members of the group were told they would not be allowed to get onto the plane. KLM told the girls they would only be allowed to board another flight to New York if they paid a fine of 2,000 euros — an amount equivalent to more than $2,300 each. Attempts by the girls to book a flight on Delta, a KLM partner, were equally unsuccessful, with Delta also charging a 2,000-euro fine and KLM insisting that switching to a different airline would trigger a 200-euro release fee for each piece of luggage. While KLM said that the girls had displayed “unruly behavior” on their flights to and from Europe, family members felt that the girls had been unfairly singled out. “Those girls were targeted because they are Jews,” said the brother of one of the girls. “They were adhering to their rules and instructions the entire time. In fact, many of the girls had slept through most of the flight and had no interactions with the flight staff.” The girls spent last Thursday night in a cordoned-off section of Schiphol Airport, eating food supplied by Chabad shluchim as community leaders reached out to elected officials for assistance. After being finally booked on a Friday morning flight back to New York, the group was booted off another plane, ostensibly because two girls switched seats with other passengers, although the others involved in the seat swap were allowed to continue on the flight. Given that it was already close to noon, arrangements were made for the girls to spend Shabbos in a rented house in Antwerp, located approximately 100 miles away, with food delivered for the entire group. Rabbi Yisroel Kahan of Oizrim Jewish Council, who had been advocating for the girls, said that the girls returned home safely on Sunday, flying home out of Antwerp, not Amsterdam, on a United Airlines flight.

Planning on going out to eat in New York City? Better bring your COVID-19 vaccination card, or be ready to be turned away at the door. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, a strong advocate of COVID-19 vaccinations, announced his Key to NYC Pass program last week, with enforcement to begin on September 13. Under the program, only those who have gotten at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine would be allowed to dine inside in city restaurants or go to indoor restaurants, gyms, concerts and performances. Paper vaccination cards, the city’s NYC COVID-19 safe app, or New York State’s Excelsior app will all be accepted as proof of vaccination. De Blasio said that he expects other cities to follow suit in an all-out effort to quash the Delta variant of the coronavirus. “There’s no doubt in my mind it’s going to save lives,” said de Blasio. “It’s also going to save this city from slipping backward. We can’t let that happen.”

tours Acco a bit. Realizing that her hostess’s husband does not want guests for Shabbos, she decides to eat alone in her room. On the moshav where the Reinesses, Osher and Shlomo are spending Shabbos, little Gadi can’t seem to get enough of his his pet fox.

riella spent the rest of Friday exploring the streets near her small apartment. It was refreshing to see children wearing velvet yarmulkes, and young men in suits and hats, walking briskly with typical Erev Shabbos purposefulness. Not that she could ignore the rolling Arabic that she heard as well, as Arab women in their distinct garb, pushing strollers and surrounded by children, passed by. Her Shabbos was ready, and there was nowhere for her to hurry. She studied the buildings, noticed the clean sidewalks and streets, and wondered about the lack of traffic lights, both for vehicles and for pedestrians. She did not see Osher, however, or any other youths that could have been his friends in whatever learning framework he was in. Just at the end of her walking tour, she saw an Arab woman sitting under a massive umbrella with a few buckets of flowers. Ariella selected two modest bunches, paid for them, and then, in the rain that had begun to fall, walked back to her temporary home. As she entered the building, she hesitated, not sure whether or not to knock on Miriam’s door. There was a little mat near it, and she decided to leave one of the bouquets there, where her hostess was sure to find it. She placed the other bouquet in a plastic cup on the small table in her room and leaned it against the wall. Shabbos was about to descend on the world. If her parents would know that she was eating her meals alone, they would be horrified.

Since Nosson’s passing, Ariella had never been alone for a Shabbos seudah. She was always a guest at someone’s house — usually her parents’, although sometimes she went to friends, and on the rare occasion, to Nosson’s parents. In a phone call to her parents, she hadn’t told them about her change in plans. She knew it would send their worry seismograph on a wild spike, and there was little they could do to help her. She didn’t want her mother frantically looking for a family that would be kind enough to host her so that she shouldn’t be alone for Shabbos. And besides, she didn’t want the whole thing to get back to Miriam, who would be very embarrassed. She wasn’t afraid of eating by herself, just as she wasn’t afraid to sleep alone, or in general, to be alone. She bentched licht and then said Kabbalas Shabbos and some Tehillim. She davened Maariv, recited Kiddush, ate, and even hummed some zemiros to herself. She wondered where Osher was at that moment. Was he close by? Perhaps he had davened in one of the shuls she had seen today on her walks; she’d noticed at least seven or eight of them. When she’d spoken to Miriam last week to arrange the rental, Miriam had given her some details about the city and the frum community. Apparently, the shuls she’d seen were only a sampling as there were more than fifty shuls in Acco. She felt an urge to go out for another walk after bentching, but worried that perhaps it wasn’t safe enough. After all, this was Acco, and it was nighttime… She hadn’t yet decided whether to go to sleep or read a book when there was a light knock at the door. “Miriam!” she exclaimed, and forced the biggest smile she could manage. “I figured I’d pop in for a short visit,” her hostess replied. She held out a tray with cake, a bottle of juice, some cups, and a small bowl of white pumpkin seeds. “How often do I have a guest?” “Come inside,” Ariella said, as if

she were the hostess. She took a seat on the bed and left Miriam the lone chair. “The flowers are from you, right?” Miriam said. “I see you have an identical bouquet for yourself.” Ariella smiled. “I guessed. Thank you very much. They’re really pretty.” They sat in silence. Ariella politely took a slice of cake and complimented the baker. Miriam also took some cake and made a bracha, but her eyes were fixed on the juice bottle. “I hope it was okay for you here tonight,” she

What would happen if someone would tell her, Ariella, which occupation to choose, based on its profitability? said suddenly. “Oh, it was excellent,” Ariella assured her. “Really? I felt so uneasy every time I thought of you eating your seudah here, alone… Are you sure it worked out okay?” “Absolutely sure.” “Good.” Miriam leaned back. “So, tell me a little about yourself. Do you work?” “Yes.” Ariella did not like interrogations, but she knew what Miriam did — or rather did not do — for a living, so it was probably appropriate for her to share her own occupation. “I’m a private teacher — kind of like a tutor — for music and math. When I have students,” she added, after a fraction of a second’s thought. “Music and math?” Miriam grinned. “A bit of a strange mix, isn’t it?” “Well, I’m kind of a strange mix myself. I’m both humanistic and realistic, and this is the result. But in general, music is very close —”

“To the teshuvah world,” Miriam completed. “Well, that, too,” Ariella said with a smile. “But I actually meant the closeness between music and math. They have many similarities. Music has a lot of order and rules, and I can sometimes literally see a whole series of equations in a musical piece.” “Well, if you say so. I don’t understand much about either of them.” Miriam stood up. She seemed to be battling with her thoughts, and then she said, “So I’m happy it worked out okay for you tonight.” Ariella nodded, and Miriam wished her a good Shabbos. Ariella was once more alone, and again, the window became her friend. This time, when she tilted her head to a certain angle, she could discern the closely trimmed grass that filled the front courtyard of the building. The wet grass had a scent that Osher had always loved. She wondered if Osher was also smelling cut grass right now, in the middle of the night, instead of sleeping. Looking out of the window, her thoughts wandered. And the truth was, Ariella decided, that she liked being by herself. She could not imagine putting up with someone interfering with what she did, like Miriam had to tolerate. What would happen if someone would tell her, Ariella, which occupation to choose, based on its profitability, or even that she should take in more math students over music ones, because she could charge more for the former than for the latter? Truthfully, she could understand the issue with the meals and the privacy, and she was totally okay with that. The fourth Shabbos after their wedding, Nosson had wanted them to stay home, and they’d done so. And it had been wonderful… “So, did it work out okay for her?” she suddenly heard a voice near the window. “Totally fine,” came Miriam’s voice. “She didn’t seem upset at all.” “That’s good. Imagine if you would have had to bring her into the mess the children made before Shabbos…” There was a pause. “Maybe we’ll be able to invite guests when the chil-

dren get older. For now, it really doesn’t work for me, especially when the house looks like this...” Nosson liked order, too, Ariella recalled. And she had tried her best to keep the house tidy. But if not for Nosson’s overwhelmingly good middos, she had no idea what would have been — because more often than not, the house did not remain in top form for long... And she also had no idea what would have been if she and Nosson would have had children, and those children would have grown up receiving insufficient chinuch with regard to cleaning and orderliness… Ariella stopped. Her thoughts sometimes got out of control when she was tired, and really, it was time to get away from the window and get some sleep. *****

Osher After the Shabbos morning meal, Reb Elazar, Shlomo and I sat down to learn in the shul of the small settlement. It was the first time I’d ever learned b’chavrusa with Rav Elazar. He was a very good study partner and reminded me of the yungerman my father hired to help me with my learning before I registered for mesivta. That young man was also very good, and I tried hard to concentrate and listen to him, but when he asked me questions on the material afterward, I didn’t know a thing. It was just after I’d stopped taking the Concerta because of its side effects. At this point, I haven’t been taking anything for my ADHD for years already; all those medications made me feel horrible, and the only natural thing that didn’t make me feel awful didn’t really help me pay attention in class. But now, when Reb Elazar asked me something on the Gemara, I was able to answer him. He seemed to intuitively grasp those moments when I was with him, and that’s when he told me everything he wanted to say. That’s how it is with me and learning, in general. There are moments when I’m fully “there,” and moments

when I can’t seem to focus. Reb Elazar seemed to wait for those “best moments,” and then — boom — whatever he would say goes straight into my head. I felt good about the learning

After learning we davened Mincha and then went back to the house to eat shalosh seudos, which included cholent made of soy and turnip and I don’t know what else. The Bergs arrange their Shabbos meals like that: Since Shabbos is so short, they eat the first morning meal early and keep it short, with just fish and salads and dessert. Then, for shalosh seudos, they serve the cholent and the rest of the main

course. When shalosh seudos was over, Shlomo and I went to take a nap. I made up with Shlomo that after we’d get up, we’d take a walk around the area. We even promised Reb Elazar’s nephews that they could come with us. But something woke me up early; at first I wasn’t even sure what it was. It felt like my leg was stuck in the metal frame of the bed or something, and I tried to pull it out. It came loose easily, but it hurt, like I’d been scraped by the metal. “Ow,” I murmured. Then I heard a strange noise on the floor next to me, and a moment later I heard Shlomo also say, “Ow!” But his cry was much louder than mine. He was nearly screaming. “What was that?!” he cried, sitting up. “Hey!” I said. “Your cheek is bleeding!” “Osher!” he gasped. “Do you think this is a joke?”

“A joke?” I was indignant. “Do you think I did this to you? I was sleeping!” He didn’t answer, because at that moment he realized that it wasn’t me. We both saw the skinny little fox slip out of the window and through the bars until it was out of our sight. “It bit me!” Shlomo groaned. “That fox bit my cheek!” By now my foot was throbbing. I glanced at it — and yes, I was also bleeding from the visible teeth marks on my skin. “Me too,” I said. “On my foot.” I stood up carefully. “But I think I can stand… So it probably wasn’t such a serious bite.” Shlomo got up to the sink and washed his face with a lot of water. “It’s not a deep bite,” he said, looking at himself in the small mirror. “But it really hurts. I’m going to ask the Bergs if they have some antiseptic cream and a Band-Aid.” To be continued…

FROM THE SEFER “HAKESER VEHAKAVOD”:

The Chazon Ish, zt”l has clearly stated that one can tell the level of a woman’s fear of Heaven based

on the way she covers her hair.

Harav Moshe Yehoshua Landau zt”l (one of the closest talmidim of the Chazon Ish) wrote a poignant letter on Erev Yom Kippur in which he encouraged women to fulfill the mitzvah of kisui rosh in its ultimate form: •

After investigating the matter, people will conclude that Jewish women began wearing sheitels in public due to the pressure of the goyim.

Even if the sheitel can be considered a covering, why would someone want to wear a covering that makes it look like her hair is uncovered, which is the greatest shame for a woman (as expounded on in the topic of the sotah)?

Isn’t it beautiful to go back to covering our heads like our holy grandmothers from previous generations did?

Aren’t people concerned about the problem of chillul Hashem?

What will future generations say to sheitels that are not recognizable as such? (It is interesting to note that this was written over twenty years ago, when the sheitels were not as natural looking as the sheitels of today)

We beseech every yerai Shamayim to fear the words of Hashem, take these true words to heart and be the first ones (to upgrade) in this area. And they will serve as an inspiration to others to return to, and purify themselves before, Hashem. In the merit of this strengthening of kedushah in this world, may Hashem sanctify us from above and shine upon us the Shechinah, so that we can truly come close to Him. Moshe Yehoshua Landau

FRUIT CRUMBLES By: Leah Stern Photography by: C . Tarkieltaub

Fruit desserts are always enjoyed. Come summer with her season-ripe variety, you can easily take them up a level. Most crumbles are so simple to make that they can be mixed in a sturdy bag. Both crumbs and prepared fruit freeze well, especially when frozen separately — the crumbs in a bag and the fruit in the parchment-lined pan you intend to bake them in. Save these recipes or prepare them now, freeze them raw and bake them before yom tov. To bake the frozen crumble, slightly defrost the crumbs and place half on the bottom of a pan. Invert the frozen fruit on top of the prepared crumbs. Peel off the parchment paper. Top with the remaining crumbs. Increase the baking time the recipe calls for by up to 30 minutes.

TIRES With a lifespan of about four to five years, there’s someplace all these black doughnuts have to go. The U.S. used to be full of Tire Mountains, but thankfully, since 80% of scrap tires are being repurposed in this environmentally-conscious era, most of those have shrunk and many have entirely disappeared. That is not to say that there isn’t anything to see. Colorado, especially, is still famous for its tire dumps. The CH2E Waste Tire Monofill and Tire Recycling Center in Colorado is considered the largest North American tire pile. The 175-acre Rattlesnake Solar Farm was previously known as Tire Mountain, and it reportedly boasted some 80 million scrap tires at one time in its heyday at the beginning of the 21st century.

The largest tire graveyard, home to some 7 million tires buried in dug-out holes in Kuwait, made headlines last week when it burst into flames, releasing great plumes of toxic black smoke into the air. So great were these billows of smoke, that they showed up on satellite images from space. The risks of dumping these masses of hazardous combustible material have long since raised concerns, having many push for recycling the tires instead of dumping them in such a high-temperature, dry climate.

ALL BIKES MOTORCYCLE JUNKYARD Rye, Arizona Arizona’s dry climate is the ideal conditions for old vehicles, since rust is caused by moisture in the air. Legend has it that in 1988, All Bikes proprietor Ron Adler, brought his collection of cycles from Washington to Arizona in eight semi-trailers. This is said to have been the largest motorcycle junkyard of all time, though this hard-earned accumulation — and 40 years of work by its owner — was destroyed in a fire in 2013. In its lifetime, it was a site that people haunted both for its sale of parts and its vivid sight.

SHARED BICYCLES This may look like an intricate tapestry or symbolic painting, but if you look closely you’ll see that the endless expanse is made up of bicycles. This is just one graveyard that contains some of the thousands and thousands of Chinese “shared bikes” that are abandoned every year. This field in Hangzhou has around 84,000 abandoned bicycles. Many cyclists make use of the “first hour free” shared bike companies offer, and then have no compunction about unceremoniously dumping the bikes in inconvenient places where vehicular, pedestrian or cycling traffic is blocked. The bike-sharing companies, too slow in reclaiming them, were leaving too many to rust until authorities stepped in. And until China figures out how to regulate their bike-sharing industry, these are collecting rust on huge sites like this one.

T

raveling with a two-week-old baby should be illegal.

I realize this when I am miles away from home, just another car on the endless ribbon of highway. My baby hasn’t stopped screaming since we left, and my other kids are taking travel sickness to new levels.

The new CD that we bought especially for this trip drones on in the background, something about sharing and love and friendship. No one is listening. I try deep breathing, mindfulness, everything, and remind myself that there is no way we can skip this bar mitzvah. Menachem is my brother’s only son, and we’ve been hearing about this great event since the day he was born. It’s not his fault that his big day lands two weeks after my own son’s arrival, so here we are. It’ll be nice once we get there, I know, but now I’m giving myself the liberty to kvetch. Someone wails that they need the bathroom, another howls that he’s starving. And through it all, the baby cries on. * * * * *

The bar mitzvah is gorgeous, the company even better. My baby is blessedly asleep, and I’m so thankful that I’m in total denial about the fact that this means he won’t sleep a wink on the way home. The bar mitzvah ends too soon, a flurry of hugs and smiles and air kisses to Elter-Babi. Menachem beams, looking adorably stiff in his new hat and suit, and I know it was worth it. I just hope that thought will keep me going on the long ride home * * * * *

Long ride home is an understatement. We’ve been driving for only an hour, but my darling little prince is keeping anyone who could sleep in a car wide awake.

Outside there is silence, a long necklace of lights glowing starkly against the inky black. I wonder if the screaming can be heard out the window. He needs to be held, my baby, not wriggling and arching his back in the impossibly stiff car seat. My daughter looks green, and I hand her a bag quickly. The incessant crying stops, for a second, and I think that my son is probably just catching a breath of air before launching into it again. I don’t dare hope, even for a moment, that there might be quiet. But miracle of miracles, there is. I sag against the seat, so grateful — and what was that noise? It’s a low, grating, awful sound. I turn to my husband, quirk up an eyebrow. I don’t think I want to know. “The engine,” he murmurs, forehead wrinkling. Uh-oh. It’s been on its last legs for a while, and we thought that if we’d ignore the issue, it might just go away on its own. Apparently, it’s not going anywhere, and has decided to die here, in no man’s land, miles away from home. Talk about good timing. * * * * *

I sit on the cold asphalt of the highway’s shoulder, darkness wrapping itself around me. In the background I vaguely hear the voice of my husband, good soul that he is, calling the AAA. He could call the police, firemen or army corps, for all I care. I want to get home. (And I am not mentioning a word about my baby. You don’t want to know.) The scene isn’t getting prettier as it gets later, and my kids are not finding this funny either.

T

hirty years ago, Rabbi Simcha Bunim Cohen published his halachic masterwork, The Shabbos Kitchen. Tens of thousands turned to it to understand the often complex halachos of preparing food and other kitchen activities on Shabbos. With the passing of time and massive changes in technology, many new questions have been raised. For example, what issues are raised by modern-day water coolers, warming drawers, and digital features on refrigerators? The Shabbos Kitchen — Expanded Edition includes ten completely new chapters discussing halachos and scenarios not included in the earlier volume. In addition, Rabbi Cohen has heard countless shailos about Shabbos observance in these decades, and he has incorporated many of them into existing chapters.

Out in the Arizona desert one might be forgiven for claiming to see giant birds, their great bodies stretched across the sand as far as the eye can see… After all, the unrelenting sun does play tricks with the mind, does it not?

But these birds of abnormal proportions are not a mirage; they’re planes that have often flown their last and have landed here to slowly pass life on to newer generations. Welcome to The Boneyard.

Here at the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base boneyard (more accurately called the Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group, or AMARG), you’ll be allowed to board a bus for just a few dollars and tour through a significant piece of aerial history. With more than 2,600 acres of storage space, this boneyard is the largest in the world and reserved exclusively for federal use. The aircraft that land here come from all sectors of the government, ranging from the FBI to NASA, and run the gamut from helicopter to cargo plane. While many aircraft have come to end their careers with a final flight into The Boneyard, others have come to make AMARG their temporary home until they can take to the skies once again. 106

The Boro Park View

Divvied Up When aircraft first arrive at AMARG, they’re divided into four categories, depending on their storage needs: The 1000s, as they’re called, are the lucky long-termers who

have the potential to fly once again but are granted a chance to rest up. These aircraft have come to The Boneyard to be preserved and tucked away — safe from the machines that revel in the eerie grind of metal dissection. Though many of these big birds will be reinstated into active service, their roles may be modified. Hundreds of F-16 Fighting Falcons, for instance, will undergo conversion from battle-ready warriors to hunted and on-the-run. With some swapping of machinery, these war planes are transformed into remote-controlled drones and used as moving target practice for a newer generation of aircraft.

F-16 fighter planes are transformed into QF-16 unmanned aerial targets.

The 2000 aircraft grouping is also called the “cann birds,” for it is from them that material is harvested and transplanted into still-active aircraft, with those “cannibals” making away with their wings or other parts… The 2000s save the government (and American taxpayers!) extremely heavy loads of cash each year that would otherwise be spent on the purchase or manufacture of new parts. The 3000s are the “hi-bye” sort, often just stopping by for a quick vacation in the Arizona sun. They’re the type that

Parts are salvaged from the the 2000s to be implanted in active aircraft.

requires the most maintenance, keeping them ready to fly at a moment’s notice. The 4000 group is the most sorry of the lot, with the aircraft here marked for disposal. When all their usable parts have been salvaged, these planes will be completely destroyed.

Pickling Planes and Mothballing Machines Planes intended for storage must be “pickled” to preserve their innards. This takes place at the “Flush Farm” (because where else would you pickle planes?). There, the fuel system is emptied and

reloaded with an oil that acts as a preservative, coating everything to prevent decay. The plane is also drained of other fluids, and any potentially dangerous parts — such as the ejection seats — are disabled. Then the plane heads to the “wash rack.” Over at the wash rack, the plane undergoes a good scrubbing. This deep cleaning helps prevent decay, especially for planes that have flown in tropical locations, as salt water is highly corrosive. The workers who wash the planes have the hardest of jobs, scrubbing the planes under the hot sun while wearing plastic protective gear to keep them safe from the industrial-strength degreasers used.

After being washed down, a plane often undergoes a white glove inspection, and then the plane is sealed up. Special tape is used to cover any seams, while heavy cloth provides a protective barrier for engine outlets and inlets. The aircraft is covered with two coats of easy-to-peel black paint, then topped with a coat of white paint. These special measures prevent the wind, sand and the occasional rain from affecting the plane, and the thickness of the paint is measured to the millimeter to ensure the best protection. The white coat of paint, specifically, helps deflect the sun’s rays from raising the inside of the plane to unusually high temperatures that

Planes in the 4000s head to the chop shop after all salvageable parts have been removed.

could put the electronics at risk of damage. At this point, the planes are considered “mothballed” — ready to be settled into their spot in the desert. To keep these mammoth machines from flying away, they’re chained down, with some planes requiring as many as 72 chains to hold them in place! Once they’re settled in storage, a preservation team checks each plane every six months for signs of wear and tear. Planes in the 1000 group are required to undergo the whole mothballing process every four years.

only its propeller tips and tail could be seen. Despite that, seventeen years later it was dug out of the ice and put back into service for another decade before heading over to The Boneyard for a well-deserved retirement. Though the bus tours at The Boneyard are said to be fascinating for those intrigued by aviation, visitors can’t get up close and personal with the mammoth planes, having to make do with seeing them from a seat on the bus. That’s why the commanders at the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base dreamed of opening a museum that would showcase metal war veterans, allowing the public to meet these giants face-to-face. Located right near the Air Force base, the Pima Air and Space Museum allows visitors to explore 80 acres of Air Force history. Some of the aircraft found here are of the types that carried and dropped the atom bombs on Japanese cities, broke the sound barrier, and shuttled presidents around the country. For those who love aviation, this is the stuff dreams are made of.

Like this airplane, another Lockheed LC-130, the Phoenix was entombed in snow but eventually returned to service.

CITY ISLAND

After reviewing some of the many uninhabited islands around New York, we turn our focus to one of the islands that have become part of the city proper. Appropriately named City Island, this Bronx neighborhood has turned into a premier fishing and boating center enjoyed by many. 116

The Boro Park View

www.thebpview.com · 718.408.8770

In 1654, an English physician named Thomas Pell made a bold purchase: 50,000 acres of Native American land of what would later become prime real estate in Westchester and the Bronx. The Dutch and British continued fighting over the region in the following decades, but Pell retained control of his massive asset, even being forced to pledge allegiance to the Dutch for a time. Among these large tracts of land were a number of smaller islands in the region, collectively referred to as Pelham Islands. We previously discussed Hart Island, one of the largest prizes among the Pelham Islands, but City Island is the undisputed king of the group. At 230 acres in size, it is home to a population of roughly 4,500 residents. It is part of New York City, but if one wouldn’t know better,

they’d be forgiven for thinking they were deep in New England in one of its quaint boating and fishing towns. But first, some history. Thomas Pell’s heir ended up selling the island a few decades later, and it went through multiple owners until an ambitious plan by one Benjamin Palmer saw the island set on the path to its current name and function. Palmer led a group who planned to turn the island — which wasn’t part of New York City for well over another century — into a competitive maritime equal of the big city. Great Minnefords Island, as some called it at the time, was rebranded as New City Island, and work began on developing the next big thing in the Long Island Sound. His luck soon ran out. When the British took control of the area during the Revolutionary War, they showed little regard for Palmer, who was a proud patriot, and his plans. He was forced to leave the island, never to return. While the island never turned into the port city Palmer had dreamed of, it would eventually become a successful center of nautical commerce. An early enterprise on the island was producing salt from evaporated seawater, but the busi-

ness struggled as there was no bridge to the city at the time, making shipping difficult. Next was a thriving oyster fishing industry, but that didn’t either last long. By the 1860s, shipbuilding had become the island’s distinguishing feature, leading to growth in many related industries. During both world wars, shipbuilding capabilities were channeled toward the raging war efforts, and the local shipyards produced tugboats, minesweepers and special crafts used in beach landings. After World War II, the island became a premier producer of yachts, manufacturing a number of sailing boats that have won the America’s Cup, a prestigious racing award.

CITY ISLAND TODAY In 1895, City Island residents voted to become a part of New York City after they were promised a new bridge in exchange. The wooden bridge, possibly built in 1873, was replaced by a steel structure in 1901. It stood until 2016, when it was demolished and replaced with a new and improved structure. Earlier plans were for a larger cable bridge, but local residents protective of the area’s unique charm argued that the large structure didn’t fit their vibe. The plans were scrapped, and the new bridge, also called City Island Causeway, is lower and shorter than the first proposed structure, without any larger towers. The island today is mostly known for the dozens of popular seafood restaurants that attract visitors from across the city. Public transportation leads to and from

the island, making it a convenient close-but-far attraction. The quiet, suburban-like seaside locale is also home to marinas and yacht clubs enjoyed by the wealthy and elite.

HIGH ISLAND

Right off City Island, another Pelham island plays a role in daily city life, though not in a way one can easily notice. High Island is connected to City Island with a footbridge (it’s barricaded and privately owned, so don’t even think about it), as well as a thin strip of land that’s visible at low tide.

Old City Island Bridge (now demolished)

Why it’s called High Island isn’t fully clear. Some suggest that it has to do with its location on the map, high up on the northern tip of the city. Others suggest that it may stem from the Dutch haai, which means sharks. Back in the day, it was apparently called Shark Island due to the sharks abundant in the area at the time. Another suggestion is that the center of the island is elevated, or higher, than many of the surrounding areas. Up until the early 1960s, the island served as a summer bungalow colony of sorts, with cottages available for rent. It was then purchased by CBS to make way for powerful transmitters and antennas New City Island Causeway Bridge 118

that would broadcast its local stations. Despite vehement opposition from City Island residents (in a battle that still continues today, as the owners try to expand their towers’ capacities), they were allowed to go ahead with their plans. A plane crash in 1967 took out the original tower and knocked the stations off air for a while. Eventually, two towers were built to replace it, one reaching over 50 stories high and the second a backup tower of over half that size. Today’s technologies allow for engineers to monitor the critical equipment remotely, but until just fourteen years ago, a caretaker and his family lived on High Island full time. The farmhouse used as a residence still stands, yet the island has now joined its many uninhabited peers in and around New York City.

CHIMNEY SWEEPS ISLANDS

High Island as viewed from nearby Orchard Beach.

There isn’t really much relevant history to share about these two tiny islets that are also part of the Pelham Islands, but the peculiar name they carry makes their mention a must. Legends abound over how the islands got their name. Some suggest that their shape resembles old chimney sweep tools, where two rocks would be tied to the sweeping tools to weigh them down as they went through the chimneys. Another legend is that a chimney sweeper who struck it rich bought the land. A further guess is that during low tide, the island looks black like a chimney. Possession of the island changed a number of times, with some eccentric individuals setting up cottages or using the space for boating and recreation. In 1913, two young men from the reformatory for troubled boys on nearby Hart Island escaped and swam to Chimney Sweeps, where they stole a rowboat and used it to reach the mainland. In 1939, the city’s Parks Department took possession of Chimney Sweeps Islands, and since then it has been home to many bird species, with some kayakers enjoying its strategic location as a resting point. The Boro Park View

Aviation enthusiasts, this event is for you! Watch an impressive lineup of aircraft perform stunts and acrobatics in the air as some of the nation’s top military and civilian air show performers will soar over Orange County Airport.

Six Air Force “Thunderbirds” will present precision aerial maneuvers to exhibit the capabilities of modern, high-performance aircraft. Their demonstration will be a mix of formation flying and solo routines, which will demonstrate the training and precision of Air Force pilots.

The West Point Parachute Team will showcase their unique skills, with freefall demonstrations by West Point cadets.

The U.S. Navy F-18 Rhino Demo will feature the full capabilities of this twin-engine supersonic fighter jet, which can be launched and landed onboard an aircraft carrier. With a top speed of almost twice the speed that sound travels, or approximately 1,200 miles per hour, this show will be fascinating.

The L-39 Cold War Era jet will also be part of this year’s performer lineup.

The world-famous Geico Skytypers will perform precision maneuvers, as well as “type” giant messages in the sky. Skytyping produces a letter every four seconds in a dot-matrix pattern. The messages are as tall as the Empire State Building and are visible for 15 miles in any direction!

A message “typed” by a Geico Skytyper

The show will also include a demo by the F-22 Raptor duo — the fastest and most “flexible” fighter jets in the world — and a fascinating aerobatics performance by acclaimed pilot Mike Wiskus that will leave spectators mesmerized as he loops, rolls, performs low-altitude maneuvers, cuts a ribbon while inverted and makes a mosquito run down a tree-lined narrow river. If this title brings one image to mind, I’ll bet it’s flying cars. When will those become a reality? And what else is new? The race is on to see what’s out and what’s still coming.

Flying Cars It is bound to happen. Easing traffic and environmental concerns with flying vehicles is in the cards for loads of auto companies, but I wouldn’t hold my breath just yet. Cars in the air means big changes to road travel as we know it. There are hearty promises for the future, though. Japan’s SkyDrive is among the many who’ve been hard at work building and testing eVTOLs (electric vertical takeoff and landing), and although proving to the FAA that these small aircraft are incredibly safe can take many years, some eVTOL firms like Joby Aviation believe they can have the fruits of their labor certified and begin commercial passenger travel as soon as 2024.

Futuristic Features Car Jargon Horsepower is the equivalent of the work of a horse compared to the power in an engine. One horse doing 33,000 footpounds of work in one minute would equal one horsepower. So a hypercar with a whopping 500 hp engine is in essence a car with a 500-strong horse team under its hood. Autonomous driving usually refers to self-driving vehicles or transport systems that move without the intervention of a human driver. A turbo engine is an engine using a turbocharger — an add-on part that uses recycled exhaust gases to boost performance. You’ll see “turbocharged” used as a metaphor in literature for good reason. A hypercar is a high-performance sports car that allows superb driving performance.

130

The Boro Park View

While the crazier cars exist in concept, existing lines keep upping the ante on luxury, with features enjoyed by the top tier first and then trickling down to benefit the average consumer. Cool features already on the road include the in-car assistant in Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class; you bring it to attention by saying, “Hey, Mercedes.” And my personal favorite is in the Kia Telluride: Quiet Mode to restrict sound to the front speakers of the car, and Driver Talk, which sends the driver’s voice to the rear seats via the speakers. Awesome way to quiet the bickering in the back!

By: Chana Gluck

In Concept Every year, car firms up the drama at auto shows with the concept cars they unveil. Concept cars are a way of showing off the company’s prowess to the public, as well as gathering feedback on what the public wants in cars. Much of what is shown leans to the very new and radical. Some are eventually mass-produced. What’s on the wish list?

Lotus Evija

Honda Augmented Driving Concept

After an eleven-year hiatus from serving up a new vehicle, British brand Lotus is prepping a beast of unchecked power. The new Evija (e-VY-a) is an all-electric vehicle with a top speed of 216 mph (yikes!), a promise of getting from 0 to 100 mph in under three seconds, and a bewildering 2,000 horsepower. For comparison, a 2022 Honda Odyssey has 280 horsepower! This monster is in production as we speak, and since only 130 are being made, just a tiny slice of society will get to be owners of one, for $2 million apiece.

Honda is seriously getting ready for the autonomous future but wants to ensure that customers can still enjoy the thrill of driving if they wish. So their Augmented Driving Concept features a seamless transition from autonomous to semi-autonomous driving, with sensors in the vehicle continuously reading the user’s intention to shift between modes. Honda is proud to claim they’ve reinvented the steering wheel for this roadster, so the driver can pat, pull and push the thing to start, slow and accelerate.

Lightyear One

Czinger 21C

Just the name sounds straight out of futuristic sci-fi. This car will roar along for 450 miles per charge from its solar roof panels, theoretically having the ability to go for months without needing to be plugged in. Can we get that for phones?

Have you processed 3D printing yet? How about a 3D-printed car? The Czinger 21C hypercar is the world’s first of a kind, with 3D-printed parts, a twin-turbo V8 engine, and 0 to 62 mph time of just 1.9 seconds. Here’s to hoping that travelers’ organs stay in formation after that jolt! And if you still want this model, good luck on getting your hands on one of the 80 being produced.

Futuristic Flops

What’s really happening

For the most part, concept cars remain just that. Because car designers go so wild with concepts, it’s just a hardy few that make it to production. Here are some of the wackier left-behinds:

Peugeot Egochine This odd-looking three-wheeled thing is theoretically powered by hydrogen fuel cells. The driver sits all the way back there, and how that works out for steering is quite the enigma. But it was a finalist in Peugeout’s own retrofuturist competition.

Peugeot Honey B This would have been a huge hit with the kids and is just fun to look at. It was meant to represent a futuristic SUV, with its cockpitstyle opening for each occupant and plexiglass all around for a panoramic view.

Tata AirPod It’s a real pity this one didn’t work out, because it was supposed to run on air — how much more cost-effective can you get? This concept made waves a few years ago and then went quiet. Murmurings about a production schedule never morphed into real action, which again, is really a shame, since Tata claims it would cover a 124-mile range at a cost of $2.

Autonomous cars also feature strongly in auto plans, so get ready to relax while your four wheels do their thing. As for 2050 cars? They predict a driverless vehicle shaped like a smooth pod that can change color with a few phone taps. In case one is bored with all that non-driving, you know.

132

The Boro Park View

with cars in the future? Allelectric is moving in strong and steady, with everything from minis to trucks being produced that way to save the environment. In fact, major firms like GM, Ford, Rivian and Tesla are in a furious race to get electric pickup trucks on the market very soon, with Tesla’s Cybertruck leading in terms of performance and its extremely futuristic facade.
