The boys pored over all of the on the secondpictures ranging from old cars to futuristic to-last page. cars, from piles of tires to abandoned bikes, and from scores of retired airplanes to air shows. (Inbox, Issue 96) I’m responding to a comment by Rabbi Friedman that appeared in your Inbox regarding the issur of leaning on a tree on Shabbos. See the last Magen Avraham in siman 336, which states that a healthy person may lean on a strong tree that doesn’t sway. This seems to be the case in the picture mentioned. V. Friedman

RE: REACHING BEYOND THE WALLS

(Inbox, Issue 80) Several months ago, your readers expressed interest in writing to Esther bas Ana. Perhaps a recent setback can be the impetus for getting more women to do so. Esther has been cruelly imprisoned in Iowa for years, and she is a m’vakesh. Whoever is able to write to her should do so. Even letting her know you are praying for her and giving her names to pray for (she is part of Klal Yisroel and would greatly appreciate not only knowing

that she is being prayed for, but that she has an important contribution to others in praying for us) mean so much to her. She was originally noticed for her kindness, and then it was discovered that she is Jewish and trying to learn about Yiddishkeit. So here is the setback: It seems the correspondence rules have been tightened again. The last two pieces of correspondence I sent were returned, and there was a sticker the prison placed on the letter that read that “Only correspondence sent on 8½-inch white paper will be allowed. Cardstock, greeting cards, photo postcards, glitter, artwork or other attachments or embellishments are not allowed, and the paper must be clear of visible stains. The return address must have the complete address, and the name must match the signature on the letter. You must print and sign your whole name at the end of the letter.” I had previously sent Torah newsletters with photos that are part of the newsletters and other such items, and they had arrived. But now, though as far as I know letters are allowed to be up to four pages long, they must be on white letter-size paper. Keep up your great work. A good, sweet year to all of you. This Sunday found me doing the unavoidable: spending a long day at the shoe store. (Appreciative shout-out to their staff: I don’t know how you deal with this day after day!) I took my assigned number, did some errands, and then returned for a long wait until my turn. Dear co-shopper, when you told me that you are number 40 and tried to figure out who is still ahead of you, you probably didn’t realize that my memory is in working order, and I was therefore surprised when you took advantage of one of the “absent numbers” to get an earlier turn. It was also interesting to note that the most preferred fitter was available at just the minute that you volunteered yourself as number sixteen. It didn’t affect me personally, as my turn was after number 40. I just took affront on behalf of the other families patiently waiting their turn, and it made me upset that a person is not embarrassed to abuse the system and the people who honor it. I hope your kids enjoy their shoes, and that you learn to await your turn. Over Number 40 THE BORO PARK VIEW WELCOMES YOUR COMMENTS, FEEDBACK AND LETTERS.

PARSHAS KI SEITZEI A War of Willpower

“Ki seitzei lamilchamah al ovecha — when you go out to war against your enemies…” (Devarim 21:10). The seforim hakedoshim say that these words can be applied to the milchemes hayetzer, when a person goes out to war against his yetzer hara. According to this approach, how can we explain the continuation of the pasuk, “Unsano Hashem Elokecha —and Hashem will deliver them in your hands”? THE LEGENDARY MAGGID, Rav Sholom Schwadron, repeated this tale, which he heard from a rav in America. “As the chaplain of one of the local hospitals, I get to see a lot,” the rav told the maggid. “One day, a young Jewish man was brought in to the ER. According to the report, he’d been in a serious car accident. Indeed, the victim was in bad shape; he looked more dead than alive! The doctors practically gave up on him on the spot. ‘His hours are numbered,’ they said.” From various documents in his pockets, the hospital staff was able to identify the victim. They tracked down his sister, who lived locally, and requested that she come to the hospital immediately. Seeing her poor brother’s fate caused the woman to break down. Between her sobs, she thought of their elderly father, already residing in an assisted living facility. He should probably be notified of the circumstances. After all, this is his son, she rationalized. Still, she couldn’t fathom his pain. How would he endure such an unbearable besurah? No question, the message had to be relayed with utmost sensitivity and tact. And who got the job if not for the hospital chaplain? “I set out for the old age home right away,” the rav continued. “My mind was awash with words and emotions. How

was I to relay this heartrending message? How could I tell this old man that his young son was suddenly on his deathbed?” By the time the rav arrived at the home, his mind was made up: He could not tell it to the old man; he would have to show it. The man would have to see the situation for himself. The rav brought the elderly man to the hospital and sat him down at his son’s bedside. The patient lay motionless, entirely unconscious. All eyes were on the old man. How would he take this? To everyone’s surprise, the man seemed detached, almost indifferent. Soon the doctor came around, and he explained, without mincing words, that it was only a matter of time. Still, the old man was unmoved. It seemed as if he hadn’t heard a word. The onlookers thought he wasn’t all there. The rav spoke up, “What do you say?” “What should I say? I want to go home.” “Do you realize what your son’s situation is?” “He will be fine; I have nothing to worry about,” the old man said resolutely. By now, the rav was sure the man was not lucid, and he repeated himself. “Do you realize what’s going on with your

son?” “He’ll be fine,” the old man replied. “Please take me home.” He paused and said, “I know you’re thinking I’m losing it. Let me explain. When I was young, I lived in Radin. The Chofetz Chaim was in the process of preparing his Mishnah Berurah for print, and he wanted some local baalei batim to learn through it to make sure it was comprehensible even for laymen. I was in that group of learners, and I learned before the Chofetz Chaim a number of times. In gratitude, the Chofetz Chaim bentched me with two things: That I will merit arichas yamim, and that none of my children will pass away in my lifetime. I haven’t yet reached true longevity, and I have this promise that my son will not pass away before I do. “As I said, he will be fine, and I would like to go home.” The rav decided he must follow up. What would be the end of this story? A few days passed, and against all odds, the patient, who had been unconscious, suddenly opened his eyes. From there, a recovery process began, and soon the son was on the streets like any other able being.

“I know you’re thinking I’m losing it. Let me explain.”

* * * * * When Rav Sholom Schwadron repeated this anecdote, he expounded, “There is no explanation for this story other than the mishnah in Avos (2:4): “Bateil retzoncha mipnei retzono, k’dei she’yivateil retzon acheirim mipnei retzoncha.” The Bartenura says that the word “acheirim” alludes to Hakadosh Baruch Hu — if a person abolishes his own will for the will of Hashem, he merits having Hashem abolish His will for him. The Chofetz Chaim was careful with shemiras halashon all his life. He abolished his own inclinations, and Hashem gave him the strength that whatever he said from his mouth materialized. * * * * * When a person goes out to war against his yetzer hara and is careful not to submit to the yetzer hara’s will, but rather abolishes his own will for the ratzon Hashem, the pasuk says, “...unsano Hashem Elokecha b’yadecha,” he will merit siyata d’Shmaya and to have Hashem negate His ratzon for him.

Did You Know? Reb Simcha Bunim of Peshischa commented on the words of this week’s parsha, “Zachor es asher asah lecha Amalek…” that words are written in their singular form because Amalek only has power when there is a lack of achdus in Klal Yisroel.

No matter how the ordeal ends, that traumatic period remains etched in the psyche of all involved, looked back upon with dread and sadness. In a nutshell, that is precisely what Refuah Helpline has successfully worked to change in the community over the past decade. Along the way, they’ve also changed the way people in the community receive treatment from the medical community and they’ve changed lives for the better. In addition to the referrals and case management, a diligent team works the world of research, networking with experts and traveling to medical conferences to ensure that they are on top of the latest medical advancements. Far from being just a resource for those fighting cancer or other deadly diseases, the organization’s capabilities have led people to turn to them with help for everything from babies born with rare genetic disorders to routine medical questions and referrals. Refuah Helpline is no longer an obscure chesed group, and when they opened their hearts to the community last year, over $2,500,000 in donations poured in. These funds directly assisted thousands of families — families in the

While dealing with the crushing pain of having a sick loved one, the creeping fears of the worst and juggling the responsibilities of keeping life going for the healthy and arranging the best possible care for the patient overwhelms the home. To alleviate that, Refuah Helpline doesn’t just help; they make each case theirs. This was evident during our visit to their bustling office. Years of connections and lobbying meant instant access to the nation’s best medical minds. Medical transfers were arranged on demand. Tests were scheduled, administered and analyzed with breathtaking speed. The afflicted’s every need was met with unmatched efficiency. In a world full of tzaros, the community has learned to trust Refuah Helpline to perform miracles. And as the calls kept increasing during our visit, so did the number of office staff present at the dozens of desks filling the office to capacity. As preparations are made for next week’s massive campaign appropriately named ‫לב‬/LIVE, one Refuah staff member tells us, “If people could listen for one day to the pain and fear on the other end of the line here, we would never have to do any fundraising again!” It is late that night as I sit down outside to make sense of what we saw and try to find the proper words to write it up. The loud and incessant chirping of the crickets trigger flashbacks to those ominous phone rings that wouldn’t stop. CHAPTER 21 RECAP: After trying to enlist the support of Shmuel Primo from Yerushalayim, Shabbesai Tzvi and Nattan return to Gaza for Shavuos. Deep into an exalted Shavuos night, with the Gaza rabbis present, Nattan’s body is overtaken by violent tremors after which he announces Shabbesai Tzvi as Moshiach in a dramatic, disembodied manner.

W

ord of the events that took place in Gaza flashed through the other communities of Eretz Yisroel like wildfire. In the Jewish quarter of Yerushalayim, a meeting of the leading rabbis was quickly convened in the home of Rav Yaakov Chagiz. “My friends, we are faced with a grave problem,” began Rav Yaakov. “I’m sure you’ve all heard the shocking news from Gaza.” Everyone nodded. “Today Gaza, tomorrow Yerushalayim,” he continued. “There’s no doubt in my mind that we can expect an assault on our city by this false Moshiach. Probably very soon. And it grieves me deeply to say that my own former disciple, Nattan Haazati, claims to be his prophet. What are we going to do?” “How do you know that Shabbesai Tzvi is a false Moshiach?” asked Shmuel Primo. “What kind of question is that?” spluttered Rav Yaakov. “The man utters the Shem Hameforash at will and does other absolutely prohibited and

strange acts. He makes a mockery of our holy Torah. How can you accept such a man as Moshiach?” “I don’t accept him. Nor do I reject him.” “But how can you even entertain the thought? Wherever he has gone he has been banished by the rabbis.” “He has also performed great miracles.” “Possibly,” said Rav Yaakov with a shrug. “But what of it? Even if he does have extraordinary powers, as some people claim, these powers do not come from a holy source but from the kelipah.” “Rav Yaakov, have you ever met Shabbesai Tzvi?” asked Mattisyahu Bloch. “Only once and very briefly,” replied Rav Yaakov. “I thanked him when he returned from Cairo with the money for the qadi.” “Then perhaps you are misjudging him,” said Mattisyahu Bloch. “Perhaps if you knew him you would feel otherwise toward him. I hear he is an exceedingly holy person.” “Nonsense,” fumed Rav Yaakov. “He is a false Moshiach, a brazen impostor, and we cannot let him into

Yerushalayim.” “I tend to agree with Mattisyahu, Rav Yaakov,” said Shmuel Primo. “Shabbesai Tzvi is a man of great learning and spiritual powers. If he claims to be Moshiach, we might do well to listen closely. As you yourself have mentioned, your own disciple, Nattan Haazati, has become his prophet.” “Nattan is blinded by his own burning ambition,” said Rav Yaakov sadly. “What he has done has brought me much heartache. I’ve sent him messages to abandon his foolish ways, but he has ignored them. No doubt at the suggestion of Shabbesai Tzvi.” Rav Yaakov Tzemach, an elderly sage with a bushy white beard and shaggy gray eyebrows, thumped his fist on the table. “I would like to say something,” he said. “There is no doubt that Shabbesai Tzvi is very learned in Torah and in Kabbalah. But if a person, for whatever reason, reaches too far above himself, the forces of darkness attach themselves to him and try to push him back down. Shabbesai Tzvi was unprepared for the spheres he dared to enter. Perhaps his motivations were for selfish pride and glory, not for the honor of the Almighty. We will never know, but of this I am sure. He draws his power from the forces of darkness he always claims to be battling. They cling to him like leeches, and whatever he does will only bring

harm and tragedy to our people. We must stop him in Yerushalayim. At all costs. We must not lose control of the people. We must convince them to turn their backs on this false Moshiach.” “I suggest we go one step further,” said Rav Yaakov Chagiz. “I suggest we send a message to the qadi to the effect that Shabbesai Tzvi is a dangerous revolutionary who should be barred from coming to Yerushalayim.” “That is an excellent idea,” said Rav Yaakov Tzemach and looked around for approval. Shmuel Primo and Mattisyahu Bloch said nothing. Rav Avraham Amigo and Rav Shmuel Germizan nodded their assent, and the matter was resolved. Another tense week passed in Yerushalayim before Shabbesai Tzvi approached the walls of the old city. The new king sat astride an enormous white stallion and was followed by hundreds of his new subjects. His prophet Nattan and the representatives of the Tribes rode at his side. A contingent of Turkish troops met Shabbesai Tzvi at the gates of Yerushalayim. “Are you the one called Shabbesai Tzvi?” asked the captain. “Yes.” “You have no permission to pass.” “By whose order?” “By the order of the qadi.” “Then take me to the qadi.” “Very well.” After less than half an hour, Shabbesai Tzvi emerged from the qadi’s residence with a broad smile on his face. He mounted his white stallion and headed toward the Jewish quarter, followed by his escort and his subjects. It seemed as if every Jewish man, woman and child in Yerushalayim had turned out to witness the arrival of the pretender to the throne of the House of David. The rabbis of Yerushalayim stood together, shoulder to shoulder, in front of the courtyard of the beis din. The doorways, windows and balconies were crowded with spectators as the royal procession entered the Jewish quarter of the Holy City. There was no cheering as Shabbesai Tzvi passed. Nor was there any jeering. The people watched silently, impassively. Nattan spurred his horse and pulled alongside Shabbesai Tzvi. “Do you realize what is happening?” he asked in a shrill whisper. “The rabbis have banded together against you. First they have denounced you to the qadi. Then they instructed their people to ignore you. How do we break through this wall of silence?” Shabbesai Tzvi surveyed the crowd. Then he turned his burning eyes to the rabbis, letting his gaze sweep from face to face. The tension sizzled across the open space. Shabbesai Tzvi sat up high in the saddle and raised his right hand. “Listen to me, my precious children,” he called out. “You all know me. You know my powers, and you know how devoted I am to the people of Yerushalayim. I have come as the bearer of joyous tidings. The bitter exile that has lasted for so many hundreds and hundreds of years is finally coming to an end. No longer

will we be at the mercy of our oppressors. No longer will we suffer shame or poverty. I come to you as the anointed of the Almighty. He has endowed me with special powers and commanded me to bring His people out of bondage. Exalted people of Yerushalayim, I am Moshiach! Do not stand there with coldness in your eyes. Come, let us sing and dance together. Let us rejoice for the glory of His Name.” His words had a visible effect on the spectators, but the strict warnings of the rabbis were mightier. The crowds remained silent. “I know why you are silent,” shouted Shabbesai Tzvi, his anger intensifying. “You are terrified of your honored rabbis. Well, listen to me. They are too proud to admit that they should pay homage to me. But you, my dear ones, you mustn’t be swayed by their pride. And yes, I am speaking to you rabbis as well. Come forward and join me, and your reward will be great beyond measure. But if you remain silent you must bear the sins of all the people of Yerushalayim. Then your guilt will be great beyond measure, and you shall descend in shame to the abyss. I promise it.” Still, there was only silence, but a silence that crackled with sparks of unbearable tension. “Listen closely,” continued Shabbesai Tzvi. “I shall ride through your streets seven times. Each time will close another ring around the city. Only those who join me before the seventh ring is complete will be saved.” There was no response after the first time Shabbesai Tzvi circled through Yerushalayim. Nor the second time. But as he began his third ring, Shmuel Primo stepped forward to kiss Shabbesai Tzvi’s hand. An exhilarated murmur ran through the crowd, and several other people immediately rushed forward to kiss the hand of the new king. At the start of the fourth ring, Mattisyahu Bloch stepped forward and kissed Shabbesai Tzvi’s hand. By the time Shabbesai Tzvi had completed seven rings, hundreds of Yerushalayim’s Jews, men, women and children, young and old, had joined his royal procession. With growing alarm, the remaining rabbis saw their grip on the people of Yerushalayim rapidly crumbling. After a hasty consultation, they realized there

was only one thing to do. There was no time to waste. Rav Yaakov Chagiz stepped into the street and raised both hands. “Listen carefully, my good people,” he cried. “The beis din of Yerushalayim has decided right here and now to place Shabbesai Tzvi and all of his followers in cherem. Cursed are you, Shabbesai Tzvi. Cursed are all who believe in you. You are forever banished from our holy city. Do not defile our streets with the dust of your feet or our air with the desecrations of your mouth. May the Almighty exact His vengeance on you for all the harm you have done to His people and the shame you have brought to His holy Name.” The impassioned words of Rav Yaakov Chagiz broke Shabbesai Tzvi’s spell, and the people began to melt away to their homes. In a very short time, the streets were eerily empty. Only Shabbesai Tzvi and his followers remained, Primo and Bloch among them. The rabbis also remained. Nattan’s face turned livid with rage. “What have you done, you misguided old men?” he stormed at the rabbis. “How dare you stand in the way of Moshiach?” “Come, Nattan,” said Shabbesai Tzvi. “Let’s go. Yerushalayim will have to wait. Its leaders and their followers will be swept away, and better people will come take their place.” “It is unforgivable,” seethed Nattan. As Shabbesai Tzvi’s royal procession reached the end of the street, Nattan spun his horse around and stood up in the stirrups. “Mark my words, miserable people of Yerushalayim,” he shouted at the top of his lungs. “Even though I cannot see you, I know you are hiding behind your shutters. By my power as the prophet of Moshiach, I remove Yerushalayim from its position as the holiest city in Eretz Yisroel. The spinelessness and treachery of its people have brought disgrace upon her. And it shall remain this way until better people come to take your place, or until you yourselves come on your knees to ask the forgiveness of the king on whom you’ve turned your backs. Until that day the crown of holiness will no longer rest on the city of Yerushalayim but on the city of Gaza.” To be continued…

RABBI OSHER LEMMEL EHRENREICH RECALLED AS MASTER MECHANECH Days after his passing, Rabbi Ehrenreich, an institution in the world of chinuch habanos, is being recalled as a legend in the world of chinuch by generations of talmidos. Rabbi Osher Lemmel Ehrenreich, menahel of Bais Yaakov of Boro Park for 67 years, was niftar on August 3 at the age of 93. He immigrated to the United States from his native Czechoslovakia in 1934, learning first in Yeshiva Torah Vodaath and in Beis Medrash Elyon before he took his first steps into the world of chinuch as the assistant principal of Yeshiva and Mesivta of Brighton. It was Rabbi Moshe Sherer who convinced Rabbi Ehrenreich to take the helm at Bais Yaakov of Boro Park. At the time, the school had an enrollment of just 100 students and was broadening their program to appeal to families from a variety of backgrounds. Over time, Rabbi Ehrenreich grew Bais Yaakov into a flagship school for high-quality Torah education, boosting its enrollment to 2,000 girls.

Hundreds gathered for Rabbi Ehrenreich’s levayah, lauding him for devoting his life to the school. His son Reb Yossel Ehrenreich told the crowd how he and the school became one. “He once said, ‘Sleep, I sleep at 848 Lennox Road, but I live at Bais Yaakov of Boro Park.” ArtScroll’s Rabbi Nosson Scherman said that he often sought Rabbi Ehrenreich’s counsel on educational matters.

“He was the smartest man in chinuch, and he was always right,” said Rabbi Scherman. “He gave advice in which he understood the person and said what he felt was right for them. He was unafraid to bring in people who were superior to him if that is what would help the Bais Yaakov succeed.”

WITH CUOMO ON THE WAY OUT, CALLS FOR RESTORATION OF TAPPAN ZEE BRIDGE NAME RESOUND It was a move that angered area residents, and now that Governor Andrew Cuomo will be leaving Albany in disgrace, calls have surfaced once again for his father’s name to be erased from the twin bridges that connect Rockland and Westchester counties. Cuomo managed to get the newly built crossing named the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge in 2017, ramming the change through the legislature in the final days of the 2017 session. The side-by-side spans had been officially known as the New NY Bridge while they had been under construction, though locals continued calling them by the name of the single crossing they replaced, the Tappan Zee Bridge. The Journal News reported that Assemblyman Mike Lawler has been advocating for the return of the historic Tappan Zee name since March, a name that honors both the Native American tribe that lived locally and the area’s early Dutch heritage. That movement has picked up speed after Cuomo found himself in the hot seat for numerous improprieties, including charges that he was responsible for thousands of nursing home deaths in the early days of COVID-19. County Executive Ed Day has minced no words over the years about the name change, bristling at the fact that it was made without any input from area residents. Erasing the Cuomo name from the bridge is a logical move in the face of the governor’s disgraced departure from Albany, noted Day. “There has never been a better time to restore the name of the Tappan Zee Bridge than right now,” said Day. A petition launched in 2017 to restore the bridge’s original name has been gathering steam once again and currently boasts over 175,000 signatures.

CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE spends her Shabbos seudos alone in her room, but she doesn’t really mind. She reminisces about her marriage to Nosson.

RECAP: Ariella

On the Bergs’ moshav, Gadi’s pet fox bites both Osher and Shlomo.

Osher

S

hlomo walked out of the shed with his hand over his face. I sat down again and looked at my foot. It was really painful, and drops of blood were dripping to the floor. I had nothing to wipe the mess with, though, and I didn’t want to dirty the towel our hosts had given us. Suddenly there were voices at the door. Shlomo walked in, followed by Reb Elazar and Aryeh. “Osher!’ Reb Elazar cried anxiously. “What happened?” “It’s really nothing,” I said. “It’s just a bite that hurts a lot, but I don’t think it’s anything serious.” Shlomo sat down on the chair next to me, and Reb Elazar examined my foot, and then Shlomo’s face. He exchanged glances with Aryeh. “Was it the fox?” “Yes,” I said. “But it’s pretty small. How much damage could it do? Its teeth aren’t that big.” Reb Elazar and his brother-in-law didn’t seem to hear. They were whispering seriously between themselves. “First thing, wash the area with soap and water,” Aryeh said. Then he muttered something to Reb Elazar that sounded like, “It can reduce the risk.” “Risk of what?” I asked. “I don’t like washing cuts with soap; it stings.” “But you should do it anyway,” Reb Elazar said in that tone people use when they speak to

little children. He looked at Aryeh. “Do you think we should have them treated?” “Foxes are the biggest transmitters,” Aryeh said. “If I would have been home when the fox got in here, I would never have let Gadi touch it. I would have carefully removed it from our property myself. But my wife didn’t think there was reason to be worried about a little cub.” “What do foxes transmit?” I asked impatiently. I don’t like it when people talk over my head. “Have you ever heard of rabies, Osher?” Reb Elazar asked as he guided me to the sink. Shlomo had finished washing his face thoroughly with the liquid soap, and he was blinking rapidly. The soap was probably burning. “I’ll put on some cream instead of soap,” I protested. “First rinse the foot well, Osher,” Reb Elazar said in an authoritative voice, the kind I can’t stand. “And then we’ll see what to do. Aryeh, when is Shabbos over? We’ll make Havdalah and go.

True, the yard looked empty now, but who knew what was hiding out there? If you’re right, we shouldn’t waste any time.” “Of course, there’s only a chance,” his brother-in-law said from the door. “But we can’t take a risk with these things. Shabbos is already over, in any case.” Then he left. “Rabies?” Shlomo spoke up. “People die from that, right?” “Only if it’s not treated in time,” Reb Elazar said. “Baruch Hamavdil bein kodesh l’chol…bein Yisroel l’amim…” “Ouch,” I said. The soap was really stinging. “What could be dangerous about rabies? You’re treating this like it’s a snake bite. It was just a little fox. And why rabies? It’s a fox, not a dog.” “Rabies is a disease that used to be transmitted mostly by dogs,” Reb Elazar said. “But today, all animals that live in the wild are dangerous. You need to get a vaccine that prevents the virus from developing in the blood. If there was a

virus, of course.” “How can we know?” “There are people who can find out. We can’t right now, so that’s why we have to assume that it had rabies. If someone is able to catch the fox carefully later, they will take it for testing, and then we’ll know for sure.” “What do you mean, we have to assume that it had rabies?” Shlomo pressed. Reb Elazar didn’t answer, and suddenly our little room was filled with all of the Bergs, including their father. He came to make Havdalah there, as if we were sick people who were not allowed to leave our quarters. A few minutes later, we left the house and went straight to the hospital. ***** Ariella walked into her room after hearing Havdalah at the Abramovs. She tried to call her parents to wish them a gut voch, but the line was busy. Her mother called her back a few seconds later, and her voice sounded frantic. “Ariella?” “Hi, Mommy! Gut voch.” “Gut voch. Ariella, are there also foxes in the area where you are?!” “Foxes?” Instinctively, Ariella glanced out a nearby window. “Osher called us.” Before Ariella could exult at the news, her mother continued, “And so did Reiness, this rabbi of his. He spoke to Tatty from the hospital. Apparently, Osher was bitten by a fox.” “Bitten by a fox? In Acco? But this is a city. Where exactly is he wandering that he met foxes?” “I don’t know.” Her mother sounded distraught. “Osher didn’t say much. Tatty spoke with one of the doctors in the emergency room; they went to the hospital to get treatment for rabies…” “To get what?” Ariella’s voice rose. “Treatment for rabies.” “It was…” She closed her eyes for a moment. “The fox had rabies?” “It’s not clear, so in such a case, to be on the safe side, they treat the person with the assumption that the animal was infected.” “What’s the treatment?” “Local treatment of the bite wound,

but most importantly, a vaccine against rabies. If, indeed, the fox was infected, the shots neutralize the virus before it can erupt in the body, because if it does erupt, chas v’shalom, there’s nothing to do anymore.” “I don’t understand where he met up with a fox,” Ariella murmured. “Did he say something about where he is?” “Right now he’s in Ziv Hospital in Tzefas, and he got the first shot. He’ll probably be released tomorrow, and he’ll need to come back for follow-up treatment, unless they catch the fox and find out that it’s healthy.” “How did he sound?” “Fine. Normal, I’d say.” “Does he want visitors?” “I didn’t ask, Ariella.” Her mother’s voice became quieter. “I was afraid to hear the ‘no.’ But I asked him to call again tomorrow to tell me how he’s doing, and he said he would.” “What did he say besides that? How did it happen?” “He was sleeping in a room on the ground floor with a friend, and the fox managed to get in through the window and bit them both while they were sleeping. He was bitten on the leg, and his friend on the cheek.” “Ouch.” Ariella shivered and opened the window wide. She looked out to the right and then to the left, and then pulled her head back inside and closed the shutters tight. True, the yard looked empty now, but who knew what was hiding out there? “Which number did they call from?” “It was a blocked number.” Her mother’s voice was laced with pain. “But I’m happy that he called. That’s progress.” “Do you think I should go visit him?” “Wait, I’ll ask Tatty.” She heard talking in the background, and then her father took the phone. “Gut voch, Ariella, how are you?” “Baruch Hashem, great.” “How was Shabbos?” “I enjoyed it very much, baruch Hashem. How was yours?” “We missed you,” he said simply.

“Look, Ariella, we’re really not sure about Osher. Rabbi Steinhaus told me to be very careful and not to do anything to make him feel pressured. So I think we’ll do this: When he calls tomorrow, Mommy will ask him if he wants you to come visit him. Of course, she won’t say anything to make him realize that you’re in the area anyway.” “Okay…” Ariella said thoughtfully. “Do you think he’ll agree?” “If he’s still in the hospital, maybe,” Ariella said doubtfully. “If he’ll already be discharged, I’m afraid there’s no chance.” “But it’s always worth a try,” her father said. If he calls, Ariella thought. She wasn’t banking on that happening. But early the next morning, a little after six, her phone rang. She washed her hands sleepily and picked up. As soon as she saw that it was a blocked number,

Every so often, Sarah glanced at her husband — but she saw that he was completely alert. she felt completely awake. “Osher?” she asked, instead of saying, “Good morning,” or “hello,” or anything else. “How did you know it was me?” He sounded very surprised. “I figured. How are you?” “Baruch Hashem, terrible.” “Terrible? What happened?” “A fox bit me. You heard about it?” “Sure, from Mommy.” “So why are you asking what happened?” “Because I would hope that a few hours after the bite, it shouldn’t hurt you so terribly anymore, but it sounds like it does. You poor thing… I’m so sorry for you… Do you want —” She wanted to offer to come visit, but

her brother cut her off. “It’s really not the bite that’s hurting me and making me feel so terrible. It’s the shot. All of my muscles hurt from it, and I have the chills, and I also threw up once during the night.” He fell silent for a moment, and then added in a low voice, “But maybe that was because of the banana mousse I ate at the Bergs.” “Poor thing,” Ariella said again, and coughed to clear the hoarseness that had suddenly reappeared. “What is this shot? Should I come and visit you? I’ll bring you some chocolate and see how you’re doing.” “You want me to read to you what they gave me here, an information sheet about rabies and why we need these shots? I’m reading it — listen: The rabies virus is transmitted from the bite site to the muscle, and from there it advances through the nervous system to the brain. As long as it does not reach the brain, the person or animal is merely called a carrier; that is the incubation period, during which time the disease does not break out. When the rabies reaches the brain, the virus releases its material into the brain cells and forces them to generate more viruses. This destroys the cells; that’s how brain cells are killed…” “Brrrr….” Ariella shuddered. She’d listened until now with commendable patience. “Osher, I see that I really need to come urgently and bring you something more cheerful to read.” “But I don’t like to read,” he said. “Anyway, the virus couldn’t have gotten to my brain yet, right?” “Of course not. It takes a few days, this… thing.” “Phew.” “So, do you want me to come or not?” “I got up very early this morning, and I was so bored.” “So I’ll come, and then you won’t be so bored.” “There’s a big window here, and the scenery is really nice. It’s too bad that I feel so awful and can’t even enjoy looking at it.” “But I would enjoy looking at some

beautiful scenery.” “I wonder how many floors this hospital has.” “Do you want me to come and count for you?” “Bye, Ariella.” The ping-pong came to an end. “Traveling from Bnei Brak to Tzefas takes about three hours, so I hope that by the time you get here, I’ll already be released and back in my place. At least there, I could enjoy the scenery.” “What scenery?” Ariella asked. “If you don’t want me to come and enjoy the views, at least describe them to me.” “I see a street — not a wide one — and then a low wall, and after that a stretch of sand, and then the sea.” “A low wall? I didn’t realize the ancient wall of Acco is low. I thought from the pictures that it’s really high.” Her brother paused for a long moment. “It’s not the ancient wall that I see from my window,” he said. “It’s a pretty new one — I don’t know how many years old. The ancient wall is further along the coast. But don’t come to Acco, you hear?” “I’m not going on any long trips now — don’t worry.” Ariella looked around her room. “One more question, Osher: What kind of fox bit you? On which floor do you live?” “I don’t like interrogations, Ariella. Goodbye.” “Wait a second Osher, just tell me…” Ariella looked at her phone and put it down on the table. Oh, well. Soon, after davening and a light breakfast, she’d go out to the seaside to find a place that met Osher’s description. He wasn’t there now, so there was no chance he’d see her, anyway. ***** At 3:30 a.m., Elazar and Sarah Reiness left the hospital. Shlomo and Osher were sleeping peacefully, and there was nothing left for them to do there. “I’ll have to come back tomorrow morning,” Rabbi Reiness said to his wife. “To help them with the discharge and all that, and to take them back to Acco.” “You could have left them money for the trip, no?” she asked gently. “There’s a train, and buses, and they are big boys.” “Yes,” he said thoughtfully, “but it’s possible they’ll need me there to speak to the representative of the Health Department, if he comes. And we also need to bring identification documents for both boys for the discharge.” “That’s all true, but I’m really afraid you’ll be very tired, and it’s dangerous to drive like that. Now at least I’m here and can make sure you don’t fall asleep.” He was focused on the road. “You’re right. But I don’t have to go alone tomorrow, either. I’m sure one of the other boys will be happy to join me. The first ones begin in the carpentry shop at six in the morning, you know, and I don’t want them to find everything locked.” They drove the rest of the way in silence. The roads were virtually empty. Every so often, Sarah glanced at her husband — but she saw that he was completely alert. Finally, the car stopped in front of their house. Sarah led the way up to the house with her pocketbook, but her husband stood still near the gate. “Elazar?” She retraced her steps. “Someone was here,” Rabbi Reiness said quietly. To be continued…

Place the sliced mushrooms on a baking sheet and toss them with oil, vinegar and spices. 3. Roast for approximately 45 minutes. The newness, the promise and those stirrings of anxiety that the beginning of a school year brings makes the first day so auspicious a time. And it is an occasion that remains seared in the memories of schoolgirls the world over. As the school bell tolls to herald a brand-new school year, here some students of long ago share their memories.

A Moving Experience By: Hindy Kviat

I

nstead of walking up Lee Avenue and making a right on Roebling Street as I had done for three years, I stopped short on Williamsburg Street W. A lumbering bus stood waiting to swallow me in, along with my fellow “Bais Yaakov of Williamsburgers.” That distinction was no longer, but still, we refused to give up the appellation. Four disquieting months had passed since the thunderbolt rumors we had refused to believe — that Bais Yaakov of Williamsburg was merging with its Boro Park division — were confirmed. Bais Yaakov High School of America was closing the first chapter of its legendary history, and our hearts were hurting. Our senior year, the year we were supposed to peak with power and pride, would be spent as refugees in an overwhelmingly large and “foreign” school. The school at 143 South Eighth Street had gone from being unable to hold the overflow of Yiddishe techter streaming from far and wide, to hosting a small huddle in a vastly empty auditorium — overpowering testimony that it was time for Bais Yaakov to make changes. But still, we ached. Rebbetzin Bender, a”h, soothed us with soft words: “Meidelach, remember. Bais Yaakov, your school, is not closing down. We are just moving into a new home.” Moving into a new home is a challenging transition. But moving in with a different family — the Boro Park branch — takes that challenge to a whole different level. We were grateful to the Bais Yakov hanhalah for the reassurance that our class would remain intact. (Room 211 would be referred to as the “Williamsburg class” by the school, but as “safe haven” to us.) Slowly, buds of excited anticipation pushed themselves up through the cement of apprehension: We would be part of a matzav, a vibrant happening. We would meet new girls and connect with our camp friends. Although we would have to contend with the pressures of traveling, we might enjoy the camaraderie during the time spent on the bus. The school year would be altogether different, but perhaps delightful as well. As I headed up Lee Avenue, joining the world’s morning rush on that first day of school, conflicting thoughts of disbelief, anxiety and excited hope jumbled in my mind: “How could this be happening? I wish things would go back to the wonderful way they were,” and, “This is a very interesting experience! I wonder what wonderful things await us.” I don’t remember many details of that first day. But I surely remember that the year, a challenge tailor-made for myself and my classmates by Hashem, was unique. That first day’s melange of thoughts was an on-target precursor of a melange of both better and harder experiences in store. And looking back, I’m only the richer for it that my Bais Yaakov High School chapter includes the words “of Boro Park.”

Bais Yaakov High School of America was closing the first chapter of its legendary history, and our hearts were hurting.

would love to be able to tell you that I have vivid memories of my first grade briefcase, but the reality is that it probably only stands out in my mind because I actually have a picture of myself holding it on that fateful day in September 1970. When you are the youngest, you pretty much assume that there aren’t going to be a lot of pictures of you in the family album, but that plaid briefcase held a special place in my heart because it was a gift from my grandmother, whose presents typically came as checks or crisp currency. Back then, Pre-1A was a relatively new concept, and kindergarten was a kind of loose arrangement for me, so my milestone school moment came at age five, when I started first grade. I was sitting next to a new friend who had the most incredible treasure I could ever remember — a glossy box of 64 Crayola crayons, something I had never seen before. She proudly showed me the periwinkle crayon and told me

I was sitting next to a new friend who had the most incredible treasure I could ever remember — a glossy box of 64 Crayola crayons, something I had never seen before. her sister’s name was Peri and that she lived in a place called Windsor Park, but since the name sounded like winter to her, she preferred to call it Summer Park. I still think about that from time to time now that I call Spring Valley home. But my most vivid memory of that day? I was sitting on the school bus heading home. I was without my siblings, who had different dismissal times, and I had no idea where I was supposed to get off the bus. My mother probably hadn’t known where my bus stop was either when I’d left that morning, so she told me to just look out for her and get off when I’d see her, a concept that really didn’t sit that well with me. I still remember sitting on the bus in my new blue-andwhite sailor dress, panicking that I wasn’t going to get off at the right place. To this day, I can still see my mother waving to me on the corner when my bus pulled up to the stop. And yes, baruch Hashem, I saw her in time and got off the bus before it pulled away!

Fear of FIrst By: Shayna Gutke Poupko

T

he third in the family is a tough place to be. I have an older brother who is smart, kind and friendly, and everyone loves him. I also have an older sister who never seems daunted by anything; she is brave, responsible and capable. And then there is me — shy, unsure and wanting to be big but not knowing how to get there. Maybe for some kids first grade seemed exciting, but for me it was the epitome of the unknown: new situation, new place, new people. I’d much rather putter around the house than venture out to the New World of Unknown. My parents tried reassuring me that I wouldn’t be alone. After all, my older sister would also be going by bus to the same building. And I would make friends. But just the thought of having to be with a bunch of people I didn’t know was enough to give me a stomachache. The dreaded day dawned, and with leaden legs and a heart thumping uncontrollably I followed my older sister to the bus stop and climbed onto the yellow bus among throngs of chattering girls. My sister scampered toward a friend, and I slid into the seat behind her, sitting silently throughout the ride.

Maybe for some kids first grade seemed exciting, but for me it was the epitome of the unknown: new situation, new place, new people. The bus emptied in front of the school yard. I grabbed my sister’s hand as a lifeline in a sea of strangers. A bell rang. My sister dropped my hand and trotted off, instructing me to stay put in the line for first graders. Fear’s cold claws gripped me, and I burst into tears. I rubbed my eyes, trying to find my sister — but all I saw were faces I didn’t know. Abandoned, I begged Hashem to rescue me. A woman appeared and asked me what my name was. Between sobs I told her. She took my clammy hand into her cool one and smiled. “My name is Mrs. Wexler, and I’m your teacher. I’m so happy you’re in my class.” She held my hand as she led the class into the building. I no longer felt forsaken — I was sailing into a safe harbor, my very own first port of call.

Some Things Are Black-andWhite By: C. Schon

A

s she arranged my new buckle shoes from Bass (bought in the mountains on visiting day), my freshly sewn headband (because who ever heard of ponytails back at the turn of the century?), and an adorable plaid knapsack (handed down from my sophisticated aunt), my mother baked. School was starting, and snacks had to be doled out each morning. By the time the first day dawned, there was marble cake, brownies, rugelach and cupcakes lined up in the large freezer, ready to be packed up. But... the glory of a bakery item. The parchment paper delicately wrapped around gooey icing that no homemade confectioners’ sugar glaze could come close to; the way a sticky yellow layer of (somewhat raw) cookie would stay stuck for finger-licking goodness… those cookies that we almost never had. Because which self-respecting balabusta would dare to be seen at the bakery? Only on the first day of school did our mother welcome us home with those, handpicked during a special trip to the bakery. Those long first days filled with newness, anxiety and more than a trickle of nerves ended in gooey deliciousness. Waiting for us as an afterschool snack was half of a black-andwhite cookie, symmetrically cut so that we each got a piece of both colors. It made the year sweet. It welcomed me after that first day of fifth grade when my teacher sent me to the office with a stern mussar shmuess about responsibility because my heavy knapsack didn’t have a siddur. Oh! The agony of walking down the quiet, stony hallways to request that siddur — and meeting the principal en route. But there was a cookie waiting for me when I got home, along with the assurance that it was okay to forget a siddur. And yes, I have black-and-white cookies waiting for my kids when they come home after their first day. Who am I to tamper with a mesorah like that?

Those long first days filled with newness, anxiety and more than a trickle of nerves ended in gooey deliciousness.

School Memories By: RIFKY Slomiuc

K

indergarten was my inauguration to school some 50-plus years ago, and my earliest visual memory is a photo taken of myself with a “bowl” haircut (picture a bowl placed over the child’s head, with the person giving the haircut neatly trimming any hair poking out around the bowl), and wearing a “monkey” dress — a dress literally covered with pictures of monkeys. No school year began without new shoes (saddle shoes, penny loafers, and the like). My school had a strict uniform code consisting of a neatly pressed lightblue blouse, a pleated jumper with the school’s logo on a patch, and white socks. In perusing my ancient yellowed photos, I note that the patch was neatly sewn either on the left side, the right side, or near the collar’s edge. I doubt iron-on patches were available in that era. In the sitting poses of our yearly class pictures, every child has her hands clasped neatly together. That is the way we were taught to sit from the moment we entered school, and I recall sitting that way in class when we were not using our hands. I remember the year we graduated from pencils to fountain pens, complete with ink cartridges. Every desk was equipped with a corner inkwell, and every child had a blotter. Although I recollect my brown satchel with its clasps, long shoulder strap, and many compartments, I do not remember what I put into it aside from a brown bagged lunch of some sort (there may have been a school lunch program, but my Holocaust survivor parents didn’t participate). I can envision owning a pencil and a tiny silver sharpener, but I don’t think the concept of complicated school supply lists had originated yet. I also don’t recall having any homework assignments (perhaps I neglected to do them?), so I don’t know what I toted back and forth daily. But there’s something I missed out on during my entire schooling career: riding a yellow bus. Waving bye-bye from the window of a bus to a parent is probably a cherished memory for many, but not one that I retain. During my kindergarten education, my mother walked the entire two blocks and one avenue with me. In my early elementary years, I practically lived on the school’s doorstep (across the street and down a lane). Later on, I lived one block and two avenues over. In high school, I was just around the corner (and I lived near the corner!). As a matter of fact, I didn’t merit riding a yellow bus until I moved to Monsey as a newlywed and attended an upstate camp performance! May all beginnings be auspicious ones.

Waving byebye from the window of a bus to a parent is probably a cherished memory for many, but not one that I retain.

To Smile at the Mirror BY: MALKA Katzman

I

awake early with a hollow ache in my head. I’d been up for hours at night until I finally fell asleep, and as light filled the room, I shoot out of bed. It is the first day of school — better defined as the best day in my life. I wash quickly, then survey the neat pile of new everything: uniform, tights, shoes. First I finger the tights, enjoy the crinkle of plastic, and tear open the package. It smells of newness. I dress, fix my hair to perfection, and admire my image in the full-length mirror. I look… new. And happy. And confident that everything in my entire life will be just so wonderful. The house begins to stir now. My mother glances at me from down the hall and smiles broadly. I know it, and everyone does too. Everything will be just great. I open my briefcase again and look through the batch of notebooks. I open my pencil case and sniff the pencils. I close everything with a happy sigh. I take a few dainty steps down the hallway to test my shoes. Their clack is perfect — not too loud, but not silent either. My heart swells with a kind of happiness I don’t think I’ve ever felt before. When everything is new and fresh and promising, how

I take a few dainty steps down the hallway to test my shoes. Their clack is perfect — not too loud, but not silent either. can I not twirl and dance in front of the mirror? Those early “first days” awake a longing in me today — a longing to once again experience the perfect happiness at a new start, that pure and innocent confidence. Why didn’t I wonder about the teachers? Or about getting a good seat? Why didn’t I worry about boring subjects, and homework, and test grades? Perhaps because I was just a child, not an adult who overthinks and over-worries and over-prepares, and knows about all the things that could go wrong. How good to be a child again. To sometimes shed that cloak of grave responsibility and hard realism. To just believe and trust and think about all the good things to come. And to smile and twirl in front of the mirror.

Real Sisters By: Riki Goldstein

M

ost of my childhood, I barely felt that I had a sister. With fifteen years between us, and her living hundreds of miles away in Eretz Yisroel, it took my coming of age to close the gap between us and give us common ground to build on. There was one year, though, that we were real sisters. It was the year I started elementary school. In my blue uniform, squeaky shoes, and spanking new bag, I was all ready for the “big girls’ school.” I had five brothers above me, so no one to trade stickers and keychain collections with, and no one to clue me in on all the minutiae of life in Pre-1A, yet I still had my big sister accompanying me to school. She had her hair blown, pointy shoes, her big navy teacher’s briefcase — and she drove us there in her little blue car. From day one, I had a feeling of belonging as I walked through those towering wooden doors. I wasn’t

Hand in hers, I walked toward the classroom to make my own start. coming alone. I had a protector, a teacher who was my own big sister, albeit little known to me as she had spent the previous year in seminary abroad. Hand in hers, I walked toward the classroom to make my own start. My big sister would head toward second grade and encounter her own challenges and triumphs, while my school journey would begin with Alef-Beis and ABCs. But for that one year, as my mother proudly told countless friends, “My two girls are together at Bais Yaakov.” School had united us.

Should I bring my daughter along to shop for uniforms? Yes, please do, and if she’s a harder-to-fit size, it is especially important to do so. Uniform shopping — unlike standard clothes shopping, where going up a size means a longer skirt, too — is a customized experience. Skirts are available in custom lengths and widths; both are taken into consideration for a custom fit so every schoolgirl can look her very best.

Beat the Crowds Especially if uniform shopping for you is not an in-andout ordeal — whether you have a number of girls or the fitting needs careful consideration — here’s the trick for dressing them with no stress: Come before the crowds. Take your kids out of day camp during the day so that you don’t have to contend with the bottleneck traffic the erev school season brings. Avoid the noise of multitudes of children who just can’t be left behind for this trip. You might just be surprised at how pleasant uniform shopping can be. Additionally, as much as we set ourselves up logistically to meet the demand before every school year, unplanned setbacks or issues can often cause a shortage at the last minute, and that’s another reason not to wait for zero hour.

Wear and Care Heat will undo the pleats instantly, so take care to wash your skirts only on a cold, delicate cycle, and never put them in the dryer. And every few washes, when the pleats can use some sharpening, there generally is no need for complicated procedures like pinning or sewing down the pleats. Put a soft fabric over the skirt (direct ironing will make the fabric shiny), and press

Cotton sweaters should be washed with a delicate detergent like Woolite to prevent fading. Acrylic sweaters will not fade from washing (with the exception of when in contact with bleach).

New for 5782 Bais Tzipora is introducing new uniform sweaters for both their high school and elementary departments. A new uniform combination comes to the scene with the opening of Shoshanos Bais Yaakov: A black pleated skirt, gray v-neck sweater and gray pinstriped shirt. Nitzotz Bais Yaakov in Flatbush is launching with a different color logo for each grade.

Time’s a-Changing Wool skirts were the norm some years ago. At that point, there was only one local uniform manufacturer, and they only produced wool uniforms. When the company closed, there was a welcome shift to the more practical and cost-effective poly/rayon skirts that are in use almost across the board. While students in elementary schools and seminaries, for the most part, choose poly/rayon skirts, you’ll still see some wool skirts in high schools. The logic is that wool holds the pleats for longer, and some high schoolers can use the same skirt for a longer period of time, making the higher cost worth it. During elementary school years, on the other hand, there’s usually significant changes in height, and similarly, seminary lasts just one year.

After a summer full of fun, school’s back on everyone’s minds. New bags have been bought, shoes have been shopped, and we’ve navigated our ways in and out of the somewhat sardine-like uniform stores, emerging with bags full and pockets lighter.

For a segment of the population, however, school never even left their minds... For school secretaries, schools are in session even when schools are out. Four dedicated secretaries from four wonderful schools were willing to speak with me and share what goes on behind the scenes as they hustle and bustle to welcome in students once again.

The Secretaries Meet the secretaries… kind of. Shying away from the limelight, all of the secretaries asked me not to reveal their real names, though the schools they work(ed) for most certainly are real. So bear in mind that Sury is not Sury nor is Chani actually Chani… Let the school bell ring.

Sury from Satmar High School in Monsey

Chani from a Bais Yaakov in Kensington

Tzivia, previously of Bais Rochel Elementary in Monsey

Perel, from an anonymous school in Monsey; previously of a school in Brooklyn

that needed to get done or ordering anything specific we needed for our department, such as if G.O. wanted certain things... One year, for instance, we decided to order mp3 players and speakers for each classroom. We also used the second half to schedule meetings with the principals and teachers to plan for the upcoming year.” — Tzivia An Electronic Memory

“Throughout the year we keep copious notes of what we use: supplies, textbooks, documents. I always write notes to remember what to order for the next year. We have basically everything stored in the computer.” — Sury A Break From School?

“Our back-to-school season begins on the last day of the previous year. We start with ordering and preparing the teacher’s schedules, basically doing all the technical stuff. We’re busy printing contracts, getting contracts signed and settling new staff. There’s so much that goes into preparing for the coming year that we work all through July and August for several hours each day. During the week before school we’re in for many more hours a day, and sometimes even more when things pile up or when there are changes — especially last-minute changes right before school begins.” — Sury

“We don’t have a day camp at our school, so since it’s quieter, we can do our work without phones ringing and girls popping in and out. It’s nice to have the peace of mind to focus, because during the year the office isn’t just a place for paperwork — it’s also the Band-Aid Office and the Fever Office and the I-have-to-call-my-mother-because-I-left-mylooseleaf-at-home Office… So the quiet is nice, but during the COVID-19 lockdown, the school was so quiet that it soon got to be too quiet. We missed the girls! We wouldn’t want to go back to that quiet!” — Chani

When We Begin

So Many Papers!

“In early August we start ordering basic office supplies, craft supplies, all sorts of different paper... We order any furniture, rugs, bins and books that are needed. We’re able to pre-order about 70% of what we’ll need throughout the year, and we purchase the rest as we go.” — Perel

“We have a secretary who is super efficient with running copies; she’s very flexible and multitasks well. The teachers all send in their papers a day or two in advance of printing so everything can be approved. We also have a large commercial machine, so that’s a big help.” — Sury

Back to Bare Bones

Sorry, Girls, This Isn’t the Camp Office!

“When the girls leave for the year, our work continues. We’re busy for another week or two sending out report cards, organizing, sorting through papers, and cleaning closets left in total disarray. All teachers are required to take down their posters at the end of the year, and the school goes back to its bare bones.” — Chani

“The first year or two that we had the school day camp in the building, the girls were used to coming to our office to make copies, but we couldn’t be busy with that all day as we had our own work to do! They had to get used to going to the day camp office to make copies. On the other hand, because the day camp is right here, we got to see the girls in a totally different setting, without uniforms. That brought out a completely different side of everyone!” — Tzivia

Two Halves of a Whole

“In the first part of the summer we worked on class lists, prepared booklets, made copies for the first few days of school, and finished test makeup and report cards. That took up the first half of the summer. The second half was spent preparing for the upcoming year, doing any typing

Dividing Up the Work

“Since there are four secretaries, the work can be easily divided amongst us. The principal gives a booklet to the teachers at the beginning of the year assigning specific jobs

ten and Pre-1A also need a writing table, where they do their imaginative work. It’s especially nice when the furniture is coordinated.” — Perel Moving In

“Day camp will still be in the building until shortly before school begins. We’re also doing some renovations on a part of the building that we haven’t used yet. Once everything will be ready after painting, it’ll take only two or three days for the teachers to set up their classrooms.” — Perel Making Everyone Feel at Home

to each secretary, and the teachers know whom they should go to for everything they need.” — Sury While We’re Working in the Office...

“While we’re busy with office work, the administrator is busy with the building. The walls get freshly painted, the electrical system is checked, everything is washed down, and the building is stocked up with supplies for the coming year. This year we just got new whiteboards for each class, and they’re being put up now.” — Chani The Importance of Play

“PlayMags, mentchies, and Hexabits are the most popular toys throughout the year, but the toys get switched out as the level of play grows with the children. It’s important that the kids have age-appropriate toys.” — Perel

“At the beginning of the year, every student wears a name tag. Because we call everyone by name, it makes them feel that they belong. As for the teachers, the principal goes out of her to way to make everyone feel welcome.” — Sury Planning the Projects

“We use a combination of pre-printed, ready-made and handmade artwork. It’s a real team effort between the principal and teachers to prepare everything they need for their curriculum; the creativity just flows. When you’re a gardener, you see landscapes all around you, and when you’re working in a preschool, you see ideas that will benefit the kids everywhere. So you pull an idea from here and an idea from there... One of our teachers decided not to take a summer job because she wanted to spend the time preparing extra-special projects for the kids. Most teachers dedicate about two weeks to their preparation.” — Perel All the Extras

Who Gets What?

“The principal decides which room goes to which class, and the janitors help schlep the desks to each room. We then set them up and distribute the books. With more than 350 girls, preparing the books is a huge job! Each girl gets between ten and twelve books!” — Tzivia Making a Comfy and Cozy Environment

“When it comes to setting up a classroom, the environment should be pleasant for the teacher. The teachers get to set up their classes as they like it, because if the teacher is happy and comfortable, then she’s able to deliver. In preschool, one thing that works well is separate areas, like a cozy play area, a library area, a place for circle time... Kindergar-

“Our Limudei Kodesh principal is in charge of the remedial program. She’s amazing. She’s always very busy on the phone because there are so many programs to coordinate. There’s Title 1, P3, SEITs, working with shadows... We have a self-contained program in the school, and there are a lot of people coming in. Everything has to fit, and lots of work goes into setting it all up. The principal also reviews curriculum, contests and plans. There’s an unbelievable amount of extras that she puts in; this is a very up-to-date 2021 school.” — Chani The Puzzle of Pedagogs

“Planning the daily schedules takes lots of negotiations and compromises… There’s a lot of puzzle pieces. — Sury

In Case of Emergency

‫שתצילנו‬

“High school teachers rarely take off. These are people who want to teach and are dedicated to being there. We do have a list of substitutes in case of an emergency, though. When that happens, it’s a challenge. But teachers generally don’t take off.” — Sury

You Make the First Move!

“When it comes to the calendar, some things are set in stone; obviously Chanukah has a set amount of vacation days. However, there’s a very interesting network between schools similar to ours, especially about the time from Shavuos to Pesach, where everyone is trying to figure out the first day of transportation and which days off they’re all having. ‘Sukkos ends on Wednesday; will you be open on Friday?’ These are the kind of questions we ask each other. It can go around and around in circles, and we laugh. Ultimately, the principal makes the final decisions.” — Chani

Bringing Back the Books

“Most of our books are discontinued editions, and we continue to use those. The ones that we do order, we order about six months in advance. The girls are responsible to return their books at the end of the year. If they don’t, they have to pay for the book — but most books don’t get lost.” — Sury

When Will It Ring?

“The bell system runs on the computer. We have a Sunday bell, a Monday bell… On Rosh Chodesh the bells are also different to allow for longer davening, and so on. The system runs automatically.” — Sury What I Miss Most About Summer Sessions

“I enjoyed doing the class lists, seeing which girls were coming in, which sisters we were getting. I also enjoyed the computer work: merging the class list, making attendance sheets, roll books and breakfast attendance sheets.” — Tzivia

The Best Feeling

“The best feeling happens when the bell rings and no students are late and there are no late teachers or substitutes. It’s so nice when things move smoothly. I also like the newness of a new year. Everybody is still excited; everyone is still at their best behavior. There’s a freshness. That’s my favorite part.” — Sury

Open All Year Round!

It’s that time of year again! At the end of every summer comes back-to-school season, and one of the most fun parts of this time of year is shopping for school supplies. There are two categories of shoppers of school supplies: Type 1 are the Fancy Supplies People. You know, those are the kids who arrive the first day with glossy binders, every type of pen and pencil on the market, and the latest colored notebooks. Type 2 are the Simple Supplies People. We buy packages of twenty, divide everything among the members of the whole family, and we’re all happy with our brand-new school stuff! And now, welcome Type 3 to the school supplies scene! We’re basically Type 2 at first. We buy simple, neat and new supplies. And then — we have a blast personalizing and labeling them to look even nicer and oh-so-sharp! Follow along as I teach you these two cool labeling techniques. Use them to personalize and label your brand-new school supplies, and your binders and notebooks will be sure to stand out!

DIY VINYL STICKERS SUPPLIES: Name and initial printouts Scissors Scotch tape Vinyl sticker sheets Razor blade Clear contact paper

NOTE: Vinyl sticker sheets can be purchased in larger craft stores. They come in packages of many colors, and in some stores they are sold on rolls (so you get to choose the colors and the size you need). For your name and initial printouts, use a bolder font so it’ll be easier to cut out. I used the font Impact. The initial letter should be larger than the rest of the name. The font sizes I used were 200 for the name and 350 for the initial. Alternatively, you can use an alphabet stencil to trace your name.

IMPORTANT: When using the razor blade to cut, be sure to do so on top of a thick surface that can get ruined, such as a piece of cardboard or an old notepad.

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Cut out the initial letter and tape it onto the vinyl sheet you are using. 2. Use the razor blade to cut out any inner parts of the letter. 3. Use the scissors to cut out the letter. 4. Remove the backing of the vinyl sticker, and stick the letter in the center of the binder (or on whatever item you are personalizing). 5. Cut out your name and tape it to a vinyl sheet. 6. Use the razor blade to cut out the letters of the name. • First cut all vertical lines. • Then turn the papers sideways to cut all horizontal lines (which are now vertical to you!). • When cutting with the razor, press hard enough so that you are cutting through the vinyl, but don’t apply too much unnecessary pressure. • At each corner, cut past the line a tiny bit to make sure all corners are completely cut. • Leave the rounded edges for last, as they are the hardest. 7. Remove the printout paper from the vinyl, and check that all the lines were cut. 8. Cut a piece of contact paper that is large enough to cover the name. 9. Place the contact paper lightly over the vinyl sheet. 10. Press the contact paper down onto the letters.

11. You should be able to see the letters clearly. If anything isn’t cut out properly, carefully lift the contact paper in that area and fix it with the razor blade. 12. Slowly and carefully remove the contact paper from the vinyl sheet. All the letters should come along with the contact paper. 13. If any unwanted vinyl is on the contact paper, remove it carefully. (You may need to use the tip of a pencil or a pair of scissors to help you.) 14. Remove the backing from the vinyl letters. 15. Place the contact paper over the initial, keeping it straight and centered. Focus on the letters of the name (not on the sheet of contact paper). 16. Press down on the letters only! 17. Remove the contact paper. (You may need to “help” by peeling the edges of the letters off the contact paper as you go along). 18. Remove any extra vinyl bits by cutting lightly with the razor blade. 19. Ta-dah! Your beautifully personalized binder is ready for the first day of school!

DIY LABELS SUPPLIES: Printouts of whatever you’d like on the labels Scissors Parchment or wax paper Clear packing tape Coin Bowl of water

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Type up and print out the words you will be using for these labels. 2. Cut out the word for the label. 3. Place the paper on parchment paper. (This is so the tape doesn’t stick to your work surface.) 4. Cut a piece of tape that’s slightly longer than the length of the word. 5. Carefully place the tape over the word. 6. Use a coin to rub the tape onto the letters. 7. Place the tape into the bowl of water. Let the paper absorb the water. The tape will roll up. 8. Once the paper looks really wet (after about 2 to 3 minutes) remove the tape from the water. Hold the tape directly above the bowl and start rubbing the wet paper off the tape. You may need to dip it back into the water to help remove some bits of paper. Take care that the black letters remain on the tape. 9. Once all the paper is removed, place the tape — sticky side up — on the parchment paper to dry. 10. Once the tape dries, it should regain its stickiness. 11. If you notice that some paper is still on the tape, you can re-dip the tape and remove whatever paper remained. Let it dry again. 12. Stick your cool and sharp label on whatever you’re labeling!

These are so easy and fun to make, and they’re super sharp! Try them on your notebooks and spirals, and anything else around the house that needs labeling! Toy boxes? Storage bins? This idea will work anywhere!

NOTE: Again, I recommend using a bold font for these labels as some of the ink can get rubbed out. Also, make sure the font size won’t be too large as it needs to fit inside the height of a piece of tape. (I used the Oswald font in bold, size 125.)

Happy organizing and labeling, and much hatzlacha on your new school year! August 18, 2021

WHY ARE PENCILS YELLOW?

During the 1800s, the world’s best graphite was produced in China. Since yellow is a color associated with royalty and respect in China, American pencil makers painted their pencils yellow to let people know that their pencils contain Chinese graphite. The yellow paint color stuck, and the typical pencil is painted yellow still today.

NASA and the Million-Dollar Pencil Pencil’s Mark on History The ancient Roman writing instrument, the stylus, was a thin metal rod that scribes used to leave a light yet legible mark on papyrus, the paper used at the time. Other early styluses were made of lead, which is not the pencil core of today — that’s actually graphite (a dark-colored mineral), even though we call it “lead.” After the 1564 discovery of a large graphite deposit in Borrowdale, England, graphite became widely used as a writing tool, since it made a darker mark than lead. This mineral is soft and brittle, though, and couldn’t be used without a holder. At first the graphite sticks were wrapped in string, and later on they were inserted into wooden sticks with a hollowed-out cavity — and the wood-cased pencil was born. The first mass-produced pencils were manufactured in Germany in 1662, and the industry developed further throughout the Industrial Revolution in the nineteenth century. At first the United States relied on imported pencils — until the war with England cut off imports. The first American wood pencils are accredited to William Monroe, a Massachusetts cabinetmaker, who introduced them in 1812. Other pencil manufacturers joined the act, and by the end of the nineteenth century, New York and New Jersey were home to a couple of pencil factories.

The legend that during the height of the space race NASA scientists spent years and millions of taxpayer money developing a pen that could actually write in space, while Soviet cosmonauts simply used a pencil, is just that: a myth. In reality, NASA did use pencils earlier on; however, they scrambled to find a cheaper solution when the price of these pencils, a whopping $128.89 each, became public in 1965 and many saw it as a frivolous expense. Pencils, in general, had some other drawbacks, such as tips flaking and breaking, causing potential harm to astronauts and their equipment after drifting off in space. Pencils are flammable, too — not a great option onboard after the Apollo 1 fire. It was the Fisher Pen Company that independently invested $1 million to produce what is now known as the space pen. The space pen could write upside down, in extreme temperatures, and even underwater. If it became too hot, though, the ink turned green instead of blue. After NASA tested them and approved them for space use, they bought 400 space pens, at $6 apiece.

Thomas Edison’s Pencils Though the original source of this quote is hard to verify, Thomas Edison allegedly said: “I like my pencil best. A fountain pen has always been a mystery to me.” Edison had his pencils custom-made by the Eagle Pencil company, one of the Big Four American pencil manufacturers at the time. His pencils were 3 inches long (3.5 or 4 inches according to another source), which is shorter than the standard pencil, so they fit in his vest pocket. Also, the graphite was softer than in the typical pencil. According to one source, Edison ordered his pencils in batches of a thousand pieces and once wrote a letter of complaint to the Eagle Company since the last batch was too short, causing the pencils to “twist and stick in the pocket lining.” Always seen with a stub of pencil and paper sticking out of a rumpled suit jacket, the inventor filled page after page with pencil writing and sketches, and his estate comprises at least 4 million pages of writing, notes and sketches. The light bulb patent application, including Edison’s signature, 1880

Pencil Stain Removal Dealing with a graphite stain? First, try the eraser! Gently, so as not to ruin the surface or material that got stained, rub a soft eraser over the mark. If this doesn’t do it, try a few drops of laundry detergent and wipe away the stain with a soft cloth. If possible, wash the material or surface right after applying detergent. Otherwise wipe away the soap with a damp cloth. If your stain is stubborn, you can try putting vegetable oil on the stain, then wipe away the oil — and hopefully the stain, too — with a damp cloth. This method should not be used on fabric! For marks on a porous surface, like the ceramic of a bathtub or porcelain tile, put some white toothpaste on the stain and let it sit for a few minutes. Rub the dry toothpaste with a stiff-bristled toothbrush, and then wipe it away. Hopefully, the stain will disappear with the paste!

LET RABBI PAYSACH KROHN INSPIRE YOU DURING THE MOST IMPORTANT DAYS OF THE YEAR!

YAMIM NOR AIM WITH THE MAGGID ELEVATING STORIES AND INSIGHTS FROM ELUL THROUGH YOM KIPPUR

I

n Yamim Noraim with the Maggid, Rabbi Paysach Krohn, the famed “American Maggid,” shares brief but powerful ideas culled from a large variety of Torah sources. And, of course, he brings those ideas to life through stories and parables told in his inimitable style. s mashgiach ruchani of Bais Medrash Govoha, Rav Nosson Wachtfogel stood beside Rav Aharon Kotler, zt”l, helping to build Torah Jewry in America. And, of course, to build young men, thousands and thousands of them, into Bnei Torah. Rav Nosson Wachtfogel on Elul and Yamim Noraim is adapted from the Hebrew sefer Leket Reshimos — literally, Collected Notes — containing short and brilliant nuggets of inspiration assembled by Rav Nosson’s students. It also includes his students’ memories of the Mashgiach and his inspirational life and service of Hashem, as well as stories Rav Nosson told them about his own illustrious rebbeim. Most of the “notes” are brief, making them easy to read and share, yet they contain an infinite amount of wisdom and perception to enrich this awe-filled time of year.
