(Re: In Plaids, Pinstripes and Pleats, Issue 98) Thank you for the fantastic graphic feature detailing the uniforms from each local school! My girls loved it, and it created such fun discussions in the neighborhood. We appreciate the work that obviously went into this piece and the rest of your creative seasonal content. Keep at it! (Re: Summer Halacha Files, Issue 94) Reading about the halachos pertinent for bein hazmanim time made me think of another issue summer travel may present of which sojourners should be aware. Our vacation landed us at a wonderful non-Jewish hotel, hours from home, but with the advantage of hosting the only daily minyanim for miles around. Along with that perk came early-morning separate indoor swim hours for men and women. Upon walking around the perimeter of the hotel one afternoon, I noted that the uncovered windows of the indoor pool were clearly visible to the outside eye. Furthermore, in the time that my husband used the pool for a swim, although entry through the main door was locked unless access was given by the front desk, an employee accessed the area via a service door. I’m not in the slightest suggesting that these are halachic transgressions, but sometimes an offer that’s “too good to be true” is just that. R.S.

(Re: Exploring the Catskills, Issue 89) I’d like to take this opportunity to commend your publication for its excellence and for always containing information that’s so helpful to the community. This summer I spent ten days in the Catskills and used information featured in your magazine to plan a couple of day trips with my husband. We especially enjoyed the Rail Explorer and the gondola ride at Belleayre Mountains. Thank you so much, and keep these ideas coming! Z. Klein

YOUR VOICE KNOW WHOM TO ASK

It is important for people with food allergies to be aware that they cannot rely on those manning the counter at takeout stores and restaurants when inquiring about ingredients used in a product. Yesterday my granddaughter bought a muffin from a local takeout store. She made it clear to the employee serving her that she is highly allergic to nuts, and he assured her that what she was buying was fine and didn’t contain any problematic ingredients. She took the muffin with her, and after one bite had a severe allergic reaction. B’chasdei Hashem, she was treated fairly quickly and survived the incident. I am publicizing this incident in order to prevent others suffering from allergies from having this kind of experience. S.F.

KOSHER WRAPPERS

I’d like to use this platform to voice a concern. Before purchasing any processed food item, we carefully check for the stamp of a reliable baal machshir and make sure the food is 100% kosher. How disappointing it is, come Shabbos, when most wrappers on these kosher foods (sandwich ice cream, cones, taffy pops, individual candies, lettuce) cannot be opened without tearing words. I’m wondering if the same baalei machsheirim who work tirelessly and put in so much effort to ensure that our food is kosher can start requesting that the wrapper in which the food is sealed should also be kosher! I’m hoping that if more of us consumers will pressure the companies to do so, we will be able to maintain our kedushas Shabbos. A Reader

The philanthropist was so blown away by the nobility of the Yid that he wanted a part in bringing more Yidden to recognize it, too. Before long, there was a magnificent campus, ready to entertain, educate and strengthen every Jew in town. Interestingly, a few short weeks after this incident, the businessman passed away. Perhaps with this act, he completed his mission in this world… And this leaves us to ponder… To whom does the zechus of the Torah center belong? Surely it can be attributed to the Texan philanthropist. But perhaps the credit goes to some anonymous, unknowing Yid who davened with deveikus at the Kosel on that auspicious day…

With his middos tovos, refined speech and dignified comportment, a Yid can make a huge impression on those around him, intentionally or unintentionally. Who knows how far his influence will reach? Even someone who is far from appreciating the Torah and mitzvos can be inspired and realize that there is something greater, something higher, powering the frum Yid’s actions. Bein Ish Always Knows As told to Chany Paskes by Deenie Jurkansky

How Frumy steps in when there’s only darkness

I

didn’t want to tell anyone, let alone share my pain. I was confused, broken and alone. My nineteen-year old son, my pride and joy, was diagnosed with cancer. All I wanted was to go into a hole and never come out. When a woman with the kindest eyes I ever saw came over to me in the hospital and asked if I needed a ride home, the only words I could get out was: “I don’t need anything. I have a car.” But the woman wasn’t fazed. She insisted on driving me to the parking lot, took my suitcases and handed me her card. “Call me,” she said. “For whatever you need.” I never called. But Frumy Horowitz of Bein Ish wouldn’t take no for an answer. She called me. And when she did, it wasn’t just to chat. “Please give me your girls’ sizes. They’re getting new robes for yom tov.” “Text me your address, I’m sending you supper.” “Your son loves music; we’re sending a band to his room tonight.” Every time Bein Ish would appear on my caller ID, It brought a smile to my face. Even before I knew the reason for the call, I knew it would be something to brighten our day. Shaul’s prognosis was bad, and Bein Ish was determined to cheer him up. They organized a full-blown birthday party in honor of his special day, and knowing Shaul’s affinity for music, they arranged for Chazan Helfgott to come and perform. Bein Ish even got all of Shaul’s friends from yeshivah to join. It was like a mini wedding, complete with dancing until the wee hours of the morning. And that’s my story. Just the tip of the iceberg of how Bein Ish was my rock during our medical drama. Frumy was just there. Care packages. Toys. Events. A listening ear. A shoulder to lean on. Just thinking of the little and big things Bein Ish did overwhelms me with gratitude. They paid for rides to and from the hospital. They provided a fully furnished apartment so we had a place to stay nights. They funded mini getaways for the times when my sanity was hanging in the balance. And the Shabbaton — Bein Ish pulled out all the stops so that the families with stricken children could experience a luxurious, all-expenses-paid weekend. For months af-

ter the Shabbaton, I’d think of that Shabbos during my most difficult hours, and the memory kept me going. And it wasn’t only Shaul. When my friend’s son Meir was ill and needed to be isolated to avoid any germs, Bein Ish saved the day. It was Adar at the time, and not only was Meir bloated from the meds, but he was stuck inside the house on the happiest day of the year! But his family should have known that Bein Ish would take care of him. Soon two packages arrived. One was filled with little prizes for Meir to distribute, and the other was filled with crisp two dollar bills. Meir was elated. Now he could take part in the Purim joy! Bein Ish had known just what would do the trick. When Meir was confined to bed for weeks, Bein Ish came up with another brilliant plan to keep him busy and his mood upbeat: He would be in charge of raising money for a woman going through a costly transplant as a zechus for his own refuah! From his bedside, he sent out letters to his friends and acquaintances describing the plight of the woman. Every day, his family would bring him the envelopes with the donations that were mailed in, and he would open them, add up the amounts, and with tremendous joy, ask his parents to guess how much came in that day. Not only did this project keep him going, he raised $22,000 for a woman in need! Bein Ish knows what’s needed and when. And there are hundreds more who, like me, were the beneficiaries of Bein Ish’s tremendous support and caring when just waking up every morning takes superhuman effort. Like the time little Yanky was stuck in the hospital over Shabbos for an unexpected surgery. He cried. He threw a tantrum. He yelled. There was no way he was welcoming Shabbos in his weekday polo! And then the elevator door opened. There stood a Bein Ish driver with a Shabbos package. The first thing Yanky pulled out was a crisp, new white shirt. How did they know? And then there was the time when one of the non-Jewish patients made a baked ziti party. Little Rivky wanted to join, but the ziti wasn’t kosher. As much as her mother tried bribing her with candy and chocolate, Rivky wouldn’t hear of it. She wanted the “pizza lokshen” that they were serving. Then Frumy showed up with a package of food, and the first thing Rivky’s mother said was: “I hope there’s baked ziti in there.” And there was. Of course there was. And then there was the time when Goldy needed more oxygen and was embarrassed that her friends in the bungalow colony should see the tanks. Immediately, Bein Ish arranged for the Hatzolah members to wrap the oxygen in their talleisim so that the Goldy’s pride should be protected. There really is no end to what Bein Ish does. They just know what is needed, and when. Without pomp or fanfare, Bein Ish makes sure to do whatever is humanly possible to create an oasis of joy during a time that is anything but. Thank you, Bein Ish!

CHAPTER 22 RECAP: After Shabbesai Tzvi lures many Yerushalayim people to join his rings around Yerushalayim, the rabbis, left with no choice, announce a cherem for him and his followers. Livid, Nattan Haazati denounces Yerushalayim as “Moshiach’s” place of reign, designating Gaza as the crown city instead.

T

he royal entourage of Moshiach did not linger in Gaza. Shabbesai Tzvi and Nattan Haazati abolished the fast day of the Seventeenth of Tammuz and proclaimed it the Day of the Revival of the Spirit and Light of Moshiach, a day of rejoicing and festivity. Then, with great pomp and majesty, the royal entourage moved northward, ever closer to the sultan’s throne. Deliriously cheering crowds poured out of the gates of Damascus to welcome the glorious king. Musicians played at the roadside, and people danced in the road. Again the royal entourage did not linger. The great Jewish community of Aleppo lay ahead. The new scribe of Moshiach, Shmuel Primo of Yerushalayim, composed numerous brilliantly written pamphlets and proclamations trumpeting the prophecies of Nattan Haazati, and messengers went forth to carry these writings to Jewish communities near and far. Nattan Haazati had remained behind in Eretz Yisroel and was planning to travel to the interior of Africa in search of the Ten Lost Tribes,

but in every city and town through which the royal procession passed, his prophecies were read to the people. “Hear the words of Nattan Binyamin, the son of Elisha Chaim Halevi of Gaza, as revealed to him from Heaven in a prophetic vision. Let the earth give out a song of praise and the heavens resound with music. Let the sun and the moon shine both day and night, and the hills and meadows echo with the sounds of rejoicing. A man from the House of Dovid has come forth from the valleys of the north and sailed across the sea. Stronger than the mighty lion, fiercer than the leopard, soaring higher than the eagle, swifter than the fleetest deer. He shall be called Shabbesai the son of Mordechai Tzvi among the people of Yisroel, and he shall rebuild the walls of Yerushalayim. “Behold, the day of Redemption draws near. Two years more, and the rulers of the world will lay their crowns at the feet of Shabbesai Tzvi, and he, himself, will place the Crown of Dovid upon his own head. Then the children of Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov will live in

peace and honor. The poor man will stand erect, and the nobleman will bow his head. And the king will live in Yerushalayim, among the people who will come from afar. “Five years more, and the call of the great shofar shall bring terror to the hearts of the evil and joy to the hearts of the righteous. And those banished to the Land of Amalek and the forgotten in the Land of Darkness shall return to the land of their fathers. And they shall go up on the holy mountain and bring sacrifices to His holy Name. “Turn away from the spoils of thievery. Extend your hand to the poor. Proclaim a fast day and repent your sins. Prepare your souls, for the end of days approaches.” Day by day, new followers joined the royal entourage moving north through the sandy hills of Syria. When Shabbesai Tzvi arrived in Aleppo on the day before Tisha B’Av in 1665, the Jewish populace was already aflame with Messianic fervor. Many rabbis were also swept up in the fervor and were among the first to greet the new Moshiach. During the three weeks of his stay in Aleppo, Shabbesai Tzvi refused to appear in public as Moshiach, but he revealed his mission in private to some of the most prominent and learned people of Aleppo. Many became his enthusiastic supporters. In the beginning of the month of Elul, Shabbesai Tzvi and his entire royal

entourage boarded ships in Aleppo and set sail for Smyrna. The stunning events in Eretz Yisroel and Syria, along with a plethora of wild legends about Shabbesai Tzvi, were described breathlessly in a deluge of letters from the East. Reports reached Amsterdam that the Ten Lost Tribes, led by a saintly man who performed many miracles, had appeared in Arabia and had overrun the major Islamic city of Mecca. They were now marching north to support Shabbesai Tzvi. Other reports told of how Shabbesai Tzvi had accurately predicted a hailstorm and a day of darkness, and how he had walked through a raging fire and emerged unharmed. These legends spread across Europe and North Africa and inflamed the minds of the people. Primo’s crafty proclamations and copies of Nattan’s prophecies reached Europe soon afterward and were greeted with wild rejoicing. From London to Prague, from Italy to Poland, the news of the arrival of Moshiach rekindled the flame of hope in the hearts of the downtrodden Jewish nation. In Amsterdam, the Portuguese Marranos were ecstatic. The Torah scrolls were taken from the holy ark in the Portuguese Sinagoga, and there was dancing to the accompaniment of musical instruments. In Frankfurt and Hamburg, the news was greeted with enormous emotion. People put on their finest clothes and gathered in shuls to hear the readings of the proclamations. Those who doubted the authenticity of the new Moshiach dared not voice their doubts. By summer’s end, all eyes were turned eagerly to the east, waiting for a word or a sign that the long and bitter exile was finally at an end. Summer’s end also brought a worried Yankiv Tomashov to Rav Shloime Strasbourg’s doorstep in Pulichev. Nestled in a remote river valley in the southern provinces of the Kingdom of Poland, Pulichev was nonetheless inundated by reports and rumors about the arrival of Moshiach. In the shuls and in the marketplace, almost nothing else was discussed but the legendary exploits of Shabbesai Tzvi and the fiery prophecies of Nattan Haazati. “Rav Shloime, you must forgive me for bringing my problems to you,” said Yankiv Tomashov as they walked in the golden afternoon. “But I have nowhere else to turn. Just two weeks ago, I received a letter from Yechiel in Smyrna. He’s beside himself with joy. Shabbesai Tzvi has proclaimed himself Moshiach in Gaza. He’s been acclaimed by most of the Jews in Eretz Yisroel and Syria. He’s currently on his way back to Smyrna.” “Isn’t he in cherem in Smyrna?” “Not any more. The cherem lapsed five years ago. After Smyrna, he claims he’s going to Constantinople to take the sultan’s crown and place it onto his own head. Rav Shloime, I’m frightened for the safety of my son.” “What do you mean?” “You and I can afford to sit back and watch Shabbesai Tzvi from afar. Is he or is he not Moshiach? Do we believe the positive things we hear about him? Do we believe the negative things? We can afford to let time and events answer these questions for us. But Yechiel is down there right by his side. How long do you think the sultan will wait before he takes action? If Shabbesai Tzvi is not Moshiach, he is surely in great danger, as is everyone connected with him. I fear for

Yechiel’s life, Rav Shloime.” “If the sultan has not done anything until now,” said Rav Shloime, trying to reassure him, “he’s unlikely to do anything soon. He has probably decided to let this whole affair run its course.” “Still, new developments may cause the sultan to have a change of heart. I must go down there to be at my son’s side. Rav Shloime, when you returned from Turkey three years ago, you wrote me a letter describing your meetings with Shabbesai Tzvi and your impressions. I would like you to repeat it all to me now in as much detail as you remember. Everything he did. Every word he said. It’s important that I come there as fully prepared as I can be. I’m asking for several hours of your valuable time. I’ll write down everything you say, and I’ll study it carefully afterward.” “I shall be glad to tell you everything I remember.” “Thank you, Rav Shloime.” “Will you be going on your own?” “No, Noyach, one of my assistants, will join me. He is a very resourceful young man.” “When will you be going?” “After Sukkos,” said Yankiv Tomashov. “First I’ll return to Warsaw and put my affairs in order. Have you been affected here in Pulichev?” “Of course, we’ve all been affected. When a copy of a letter from Nattan Haazati or Shmuel Primo comes to Pulichev, all work stops. People put on their best Shabbos finery and come to the shul to hear it read. What can I do about it? How can I object to the reading of letters telling everyone to repent? I have no choice but to keep my doubts and misgivings to myself.” “I understand. I’ve heard that this sort of thing is happening all over Europe. People have simply stopped conducting business. I’ve heard that people are selling their homes and possessions at considerable losses, because they want gold coins to carry with them when the call comes.” “Yes, I’ve heard this, too.” “These are difficult times for all of Europe, not only for the Jewish people. The economies are in shambles. Banks are failing. Money is scarce. There is political unrest everywhere. The old order is rotting at the foundations. Old empires are crumbling, and hungry new powers crouch in the wings, ready to pounce on the carcasses. The divine right of kings is questioned. Peasants grumble, their minds filled with outrageous new thoughts they would never have dared think before. Thousands of discontented people cram into ships sailing for the Americas. The Christian world, as we know it, is collapsing.” “Quite true,” said Rav Shloime. “There’s also something else. Some Christian scholars have predicted there will be a revolution within Jewry in the year 1666. The emergence of Shabbesai Tzvi fits this description perfectly.” “I tell you, Rav Shloime, if Shabbesai Tzvi is not Moshiach, he has certainly planned his campaign carefully.” “Indeed, he has,” said Rav Shloime thoughtfully, “but if he is not Moshiach, where will all this lead? How will it all end?” To be continued…

End of an Era as Hochul Replaces Cuomo as Governor Making her mark as the first woman to hold the highest elected office in New York, Kathy Hochul transitioned from lieutenant governor to governor, replacing a disgraced Andrew Cuomo who finally stepped down amid an ongoing impeachment inquiry. Hochul was sworn in just moments after Cuomo left office at 11:59 p.m. on Monday night in a private swearing-in ceremony held at the State Capitol Building in Albany. A ceremonial swearing-in event took place on Tuesday morning in the Capitol Building. Gothamist reported that Hochul spent considerable amounts of time last week meeting with key New York City officials including Mayor Bill de Blasio and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, as well as state congressional leaders. Despite Cuomo’s insistence that he remain the point person as then-Hurricane Henri neared over Shabbos, Hochul worked closely with elected officials on storm preparations and response. Henri was ultimately downgraded to a tropical depression before making landfall in Rhode Island, sparing New York the vast majority of its wrath and depriving Cuomo of one last opportunity to capture the media spotlight during his final hours in office. Hochul will serve out the remaining sixteen months of Cuomo’s third term in office and has already announced her plans to run for governor in the 2022 elections.

As COVID-19 Variants Continue Emerging, CDC Authorizes Booster Shots With COVID-19 numbers rising everywhere, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention authorized booster shots for all Americans who received the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. The Associated Press reported that the shots are scheduled to begin the week of September 20 and will be given eight months after the vaccines’ second dose. Health officials are still awaiting more data to help them decide if booster shots will be

required for those who received the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine. President Joe Biden described the booster shots as “the best way to protect ourselves from new variants that could arise.” According to NPR, Israel’s rising COVID-19 rates made it clear that the vaccine’s immunity wanes over time, with the Delta variant responsible for rising infection rates. Reviewing the Israeli data prompted officials in this country to call for booster shots, and the United Kingdom and Turkey have also announced plans for a third dose of the vaccine. U.S. COVID-19 expert Dr. Anthony Fauci emphasized the importance of staying ahead of the curve in an effort to prevent another surge in infection rates, a move that was applauded by infectious disease specialist Dr. Mark Mulligan of NYU Langone Health Center. “Part of leadership is being able to see around the corner and make hard decisions without having all the data,” observed Dr. Mulligan. “It seems to me that’s what they’re doing here.”

Widespread Infestation Prompts Pre-Rosh Hashanah Warnings Certain traditional Rosh Hashanah foods may be conspicuously absent from many a table this year, after an alert issued by rabbanim warned of significant worm and bug infestations

in items that have been eaten as simanim for generations. The Central Rabbinical Congress, the Hisachdus Harabbanim’s kashrus division founded in 1953 by prominent rabbanim, including the Satmar Rebbe Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum, released a bulletin last week urging extra vigilance on multiple items that are typically consumed on Rosh Hashanah. Among them were carp, which is said to have a high probability of insect infestation; figs, which should be completely avoided; and dates from Indonesia and Pakistan, which are also problematic. Other items mentioned by the CRC included salmon, baby salmon, and all leafy greens, which should be washed and checked carefully. CRC rabbinical coordinator Rabbi Hershel Hartstein acknowledged that the advisory may have people breaking long-standing family minhagim, a necessary reality given the circumstances. “We cannot blame people for avoiding produce items like spinach and leek that have a high incidence of insect infestations,” said Rabbi Hartstein. “While foods like black-eyed peas should be cooked to address the worm problem, others are so prone to worms that they should be avoided.” The CRC will be issuing additional updates before Sukkos but has already warned that COVID-19 restrictions have created challenges that may affect esrogim, with mashgichim sent to monitor their growth in Italy and Morocco.

Financial Incentives Prompt 80K To Get Vaccinated A large number of New York City residents who until now had been reluctant to roll up their sleeves and get vaccinated against COVID-19 have relented, with more than 80,000 taking their shots and receiving a $100 incentive for their efforts. Speaking at a press conference last week, Mayor Bill de Blasio said that vaccination rates in the city have been climbing, with 75% of adults in the five boroughs receiving at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. The city has been offering to vaccinate people in their own homes, and the effort has been so successful that President Joe Biden has suggested that it be replicated in other parts of the country as well. With more than 10 million doses of the vaccine already distributed in New York City, de Blasio also announced a special incentive plan as schools prepare to open, with school PTAs eligible to receive a $100 donation for every person they recruit to be vaccinated. “We are letting every PTA know — sign up now, get people vaccinated, and have an opportunity to do a lot of good for your school community,” said the mayor. De Blasio said that the effort to vaccinate twelve- to seventeen-year-olds has been gaining steam, with 56% of those eligible in the city already receiving their first dose, nine points above the national average. “It’s making a big difference, and we’ve got almost a month till school begins,” said the mayor. “We’re going to use every single hour to get more and more kids vaccinated.”

CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO RECAP: Reb

Elazar is concerned about rabies after Osher and Shlomo were bitten by a fox, and Osher’s parents are contacted. They are frantic, but unsure if Ariella should go visit him or not. In a conversation with Ariella, Osher tells her not to come, but he inadvertently provides some description of where he’s staying in Acco — and Ariella is determined to find it. Rabbi Reiness notices that someone has been to their house while they were away for Shabbos.

“W

hat do you mean, someone was here?” Sarah stopped. “You think it was one of the boys?” “No, it wasn’t one of the boys.” Elazar stood in the same place, his gaze narrowing as he looked up the stairs. “Wait a minute.” “You think someone broke into the house? Then I won’t let you go up by yourself!” “It’s fine. We can assume that the intruder — if he broke in — did not sit and wait for us to come back.” He walked past his wife and went up the stairs. For a long moment, he studied the door from top to bottom, and then pulled his key out of his pocket. “Everything’s fine,” he called down to Sarah. “You can come up now. No one was in the house.” “So where were they?” she asked as she looked around. “Do you think someone wanted something from the carpentry shop?” She ascended the stairs as Elazar went down to get the suitcase he’d left in the middle of the yard. “That’s what I want to see,” he said. Sarah walked into the house and switched on the lights. Everything looked perfectly normal. She opened the window that faced the backyard and tried to look out into the inky darkness. Elazar was walking around, moving

pieces of wood, studying the ground… After a few minutes, he came back up to the house. “Nu?” she asked. “Yes, someone was here. There are footprints in the front yard, near the gate, and mostly in the back. The ground is a bit wet — it must have rained — so it’s very easy to see them.” “And how do you know that those aren’t footprints from one of your boys, from Friday?” “The ground was a little wet, but we left last, Sarah. Our suitcase made deep tracks on top of everyone’s footprints. Now there are new footprints at the gate.” “In detective stories, the bad guys always try to camouflage their footprints so they shouldn’t be noticed,” his wife pointed out logically. “That’s right, but when he sees that the whole yard is full of footprints anyway, then he doesn’t expect us to remember exactly which ones were near the gate and which ones weren’t.” “And these new footprints lead to the backyard?” “Uh-huh.” “Where in the backyard?” “Toward the western corner.” “The old room?” “Yes.” Rabbi Reiness was thoughtful. “The old room.” “Do you think that’s…dangerous?” “For us? No. For my plan? Maybe.” His forehead creased, but he sounded more heartened when he said, a few moments later, “In any case, even if it is one of those people who I’m worried want to ruin my plans, I hope they don’t really realize the significance of all of this. I don’t know exactly who or what they are, but I’m not sure they know exactly who I am either.” “They know you’re Reiness. And if they have an original document, they can see that your name appears there as well.” “Yes, but it’s possible that I came back to Acco just because of the deep nostalgia I have for the place.” Sarah filled the electric kettle with water. They were supposed to drink something warm on Motzei Shabbos, but they hadn’t had a chance yet, what with the tumultuous events since Shabbos had ended. “I’m not sure you’re giving the im-

pression of being only nostalgic,” she pointed out. “It’s true that the whole setting with the boys and the sea and the beach and the ancient wall is very convincing, but when you tell people that you’re not selling right now, though maybe in a year you will be, that’s…” She groped for the right word. “Suspicious?” Elazar tried to help. “I guess so,” she said. “So you think that from now on, I should stress to anyone who comes here that this place evokes such wonderful childhood memories for me, and that I just cannot give up the smell of the sea, and that I’ve always dreamed of coming back here in my old age?” “You’re not that old!” Sarah protested with a laugh; such emotional statements just did not match her very practical husband’s personality. “But something like that, yes.” “And what if someone remembers that I said that perhaps in a year or two, we would consider leaving?” “Then you’ll have to explain to the person that in two more years, we’ll be really old, b’ezras Hashem, and at that point we’ll want to live near our children.” She placed two matching mugs on the counter and yawned. “Now, let’s drink something hot and go to bed. Maybe you’ll be able to get half an hour of sleep before the sun rises.” *****

Osher I hang up the phone feeling annoyed with Ariella. How is it that she always asks me questions I don’t want to answer?! But whatever, I didn’t give her too many answers anyway. There’s a beach near almost every building in Acco, so even if she does decide to come from Bnei Brak, which I don’t think will happen, she’ll have no idea where to find me. I spoke with Tatty and Mommy yesterday. Suddenly it was nice for me to be reminded of their voices and hear how they’re worried about me. I don’t like it when people worry about me too much, but a little bit of it feels good. If Mommy were here with me, I actually might have liked it, what with all the

I think he gave the phone over to a doctor, and then he had to sign all kinds of forms and things like that. He promised to bring my health insurance and ID cards first thing in the morning. I close my eyes and try to fall asleep again, but I feel far too awake. That’s why I called Ariella before, to have her keep me company on the phone. I put the phone down on the little table next to me. Reb Elazar left his phone with me so I shouldn’t be totally disconnected from the world. That’s what he said. Shlomo has his own phone, and Reb Elazar probably thought that I wouldn’t want to ask him to use it to make calls. The phone rings suddenly, and it makes me jump. I looked at the screen, but it isn’t a familiar number. It isn’t our home number, nor Ariella’s, and nor is it one of my parents’ cell phone numbers. I deliberate for a minute, and then answer the call. What could be the big deal? It is Gadi; I recognize his voice right away. “Osher?” he says. “My uncle said he left his phone with you.” “That’s right. Why are you up so early, Gadi?” “It’s not early for me. And if my parents wouldn’t know what they were talking about, it would be very bad. Also, the doctors at the hospital wanted to speak to one of my parents, and so I had to call them. But at least the Rav agreed that my calls to them could be from a private number.. Shlomo is sleeping deeply. His bite is worse than mine; he got some stitches on his cheek. My bite is more superficial, the doctor said, and they felt it was enough to disinfect it, apply cream, and then bandage it up. Being admitted to the hospital is another. Trust me, you won’t feel good after getting these shots. It isn’t worth it.” “But how will we know if the fox has rabies or not?” I look at my bandaged leg. “Tell your father to call someone from the Health Department. They’ll know how to catch the fox.” “Fine,” Gadi says. He sounds very disappointed. “I thought you’d tell me to catch him, Osher. Right if you were here, and you would be my age, you would have done it? I think we’re pretty alike.” I also think so, I want to tell him. Instead, I say, “If I would know someone who had been bitten by the fox, and he told me how horrible it all was, I think I would not go catch it myself.” Then I add, “I hope I wouldn’t.” “Okay, so I also hope I won’t do it.” I hear him smile. “I have to go now, Osher. Bye! Refuah sheleimah!” To be continued…

S Y M B O L I C A L LY SWEET

By: Leah Stern | Photography by: C . Tarkieltaub

Symbolically sweet, honey cakes are traditionally served during the Yomim Nora’im. In chassidishe courts the rebbe hands a slice of lekach to his chassidim on Erev Yom Kippur and wishes them “L’chaim,” with the notion that if one is destined to be on the receiving end during the year, he should be yotzei with this piece of received cake. There are many varieties of honey cakes. No matter your baking style, one of these may just become your piece of cake.

HONEY BUNDT This cake is soft and full of sweet flavor for a sweet year, with a showstopping topping for a stunning presentation. This recipe yields one full Bundt pan plus six mini Bundt pans that are perfect for gift giving. The recipe can be baked as cupcakes, too — just reduce the baking time to 25 minutes.

INGREDIENTS Oil baking spray (with flour) 3½ cups WonderMills flour 1 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. cinnamon 2 T. coffee ¼ cup hot water

1¼ cups water 1 cup oil 1 cup honey 4 eggs 1½ cups sugar ½ cup brown sugar 1 T. vanilla sugar

Streusel ½ cup graham cracker crumbs 4 tsp. oil 4 tsp. flour 1½ T. brown sugar 1½ tsp. cinnamon Glaze 1½ cups confectioners’ sugar, tightly packed 2½ T. hot water 1 T. oil

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 350°. 2. Spray the Bundt pans with oil spray. 3. Combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder and cinnamon in a bowl. 4. Dissolve coffee in hot water. Combine with the remaining water, oil and honey. 5. In a separate mixer bowl, beat the eggs with the sugars on high speed until the mixture is thick and light in color. 6. Lower the speed and add the remaining ingredients, alternating the wet ingredients and the dry ones. 7. Pour the batter into pans until they’re two-thirds full. Bake the full-sized Bundt for 45 minutes and the mini Bundts for 25 to 30 minutes. 8. Combine all streusel ingredients in a pan. Bake for 10 minutes. Allow to cool. 9. Mix all the glaze ingredients. Add an additional 1 to 2 teaspoons of water, if necessary. 10. Pour the glaze over the cooled cake and sprinkle with the crumbs.

Now

it’s my turn to sharpen the proverbial pencil. This mommy/ writer/former educator was tasked with a homework assignment: research the topic of homework. It’s kind of exhilarating to make a comeback into the corridors of school. To zip up the briefcase of my youth and examine each notebook and textbook with the wisdom of hindsight and nostalgia. Yes, I’ve been a student, and a diligent one at that. Yes, I’ve been a teacher and a responsible educator to precious neshamos. And yes, baruch Hashem, I’m a mother who gets to listen, sign and participate in the completion of homework assignments on a daily basis.

Sharpen Your Opinions So, homework. What is the definition of this word? Everyone — student, teacher, principal and parent — has an opinion on this topic. Is it just a brain-drain, an attempt to increase the workload of student and parent? Is it a magical formula? (Fill out one page of math and complete a list of spelling words, and your daughter/student will just ace her schoolwork and gain a lesson in responsibility that will last her a lifetime!) What is the totality of homework, with all its textbooks, notebooks and practice books? At the end of the school day, everyone’s opinion provides important clarification and insight on this important topic. Mothers opine, teachers suggest, principals weigh in, and students sigh, shrug and jump for joy. (That last is when there isn’t any homework!) Today we’ll get everyone together in one classroom to finally learn the “Homework Lesson” and analyze the pros and cons of the homework debate.

Mommy’s Mind Chatter Baby’s crying, there’s no dinner on the table, and doctor’s beeping in, but, hey, anything and everything is on hold. Make way, because, MOMMY, WE NEED TO DO HOMEWORK, NOW!

Home or Work? Yes, it’s always busy on the home front. There’s tons of home work, in the literal sense of the word; think appointments, laundry, Shabbos and yom tov prep, and more. Therefore, parents appreciate when homework is nothing more than highly doable work to be done at home. “I understand the importance of homework, and I definitely encourage my daughters to do their assigned work in a timely and responsible manner. But I would suggest homework to be short and to the point,”

The Boro Park View

111

Rochel S., a fellow mother, suggests. “This is how it stays on positive turf, it’s impactful in terms of review and retention, and I get to take a peek into my daughter’s schoolwork.” This opinion is the consensus among parents interviewed. When homework does not take the bulk of the afternoon, students put their head to it and do it with a smile. From a parent’s viewpoint, homework of this type is regarded as something they can make time for. The focus and subsequent positivity generated by such a well-balanced approach goes a long way in impacting schoolwork. “Independence is the name of the game (or assignment). The more kids can do by themselves, the more tension is avoided and the more it builds their self-confidence and can-do attitude toward scholastic achievements and life in general,” Tzila, a busy mother who is also employed in chinuch, says with conviction. “I appreciate when teachers exhibit common sense and pragmatism in the implementation of homework. One teacher sent home a sand-timer for timed homework. To me, it was like, ‘Wow, she gets it. She knows what a five o’clock afternoon scene in a Yiddishe home looks like.’”

Add Positivity, Divide Stress, Subtract Pressure It is Erev Purim or Pesach or Sukkos. It is the end of the school year, when jump ropes and slides beckon. Where does homework come into that equation? “Some periods of the year are more hectic than others, and homework needs to be reevaluated to make it fit into the realms of possibility,” a mother of several daughters says. “I’ve had a daughter who had to self-check her own work, and the teacher rewarded her for that effort. Also, at peak yom tov season, there was a no-homework policy in the school.” I nod along with her pithy observation and offer my opinion: “Truthfully, I am a big homework fan, but was so thankful to my daughter’s teacher for absolving them of homework responsibilities at the end of the school year. My daughter felt validated; it was amazing that her teacher understood that she’d rather play and jump. And I was happy that she could enjoy some childhood fun without added stress.”

From the Teacher’s Progress Report Hindy is almost making the threshold. She doesn’t need more than that ten-minute homework to shine scholastically, but since that’s not happening, we’ll need to consider remedial. And then look at how well Pessy’s doing now; kudos to her devoted mother! Homework is often the supplemental vitamin that boosts overall achievement.

The Grand Homework Debate In recent years, homework policy and implementation have been on the national debate stage. Of late, some public schools have labeled homework archaic and relegated its practice to the dusty shelves of history, together with cursive writing and blackboards. This has sparked debate, articles and new homework policies. The most noteworthy research on this topic was conducted by psychology professor at Duke University, Harris Cooper. Here are some of his findings: • Cooper discovered that there is a correlation between good grades and homework, especially with older students. • Cooper delved into the origins of homework and he believes that the very idea of homework was spurred by the launching of Russia’s Sputnik satellite in 1957. The advancement of science and technology accelerated the competition for good grades and excellence in science and math — and thus, the homework assignment was born. • In the final analysis, Cooper offers a point to ponder: “A good way to think about homework is the way you think about medications or dietary supplements. If you take too little, they’ll have no effect. If you take too much, they can kill you. If you take the right amount, you’ll get better.”

Making Homework Work Here are some ways to color homework time with sunshine yellow and positive purple. • Reserved for Homework: Have a special homework nook, homework snack and designated timeframe when homework is done (for example, right after supper). This makes homework a predictable and pleasant task. • I’m the Teacher: For a young child, playing teacher may be the ultimate dream come true. Have a teacher’s briefcase (you can use an old pocketbook for this purpose), stickers, stamp pad, and an assortment of teacher paraphernalia. When doing homework, your child can use these supplies and make her teacher proud. • Homework Fun: Occasionally, you can play a homework game. For spelling memorization, you can play “guess the word” by giving clues to help guess the correct word. Additionally, you can teach your child the skill of learning through song when memorizing teitch, shorashim, dates or difficult spelling words. Kriah and reading can become a thrilling experience when recorded into a device. A game that goes over very well with early readers is “Let’s Voice Change”— read this line in a Tatty voice, a baby voice, a gruff voice, and so on. • Homework Friendship Moment: When a child needs a real homework pick-meup, you can suggest she call a friend and do homework together over the phone.

Homework: The Subject of the Matter The teachers of our children deserve accolades, thank-you notes and chocolate. On second thought, they deserve way more; they deserve the world. They shape minds, hearts and the future generation of Klal Yisroel. Remuneration of any scope or size can barely express our admiration and thanks to our educators. Let’s hear what our chinuch experts have to say on the subject of homework. “What is homework? I feel we need to properly define and identify this word to fully comprehend its importance and value,” Mrs. Horowitz, a renowned teacher, tells me. “Homework is, and should be, a quick review of important skills and concepts.” She goes into teaching mode and offers an explanation: “Homework is like brushing your teeth. Why do you brush your teeth? To avoid decay. Tooth-brushing cleans away the residue of sugar and food decay that accumulate on our teeth. This can sometimes prevent the toothaches (and heartaches) that come with extensive cavities and dental work. “Homework should be just that: a review, or brush-up of schoolwork. If parents notice a cavity, so to speak, in schoolwork, it is time for some hygienic or extensive dental work (i.e., remediation).” Her colleague, also a veteran teacher, interjects, “I tell my students, ‘Homework is homework for the student, not the mother. You are responsible to complete it, because your mother juggles a myriad of other responsibilities.’ I also try to keep homework basic and simple so that students can be their own teachers and let Mommy do her work undisturbed.” On the Same Page What happens when homework is just too heavy a backpack for a student’s slight shoulders to carry? Sometimes the load needs to be lightened. Mommy is a kimpeturin? Brother is getting married? Bubby is visiting from Eretz Yisroel? “Mothers should know that my phone number on the letter that was sent home at the beginning of the school year was not a typo!” Mrs. Weiss, a dynamic elementary school teacher quips. “I appreciate parental feedback and understand that homework is not an open-and-shut assignment.” What I gathered from her words is truly eye-opening and relevant. Chinuch is a partnership, and parents can sometimes glean so much from homework time. Homework should not be stressful, so if your child is having a hard time with the material, she may have gaps in her schoolwork and need intervention, or just simply a friendly tip or re-teach. Also, educators are very approachable and can collaborate to figure out solutions so the homework-school synergy should work out well. Some kids just need an extra pat on the back, a private motivational chart, or one or two homeworkfree days, and teachers are more than glad to work with parents.

The Alef-Beis of Early Literacy Kriah and early literacy are the fundamentals and building blocks of learning. It is crucial for a child to have reading down pat — and this is where homework really comes into play. “Do listen to your child read. It is the biggest gift you can give her. From my side, I try to keep homework to a five-minute maximum. But these five minutes are five mega-minute doses, five highly concentrated learning multi-vitamins. I cannot say it or stress it enough,” Mrs. Neumann, a first-grade teacher with fifteen years of experience implores. “I’ve had mothers making such crucial observations: ‘My child is confusing this and that letter,’ or, ‘My child is weak in this concept.’ And this helps us keep the child on the right track,” she adds. Golda, a skilled curriculum adviser, sees it differently. “I think it is fine for parents to listen in on a child’s kriah on a thrice-weekly basis, and children should be given alternative assignments (meaning, self-check worksheets) on other days,” she says, with the confidence that stems from experience. “I had a parent telling me that she needed to take an Advil before doing homework with her first-grader,” I tell my close friend Suri, who is also an excellent teacher. “She had a colicky newborn and a toddler, and could not carve out that island of time to sit and listen to her child enunciating nekudos or reading passages.” “Why didn’t she call the teacher or principal?” Suri laments. “Parents should call me (at appropriate times) and we can problem-solve. Our school has an after-school program, which is proving to be a rousing success. Students munch on an after-school snack and do homework with experienced mentors. If the going gets busy at home, a child needs some extra attention, or is experiencing minor academic issues, I would highly recommend that she joins that program.”

From the Principal’s Desk Homework in a nutshell: a fusion of home and school collaboration. A powerful opportunity to foster responsibility and good study habits. Teachers benefit, parents benefit, and students benefit.

Spell R-e-s-p-o-n-s-i-b-i-l-i-t-y Research suggests a ratio of ten minutes of homework per grade level. In other words, first grade, ten minutes; second grade, twenty minutes... But our charges live in a totally different universe than the common student, and everything is taken into consideration. “My primary reason for giving homework is for students to learn responsibility. Subjects are important, good grades are nice, but responsibility — achrayus — is one of the core values I want to impart in my curriculum,” Mrs. Katz, a highly regarded principal, says. “Achrayus has such an overarching effect on our roles as Yidden and the future mothers of Klal Yisroel. However, there is a But with a capital B on the subject of homework…”

Point of Homework “The way I see it,” Yocheved, an acclaimed educator in the administrative hierarchy, tells me, “before you go to a chasunah, you look yourself in the mirror. You check: Is my dress flattering? Is it perfectly clean? Does my necklace complement my attire? “The same holds true for homework. Homework is a quick once-over. It offers the student, mother and teacher a chance to reflect. It is a mirror-view on progress. If a student does homework well, she can thank Hashem for her progress. If a mother sees her daughter has difficulty with a concept or rule, she can spend some time reviewing it with her. And in the event where a student really struggles, we can hone in on it straightaway.” I like Yocheved’s analogy. Sometimes all it takes is a look in the mirror and a comb-through to look put together again.

Mrs. Katz pauses, and I note that homework is a hotbutton issue that she has contemplated and debated often, and it seems that she has developed a unique perspective on this daily chore. “BUT, there is also achrayus on our part. Kids need to be kids. A home needs to be a happy and stressfree environment and radiate simcha. I always supervise my teachers to make sure that homework is simple. One of my teachers even created a program called HomeFun.”

Back to school means back to rules. The relative freedom of summer and bein hazmanim is replaced with the rigidity of schedules, seder and… rules. While neither students nor teachers are big fans of school rules, we should be pleased that today’s school rules are not as extreme and draconian as they have been in the past.

For instance, I know you’ll find it hard to believe, but once, in the deep, dark past, they actually forced students (and teachers too!) to spend the entire school day wearing uncomfortable masks that covered most of their faces! If you think that’s meshugah, they also, believe it or not, forced kids to stand six or even twelve feet from each other when they were trying to play! Can you imagine? I guess we should be grateful that we live in the modern age! The truth is, however, that there are plenty of silly school rules even in our modern days. In France, for instance, since 2011, there’s been a law that forbids school cafeterias from serving ketchup. Talk about torture. I’m sure food in educational institutions has improved since I was in school, but back in the day, drowning certain school lunches in ketchup was the only thing that upgraded them from inedible to sort-of edible. Why the ban? It seems that they feel ketchup is too... er, American, and French food should be eaten only with… French dressing? But apparently, there is good news, because they made one important exception: Ketchup may be served with, of all things, French fries (although I don’t think that’s what they call them there). My personal theory is that it really has to do with the color red. I’ll tell you why. For a long time, it’s been standard for teachers to mark students’ papers in red ink. For one thing, it made it easier to see the corrections, and let’s face it, while a grade of 100, or even 95, looks geshmak in any color, a not-so-great grade just seems to have a bigger impact in red. Maybe too big of an impact, though, because red ink for grading is now being banned by schools all over. The color is apparently considered “too mean” and too shtark. Well, at least now they won’t have to worry about teachers marking papers with ketchup. Back when I was in school, we were always encouraged not to leave a mess, trash on the floor, and so on, as it isn’t good middos to just leave things for the janitor to clean up. Well, in Japan, kids do not have to worry about that one at all, because they are the janitors. In the Land of the Rising Sun, the rule is that the students themselves roll up their sleeves and clean every single part of their campus, including the bathrooms. But before you teachers get any ideas, it isn’t only students who have to clean. Students, teachers, school staff, and even the vice principal and principal all join the daily cleanup, which

they call souji (yes, it does kind of sound like sponja), with each person being assigned their own designated areas. But Japan and France sound like picnics compared to the Red (as in, communist) rules in North Korea. There they have many strange rules, but they all boil down to essentially one: Give lots of kavod to the country’s dictator. For instance, they have a rule that all kids have to spend at least 170 hours of class time every year studying facts about their “wonderful” leader. Their textbooks revolve around their great Supreme Leader, Kim Jong Un, his family and

his achievements. If that sounds boring, it is, but at least it’s full of interesting, made-up bubbe maasehs such as that he was able to accurately shoot a gun by the age of three and has the ability to control the weather. But they take it even further. When the students of North Korean schools do have the opportunity to lighten up and sing, there’s one small catch. The songs the students (or any citizens of the country, for that matter) are allowed to sing or listen to are all about how wonderful is, you guessed it, Kim Jong Un, their Supreme Leader.

These rules may seem like a joke, but they’re really no laughing matter. That’s because students in North Korea who fail to comply with these and the million other ridiculous rules can get penalties that include forced labor camps and capital punishment. Kind of makes ketchup-less burgers and janitor duty seem like a party, no? According to another modern school policy, popular in schools in England, students are not allowed to have best friends. Not just no BFFs, but no BFAAs (best friends at all)! Indeed, England seems to be big on rules. Nottinghamshire High School, also in England, banned the raising of hands when answering questions in class. The head teacher said that the same hands would always go up, and that this does not encourage or support the morale of those who don’t know the answer. I suppose the idea is that if the same voices just yell out the answers without raising their hands, it’s better somehow. Schools over in China schedule 30-minute naps in the middle of the day for (not just young) students. Students are allowed to bring blankets and pillows from home, and those in charge claim that the nap improves the memory of, and provides energy to, students. I’m not sure the Chinese kids think it’s such a good idea, but I’ll bet the teachers do — especially if they get to nap too. It’s been said that the difference between being a kid and an adult is that kids don’t want to take naps and have to, while adults want to take naps but aren’t allowed to. It is certainly true that rules, at school and anywhere, can be annoying, but good ones are essential. It’s amazing what people will do without them. I was once at a store and happened to notice a long list of “employee rules” tacked behind the stockroom door. I remarked to the baal habayis, whom I knew, that most of the rules seemed like simple common sense. Why did they need to be written out like that? The store owner laughed and told me, “I thought so too; I never planned to make a list. But every single one of these rules was written down only after one of my workers did the opposite!” Nesanel Yoel Safran is a writer, chef and student of Torah and life. FROM THE SEFER “HAKESER VEHAKAVOD”: Harav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv zt”l stated that it was more praiseworthy for a woman to cover her hair with a kerchief than a wig. In his words,

‫הואיל והנידון דפאה נכרית היא נידון‬ ‫ אזי ברור שעדיף‬,‫בעיקר ההלכה‬ ‫מטפחת שהוא ענין על פי הלכה‬

Since a wig is a deliberation in the essence of the halacha, therefore it is clear that it is preferable to wear a kerchief as it is a matter of halacha.” (8 ‫)דעת רבותינו חלק א עמוד‬

A woman who learned that there may be a problem of halacha with wearing a sheitel, asked her husband:

“Maybe I should wear a tichel?“ Her husband answered that he was not a posek and he had not analyzed this topic, but she could go to the gadol hador, Rav Elyashiv, and ask him how she should proceed. The woman went to Rav Elyashiv and asked him, in her purity and innocence, “Is it true that wearing a sheitel is questionable and it is better to wear a tichel in order to fulfill the will of Hashem according to all poskim? I want to do the will of Hashem, and I am ready to do whatever the Rav will tell me. If the Rav advises that I wear a tichel– I am ready. It’s just that this is all new to me. I never knew about this problem.” Rav Elyashiv answered clearly, “Surely it is better to wear a tichel. What is the question or doubt about it? Indeed, there are poskim who are of the opinion that a woman who wears a sheitel in public does not fulfill the halacha of covering the head. Only one who wears a tichel fulfills the halacha according to all poskim. A tichel is glatt.” Upon hearing these words, the woman resolved to wear only a tichel, since through this she performs her special mitzvah according to the opinions of all poskim.

RABBI MOSHE ELYASHIV SON OF THE GAON RAV YOSEF SHALOM ELYASHIV ZT”L The Holy City of Jerusalem, May it be rebuilt quickly in our days, Amen

To the women who participate in the Shmiras Halashon and Tznius Shiur. May the pleasantness of Hashem be upon you for all your matters. Your understanding of the opinion of my late father and teacher the Gaon Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv zt"l is correct and true, that he prefers covering the hair of the head with a kerchief (tichel) or hat rather than covering the hair with a modest wig, because there are poskim who forbid covering the hair with even a modest wig. (A non-modest wig is forbidden by halacha according to everyone). We heard the Rav say this several times. May all those who increase their tznius and shmiras haloshon be blessed with health and success in everything, and may they have holy nachas from all their offspring. Signed with my blessing Moshe Elyashiv the son of my father and teacher, Rav of the whole Jewish nation, The Gaon Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv zt"l

While each of the four seasons takes up the same amount of space on the calendar, spring and fall seem shorter than summer and winter to me. Does it also seem like that to you? There’s something about the exquisiteness of these seasons — each day a perfectly plucked jewel of fresh air and stunning scenery — that begs us to make the most of them and try to bottle the magic for the long haul ahead. So here’s to our autumn mission of truly appreciating Hashem’s gifts and having as many “mah rabu” moments as we can. Enjoy this curated collection of things to do and places to go. You’ll get to really soak up the season and create a treasure of quality time with the family. 130

PLAY WITH ME Is anything as much fun as a romp in the leaves? Let’s join the young ones! When they’re snug and sweet in the new season’s fabrics and colors, let’s lead them in some fantastically fun fall games. Try this cute twist on Duck, Duck, Goose: Settle everyone in a circle on the crunchy leaves to play LEAF, LEAF, PINECONE. Whoever’s “it” goes around the circle, touches each player’s head, and says, “Leaf.” Stopping at any player of their choice, whoever’s “it” drops a pinecone in that player’s lap while say-

ing, “Pinecone!” Then the player who’s “it” tries to run back to his/her place without being tagged by the pinecone recipient, who becomes “it” if he/she didn’t tag the pinecone-dropper.

GOODBYE, FOREVER! HEAT TREATMENT

THE SUPE RI METH OR FOR BEDOD ERADICATBUG ION

After all that sitting, let the kids run around to do a LEAF COUNT. Catching falling leaves is fantastic for gross motor training, hand-eye coordination and sensory input of all kinds. Have the kids catch and count leaves as they fall; you’ll be surprised at how much fun this deceptively simple game turns out to be! If your yard boasts a slide, a LEAF SLIDE is a total blast. Rake up a huge pile of leaves at the bottom of your slide, and have everyone zoom right in! How about bowling in your own backyard? Set up your FRISBEE BOWLING alley with six large stacked rocks or large leaves or small sticks stuck in the ground in a bowling pin formation. Players must toss their Frisbee from the other end of the yard to knock down or break their makeshift bowling pins. Like regular bowling, each person gets two tries per turn. Keep score to see who ends up with the most points for the win!

CRAFT ME HAPPY What about autumn days that are rainy, or too brisk for bouncing around outdoors? That’s when you need themed games and crafts to bring all the autumn ambience to your kitchen and playroom tables. Here’s a game: Have a LEAF RACE! Arrange all players at a table, and give each one a straw and a leaf. See who can be the first to blow their leaf across the table with their straw! And because you can never have enough craft ideas to sate the colorful minds and busy hands of kids, add pizazz to their art routines with these fallthemed ideas: Here’s a fun one: SUN PRINTS. These take a few days to develop, which just ups the excitement of creating something new. First, run out on a leaf tour to gather some beautiful leaf specimens. Back inside, use a bit of glue to attach a leaf (or two or three) to a piece of colored construction paper. Tape the paper to a window with lots of sun exposure, with the leaf/leaves facing out. Leave it there for three to four days, or until you notice that the paper’s color has faded. Remove the paper from the window, and gently peel away the leaf to reveal your very own sun print! Now you can frame, hang and revel in the homegrown art. You can also bring the leaves to your table! Create the most adorable FALL

PLACEMATS by having the kids collect and glue various leaves on light-colored sheets of construction paper. Apply transparent contact paper to the leaf-adorned side and then to the back of the paper. Trim the excess contact paper around the edges, and seal the outer edges with colored tape. Bon appétit! How about a nature walk in which you pick up a pretty souvenir? I love this idea of discovering nature and turning it into a craft straightaway. Make FALL NATURE BRACELETS by wrapping a piece of masking tape — sticky side out — around each child’s wrist. Go on a nature walk, and have the kids collect as many different leaves as they can. As soon as they’re collected, they can be stuck onto the tape bracelets! Have you also plotzed from puzzle piece overload? As in, the 100-piece puzzle that only has 80 pieces left but is somehow still hanging around your toy closet? Here’s the sweetest way to turn them into art: Make a FALL PUZZLE TREE! Draw a tree trunk and limbs, or cut one out of paper and glue it to a piece of background paper. If your puzzle pieces aren’t quite fall-colored, paint them first in autumn’s best shades. Glue the pieces to the branches of your tree — and presto! More space on the shelf and more art to hang!

Supplies: 2 sheets stiff black paper 1 sheet cream-colored paper 1 sheet hard plastic (transparency) 1 sheet textured gold paper 1 sheet glossy red paper (I used a piece of wrapping paper) Scissors Razor blade Glue stick Black Sharpie marker Scotch tape Tracers (included at the end of the instructions)

The Cover 1. Fold one black paper in half, in the width. 2. Cut out the words “shanah tovah umesukah,” and place them on the black paper. Use tape to set them lightly in place. • Paste the tape very lightly on the black paper so you can remove it easily when you’re done cutting. 3. Use the razor blade to cut out the letters. Follow these tips: • Make sure the black paper is UNFOLDED at this point. • Place the paper on something thick that can get ruined, such as a piece of cardboard or an old notepad. • Don’t cut out one letter at a time. Instead, cut all the horizontal lines first, then rotate the paper so that all vertical lines are now horizontal, and cut those. Lastly, go through each letter to make sure all the lines were cut. 4. Very carefully punch out the letters (both the white paper and the black). • Keep the razor blade on hand in case you need to recut any lines. You might also want to use the tip of the blade to help with punching out the letters. 5. Remove the white paper. 6. Cut a piece of the gold sheet to fit the size of the words. 7. Carefully put glue on the back of the black paper, around and between all of the letters. 8. Stick the gold paper onto the black paper, with the gold side facing the glue. 9. Set this paper aside. You can place it under some books so the papers stay nice and neat.

Let’s Get Popping! 1. Fold the second black paper in half widthwise. 2. Use the centimeter ruler to measure 4 cm in the center of the folded edge of the paper. Mark the two ends. 3. At each of these two ends (of the center 4 cm) measure 5 cm deep, and cut. • You should now have two slits on the folded end that are both 5 cm deep and 4 cm apart. 4. Stick the flap into the card so that it’s now folded the opposite way, and when you open the card it should pop up. 5. At the top end of this new flap, cut two additional slits that are 3 cm deep and 1 cm apart. 6. Again, stick the flap into the card. Now, when you open the card, you should have a double pop-up. 7. Set this aside for later.

Dip the Apple in the Honey... 1. Tape the honey dish to the plastic sheet. 2. Trace the honey jar with a Sharpie marker. 3. Remove the paper and cut out the plastic honey jar. 4. Tape the honey jar tracer to the gold sheet. Cut out the bottom part of the jar. 5. Put glue on the top of the gold sheet. Stick the gold sheet to the plastic jar to “fill it with honey”! 6. Tape the apple slice tracer to the cream-colored paper and cut out the slice of apple. 7. Tape the apple peel tracer to the red paper. Cut out the apple peel. 8. Glue the red peel to the apple slice. 9. Draw a seed with the Sharpie marker.

Make It Pop! 1. Put glue on both front-facing parts of the pop-up. 2. Stick on the honey jar and apple slice. 3. Put glue on the outer sides of this card, and paste it into the card with the cover.

For nearly a millennium, metal tins were all there was… It started out as a serviceable utility item for workmen and soon turned into a back-toschool fashion statement. And before long, an entire lunchbox culture took the stage.

1880s

1902

1920s

It was a long workday at the quarry, construction site or factory. The workmen brought along lunch, which they stored in heavy-duty metal pails designed for protection from the rough elements in their environment. Soon, however, they discovered that lighter metal tins were more practical.

The first metal containers officially designed for lunchbox use arrived on the scene. Domeshaped and with an industrial appearance, the boxes were rather unappealing.

Like father, like son. It wasn’t long before the lunchbox fad reached schools. Kids wanted to be just like their dads and began taking their lunches to school in tins too. Their lunch containers resembled picnic baskets, and many featured child-friendly drawings.

Reusing tobacco or cookie tins became the economical — and fashionable — way to go. In the process, popular brands such as Brotherhood Tobacco and Crow-Mo Smokers got free publicity.

A lunchbox was a serious investment, intended to last schoolchildren several years.

Ironically, this also unified the blue-collar laborers and the executives, because everyone grew accustomed to toting these reusable makeshift “lunchboxes,” and they made for great conversation starters.

Material Matters

Mothers Protest

New Options

Why stick with clumsy, unmalleable metal when supple vinyl could do?

In Florida, a group of mothers campaigned to banish metal lunchboxes, claiming they could cause head injuries if kids were to use them to hit their classmates.

Growing concern over the safety of metal containers helped plastic make its way onto the lunchbox scene. Neither hard like metal nor soft like vinyl, hard plastic provided a practical solution. The designs were also able to be applied with easy-to-produce decals.

Vinyl lunch containers had their heyday for a short time during the 1960s. But since the food often didn’t store well in these less-than-durable “boxes,” they quickly went out of style. Metal containers remained the way to go.

By 1985, many school cafeterias and lunchrooms banned metal boxes, bringing their production to a halt.

In the 1990s, soft-sided padded lunch containers that could easily be packed inside a backpack were on the rise. Lunchboxes grew more compact. Soon environmental concerns over BPA and food safety introduced other materials to the lunchbox scene, such as neoprene, which reduces condensation and can be washed easily, in addition to canvas and polyester.

s is All it take tes five minu big to make a in dif ference day. your kid’s

Luke Pieczynski used his creativity to pen more than 700 different notes that he stuck in his daughter’s lunchbox over the course of two years. The girl, who had been going through a rough time at school, concurred that the little boosts kept her motivated for the rest of the day.

By: T. Gestetner

Box Collectors Fancy collecting old lunchboxes? There’s a special title for you: boxer. As Allen Woodwall, famous “boxer” and the owner of the Lunchbox Museum in Georgia, claims, your favorite lunchbox sparks childhood memories and brings you back to feeling like a kid again. His museum is entirely dedicated to old classic lunchboxes and has more than 2,000 pieces on display. The Smithsonian National Museum of American History also hosts a display of unique lunchboxes.

1930s

1935

1950s

Modernization brought electric lunchboxes to the scene. With a built-in plug, workers could plug in their aluminum boxes to warm up their lunch.

Lunchboxes became a fun fashion statement when the Geuder, Paeschke and Frey brand received a license to imprint images of Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse on the front of the containers. Other brands followed suit, and soon famous characters were adorning lunchboxes and their coordinating thermos bottles.

Soon character-themed boxes jump-started the “Golden Age of Lunchboxes.” One popular design — a school bus seating Jiminy Cricket, Pinocchio, Dumbo, Minnie and Mickey — sold for $2.39. Today, it can be bought for $300 to $500.

Images were etched into the metal using old-fashioned lithography. The metal plates were made by hand and then fed through the printing machine a number of times — once for each color that was imprinted. It was a long, tedious process, but it made for some proud moments as kids toted their themed containers to school.

Priciest

Largest

The pure gold Oscheriyori lunchbox — valued at more than $150K!

On April 12, 2015, a lunchbox was measured in South Africa at a whopping 299.11 feet. It was filled with produce that was later donated to local charities.

There was fierce competition between the big brands such as Aladdin and Thermos. More than 120 million lunchboxes were sold in the United States that decade.

When you’re looking to take lunch to work or school, a brown paper bag can suffice. But why make do with squashed food when there’s a copious range of commercially designed boxes specifically crafted for this purpose? Today, some 18 million kids across the United States bring their lunch to school in lunchboxes. August 25, 2021
