FY 2018

BRANDYWINE CONSERVANCY & MUSEUM OF ART

Dear Friends, Fiscal year 2018 was a busy one at the Brandywine, full of terrific exhibitions, land protection, entertaining events and educational programming. It was also a year in which we celebrated two men—Andrew Wyeth and George A. “Frolic” Weymouth— whose contributions to our organization and to the fields of art and conservation shaped the Brandywine’s mission over its first 50 years. We started the year with the groundbreaking Andrew Wyeth: In Retrospect, the most comprehensive exhibition of Wyeth’s work. Co-organized by the Brandywine and the Seattle Art Museum, Andrew Wyeth: In Retrospect featured more than 100 works spanning the artist’s long career and received national critical acclaim. The accompanying catalogue represents a milestone in scholarship on the artist. It provided insightful contextual analysis of Wyeth's career and thought-provoking essays on key aspects of the artist's work by scholars from both the United States and Japan. Attracting visitors from around the world to the Museum’s galleries, the exhibition was bolstered by a robust slate of programming that engaged children and adults. It was a complete triumph by every metric of success and went on to more success and further praise in Seattle. On July 12, 2017, the 100th anniversary of Andrew Wyeth’s birth, we welcomed representatives from the United States Postal Service, members of the Wyeth family and the general public to the Museum courtyard for the national launch of the Andrew Wyeth Forever postage stamps. Dignitaries from the Pennsylvania Senate and House of Representatives also joined us to present resolutions honoring the artist’s life, and we offered a sneak preview of the then-unfinished PBS American Masters Andrew Wyeth documentary. We were honored to have been a key partner in the creation of this film that presents a fascinating and moving depiction of Wyeth’s life, and beautifully captures the three national historic landmarks that were key to his work and that we made open to the public. The year was indeed a fitting celebration of one of the nation’s most important artists— one whose legacy lives on here at the Brandywine through the Museum’s collections, its historic properties, and through the Conservancy’s work to protect the landscapes of this region, many of which have been immortalized in Wyeth’s iconic paintings. The Conservancy achieved great success in its open space and clean water initiatives this year and marked four years of collaboration with our Brandywine-Christina Watershed Partners: a group of six nonprofits working together to protect and restore water quality in one of the nation’s most historic small watersheds. Part of the larger Delaware River Watershed Initiative (DRWI) developed and funded by the William Penn Foundation, the Brandywine-Christina Watershed Partners worked together to implement clean water initiatives in the watershed that supplies drinking water to more than half a million people in Pennsylvania and Delaware. As a result, the Conservancy and its partners preserved dozens of farms near impacted streams, implemented hundreds of agricultural best management practices on critical farms near headwater streams, installed miles of stream bank fencing, and planted tens of thousands of

trees to act as stream side buffers. The impact of these efforts is both undeniable and long-lasting and was underscored in May when the Brandywine Conservancy and its partners hosted the Clean Water Conference. The conference gave us and our partners the chance to engage with our conservation peers as we presented four years of accomplishments in the Brandywine-Christina Watershed. We look forward to building on these achievements in the future as the William Penn Foundation has pledged more than $40 million of new funding to continue the DRWI for the next three years. Water was also the theme of highwatermarks, a sweeping video installation that opened in October exploring the Brandywine River. This project was the culminating project of artist Dylan Gauthier’s year-long residency, part of the Museum’s initiative to explore the intersection between art and nature. In the video Gauthier traced the path of the Brandywine River from its headwaters among the farms of Honey Brook Township, through industrial towns like Coatesville and the rolling hills of Chadds Ford to the city of Wilmington, Delaware. Shot on location through all four seasons, highwatermarks is a remarkable piece of art that brought our two operating programs together in an exquisite visual tour de force. From January through June 2018, we featured the first comprehensive exhibition of works by our late co-founder and chairman, George A. “Frolic” Weymouth. While recognized as a philanthropist promoting art and land conservation in the Brandywine Valley, Frolic was less well known as an artist. The Way Back: The Paintings of George A. Weymouth changed that. Featuring 65 of his finest works of art created over seven decades, this remarkable retrospective included the people and places that had significance to him. Organizing the exhibition, and the major catalogue that accompanied it, was a labor of love for all involved, and we were humbled—though not surprised—that financial support for The Way Back and its catalogue exceeded all expectations. Significant contributions came from his son, Mac, and his wife, Toni, and some of Frolic’s closest friends—Anson and Debra Beard, Jr., Richard and Sheila Sanford, and Jamie Wyeth, and his late wife, Phyllis, as well as additional gifts from more than 100 other donors. The outpouring of support was a true testament of Frolic’s impact and legacy. We closed the fiscal year with the opening of Natural Wonders: The Sublime in Contemporary Art. This landmark exhibition featured works by 13 renowned artists, each reflecting on the power of nature and threats to the environment with stunning sculptures, video installations and photographs that heightened our sense of wonder and raised questions about our relationship with the natural world. It was, in short, a year we will never forget, not only because of what we accomplished but because those accomplishments were made possible thanks to the unwavering generosity of so many members, donors and friends. Your support, encouragement and resolute belief in our mission continues to embolden our vision for the future.

BRANDYWINE CONSERVANCY & MUSEUM OF ART

Brandywine Heritage Society Founded in 1999, the Brandywine Heritage Society is dedicated to those very special individuals who have provided for the Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art in their estate plans or planned a future gift. Such gifts include bequests, charitable gift annuities, life income and lead trusts, gifts of life insurance and retirement accounts, and donations of a personal residence or farm with the retention of a life estate. Through their foresight and generosity, Brandywine Heritage Society members help ensure that vital works of art and irreplaceable land, water, and historic resources will be preserved and shared with generations to come.
