Dear Friends, Benjamin Franklin once said, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.” As we look back on the Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art’s last fiscal year, planning was very much central to all that we did. Since 2019, we've been working with the highly respected firms Cooper Robertson and OLIN to create a master plan for our Chadds Ford campus. The plan will lay the groundwork for an exciting new vision, not only for an enhanced home for the Museum’s expanding collection and array of programs but a landscape plan that amplifies the beauty of our setting and better reflects the Conservancy’s ever more important work in preserving the area’s natural resources. We look forward to sharing this with you next year. You’ll read elsewhere in this report about successes in both the Museum and the Conservancy. Our staff worked hard and planned ambitiously but thoughtfully as they laid out a years-long exhibitions and programming schedule and prioritized lands for preservation and sound stewardship. As a result, we went into fiscal year 2020 with a clear roadmap that was aspirational yet attainable. Not everything went according to plan, though, due to Covid-19. We were forced to recalibrate and develop new plans to continue our important work. “Brandywine at Home” took our programs and exhibitions virtual, a move that was more popular than we ever could have imagined. We retooled our public spaces and trained our front-line staff to the extent that more than one visitor paid us the compliment “the Museum is the only public place I’m comfortable bringing my family.” And, we prepared our trails and preserves to welcome more visitors than usual who were eager to spend time with friends and family outdoors or who sought the quiet of nature to relieve the stresses of quarantine. We hope you’ve taken advantage of the many opportunities for learning and wellness that we provided this year whether they were in person or online. We hope, too, that our exhibitions, programs, preserves and trails are as much—if not more!—a part of your life now as they have always been. We’ll never stop planning. But, we’ll also never stop innovating to ensure that— when plans go awry—we’re able to flex our creativity and change our tack so we can continue to offer the best experiences possible. We’re humbled by the ongoing generosity of our members, municipal partners and friends. Your gifts and unwavering encouragement kept us upbeat, energized and focused. Our success is yours. Best regards,

BRANDYWINE CONSERVANCY & MUSEUM OF ART
Brandywine Heritage Society Founded in 1999, the Brandywine Heritage Society is dedicated to those very special individuals who have provided for the Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art in their estate plans or planned a future gift. Such gifts include bequests, charitable gift annuities, life income and lead trusts, gifts of life insurance and retirement accounts, and donations of a personal residence or farm with the retention of a life estate. Through their foresight and generosity, Brandywine Heritage Society members help ensure that vital works of art and irreplaceable land, water and historic resources will be preserved and shared with generations to come.
