FY 2021
BRANDYWINE CONSERVANCY & MUSEUM OF ART
Dear Friends, Falling squarely in the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the twelve months that made up Brandywine’s past fiscal year were unlike any other in our organization’s history. The quarantines and shutdowns collectively upended all of our lives and brought challenges we never could have expected. Yet, as always, our staff rose to the occasion and unleashed their creativity to bring both regular and new programs to life virtually. By the beginning of the fiscal year in July 2020, our roster of online offerings was full and varied and helped us stay connected—to each other and to Brandywine’s important mission. Our online programming revealed two surprises. First, while we already knew that what we do is important regionally, we quickly realized that there was a much larger appetite for the Brandywine as people joined us from across the country and around the world to learn about our work and to participate in our programs. As we welcomed participants from places like South Africa, China and Australia, we were heartened to know that our important work resonated well beyond the mid-Atlantic. Something else that took us by surprise was how much better we got to know each other online. As the pandemic wore on, our connections became a little less formal and a little more authentic. We met pets and children on Zoom meetings and glimpsed piles of laundry to be folded that mimicked our own. In short, we all bonded over the absurdity and unique hardships of life lived in a pandemic. Admittedly, at times we ached for in-person contact, and when it was possible to be together, we reveled in the “wrinkle the eye” smiles we saw above masks in our galleries and the hearty waves that were shared across our Café. We also saw a huge spike in people exploring, connecting with and seeking respite in the great outdoors—both on the trails of our main campus in Chadds Ford, as well as throughout our Laurels and Waterloo Mills Preserves. A renewed appreciation for the benefits of open space and outdoor recreation—already embedded into our core work—echoed well beyond our own trail counters and into nature preserves and parks across the country. While you’ll read more about what we accomplished this fiscal year throughout this report, suffice it to say, it was an honor to be able to continue to serve you and to further our mission during previously unimaginable circumstances. We can’t thank you enough for your flexibility and kindness as we navigated these uncharted waters. Your encouragement, understanding and generous financial contributions motivated us in ways we can never adequately express. We feel more connected to you and to our volunteers, staff and trustees than ever before, and we’ll never take for granted the joy in sharing our mission with friends like you. Best regards,
4

Brandywine Heritage Society Founded in 1999, the Brandywine Heritage Society is dedicated to those very special individuals who have provided for the Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art in their estate plans or planned a future gift. Such gifts include bequests, charitable gift annuities, life income and lead trusts, gifts of life insurance and retirement accounts, and donations of a personal residence or farm with the retention of a life estate. Through their foresight and generosity, Brandywine Heritage Society members help ensure that vital works of art and irreplaceable land, water and historic resources will be preserved and shared with generations to come.
