Dear Friends,
The last fiscal year was a watershed moment in Brandywine’s history. After the tumultuous early days of the pandemic, we found our footing. Our Museum galleries and café were open with accommodations to keep visitors and staff safe; our preserves attracted record numbers of members; and our staff worked with landowners to permanently protect more land. We were succeeding beyond all measure with the “new normal.”
As the summer wound down, our staff looked forward to returning to their offices for the first time in nearly 18 months, anxious to collaborate in person with each other and to interact more with our members. Unfortunately, that return was delayed indefinitely as we grappled with historic flooding from Hurricane Ida in September 2021. That flooding—the highest ever recorded in Chadds Ford—devasted 10 buildings across our campus. It also dramatically changed plans for the phased implementation of a comprehensive Master Plan and caused the loss of significant earned income. The same storm inundated the Buck and Doe Runs in the Laurels Preserve, washing away newly planted trees, stream crossings, and culverts. Together, the damage totaled more than $10 million.
But, as you know, the Brandywine is nothing if not resilient. Once the water receded, our staff and volunteers rolled up their sleeves, put on their boots, and got to work. They cleared debris, saved critical documents, and cataloged losses down to the smallest detail. Ironically, the lessons we learned while working through the quarantine proved invaluable. Staff who lost offices were able to seamlessly work offsite, having already set up workspaces at home and honed their Zoom skills during the pandemic. Likewise, when the virus shut down the Museum in March 2020, we developed a dynamic roster of virtual programming; “Brandywine at Home” relaunched within days of the flood to keep our members engaged during the fourth Museum shutdown in two years. With grit and creativity, we concentrated early restoration efforts on the Museum and, as a result, were able to reopen to the public the day after Thanksgiving on November 26, 2021—just in time to share Brandywine’s special “holiday magic” with our members and friends.
From that time on, we adjusted to a newer “new normal” as we sought to make up for what we had lost. We moved popular Free First Sundays to the courtyard, atrium, and riverbank. Staff clocked countless extra hours fundraising for new systems and reimagining the now defunct Master Plan. And in a community-wide effort, we rebuilt the Museum’s extensive collection of holiday décor with critter donations from volunteers and neighbors. All the while, we continued to further our important mission—hosting high quality exhibitions, saving irreplaceable natural resources, and offering lectures and art-making classes with broad appeal.
4 FY 2022 BRANDYWINE CONSERVANCY & MUSEUM OF ART
Throughout the year, we celebrated some major mission successes. In June 2022, we marked the competition of our 500th easement, which brought us closer to reaching 70,000 acres of land that have been permanently protected by the Brandywine. Further, in a move that seemed almost prescient given the flood, we launched an initiative to help combat the impacts of climate change through our work with local municipalities. We also celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Museum by growing our permanent collection through purchases, gifts and planned gifts of art. Last, but certainly not least, we entered into a unique partnership that was touted in major media outlets, including The New York Times, in which the Brandywine took over stewardship of The Wyeth Foundation for American Art’s 7,000+ collection of works by Andrew Wyeth—including many thousands of works that have never previously shown in public. In short, our successes would have been remarkable in a normal year—that they came in the midst of our ongoing flood recovery made them all the more meaningful.
While we can’t say that any of this has been easy, it has been made better by knowing you’re in our corner. Please know how grateful we are for your unwavering support. We appreciate your generous contributions, your handwritten notes of thanks and encouragement, and your flexibility as we continue to further our important mission while we bring our campus back to full functionality and plan our next steps. Thank you for making all our work possible.
Best regards,
Cuyler Walker Virginia Logan Chair The Frolic Weymouth Board of Trustees Executive Director & C.E.O.

20 FY 2022 BRANDYWINE CONSERVANCY & MUSEUM OF ART
Brandywine Heritage Society
Founded in 1999, the Brandywine Heritage Society is dedicated to those very special individuals who have provided for the Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art in their estate plans or planned a future gift. Such gifts include bequests, charitable gift annuities, life income and lead trusts, gifts of life insurance and retirement accounts, and donations of a personal residence or farm with the retention of a life estate. Through their foresight and generosity, Brandywine Heritage Society members help ensure that vital works of art and irreplaceable land, water, and historic resources will be preserved and shared with generations to come.
