Railhouse Billiards is fast becoming the “hot new” place to play pool since opening in August 2008. Owners Colin and Peggy Macrury have worked hard since opening to make their pool hall appealing to the players.In a struggling economy it is a testament to their work ethic that Railhouse is becoming increasingly “the” place to shoot pool. The pool hall is bright and welcoming and boasting a non-smoking atmosphere only adds to the draw for die hard pool players as well as the couple or family looking for some competitive entertainment. There are a variety of table sizes for all levels of play from the Snooker player, to the “big” table player, to the “bar box” player and everything in between. Most of the pool tables have hourly rates: $4.50 for one player, $7.50 for two, $9.50 for 3 and $11 for 4 or more with two 7’ coin operated bar tables. Sure beats going to the movies! The Railhouse has great hours of operation, opening at 10 am on the weekdays and 11 am on the weekend you can play until the wee hours of the morning when they close at 2 am. They feature 12 beers on tap as well as a

variety of bottle brands. If you prefer they also serve pop and juices and a variety of standard pool hall fare like nachos, hot dogs, deli sandwiches

and more. League play goes on Mondays and Wednesdays and if you’re more of a tournament player, you can pick from tournaments on Tuesdays (9-Ball Open with handicaps), Thursdays (Open 9-Ball, heads up race to 7), Fridays (9-Ball for 75 and under players) or Saturdays (8-Ball heads up double elimination). Between leagues and weekly events the Railhouse offers the

pool players in the Modesto area lots of opportunities. Colin mentioned that he is working on setting up dates for the Spring tournament and also would like to plan several other larger tournaments during the rest of the year. Watch for their announcement in The Break. And in closing Colin and Peggy would like to thank all the leagues players for their support and all the players who turned out to support them when they first opened. While out for a walk the other day, a radio commercial came across my MP3 player that really caught my attention. In the commercial, golfing great Arnold Palmer was endorsing some particular product or service, and a statement he made brought some of the greatest advice I’ve ever received. What he said was; in today’s extremely competitive world, you have to do things that your competitors “can’t, won’t, or haven’t thought of.” Now that may not sound like much in the way of advice to you, but to me it was like getting a message from Heaven. Only minutes before hearing that commercial, I had been walking Roger Long along, pondering on what I could do to make myself and my business more competitive this year, when all of a sudden, here comes Arnie, giving me some advice that should have been common-sense knowledge all along. As some of you might know, I am involved in several different aspects of the billiard industry. I make my living (as meager as it might be) totally off of pool related services. I give lessons. I build cues. I do cue repairs. I even recover pool tables (but only when I have to). But the challenges I have to meet in trying to provide better services for my customers are probably of little or no interest to you, so let’s look at some of the ways Arnie’s advice can be applied to pool players. Be the best at one thing. This falls under the category of “can’t” do. Find a shot that you are particularly suited for, or otherwise attracted to, and perfect it. Make it your shot! For instance; let’s say you are rather tall and have long arms. This should make you particularly suited for breaking the balls well. Capitalize on that. Practice your breaking technique until you have it absolutely perfected. Become the very best in your area in that one shot. Or try this one. Become the best ambidextrous player in town. Crossing over to your off hand has many advantages, a couple of which include: reduction in use of the mechanical bridge, and a psychological advantage over your opponents. You want other players to be thinking, I can’t do that! Study your competition. This one comes under the category of “won’t” do. Go to the big tournaments and study the best players. Ask questions of them: How did they become so good? How long, and how often, did they practice? Were there particular practice drills they used? Did they take lessons from a qualified instructor? Are there any books or videos they would recommend? Many people are too proud, or too timid, to ask questions or seek help. They are afraid they will be perceived as being novices, or pests. They would rather glean a little from the sidelines, bit by bit, rather than boldly jumping out there and grabbing all that is available. You can’t get ahead of your competition if you are too proud or too timid. Be creative. And this one comes under the category of “haven’t thought of.” It’s the imaginative competitors that set standards that all others will eventually follow. Just look at the realm of possibilities that Michael Jordan brought to the game of basketball. Or that Wayne Gretzky brought to the game of hockey. Or even the ones that Mike Massey has brought to pool. How can you be creative, given your limited allotments of time and natural talent? Well, how about this for one: condition your mind and body to play pool at any given time of the day or night. If you’re an early riser, stay up late practicing or playing. If you’re a night owl, get up early in the morning and practice or play. Force yourself to do what does not come naturally. That’s being creative. By now you should be able to see the wisdom in Arnold Palmer’s statement. Everything we’ve talked about here today equates to one thing – work! And “work” is a word that all serious pool players hate. Work is the one thing that most players can’t do, won’t do, or haven’t thought of doing. So if you are willing to work, you can get ahead.

On Sunday, January 11th, twelve feet of history was disassembled and taken out of Rack ‘Em Billiards in Aurora, Colorado. The 100+ year old 12-foot snooker table was a staple in the back corner of the pool room for 15 years. It was the only 12-foot snooker table around and on occasion would find itself occupied with a classic game of golf. Sadly, the desire for snooker or golf has dwindled. On the day they were removing the table, Larry Samm Diep S. said, “I brought my friend all the way here just to show him this table and to play on it, but now it’s too late.” Unfortunately for Larry, they were already breaking it down. If you’ve ever been to Rack ‘Em, I’m sure you can recall memories of seeing or playing on the colossal table.

I was originally told that the table was built in 1891. While researching this story, I was later informed that it was from the 1870’s. That was when the American billiard games as we know them today were officially played on a table with six pockets. Rack ‘Em Billiard’s original owner, Rich, acquired the table when he opened the place in 1983. This 5-piece state table even came with extra long pool cues and bridges. In its place, we can now find two 9-foot Diamond tables. One of which is a nearly new Diamond Pro-Am. This is the same table that’s used at the US Open, Derby City Classic, and most other professional events. This table will also be used as the feature and finals table for all upcoming big table tournaments at Rack ‘Em. (Samm continued on page 25)

MALARKEYS VALENTINES DAY By Andrea Saenz Maes

The turnout was fantastic! 22 teams competed over Valentines Day weekend in the mixed scotch doubles 8 ball tournament at Malarkeys Pool and Brew! Pre-registration was not required, so my entry list was at 10 or 11 on friday night. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised when 11 other teams walked in the door Saturday morning to sign up and play! The tournament was a fun time for all. The mood of the event was very light, and at the same time very competitive. Thats an awesome combination for a great tournament! When the dust settled, the team of Eddie Mataya & Cindy Sliva played the point match against Molly Oliver & Crowe But. Eddie and Cindy played almost flawless, winning the point match and sending Molly and Crowe over to the “B” side point. Duane and Kim Hole lost their first round match and battled back all the way thru the B side to meet Molly and Crowe for 2nd and 3rd. Duane and Kim prevailed to meet up with Cindy and Eddie in the finals. Again, Eddie and Cindy played flawlessly, winning in one set,to be crowned the Champions of the first annual Valentines Day mixed scotch doubles tournament at Malarkeys!!!! WBCA Casino Tour

Little Creek Casino Resort in Shelton, Washington played host for the Western BCA’s kick-off to the Casino Tour on February 5th – 8th, 2009 with nearly 300 players competing in an Open 8 Ball Tournament. Bad Boys Billiard Productions headed by Ric Jones brought in 40 beautiful Diamond 7’ Smart Tables and Ric, along with his staff, did a great job of making sure everything was ready to go on Thursday morning when the Singles events were scheduled to get underway. Due to time constraints and the number of tables available to play on, this event had to limit the number of players in each division. Men’s Master division was capped at 32 players for this event, but the talent was still very high. The action got underway at 8:00 pm on Thursday night, and the first round saw great action right away. Eddie Mataya sent one of the pretournament favorites, Dan Louie, to the B side after their first round match. Eddie did not relish in his victory over Dan very long as he continued through the field with wins over Cedric Sloan, John Plunkett, Todd Marsh and finally JD Doherty to claim the hotseat and his spot in the finals. On Friday play continued and that evening saw one of the greatest exhibitions of 8 Ball the Northwest has ever seen. Dan Louie undaunted by his first round loss to Mataya showed everyone why he is considered one of the greatest players from this part of the country. He ended his match with Sam “Cocomo” Whitfield with four table runs, two off his break and two by dry breaks from his opponent. His next opponent was another top Northwest player, Todd Marsh. Dan won the flip in this alternate break, race to 7, format and continued his domination with a break and run in the first game. Marsh broke dry, and Louie ran out once again. This was a pattern that would continue through the entire match. Todd broke dry 3 times and Dan Louie ran out the set! Seven racks in a row! Added to the four he finished his prior to this match, these brought his total to 11 straight racks ending with a runout.

Lyle Redthunder. His opponent would be someone looking for revenge. That guy was Bill James. Bill began his tournament with wins over Shon Conn, Matt Person, Dave Shortt, and Robert Cummings before taking his first loss to Chritton. Bill then went to the B side and continued his path to a rematch with Chritton by defeating Dave Shortt again, Bret Baker, Scott Brasher, George Stefurak, and Lyle Redthunder. This being a true double elimination format meant that Bill would have to defeat Tony twice to win the tournament. The first set saw Bill play with determination as he defeated Tony 5-1 to force the second and deciding set. On this night Bill James would not be denied as he won the second set by and even more convincing 5-0 score. On the women’s side, only the Women’s Open garnered enough entries to have a tournament. Twenty women with cues in hand battled for the Women’s Open title and the $350 first prize. Suwanna Kroll made her way to the finals with wins over Heidi Hoffman, Arlene Delacruz, Evelyn Thornburg, Patty Conn, and Pam Carraway. Pam then had to go to the one loss side of the bracket to play Becky Rowell to try and earn a rematch with Kroll. In this tournament there would be no rematch in the finals as Becky Rowell defeated Pam Carraway leaving her to settle for a third place finish. The women’s final started about 11:30 pm and Becky knew she would need to be ready for the long haul as she had to defeat Suwanna twice if she was to be the women’s champion. The first set was a back and

was crowned Master’s Champion and received the $800 that went along with that title. Earlier in the evening the Men’s Open winner was crowned. Play began on Thursday morning with 128 players dreaming of making it to the finals on Friday night. Only two men would make that dream a reality. Tony Chritton found his way to the finals a smooth journey, as he plowed through the field undefeated. Tony scored wins over Henry Dawson, Dave Sharman, Rick Tillett, John Fleck, Bill James, Scott Brasher, and

forth battle with neither player able to put much distance between them and their opponent. In the end, Becky took the first set 5-3 and forced a second and deciding set. The second set was also very close as both of these women are tough competitors and neither has any quit in them. Finally, just before 4:00 am Suwanna defeated Becky in a thrilling hill-hill match. Also winding up on Friday evening was a second chance tournament for anyone who did not make the money in the men’s open. This tournament was limited to the first 32 players and was a race to 3, double elimination. The finals would pit Henry Dawson, sitting on the hot seat undefeated, against Jason Crapo who had to come from the one loss side. It was decided the finals would be a race to 5 and Jason would have to defeat Henry twice to win the tournament. Jason came out firing and won the first set 5-1 to force the second and deciding set. But in the second set, Henry Dawson came back with some fine shooting of his own and took the title with a 5-2 score. Friday morning saw the room filled with players as the team events got underway. Teams consisted of 3 players, of which one could be a master level player. Races were to 11, double elimination. The women’s division consisted of 11 teams. A.D.S. consisting of team members Andrea Saenz-Maes, Debbie Leland and Susan Gray found their team in the (WBCA continued on page 27)

Regional Tour Championships By Adrianne Beach

On February 21st and 22nd, the Northwest Woman’s Pool Association (NWPA) and The Parlor Billiards and Spirits hosted the 2009 WPBA Regional Tour Championships. Steve Olson owner of The Parlor added $6,000 to the prize fund to bring the total purse to $12,400. NWPA Tournament Directors Chris Rogers and Ford ran the event, and volunteers Marvin Holmes, John Te and Mike Shannon were on hand to help referee. There was live video streaming which received over 22,000 hits throughout the event with commentary provided by WPBA representatives Kristi Carter and Mike Howerton. In Ming Ng addition, Darran Bruce from ITV was there on Sunday to do interviews with Kristi, Steve Olson and some of the players. This event brought in 64 of the best amateur and semi-professional women from all over the United States and Canada. Nine regional tours were represented including Arizona Women’s Tour, Canadian Women’s Pool Tour, Jacoby Great Lakes Tour, J Pechaur New England Women’s Tour, Ladies Spirit Tour, New England Women’s Pool Tour, OB Cues Ladies 9 Ball Tour, Tiger Tour and the Northwest Women’s Pool Association Tour. The NWPA was fortunate to have seventeen women participate in the championships. Of those, five, Liz Cole, Cindy Sliva, Suzanne Smith, Mary Hopkin and Janie Reckard, were still in the tournament Sunday morning. 2008 NWPA Tour Champion Liz Cole and second place finisher Cindy Sliva were favored to finish high in the standings and did not disappoint. Liz after initially losing to Nicole Keeney battled through the B side of the bracket beating Candi Rego 7-4, Sara Miller 7-5 Samm Diep 7-2 Trinh Lu 7-5, and Suzanne Smith 7-5. Her second loss came from Holly Sholes to finish 9th/12th. Cindy first loss was to Diana Minor fought through the B-side beating Nicole Palescuk 7-5, Kathy Hernandez 7-1, Rachel Elizar 7-5, Naomi Fingerhut 7-2 and finally losing to Nicole Kenney 7-1 to place 13th/16th. Fellow NWPA member Suzanne Smith’s first lost was to Naomi Fingerhut 7-4 but beat Tina Hess 7-2. From there she came up against fellow NWPA players Jessica Orth, Andy Ruth, and Mary Hopkin to hand them their second loss. Suzanne’s final match was a loss to Liz Cole placing Suzanne 13th/16th with Cindy. Mary Hopkin and Janie Reckard made it to play on Sunday but both lost their first matches of the day placing 17th/24th. In the end, it was Ming Ng from the Tiger Tour taking 1st place, Nicole Keeney from the Arizona Women’s Billiard Tour taking 2nd place, and Bonnie Plowman from OB Cues Ladies 9-Ball Tour taking 3rd place. As a relatively new player, only three years, on the NWPA tour, it was very exciting to be involved in such a prestigious event. Not only did I get to photograph everyone indiscriminately and meet players from other tours, but I also got to see some fantastic pool and learn a few things along the way. I would like to thank the WPBA, The Parlor, Steve Olson, Kristi Carter, Mike Howerton, the NWPA and most definitely Chris Rogers and Ford for holding the Championships here in the Bellevue. It was definitely an enlightening and exciting experience.

14.1 National Championship CueSports International announces Comet Billiards of Parsippany, New Jersey will be the host location of the NCS 14.1 Continuous National Championship July 31 – August 2, 2009. Comet Billiards is a choice location for this event as the ownership has long supported the art of straight pool (14.1) and is the home of the Accu-Stats Arena. Feature matches and the finals of the 3 day NCS 14.1 event will be streamed live by the Accu-Stats team led by Hall of Fame recipient Pat Fleming. The field size at the event will be based on demand but not to exceed 64. In addition to cash and prizes the top two finishers of the national event at Comet will receive paid entry to the World 14.1 Championship August 25-30 at the Hilton in East Brunswick, New Jersey. To participate at the NCS 14.1 Continuous National Championship players must win a spot at qualifier tournaments scheduled around the country. If you diligently practiced the ideas in my last two columns, your banking game should be much improved. Here are two bank shots that can be offered as propositions or just used to work on your control of the angle of the object ball off a cushion. I first saw Shot A at a US Open where several of the top players were discussing it. The setup is Bob Jewett fairly simple: the cue ball goes on the spot and the object ball is placed exactly one ball off the cushion at the diamond. The goal is to bank the object ball cross-side. The problem is that if you don’t do something special, the shot will double kiss. The main decision for the shooter is whether the cue ball will cross the path of the object ball. Move the object ball one ball up or down the table and the choice of “cross or not cross?” is easy. Right by the diamond is a problem. Shot B is an answer to those skeptics who think side spin cannot be transferred from the cue ball to the object ball. The ball to be banked goes on the spot. A blocker ball goes on the short cushion exactly where the first ball would like to hit for a long bank back to the corner pocket. The blocker’s position is roughly as shown, but a few test shots should let you find the spot within a quarter-inch or so. Note where the ball is in relation to the diamond once you have the spot as you will probably have to respot the blocker several times. The challenge is to bank the object ball off the spot hitting to each side of the blocker. The cue ball must be placed straight in line with the shot for each try. Whether these shots can be made easily depends somewhat on the condition of the equipment. Changing from old, sticky cloth on the cushions to new, slippery cloth will change how any side spin on the ball grabs. New bed cloth will change how the banked ball arcs as it leaves the cushion due to any follow it may have. In the case of Shot B, the condition of the balls is important. I’ve seen newlypolished balls that were so sticky due to the kind of polish used that you could put up two blocker balls and still have margin to bank the object ball to either side. Shuff Golden at Inaugural NCS

By the third round at 4 pm, the field was whittled down to Austin Murphy, Jui Lung Chen and Brandon Shuff. Each player has an impressive resume and all are considered a force in their respective parts of the country and well known for their skills and determination. Chen has been rolling over players in Texas for years on the Fast Eddies Tour. 8-Ball National Championship

He has long been considered one of the players to beat on the Tiger Tour and in 2008 won the Maryland State One-Pocket Championship. Long, lanky and well over 6’2”, Austin Murphy and the word ‘prodigy’ have been used together. Murphy cashed in his first Reno Open in 2004 and at age 11 was the youngest player to win the 14 and under division of the Junior National Championship. In 2007 he placed 9th in the World Summit of Pool. Quite a list of accomplishments for any player; even more so when you consider that Walter Glass - photo courtesy of Melinda Bailey Murphy will turn 16 years old July 2009. Over the course of the three day event, hundreds of spectators enjoyed the talent displayed by the players. The finals pitted Shuff vs. Chen. It was evident that fatigue was beginning to set in. While there were moments of miscues and occasional missed shots, their talent none the less was evident. In front of 120+ spectators and thousands via the TAR live stream both players were determined to be the first to 13 games. After the two

and a half hour match it was Shuff who prevailed beating Chen 13-11. As the 2009 NCS 8-Ball National Champion, Shuff took home a total prize package valued at over $6800, including a new #408 cue by OB Cues, a custom engraved DELTA-13 Rack and a custom solid crystal trophy by Crown Trophy in Las Vegas, Nevada. In addition to the excellent play a complimentary drawing took place where two prizes were won by two lucky spectators. The 11th Annual Diamond Derby City Classic hosted by the Horseshoe Casino and Hotel in Elizabeth, Indiana January 23-31, 2009. Entrants in the DCC are required to play in all 3 events, Bank Pool, One Pocket and 9-Ball. The players acquire points based on how they finish in each event all vying for the coveted “Master of the Table” and the $25,000 bonus money that goes with the title. This is in addition to their prize money won in each event.

John Brumback walked away with the award this year and $20,000 first place prize money. The second place finisher Johnathan Pinegar only lost out to Brumback by half a point. Brumback’s 175.5 to Pinegar’s 175. Another unusual format of Derby City is that each player has the option to buy back into the tournament and each round is a blind draw.

This event is a double elimination with a buy back which is what Rudolfo Luat decided to do to face John Brumback in the finals of the Bank Pool Division. The competition was a short rack, race to 3 format. John Brumback, local Kentucky bank pool player was the hometown crowd favorite and he had to beat Rudolfo twice to capture the win. John was no stranger to the finals in the bank pool division and had finished in second place on two other occassions in 2004 and 2005. John won the first set 3-2 and the second 3-1 and captured the $10,000 first place prize money

FAT BOY 10-BALL CHALLENGE

Eric “Fat Boy” P e t e r s o n sponsored the first “Fat Boy 10Ball Challenge”, a race to 15, single elimination tournament open to the first 16 players who paid the $1,000 entry. The prize fund was rounded out to an even $20,000 by the addition of $4,000 by Peterson. The finals saw Lee Vann Corteza and Ralf Souquet face off. The match was all Vann Corteza and was broadcast live via the internet, starting at midnight, courtesy of Accu-Stats as a pay-perview event. This was one of many events offered by AccuStats who was there to record the action on PPV.

9-BALL

This was being played on the last day of the DCC and the play went back and forth between the two with Shane t on top. The final 8 players were in a single elimination competition had already used their “buy back” option. Shane caught a gear and nent he faced was another step closer to the final match. Lee was also ough the field to meet up with Shane in the race to 7 finals. It looked y win for Lee when he had a 5-3 lead but Shane fought back to reach . Missed opportunities by both players in the final match finished with aring the table after Lee gave him ball in hand. Shane took home the st place prize money.

The Derby City Classic is known for its late night action and this year was no exception. Shane Van Boening and Efren Reyes matched up for 10-Ball, race to 23, winner take all which was $20,000. Reyes was in the lead throughout most of the match but in the end it was Van Boening that pulled off the win 23-19. This match was streamed on the internet as a PPV.

A strong field of 333 players faced off in the One Pocket Division with John Schmidt playing the favorite Scott Frost in the finals. Schmidt went undefeated through this event and Frost had to beat Schmidt twice but couldn’t pull off the win.

Snow and ice storms plagued the Derby City Classic with delayed start times for matches and lost internet connectivity.

U S Bar Table Championships 10-Ball

Darren Appleton defeated Glenn Atwell in the finals of the 2009 United States Bar Table Championships at the Sands Regency Hotel and Casino in Reno, NV. 10-Ball was the first of 3 events in this week long championship. Glenn Atwell played well throughout the event and defeated more than his share of strong players along the way. He was faced with the daunting challenge of having to beat the current WPA World Ten Ball Champion Darren Appleton twice in order to claim the title. Darren played the same consistent solid game in the finals that won him the hot seat and after a deliberate match took the title and the first place check for $4100. Glenn Atwell took $2550 for second.

Coming off of his second place finish in the 10-Ball, Glenn Atwell once again faced Darren Appleton in the finals and come out the victor in the 9-Ball Division. Appleton was on the point and Atwell had to come through the one loss side to meet Darren in the finals and would have to defeat him twice to take home the win. Glenn won both sets and took home the $5000 first place prize money while Darren settled for $3000 and second. By the end of the week of the U S Bar Table Championships Glenn Atwell from southwest Washington the Portland, Oregon area found himself in all 3 finals. With this accomplishment put Glenn Atwell as the all around champion taking home an extra $2000. The finals of the 8-Ball goes to a seond set. Glenn won the first set 5-1. As I watched from my livingroom on the internet at theactionreport. com the feed was going down every 20 minutes or so but came back up within minutes. Stevie Moore would go for the run and kept getting out of shape and having to masse or kick at his object balls. Sometimes the table would be trying, the cue ball going too far at times leaving a more difficult shot. Glenn playing better than I’ve seen him play at Lincoln City or at Classic Billiards in Portland, OR. Thinking his shots through and playing smart. Glenn just ran out, now the score is 3-1 (Glenn). He comes up dry on the break Moore runs, 3-2. Glenn goes up 4-2, Stevie then runs to make it 4-3 and has a break and runs out 4-4. 8-Ball never comes easy, Glenn breaks dry, Stevie plays safe. Glenn studies the table. It’s a good thing there isn’t a clock. Atwell shoots a 1/2 jump and nothing drops. The table is open but needs a surgeon to cut through clusters. Moore takes his time after pocketing the one and runs out to win. Stevie Moore wins the 8-Ball Division of the 16th Annual U.S. Bar Table Championships and takes home $5400, Glenn adds another check for $3200 to his winnings.

On Saturday and Sunday, February 21-22, 2009, the American Legion during future tournaments. in Oak Harbor, WA, hosted its annual 4-Player Team, 8-Ball Tournament, On Friday evening, February 20, we held a $10 ìWarm-Up,î Raceawarding $4,890 in prize money. to-2, 8-Ball tournament, with 30 players participating. Women’s Warm Up Fanin Wins Straight Pool

Salem, OR - Saturday, February 21st Jake’s Bar & Grill hosted a Women’s winter warm up eight ball tournament. Scott McComas , the owner of Jake’s generously added 10$ per player for the event and Annie Gay was the tourney director. A total of 27 women showed for the event which was a race to 3 for open players and a race to 5 for master players. Eugene-Springfield had a very strong showing. A few ladies came from the Portland/Vancouver area as well as our local gals. The tournament started at nine in the morning, early for some, but not for these troopers. The women played well into the night and many who had been eliminated, played the blind draw scotch doubles evening tournament. 1st Tricia Tiption from Salem $200 2nd Phyllis Laderer from Eugene $150 3rd Cindy Garvin from McMinnville $100 4th Paule Heusinkveld $50 5/6 Eileen Madden and Kris Robbins both from Eugene/ Springfield $25 each. Late in the afternoon, we had a blast from the past in that two players from Eugene came in to watch the tourney, Sherry Schaeffer and Martha Hartsell. Although not currently playing, they still support this sport. Thank you ladies for your support and I can’t wait till we have another ladies tourney. Lastly, Rack ‘Em Billiards has also joined the world of live streaming. Live streaming has become the future of watching pool. Matches held on the feature Diamond Pro-Am table were streamed all day during the recent NCS qualifier. Viewers at home can go to: Ustream.tv and search “RACK EM BILLIARDS” to see the streaming or watch the pre-recorded matches. Sean Meade, owner of Rack ‘Em, plans to continue promoting pool with more big tournaments, leagues, and occasional pool clinics. “We’re very proud to be the first pool room in Colorado to offer live streaming. We plan to keep the camera up to stream future tournaments and matches. We look forward to holding more big competitions here soon,” said Sean. Tracy Fanin won the 1st-Sunday-of-the-month Straight Pool Tournament at Sam’s Billiards in Portland on February 1, beating Rick Schreiber from Jackson Hole, Wyoming, in a game with multiple lead changes, by a score of 50 to 46. Tracy made his way to the hot seat by beating Aubrey Robinson in the finals, and Sam Rabito, Jonathan Hahn, and Kevin Long in the preliminary heat. Rick beat Bill Bradford in the finals on a closing run of 21, and defeated Aubrey, Stephen Brees, and David Yuen in the preliminary heat. Only 12 players participated, which may have had something to do with Superbowl. The final results were as follows: 1st $60 Tracy Fanin 2nd $45 Rick Schreiber 3rd $30 Bill Bradford 4th $15 Aubrey Robinson High Run: 21 - Rick Schreiber The next 1st-Sunday Tournament is March 1. Players must arrive before 11 AM. The entry fee is $15.

BOZEMAN AREA CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Bozeman area men’s and women’s pool singles championships for 2008 were decided in two tournaments at the Molly Brown in Bozeman. Because the pool community in this area is so close-knit and enthusiastic (read rabid) we hold an area championship instead of each town holding their own. This area is defined as being from Gardiner and Livingston all the way to Three Forks and comes about from the fact that the Livingston to Three Forks area already plays in a common set of pool leagues out of Bozeman proper. The women’s tournament was held in December with Candice Evans prevailing over Amanda Bray in the finals. Final order of finish was: 1st Candice Evans $130 2nd Amanda Bray $80 3rd Missy Falkenstein $50 The men’s championship was delayed until January because of weather. The winner of the 26-man field was Montana’s best, Jeff Boucher, winning over Seth King. The order follows: 1st Jeff Boucher $300 2nd Seth King $200 3rd Britt Schwartzer $110 4th Jim Hansen $70 Many thanks to Allison at the Molly Brown, without whom we couldn’t have held these championships, and to Candice Evans who not only won the women’s but also ran the men’s and sold popcorn. Skinner and Crawford Qualify for Las Vegas On Saturday, January 31st, 2009 players from all over Colorado participated in a last chance CSI qualifier for The NCS National Championships Series to be held in Las Vegas next month. The 8-ball qualifying tournament was held at the Wynkoop Brewing Company in downtown Denver. After Jeff Crawford lost his first match he battled through the losers side eliminating players left and right. Jeff ended up finishing 3rd place and since Dino Devoe declined to go to Las Vegas third place runner-up Jeff accepted the invitation. Bill Skinner lost the hot-seat match to Dino 6-5 but then came back to double-dip Dino in the finals with wins of 5-0 & 5-1 and to be crowned the tournament champion and another Colorado representative at the CSI Nationals Championships. WPBA Touring Pro and house pro at the Wynkoop Melissa Little hosted this event and broadcasted live Internet matches throughout the day. Melissa plans for future live matches through her website HYPERLINK "http://www.melissalittle.com" www.melissalittle.com. Her prestigious and annual 15 Rack “Viper Challenge” will be aired live at the Wynkoop March 28-29, 2009. finals as they started with a bye, then stormed through the field with wins over 3 Amigas, NPL Chix and That’s How We Roll. Their opponent for the finals would be NPL Chix, consisting of team members Cindy Doty, Nikki Bisconer, and Shirley Morgan. NPL Chix defeated Hannah’s #3 and Hannah’s #1 before losing to ADS. They then went to the left side of the bracket and eliminated the Pinetree Girls, Janet’s Team and That’s How We Roll to earn a rematch with ADS. ADS made sure there would be no revenge or drama that was seen in other divisions as they took care of business winning the first set and taking the title. The Men’s Mixed teams also got underway on Friday morning with a full field of 64 teams ready to do battle. Soundview Bar & Grill consisting of players Ed Slade, Jim Conway and Loy Long played very sound 8 ball and went through the field unscathed to reach the hotseat. This was not a big surprise as these guys have done very well in every team event they have played in over the past year. Coming from the B side of the bracket would be the Bro’s consisting of Eddie Mataya, Bobby Campbell, and Tommy Silva. Eddie was looking to sweep the events in which he played, as he had earlier won the Masters Singles division. It was not in the cards though for Eddie and the Bro’s as they were defeated by Soundview and had to settle for second place in this event. A big thank you goes out to the Little Creek Casino Resort for hosting the first in the Western BCA Casino Tour, and for adding money to the prize fund. Also thank you to Ric and Bonnie Jones and their fine staff for setting everything up, running a top notch event and sticking around after all the players had headed home to tear everything down, pack it up and head to the next event. And finally, many thanks to the staff of the Western BCA who continue to work hard to build the organization and offer more and bigger events for us players to compete in. Stay tuned as more regional events like this one are being planned and there may be one coming to your part of the region as part of the Western BCA Casino Tour. Pro Events at Nationals World Pool Masters and International 10-Ball Championships Set to Rock the Riviera

The BCA Pool League is proud to announce the return of two of the most prestigious professional events to the Riviera Hotel and Casino May 2009. The 17th Party Poker.net World Pool Masters and the 9th Annual Predator 10-Ball Championship will be in the Royale Pavilion once again along side the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships. The World Pool Masters, one of the most revered invitational events with a limited field of 16 players is produced by Matchroom Sport and will take center stage first at the Royale Pavilion May 8-10. A large supplier of sports programming worldwide, Matchroom Sport also produces other well regarded events such as the Mosconi Cup and the World Cup of Pool in addition to Darts, Fishing, Pokes, Snooker, Boxing, Tenpin and Bowls. Equally exciting, the Predator 10-Ball Championship produced by Dragon Promotions will move into the pavilion May 11-16. The tournament boasts a roster of the top pool talent from across the globe.
