For example, if you tell yourself that you really can be the best player in the room your entire body will work in better synchrony, allowing you to casually walk in, warm up, and play your game. On the other hand, if you don’t feel like you have much game, your body will respond by being tight, and you might even give away your nervousness with shaky hands and twitchy body movements that are driven by anxiety. The way your body responds, however, is largely up to the way in which you program it (believe you can or you can’t, but the choice is up to you).

When I suggest to “walk the walk,” it really means for you to think through how you want to be perceived by the competition. When you appear to be confident, it often has the exact effect

Review your goals. Before you go to the pool room take a moment to read through your personal goals (yes, you should set some!), and try to focus on the things you want to achieve today. Be realistic. While you always want to strive to be the best, it is important to play within yourself and focus on the things that are more realistic to happen today. For one player that might be running a single rack, while another player may have realistic expectations of running through a tournament. One game at a time. Yes, this sounds cliché, but how many times have you allowed your thoughts to jump too far ahead and ended up missing an easy shot as a result? Believe it or not, staying in the moment and only focusing on the next shot is a very challenging skill for players to develop – but one very worthwhile to learn. Stick with routines. Your pre-game routine is vitally important toward your success! Learn about the significance of deep breathing, imagery, and positive selftalk to name a few, and develop your own re-game routine that allows you to play with comfort and confidence. Take a timeout. Sometimes when we feel the wheels falling off we simply keep playing, missing shot after shot and only becoming angrier with ourselves after every miss. Why do we do this when we play a game that allows for brief timeouts to re-gather our thoughts?? Sometimes it’s best to step back, breathe, and re-think the table so that you can regain your confidence and composure and still save the rack (and maybe the tournament).

Most of us don’t have the raw natural talent to become great players without working at it. If you’re good, you practice. If you want to be good, you practice. You won’t be getting better if you’re not practicing. And meanwhile, somebody else, who may beat you in the future, is putting in that practice time. If you actually want to get better, you’ll make time for practice. 15 minutes of concentrated practice will do more for your game than hours of play. “OK. I practice. I drill a few straight-ins, shoot a coupla spot shots, try a cross-side bank, and I’m ready to play,” you might say. I’d say this is all useful, but it’s not practice. It’s checking out the equipment and your stroke. Many players practice by throwing a few balls on the table and trying to run them out. Other times, they shoot low percentage shots. This is fun stuff. When you succeed, you look good and feel good. When you fail, well, it was a low percentage shot, what the hey? This type of practice is getting you nowhere. If you only practice what you’re already good at, you’ll look great, but your game will not improve. Practicing what’s easy is too easy. On the other hand, don’t spend your practice time on extremely difficult shots. You’re going to miss them and not know why. You won’t get better, and with all that missing, you won’t be building your confidence. Practicing failure is not a good idea. What types of things should you practice? Practice the things you do worst. This is obvious, but how many players actually do this? How else are you going to get better at them? Improving your worst things will raise your entire game. How about practicing that shot that cost you the match, that angle you always see wrong, shooting softly, shooting hard, getting

position when the object ball is hanging in the corner pocket, drawing more accurately, remembering to plan at least three balls ahead, checking where your tip is actually hitting the cueball (vs. what you believe), experimenting with controlling sidespin, jumping, curving, rail shots, kicks, banks, etc. There is enough to keep you engaged for a lifetime. So, there’s banging balls around the table, and then there’s practice. BCA Master Instructor Jerry Briesath says “Perfect practice makes perfect.” He means you get better not just because you practice, but because you practice the right things, in an effective way. I say “Practice makes permanent.” You have to “burn in” your improvements, or they will fade away. Often, the most effective way to practice is what’s called “progressive practice.” Billiard Digest columnist Bob Jewett promotes this method, and I’ve seen it yield wonderful results. Here’s how it works. Pick a shot or skill to work with. Let’s say it’s medium speed spot shots. The usual practice method – setting it up and having a whack at it 5 or 10 times – is not going to help much if you’re only making it 1 time out of 5. The trick to progressive practice is to start with the easiest possible version of the shot, instead of starting where you’re already having trouble. So, for our spot shot example, spot the object ball, and then move the cueball forward along the line to the object ball until it’s only a diamond or so away. Shoot the shot. If you make it, move the cueball back a diamond or a half diamond for the next try (making it progressively harder). Shoot 15 or 20 times. If you miss, move forward to the next easiest shot position. When you make it, make the next one a little tougher. This type of practice quickly shows you where your trouble begins, and keeps you working right near the edge of your current ability. Try it. Make progress.

PIN BALL POOL Here is one of my creations from a long time ago. Since there is a lot of action and ricocheting going on, this shot reminds me of a pin ball machine. It is not an easy shot but it should definitely be made within 5 tries. All four object balls must be pocketed.

Stefano Pelinga (born 1964) hails from Rome, Italy, where he has served since 1985 as a police officer for the Italian government (Polizia di Stato), until his retirement in 2011. He began to play pool at the age of 12, drawing inspiration from his favorite singer and actor, Dean Martin. Stefano, currently a 5-time World Champion in Pool Trick Shots, won several titles in Italy in straight pool and nine-ball throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. In 1990, he devoted himself entirely to “Artistic Pool,” commonly referred to in its practice as “Trick Shots.” Due to his outstanding achievements, Stefano is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest Trick Shot champions in the history of the sport, and has earned a spot in ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic Hall of Fame. Most importantly, on November 17, 2012, Stefano was inducted into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. In the presence of approximately 500 VIP guests and many sports stars such as Tommy Lasorda, Mike Piazza, Tony Esposito and Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Stefano was awarded this honor, becoming a member of this group of legendary Italian Americans.

Let’s start by setting up the first couple of object balls, the Black and the Brown one. The Black ball needs to be situated at one-ball + 2mm distance from the long rail, at the first diamond from pocket C. The Brown ball must be frozen to the Black ball at one-ball distance from the rail. As a result, their line of centers aims at the right point of pocket A, as shown in the diagram by the dotted brown line. Add the Red ball hanging by pocket C and the Blue ball by pocket D. Then place the Cue Ball at about 1.5 diamond distance from the Black ball and in a straight line with it. In this shot it is particularly important for all the balls to be very clean.

Let’s aim the left half of the Black ball and use a 4 o’clock, 1 tip of English, 2.5-speed stroke on the CB. By doing so, provided, as I said, the balls are fairly clean and therefore there is not much friction between them, the Brown ball should sink into pocket A, while the CB hits the long rail, bounces off of it, makes the Red ball F and travels towards the Blue ball to pocket it as well. In the meantime, the Black ball hits both long rails to end into pocket C, while avoiding colliding with the CB.

The only adjustment that may be necessary, in case the Brown ball hits the long rail and does not sink into pocket A, will be to place the Black ball closer to the long rail, using for both the Brown and the Black ball the same one-ball distance from it, in order to compensate for the excessive throw.

KISS SHOT DRILL

I recently took a lesson from the former European Champion Alex Lely. One of the drills he had the students do was a series of kiss shots. For some of them I was surprised by how easy they were if the balls were sitting right. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t propose that you make this drill a weekly practice but if you spend 15 minutes with it two or three times, I think your percentages will go way up and you will start seeing more kiss shots in games. The point is to get some feel for kiss shots before you have to play one in a match.

This kind of shot is very useful on a crowded table such as eight ball right after the break. Another good place to use it is when the ball you are kissing off of, such as the 4 in Shot 1 is part of a cluster. That kind of break-out is often overlooked. In Shot 1, put the 4 ball about a diamond out from the side. From where it is sitting, the 1 ball needs to hit the 4 nearly full to get the kiss angle into the pocket. Try it several times and move the 1 ball towards the 2 if you need to. You will have to shoot firmly to hard to keep the 1 ball from acquiring follow on the way to the 4 ball.

Next in Shot 1, try playing the 2 ball off the 4. You have cue ball in hand for the shot. With this intermediate angle, you can let the 2 ball roll into the 4 at much slower speed and that is the best way to play the shot. Have the 2 ball hit about half the 4. Finally, play the 3 off the 4 with a pretty thin hit. I think you will find this angle really tough. Shot 2 is similar, but the balls are farther from the side pocket. With the kiss ball (4) in the middle of the table, is any angle odds-on to go? After you have some experience with them, try each shot 5 times and note your success rate. Shot 3 is a less structured practice I like to play. With balls in random positions and cue ball in hand, find and play a kiss shot. Which shots do you see at that end of the table? The 5 off the 7 is similar to the 1 ball in the first set of shots. With the greater distance to the 7, you have to be more careful not to let the 5 ball acquire much forward roll before contact. The 5 off the 8 is similar but even a little harder. Shots like this are a lot easier if the cue ball is in hand or just happens to be in the ideal spot. Do you see any shot at all with the 2 ball? The kiss off the 5 with a softly rolling ball is nearly a

natural. I think off the 7 is impossible since it is about 90 degrees. Kissing off a ball to a side pocket or the other end of the table looks unlikely. The 6 ball has three easy shots. You can slow roll it off the 7, 2 or 8. This kind of slow roller with about a half-ball hit comes up all the time in the rack area and you have to be ready to see them. The main things to note when you are practicing kiss shots is which angles are total naturals for a slow roller, which require more care aiming, such as the very thin hits, and which require high speed to preserve the ideal kiss angle.

The guys over at Accu-Stats, have a huge amount of data from hundreds of thousands of games that were played in the 1980s. As of late 1987, top professional players operated with a Total Performance Average of .811 (meaning the were successful with whatever they attempted to do during a game around 81% of the time). They successfully kicked balls 79% of the time. They ran-out 56% of the time, and they pocketed roughly 90% of the shots they decided to shoot. Professionals also pocketed a ball on the break 51% of the time and got position on their next shot 93% of the time. Most amateurs could easily narrow the gap between themselves and professionals by: • Increasing their overall knowledge of the game. • Implementing better patterns when choosing to run-out • Knowing when and how to play safe • Developing a consistent pre-shot routine • Practicing their kick shots TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF THE GAME What are the more important technical aspects of the game? To increase your overall performance, you’ll need to become proficient in the following areas: 1. STROKE If you’re not making consistent contact with the spot on the cue ball you intend to strike, your fighting an uphill battle. In studies that have been done on the subject most amateur players do not hit the cue ball exactly where they intend to contact it. Most amateurs need to put their stroke in a groove. You can do this simply by getting a coke bottle and stroking your tip and ferrule in and out of the bottle repeatedly. If you can do this regularly without touching the side of the bottle you have developed a fairly accurate stroke. 2. AIM Being able to aim is just as important as striking the cue ball where you intended to hit it. If you can’t pick out the spot on the object ball that needs to be struck then you are going to have some serious work to do. Pick out an effective aiming system and learn it well. It will pay dividends quickly. 3. SPEED CONTROL Speed control is just as important as your stoke and aim. Without it you

IMPORTANT MENTAL ASPECTS OF THE GAME 1. POOL KNOWLEDGE When I give lessons to professionals, I have noticed over the years that their shot selection is always good. Most amateurs however, need a lot of work on their “KNOWLEDGE OF THE GAME” that is, picking the right shot to shoot. Most amateurs play the wrong patterns and tend to play safe at inopportune times. They are also ineffective kickers. Being able to choose the right shot doesn’t require any skill development, it’s just about gaining knowledge. You can gain that knowledge from watching lots of professional pool matches. 2. PROCESS What is that you need to focus on during your “preshot routine” to maximize your chances of success? Professional players won’t attempt a shot unless they are 100% committed to it. I can guarantee that! The first thing to do is look at your current angle and determine the speed and spin the shot needs to be hit with to get to the desired position area. From there it’s all about subconscious delivery. Implementing an effective pre-shot routine will also help you keep negative thoughts from entering your mind. 3. The Masters division had three separate events; a single elimination 10-ball, a double elimination Saratoga (an 8-ball & 10-ball hybrid game) and a single elimination 8-ball. Rodney Morris won the 10-ball event with early wins over Tyler Harmon, Roger Bordley, Seth Krafczik, before dispatching Shane Van Boening in the first semi-final match and finally taking out Denver, CO player, Adam King, in the championship. Adam beat BJ Spencer, Derald Salaz and Derrick Pacheco to earn a semi-final match up with Marc Vidal also of Denver. Adam won that match to earn a spot in the finals where he lost to the “Rocket.”

High Desert Shootout In the double elimination Saratoga event Shane VanBoening suffered a first round loss to Wyoming local, Tom Thompson, in the very first match called of this event! But Shane then refocused to win eight straight matches on his way to the Saratoga title match! His win streak included wins over Ken Tysver, Tournament Promoter - EJ Glode, Adam King, Mike Massey, Johnny Vasquez, Derrick Pacheco, Rodney Morris and Corey Deuel to earn a spot in the one match only extended race to 8 final against local Rawlins, WY player Ricardo Martinez. Ricardo was the “talk of the tournament” as the local product went on a winning spree that saw him take out Shawn Hallock, Chad Sholders, Mike Massey, Adam Sisneros and then a huge win over Corey Deuel (who just had a top 16 finish at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow just a few days earlier)! Ricardo and Shane faced off in the final on the live stream table where folks around the globe could log onto Lenny Marshall’s On the Rail TV to view it. The two traded games back and forth before Shane finally strung together a small win streak to win the gorgeous metal plague by a score of 8-5. Ricardo said later that he didn’t get near as nervous as he thought he might and that it was a “dream come true” match to play arguably the best player on the planet in the championship match of a tournament in front of his home crowd! Corey Deuel took the 3rd place spot and Rodney Morris finished in 4th place.

In the 32 player Sportsman Division, it was a 14-year-old youngster from Pavillion, WY, Tyrel Blowers, who put on a show and went undefeated all weekend against his adult counterparts to walk away with the division title! The pool world will be hearing plenty from this young phenom in the years to come - way to go, Ty! The runner up spot went to Aaron Pont of Saratoga, WY while 3rd place was taken by Maria Finley out of Denver, CO and the 4th place finisher was John “Johnny Mac” McClain from Wheatland, WY.

While the professionals and semi-pros worked their way through the three Masters events, there was a slew of amateurs from the area that cashed in as well! In the 64 player Expert Division, it was another local Rawlins player who got the lion's share of the money with Matt "the Assassinator" Sanchez taking top honors after holding off yet another Rawlins player, "Quiet" Kenny Wilson! Matt went undefeated in his preliminary bracket to make the final 16 redraw where he beat Chisolm Woodson, Mike Dudack, Dino Devost before beating Wilson in the hot seat match. Wilson, who also went unbeaten in the prelims, dispatched Troy Gonzales, Steve Pierson, and Jim Pierce in the final 16 bracket before losing the first time to Sanchez and then beat Jose Loma to earn a shot at the title. Loma took third place honors and Pierce finished at fourth.

If nothing else, the 2017 incarnation of the largest regional 9-Ball Tournament in the country will be remembered by those who were there as our first step into the future of tournament pool and, depending on who you talk to, it was either a good beginning with the occasional misstep or an epic fail or somewhere in-between. We have now ventured forth into the FargoRate era. FargoRate is a statistical system that gathers data and dispassionately rates players in hopes of making tournament

9-Ball A Championships play competitive for all. Numbers don’t lie nor are they capable of bias. They are what they are. Sounds good on paper, doesn’t it? Let’s call this Point 1 in the great FargoRate debate. Lincoln City, Oregon and Chinook Winds Casino Resort again welcomed players from Oregon, Idaho and Washington to the coast for the week of October 9-15, 2017. A total of 845 players entered, three more than a year ago. There were 13 divisions to choose from,

one more than last year with the addition of the Women’s Senior Singles Division. Some divisions were up, others were down. This was directly the result of FargoRate’s impact on how players were rated. Many players who, over the years, were moved up solely on how high they finished in any given division rather than on their actual level of play, were moved back down, presumably into their proper division. Point 2. BadBoys Billiards Production again brought and expertly set up 80 7’ Diamond tables.

They would also provide the bracketing and tournament direction. Chinook Winds staff put the rest of the room together. Vendors arrived and got set up. Lenny Marshall of OnTheRailTV came to stream and record as many matches as time permitted. Only thing missing – the players. And come they did - to catch up with old friends and make some new ones, to enjoy one of the most beautiful areas on the west coast and TO PLAY POOL. The doors officially opened Sunday afternoon and

the players started dribbling in. Sunday evening was Fun Night and there was something for everyone. From just socializing and getting in some table time to getting a first taste of competition, the room filled and we were off and running. Mini got underway around 6pm and the ever popular Handicapped 10-Ball Singles followed at 7p. Randy Baker held off Rachel Keller to take 1st place/$200. Rachel got $120 for 2nd place. Ray Bray and Gary Crane also cashed in 3rd/4th place with $60 each.

Master Scotch Doubles Open Scotch Doubles

As always, Master and Open Mixed Scotch Doubles were first on the agenda, both starting at 9am on Monday morning. The Master Mixed Scotch Doubles had 26 pairs (down from 38 a year ago) on the hunt for the 1st place prize of $1890. Carissa Biggs/Steve Lingelbach (NPL) marched through the winner side of the bracket (race to 5) before running into the juggernaut that was Stan Tourangeau/Andrena Browne (LTD/EV) in the hot seat match. It was a very close match, with Carissa/Steve coming out on top and in the final. Meanwhile, on the back side (race to 4), Kim Jones/Marvin Holmes (LTD) dashed the hopes of Cindy Doty/Mike Stevens (NPL) for another title (4-2). Kim/Marvin then ended their day in 4th place/$550 as Andrea Saenz-Maes/Ken Morano (LTD) advanced to the back side semi against Andrena/Stan. Andrea/Ken were no match for them (3rd place/$830) as they were shut out 4-0. The rematch between Carissa/Steve and Andrena/Stan was on. Andrena/Stan got off to a good start, breaking and running to get game one. Carissa/ Steve battled hard but not hard enough and Andrena/ Stan shut them down 5-3 and the possible double dip was on. In the 2nd set, now a race to 4, were warmed up and ready to rock. The match went hill-hill before Stan made an uncharacteristic error in the decider, hooking her on the 4-Ball and forcing her to attempt an unsuccessful jump shot and leaving Carissa/Steve with an open table and that was it. Andrena/Stan got $1250 for their 2nd place showing and Carissa/Steve returned to the winner’s circle.

The Open Mixed Scotch Doubles had 103 entrants (up slightly from last year’s 100), a 1st place prize of $1810 and a race to 4 on the front and 3 on the back format. Two pairs, Pam Gabbard/ Francisco Silva (YAK) and Coryn Walker/Charlie Burnett (NPL) were undefeated until the hot seat match. Coryn/Charlie showed them no mercy, sending Pam/ Francisco to the backside 4-0 to wait and see who’d they have to knock off to get a rematch. Irene Arsenault/Ed Terry (NPL) came through but could not deter Pam/Francisco, ending in 3rd place/$990 and giving Pam/ Francisco their rematch. The final was well played by both pairs but Coryn/Charlie were a little bit more determined. Coryn/Charlie started with a break and run and ended with a break and run. Pam/Francisco, pushing Coryn/Charlie to hillhill, were denied access to the table in game 8. Match over. Still, not a bad day for them, finishing in 2nd place/$1340.

There were 8 Singles Divisions. First up, with a Tuesday 6pm start time, was the Men’s B Singles, the largest division with 176 players (way up from last year’s 144), a 1st place prize of $1140 waiting at the end of the rainbow and a grueling race to 6 all the way. Once again, the two who met in the hot seat match would again meet in the final. Tony Bloom (EV) edged out Wally Johnson Jr. (NPL) 6-4 for a spot in the final. Wally, who sent Vic Albertson (NPL) on the winner’s side 6-3 had to do it again in the backside semi. This time it was Wally 6-2 and he went on to the final and Vic went home in 3rd place/$605. Wally (2nd place/$830) fought hard but Tony was just too much for him, taking the match 6-3.

A third division, the Men’s A Singles, also got on the tables at 9am on Wednesday. This division, traditionally the second largest, had 138 entries (down from 152 a year ago), a race to 7 format with $1300 awaiting the winner. Once again, the final would be a repeat of the hot seat match. Joe Landi (LTD) and David Lash (NPL) played through to the hot seat match unbeaten. Joe man-handled David 7-3 on his way to the final. David could only wait to see who would join him in the backside semi. Eric Soumokil got there and no further, finishing in 3rd place/$720 as David earned his seat in the final. Sadly, David (2nd place/$975), he fared no better in the final, losing to Joe as he cruised to the winner’s circle with some very impressive play.

The Men’s Senior Singles began play at 9am Wednesday morning with 29 seasoned veterans (slightly up from 27). Because anyone 60+ years of age, regardless of FargoRate number, was allowed to play, it was decided that the senior divisions would be handicapped via FairMatch. That meant that if you had a high enough FargoRate Number, you would have to give a player with a much lower number up to four games (this happened in only one match in which the race was 7 vs 3 and ended at 7-0) but two games were otherwise as severe a spot as it got. Not so bad in what was supposed to be a maximum possible race to 6. (For the men, the women were an entirely different story, more on that later.) The men’s Fargo numbers ranged from 425- 616. Often the lower ranked player, with the handicap, won. The player with the 616 didn’t cash but the next one down, with 595 won. Go figure.

Sanford Jr. (LTD). Mike won that one 5-4 and would wait who would come through from the backside. By the backside semi, it was down to Mike’s aforementioned victims, Kenny would have to oust Richard to get to the final, giving Richard one game. Kenny was up to the task, winning that match 5-2 and sending Richard off in 3rd place/$265. In the final, Kenny would have to beat Mike twice and had to spot him two games. The first set was almost all Kenny as he closed it out with a break and run and final score of 6-2. The second set had a similar result, ending at Men’s A Champion Kenny Dodd 6-1. Mike couldn’t stop the double dip Mike Gwinn (TC) made his way through to the point match undefeated, easily in but had a great tournament, finishing in his first three rounds (all 5-1 wins in even matches). Then things got a bit more 2nd place/$390 and a very tough Kenny difficult. Mike sent Kenny Dodd (CC) back, winning his 4 games before Kenny Dodd was the Champ ($575). got to 6. The point match, a straight up race to 5, was next against Richard

Enter the women, as the Women’s A Singles got underway noon on Wednesday and with it a controversy took root regarding entry screening which will be resolved after the event and should result in better procedures being put in place to prevent a repeat. 51 Ladies (up from 47 last year) were entered. $700 awaited the winner in this race to 5 affair. Kathy Stanley (LTD) and Trish White (NPL) went through to the point match undefeated to play for the final. Kathy won this match 5-3. Schon Hartung (SWI) had to win 4 matches to get to the backside semi, where Trish waited for her one match to get another

In spite of 4 dry breaks, Schon took the first set 5-3. The second set was tighter than the first and with the opposite result. Kathy barely deflected the double dip, winning by a score of 5-4. Schon settled for 2nd place/$480 and Kathy is the new Women’s A Champion. The Women’s B Singles also started at noon on Wednesday with a field of 69 (10 more than in 2016)

playing a race to 5 format on a quest for the $640 first place prize. Kari Stevens (NPL) and Doreen Butler (NPL) met in the hot seat match, with Doreen winning 5-4. Would Kari get a rematch? Yes, she would but she would have to play Karin Moroz (WWA) again to do it. Kari, who sent Karin to the backside, beating her 5-4 just prior to the hot seat match, would again edge her by the same 5-4 score and leave Karin in 3rd place/$305. Kari’s rematch with Doreen was on, but Doreen was too much for Kari (2nd place/$445), winning the match 5-3 and accepting the crown. Good job, Ladies!

Last to begin on Wednesday was the Women’s Senior Singles with 9 entries and a $260 first place winner’s cut for the winner. Easy-peasy you might think, small bracket, short races, matches spaced out. Enter FairMatch and this became the toughest division in the entire event populated by the players least able to enter into an endurance contest. Because of the wide disparity in Fargo numbers, more than half of the matches were as extreme as 8/3 and 7/3, with at least one of these ladies playing 3 matches back to back. Enough said. Point 3.

So, who survived? Robbin Iredale (MTV), fresh off two energy sapping 8/3 and 7/3 matches, and Marian Squeochs (NPL) met in the hot seat match and played heads up in a race to 5. Robbin prevailed, winning 5-2 and earned a full day off to await the second finalist. Marian waited to see who would come through the backside to meet her in the semi. Wendy Taff (WWA) worked her way to the semi and ended Marian’s tournament (3rd/$55) in a race to 7/3 match by a score of 3-5 and she proceeded to the final on Friday morning. Again, Robbin had to win 7 games to Wendy’s 3. Wendy took off like a shot, taking the first set 3-0. Could she pull off the double dip? The second set with Robbin taking the first 4 games before Wendy could get on the board (4-1). The ladies traded the next 2 games (5-2) and Wendy was on her hill. No mistakes now for Robbin (1st place/$260) and she bore down and closed out the match 7-2, leaving Wendy in 2nd place/$135.

That left only the GrandMaster/Master division to get going, which both the men and women did on Thursday at 9am. The Women’s GM/Master Singles hit the tables with 21 entries (dramatically down from 37 the year before) and on a quest for the $800 first place prize. This was a race to 6 format and these ladies took it very seriously. Newcomer Mary Ellen Homenchuk (LTD) breezed through the winner’s side easily, never losing more than 2 games along the way, including her 5-1 match with favorite Kim Jones (LTD). Kim waited to see who would emerge to block her rematch and redemption. After losing her second match, Tricia Tipton (CC) clawed her way back, taking our some very tough opponents, to get to the backside semi against Kim. Kim was too much for Tricia (3rd place/$280), taking her down 6-3 on her way to the final. Kim (2nd place/$475) put up a much better fight against Mary Ellen in the final, taking off to a 4-0 lead. Mary Ellen answered back with 4 games of her own and tied up the match at 4-4. The ladies traded the next two games (5-5). With so much pressure, the decider was less than stellar as nerves kicked in with the two missing easy shots and making uncharacteristic mistakes. Kim (2nd place/$475) gave it her all but just couldn’t pull it out, missing a makeable 8-Ball and Mary Ellen (1st place/$800) closed the match out. Last but by no means least, was the Men’s GrandMaster/Master Singles, also a Thursday, 9am start. There were 42 of Western BCA’s finest players on hand

Men’s GM/Master Singles Champion Stan Tourangeau

(down from 65 last year at this time) and all in the hunt for the $1300 payoff at the end. Odds on favorite, Stan Tourangeau’s (LTD) road to the hot seat was not an easy one. He had to take out some very strong players along the way, Steve Tune 7-4, Mike Stevens 7-4, David Bersenadze 7-4, John JD Doherty 7-3 and finally Randy Baker for the point, winning that one 7-5. Young phenom, Chris Byers, took a longer route to the final, losing his second match and grinding through to the backside semi against Randy Baker (3rd place/$570) and quickly winning that match 7-2. The final was an interesting contrast in styles with Stan being the controlled breaker and Chris the power breaker. It was a good one. Stan got off to a quick 4-0 lead including three breaks and runs and a run out following Chris’s dry break. Not looking good for Chris. Chris pulled it together and took the next two games after Stan fouled on the break in game 5, setting Chris up to run out and then his own break and run in game 6 to get the score to 2-4. Stan won game 7 with another break and run and game 8 with a good safety which left Chris with a jump shot, subsequent foul and Stan running out. All of a sudden Stan was on the hill. Looking grim for Chris. But Chris was not ready to roll over just yet. He got game 9 following Stan’s dry break and his long 1-9 combo. 6-3. Game 10 was a grinder with Stan missing the 4-Ball trying to get shape on a tough 5 and leaving Chris the run out. 6-4. Stan had the break in game 11 and ran out and it was all over. Chris more than earned his 2nd place/$855 finish and Stan (1st place/$1300) again showed us why is our best.

The Men’s B Teams had 61 teams (way up from 44 last year), all with hopes of taking home the 1st place prize of $1800. LTD’s Oh No You Didn’t (Josh Moraga, Ed Ambo, Dennis Keeler) made it undefeated to the finals knocking off LTD’s Grease Monkey Billiard (Al Miller, Jordan Henricsen, Stan Burklund) 11-9 in the point match. Would Grease Monkey Billiard get by INL’s Rogue 9 (Jeremy Coffman, Mungo Becker, Robert Vining) to get to the final? Yes, they would 11-10. Would Grease Monkey Billiard force a 2nd set and possible double dip? Yes, they would 11-9. Would Grease Monkey Billiard complete the double dip and send Oh No You Didn’t home? The Men’s Open Teams started with 81 teams (down from 109 a year ago), all playing for the 1st place prize of $3210. Unfortunately, a Champion was crowned even though the final was never played. This should not take away from the fine effort the 1st place team, NPL’s Malarkeys (Eddie Mataya, David Lash, Tommy Sliva) made to get through to the final unbeaten. What happened (still under investigation) is unfortunate. Adjustments to the final standings in this division have been made and it is hoped that, with improvements to entry and team registration procedures implemented before the next event, this will never happen again. When the dust settled, Malarkeys was 1st/$3210, LTD’s Good Fellas (Joe Landi, Jacob Dosch, Stan Tourangeau) was 2nd/$2280 and LTD’s Shark Bait (Wayne Hansen, Kevin Robitaille, Jora Sandhu) was 3rd/$1620.

While all the drama and effort that is regular tournament play was going on, those who didn’t have a great tournament experience had the opportunity to play on and possibly make some money before heading home. 11 of the 13 divisions had 2nd Chance Tournament. Make way for team play. Friday saw the room fill up and all the Team Divisions starting at 4:30pm. The Women’s Teams Division fielded 46 teams (down from 52 a year ago). The ladies race to 9, all after the 1st place prize of $1755. NPL Chix (Cindy Doty, Kristin Cambas, Trish White) reached the hot seat unscathed and had to wait to see if their opponent in the hot seat match, COB’s Skoden (Karla BagleyTias, Kendra Marcoulier, Deece Suppah, Windy Manuelito) could get the rematch or if another team was more determined to get into the final. Turned out, Skoden couldn’t and LTD’s Keeping Up with the Joneses (Kim Jones, Lisa Foster, Angela Verhoeven) did. Skoden finished in 3rd place/$915 and the Joneses move into the final. NPL Chix were having nothing to do with any double dipping. Keeping Up with the Joneses (2nd place/$1275) could only get 5 games before NPL Chix got the required 9. Kim and Lisa won two games each for the Joneses. Cindy Doty was the force behind NPL Chix’s Championship drive, winning 5 games. Congrats to NPL Chix! We hope everyone had a great time in Lincoln City, left with good memories and are looking forward to March, 2018. And finally, we must thank all those who make these events possible. Many are behind the scenes, working long and hard before the next event starts. They do it for love of the game and the unwavering belief that Western BCA is the best amateur pool association in the world and that all the work and time involved to put on these great events is worth it. Janette Hillman has been a bartender at Q’s billiards for more years than any of us can remember. She has taken care of our fellow pool players for every season since the beginning of Billiards of Idaho, knowing most of us by name (and drink). When her son was in a serious motorcycle accident, we took the opportunity to take care of her.

A group of BOI volunteers gathered donations, posted fliers and spread the word about a blind draw scotch doubles tournament with all proceeds benefitting Dakota and Janette Hillman. We ended up with a great showing of players, some of whom had travelled a long way to play. Between the donation to play - entry fees, silent auction, raffle tickets and the Pick Your Partner auction, we managed to raise over $1200 in one fun filled afternoon! The Future of the Chinook Winds Open As of now there will be no more Chinook Winds Open pool tournaments. This was an agreement reached between Chinook Winds Casino Resort and Western BCA. While we will miss this tournament, we did get to see some of the top players in the world play in a great location and in a great format. Not often do we get to see world class players in the Pacific Northwest. We got to watch players like Shane Van Boening, Warren Kiamco, Dennis Orcollo, Carlo Biado, Skyler Woodward, Rodney Morris and Corey Deuel battled it out in 8-Ball and 10-Ball. We also got to watch top women players like Vivian Villarreal, Chezka Centeno and Allison Fisher. While this tournament was a great draw for pool players it was not a great draw for Chinook Winds and they decided to withdraw their sponsorship of the event. We would like to thank Chinook Winds for being such a great sponsor for the 3 years we had the CWO. Chinook Winds will continue to be the primary sponsor of Western BCA Regional Championships. Revelina Um, Room Owner Tim Murphy, Khanh Ngo The West Coast Women’s Tour (TWCWT) completed Stop #5 of their 2017 season on the weekend of October 21-22, 2017 at Diamond Billiards in Modesto, CA. This is owner Tim Costa’s fourth year of sponsorship with TWCWT, and player participation continues to grow every year. We had 29 players compete, including two players new to the tour. The top half of the bracket showed the strength of two locals: Cassandra Ortega (6) defeated Rhianna Price (6), Janna Sue Nelson (7), and newcomer Frances Tso (6) to make the top eight on the winners’ side. She commented, “I’ve never done this before. I’m so happy just to make it to day two!” Facing Cassandra on the winner’s side would be Katie Murphy (7), who beat Darnell Domingo (6), Leslie Murphy (6), and Sara Thomas (6).

The one-loss side was a battle for Kendra Fuller (6), who lost her first match against Janna Sue Nelson (7) and would have to defeat Rhianna Price (6), Mary Dughi (6), Martha Zanetis (6), and Sara Thomas (6) to make it to Sunday’s top eight. Kendra has been making several top 8 appearances this 2017 season! Facing her would be Frances Tso (6), who, in her first tour appearance, would make the top eight by having a bye, defeating Cony Mendoza (6), losing to Cassandra Ortega (6) and winning against Gigi Callejas (6).

According to Tournament Director, Monte Thayer, this tournament and the Wyoming Open continue to grow each year to the point that this coming year’s Wyoming Open will now move to a four day event and will take place on April 5-8, 2018 in Saratoga, WY. These tournaments are a great way for pool players across the country to come together and have a great time hanging out and competing with some of the sport’s greatest players and just having a good time with the sport of billiards in addition to competing for significant tournament and calcutta prize money. Once again, promoter, EJ Glode, was able to keep the sport of pool rolling as the man behind the scenes that not only brings this kind of talent to the Rocky Mountain region for everyone to enjoy but to also have this kind of money ($10,000 added) for players to compete for!
