Long tall Vinny Mellott definitely brought his “A” game to the elegantly appointed upstairs room at Sam’s Billiards in Portland, Oregon, emerging undefeated and smiling from the grueling series of Round Robin matches to take home the first-place prize plus bonus bucks for high run of the day. He caught us all off guard, knowing as we did, that he had been spending every spare minute with his brand-

new puppy(!!) instead of logging practice hours on the table. Steve Pulido scored a very respectable second place finish, losing only to Vinny in a close one right down to the wire. Having been on dominating teams with each of these exemplary players, I can tell you that they both bring a solid game with them every time they walk in the door! And a big shout-out thank you to Valerie, our favorite ‘hostess with the mostest’, who is responsible for Sam’s

continuing to be the nicest oasis on the love map of pool I have ever found in six decades of shooting. Upcoming Open 14.1 Tournaments will be held on the 1st Sunday of October, November, and January. “Earthshaker” Baker Shimmies Out a Win at Sam’s

the victory. Lingelbach seemed to be determined not to let anyone else collect on that bounty as he made his own way through the backside to face Bob Zack for a chance at the finals. This day, Steve would have his way in the short, race to 3 backside format, defeating Bob 3-1 and moving on to face Randy in this true double elimination event. Steve was able to sneak by Randy in the first set after being down, but Randy refused to be denied and closed out the win 4-2 earning himself a $20 bonus, in addition to the $245 first place. Kenny Dodd pocketed the $25 bonus for the top open player out of the money after a playoff with Rufel Ulep. Anthony Abisado and Steve Pulido were the other open players in the money. Randy Baker’s ticket was drawn for the break and run challenge with $81 on the line, but he scratched on the break.

September 24, 2017 – 25 players came out to compete in the $500 added monthly 10-ball tournament at Sam’s Billiards in Portland, Oregon. A bounty was placed on Steve Lingelbach since he had won the previous 2 tournaments; anyone who beat him would receive their entry fee back as a bonus! Anthony Abisado, who goes by Jay, claimed the first bounty with a decisive 4-1 victory sending Lingelbach to the backside. In the same position on the front side, Randy Baker sent another tournament favorite, Paul Marquez, to the backside, while Steve Pulido dispatched the talented, young, Chris Byers with his own resolute win of 4-1. Bob Zack, returning to the scene after a 1-tourney break, cruised smoothly to the hot seat match where he faced Randy Baker. In a hill-hill thriller, Randy Baker wowed the crowd and came away with

3rd Annual Viking Cues Ladies 8-Ball Regionals

August 22-23, 2017 were the dates for the largest women’s pool tournament in Southern Oregon. Viking Cues was the title sponsor for this championship. They donated a gorgeous cue worth $625, and $900 was raised in ticket sales. Rack ‘Em Billiards in Medford, OR was the location and provided the ladies with the best equipment (7 newly recovered Diamond bar boxes), the best food, and the best hospitality to be found. Owner Dave Smith graciously added $500 to the tournament, provided some gorgeous crystal trophies for 1st and 2nd places, and loaded a coffee card at the nearby Starbucks, so that all the ladies could go over and enjoy some java or a Frappuccino during the tournament. Tournament coordinator, Linda Carter, asked the pros, who again donated some awesome door prizes. Robin Dodson gave us Jump Shot videos, Ewa Laurance, Keith McCready, LoreeJon Hasson, Allison Fisher, Mary Kenniston, Darren Appleton, Paul Potier, and Emily Duddy sent autographed photos. Florian Kohler contributed his Venom 2 DVD, his signed photo, and some Pool Dawg accessories and stickers. John Schmidt gifted us with an autographed photo and contributed $20. Mary Kenniston also sent a book. Tim Miller, aka The Monk, contributed books. We also gave away 2 hotel stays for 3-days and 2 nights, lots of Harry and David Moose Munch and truffles, doggy T-shirts, Predator pool glove, Magic Rack, Viking chalk, stickers and patches, and a professional mineral makeup consultation at the New Well. Thank you to all for your generosity! Altogether, we had $1400 added, with a $2200 pot, and we gave $200 to the Consolation tournament on Sunday. Tournament Directors Paul Kinney and Roy Johnson kept the tournament running smoothly, and Ken Smith was our official referee. Many thanks to them, and Holly West, along with Dave for serving everyone with a smile, and keeping the players happy. Roland Daniel was our official photographer that took the photos all weekend, including our group photo. We also brought in Jennifer Vaughn, LMT for free massages for the ladies. After a player’s meeting and the draw, play commenced in ernest around

12:30pm with 25 women vying for 8 paying spots. The races went to 5 on both sides, with BCAPL rules, lag for break, alternate breaks, and rack your own. Stephanie’s run for the gold started out with a bye, then 5-0 scores over both Mandy Smith and Annie Driver, then added another win against Patty LaMontagne, 5-3. Playing for the hot seat against Linda Carter ended with Linda being on the hill first, but a costly cue ball foul by Linda opened the door for Stephanie to run out and win the point. Shawn’s path to the finals began with a win over Kim Harmon, 5-3, then an early loss to Kris Robbins, 3-5. Tearing it up on the B side, Shawn won against Susan Leger 5-1, Lori Wetzel 5-2, Nicole Donisi 5-2, Stephanie Karpins 5-1, and Kris Robbins 5-0. Taking the match from Linda Carter was a little tougher, as Linda was again, on the hill first. But guts, determination, and some skillful runouts prevailed, and Shawn closed out the next 2 games to go to the Finals. Local competitors Linda Carter took 3rd for $400, and Kris Robbins finished 4th, nabbing $276. In 5/6 and $122 each were Patty LaMontagne from Grants Pass, OR and Raquel Walton of Portland. Rounding out the payouts, were Stephanie Karpins and Sara Bettencourt, both locals, and cashing in at $50. Of note, is that this was Sara’s very first big tournament and she lost her first match. This woman has heart and a bright future ahead! All entrants got at least one door prize, and on Sunday at 3 pm, we drew for the Viking Cue raffle. A very happy Tim Kohler won the cue. It seems everyone had a super time and wants to come back for our next tournament. It was a fun tourney with lots of great ladies participating and new friendships formed. Rodney Morris Can’t Be Beat at September Nubbins

The September version of the Andy Cloth Nubbins Memorial Monthly Pool Tournament at Duke’s Bar & Grill in Saratoga, WY was held on September 2223, 2017. There was a special guest player this month in the form of BCA Hall of Famer, Rodney “The Rocket” Morris, who was in town for the upcoming Andy Cloth High Desert Shootout! Rodney had to play as a Masters+ player and had to spot everyone an extra game above and beyond the normal Masters players and he agreed to start in the loser’s bracket! In addition to Rodney, Wyoming was represented with several players from Rawlins, Saratoga, Cheyenne, Casper, Wheatland and Laramie along with two players who made the trip from Colorado. These players battled it out for the Saratoga (an 8-ball/10-ball hybrid game) title. The eventual champion, Rodney Morris from California, (go figure?! lol) had to win 9 matches in a row to win the title and he did just that as he put on a six-hour exhibition that left the field and crowd in awe!! Tournament runner up honors went to Ryan Henry of Westminster, CO who shot strong all weekend and won four straight matches over Monte Thayer, Johnny Cisneros, Matt Sanchez and Lance Orner to get the hot seat and only lost to the “Rocket” on the weekend and, in the first match of the finals, he lost a hill-hill match! Congrats, “Rino!” Lance Orner of Cheyenne, WY had a strong showing during the weekend and finished up in the 3rd place spot only losing to Henry and Morris along the way. Johnny Cisneros, also of Cheyenne, WY, was a definite factor in the tournament as always and took 4th place over the two-day tournament. These tournaments continue each month with $1,000 added to each tournament and only a $30 entry fee which is paid back to the players 100%. The fact that there are no green fees or quarters required and $49 per night motel rooms this

The Psychology of Pool OVERCOMING CHOKING! DR. “Choking” is when you know how to do something and have successfully have done it before, yet in pressure situations you fail because of a lack of focus and execution. In the game of pool choking is a common occurrence, especially during tournaments when it seems as though the table gets longer and the pockets become smaller. This month I would like to share with you why choking occurs, and what you can do to minimize choking the next time you play when the stakes are high! Choking always begins with fear. Interestingly, for human beings fear can be real (i.e. somebody shooting a gun at you), or irrational (worrying about what somebody might think if I miss this next shot). Regardless of the source (real or irrational), our bodies respond with anxiety in the same exact way. In other words, your body doesn’t care if it hears gun shots or is afraid of your opponent standing over the pool table – the physical anxiety (i.e. increased heart rate; tense, tight muscles; and shallow breathing are examples) will be experienced the same exact way!

Once fear kicks into negative anxiety, your mind will begin to exclusively focus on the physical symptoms of nerves (the shallow breathing, increased heart rate, etc) instead of thinking about the shot you need to make on the table in front of you! From there, most players will start talking to themselves and say things like “don’t screw up,” or “don’t miss this next shot.” Guess what happens next? You got it – the shot is missed! Once your self-talk becomes negative and conservative, you are basically done (Don’t believe me? Try NOT thinking of as pink elephant and see what happens. Now go tell yourself NOT to miss

the next shot and see what happens). Once the shot is missed, the player usually experiences more negative energy, more fear, more anxiety, and in some cases the day may end up being lost completely. It’s amazing all this starts from fear – and irrational fear at that! Think about it – there is no real fear when playing pool, yet how many thousands and thousands of players allow their minds and bodies to experience fear as though they were in fear for their life?! Seriously, who cares about who you are playing or how many people are watching – they cant take the stick out of your hands and make you miss shots! If you want to minimize choking, try the following tips: • When you start getting nervous while playing, where is the fear coming from? Are you worried what somebody will think if you miss? Are you concerned who is watching you shoot? If you are feeling any of these kinds of things STOP immediately, stand up, take a few deep breaths and remind yourself you are experiencing irrational fear! • Breathing through your stomach is the best way to immediately calm your body down. Try taking 2-3 deep belly breaths and watch how your body responds – its pretty amazing. • Self-talk (what you say to yourself) is also a great way to refocus and remain calm in tough situations. Tell yourself words like “focus” or “stay cool” and your mind and body will respond accordingly. • Once you conquer fear, confidence will take over – leading you to synchrony between your mind and body, experiencing “the zone” more frequently, and positive self-talk (and more wins, too!).

Back in the early 60’s, when I began playing pool, there wasn’t much help available. Mosconi had a little book out, and that was about it. Just like today, there were lots of great players around, but the unspoken attitude of that time was, “I ain’t tellin’ nobody nuthin’.” Many players felt that if they taught you their “secrets” you’d use that knowledge to take their money. Others felt that, since they had to work hard and had to make all the mistakes, if you didn’t earn your knowledge, you didn’t deserve it. You were supposed to learn by losing money to better players. Sharks and fish. Predator and prey. I’m happy to announce that those days are mostly gone. Today, we have good instructional books and videos, training and practice aids, and instructors and schools. Of course, they’re not all good. Like everything, some are good, some are extraordinary, and some are just plain wrong. But it’s possible now to get great help. Some players are blessed with terrific natural ability. They got good very quickly, and never understood what the problem with everyone else was. They saw angles; they saw ball paths; they clearly remembered shots they had seen before. They could take you through a shot by shot replay of a match they played two years ago. Not everyone is wired up this way. Sure, these players still had to go on and do the work—sink those million balls—to really pull themselves up to their personal potential. There is no escaping doing the work. Nobody just walks up and plays great from day one. But somehow, it came easier for them. This is the story of most pros. Unfortunately, for the vast majority of us it’s not that natural. It doesn’t come that easily. It’s not that obvious to us. We’re not full-time players, and we’re frustrated because, lately, we’re not getting better. We need an edge. The edge is available in several dimensions: superior fundamentals, clearer, better knowledge, more effective practice, engaged exposure to higher level play. We have only so much time and energy to devote to pool, and if we really want to get better, we’d better plan on devoting some of that time and energy to things that will improve our game. So what can we do? Read and watch good material. Be very picky about what you choose to believe from the materials you read and videos you watch.

Great players are not necessarily great teachers. In fact, many great players have beliefs about what they’re doing that are completely wrong from a physics perspective. They can get whatever results they want on the table, but their belief about how they are doing it may not be true. Place your faith in the science types for why things work the way they do, and in the great players for how to play smart and how to win. But be skeptical. Practice the right things in the right way. Set aside small amounts of time to work on the worst parts of your game, and do it with all the focus you can bring to bear. Start with an easy version of what you’re working on and gradually make it more challenging, as you improve. Don’t practice failure. Make good use of training aids. Seeing yourself on video is usually a very surprising experience. Most players immediately see things that could be improved. Try working with a practice cue ball, and try to believe what it shows you. Work through drills that look promising. Find a good instructor. There is no substitute for hands-on help and guidance. Ask around. Instructors with advanced certifications usually have a lot of teaching experience, and they would not have gotten all that experience if they weren’t helping players get better. Good instructors have curriculums that take you through a planned series of learning and practicing in an organized way. If someone just wants to watch you hit some balls and then show you how they would have done it, you’re probably in the wrong place. Ask some questions and see whether their answers make sense to you. If you find a good instructor, it will be the best money you’ll ever spend on your game. Spending $600 on yet another new cue is not going to raise your game. Spending $600 on serious, proven instruction will make more difference than you can imagine—for the rest of your pool life! Engage your brain. Actively try to predict and understand what happens at the table. Watch the best players you can find. Think about why they make the choices they make, and how and why their shot-to- shot results are what they are. There is way more to this game than people think. THE PASSING CAROM SHOT STEFANO PELINGA stefanopelinga.com

Stefano Pelinga (born 1964) hails from Rome, Italy, where he has served since 1985 as a police officer for the Italian government (Polizia di Stato), until his retirement in 2011. He began to play pool at the age of 12, drawing inspiration from his favorite singer and actor, Dean Martin. Stefano, currently a 5-time World Champion in Pool Trick Shots, won several titles in Italy in straight pool and nine-ball throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. In 1990, he devoted himself entirely to “Artistic Pool,” commonly referred to in its practice as “Trick Shots.” Due to his outstanding achievements, Stefano is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest Trick Shot champions in the history of the sport, and has earned a spot in ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic Hall of Fame. Most importantly, on November 17, 2012, Stefano was inducted into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. In the presence of approximately 500 VIP guests and many sports stars such as Tommy Lasorda, Mike Piazza, Tony Esposito and Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Stefano was awarded this honor, becoming a member of this group of legendary Italian Americans.

This month’s shot is another very useful one to know as the principle it is based on may help you win any pool game. Let’s suppose we have the 9-ball hanging in front of side pocket B. Our CB is by pocket D, at about one ball distance from the long rail and half ball from the pocket’s right point (the blue-dotted line). The lowest numbered Object Ball (the Red ball in the diagram) is situated in front of the CB, at about one ball + 1” from the long rail at the first diamond. We could try to slice the OB to the right and shoot a combo on the 9-Ball, but I can guarantee you that it would be easier and would give us a better chance of success to slice the OB to the left but, at the same time, use a lot of draw on the CB: use a smooth follow through, a 6-o’clock, 2.5 tips of English and a 2-speed stroke. The CB, after cutting the OB thin, will hit the rail and curve as a result of the backward spin. It will then proceed towards the 9-Ball and precede the OB, likely pocketing the 9-Ball before the latter can interfere with the shot. During trick shot competitions, it is indeed mandatory to pocket both the 9-Ball and the OB in the same side pocket. F Remember to not shoot too hard in order to give the time to the CB’s spin to grab. What a cute shot!

Nine ball is sometimes criticized for being nothing but a “connect the dots” exercise, but many common situations require good pattern work and reward precise position play. Let’s find some easiest ways to run out. In the diagram your opponent has just scratched on the break so you have ball in hand. What is your first concern? Try to work through the rack before reading on and then see if our analyses match up. The first two balls are obvious. The 1 ball can go to A, B or C with a stop shot and you will have an easy shot on the 2 ball. This is your first chance to go wrong, or thinking more positively, make the run easy. The transition from the 3 to the 4 is not automatic. If you don’t move far enough from the 2 and leave yourself a cut to the right on the 3 ball, you need a hero shot to get on the 4 ball. If you go to far and leave a big cut to the left on the 3, it will be hard to hold the cue ball for the 4. This means that you should really work for ideal position on the 2 ball, not just an easy shot. The arrows show about the optimum angle for the 2 shot to move over to the three with a confidentspeed stun shot with a little draw. What’s the best way to get to that line? Make a choice before reading on. Playing the 1 ball to either pocket A or B is not unreasonable. A requires a few inches of controlled draw, while going to B is more or less the same stun shot you plan to play on the 2 ball. How about the follow shot to pocket C instead? Follow shots generally allow the best control of position, and if you choose the right cut angle for the 1 ball -- very slightly to the right -- you will have good shape on the 2 for a wide range of speeds. The shot to B would be my second choice because when the cue ball hits the 1 ball, it is already nearly on the desired position line. The shot to A has a problem with the stretch if you try to draw straight back and if you over draw it a little, you’ll be on the wrong side of the 2 and looking at long position or a long shot. What angle do you want on the 4 from the 3 ball? If your plan is to go to X to play the 5 in the corner, a 30-degree cut is about what you need. That would be roughly on a line from the 2. With a nearly full shot on the 3 just stun over to that line being careful to get past the 6. If you end up with more angle on the 3 to the point where trying to kill the cue ball is risky, go to the cushion and come out. If you make a mistake on the 3 and leave yourself straight on the 4, the bank on the 5 is as easy as banks get and position on the 6 is automatic. If you do get to the 6 the main thing to remember is to leave yourself enough angle on the 7 to get up the table for the 8. The most common mistake is to get nearly straight and the best way to recover is

usually to play the 8 to pocket A. Here is some additional analysis you can do on this diagram to get you thinking about patterns at nine ball. If you can remove all but one ball before the 9 ball before taking ball in hand, which one ball do you leave up? I hope you said the 7 ball. You can continue this line of thought for 2, 3, 4... balls. Which three balls (in order) do you like? 2-4-7 should be automatic and about the same as 3-4-7, but 1-2-8 is not bad. Remember that all the other balls are off the table. When you are in a match, you can do a similar analysis while your opponent is shooting. How should he run the balls? Where does he have to play precise position? Thinking while sitting lets you get in more practice.

If you’ve had butterflies while shooting the 9-ball, you’ve experienced performance anxiety! If you’ve had trouble going to sleep before an important match, you understand how it can control you. If you’ve ever started panicking during your warm-up strokes because you are afraid you will miss, you understand how it can seriously effect your match play. If you’ve ever rattled the 9-ball you’ve felt it’s daunting effects. But what exactly is performance anxiety and why does it exist? This article is going to take a look into the origin of anxiety, what the effects are, and how you can harness it’s energy it to help you play your best pool. What is anxiety? Generally speaking, anxiety is a reaction to some sort of stressor. If you don’t know the mental game techniques to control it, that emotional response can quickly cause: your heart to race, a loss of focus, fast breathing, tension in the muscles and sweating. As humans, we’ve developed responses to anxiety that have become engrained in us for over a million years. We evolved to to protect ourselves when something is threatening our lives. But, for some bizarre reason, that same response can be triggered today in a game of pool and can be quite challenging to deal with. And for most of us, it creates an even bigger challenge in a game that is already extremely difficult! What do you fear most in pool? It’s probably at least one of the following: • Losing to a weaker player (you’ve invested a lot of time into your practice, so you want to win when you should). • How others preceive your performance – (i.e. you have a big ego ) • Fear of failure (failing to meet your goals) • Fear of winning (self-sabotage puts you back in your comfort zone) What does anxiety do to you? • Anxiety can cause your hands to shake • Your game speeds up and so does your pre-shot routine • You make quick deceisive decisions instead of weighing all of your options carefully (shot selection) • You put the “death grip” on your cue The positive side of anxiety It turns out that there’s a “healthy side” to anxiety, one that drives us to win and become better players. A top pool player’s fear of failure is probably quite different than that of an amateur. Fear of failure to professional players doesn’t represent a loss

of respect from their peers or what people will think of them. This anxiety is a healthy fear. It motivates them. If anxiety is controlled using proper stress management techniques, it can become a very powerful driver to success. Professional pool players want to win. They want to win major championships and see their names and photos in major publications. This is not because they derive their self-esteem from it, but because they are competitors and love the thrill of competition. If you can direct the physiological changes that occur during stress in a positive way, you will gain the ingredients for an extraordinary performance. Your perspective of the “stress” is that it’s a positive challenge, not a negative threat. Your senses are heightened and can be used to take your performance to an even higher level. For the world’s best players, pre-competition anxiety is almost a necessity for them to play their best game. Gaining control of your fears (getting to the root of the problem) To get control of your anxiety, you need to ask yourself some key questions: What do you fear? Why do you fear it? Most of us don’t really know why we are nervous. What is it you want out of pool? What motivates you to succeed? Do you gain your satisfaction from what other people think of you as a player? Is your success tied to your self-esteem, your status in the game and impressing others? If so, this is an unhealthy fear and you’re too emotionally involved in the game to reach your full potential. Ways to conquer performance anxiety in pool • What is the worst case scenario? There are far worse things that could happen to you in life than not playing well. • Look at failure as an opportunity to grow. • Figure out the unknowns, so there is less to fear. • Accept that it’s natural to feel anxious – it’s part of getting better. • Visualization – Imagine yourself in the situations you fear and visualize yourself succeeding. • Set short term goals and work on achieving them. Small incremental achievements might help you improve without creating too much pressure. Franklin D. Roosevelt once said: “We have nothing to fear but fear itself.” No truer words were ever spoken. His advice can help you in difficult times. Learning to experience your primary emotions without resistance can help you weather all sorts of emotional storms that can occur during match play. The key is welcome anxiety into your game and use all of that added energy to your advantage.

In other matches, we saw the Davis Brothers giving it a run, but one at a time Preacher Ronn sent them on their way. At least you guys didn’t have to play each other. One of our new players, Bob O’Hashi sent Preacher Ronn to the One-Loss side in a hill/ hill match advancing to the Hot-Seat where he went hill/hill with Dave Bersenadze. It was a fun match to watch, but eventually Dave went on to capture the Hot-Seat, and Bob waited to see who he’d have to play to get a second chance at Dave. As it turns out the One-Loss side whittled down to Bob O’Hashi and Preacher Ronn. Bob was thinking about his chance to go back and play Dave, but Preacher Ronn was thinking about revenge for getting sent to the One-Loss side. Hill/ hill again, this time with a different result, sorry Bob. Ronn prevailed and went back to meet Dave for the finals. Someone said something about splitting it, and someone said something about flipping a coin. Both players were pretty tuckered out, since they were running on four hours sleep having played each other the night before. So that was it… agreement! We’ll split the pot and flip to see who is the Champion. Go figure, Dave win’s his first coin toss in two months. Wow!

September’s One Pocket proved to be another day of fun and friendly competition at the Golden Fleece in Seattle, Washington. We saw three new players in the field and that’s good for One Pocket. The clock is ticking on everyone’s chances to qualify for the $1000 added, which looks like it will probably be about $1500 added. We now have nine players qualified, and $790 in the prize fund.

The field was short so players elected to play the first round a race to three. Racing to three is a great way to get your money’s worth and gives you a good idea of your true play. A couple of our players had their best ever results and that was exciting to see. Carl Oswald had a chance to get into the hot seat match, but couldn’t quite close the gap and Dave Bersenadze sent him to the One-Loss side.

Congrats to everyone that played including Bob O’Hashi for his 3rd place finish, Preacher Ronn taking second, splitting the prize with Dave. And finally, Dave Bersenadze our First-Place Champion and newly qualified $1000 added participant. Next month’s tournament will be October 21, come on out we have a few spots left.

Lingelbach Wins Again 26 players converged for the last Sunday of the month, $500 added, 10-ball tournament at Sam’s Billiards on August 27, 2017 in Portland, Oregon. Ben Merton made his way to the hot seat after defeating Mike Grimm in the winner’s bracket semifinals. Merton found Steve Lingelbach waiting for him after he had bested Pete Gates in the other semifinal winner’s side. Steve jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, but Ben fought back to tie the match at 2. The balls in both the 5th and 6th racks ended up jumbled, allowing Steve to execute a strategy to try for 3 consecutive fouls which succeeded in both games. Ben faced Pete Gates on the backside, however his misfortune continued and Pete dispatched Ben 3-0. Pete earned his rematch against Steve, but Steve seemed to have got himself on some type of a roll and has not lost a match in the past 2 tournaments. Maybe we should put a bounty on Steve?! If you want to help with that decision, come to the next tournament on September 24th! There is now a total of $57 in the break and run pot. The West Coast Women’s Tour completed stop #4 on September 16-17, 2017 at The Broken Rack in Emeryville, CA. The centralized location of this pool hall allows players from all over the Bay Area to attend and enjoy a full weekend of competition, camaraderie, and delicious food. TWCWT considers The Broken Rack as one of our very valued stops, as owners Wayne and Marilyn Boucher, are avid supporters of the sport of billiards. Marilyn had a strong presence as an active member of TWCWT’s committee during its up-and-coming years. The Rack holds weekly 8-Ball BCA leagues and tournaments in 9-Ball, darts, and foosball and has been at their new location since May 2014. They have 20 pool tables, a full kitchen and a full bar. There was a total of 35 players, with 9 players joining for the first time. It was great to see Eleanor Callado back in the tour. She had just competed in the North American Pool Tour (NAPT) professional event, taking second place behind top 5 ranked player Karen Corr. For our first bracket, we had a new addition to the tour, Vivian Corona (6) receiving a bye and winning against Olga Azarova (7) and Ginger Bowen (6).

This was for sure a personal achievement for Janna. She won this match 7-3. Khanh Ngo vs. Aileen Nguyen Congrats to Aileen Nguyen for making top 8 on her first event. The sole survivor of all the matches on the one loss side was Khanh Ngo, who would wait for the loser of the hot seat match.

She then played the sole survivor of the one loss side, Khanh Ngo. She lost her first match against Bonnie Ogg and kept racking up wins to take herself all the way to the finals!

Diablo Valley Pool League Wraps Up Winter Sessions l-r: Joe P., Frank T., Ed K., & Gary S. - Open Mixed League Champions The Diablo Valley Pool League successfully ended their winter session last June 13, 2017. After 23 weeks of competition and fun we had the opportunity to crown a new champion. Frank Triolo’s team from Farrington’s bar won the league with a total number of 90.5 round points. This team has been knocking at the winning door for a few sessions. Last session they were short 3 rounds behind Jason’s William’s mix who would end up winning it all. Frank has a lineup of top shooters on his roster. Ed king who also took 2nd on the top shooters list, Gary Stevens 4rth on top shooter list, and Joe Prislac completed this mix who took over first place early on the season and won enough rounds to finalize on top. In fact, they showed up the last position round with no worries of rounds. Second place would go to a regular of top placings on DVPL leagues. Former champion Jason Williams’s and his strong mix from Vinnie’s Bar ended with 81 round points. Congratulations to Frankie and his group, they have been part of the leagues for many years and we are delighted that they were finally able to take first

place. A new team to “make some waves” last season was Anthony’s Parish team from Bar None. They also have a very strong mix with a combination of upcoming and veteran players. They played well and managed to hold onto third place on a close race to the end with some of the more veteran teams. Another new team Jaguars led by Jared Williams and Ryan Logsdon also had a good showing by taking 5th place. We had 22 teams participating and total payout at the end of the session was of $23,315. As usual all teams were paid. Special thanks to our room sponsors who year after year allow us to play out of their bars. Piona Family DVPL and the Piona Family gathered this August 26, 2017 at Vinnie’s Bar in the City of Concord to celebrate the 11th year of celebrating Dave Piona’s life. After introductions, a few of Dave’s close friends shared stories and memories of moments with him. Extended family joined in the celebration later on. Everyone enjoyed a short video of Dave’s Life and listened to some of his favorite music. Tina and Cony Mendoza team tagged this tournament again. With a field of 53, players, they race to 2 on both sides. The 3 tables at Vinnies had just been re-felted by Jeff Health who, year after year, comes from Reno just to get tables up to par for this

event, which has now become a tradition and draws some of the best players from all over. We had players from Portland, Las Vegas, Modesto, San Francisco and, of course, Concord locals. Vinnie’s Bar offered their delicious $5 barbecue and opened their doors to all participants. After a 10-hour marathon of non-stop top-quality billiards, the former winners Gary French and Jason Williams would engage on a battle for the top prize. Gary sent Jason to the one loss side where he worked the looser side to win the spot to come back to challenge Gary French for the number one spot. Jason played extremely well on the first race and quickly won the first two games. As a true double elimination event, there would be one more race. Gary was on his way to run a rack and at this point, making a single mistake would be enough to lose that match. Jason won this race too, and finished in 1st for the 11th Dave Piona Celebration.
