In the open division, former Poison Lone Star Tour Champion and APA National Champion, Ernesto Bayaua, ran through Richard Hernandez, Laredo’s Gerardo Alvarez, J.C. Torres, 7-3, and Felipe Yniguez, 7-2, while Joey Torres tagged Steve Williams, Denis Strickland, 7-2, Steve Lenz, 7-5, and Brian Rosenbaum, 7-1. As the winners’ side final four took shape, one loss side action was underway. Earning their way into the money rounds, Elias Garza ousted King, and Reece bested Lenz, 5-3. Hsu took out Rosenbaum, 5-3, and Dale Briones eliminated Yniguez, 5-1. Back on the east side, J. Torres fell to Bayaua, and Poon ousted Hogan, by the same score, 7-3. Starting Lineat Foundation FundRaiser Backward Billiards in Okeechobee, Florida
Article and Photos By: Janis Sessions
Christie and Earle Strickland, the owners of Backward Billiards in Okeechobee, Florida gladly open their doors at 10am to hold this charity tournament for the Starting Line Foundation. Mario Posada III, ask me over a year ago to run this event once he landed the pool room and sponsors. When he called me, and said he was ready, we locked down the date, which was April 14, 2018, I was all in. Starting Line Foundation helps the homeless, youth, widows and people who are really in need. We had 33 players come out to play. Entry fee was $60, double elimination; 8-Ball BCA rules. There was a $2,000 payback guaranteed to the top 8 players. We also gave each player one raffle ticket and other tickets they could buy for the various items that were raffled off. One of the items was a cue ball that Mario and I had Allison Fisher sign, when we just happened to be at another event a week before this one. Thank you, Allison, for doing this. All items were raffled off and a big thank you to all the players for taking part in the pool tournament and raffle. All funds raised from this went back to the foundation, which I believe was over $400. Want to thank The Strickland’s for having the event in their pool room. The staff was excellent, friendly and lots of fun. The room was a great place to play pool. Many Thanks to all Sponsors for adding their funds as well as to *Brayden Rucks, who gave his winnings to the foundation. What a special young man.

Van Corteza & Osipov Champs at Predator ProAm Stop #6
Pro Winners - Lee Vann Corteza (1st) and Jorge Rodriguez (2nd) On April 7-8, 2018, Steinway Billiards in Astoria, NY hosted the Predator ProAm Tour Stop #6 that featured both pro and amateur events. 16 pros entered the $250 added Pro event. Lee Vann Corteza was undefeated through the front side, with a rare shut out against Jorge Rodriguez in the hot seat match. On the loss side, Jorge sent Hunter Lombardo home 7-1 and was into the final. Lee Van Corteza was, again, too much for Jorge, allowing him only one game as he captured the win. The $750 added Amateur event fielded 83 and was won by Alex Osipov, who had to work his way through 3 matches on the loss side to get into the final where he dispatched hot seat occupant Abel Barriento. A 2nd Chance tournament drew 14 with Max Watanabe downing Erick Carrasco in a hill-hill final to get the win.

The Psychology of Pool Let Go of Bad Days if You Want to Play Your Best
DR. CHRIS STANKOVICH Dr. Chris Stankovich, known as “The Sports Doc,” is a national expert in the field of sport & performance psychology and has been featured on ESPN for his work with elite athletes. His #1 best selling pool video “Mind of Steel: Mental Toughness for Pool Success” has been used by thousands of players to improve focus, increase confidence, and eliminate anxiety. You can learn more about Dr. Stankovich and Mind of Steel by visiting drstankovich.com
We have all had those days where nothing seems to go right, almost as if a dark cloud is following us around. Pool players know exactly what I am talking about here – those days where the shots just don’t seem to fall, and every time you miss you set your opponent up for an easy run. The funny thing is that no matter how hard you try to avoid bad days, it’s impossible to do so – the bigger question is how do you respond to bad days so that you can quickly get back to being the player you know you really are. Get messy and don’t try to be perfect People who call themselves perfectionists (a nice title, but not very practical) actually set themselves up for a lot of life anxiety. Think about it – if perfection is the only thing you’ll tolerate, you are going to go through most days very frustrated. Great athletes, including pool players, aren’t afraid to get messy by playing all-out and making the best of each day, even the bad days. What this means is that on some days you will know early on that it just isn’t your day, and that’s OK. Rather than get mad and upset, decide if there is still something you can salvage, or if there is a drill or two you can work on even though your complete game just isn’t working.
MIND OF STEEL MENTAL TOUGHNESS FOR POOL SUCCESS
Eliminate nerves & anxiety, beat pressure, and DOMINATE THE COMPETITION!!
Laugh and learn Humor is another way to quickly diffuse
negative energy and help you relax. Granted, it’s tough to see the humor in missing a key shot in a championship match, and I wouldn’t expect you to fall into a rolling laughter at that very moment. But try and keep perspective – assuming you have your health and people in your life that care about you, I would say you have it pretty good. Try to remind yourself that pool is just a game and certainly not the defining characteristic of who you are as a person, rather than looking at it the other way around. Have a laugh once in awhile, and simply admit “it just wasn’t my day.” Why let go? Think about it this way, every bad moment and day you hold on to equals every great moment you are potentially missing. To make my point, when you are still mad about the last shot and it prevents you from making the next shot, you have only compounded your problem by not letting go. Is it easy to let go of things? Hell no it isn’t, but it is do-able. Letting go and moving on is what separates good players from average, and great players from good. More importantly, letting go of negativity is something that is 100% under your control, so make a wise choice if you want to see your game take off to the next level.
I would like to hear from you. If you have a question for me please submit to: information@drstankovich.com

Tom Simpson
Back in the early 60’s, when I began playing pool, there wasn’t much help available. Mosconi had a little book out, and that was about it. Just like today, there were lots of great players around, but the unspoken attitude of that time was “I ain’t tellin’ nobody nuthin’.” Many players felt that if they taught you their “secrets” you’d use that knowledge to take their money. Others felt that, since they had to work hard and had to make all the mistakes, if you didn’t “earn” your knowledge, you didn’t deserve it. You were supposed to learn by losing money to better players. Sharks and fish. Predator and prey. I’m happy to announce that those days are mostly gone. Today, we have good instructional books & videos, training & practice aids, and instructors & schools. Of course, they’re not all good. Like everything, some are good, some are extraordinary, and some are just plain wrong. But it’s possible now to get great help. Some players are blessed with terrific natural ability. They got good very quickly, and never understood what the problem with everyone else was. They saw angles, they saw ball paths, they clearly remembered shots they had seen before. They could take you through a shot by shot replay of a match they played two years ago. Not everyone is wired up this way. Sure, these players still had to go on and do the work – sink those million balls – to really pull themselves up to their personal potential. There is no escaping doing the work. Nobody just walks up and plays great from day one. But somehow, it came easier for them. This is the story of most pros. Unfortunately for the vast majority of us, it’s not that natural. It doesn’t come that easily. It’s not that obvious to us. We’re not fulltime players, and we’re frustrated because lately, we’re not getting better. We need an edge. The edge is available in several dimensions: superior fundamentals, clearer, better knowledge, more effective practice, engaged exposure to higher level play. We have only so much time and energy to devote to pool, and if we really want to get better, we’d better plan on devoting some of that time and energy to things that will improve our game. So, what can we do?
R ead and watch good material. Be very picky about what you choose to believe from the materials you read and videos you watch. Great players not

necessarily great teachers. In fact, many great players have beliefs about what they’re doing that are completely wrong, from a physics perspective. They can get whatever results they want on the table, but their belief about how they are doing it may not be true. Place your faith in the science types for why things work the way they do, and in the great players for how to play smart and how to win. But be skeptical.
Practice the right things in the right way. Set
aside small amounts of time to work on the worst parts of your game, and do it with all the focus you can bring to bear. Start with an easy version of what you’re working on and gradually make it more challenging, as you improve. Don’t practice failure.
M ake good use of training aids. Seeing yourself on
video is usually a very surprising experience. Most players immediately see things that could be improved. Try working with a practice cue ball, and try to believe what it shows you. Work through drills that look promising.
Find a good instructor. There is no substitute for
hands on help and guidance. Ask around. Instructors with advanced certifications usually have a lot of teaching experience, and they would not have gotten all that experience if they weren’t helping players get better. Good instructors have curriculums that take you through a planned series of learning and practicing, in an organized way. If someone just wants to watch you hit some balls and then show you how they would have done it, you’re probably in the wrong place. Ask some questions and see whether their answers make sense to you. If you find a good instructor, it will be the best money you’ll ever spend on your game. Spending $600 on yet another new cue is not going to raise your game. Spending $600 on serious, proven instruction will make more difference than you can imagine – for the rest of your pool life.
Engage your brain. Actively try to predict and
understand what happens at the table. Watch the best players you can find. Think about why they make the choices they make, and how and why their shot to shot results are what they are. There is way more to this game than people think. You don’t know what you don’t know – and there’s a lot of it. We need every edge we can get. Make your learning time and your practice time count. The gains will eventually show up in your game.

NOT JUST A SET-UP SHOT STEFANO PELINGA stefanopelinga.com
Stefano Pelinga (born 1964) hails from Rome, Italy, where he has served since 1985 as a police officer for the Italian government (Polizia di Stato), until his retirement in 2011. He began to play pool at the age of 12, drawing inspiration from his favorite singer and actor, Dean Martin. Stefano, currently a 5-time World Champion in Pool Trick Shots, won several titles in Italy in straight pool and nine-ball throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. In 1990, he devoted himself entirely to “Artistic Pool,” commonly referred to in its practice as “Trick Shots.” Due to his outstanding achievements, Stefano is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest Trick Shot champions in the history of the sport, and has earned a spot in ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic Hall of Fame. Most importantly, on November 17, 2012, Stefano was inducted into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. In the presence of approximately 500 VIP guests and many sports stars such as Tommy Lasorda, Mike Piazza, Tony Esposito and Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Stefano was awarded this honor, becoming a member of this group of legendary Italian Americans.
I created this shot a long time ago, when I considered myself an amateur trick shot artist. It is of moderate difficulty, provided you have a decent stroke. Let’s start by setting up our three Object Balls: place the yellow 1-Ball at a four-ball distance from the long rail and at a one-ball distance from the left point of pocket E, as shown by the “ghost balls” in the diagram. Then freeze the blue 2-Ball to it, making sure their line of centers aims for the left point of pocket C (blue dotted line). Proceed with freezing the red 3-Ball on the other side of the 1-Ball. This time their line of centers will have to aim for the right point of pocket B (red dotted line). Place the pink 4-Ball by pocket D
and the Cue Ball at a 1.5-ball distance from the 1-Ball, with their centers aiming at the first diamond from side pocket B. All you need to do is to simply aim at the 1-Ball as to pocket it into B. Use a 10 o’clock, 2-tips of English on the CB, with a 3.5 stroke and a smooth followthrough. You will easily pocket all three “set-up” OBs and your CB will slightly curve and hit two rails, before heading towards the 4-Ball and making it into pocket D. Once you are confident you tapped the three OBs in the right place and the set-up works consistently, all you may need is to adjust only the amount of English on the CB: if your CB will come short (hitting the long rail), then either use a 9 o’clock and 1.5 tips of English or keep it at 10 o’clock but use only 1 tip of English. If, instead, your CB is coming long (hitting the short rail), then use a 9 o’clock and 2-tips of English. This shot is perceived by an audience as way more difficult than it actually is, making it a really good crowd-pleaser.

MAKING PROGRESS

If you’ve caught my previous columns, you know I’m a big fan of a practice technique that I call “progressive practice.” If you have some shot you need to practice, such as a stop shot, rather than practice the exact same position over and over, you make the shot harder each time you meet your goal (such as make the ball and stop the cue ball within two inches) or easier if you fail. You might move the cue ball farther from the object ball to make the stop harder. This kind of practice has several advantages including that it lets you know what your 50-50 shot is. If you do nothing but change the difficulty of the shot after each make or miss, the difficulty will automatically adjust to your 50% point. This is good in that you are guaranteed to be challenged by the drill, and you will quickly learn which shots are too risky for you to take in a game. This general idea can be extended beyond single shots. Suppose you want to improve your runout abilities at 9-Ball. If you think you can run four balls, break the rack and remove balls of your choosing until only four are left. Take the cue ball in hand and try to run out. If you fail, try the next rack with only three balls. If you do clear the table, try five balls the next time. The reason for letting you choose which balls to remove is so that there won’t be clusters to deal with for the lower numbers of balls, but as you get up to eight or nine balls, you will have to deal with the clusters. If you do run all nine, add extra balls to the rack as necessary. Count any balls on the break towards your run. If you work up to running all 15 balls most of the time, let me know and we can plan a road trip together.
over with an equal number of stripes and solids in the rack to give you some clutter on the table. In either case, break a full rack to get practice at that too, and remove balls of your choosing. As you work through more racks, you’ll learn to see which balls are problems and which are helpers. In the Diagram is a mediocre break at eight ball, with the 12-Ball pocketed. Suppose you are trying for four from your group with four blockers up. Which balls would you remove (three solids and two stripes) and which group would you take? One solution is to take stripes, remove the 10 and 13, and play the 15, 11, 9, 14 and 8 in that order. To make the run easier, which three solids would you remove? I’d take off the 4 of course, and the 6 to make the position surer on the 11. The only hard position is getting from the 9 to the 14, and I’d use my last “pick” on the 7 to clear that path. An alternative order would be 14, 9, 11, 15 (to the side?) and the 8, with the hardest position being to get from the 11 to a good enough angle the 15. Of course, you aren’t bound to use the pattern you imagined at the start. Can you see a pattern for the solids that is even easier to run? My choice uses a halfball follow angle to get to the eight ball. I’ll give my answer next time, along with a method to turn your problem shots into practice drills that let you work on your weak points. A general discussion of progressive practice and over twenty basic drills are available for free on the SFBA web site at http:// www.sfbilliards.com -- see the Basics Clinic handout. Another good source for drills like this is on the Billiard University website where the free tests from Dr. Dave Alciatore have a wide range of difficulties.
8-Ball can be handled similarly. At first, use just the eight and a number of solids, increasing or decreasing the number with your progress. If you get to running out most of the time with all seven of your group up, start

A MAN’S GOT TO KNOW HIS LIMITATIONS!
Grady “The Professor” Mathews once said, “Pool is 70 percent mental.” Over the years, you have probably made enough poor decisions to believe this is true. Why, then, do we associate our playing ability with physical skill? Honestly, some players are more definable by the way they think than by the way they stroke the cue ball.
Anthony Beeler is the 2017 Pool Instructor of the Year and is a former BCAPL National 9-Ball Champion. He has numerous top 25 national finishes and is one of only 8 ACS Master Instructors in the world. He is the primary author of the National Billiards Instructors Manual and has also authored the book Unstoppable! Positive Thinking for Pool Players. Anthony currently has the highest established Fargo Rating of any Master Instructor. He has won over 300 tournaments and has defeated numerous professional players in tournament competition.
Take the big breaker who crushes the rack but throws a temper tantrum every time he scratches: Yes, he’s got a powerful stroke, but before long his emotions are completely out of control. Next, consider his polar opposite, the guy who strikes the one nice and solid with a firm speed: He has roughly half the physical talents of the big breaker, but he knows his limitations and plays within them. Physical abilities only create potential in pool; it’s application that makes the difference. So why are some pool players measured by their physical talents? It’s because their physical abilities are far more visible than their mental ones. You never hear someone say, “It was the right decision to play safe from there,” or “You never shoot until you are ready.” These factors get little recognition, yet they often pave the way to success, sometimes having a greater effect on a shot’s outcome than the stroke itself. In fact, by thinking positively, you may be able to immediately play a stronger, more effective game of pool. One thing is certain: Without a strong mental game, you will never reach your true potential as a player. No doubt, it’s hard to play “in the moment” and stay focused. In pool, there is a natural tendency to look ahead or dwell on shots you’ve missed. If you have trouble putting mistakes behind you, it’s probably time to take a hard look at yourself. Many players are shocked by the errors they make; for instance, they may miss a shot and let their negative emotions consume them for five games. If this sounds like you, look at your past. If history shows that you occasionally miss a ball, then don’t blow up when it happens. For many players, the game consumes their life. It’s what they do in their

free time, what they read about and watch on the Internet, what they dream about at night when they go to sleep. Take a moment to ask yourself the following questions: Does a bad tournament ruin your day? Does your last match affect your relationships with family and friends? These could all be serious indicators that pool controls your life. If this is the case, I suggest for you to take a short break. Sometimes, getting away from the game can give you a fresh perspective. On the other hand, maybe your perspective is fine, but when you play, you try to be like someone you’re not. For instance, you may want to shoot like Earl Strickland, pocketing ball after ball at a blistering pace. But if your personality is more conservative, shooting fast can throw your game out of balance. The key is for you to be honest with yourself. Figure out what your game should look like, and play within your limitations. Moreover, you must understand that your limitations are based upon your individual ability and your pool game has to fit with your God-given talents. Every match you play has its ups and downs, whether it be pocketing an impossible bank shot or playing a safety that comes back to haunt you. This sets the stage for bumpy road, which can completely take you out of your game. By reading and understanding this monthly column, you can learn to get away from negativity and play pool with a positive outlook. You can also learn to improve your game by benefitting from your nervous energy. Above all, you will learn that a positive mind will figure out a way to win, while a negative mind looks for all the reasons that you can’t. Don’t limit yourself with negative thinking. Be unstoppable…even from yourself!

Johnny Archer Takes Masters 8-Ball Title at 2018 Wyoming Open Saratoga, Wyoming - Numerous new champions have been crowned at the 11th AndyClothUSA.com Wyoming Open! Some, however, are familiar faces with multi-WY Open winner Johnny Archer and multi-winner Shane Van Boening taking top honors in the Masters 8-Ball and Saratoga Divisions respectively. The rest of the divisions saw all new faces in the winner’s circle. The 4-day billiards extravaganza is by far the most popular billiards event in the Rocky Mountain states, with the event using 49 Valley-Dynamo Tables all around town in an Olympic style location format. All the marquee matches were streamed by Lenny Marshall’s OntheRailTV.com “Saratoga reminds me a lot of growing up in my own small town of Twin City, Georgia”, said 8-Ball Masters Division winner and Hall of Famer Johnny Archer. “The people are very friendly and the entire town is very welcoming to the pros.” Archer went undefeated including big wins over USA #1 Shane Van Boening and then won by a big score in the finals against Deuel. Players came from all around the country including Texas, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, South Dakota, Georgia, Hawaii, California, Florida, and from all corners of Wyoming. “Will never forget this place. Such an awesome tournament!”, said up and comer Aubrey Hoxworth of Nebraska. In her first appearance at the WY Open, she took 2nd in the Women’s Classic Division. Last year the Women’s Division became so popular that they added the Classic this year and a Masters. Both events were full, with Anita Smith winning the Masters title and Maria Finley winning the Classic. This event is sponsored by widely popular Andy Cloth USA and played on Valley-Dynamo Tables with Aramith Balls in locations all around town. Local partners include Carbon County Visitors Council, Dukes Bar & Grill, Hotel

x e l , A b b a T a l e a h c i Denis Grabe, M During the third weekend of April, Alex Kazakis of Greece and Denis Grabe of Estonia squared off in the finals of the Dynamic Billiard Ballazzo Open in Austria, with Kazakis besting his 28-year-old friend in the finals, 9-5. The following week, the two men moved across the Atlantic and met again in the finals of a tournament – the Aramith 9-Ball Players Championship. This time, it would be Grabe evening the score, using a combination of ball pocketing and stellar safety play to easily defeat the young Greek 17-7 Sunday evening at Astoria’s Steinway Billiards. “I wanted to win because last week we played in an Eurotour event and he beat me. So, this was a sweet revenge,” said Grabe, who also lost to Kazakis in the quarterfinals of the Kremlin Cup last year. The match was nip-and-tuck in the early stages, as Kazakis won the first two games then watched as Grabe sunk the 2- ball on a jump shot following a push out – the first of four consecutive games that he would win to take a 4-2 lead. Kazakis fought back with three straight wins of his own and had a chance to increase his advantage to 6-4 but missed a 4-9 combination shot. “The turning point of the match was that. After that it was only in favor of Dennis all of the time,” Kazakis said. “I didn’t really have a chance to be at the table. I only had tough shots to make and I missed all of the tough shots.” Grabe would tie the match after the missed combination attempt, then use two breaks and runs along with frustrating safety play to win the next seven games and take an 11-5 lead into the 15-minute intermission. Of Grabe’s 17 wins only three were of the break-and-run variety despite not executing a dry break the entire match. With few clear shots after opening the game, Grabe had to focus on tying up his opponent with safety play and then

taking advantage of any mistakes, which he did throughout the match. “When you’re breaking and you always have the first shot you always have the advantage,” Kazakis said. After the break in play Kazakis’ frustrations continued. Despite Grabe twice relinquishing control of the table after consecutive illegal breaks Kazakis still didn’t see a clean shot on an object ball – losing a safety battle in one game and missing a cut shot on the one-ball in the side pocket in the next rack. Meanwhile, Grabe used a 2-9 combo, some more safety play, and another miss by Kazakis on a 3-ball in the 24th game to close out the match.
Joshua Filler 9-6 to reach the finals. The Aramith 9-Ball Players Championship is the first event of the fourtournament 2018 World Pool Series. This event is being held at Steinway Billiards in Astoria, Queens, New York City from April 19th to 22nd, 2018. The World Pool Series is sponsored by Aramith, Rasson, Predator, Iwan Simonis, Tiger, and Kamui. The Estonian opened the tournament by narrowly escaping Alex Pagulayan 11-10 in the first round then was sent to the one-loss bracket after an 11-9 defeat at the hands of Lee Vann Corteza. Grabe then defeated Ronnie Alcano, Joey Korsiak, and Ruslan Chinahov on Friday to reach the Saturday quarterfinals and face Petri Makkonen. Grabe ran six straight racks on his way to an easy 13-3 defeat of Makkonen, then took advantage of some mistakes from Dennis Orcollo to win 13-8 and advance to the finals. “I had a couple of matches where I managed to win when I could have lost but in the final, I was like dominant. The score line says it all,” Grabe said. It was a disappointing loss for Kazakis, who had many people in the Greek-owned facility cheering him on. “I’m disappointed that I failed them, but it’s okay. One day I will win this event,” Kazakis said. On an adjacent table earlier in the afternoon, Albania’s Klenti Kaci defeated Jayson Shaw 11-7 in the Simonis 9-Ball Players Challenge, a second-chance event for players previously eliminated from the Aramith event. After easily defeating Americans Tommy Tokoph and Kenney Nguyen in the early rounds, Kaci survived Germany’s

The 19 Custom Cue Makers Who Competed for Cue of the Year Honors public until the voting is closed. Anyone that has entry to the show can go to the ACA booth, where the cues are on display, to cast their vote. This year there were 630 votes cast for the nineteen cues entered.
This marked the 26th year of the Super Billiards Expo and the 24rdyear for the ACA (The American Cuemakers Association) event. There were four presentations at the annual member’s dinner which was held on Saturday night at the Super Billiards Expo. Besides the Membership the ACA has two main sponsors from the pool community, Diamond Pool Tables and Simonis Cloth. The dinner is attended by the members who are some of the best Cuemakers in the United States and the World and their guest. The annual membership meeting following the dinner is for members only. The first presentation was a recognition award for retiring ACA Treasurer Steve Klein of Klein Custom Cues of Trophy Club, Texas. Steve had been the treasurer for over 10 years. The 26th annual Allen Hopkins Super Billiards Expo, SBX, was held at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in The Oaks, Pennsylvania, which is in the Valley Forge area. This was the fifth time the event was at this venue, and it keeps improving. The four day event was Thursday April 12th through Sunday April 15th. There were two Pro events, Open 10-Ball and Women’s 9-Ball. There was one Pro Arena for these events, which was a paid venue with VIP and General seating, all of the other events were open to general admission.

The field was extended this year to a max of 64 players and had 56 players. This is done by sanctioning the event with the NAPT, the North American Pool Tour. There was a $300 entry fee with a guaranteed $5,000 first prize. The event was women only, double elimination format race to 9 until the final 8, which would be single elimination race to 11. As with the 10-Ball event there would be no re-draw for the final 16, the 8 players in the noloss bracket and the 8 players in the one-loss bracket would play to one player, with the two meeting in the finals. This was rack your own, alternating break and the 9 on the break was not a win but spotted. The field of 56 contained 4 previous Champions and was hard fought from start to finish. The final was set between three time SBX Champion Karen Corr and Brittany Bryant. Corr was in stroke and determined to add another SBX Championship to her long list of Hall of Fame wins. She took the 2018 Women’s 9-Ball Championship 11-6 with a payday of $5,000. Bryant got 2nd with a payday of $2,800. Congratulations to Karen Corr!

Eleanor Callado Revelina Um to Win 2017-18 Final West Coast Women’s Tour Stop of Season Holds Off
The West Coast Women’s Tour (TWCWT) concluded their 2017-2018 season this past February 10-11, 2018 at Hard Times Billiards in Sacramento. We appreciate the support from our sponsor/owner of Hard Times, Karen Markulis, her family, and her staff. She has been a regular sponsor for the opening and closing events on our schedule. We are very grateful for her hospitality and support. Hard Times is a favored stop for many of our players because of the well-tended tables, ideal for serious pool players. We had 37 players show up for this event, including a handful of new additions. We’ve had great attendance all season, along with over 20 new participants! On Day 1, Saturday, Gigi Callejas (7) received a bye, and then defeated Stephanie Hefner (7), Leslie Bernardi (7), and Eleanor Callado (8). Terri Keasling (6), playing for the second time this season, received a bye, and won matches against Mary Dughi (6) and Frances Tso (6). Revelina Um (7) received a bye, and then defeated Amani Ali (5), Khanh Ngo (7), and Olga Azarova (6). Bonnie Ogg (6) received a bye, and then defeated Motoko Siguenza (7), Bonnie Koerner (5), and Ginger Bowen (6).
Eleanor Callado (8), playing her last stop before taking a hiatus as a player on our tour, received a bye, and then won matches against Katie Murphy (7) and Cassandra Ortega (6). She was sent to the one loss side when she hung the 9-Ball on a hill-hill match against Gigi Callejas (7). Leslie Bernardi (7) received a bye and won against Vivian Corona (6), but was sent to the one

loss side by Gigi Callejas (7). Janna Sue Nelson (7) would lose her second match against Bonnie Koerner (6) on the hill to be put on the one loss side. Revelina was very dominant on her way to the winner’s seat, receiving a bye, winning against Amani Ali 7-3, Khanh Ngo 7-2, Olga Azarova 7-4, Bonnie Ogg 7-1, and Gigi Callejas 7-1. Her energy level was very different from any other event. She shot with confidence and a smooth stroke, even against Eleanor, who was Revelina’s final challenger, coming all the way from the one loss side. The score of this final match was 7-5.

At the end of first day of competition the winners’ side had 4 players remaining. Main Event/37 players 1st $#25 Revelina Um 2nd $250 Eleanor Callado 3rd $200 Gigi Callejas 4th $150 Janna Sue Nelson 5/6th $100 Bonnie Ogg, Terry Keasling 7/8th $75 Emilyn Callado, Leslie Bernardi
Gigi Callejas (7) vs. Terry Keasling (6) and Revelina Um (7) vs. Bonnie Ogg (6). The one loss side for this event was extremely heavy. We saw regular top 8 finishers trying to stay alive: Janna Sue Nelson (7) vs. Leslie Bernardi (7) and Eleanor Callado (8) vs. Emilyn Callado (7). The one loss side had a few surprises. One of them being Emilyn Callado (7), who had lost her first match to Cony Mendoza (5) on the winners’ side. Emilyn made costly mistakes and Cony capitalized on them. She would, however, work the one loss side and win a total of five matches to make it to top 8.

The highlight of the final stop is that TWCWT rewards all of the players who participated in at least five of the nine stops by issuing points money. Every player is rewarded a certain amount of points depending on how they place; regardless of their finish, they earn some points. It was also time to raffle the end-of-the-year pool cue and case, all donated by Castillo Leather Goods. One of the local patrons walked away the winning prize.
EMILYN CALLADO
West Coast Tour Season Champion
Next, we want to congratulate our TWCWT Season Champion who has come very far this year: Emilyn Callado! Previously ranked #3 overall in 2016 and #2 in 2017, this is her first time as Tour Champion, barely edging out her sister, Eleanor, who’s been Tour Champion for at least 4 years in a row. Emilyn won her first and only tour stop last year, double-dipping Eleanor in the finals, and was ecstatic because it was her first win since she started playing in 2003. This season, it was 3 wins that moved her to the 1st place spot!
NORTH AMERICA POOL TOUR REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS Bernardi (2nd), Nelson (3rd), Emilyn (5th) & Skye (13th)
Finally, TWCWT sent 11 of our ladies to participate in the North American Pool Tour (NAPT) Regional Tour Championships (RTCs), also hosted at Hard Times Billiards in Sacramento. It was four days of pool, facing off against top players in several women’s tours across the nation with a total of 45 participants. Of the 11 TWCWT players, four made their way through their round robin group to advance to the top 24 double elimination board: Jessica Skye, Janna Sue Nelson, Leslie Bernardi, and Emilyn Callado. What a great representation of The West Coast Women’s Tour! We are so proud of the level of play that our tour brings. We will be off for a few weeks and will start to work on the schedule for the 2018-2019 session. Stay tuned.

West Coast Women’s Tour Unveils 2018-19 Season The West Coast Women’s Tour has finished up their preparation toward the 2018 season. The members of the committee in charge of running this successful tour are: Eleanor Callado - Director of Finance, Budgeting and Webmaster, Emilyn Callado - Director of Communications & Membership, Kevin Yi - Tournament Director and Stats keeper and Cony Mendoza - Director of Marketing and Sponsorships. Every year the members of the committee make changes to better different areas of the tour such as handicap process, sponsors, NAPT guidelines and others. Eleanor Callado has announced that her main focus for this year will be that of supporting the tour and its needs instead of participating as a player. She will be focusing on attending pro events. This announcement has caused different reactions amongst the participants, some feel they have a better chance of placing in top spots and some feel they will miss an opportunity to play and be around someone of her caliber. BEF Looking for Junior State Championships Hosts in Ohio, Colorado and Nevada
The BEF Junior Nationals is the most prestigious youth billiard event in North America. Celebrating its 30th anniversary, this year’s event will be held July 10-14, 2018 at the New Orleans Convention Center in New Orleans, LA. Top young cueists will compete for academic scholarships, prizes, and an opportunity to represent North America at the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) World Junior 9-Ball Championships. Junior State Championships (JSC) are held nationwide and we encourage you to participate as a host site. Please submit your applications to host a JSC by May 16, 2018. For over 3 decades, young billiard student-athletes from all over the country compete in local qualifiers for their chance at this prestigious title, scholarship dollars, and prizes. It’s the only junior event in the U.S. that qualifies young players to compete at the WPA (World Pool-Billiard Association) World Junior 9-Ball Championships. Between junior leagues, qualifiers and the Junior State Championship program, the BEF is anticipating its largest participation this year. The national championships boast 8 divisions: 18 & Under Boys, 16 & Under Boys, 14 & Under Boys, 11 & Under Boys (non-world-qualifying division), 18 & Under Girls, 16 & Under Girls, 14 & Under Girls, and 11 & Under Girls (non-world-qualifying division). The three upper age divisions for both boys and girls will also all be World Qualifiers. Those matches will be played on 20 each, 9’ Diamonds. Deadline to register is June 30, 2018. A special addition to the national tournament continues in the magnetism and competitive challenge of “artistic pool”, says ESPN & World Masters Trick Shot Champion Tom “Dr. Cue”® Rossman. For 25 years, this unique and exciting championship has run parallel to the 9-ball event. Each player in 8 youthful divisions of the 2018 BEF National Junior Championships has the opportunity to “take the artistic challenge”. “Everyone has a chance to win the 2018 BEF Junior National “Artistic Pool” Championship title in his/her respective division. It’s easy, it’s exciting, it’s fun, and it’s an experience you will never forget.” The Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) was formed in 1993 committed to promoting a lifelong love of pool and building the next generation of players through youth programs and academic scholarships. The BEF also sanctions Junior State Championships, produces the annual Junior National 9- Ball Championships and qualifies young players each year for the WPA World Junior Championships.

Friday night a selected few will compete in the 2nd Ben Zeman Trickshot Shootout; a side exhibition that honors the late Ben Zeman. Ben was the founder of the Wisconsin Artistic Pool Players Association. (later renamed the World Artistic Pool Players Association) The WAPPA was formed for players to share their shots and a way for players to connect with each other online. Ben also started an amateur artistic pool movement in Wisconsin as well as an APA league. His dream was to have some of the top players compete in this format. This is a freestyle event where the players bring out whatever shot they want and the other players must duplicate it. If they fail to make the shot, they get a letter. If they make the shot, the don’t get a letter. At our last event “The Gentlemen” William DeYonker outlasted “The Michigan Kid” Jason Lynch and Abram “Too Tall” Dias to win the championship belt. William will be defending his title again against Jason and Abram. We’ll see if William can keep the belt, or if either Jason and Abram can take it from him.
Ben said, “I want to leave a Legacy” and the WPA-APD will make sure that his legacy will live on. We are also pleased to announce that this tournament and the side events will be streamed for free by Rack’em Joe Live Stream. You can follow the stream at rackemjoelivestream.com. Annual 14.1 World Pool Tournament The greatest 14.1 players in history come back each year to vie for the most prestigious & traditional title in pool
New York City- One era ends, and a new era begins. After 5 years, the World 14.1 will be moving to a new venue, the recently opened The Spot Billiards Cafe. On August 13-19th, 2018, The Spot will have the honor of hosting the longest running and oldest tradition in billiards, the World Tournament of 14.1. For well over a decade, the World Tournament of 14.1 will be staged which has already set the record as the longest consecutive run of the championship ever in its 106 year history, with Dragon Promotions continuing at the helm. This year’s 78th World Tournament of 14.1 will be presented by BottleDeck.net . A star studded 48 player round-robin field is expected for this year’s lineup that will be aiming to win the world’s greatest straight pool championship. The World 14.1 is sanctioned by the WSA World Sports Alumni. “Upon visiting the Spot Billiards my very first time, I knew right away it would be a fantastic venue for the World 14.1. Everything in the room is pristine and well thought out. You can tell the owners took great care in making sure their room would not just satisfy players of all backgrounds, but also that it would be capable of hosting world class events”, said Charlie Williams, Executive Producer of Dragon Promotions and CEO of the WSA World Sports Alumni. “We love the enthusiasm and hospitality that the Spot Billiard Cafe has given thus far. We feel confident that the players and fans are going to love the new look of the World Tournament”, said Cindy Lee, CEO of Dragon Promotions. “We are excited and honored to be hosting this prestigious event. The Spot family has been both fan and participants of the sport. We are excited to bring this level of play to our hometown in the Hudson Valley “, said Lenore DonovanChen, co-owner of The Spot. She continues, “One of our goals is to help educate and teach the next generation about billiards. We believe that the local poolplayer, as well as the adjoining communities, will enjoy the opportunity to witness a world championship event right in their hometown. Our goal as both avid fans and players of the sport is to help teach the next generation about the game and the multiple ways in which it helps to think critically and strategically all while using mathematics and science.” The Spot has a total of 22 pool tables compiled of 14 regulation and 8 bar tables with a full bar that also serves food. The Spot has hosted numerous regional proam tournaments as well as operating their own successful in-house tournaments that have 100% entry pay-outs. PERFORMANCE
MAKES ALL OF THE DIFFERENCE The most important factor in cue ball deflection is cue end mass. Katana shafts use a ferrule that is half the length with thinner walls to reduce the amount of cue ball “squirt” during play.
7 Responsive Top Layers The top 7 layers are medium density boar hide, tanned naturally up to 12 months to achieve maximum control and consistency.
3 Foundation Layers The bottom 3 layers are high density pig skin, selected for its premium durability and legendary feel.
KATXS1
TIP: 12.5mm Katana tip by Tiger FERRULE: 3/8” Long Thin Wall Fiber TAPER: Pro
KATXS2
TIP: 11.5mm Katana tip by Tiger FERRULE: 3/8” Long Thin Wall Fiber TAPER: Conical
KATANA PERFORMANCE SHAFT TECHNOLOGY 10-Piece Spliced Radial Construction The grain in a solid wooden shaft creates a natural spine which affects how the cue ball reacts to impact. Rotating the cue, even a quarter turn, will change how the shaft performs. By splitting the shaft into ten sections and alternating the direction of the grain, Katana removes natural variances and provides lower deflection and more consistent results.
