Alex Pagulayan proved the Lion still roars within him as he came from behind to steal the US Open 8-Ball Championship from Shane Van Boening, who had hoped for a second consecutive title and to earn back-to-back wins of both the US Open 8-Ball and US Open 10-Ball Championships. Pagulayan’s path to the finals included wins over: Danny Stone, Australia, 8-6; Skyler Woodward, Kentucky, 8-2; and Denis Grabe, Estonia, 8-3; before losing to Dennis Orcollo, Philippines, 7-8. In the loser’s bracket, Pagulayan bested Thorsten Hohmann, Germany, 8-7 and Lee Vann Corteza, Philippines and then gained revenge on Orcollo in the semi-finals, beating him 8-6.

Van Boening jumped out to a fast 7-2 lead, which may have seemed insurmountable to all but Pagulayan. But as Van Boening’s breaks came up dry, Pagulayan was able to capitalize, slowly closing the gap and soon the

score was tied at 8-8. The score was tied again at 9-9 in the race-to-10 final, with Van Boening breaking. But once again the break failed Van Boening, with the cue ball scratching – giving Pagulayan an opportunity at the table, which was all he needed. With ball-in-hand, Pagulayan was able to run out to earn the US Open 8-Ball Champion title, cup and $13,500 purse.

The Psychology of Pool SET GOALS FOR FUTURE SUCCESS!

Goal setting is arguably the best technique an athlete can use to immediately improve his or her performance. Interestingly, although this statement is true, very few athletes actually know how to set effective goals. In other words, far too often athletes set what we call “do your best” type goals that are extremely vague (i.e. “to become a better pool player”) and without any timelines to measure success (re-read the example I just gave – how will you know when you have become “better?”). Research studies in sport psychology clearly show people who set specific, measurable goals almost always out-perform people who set “do your best” type goals (or people who set no goals at all). By setting and achieving goals, your self-confidence will dramatically improve – and so will your pool game.

This month I would like to share a few tips so that you can begin setting goals for immediate success:

• Begin by brainstorming all the goals you want to achieve, and for now don’t worry about how vague the goals might be (we will refine them later). Take out a sheet of paper and start writing down as many things as you want to accomplish and try to do this in just a few minutes. • Once you have your list, go back through each goal and look to see whether it is vague (“win more”) or specific (“make at least one ball on every break”) • When writing your goals, try to develop as many process goals as you can. A process goal is a goal you can control (i.e. starting each match confident and composed), whereas an outcome goal is a goal

typically beyond your complete control (winning tournaments is great, but ultimately you never control ‘winning’ if the opponent has a shot to win, too). By reaching your process goals, you will ultimately reach more outcome goals (and win more games!) Try to break your goals into three areas: Physical, technical, and mental. An example of a physical goal can be making sure to get 8 hours of sleep the night before a tournament or to have water on hand all day in order to stay hydrated. A technical goal might be to practice until you can successfully make 90% of spot shots. A mental goal could be making a point to use a deep breath between each shot. Your goals should always be in writing and you should have dates attached to each goal so you can monitor your success. It is also wise to develop short-, mid-, and long-term goals. We call this technique developing a “goal ladder,” and it has been found to be a very effective technique. Other tips include being realistic with your goals, as well as being somewhat flexible if you don’t first succeed. Keep track of all your progress by keeping a journal. While this may sound kind of funny, you will find that our memories are really not that great – and a journal will actually help you recall some of your better moments. Your journal should include all of your goals, as well as regular entries that allow you to update your progress along the way.

Some folks call goals “dreams with finish lines.” Start today by defining the player you want to one day become, then work backwards to develop the necessary steps to get you there.

“Ball-in-Hand” (BIH) is an enormous penalty for the player who fouls in 9-Ball, in 10-Ball, and in some popular rule sets for 8-Ball, such as APA. It’s also an enormous opportunity for the incoming player. Often, this opportunity is wasted. Advanced players take full advantage of BIH, intelligently planning cueball placement, the shot, the position, and the strategy. Working with many novice and intermediate players, I find they typically fail to consider some of the aspects of the situation that are obvious to their more experienced opponents. They tend to rush in and plop the cueball down and shoot the first shot they see, and of course, don’t get the appropriate shape on the next shot. My advice is “When you get Ball-in-Hand, take Ballin-Mind.” Stop and study the table and the game situation. Consider the current possibilities, the next shots, the layout problems, your skills, and your opponent’s skills. Make a plan before you place that cueball. In pool, the standard concern is always “How do I shoot the current shot in such a way that I get an angle on the next shot that takes me to the one after that.” We’re nearly always planning at least three balls. With BIH, we can think the plan through and set up the “current shot” in a way that most easily or naturally pockets the ball and gets us to the next shot or solves the next problem. Let’s look at the primary factors. Good Plan: Study the table until you have arrived at the plan you will try to execute. This is a big opportunity. Your first idea might not be your best. Don’t be shortsighted. Good plans don’t always mean you run out for the win. Sometimes a safety or strategic ball re-arrangement is the smart play. Good Shot Sequence: Don’t just shoot the ball that’s closest to a pocket. And don’t consider just the closest pockets for your first ball. When possible, chose position routes that are simple and natural – don’t shoot extreme, fancy shots with BIH. If you can’t get to your second shot from your first shot, it’s probably not a good plan. Minimize use of english on the first shot. Why make it harder? Good Distance: Make the shot easy. Place the CB reasonably close to the OB. Too close and you might not have room for your full, normal stroke. Typical good distance is about a foot. Note: There is nothing manly about putting the CB four feet away when it’s not necessary. If possible, don’t place the

CB where you have to stretch or use the mechanical bridge. Avoid rail bridges too, when you can. Good Angle: Consider the shot angle for your CB placement. Is it an angle for which you have high confidence in pocketing the ball? Can you see the path the cueball will take off the OB, and is that the path you want? Thin cut angles will leave a lot of speed in the CB, while thick hits will take speed out of the ball. Shoot angles that make it easy to move the CB the amount of distance you want. Good Speed: Once you have a good cueball plan and placement, and it’s time to shoot, you just have to think about speed. How much speed will it take, given the distance, angle of approach, and spin? Is this a comfortable, reliable speed for you? Good Landing Zones: If you stand behind your next shot, you can use your stick to help you roughly visualize the wedge-shaped position zone you need to land in for that shot. The wedge is smaller near the OB, which means it’s harder to land in that part of the zone. Smart players often play to roll across the fat part of the wedge or to roll toward the OB through the distant portion of the zone. This makes it a lot easier to stop successfully within the wedge. Good Results: Draw is hard to control. Go for simple follow or stop shots. Don’t move the CB more than necessary. Don’t disturb balls that don’t need to be moved. Go for the easiest plan to execute. If your plan calls for you to do things at the outer limits of what you can reliably do, maybe you need to switch to a defensive plan. After you sink a ball, reanalyze your plan, adding a new third ball and adjusting for the new reality of the table situation. Good Improvement: In practice, shoot hundreds of “Three-Ball Patterns.” Throw three balls on the table, study the layout, make a plan to run out, place the CB, and shoot the pattern you saw. Try to find the simplest, most natural plan. Learn from what happens. Seek coaching when it’s allowed, or if you’re playing a friendly game, talk through your plan and your friend’s plan and see whether there is a good alternative you haven’t thought of or a problem you haven’t foreseen. So when you get Ball-in-Hand, don’t play Ball-in-Hope. Seize the opportunity – take Ball-in-Mind. Plan your play and then play your plan. And remember the #1 rule of BIH: Don’t miss!

More Than Just Setting Up (1) As you all may know by now, set up shots never appealed to me as once you set them up right, any mediocre player can shoot them successfully. However, certain set up shots do require some skills and this month I am going to explain to you the first of a series of not-so-easy set up shots.

Stefano Pelinga (born 1964) hails from Rome, Italy, where he has served since 1985 as a police officer for the Italian government (Polizia di Stato), until his retirement in 2011. He began to play pool at the age of 12, drawing inspiration from his favorite singer and actor, Dean Martin. Stefano, currently a 5-time World Champion in Pool Trick Shots, won several titles in Italy in straight pool and nine-ball throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. In 1990, he devoted himself entirely to “Artistic Pool,” commonly referred to in its practice as “Trick Shots.” Due to his outstanding achievements, Stefano is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest Trick Shot champions in the history of the sport, and has earned a spot in ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic Hall of Fame. Most importantly, on November 17, 2012, Stefano was inducted into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. In the presence of approximately 500 VIP guests and many sports stars such as Tommy Lasorda, Mike Piazza, Tony Esposito and Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Stefano was awarded this honor, becoming a member of this group of legendary Italian Americans.

Let’s start by placing our first object ball (the Red Ball) on the head spot and our second object ball, the Yellow one, behind and frozen to it. Their line of centers needs to aim at the left half of pocket F, as shown by the dotted red line. Finally place the last object ball (the Blue one) by pocket F, at about 1/2 diamond from it and about 1/2 inch from the long rail’s edge. You can choose to place the Blue Ball on a new piece of chalk, just to provide some extra excitement to your audience. Place the Cue Ball at about one diamond from the long rail and in line with the Yellow Ball and the first diamond from pocket F, as shown by the dotted yellow line. Aim about 1/6 of the Yellow Ball, to its left, if you are playing with a low deflection shaft (Tiger X-Ultra LD or Pro, Predator 314 or Vantage, OB-2 or OB Pro +, etc.) or 1/4 of the Yellow Ball if you are playing with a traditional shaft. Use a 3 o’clock and 1 tip of English along A F with a speed-3 stroke.

Slicing the left side of the Yellow Ball will make your cue ball travel faster than the Red Ball, resulting in passing in front of it while the latter is travelling towards corner pocket F. While you will pocket the Red Ball into the F-pocket and the Yellow Ball into the E-pocket, the CB will hit 4 rails to make a billiards onto the Blue Ball. If you successfully hit the Blue Ball with your CB, you will likely pocket it into pocket F, especially if you placed it on a piece of chalk.

Money Ball -- A Four-Player Game

When I was first learning to play, one of my favorite games was Money Ball. This game has regional variations in the rules and the name. In some places it is called Razzle and in others Chicago. I will try to recount the rules we went by back in the 1960s. If you have four roughly equal players it can be a fun learning experience. Pairs are formed during the play of each rack, and partners are allowed to discuss the shot. This is a rotation game so you have to hit the lowest remaining ball first. There are five money balls, the 5, 8, 10, 12 and 15, worth one “way” each. The player who makes the 5 ball is partners with the player who makes the 1 ball. If that’s the same person, then whoever makes the 8 is partners with the 1-5 person and so on. Draw cards or lag to determine the order of play. That will remain the order except when partners have been determined or a player has requested a new order. Rack the balls as shown so the money balls are as protected as possible. If you find that one of those spots is not safe on your table, try a different spot. Slop counts, and you shoot until you foul or miss. If you foul, any ball you made on that shot spots up. On scratches, it’s cue ball behind the line, and on any other foul the incoming player shoots from where the cue ball came to rest. The incoming player after any foul can ask the fouler to shoot again. You have to make a good effort to hit the lowest ball unless all agree it’s not possible and then you can play a push out. You never spot a ball that has been made legally. When partners are formed the player order changes slightly so that sides alternate. Suppose the normal order is A, B, C, D. If A has the 1 ball and B makes the 5 ball, making A and B partners, C will follow B when he misses but then A will shoot and then D. You will need four places to put the balls as they are made. The ball rack in the table will work for two people and the left/right sides of the ball tray can be storage for the other two. When partners are formed, merge their accumulations. Besides the 5 ways for the money balls, 2 ways are scored for points which is the total value of the numbers on all the balls each side makes, such as 14 for the 14 ball. Since the total of all 15 balls adds up to 120, 61 or more points wins those 2 ways. Whoever makes the last ball gets to break in the next rack. If someone had asked for a new order before the just-finished rack started, the three nonbreakers draw for a new order. If one side sweeps all 7 ways (5 money balls and 2 for total points), their win is doubled to 14 ways. It is possible for one player to sweep and not have a partner. In that case he wins 14 from each of the other players. The game is more fun if the ways are not worth so much that

people start to get too serious. Back in the day, a dime a way was about right. We always kept score on paper and settled up at the end. As far as strategy goes, keep an eye out in the early part of the game for both the money balls and the high balls. A 14 ball puts you nearly a quarter of the way to 61 points. The 2, 3 and 4 are only useful to you if they are sure to get you the 5 ball, and there is rarely an easy pattern at the start of a rack. This is a great game because of the challenging shots and the social interaction that you get with rotating partners. Try

How you deal with this pressure will determine how well you play. If you fail to handle it properly, you’ll end up with a bad stroke and a bad performance. You’ve probably already guessed what the number one stroke killer is: nervous tension. In this article my goal is to help you: • Prevent tension in your pool stroke • Become aware of body tension • Reduce tension so you can stroke your cue more freely We all want to play well during an important tournament. We all want the best results we can get. You know, our goal is to produce that winning feeling you get as you lift the championship trophy! But the bottom line is, the more we think about getting that result, the more we trigger the fear of failure which creates performance anxiety. We have to play in the present moment to be free from fear. Whatever it is we are fearful of (missing the 9-ball), we usually have some sort of physical response. We tend to tense our muscles to protect ourselves from what we consider to be the threat (missing). During any tournament match, stroke mechanics don’t really change

by themselves. Tension in the muscles destroy a fluid stroke and can change the entire pre-shot process that is commonly used by players when they are playing just for fun. This is one of the main differences between the practice room and tournament play (no consequences versus consequences). In order to play your best, you need to do your best to prevent tension, and if it still appears, be sure to notice it and deal with it appropriately. So you might ask yourself the question, “How do I eliminate tension in my pool stroke?” • Becoming engrossed in your pre-shot routine is the number one thing you can focus on to reduce tension. It is what you can control 100% of the time, not what you can’t. • Playing in the present moment (fear and pressure do not exist in the present) • Not thinking about consequences – keeping focused on the purpose/strategy for each shot, not the consequences. • Post shot routine – focus on the strategy (angle, speed and spin), this allows you to be neutral and bounce back from poorly played shots. How do we reverse the effects of tension in the pool stroke? • Visualize all practice games as if they were the tournament championship. • Practice with different levels of tension in your muscles. • Use muscle relaxation techniques. • Learn deep breathing techniques. Put all of these techniques and strategies into action and I have no doubt you’ll play with a fluid stroke and win more tournaments. When you focus on winning you tend to fall into one of the games biggest pitfalls. When you learn to focus on the process you will get better results and win more tournament championships.

July 30th brought another great 10-ball tournament to Samâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Billiards! 29 players (21 open and 8 masters), with $500 added the total pot was $830! Congratulations to Steve Lingelbach going undefeated, Paul Marquez taking 2nd, and Cole Gibbons taking 3rd! The highest finishing open player out of the money was Jared Santoyo who pocketed $29 for his efforts. Jared also won a stab at the new 10-ball break and run pot but didn't get too far with it, so that $29 will carry over to next month. On August 25-26, 2017, the August Andy Cloth Nubbins Memorial Monthly Pool Tournament in Saratoga, WY was held at Duke’s Bar & Grill. Players from Centennial, Rawlins, Casper & Saratoga Wyoming & Ft. Collins, CO clashed for the 8-ball title. The eventual winner and former Wyoming State Champion, Matt Sanchez, of Rawlins, WY, went through the field undefeated on his way to a 1st place finish that included tough wins over Ian Lee, Ricardo Martinez, Justin Martinez, Perry Gilbert & Anthony Lucero! Tournament runner up honors went to Anthony Lucero of Rawlins, WY who shot strong all weekend after suffering an opening match loss to Ricardo Martinez before winning six straight matches with wins over Lee, Ross Lovato, Brandon Brown, Justin Martinez, Ricardo Martinez & Gilbert to get back to the championship match. Casper, WY player, Perry Gilbert, had another strong presence during the weekend and finished up in the 3rd place spot with opening wins over James Watkins, Ross Lovato, and Jake Brown before dropping the hot seat match to Sanchez. Ricardo Martinez posted a 4-2 record as he claimed the money in the 4th place spot.

PEREZ One Pocket Champ

Our August One Pocket Tournament, held on August 18, 2017 at the Golden Fleece in Seattle, WA, saw one more qualified player for the Grand Finale. Players who haven’t qualified need to start thinking about playing every tournament until they do, before time runs out. We now have 8 players qualified and $700 set aside for the Finale. It looks like by the time we have our 16 players and two alternates the added money will be about $1500. Remember you need to come in first or second to qualify. Dates for the Grand Finale will be announced when we reach our player field limit.

Saturday’s play was a continuation of last month’s tournament where John Plunkett dominated the field. Sometimes coming through the One-Loss side is a motivator and John showed that he was motivated. After an early loss to Carl in the first round, John stepped up his game and sent player after player out until ultimately meeting up with Carl for the second time. This was a revenge match for John and Carl was out gunned. John then faced Preacher Ronn but continued his roll with a 2/0 win and was now waiting for an opponent. On the Winner’s side, Al Perez terrorized the field sending Dave (a 10-rated player) and Preacher Ronn (a 10A-rated player) to the One-Loss side. By far Al’s toughest match came when he had to give up 8/7 to the young

gun, Travis. It wasn’t in the cards for Travis and Al captured the Hot-Seat. Travis in a moment of disorientation and failure to properly calculate forfeited his match to John and along with that, a chance to qualify for the Grand Finale. Bad move Travis.

With that, the stage was set for our finals where Al Perez faced off against John Plunkett giving up 8/7 – 8/8. The finals would be a race to three, and Al as the winner of the winner’s bracket would have the first break. With a text book break that could easily be found in any How-To book on One Pocket, Al showed John that he was here to play too. The match ultimately came down to Hill/Hill. It’s fun for the gallery to see hill/hill matches and it shows that the rating system is working to create a playing field where everyone can play, have fun and be competitive. In the end, it was Al Perez who would ultimately overcome. Congrats to our 3rd place winner Travis Keadle. No John, you don’t get two spots for the Grand Finale for coming in 2nd but you do get to take home the cash prize. Finally, congrats to Al Perez for his 1st place finish taking home $250 and qualifying for the Grand Finale. Next month’s tournament will be on September 16th. NATIONAL ADVENTURE - Cathedral High School students Arianna Dumeng, Eliana Rodriguez and Sharon Villacres competed at the Billiard Education Foundation’s Junior National 9-Ball Championships in Las Vegas this month. All three, seniors come September at Cathedral, earned a spot on the tournament honor roll for having a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. The secret is out. Cathedral High School offers a billiards club as a student activity. As students enter and leave the school cafeteria, they pass an adjoining room and now see three pool tables. The tables and the club’s recent success have raised awareness and interest. Twenty-five students were a part of the club in the 2016-2017 school year, compared with a high of 15 the year before. “I believe, little by little, the club is getting known due to some of us joining and people asking us where we’re going after school. They’ve taken an interest in it, and may try out or watch us play,” Arianna Dumeng, a 17-year-old rising senior from the Bronx, told CNY. Mike Muldoon, a religion teacher at the 590-student girls’ school in Manhattan, founded the club in 2002. At that time, the players practiced and competed at Eastside Billiards in Manhattan. The

club still competes in a national qualifier at Eastern Billiards, but Cathedral is now the club’s home. Two eight-foot pool tables were privately donated to the school in 2016. Muldoon said two others were offered, but Cathedral did not have space for the tables. Blatt Billiards in Manhattan also donated a nine-foot table in 2015. The club meets once a week and starts practice by working on fundamentals before playing a popular game such as 8-ball or 9-ball, or learning a new one like snooker. The club accepts beginners and more experienced players. This year, the club hosted the school’s first tournament. Club members were teamed with teachers and administrators to raise money and awareness. “I founded the club for the number one reason of having fun. It’s always been my number one goal,” Muldoon said. The club has qualified three players in each of the past two years for the Billiard Education Foundation’s Junior National 9-Ball Championships. This year’s qualifiers participated in the club’s first boot camp with Muldoon to fine-tune their fundamentals in preparation for nationals. Eliana also won the Brendan Crockett Character (Sportsmanship) Award. “It’s a fun game, but the thing I like more is it’s challenging, and I love good challenges,” said Eliana, an 18-year-old rising senior from Brooklyn. “Billiards has an infinite number of possibilities.” Sharon, a 16-year-old Queens resident and a three-year club member, was a newcomer to the game when she joined as a freshman. She remembers almost hitting someone with a ball that left the table surface with her first shot. “By the end of the year, I decided I liked pool and the seniors at the time were really nice and helpful. They helped me understand pool and I stayed in the club,’’ she said. “At the beginning, it was a social thing. As I continued playing, the game was pretty fun. After I was able to learn the actual rules of the game and learned how to play the game, I enjoyed it even more.’’ In the new school year, the club will make sure fun remains a key focus. Judging by their recent success, so will qualifying players for junior nationals. “If you use it as the little measuring stick it can be, we made more progress this year than we did last year,’’ Muldoon said. “These girls are getting better at what they do.’’

Dancing Angels and Gospel Trick Shots

On Wednesday, July 19, 2017, a very usual thing happened on the Gospel Trick Shot portable pool table while Tom “Dr. Cue” Rossman and Steve Lillis were performing their usual Gospel Trick Shot (GTS) presentation in front of 250 inner city young people at Inspire Sports Camps in the Taconic Retreat Center in Upstate New York. Tom and Steve had just performed a similar GTS show on the same GTS portable pool table the day before at Solid Rock Day Camp in West Milford, NJ for 150 campers. Little did they know at the time that 12 more GTS shows on the GTS portable pool table would follow in Canada with the usual expected results with the Gospel Trick Shots on the pool table. However, on July 19th at the Taconic Retreat Center something very strange was about to happen and with a combined total of 113 years of billiard experience between Tom and Steve there was no apparent explanation for the events that night. It all started at lunch time on July 19th when Tom and Steve arrived at the Taconic Retreat Center. The camp director had to scold the 250 inner city youth campers about the toilets being stopped up and it appeared to be “no” accident. After threatening to close down the bathrooms the campers were told to put both hands in the air and to clap on the count of three if they agree to report any suspicious activities in the bathrooms for the rest of the week. And on the count of three, 250 young people were in agreement for obvious reasons. At dinner Tom and Steve left early to go set up the GTS portable pool table for an 8:00 pm GTS presentation in

the gym with seating for 250 campers. Well, here they were all set up and with one hour to spare. However, there was one big problem that 113 years of billiard experience between Tom and Steve could not solve. The trick shots for no apparent reason would not go in! As a matter of fact, the balls came off the rails at different angles even after hitting the balls in the same direction with the same spin and at the same speed. There was no way to adjust! The camp director came by 15 minutes before the show and asked if everything was all right to which Tom and Steve responded, “everything is fine except the balls will not go in the pockets”. The camp director began to panic and asked if they wanted a different location and set up to which Tom and Steve replied stoically, since they have done well over 100 shows together, “everything will be just fine”! Two hundred and fifty campers filed in and after the camp director announced, “fresh off their international pro tour 2017 BCA Hall of Famer and legendary billiard entertainer Tom “Dr. Cue” Rossman and World Renown Gospel Trick Shot Artist and Professional Pool Player Steve Lillis are both here tonight just for you”, and then the show started with a bang. Tom as usual led off with his fantastic array of shots but many were not falling into the pockets. and Steve to pray for the 250 campers with Tom on one side and Steve on the other. Steve led the prayer and Tom followed in leading the campers in a prayer of commitment to God. Remembering lunch time and the commitment the campers made concerning the bathrooms, Steve and Tom asked the campers to raise two hands over their heads and on the count of three clap their hands together to make a commitment to Jesus to give their lives and their problems over to God. And on the count of three about 100 campers made that commitment on July 19th. After that prayer, the camp director asked the campers to come down and thank Tom and Steve personally. One by one they came and shared how the message encouraged them as they have lost love ones, struggled with gang violence, wrestled with addictions, contemplated suicide, and have been overwhelmed with feelings of hopelessness.

The shot did not fall and 250 inner city kids began to chant PIZZA, PIZZA, etc. Tom decided to not shoot his last shot and left his props of big pool balls, medium pool balls, and small pool balls on the table and said, “now Steve will come out and explain how God took care of a big problem in his life”. Steve came to the table and to say the least was not too excited about trying to execute the shots under these difficult circumstances. However, he pressed on with his real-life story of the death of his granddaughter Ella in 2014 and how God worked everything out for good in the life of his family. The shots were not falling but the story pressed on! Then Steve realized that the 250 campers were no longer interested in two pool players with 113 years of billiard experience with many accolades between them and who could not fully execute all the trick shots. So, Steve proceeded to bring the story to a close followed by an invitation to trust Jesus for whatever problems they were encountering in their lives.

The next morning before Tom and Steve took off for Canada to do 12 more GTS shows on that same portable pool table they wanted to have one last talk with the camp director who stated the night before that he was surprised by so many missed shots. Tom wanted to give the camp director a copy of his new training manual “Student of the Game and Life” which talks about his trademark philosophy that “a miss is a make in disguise”. It became obvious to Tom and Steve that the misses defied billiard physics and that they served to get Tom and Steve out of the way so the message could be fully received by the campers. After our brief discussion with the camp director he understood all the missed shots and also the bathrooms clogging up. Two days later Tom and Steve met with a pastor Open Daily in Canada who remarked after hearing 11am-2:30am the story, the Lord placed “dancing All Ages Area angels” on the pool table to prevent the 6 Gold Crowns shots from going in so the campers could Over 21 Area focus on the message. That is indeed 8 Gold Crowns beyond our natural understanding and 2 Diamonds something that only God can do!

The 2017 Masters Championship took place Friday, Aug. 18. Now We Know of Richmond, Va. Larry Kressel, Chris Bruner, David Hunt and Shane Buchanan, are the 2017 Masters Champions! They walked away with $10,000 for the win! Runners-Up, Original Three Amigos of San Bernardino, Calif. – Frank Almanza, Elias Valles and Jose Garcia, didn’t leave empty-handed earning $5,000. Now We Know’s Hunt played against Original Three Amigos’ Garcia in the first match. Hunt put his team on top first, winning 7-4. The second match paired Now We Know’s Bruner and Original Three Amigos’ Elias. Elias was able to keep his team in the running, winning 7-4. 29th Annual BEF Jr Nationals Showcase BOYS 18U

August 18th, 2017 (Las Vegas, NV): The most respected, skilled and academically brilliant minded junior cueists from across the United States were just in Vegas competing in an action packed week of billiards. A few miles south of the Vegas strip the Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) had presented and concluded the 29th Annual Junior National 9-Ball Championships. This challenging co-event was held Wednesday-Saturday August 2nd- 5th, 2017, having returned to the family friendly South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa in Las Vegas, Nevada. Showcased at one end of the Billiard Congress of America (BCA) Billiard & Home Leisure Expo was the BEF junior national’s arena. The competition area boasted 20 pro 9-foot Diamond tables. This junior event is the only opportunity for U.S. billiard studentathletes to qualify to compete at the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) World Junior 9-Ball Championships being held this year Oct 31st – Nov. 5th, 2017 in Moscow, Russia. On Tuesday, the registration process was in full motion with the noise and bustle of last minute preparations for the tournament and expo grand openings. Eventually the fun night ended with all the pros/junior teams converging to the semi-finals. 1st Place was Skyler Woodward & Trenton White, 2nd Place Nick

Varner & Justin Toye, 3rd Place Loree Jon Hasson & Xavier Hultze, 4th Place Beau Runningen & Spencer Ladin. On Friday night before the finals, the packed banquet night was held. The banquet comfortably seated all juniors, family members, pros, sponsors, and BEF staff and volunteers to enjoy a great meal, laughs, heartfelt speeches, recognitions, remembrance, awards and honors. Each year players are nominated by their peers at the junior nationals to recognize sportsmanship on and off the table. This special award is in remembrance and recognition of one of BEF’s alumni’s, Brendan Crockett, who was more than just a talented young player taken early from life. Brendan grew from an eager teen-ager to an intelligent, charming gentleman with true character and humility. His humor, willingness to work hard and ability to lead have been an important part of our programs. The 2017 Brendan Crockett Character Award Recipients are: Eric Roberts from Crossville, Tennessee and Eliana Rodriguez from Brooklyn, New York. All medalists in the 18UB & 18UG divisions along with the gold and silver medalists from the 14UG & 14UB divisions have been nominated for the 2017 WPA World Junior 9-Ball Championships October 31st to November 5th in Moscow, Russia. This junior national was a year of competitive upsets. A trio of past back-toback champions made up of Nathan Childress (14UB from North Chesterfield, VA), April “The Grinder” Larson (18UG from Bloomington, MN), and Ashley Fullerton (14UG from Lake Park, MN) all sought to become three-peat champions but fell short and all new gold medalists emerged. In the 14UG division it was also a battle to maintain the championship reign. The 14UG finals match played at 11am on Saturday spotlighted the two young quiet and upcoming players in Liu and Wolford. Both played well with Liu edging out the win with her first gold medal and Wolford proudly taking home the silver. The title of 18UB champion was newly earned this year by Austin Summers from Metropolis, IL. As always, the 14UB’s is a very competitive division with high levels of play even for that age. Tate with 2X Junior Worlds experience under his belt was at an advantage in the high- pressure match for the gold with Shultz. After the last 9-ball was pocketed for the match wins the entire five-players strong Tate family, applauded with joy as their brother was crowned the BEF 2017 14UB Gold Medal Champion and Shultz as runner-up Silver Medalist. Ruijsink conducts opening boot camp for Team USA hopefuls WITH THE 2017 MOSCONI CUP now less than four months away, American Team captain Johan Ruijsink has been holding his first training camp for possible team members at Griff’s Billiards in Las Vegas. Taking place from 12th to 16th August, it is the Dutchman’s first opportunity to take a close look at some of the players who may make up the final five to contest the 24th annual Mosconi Cup at the Mandalay Bay from 4th to 7th December. The players working out this week are Shane Van Boening, Oscar Dominquez, Billy Thorpe, Skylar Woodward, Dennis Hatch with Johnny Archer, fulfilling the role of Ruijsink’s vice-captain. With the selection procedure this year entirely down to the captain, providing at least four of the five players selected are in the top ten of the rankings which conclude in early September. “This December is going to be a massive job for the American team and I want to give ourselves every possible chance to win the Mosconi Cup. I’m looking at every player closely as the make-up of the team and their ability to gel will be of critical importance. “The line-up for 2017 is not determined yet, but I need to start the preparation, because an enormous task awaits team USA,” he concluded.
