Best of British is in Liverpool! The Liverpool Echo online recently featured our Best of British Master of Ceremonies Pete Price together with our celebrity chef Paul Askew and top billing comedian Mick Miller. Pete shared his excitement and anticipation of being a part of a major event in Singapore’s social calendar.
Heading out to Singapore with the Best of British By Pete Price
Chef Paul Askew and comedian Mick Miller are coming with me to help show what this wonderful country is all about.
I can’t believe it’s nearly that time of year again when I fly out to Singapore to host a couple of events for the Best of British – platform to show what this wonderful country is all about. Last year we took Jan Molby to represent sport. I think he is one of the best after-dinner speakers in England. We also took Philip and Tony Armstrong to show Singapore what fashion is all about. This year I am taking celebrity chef Paul Askew and comedy legend Mick Miller.
He is chef patron of the Art school restaurant which is renowned across the North West. His support and dedication to local suppliers and businesses is important to him. Callum Edge is his meat supplier, Simon Ward supplies his sea food and Claremount Farm provide produce – examples of his high quality suppliers. It is his insistence upon the use of high quality seasonal and locally sourced produce that has formed the key concept behind each dish he has created whilst often introducing elements of the dishes he enjoyed growing up with in Singapore. He is hoping to fly the produce over there for the festival.

Are you tied down by your financial advice? by David Pugh
When you go to a supermarket, would you like to pick from all the products on sale or just the supermarket’s own-branded ones?
ABOUT THE AUTHOR David Pugh has been living and working in South East Asia for four years and is responsible for The Fry Group’s activities in the region. David specialises in inheritance tax strategy, pension planning and portfolio management. He is a regular contributor of financial scenario articles for the Financial Times, an Associate of the Institute of Financial Planning and a Board Member of the British Chamber of Commerce, Singapore.
There’s a very strong chance that you would want the full choice of food and drinks in the store, rather than be restricted to supermarket-own brands. While being given such a limited choice may sound a bizarre scenario, this arrangement actually exists in the world of financial advice. Tied agents (normally affiliated to insurance companies and banks) can only sell financial products from the company they represent. Compare this to an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA) who can offer any financial product (be it a pension, investment fund, mortgage etc) from across the whole market without any restrictions. Which one would you rather choose? Shop around While the answer might be straightforward enough, many tied agents are successful because people are often busy or can be quite lazy by not bothering to shop around, do their research or ask the right questions – such as “can you offer me the best products across the industry?” In fairness, some tied agents are good at their job and offer decent advice. The problem is they can only offer a limited product range. In contrast, Independent Financial Advisers (IFAs) can recommend the best pension, investment fund or solution from across the whole market without being restricted to only one company’s products. IFAs are fiercely proud of their independent status and it is hard to see so many people still buying financial products through a tied agent. This is even more bizarre in today’s world where there is so much choice for the consumer. However, the biggest danger is that by choosing a tied agent, you could end up with the wrong products. The full view Of course, tied agents will argue they are giving good professional advice and are trained properly to industry standards just like IFAs. They will even claim dealing with one system which they understand very well means they can spend more time meeting clients’ needs. But this still avoids the fact they can only offer one view of the market when a client deserves to see it from 360 degrees. Some insurance companies do have a guarantee that if one of their tied agents has offered the wrong product or wrong advice, it will provide compensation and put the client back in the right position. But this is a time-consuming hassle for a client, they could miss out on a market upswing and could easily argue they should have been given the best products and advice in the first place. Another problem is when it comes to products, most tied agents offer much the same these days so there is even less choice. And if they can’t offer the best product for a particular customer, it is unlikely they will admit that and tell a customer to go elsewhere. So in a supermarket would you want the choice of just one cereal, or a whole aisle’s worth? In reality, a tied agent is more likely to make the foot fit the shoe, rather than the other way round. MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Member in the Spotlight To be in conjunction with the SG50 Celebration, for this issue’s Member in the Spotlight feature, we are pleased to have one of Singapore’s best known personality, Mr Gurmit Singh. Gurmit was often seen on the television hosting variety shows as well as acting. Best known for his role as “Phua Chu Kang” in the Singlishbased sitcom, Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd, the role had made Gurmit a popular icon striking the hearts of many Singaporeans. Gurmit is also an active member who frequents the club when he is off-screen. In this issue of Member in the Spotlight feature, we will get a glimpse of Mr Gurmit Singh’s life beyond the screen. A glimpse of his professional life... What is most rewarding about your career as an artiste?
Some artiste would say the awards and to a certain extent, that is true because the awards give you recognition and more importantly, they verify if what you are doing as an artiste is well-received (this of course only true if the awards are not rigged). But more importantly, it is when someone comes up to me and say they enjoyed my show and generally give positive feedback. That is when I have the most unbiased and unsolicited report given to me which will equate to being honest and true.
Being a multi-talented artiste as an actor, host and comedy performer, what were the roles you had enjoyed acting as the most? And why? I have been blessed to be part of many projects that I have enjoyed in the capacity of actor or host. I truly enjoyed playing the role of Phua Chu Kang (PCK). Actually, I still am requested to perform for one hour shows at private company parties even though the PCK show has been off air for 8 years now! He is really fun to play because he really gets away with anything. Even when he is insulting people, they find it funny. This character really transcends all ages and races and has been accepted so kindly by all walks of life. And to this end, I am truly grateful that he has been now immortalised as a figurine in Madam Tussauds Singapore, in Sentosa.
I also enjoyed hosting my own talk show, Tonight with Gurmit. It was really nerve wrecking to do this weekly show but what was really rewarding was the chance to meet different stars each week. Some of whom impacted me as they showed the “non celebratory” side of themselves to me.
Any advice you would give to upcoming artistes?
One advice - Work hard and be teachable . A lot of new artistes come into the industry thinking it is all walk in the park with all glamour and no work. On the contrary, you really have to put in the hours and heart into it so that you stand out from the rest and get noticed, not by the industry makers but by the audience because, ultimately, the real boss of the artiste, is the audience.
A glimpse of his life beyond the screen… What do you usually do when you are off-screen?
I have interests in many things so when I am off screen, I could be doing a variety of things - playing computer games, going to the movies with family, chilling with family, going to the gym, holidays, dates with my wife, photography, and the list goes on and on! Haha!
What attracted you and your family to the British Club?
The proximity to Nature. Everywhere I turn around, I see greenery and nature. The Club is a very family oriented place. The Indian food is one of the most authentic I have tasted. Many a times I visit some Indian restaurant and get disappointed because the recipe has been “watered down” to suit the masses.
What aspects / activities of the club do you and your family enjoy the most?
We enjoy the pool, the billiard table, the bingo, the quiz nights, and did I mention the Indian food? :-)

ROCLAND Esta te - CHOCOLATE BOX WINE & GOURMET DINNER Friday, 31 July 2015
$98.00+ Member • $108.00+ Guest In 1999, Franc Rocca and family converted a former cow paddock into a state-of-the-art winery, to be known as Rocland Estate. The easy going nature inherited from the Rocca family’s European background, together with an experienced wine-making team, combines to produce food friendly, approachable wines from Rocland’s vineyards and surrounding contracted vineyards. Rocland Estate produces a number of wine ranges including Rocland Estate, Chocolate Box, Duck Duck Goose, Ass Kisser and most recently Petite Rocland. One of the smaller wine producers in the Barossa Valley, Rocland Estate prides itself on producing good quality, uniquely labelled wines. In the James Halliday 2012 Wine Companion, Rocland Estate was the only South Australian winery to be awarded a Top 10 placing in ‘The Best of the Best’ Dark Horse Wineries of 2012. Rocland Estate believes great wine is made from the vines, sun, rain and rich earth. We are happy to have Mr Michael Sawyer representing Rocland Estate. Michael has worked closely with Franc Rocca at Rocland Estate in the Barossa on some great wine-making projects since 2009 and has helped created some great wines out of the Rocland stable including Bulls & Roses, Chocolate Box and many other great wines. Michael receives a host of accolades, winning a number of silver and bronze medals at the International Wine Challenge in 2007, 2008 and 2009. These awards were recently highlighted by James Halliday commending Michael on his experience, skill and winemaking talents in the annual Wine Companion. SPORTS & FITNESS SQuash:
Oldies Rule (but youngsters are cool) By The Boaster Enthusiastic readers may have noticed over the last couple of years the occasional reference to the demographic timebomb ticking away at the squash courts. If any world leaders want some advice on dealing with a greying population, they should simply come to one of our social sessions on Tuesday and Thursday nights and Saturday afternoons. Has this stopped the section thriving? Not at all. We have simply adapted. As well as the annual Masters’ (over 45) knock-out tournament we now run a Grand Masters’ event for over 55s. Both are in full swing now with finals to be played in May – see the match report below.
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) was restarted in April. The LHC works by accelerating tiny, electrically-charged sub-atomic particles to speeds close to that of light in an enclosed space, and then smashing them together to release a stream of high-energy fragments which can be examined for clues about the very nature of the universe and where we come from. The first semi-final of the Masters’ squash knock-out was also played in April. Craig and Ben weigh rather more than a pair of protons (215kg between them) but they too accelerated to speeds close to that of light in an enclosed space when they took to court one in a highly charged match to decide who would make it to the final. They too smashed together from time to time, releasing a stream of high-energy grunting and expletives which could be examined for clues as to which way the match was going. In the end, it was Craig who prevailed and he is now waiting to see who he will play to decide the 2015 champion (and possibly locate a Higgs boson or two).
Staying with the more mature members of the section, Matt Gyde’s Friday Night Heroes - the section’s SSRA veterans’ league squad - have continued their good form and still have a shot at a place in the end-of-season playoff at the time of writing, though Matt sometimes has to work hard to convince his team that squash is a better idea than a pair of slippers and a Downton Abbey box set on a Friday night. While the more mature members of the squash section have been busy playing, they have also been working on the youngsters – not just those who haven’t quite made it to 45, but a whole new generation. “Try Squash” events are planned for 3 Saturdays in June and we hope to arrange a mini-camp later in the summer for those who want to give it a proper go. Watch this space.

SPORTS & FITNESS SWIMMING:
Section Report By Alex Smillie
With the buzz of the day, there was tension, nerves and excitement but most importantly there were medals! Why, everyone loves a bit of bling! The British Club Masters team managed to take home 13 gold, 13 silver and 7 bronze medals collectively – great work guys! Events included both men and women 25m and 50m Freestyle, Breastroke, Backstroke and Butterfly along with men and women Individual Medley races and relays.
As usual, the swimming section of the British Club is continuing to go from strength to strength. Recently the British Club Masters section took the limelight in the South East Asia Pacific (SEAP) Singapore Short Course Competition. The meet took place in the Singapore Swimming Club at Tanjong Rhu Road on Saturday, 18th April 2015. It was a fabulous event that brought together 12 swimming teams (clubs and corporate teams) from across Singapore to compete with each other. The main ethos of the SEAP meet was to bring together a ‘community of swimmers’ regardless of age but who all share a common passion in swimming. For the British Club Masters, it was a fantastic way in which to showcase all the hard work they had put into training with Coach Roland and to come together collectively as a team to represent the British club.
THE BRITISH CLUB
For further information and results on the meet you can visit the webpage www.seapmasters.org. The physical and mental benefits of swimming have been well documented but putting this training exercise into competitive practice forces ourselves outside of our comfort zone and allows us to push our limits in an exciting and invigorating way. The adrenaline and excitement from a race stays with you for quite some time! The sharing of these experiences also extends to the formation and continuation of friendships, which I believe to be an important aspect of enjoying life in Singapore. British Club Masters training sessions are on 6 days a week (Monday to Saturday) either in the morning or evening. If you would like to improve your stroke and/or get involved with these adrenaline-fuelled fun events, please come and try out a session with Coach Roland. The British Club masters are now getting ready for their next meet – we’ll keep you posted on their performance!

GOLF SECTION HAPPENINGS By Nic Merrow-Smith Golf Section News
Graeme and Mike say “see you at Sentosa,” as they scoot over the 10th’s water hazard on the SICC Sime Course.
April Medal
By the time this article reaches you, the Club Championship will be upon us on Thursday, 25th June. For the 3rd straight year, the Club Championship will be staged at the highly acclaimed Sentosa Golf Club Serapong Course where we had a magnificent day last year with 10 flights, fine weather, worthy champions, team challenges and lots of prizes. Feedback from every angle was very encouraging. So for the SG 50 Year, can we achieve a field of 50 or more golfers? There is one change to the logistics this year as we look to build a more inclusive section. We will return to the British Club after the game for the Dinner of Champions where your families, friends and anyone who couldn’t get away from the office may join us in the celebration.
Results & Standings April Medal Venue: SICC, Sime Course Results; Match Abandoned
ORDER OF MERIT - MARCH 2015
Graeme Jacombs is poised to find the centre of the 12th fairway.
Mike Wanklin let’s one rip to find the centre of the 12th fairway.
For the April Medal, we returned to the Singapore Island Country Club’s Bukit location. The facilities have been nicely renovated since our last visit which was fortunate as we spent more time in the bar than on the course. With the constant threat of lightning, we were on and off the course like Tiger Wood on a bad day. With our golfers accusing the monkeys of lifting their balls from the fairway in their absence, we agreed to abandon the medal having completed 9 holes. We will rearrange the medal, probably in July. Acknowledgements go to John Bussell who claimed the longest drive, Oliver Stoffel and Mike Wanklin for nearest the pins; prizes will be rolled over.
JCC Monday Night League I see our efforts to secure a top three spot in the Monday Night league are dwindling. It really makes a difference when we can get out a full compliment of 4 players on the night. So on behalf of the section, let’s encourage each of the team to complete those 5 games or so - it’s never too late to challenge.

A Whole Load of Balls Big Win for the Big Boys
By Louise Wood
Pipped to the Post
The BC Men’s STA team fought off tough competition to win the prestigious 2015 Inter-club Singles (B Grade) title. The 14-stong team are creamed from the top players in the club and include a number of club champions. Not only did they bring home the trophy but they remained unbeaten through the group matches. The team now moves on to compete at A Grade next season and Captain David Brown says that presents a whole different set of challenges, “Many of the younger coaches around the island turn out in the A division. Having said that it’s a great opportunity to play against top class opposition and who knows, there may be the odd heroic victory”.
BC Court Appeal - 2nd place in WITS B Div
Three of our WITS ladies teams narrowly missed out on first place in their respective divisions in a season which not only saw some great tennis but also nail-biting finales. Congratulations to BC Sweet Shots (D Div), BC Court Appeal (B Div) and BC Swing Out Sisters (Alpha Div) for bringing home 2nd place. Next time ladies! RECIPROCAL CLUB SPOTLIGHT
The Wellesley Club Wellington, New Zealand
The Wellesley Club is named after Arthur Wellesley, formally known as the Duke of Wellington. One of the principal towns of the new colony was named after him. The Duke was a sponsor of the New Zealand Company. In 1891 when a group of Wellington businessmen decided to establish a gentlemen’s club, they chose the name Wellesley for its historical connections with the city. The building has been designated a grade 1 Heritage Building by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust. Built in the grand tradition of London’s Pall Mall Clubs, it is considered one of the finest examples of neo-Georgian architecture in Wellington. The Wellesley Club is a landmark building near the heart of the city’s financial district. It occupies a prominent street corner and it possesses a distinguished architectural character. In 1997, a large portion of the building was lovingly restored as a boutique deluxe hotel. Nestled in the heart of the Lambton Quarter, the Wellesley Boutique Hotel is an oasis of calm and relaxation. We are located in the centre of the business hub and a short walk away from superb dining, shopping and major sports and events venues. Relax and unwind while you explore the coolest little capital in the world. With so much to see in Wellington city, there’s no better place to stay than our centrally-located boutique hotel. Whether you are travelling for business, leisure, or a romantic escape, we have a room to suit your needs. Each room is individually styled and features beautiful neo-Georgian furnishings and decor. So comfortable, you’ll never want to leave. And start your day the right way with a delicious breakfast, enjoy a satisfying lunch or simply a cup of great coffee with one of our scrumptious in-house baked treats. The 1815 Café & Bar was once the home of a private club and its old world architecture now provides a calming escape. It’s also a great place to entertain your guests in the evening for dinner or drinks.
