MISSION

To be the leading international Club in Singapore, exceeding the expectations of our Members and their families.

Dear Members,

In the most joyous of seasons, I want to take the opportunity to wish everyone a safe and relaxing Christmas break. Let’s try to forget the pandemic and take this time to recharge ourselves physically and mentally. In a bit of welcome good news, the recent announcement of additional VTL lanes along with children under 12 being able to travel with their parents may enable some families to connect again this Christmas. If not, we can still find ways to reconnect with them virtually over the festive season.

The pandemic and the ensuing restrictions have been hard on us all and have affected our mental well-being in different ways. During these times, I am grateful to have the article from “Thrive! with Kim” in this issue, which focuses on coping with isolation and feeling homesick during the holiday season. If you are feeling down, Kim has shared some tips on how to manage and cope.

The shift towards endemic living should not dampen our festive moods. There is much to do at the Club, for both children and adults. Keep the little ones busy with our Christmas craft kits or sign them up for a junior sports section to learn a new skill and make new connections.

For yourself, pick up a reading hobby by heading down to the library, which was been recently reorganised, or sign up for the various fitness lessons at the Sports Centre.

Dive into our festive supplement to find the booking form for the many festivities which start from Christmas Eve to New Year’s Eve, and you may already start placing your orders for Christmas roasts, log cakes and many more!

On a more serious note, I would like to remind all members to adhere to the safe management measures which include wearing of masks in public places and cooperating with our staff by presenting your fully vaccinated status before dining-in. As the regulations are subject to change, you may refer to the website for regular updates.

Lastly, I wish you and your family nothing but the best this holiday season. May your holidays sparkle with joy and laughter!

Dear Members,

Feels like time flew by as fast as 2020. It was not too long ago that the Club was preparing for the Summer holidays and now it’s time for the most wonderful time of the year. I would like to start by expressing my sincere appreciation to all members who have been very cooperative with the many changes of COVID restrictions, and keeping the Club safe for members, staff and guests.

We have gone through several development projects this year including the renovation of the Treetops Suite, repainting of the whole Club’s building inside and out, upgrading of the tennis courts and receiving new sun lounges and poolside furniture. In just a year, I must say that the look of the Club has changed tremendously! I look forward to working closely with the Development Committee in the year ahead as we work on more exciting new upgrading projects.

Check out the amazing menus put together by our Chefs in the festive supplement, as we get together with our families to

celebrate Christmas and prepare for the New Year (hopefully it will be a better one with travel involved!). Stock up on your holiday booze by taking advantage of the exclusive wine promotions at the Windsor Shop, and wind down at Windsor Arms with your friends over a bottle of the month.

Although we are unable to have the usual festive celebrations at the Club, we can still make this a merry occasion while staying safe and healthy. Follow us on our social media platforms and subscribe to our digital newsletters for the latest activities and updates.

I wish you and your loved ones a very Merry Christmas and all the best for 2022.

A wonderful and humorous description of life in Singapore and South East Asia.

Both the author's parents, in her words, are direct descendants from two separate Royal Houses from Indonesia. The entire Court from both those Houses, were exiled to Ceylon for not succumbing to the Dutch Masters. The author's Father was from a Royal House in Batawie (Batavia to the Dutch) and her Mother is from a Royal House from one of the Sultanates in Sumatra. Their descendants formed the CeylonMalay Community in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). They subsequently ended up in Singapore where the book takes place.

Highly recommended! Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 June 2021

An eloquent and entertaining account of a memorable childhood in Singapore during the waning years of British colonial rule. The author writes with wit and style about the remarkable history and daily lives of her distinguished family and their characterful cast of household staff.

Her writing is imbued with a generous seasoning of the lively vocabulary and expressions of Singaporean English - Singlish.

She paints authentic and atmospheric word pictures, accompanied by evocative illustrations, of aspects of Singapore that have all but disappeared from the modern metropolis of today.

RESTORING NATURE THROUGH TREE PLANTING

In compensation for the tress that we had to fell near the Sports Centre, we planted two Dillenia indica L and two Planchonella Obovata trees along the driveway towards the main building.

Our Club President, Stephen Fulton, and Chairman of the Sustainability Committee, Rajesh Chhabara, took part in the tree planting process. The Club’s lush greenery is what makes us special, try spotting the new trees when you are on your way up!

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Member in the Spotlight is a section in the Magazine where members can introduce themselves, share their family, hobbies and must-have dish in the Club. In this issue, find out all about Dominic Jones as he shares about his family, hobbies and how he has been coping with the pandemic.

What made you join the British Club?

Before moving to Singapore, our family lived in Hong Kong and we were active members of the Ladies Recreational Club. When we moved to Singapore, we looked for a club that had the same ambience and hospitality. The British Club ticked all the boxes.

Share with us a little about your family and yourself.

I am a proud Welshman and who, for my sins, I married an Australian lady. We have a lovely teenage daughter (Isabella) who was born in Hong Kong. We also brought over a rescue dog who is a massive part of our family and whilst here in Singapore we have also adopted a cat.

We do enjoy outdoor activities and keeping fit whether it is hiking, running or swimming. We love to get to Sentosa as much as possible so we can relax at the beach and get some sea breeze.

What is your favourite thing to do at the Club?

For me, pre-COVID I used to enjoy getting to the club early to use the gym and to get some laps in the pool. Post-COVID, I get great pleasure from just being able to come to the club and chill at the Verandah Café.

My wife gets great pleasure from chilling by the pool whenever possible and we also enjoy the deal on the Piper Champagne from the Windsor shop! J

Prior to COVID, our daughter enjoyed Karate and is looking forward it’s return this when possible. She also loves the pool and is in the swimming section so that she keeps fit and healthy.

Tell us a bit about your work.

I am a Senior Field Service Representative for Airbus. It is my job to be embedded within an airline for a number of years to be their focal point for all things Airbus. Whether it is technical, operational, training, new deliveries and entries in to service. Whatever it may be, I am the first person they come to for assistance to ensure they get the right support from the many thousands of people around the world that work in Airbus and that we keep the airline fleet in the air.

If you have to choose one dish from the Club to eat for the rest of your life, what would that be and why?

That’s a hard one… Up until recently and the changes in the pizza menu I would always order the Calzone. If that was still available, then for sure it’s my dish for life. Other than that, it has to be the Bangers and Mash from the Windsor Arms.

Finally, tell us something interesting about yourself.

Ever since I can remember, I have been a fan of James Bond and watches. To this end I have managed to become a collector of watches and especially the Omega brand that are used in the JB movies. To date, I have collected 12 of the watches that are issued when there is a new JB movie released.

Also, since the start of the COVID pandemic, I have made a pledge to push myself out of my comfort zone. So far I have completed a course in how to trade in the various stock markets, completed a diploma in Aviation Leasing and Finance from the Law Society of Ireland. I am currently training to see if I can complete a Half Marathon

and finally I have hired a PT instructor (due to COVID restrictions) to push myself further to be as fit as possible.

MISSING TOWELS

Pool and hand towels are provided to all members when they visit the Club to use the pool or gym.

Last month, the Club lost 300 towels which amounted to a loss of $2,000.

We strongly appeal to all members to act responsibly and return the towels by placing it in the laundry bins provided.

Thank you for your cooperation.

GET YOUR LITERATURE FIX AT THE CLUB LIBRARY

The British Club library has a great collection of popular reads, selected and donated by our members. The library had been voluntarily reorganized by our lovely member, Paula Sivanandan. It is now even easier to find your next book as the collection has been arranged according to genres, just like your favourite book shop.

There is a large collection of mystery and thrillers, featuring award-winning writers such as Dan Brown, Lee Child, Tom Clancy or Ian Rankin. Our historical fiction collection includes Ken Follett and Bernard Cornwell. For fans of romantic fiction, we have the likes of Jodi Picoult, Maeve Binchy and Nora Roberts, and fans of the humour category can enjoy stalwarts Colin Bateman, Jeremy Clarkson and Ben Elton.

This month we are featuring ‘booksto-screens’ titles. Stop by to check out the novel that inspired your favourite movies or television shows. To borrow a book, simply sign it out, then return it to the Main Reception or leave it in the basket in the library.

Find out more about the lady behind the books

Since returning to Singapore, Paula has been a school librarian for years. She loves helping children, the most reluctant readers, find books to inspire them. Read on to find out about her family, hobbies and more.

“My Husband, Sanjay grew up near Holland Road and we’ve been back in Singapore for 13 years now. We met in the UK, I’m originally from Edinburgh, then travelled the world for work, living in KL, Bangkok, US and Hong Kong. Our two daughters are now grown up and currently living in the UK and USA.

We visited the Club with friends previously, and were totally won over by the friendly staff and decided to become a member. Over the years, the Club just continues to improve and it’s been a godsend during COVID. A huge thank you to everyone for working to keep the Club safe and welcoming this past year.

I love catching up with the ladies of the Craft Section. We meet every Tuesday to chat, have lunch and manage some sewing, crochet or knitting along the way. It’s a very friendly group and we’re all very much still learning and sharing with each other. It’s always lovely to have new members join our group and you can get more information here. Since joining the Craft Section a few years back, I’ve been inspired to take up quilting and now offer sewing classes from beginners to more advanced.

As a vegetarian, I sometimes face a little difficulty finding food options. I’ve recently discovered that the Chefs at Verandah Café will make a vegetarian Nasi Goreng upon request, and it’s absolutely delicious!”

THINKING OF STARTING UP A BUSINESS?

Thinking of starting up a business?

One of our members, Sabrina Viegas, who was formerly doing marketing at Diageo and Yum Brands, has set up her own business to help startups. Whether you are trying to get your business off the ground or thinking of setting up your next business as a side hustle, you may approach her to find out how you can transition to achieve your full-time dream job. We spoke to Sabrina to find out more about what she does, read on to find out more.

What inspired you to start this business?

Once I heard from a friend who said “Every time we move countries, my husband moves collecting winnings [promotion, new job, etc.] and I move collecting losses as everything I did/ invest in that country stays in that country. Moving for me means I need to start all over again”

This really touched me – there are so many talented people out there that should be able to establish their own business and carry it with them when they move.

BMS was born on the back of my 18+ years of experience in Digital Marketing and Business Development with a desire to reignite these buried ambitions and help people to translate their dreams into solid business propositions that they can carry with them wherever they go.

What have you enjoyed most about starting your own company?

Starting my own venture has been extremely fulfilling – the ability to mold a long-term dream into the shape (and form) of a business is priceless. However, I find, the most rewarding part is to be able to positively impact peoples’ lives by helping them rediscover their purpose via establishing their own business.

What kind of services do you offer?

We have a suite of options tailored to different stages of maturity of the business.

• StartUp Packages - for clients with a basic concept, but no idea how to implement it (put it in action)

• Boost Your Business – for clients with an established business but who require help in getting noticed, acquiring more clients or simply need a whole new marketing and digital strategy to grow.

• Social Media Intelligence – for clients who want to become more savvy with exploiting the full potential of social media to maximize the exposure of their business

• Marketing Mentoring – This is a great way to learn all marketing and social media techniques & strategies to continuously apply as your business evolves

For all packages see: https://www.bms-asia.org/services

How can you tell if an idea for a business is worth pursuing?

Theoretically, there is not such a thing as “a bad idea”. Some ideas are simply more straightforward to implement, whilst others need more time to mold into a successful business. Our process is simple and welcoming. We start with a free consultation to understand what the client wants to pursue, which will lead us to suggest the most appropriate strategic approach.

We will look at what the client wants to achieve and how (i.e. online business that she/he can operate from wherever they are next, acquire more clients, reshape the marketing strategy with minimum investment)

For example, some of our clients have achieved a significant sales boost with a simple reshape of their social media channels, whilst we helped others with their brand positioning, logo, website and some clients want to make a leap from corporate to own their businesses.

What advice would you give to members who are trying to become an entrepreneur?

Start now! Start with what you have. If you wait for the right time to start your business, you will wait forever. My main take-home message is what you do today can improve all your tomorrows!

We would be delighted to hear your ideas and hopefully be able to help positively impact your future business!

WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR LOCKDOWN SAVINGS?

Despite many households being hit hard by Covid-19, for some the pandemic has offered the opportunity to accumulate wealth and save significant amounts. Huw Wedlock, Director of The Fry Group’s Singapore office, looks at the options if you’ve been fortunate enough to boost your savings during lockdown.

The first consideration is how old you are. Depending on your stage of life, it’s likely that you’ll have different priorities.

The middle ages and beyond

If you’re older, perhaps hitting middle age or above, it’s best to focus on repaying debt if you have any. If not, you can opt to add to your retirement savings, perhaps making lump sum payments into your pension or other

investments. For some the additional capital might give the opportunity to explore new investment strategies, considering new approaches such as ESG investing. Extra funds also mean you can enjoy some spending, safe in the knowledge that you’ll be helping support the much needed economic recovery.

One clear benefit of the last 18 months is that many have seen their property wealth grow substantially. This creates flexibility; you could downsize if you are keen to realise some of that increase or need some capital, or upsize if you want more room. Don’t forget that if you’ve seen an increase in your home’s value, and therefore the overall value of your estate, you might need to consider an update to your estate plans, or at least a review of the impact of Inheritance Tax.

For those keen to think about long-term aspects, there’s the opportunity to make a gift to younger generations, perhaps in the form of a lump sum payment to help children or grandchildren take their first steps on the property ladder, or to establish their own nest eggs.

A younger perspective

If you’re below the age of 40, and created some savings – you now have a good opportunity to create a solid future financial plan.

The first step is to ensure you have an emergency fund – a good rule of thumb is easy access to the equivalent of six months income. The issue with the current situation is that you might only

have the option of a low interest account. Alternatively you can consider buying property, although again saving for a deposit might mean you only have low interest cash account options. If you do already own a home it might be worth considering an offset mortgage. This enables you to overpay on your monthly mortgage payments, creating a financial cushion for future years. This approach can help you pay off your mortgage early, whilst ensuring that the capital stays available if needed in an emergency.

It’s prudent, however early on you are in your career, to consider retirement plans and get a pension or investment option set up which you can contribute to over the years.

Another option if you’re aged 18-39 is a LISA – a Lifetime Individual Savings Account. This offers the same Income and Capital Gains Tax advantages of a regular ISA, but with an added benefit; a 25% bonus if your savings are used to purchase your first home or to contribute to your retirement. LISAs can be left as deposits in a savings account, or invested long-term using stocks and funds. They are flexible, enabling you to access funds in an emergency, and can be used until you reach the age of 50. Given their age requirements LISAs can also be useful vehicles for parents or grandparents to use to gift away additional funds.

There are lots of options dependent on your circumstances and working with an experienced financial adviser can help you make the most of your situation.

OF HOUSES AND HERITAGE

The House system has been a staple of British schooling for centuries, originating from physical boarding houses where students lived and evolving into a byword for student teams that connect age groups. Throughout this time there has always been the idea that a House is a home in itself; populated by a close-knit “family” with a unique bond. Added to that, there is a certain magic to a House, akin to Harry Potter’s sorting hat.

Tanglin Trust School’s House system dates back to 1981 when Tanglin Preparatory School, Raeburn Park School and Weyhill Preparatory School merged to form Tanglin Infant and Junior schools at Portsdown Road. Forty years on, the Tanglin House system has been unified across all three schools and each of the House names – Claymore, Cameron, Raeburn, Alexandra, Weyhill, Wessex, Winchester and Portsdown – honours a significant location in the school’s rich history.

We invite you to step inside Tanglin Houses to discover their history, character, shield and colourway.

Claymore

Endurance is a key strength. With a crossed pair of Scottish Claymore broadswords as its House icon, Claymore was where “Miss Griff” first founded the school in 1925 within the Tanglin Club’s grounds. With just five students, the school went from strength to strength, to become the Tanglin we know today. Claymore reminds us that humble beginnings can lead to extraordinary accomplishments.

Cameron

The Cameron Highlands Boarding School was opened by Miss Griff in 1934, and staff and students encountered much adversity there. In 1942, during World War II, the school was forced to close, while Miss Griff and several

colleagues were held in Changi Prison. In 1948, the Malayan Emergency brought more hardship. The fortitude and adaptability of this House sprang from its alpine surroundings, giving energy and life force for renewal.

Raeburn

Raeburn Park School was established in 1954 by Singapore Harbour Board officials who were concerned about the educational provision for non-service expatriate children. In 1972, the school moved to Alexandra Park, and later came under the management of Tanglin Trust Ltd. The lightning flash of Raeburn House references Singapore’s tropical climate and symbolises innovation and foresight, while the Raeburn Blue evokes the prowess of a storm and the calm that comes before and after.

Alexandra

Alexandra Park was the scene of bitter fighting during World War II. In 1974 Alexandra Park became the home of Winchester Nursery, managed by Tanglin Trust School Ltd. The flaming sun of this House symbolises the enthusiasm, imagination and creativity of children starting out on their learning journey.

Weyhill

Weyhill Preparatory School was opened in 1971 to cater to the waiting list at Tanglin Preparatory School. When Raeburn Park School moved into a neighbouring site in 1976, the two schools joined forces. This collaboration was fully realised in 1981 when all three schools amalgamated to form Tanglin Infant and Junior schools. The flaming torch symbolises connection across communities, while the Weyhill Blue represents clarity of thought.

The military influences come from the Wessex Estate area where Tanglin Trust School is now located on Portsdown Road. The lush greenery of the site is punctuated by clusters of black and white houses, and blocks of walk-up apartments where the British Army were once garrisoned. The Wessex Maroon reflects the respect, surety and positivity found in this House.

Winchester

Winchester School Nursery was opened in 1976 and managed by Tanglin Trust Ltd. Situated in the idyll of Alexandra Park, for 20 years, Winchester gave its children a bridge between home and the bigger school. When a dedicated Nursery unit was opened alongside Tanglin Infant and Junior schools on Portsdown Road, Tanglin Trust School was born. The Winchester Purple combines the calm stability of blue and the energy of red; ingredients that drive curiosity and a lifelong love of learning, cornerstones of a Tanglin education today.

Portsdown

Portsdown Road links the old-world charm of Wessex Estate to the onenorth area: Singapore’s biomedical, media and technology hub. Portsdown’s physical connection between the republic’s heritage and its future mirrors Tanglin’s journey and reflects the holistic approach of this House. The iconic Banyan tree that still sits on the current school site was the inspiration for the symbol. The Portsdown Green can be found in the hue of its leaves; symbolising growth, harmony and balance – a community of learners who nurture and challenge in equal measure.”

HOW TO HANDLE THE HOLIDAY SEASON WHEN YOU’RE FAR FROM HOME

How do you handle the holidays when you’re not where you want to be?

Even with travel lanes slowly opening up between Singapore and many other countries, the reality for most expats is that this coming festive season will (yet again!) be spent away from the embrace of family and close friends. At times like this, you may be dealing with amplified feelings of isolation, homesickness, longing, and loneliness. These emotions are natural and understandable.

So, how do you cope when circumstances keep you away from the traditional family gathering at holiday time?

1. Acknowledge the significance

‘Missing out’ on special events is an inherent part of expat life and it can be easy to dismiss the impact a special holiday can have on the intensity of your emotions. But that one date on a calendar can make an enormous

difference. It is wise to acknowledge that the influence of distance is greater at this time of year, and understand that extra care will be needed to help you keep your emotional equilibrium. Be honest with yourself and others about how you feel, and commit to nurturing your well-being even more than usual.

2. Get active!

Public holidays can be a great time to catch up on much-needed rest and relaxation except when you are celebrating a major holiday away from home. A long day of ‘nothingness’ can only increase your likelihood of feeling lonely and broody. So, be prepared. Fill your day with pre-organised activities and events – catching up with friends, a fun event at the British Club, a family adventure across Singapore. In this way, you will wake with a sense of purpose, spend the day in delightful distraction and, hopefully, fall into bed exhausted. Note: spontaneity is always fun, but having a full schedule planned prior to the date will reduce the likelihood of you falling prey to loneliness-induced apathy (ie. “I can’t be bothered”).

3. Don’t emulate; formulate

As tempting as it be, resist the temptation to recreate hometown traditions. Trying to follow the same schedule, adhere to the same traditions, or cook the same food will only amplify the inevitable difference in culture, ingredients and/or weather and highlight the divide between “there” and “here”. Instead, use the opportunity to invent new, more

achievable celebrations that are fun, fulfilling, and location-friendly. In this way, you will not only negate the constant reminder that you are far from home, you will also create lifelong memories and fun anecdotes for the future (“Do you remember our Singapore Christmas when we …”).

4. Create connection

Loneliness is always the result of disconnection; a sense of being apart from others or not belonging. This sense of isolation and disconnect has only been exacerbated recently by COVID-19 restrictions. Therefore, make meaningful connection an important part of your day. Celebrate with friends that you know well or socialise with people you would like to know better. Spend time with the underprivileged of Singapore, bond with your immediate family, or simply get out and consciously connect with nature. Gift yourself the feeling of valuing something or someone outside of yourself, and being valued in return.

5. Choose happiness

No external factor can ever “make” you feel good about the day; nobody around you is responsible for your happiness or enjoyment. Therefore, it’s vital for your own well-being that you practice acceptance and gratitude to the best of your ability. Sure, you may experience moments of sadness or isolation over the holiday period, but if you make a conscious effort to be grateful for what you have (however small, insignificant or inane) you will find always have a foundation of happiness to return to. These special holidays are about celebration – so choose to celebrate the day, your life, those around you, and your amazing self.

FOOTBALL: BCFC - ready for action!

Pleased to report that the football section athletes were able to return temporarily to training, and left a lasting impression on the British Club Marketing team during a Turf City filming session for inclusion within a new Sports Section promotional video.

Club stalwart, Rich English, acted as spokesperson and provided a compelling overview of section activities and how these have enriched his experience of being a British Club member.

On the pitch, Patrick Mansfield demonstrated the roaming forward role in a 3v2 session, something that he has perfected through years of playing in false 7, 9 and 11 positions

The 3v2 format requires a more strategic approach,” says Patrick. “Whilst the 3 have a numerical advantage, the 2 can shoot from anywhere on a fast counter or from long range if the 3 push up too far.” Patrick is a Leicester City fan…

Over recent months we have had to say ‘au revoir, bon voyage et mange toute’ to long serving members Paul Smith, Steve Hodge, Andy Donnelly, Xander Friedlander and James Leonard.

Whilst we were sick as parrots to see them depart, it was heart-warming to note that a number quickly settled into BCFC Exiles life and joined a recent golf weekend at Celtic Manor.

Clearly, none of the focused concentration previously displayed on the Singapore pitches has been lost, with ‘Silver Fox’ James Morris emerging from the shadows to claim the trophy. Who says you’ll never win anything with the BCFC?

On a similar theme, and with apologies to those of a sensitive disposition, a group of Exiles also undertook a 170-mile ‘Up North’ cycle ride from Morecambe to Bridlington.

Whilst there are several versions of what happened, Nick Challoner clearly managed to upset Garry Annand by grabbing his bike from the ‘swim to cycle’ transition area outside the local pub!

September marked an important milestone and a huge celebration for the Squash Section as we honoured our first septuagenarian: Keith Carpenter. Away from the court, Dr Keith, formerly Executive Director at the Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences (ICES) at Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) refuses to fully retire, by continuing to work part time with A*STAR and on other consultancy projects.

The other thing he refuses to retire from is, of course, the great game of Squash! Defying all the doctors’ advice, you’ll still find Keith running around the squash courts twice a week! OK, so I know what you’re thinking; he probably just plays a gentle back-court game, right?

SQUASH: 70 not out

No way! This remarkably fit and skillful man is happy to take on section members half his age and less . . . and beat them with great movement, a surgeon’s touch and ruthless attitude!

Keith is also the man we have relied upon for over a decade to run our monthly handicap competitions and the rankings we use for them. They are a highlight of the month for the whole section – even more so recently with no opportunity for external fixtures - and so in September, we decided to arrange an extra afternoon competition in his name. With the squash finished and the sun setting at Scores Bar, we toasted Keith and wished him many happy returns -- forehand and backhand returns of course!

And finally, his 70th birthday was the ideal opportunity to also present him with the highest honour our section has to offer: The British Club Squash Section “Friend for Life” Award. Thank you, Keith, for so many years of outstanding contribution, and true friendship. You’re an inspiration to us all.

Pesta Sukan Singapore Swimming Competition

2021

The British Club was well represented at the Pesta Sukan Singapore Swimming Competition 2021 with a total of 14 swimmers participating in a number of events over two weekends. It’s been a long time since we’ve been able to participate in any competitive swimming event due to the pandemic restrictions and for some of the team, it was the first ever!

Sadly with ongoing restrictions and consequently no spectators, there was a bit of a surreal atmosphere without the usual team support from the stands, so it was very courageous of everyone who participated, especially for our younger Barracuda swimmers. Notwithstanding, the British Club team walked away with an amazing haul of 12 medals in total which is testimony to the brilliant coaching we receive from Coach Alain and his team.

For Karen Kelly, it was a wonderful swan song event for the Master’s swimming winning two gold and one silver just weeks before returning back to the UK following many years as a dedicated masters’ swimmer. Across the wider team, there were personal bests aplenty plus a healthy sprinkling of medals providing a great account from the British Club team.

Well done everyone and also to all our wider families and club members for the remote support across the two weekends of events.

Derek Wallbank

Derek is a regular at our Friday Night Mixed Doubles Social, and as Senior Editor at Bloomberg, he keeps everyone up to date with all the breaking news of the moment.

1. How did you get involved with the mixed doubles social?

D: It’s hard for me to remember exactly how, but I can tell you why. I’ve been looking to get back into tennis for a long time. I played a bit in college with some friends for fun, nothing serious, but haven’t really done much since. Given my knees are dropping hints that my football days are nearing an end, I decided to take tennis up again.

About six months or so into weekly lessons, I saw that the British Club had socials. So I reached out for a spot on the Friday nights, and Kate Yu Juan invited me to swing by. Kate is the best – she keeps us organized, and makes sure everyone’s having a good time.

Honestly my biggest concern was that everyone would be just so much better than me that I wouldn’t be able to keep up. But everyone was really welcoming, and I quickly slotted in. It’s a great, friendly atmosphere where you can find folks who are happy to give you a game, but no one takes themselves too seriously. And

whatever happens on the court ends at the sports bar upstairs.

2. When you’re not on the tennis court what do you like to do in your free time?

A: My day job is as an editor for a major business news company, leading our breaking news coverage of COVID when Asia is awake. So let’s just say that “free time” is often in short supply.

When I get a free moment, I love hiking about wherever possible. My condo is right near the Alexandra Canal, and the Southern Ridges and Rail Corridor both pass somewhat close by. So I really enjoy just walking out the door and going somewhere, anywhere.

3. Dream doubles player?

D: When I was growing up I loved watching Wimbledon. My entry into tennis was around when Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras were battling it out on the grass, back when Agassi had hair (and I did too). I’ve had other men’s players I’ve loved watching over the years since then – Andy Murray for sure, and now Frances Tiafoe – but Agassi was where I started so I’d have to say him.

On the women’s side, can I go with Billie Jean King? She’s an absolute icon, on and off the court. Honestly, never mind the tennis, I’d just love to meet her and spend a couple hours listening to her tell stories about how she changed the world.

4. Favourite restaurant and meal at The British Club?

D: That really is a tough question. Credits to the Club, there really is a lot of good food here. The burgers at the Windsor Arms are quite good, as is the bangers & mash. I do love a good Eton Mess, and the Windsor Arms has a really great one. My kids love the pizza, and my wife and I often go for the Indian food too, especially the palak paneer. We really are spoilt for choice.

But honestly? I’m a pretty simple person. Just give me a shady seat at the Verandah Café on a nice breezy afternoon, when my daughter is in the pool with her swim class, and a mixed berries smoothie.

5. When the borders open up where is your dream travel destination?

D: I should start this by saying I do not do well stuck in one spot for a long time. I get a bit restless, a bit of cabin fever. So I’ve gotten through that this last year and a half by trying to see all of Singapore. And I mean all of it. We’ve been to Pulau Ubin, to Tuas, to the Southern Islands, and hawkers from Jurong to Changi. I’ve done every footstep of the Rail Corridor, all about 24km of it that’s open, from Tanjong Pagar up to Kranji.

Now if I don’t say we’re going to go see family, my family will read this and have words with me. So certainly job one is to tick those boxes, to go hug some people we’ve been doing Zooms with for far too long, both in America and the U.K. Washington D.C., Michigan, Florida, and Windsor are all on the list.

The question says dream, so let me tell you how I got through this pandemic. When things really shut down, I was surfing YouTube, and I found this channel called All the Stations. It’s a couple, Geoff and Vicki, who in 2017 decided to go to every one of the stations on Britain’s network rail. All 2,000+ of them. So I started watching as they kicked off in Penzance, into London and the commuter trains, then turning north and into the Midlands, Wales and beyond.

There’s a lot of beautiful in Britain, but he spot that struck me was Corrour. A station not reachable by road, only train, deep into Rannoch Moor in the Scottish Highlands. You know what’s there? Nothing.

Well, almost nothing. There a station house that’s also a seasonal pub, and a couple of other hikers who come in on the trains and out on the trains. But that’s it. Miles and miles of undeveloped hills and peaks and lochs and nothing else. It’s as remote as you can get in Britain. After two years in a city, I need a bit of nothing. So the plan is when things open up, to get to the U.K., take the Caledonian Sleeper up from London, hop off at Corrour, and just breathe deep in the open air.
