Dear Members,
Half a year has passed, it seems, in the blink of an eye and I hope that everyone has had a healthy and fulfilling 2019 thus far. Many have returned from a summer holiday overseas and there is much on offer at The British Club for the remainder of the year, even if that is simply the opportunity to get fit after your travels.
I would like to thank all the members who took part in the recent survey. It is very important for members to express their opinions and provide the feedback that ultimately supports the efforts of the Main Committee and the management team to improve the experience of all members. Congratulations to those who won the dining credits.
This month, on the 9th August, the club will celebrate Singapore’s 54th birthday with traditional dance

performances and fun activities. We also have the Prize Bingo Night as part of our Best of British celebrations. Play for a good cause and stand a chance to win fantastic prizes such as an Apple Watch, iPad Pro, Canon Camera and many more quality items. Proceeds from the sale of the Bingo slips will go towards supporting our charities.
Over recent years, catalyzed by extensive media exposure, we have all become amateur food critics and, in some cases, online reviewers. It has undoubtedly become a more difficult and competitive environment in which the Club must seek to please its members. However, I believe that a variety of quality food offerings in differing environments combined with the personalized service that only a club can offer should have an attraction for everyone and I therefore encourage all members to make good use of our food and beverage outlets.
In September, we welcome Mark Greenaway to the British Club. Mark has received many individual accolades as a chef. His previous 3 AA Rosette restaurant was named Best Contemporary Dining Destination in the 2017 Scottish Food Awards, with Mark winning the title of Best Chef in Edinburgh in their awards ceremony of 2018.
Mark will be our Chef in Residence at the Mountbatten Bar and Grill here in the British Club for five nights. Each night, he will be serving up a 7-course tasting menu featuring dishes from
his new restaurant, Grazing at the Waldorf Astoria in Edinburgh. On the Friday evening, he will be preparing the food for our ever-popular Wine & Gourmet dinner paired with wines from Argentina.
Over the recent months we have been focused on driving Membership sales. This is not a new thing but the significant levels of members leaving the club and leaving Singapore makes it a tough environment. Many of you will know of (or have benefitted from) the Member Get Member promotion and I encourage you all to think about introducing friends to the benefits of membership as we find that such new members often become the most supportive and frequent users of the club.
There are many more events to come but I would like to draw your attention to the final Best of British event for this year, which is The Great British Ball. This will take place on Saturday, 7 December at The Shangri-La Hotel. The Club and the British Chamber of Commerce have come together once again to bring you an evening to remember.
On behalf of the Club, I thank you for your continuous support and wish everyone a great month ahead.

LOOK FOR THE GOLD STANDARD WHEN TRANSFERRING YOUR PENSION
By Huw Wedlock, Director
For some time now, Brits have been able to access the convenience and flexibility of pension freedoms – but the protective legislation governing these freedoms is complex, with many regulatory changes occurring in the last decade.
We see a huge amount of information on moving our pensions, either transforming them into more tax-efficient formats or taking a lump sum up-front. But transferring pensions can be costly and risky – so anyone wishing to undertake a transfer is required to seek advice from a qualified UK pension specialist if their pension pot is valued at more than £30,000.
Even if this wasn’t mandatory, it’s a good idea: research has shown that on average, people who take financial advice end up with higher pension incomes than those who don’t. In their 2018 Retirement Outcomes Review, the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) found that many savers who don’t receive advice keep too much of their pension pot in cash – while moving to a mix of assets could receive a 47%-higher income over 20 years. Drawdown charges can be numerous and complex, so that choosing a provider with lower charges can boost their annual income in retirement by up to 15%.
While transferring your pension may appear to be an attractive possibility, it may not be the best option for some, including those with Defined Benefit schemes – typically employer-sponsored schemes promising a percentage of final salary as the ultimate pension benefit; valuable benefits which should not be surrendered lightly.
THE EXPAT VIEWPOINT
This issue is particularly relevant to expats who may have various pension schemes in the UK and abroad depending on their career history. As the time comes to move to another country or start the countdown to retirement, the many options available can appear both tempting and confusing. It’s difficult to decipher all the information needed to form a clear idea of what course of action will be most beneficial.
As a UK head quartered advisory firm, The Fry Group is well-placed to give expats with UK pension benefits bespoke guidance. With qualified pension specialists, we advise both on the merits of transfer and the myriad alternative options available, so you can formulate the most appropriate retirement income strategy for your personal needs.
A GOLD-CLASS SERVICE
In light of the complexity around UK pensions and the regulations involved, The Fry Group* are pleased to have been awarded the Pension Transfer Gold Standard by the Personal Finance Society in the UK. The Gold Standard is only awarded to firms that demonstrate adherence to a set of defined principles when providing advice on any pension transfer.
This means we ensure our clients are fully supported when considering their pension transfer by:
• Helping explain the implications of any pension transfer you are considering
• Recognising your objectives, needs and wants to ensure advice is focused on your individual circumstances
• Applying technical skills and knowledge appropriately
• Recommending only liquid and transparent investments
• Explaining every step of the process and all the costs involved
• Drawing attention to any conflicts of interest
• Executing efficiently on the advice required to consider a pension transfer and efficiently following through with any subsequent pension transfers
We have applied these standards throughout our 120year history, ensuring that we build long-term trusting relationships that prioritise our clients’ best interests at all times.
The Pension Transfer Gold Standard is an independent endorsement of our outstanding expertise. The Fry Group’s focus is on positive outcomes for our clients that are specific to their individual situation – giving peace of mind in a complex field of financial planning.

What you need to know about
Health in Singapore
Whether you are here on fixed term contract, an open-ended adventure or on a look-see visit, knowing a little about healthcare in Singapore will equip you with essential information should the time come when you or your loved ones need medical care.
HEALTHCARE SYSTEM IN SINGAPORE
Healthcare in Singapore is of a very high standard and comparable to any developed country, if not better. It consists of public and private hospitals and clinics. The public sector primarily serves the local residents and those who are permanent residents. As an expat, you can use these facilities but will be charged a private rate. Some expats will choose to be seen in the public sector, however there are often longer waiting times and getting an appointment quickly can be difficult. This results in many choosing the private sector instead. As an expat, it’s strongly advised that you have medical insurance to cover for both in- and out-patient medical care. Depending on the level of coverage provided by your work medical insurance, you may want to consider getting additional coverage so do read through your medical insurance policy and find out what is covered and what is excluded.
VACCINATIONS NEEDED FOR SINGAPORE
If you have had your childhood vaccinations and adult booster doses of tetanus, then no additional vaccinations are needed for living in Singapore. Depending on where your children were born, they may need some additional vaccinations, so it’s best to consult a doctor and bring along their vaccination record when you first arrive. The following are considered routine vaccinations for living in Singapore:
• Diptheria/Tetanus/Pertussis (whooping cough)
• Polio
• Haemophilus influenza Type B (Hib)
• Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR)
• Hepatitis B
• BCG (against Tuberculosis)
• Pneumococcal
A consultation with your doctor is always necessary as requirements may differ between individuals.
DISEASES TO BE AWARE OF IN SINGAPORE
Thankfully there is no malaria in Singapore, however dengue and chikungunya are two viral infections transmitted through the bite of some mosquitos. There is no vaccine against these infections, so prevention is key with measures taken to reduce mosquito bites. There is also a risk of Zika in Singapore. Although the risk is very low, if you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant, then consult your doctor for further advice. The risk of acquiring tuberculosis (TB) in Singapore is also very low, so taking into
account your health, age and occupation, a discussion with your doctor would be helpful to asses your own individual risk of acquiring this infection. Babies born in Singapore are routinely vaccinated against TB, so if your child has not been immunised and depending on his or her age, your doctor may recommend the BCG vaccination.
TRAVELLING IN ASIA
Recommended vaccines for traveling in Asia include hepatitis A, hepatitis B and typhoid. In addition, depending on which countries you plan to visit and the duration of your trip, additional vaccines against rabies, cholera and Japanese encephalitis may be advised. If you are traveling to a malariainfected area, then anti-malarials will be recommended as well. Dengue, chikungunya and zika are also prevalent in nearby Asian countries, so again mosquito bite avoidance is essential. Gastrointestinal infections are common in Asia, so taking extra pre-cautionary measures when consuming food and water is necessary. Travel kits can be purchased so that you are equipped during your travels to treat minor ailments and gastrointestinal infections. And finally don’t forget to purchase travel insurance to cover you for any medical care needed abroad and to ensure you can be medically repatriated should the need arise.
HEALTH SCREENINGS
Annual health screens are important to optimize your well being, identify conditions that are asymptomatic and to screen for certain cancers, where early detection can mean a better outcome or cure. Health screens should be tailored to your medical needs and any significant family history or risk factors you have should be taken into account during your consultation.
SUNSCREEN/WATER
Don’t forget the sunscreen! Living so close to the equator, even on overcast days, the sun’s ray can be harsh and cause sunburn. And finally stay well hydrated to avoid dehydration in Singapore’s hot and humid climate. This is particularly important for children, who are playing outdoors for prolonged periods of time and can easily forget to drink when they are having so much fun!
Despite the risk of a few ‘tropical diseases’, all in all Singapore is a safe place to live with an excellent healthcare system to serve you and your loved ones. Dr Sundus Morgan is based at IMC Katong. IMC also has clinics off Holland Road and Tanglin Road and a specialist Paediatric clinic.

For this issue of Member in the Spotlight, we are pleased to feature
Robert Lyons and family.
We find out a bit more about Robert and his cyber world.
1) What made you join the Club and how is your experience so far?
I have to give all the credit for joining The British Club to my wife, Nicole! She had visited a few times as a guest and told me about the club and the location was perfect as our two boys go to Chatsworth School, directly opposite. Once we took the initial tour of the Club, we were hooked and joined that same day. Somewhere to relax, work and play. It was a decision as much for our boys as ourselves.
The facilities available are awesome. The whole family is taking regular tennis lessons. We won’t be ready for Wimbledon any time soon, but it’s great family fun. And the boys love swimming and the Kids Club after school. For me, it’s a time to relax in the library.
2) Tell us more about yourself and your profession.
I was born in the heart of London’s West End, Kensington. About 15 years ago, I was relocated to Sydney and I met my wonderful wife, Nicole, in Kuala Lumpur. We have two gorgeous sons, James (11) and George (7). We’ve been in Singapore for 10 years and prior to that, lived in Kuala Lumpur and the UK.
I am the Senior Director of Global Customer Services for Palo Alto Networks, a Cyber Security company, headquartered in Santa Clara, California.
Our job is to stop the bad guys from hacking systems. The role covers all of Asia Pacific and Japan and as you can imagine involves travel across the region and to the USA. The team is responsible for the ongoing services and support of our customer base. It’s a fast-paced business and our customers’ security is critical to their ongoing success.
3) Could you shed some light on the cyber threats we should be aware of in today’s world of technology.
Our company vision is simple but crucial; “A world where each day is safer and more secure than the one before”. Often the first line of defence is human. Many of the adversaries trying to either steal data or disrupt organizations, first start with social engineering.
A technique where they learn as much about their target as they can through online social presence. For example, if you have an online profile that shows a passion for golf, you may one day receive an email with some exclusive golf equipment offer. It’s tempting to click the email for sure. But beware, it could be an attempt to access your PC.
I advise against displaying too much personal information online and always treat unexpected correspondence with suspicion.
4) Which outlet do you enjoy dining at and what are your favourite dishes at The British Club
When we first joined the Club, I was amazed at the variety of food available. All the dining options are excellent.
We really enjoy the Windsor Arms for lunch. Everyone in the family has their favourite dish. The Sunday roast lunch reminds me of being back in England, so that’s my favourite. The boys love the BBQ ribs and Nicole enjoys trying the monthly specials.
5) Lastly, tell us an interesting fact about yourself and your family.
I have a twin brother living in the UK. Completely unidentical. How weird is this, all the males in our immediate family tree were born in March! My father, my elder brother, both our sons, our two dogs, and of course myself (and twin). It’s a super busy month for poor Nicole. *laugh out loud*!
Robert joined the Club in March this year and is working in Palo Alto Networks as the Senior Director of Global Customer Services.

5 PAIN POINTS OF OWNING A CAR IN SINGAPORE
On average, it costs about £350/month to own a car in the UK. But in Singapore, it’s way more expensive and troublesome. The pain of owning a car here is amplified for expats. Yet, many still choose to own a car due to its convenience. But before you decide to buy a car, you should consider the options available. Here’s why a Car Subscription is better than owning a car in Singapore.
1. Length of Stay
Knowing how long you’ll be in Singapore is important to make your decision. If you’ll be here for less than a year, you shouldn’t commit to a big investment. You’ll be better off subscribing to a car. If you’ll be here for more than 5 years, then buying your own car is worth it. Still, that’s a big and risky investment to make!
2. Big “Investment”
Everyone knows how expensive it is to own a car in Singapore. COE premiums cost a bomb and you’ll need to fork out cash for the downpayment. On top of your monthly loan repayment, there’s also the road tax, insurance and maintenance costs! But that’s not all, on average, your car depreciates $1,000 a month! Which means you’ll be spending a lot on something that loses value by the day.
3. Hassle of Selling a Car
As an expat, selling your car is all about the right timing. Finding a good deal for your car takes up a lot of time and effort. You’d probably take a few months just to sell your car at a reasonable price. Imagine how it’ll be like if you’re leaving the country… Sell your car too early and risk being left with no transport for your family, sell too late and you won’t be around to facilitate the sale.
4.
Is it worth it?
For many, having a car is for convenience, especially if you have kids. But if you travel overseas a lot, then maybe buying a car is not a good idea. You won’t be using your car to the fullest and the money could be used on better things in life, like a holiday.
5. Long Term Commitment
Owning a car is not only a big financial “investment” but also a long term commitment. But what happens if there’s an emergency and you need to fly home? Or if your financial situation changes and you can’t afford to keep the car? If you own a car, you’ll face the time-consuming and troublesome process of selling your car. If you’re leasing a car and you terminate your contract early, you’ll incur a high penalty. It’s restrictive and inconvenient.
A Painless Car Ownership Experience
As an expat, you need a flexible, hassle-free and economical car ownership experience. Instead, the traditional way of car ownership is stressful and has a lot of restrictions, penalties and hefty sums. But with car subscriptions, you can enjoy a commitmentfree, flexible and affordable (from just $1,499/month) experience. There’s no downpayment to worry about, just a 100% refundable deposit to get started. Enjoy the freedom to drive with no contract to tie you down. You can easily cancel, return or switch cars every month, penalty-free. Monthly fees are all-inclusive, covering everything you need - insurance, road tax, maintenance and 24/7 roadside assistance. These benefits make car ownership a breeze and fit your expat lifestyle perfectly. Owning a car will never be easier!
If you’d like to experience the future of car ownership, visit carro.sg today.
ADVENTURES OF AN ACCIDENTAL AUCTIONEER
So, in the last edition of the magazine I told you how I ‘accidentally’ started HotLotz and how we began operating from a former hawker centre on the outskirts of Tiong Bahru.
One thing that is consistent for every auctioneer around the world - and the main reason why I love my job - is that you never know what (or who) is going to come in through the door. Every single day is different and there is never, ever a dull moment.
I get to meet so many fantastic people and often get asked about my favourite sales, well, here’s a few!
How Many Dresses, Madam?
When a glamourous American leaving Singapore invites you to sell the contents of her whole home, you jump for joy. But when she also casually mentions she has several rooms of designer clothes that she doesn’t know what to do with, you practically bowl her over to get up the stairs to take a look! Unfortunately, all 500 items, mostly unworn or just worn once, were less fun or me (and for many of our female clients who were larger than a size 8) but they did become the inspiration for our ‘branded luxury’ sales which we now hold regularly. And we have our first Men’s Branded Luxury auction coming up this September!
This amazing, limited edition candy lime yellow 30cm Hermès Birkin bag was one of the highlights from a branded luxury sale and we sold it for $8400.
Ring-a-ding-ding!
Imagine if your partner popped down on one knee and presented you with an exquisite two-carat oval cut diamond, flanked on either side by a sparkling pear cut diamond. That’s what happened after we sold this ring for several tens of thousands of dollars to a local romantic looking for an exceptionally good diamond. What a lucky girl! (There’s no picture of this one – as we don’t want to ruin the surprise, and HotLotz has bagged an invite to the wedding!)
A Big Art’ed Buyer
From the estate of a famous Australian architect who designed some of Asia’s finest hotels, this piece was sold for several tens of thousands of dollars. It was created by the famous Singaporean artist, Eng Tow
(who has art hanging in the National Gallery). This enormous piece measured 179cm high by 262cm wide – sadly not for the average Singapore sized condo wall!
Anyone for Tea?
This very pretty antique cloisonné enamel five-piece, silver-gilt tea service sold for a whopping $8,400! Made in 1896 in St Petersburg, it was snapped up by an international dealer at one of our regular international sales and was whisked back to its homeland in Russia.
Watch And Earn!
One day, whilst digging through her father’s possessions, our seller came across this old Heuer watch and brought it in for a valuation. WHISKY TASTING THE GLENROTHES
SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY
Fri, 16 Aug and 6 Sep
6:30pm to 10:30pm
Windsor Arms
Full and beautifully balanced, The Glenrothes is a statement of the whisky maker’s craft.
A fine Speyside Single Malt with ‘house style’ characterised by notes of ripe fruit, juicy citrus and a hint of spice, accompanied by a distinctively creamy texture in the mouth.
The Soleo Collection pays homage to the sherry seasoning of their oak casks; a defining feature of The Glenrothes. Soleo is the name of the traditional sun-drying process used in Jerez to prepare grapes for the finest sherry. The grapes absorb the energy of the Andalusian sun as they transform from bright green and yellow to deep purple – the optimum moment for fermentation.

THE SQUASH SECTION DEBATE . . . BEER OR CIDER??
By James and Omair
Pro Beer / Anti Cider James Pickles
The top 5 reasons that any squash player should exclusively drink beer are:
• It does not taste like lolly water
• You will not go bald (look at the photo please) – cider is high in sucrose and high-fructose corn syrup which scientists have linked to baldness and impotency in men.
• Cider originally hailed from France and this is meant to be the British Club. Beef Wellington and a pint of London Pride please governor.
• OJ Simpson openly declares his favourite drink is cider. “I love my wife and want her to have a long and happy life”, he said.
• All my mates drink beer, except Omair who turns up with a six pack of Strongbow but then decides to drink my beer anyway. Why? Because it tastes better.
Pro Cider / Anti Beer Omair Azam
The top 5 reasons that our squash section is moving towards cider:
• There’s nothing like the taste of a refreshing, sweet, and crisp beverage after beating an Ozzie on court.
• Beer guts are out, cider bellies are in.
• It’s a premium product, unlike Heineken and Tiger, and it’s good to class it up sometimes innit?
• Ozzies are just slow on the uptake, there’s a global cider revolution underway, don’t experience FOMO! (Editor: “Fear Of Missing Out” to help the majority of our squash players)
• It’s the drink of choice for today’s youngsters, and let’s be honest, with an average age of 50+ the squash section needs an injection of youth.
In conclusion, the squash section has decided to drink BOTH BEER AND CIDER all summer long as we try to decide what is the favourite drink of our squash section.
If you enjoy playing squash and/or drinking beer and/or drinking cider, drop by on Monday, Wednesday or Thursday nights for our weeknight socials or on Saturday afternoon for our weekend social. After social, order a BEER, order a CIDER and cast your vote.

David Brown has done many amazing things in his time in the British Club tennis section. Six mixed doubles titles in the club's open tournament, five singles triumphs and four men’s doubles trophies. There is one thing he has never managed, however, that his incredible daughter has now achieved. In the 2019 edition of the club open, Tamryn won the ladies’ singles, ladies’ doubles and the mixed doubles (with David). This triple is an all-time first for the club and a magnificent achievement. When Tamryn is on the WTA tour, we can all tell stories of watching her play on our courts.
The club’s open tennis tournament is always a highlight for the section but this year’s was extra-special. Brilliantly organised by Liza, our convenor, and Holly from the Sports management team, there were great matches in all five draws – dazzling stroke-play, brilliant comebacks, matching outfits – and a wonderful atmosphere on the Scores balcony (hat-tip to Mr Pimms and Ms Chardonnay).
There were many other champions to celebrate, of course. One of the most coveted awards went to Niamh and James Daniels who were named “best dressed” – James looked great in the pink he chose to match his wife. James featured again in the “most romantic” award . . . this time with Tim, his men’s doubles partner (they also won the doubles plate).
Back on court, the indomitable Charlie Thomas won the men’s singles. This competition featured most of the club’s top players and so from the quarter finals onwards there were some epic matches. As he so often does, though, Charlie found a way through to reclaim the title. Ben Kiggell won the plate there (for the third year running . . . next year he is determined not to lose in R1 again).
The men’s doubles was also a high quality draw with some fantastic battles but the best was saved for last as Gianluca Lionetto and new member, Alan Brown played brilliantly to come back from a set and a break behind to beat Charlie and Jonny Wright in the final.
The Mixed Doubles had drama on both sides of the draw. A second father/daughter pair – Julian and Elena Chesser – triumphed in a plate competition that featured some epic family tussles, not least Merissa and Zen Johan beating the Martins 7-6 in a third set, and then going down 6-4 in the third to the Motions in the next round. The ladies doubles plate final kept up the drama with Linda Snowdon & Hayley Naidoo winning in 3 sets.
Congratulations to everyone who played, organised and supported in making the 2019 Open such an enjoyable few weeks, and roll on 2020.
