MISSION

To be the leading international Club in Singapore, exceeding the expectations of our Members and their families.

Dear Members,

2020 seems to have been a whirlwind and I can hardly believe that we are fast approaching the end of the year. This also signals the start of the Christmas festivities and New Year resolutions. For many of us, this year’s festivities may be a bit different. Whilst many borders around the world may still be closed or travel remains challenging, I hope that although you may not be able to reunite with family members this Christmas, you will still be able to enjoy a good break in good company over some wonderful meals and festive cheer.

In this first of year presidency, I am extremely proud of what the Club has achieved. Clearly a very challenging year for all, I am so very pleased how the membership has stood by the Club with unwavering support. With the unstinting support of our incredible staff, the Club remained open even during the circuit breaker, catering to the community in terms of takeaway F&B and has been a haven to many of us in the second phase of COVID-19 precautions. I am also delighted that we have had many new Members join us in the last few months, despite these uncertain times.

As with every Christmas and New Year, the Club has carefully curated various delectable menus for all our Members to choose from and enjoy as we

celebrate the festivities. While we will have to make do without buffets this year due to the pandemic, rest assured that these menus will appeal to your palate, nonetheless. Whether you would like to spend the Christmas and New Year in the comfort of your home, or head to the Club for a meal with your family and friends, we have something for everyone from the Windsor Shop to the various dining outlets. Remember to check out the Festive Supplement in the magazine to find out more.

Finally, on behalf of the Main Committee, I would like to wish you and your loved ones a very Merry Christmas and a brighter New Year.

Dear Members,

It is a pleasure to be writing this message for the final magazine edition of 2020, what a year it has been! one which we will all remember for many years to come. Let us hope we can get back to some sort of normalcy next year.

The Club has been fortunate enough to weather this challenging period due to the tremendous support from you, our members. We thank you for frequenting the Club as much as you do and for referring new members to join the Club. We have welcomed a record number of new members over recent months which will stand the Club in good stead for the years ahead. While we were unable to host our usual Annual Staff Party in October, I would like to also give thanks to our supportive and hardworking team.

This year’s Annual General Meeting will take place on 26 November. All voting Members are invited to attend. Stay tuned to our EDMs and social media channels for the latest updates. You will also be receiving the annual report detailing our summary of achievements during the past year and our financial statements.

Sundaram, the Club Facilities Manager and his team have been very busy with maintenance and upgrading work since the reopening of the Club in June. This will continue in the next few months with the installation of new outdoor playground equipment by the

pool and new sun loungers with comfortable cushions. We are taking this time with many of our Admin staff working from home to also upgrade the Club administration office, this will include a new air conditioning filtration system, new ceiling, carpets, and appropriate screening between workstations. The tennis courts will be resurfaced, and new drainage installed from mid-December.

We anticipate many of you will be in Singapore for the festive season this year and we are gearing up for a wonderful Christmas at the Club. We expect a very busy Christmas Day lunch this year so do book early. We will be serving Christmas set menus this year in the Windsor, Verandah, Mountbatten, and the Elizabeth Suite. We will also be offering takeaway roasts, so if you plan to spend Christmas Day at home, we would be delighted to do the cooking.

We are taking our annual Wine Affair virtual this year and a hard copy brochure is enclosed with this issue of the magazine. We have an amazing selection of wines available at great prices so do stock up for your year-end celebrations. Don’t forget to check out the Windsor Shop for the many delightful Christmas goodies.

Before I sign off, I would like to gently remind all members that we are not out of the woods yet and we are getting regular inspections from

the authorities, therefore, please always wear your masks, except when exercising, eating or drinking. Several establishments and customers have been fined recently for flouting the rules, so please help us keep the Club compliant and a safe place for all of us.

Finally, on behalf of the Club Management and team, I would like to thank you for the continued support throughout the year and hope you have a wonderful year-end and Christmas season.

A VERY DIFFERENT CHRISTMAS: PREPARING FOR 2020 COVID HOLIDAY SEASON

As we slowly approach the end of the year and the season of festivities looms closer, many of us will be speculating over what the holiday season of 2020 will look like.

The mini-break beach holidays are out, work Christmas do’s are uncertain and will the kids even get to see Santa this year? The truth is we do not know, but as we inch closer to the end of the year, it seems increasingly unlikely.

It appears most of us will not be able to make our annual trip back home to see our family and friends for this Christmas season. For those of us who were expecting grandparents, again it is unlikely anyone will be allowed to visit us here in Singapore as the

rest of the world struggles to contain the virus. This will undoubtedly be upsetting for many and may be particularly upsetting for younger children and adolescents who depend on these family holidays to stay bonded and connected to loved ones back home.

As life starts to slowly return to some sort of semblance or normality, we could be forgiven for forgetting the global impact of Covid. For young children in particular, they will have acclimatized very quickly to this new way of living and may be too young to understand or be aware of what is happening elsewhere. It can therefore, be difficult to explain to them that this year’s Christmas holiday with loved ones or planned visits may be cancelled.

How can you support your kids to cope with the upcoming holiday season?

Be honest: It is important to manage their expectations and be honest. Discuss how this year’s Christmas might be very different to other years and what they can expect. Even very young children can understand that being healthy and staying safe is essential.

Acknowledge their disappointment: 2020 has been an unprecedented year for us all. Help your child acknowledge that your family will celebrate Christmas a little different this year whilst offering reassurance and instilling hope that next year will be better.

Focus on the positive: We will all need to rethink how we celebrate the holidays this year and it can be tempting to focus on what we cannot do. Instead help kids find new ways to celebrate with loved ones. Use Zoom to organise a Christmas carol concert, a family Christmas Quiz or open up presents together with Grandma and Grandpa abroad.

Physical distancing not social distancing: Even though the term social distancing is being used, we are in fact being asked to physically distance. It is more important than ever to stay well connected with friends and family during this time. Encourage your kids to regularly call family and friends as this will help them maintain those vital social connections.

Be positive role models: Children take their cues from adults and by modelling appropriate coping skills, parents and care givers can help children with their coping behavior.

It is completely normal and expected for children to feel upset about missing out on holidays/family reunions. If however your child is showing signs of sustained low mood, depression, anxiety or help please seek medical advice.

A GOOD TIME TO BUY UK PROPERTY

UK property has long been a popular investment for British expats. With Stamp Duty tax breaks available until 31 March 2021, could it be a good time to invest?

There are lots of tax considerations, especially for expats. Here are some of the most common questions asked by non-UK residents.

Will I have to pay tax to purchase a UK property? If you already own property you generally pay a 3% Stamp Duty Land Tax surcharge above the normal Stamp Duty rates. This applies even if the value of the property falls within the current England and Northern Ireland £500,000 nil rate band. The extension to the nil rate band is set to end on 31 March 2021 and from 1 April 2021, a further surcharge of 2% is set to be applied for non-UK residents purchasing UK property from that date. This would make the highest rate of Stamp Duty payable for a non-resident purchasing an investment property in England, at 17%.

Will the profit from letting my UK property be taxable even though I am UK non-resident? Non-UK residents are, generally, still charged tax on UK sources of income – including profit made when letting your UK property. If you are an EEA citizen or hold a British passport you are entitled to a tax free personal allowance which, this year, exempts £12,500 of profit from UK tax; anything above that is taxed at rates of 20%, 40% and 45%. If you are not entitled to a taxfree personal allowance any profit made will be taxable. For a couple, think about who should own a UK property and be charged any tax on the income. If one

of you is entitled to tax-free personal allowance, it’s better to have the property in their name.

How can I stop my letting agent from deducting tax from my income? Agents are required to deduct 20% tax from rental income paid to a non-resident landlord – whether or not that income is taxable. To stop tax being deducted, you need to sign up for the “Non-Resident Landlord Scheme”. HMRC will then authorise your agent to pay your rental income without deducting tax.

Will I need to complete UK Tax Returns? You need to submit annual Tax Returns to report any income you receive from letting a UK property. That form needs to be submitted by 31 January 2021 and any tax due needs to be paid. Will I need to pay tax when I sell my UK property even if I am not UK resident? Yes, the sale of UK land and property will fall into the UK Capital Gains Tax net even if you aren’t UK resident. There are rules if you have been non-resident for less than five years, if you owned your UK property before 5 April 2015 and if you have ever lived in the property as your home. Capital Gains Tax rates for the sale of your UK property are charged at the highest rates of 18% and 28% depending on your Income Tax rates. Selling or gifting any UK property needs to be reported to HMRC within 30 days and tax due needs to be paid within 30 days.

Will my UK property be exempt from Inheritance Tax? UK Inheritance Tax, which can be charged up to 40% on assets above £650,000 for a couple, is

determined by your UK tax domicile status. You may need help to understand your domicile status which is different to tax residence status. You acquire a domicile of origin in your childhood. If you are UK domiciled your worldwide assets will face UK Inheritance Tax. If you are not UK domiciled only your UK assets are within the scope of UK Inheritance Tax. Your UK investment property falls into the Inheritance Tax net regardless of UK domicile.

As a non-UK tax resident, when you purchase UK property as an investment, do consider the UK tax implications. Generally, you pay tax when you buy, receive income from, sell and leave your property. You need to be aware of the requirement to register to be a non-resident landlord, the deadlines for submitting Tax Returns and paying tax on the income earned and the tight reporting and payment deadlines when you sell your UK property. It’s important to consider tax implications and reporting requirements for your UK property.

If you would like help with registering for the Non-Resident Landlord Scheme, annual UK Tax Returns and reporting a sale of a property to HMRC we will be delighted to help you. We can also assist with understanding your UK domicile status, a plan to reduce your Inheritance Tax exposure and how you can maintain non-UK tax resident status. OVERCOMING HOMESICKNESS

“Yes, they’ll all come to meet me, arms reaching, smiling sweetly. It’s good to touch the green, green grass of home.” Tom Jones understood homesickness.

As any expat will tell you, it’s absolutely natural to feel homesick, at times; to long for familiar places, beloved faces and a sense of belonging. This craving for home can be troublesome any time – travel is not always easy nor affordable. However, now, in light of the travel limitations, quarantine periods and visa restrictions associated with the COVID-19 crisis, the usual sense of homesickness is likely to be exacerbated.

Although there is no substitute for the relief of being on home soil, there are ways we can mitigate the anguish of homesickness and maintain a greater sense of well-being when we’re stuck, far from home.

Reflect on the details of your longing

Take some time to acknowledge exactly what it is you are missing about home. Is it the people? The environment? The space and nature?

The lifestyle? Are there alternative ways for you to reconnect with those precise elements, without jumping on a plane? Are there activities or locations within Singapore that can fulfil that particular longing in you?

It is worth contemplating on whether homesickness is actually a bout of claustrophobia. For many expats –particularly those used to freedom of travel or close proximity to natural spaces – long periods of time on the Little Red Dot can create a yearning for relative freedom, space and quiet. If you recognise your yearning as claustrophobia, look for ways to enjoy the quieter, less urbanised areas of the island, and refresh your perspective.

Avoid ‘greener grass’ syndrome Don’t romanticise your return home or buy into the myth of “happy ever after”, particularly if you are considering a long-term or permanent move. Studies show that positive life changes such as marriage, financial windfall and, for expatriates, returning to a beloved homeland can increase your sense of happiness, but only temporarily (from a few weeks to a couple of years). In addition, researchers estimate that only around 10% of your happiness quotient is dependent on your current life situation – you are only slightly happier when external circumstances are working in your favour.

Therefore, it’s unwise to assume that a return to greener, home pastures is going to lead to increased and lasting life satisfaction. Realise that if you are unhappy here (and if you

have been unhappy in previous locations), you are eventually likely to become unhappy ‘back home’. It’s okay to want to be happier and, thankfully, research shows that there are many ways to increase your sense of well-being and life satisfaction (like connecting with nature, spreading kindness, donating your time or money, and practicing gratitude and forgiveness). So, let go of the idea of greener pastures, and start engaging in the habits and practices that will increase your sense of happiness right here, right now.

Cultivate a gratitude mindset now Studies show that our mind is programmed to look for and amplify the negative, and this means there are many wonderful facets of life in Singapore that you may be not seeing or acknowledging. A daily gratitude practice will help you recognise the positive side of life, wherever you live. It will also enhance your sense of happiness and help alleviate homesickness. Importantly, if and when you do travel home, an established gratitude mindset will make your return feel more wonderful, as you will be attuned to finding gratitude in all that your homeland has to offer.

Homesickness can cause very intense, very real emotions. However, I recommend against knee-jerk reactions – particularly if travel is an uncertain prospect. Instead, take time to reflect on what you truly miss, be realistic about your homeland’s potential, and embed a daily dose of gratitude into your everyday life.

Tanglin Orchid Gin (ABV 40%)

$108+ per bottle (U.P $168+ per bottle)

A modern, smooth gin, the pine of the Juniper is unmistakably there. The herbaceous flavour notes come from classic gin botanicals but the twist comes from Indian Amchoor, a powered form of green unripe mango that adds an extra citrus note and their not so secret ingredient is in the name, Vanilla Planifolia Orchid.

Tanglin Mandarin Chilli Gin (ABV 40%)

$108+ per bottle (U.P $168+ per bottle)

For this expression, the focus is on a citrus nose, and the gin is finished with chilli and ginger to give the taste buds a lift with a slight tingle on the lips.

BOTTLE OF THE MONTH

Tanglin Black Powder Gin (ABV 58%)

$108+ per bottle (U.P $168+ per bottle)

Named after the accidental discovery of gunpowder by a Chinese Alchemist who was searching for the Elixir of Life, the gin’s flavour comes from half the Juniper berries used in its production being bruised, as well as adding whole fresh lemons to the core Orchid Gin.

Award: San Francisco World Spirits Competition – Double Gold

Any 2 bottles @ $208+ (U.P $336+)

Tanglin Cranberry Gin (ABV 40%)

$118+ per bottle (U.P $188+ per bottle)

With the Orchid Gin at its heart, there is an infusion of organic, preservative-free cranberries and fresh hints of lemon for a seasonal flair. A subtle nod to Singapore’s history, the artwork for the label is Peranakan-inspired to match the spirits’ distinctive colour. This flavourful gin can be served with tonic or by simply pouring over crushed ice, garnished with fresh or dried cranberries.

2 bottles @ $218+ (U.P $376+)

Glengoyne 12 Years

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE YOUTH FOOTBALL PROGRAMME AT THE CLUB!

Already a budding footballer who is looking to improve and move up to the next level? Here at the British Club, we partner with International Soccer Academy (ISA) to bring football to our Members. With almost 20 years of experience, we are confident there is a training programme at ISA for everyone.

ISA coaches believe it is important to give boys and girls of all ages and abilities high quality coaching and the space to develop their skills in a positive, fun and nurturing environment. The coaches have over 50 years of combined professional coaching and playing expertise.

Benefits of football training for kids:

1. Builds up grit and determination

2. Trains biomechanics skills

3. Improves social skills in a team setting

4. Keeps the mind alert and focused

5. Instills discipline

6. Teaches respect to authority - coaches/referees

7. Introduces leadership skills

8. Develops active and healthy lifestyle

9. Increases positive self-esteem and confidence

10. Expends energy for sleep better

At ISA, training methods vary based on the player’s stage of development, taking into account the player’s age and size, physical and psychological development and level of potential already achieved.

• Beginners (Ages 4-6): When players are just starting, ISA believes players should have fun while developing an interest in football. Players in this stage can learn basic football skills as well as general skills such as coordination and attentiveness.

• Young Players (Ages 7-12): For players at this stage, ISA focuses on deepening skills and allowing players to explore and consider positions on the pitch as well as develop the ability to effectively interact with teammates. Coordination, agility exercises and games based on reactions and changing of direction are also part of training for this age group.

• The Golden Age (Ages 13-15): ISA training focuses on development and education. This is the “golden age” for the development of technical, tactical, and psychological skills. ISA coaches work on basic technical skills, individual tactical awareness, and basic principles of the game.

• Maturing Players (Age 16-18): This is a time to reinforce the qualities already acquired to enable the player to improve performance. At this age, ISA focuses on key technical, tactical, physical and mental factors, as well as encouraging physical fitness and developing skills.

LOCATION:

Located just less than 3km away from our Club, Rainforest Sports Hub is home to our Youth Football programme. SWIMMING: We Are Back!!!!!

Like all of us, the Masters Swimming Section was impacted by the Circuit Breaker and we have all missed the camaraderie and the joy (code word for “pain”) of the coaching from Alain, Julian and Mark from Total Swimming.

During the lockdown, we were able to keep in touch every week through Zoom calls, which were fun, comparing our different exercise regimes without having access to a pool (this varied from swimming in a small pool with a bungee cord to doing dry land core work to lifting wine glasses from table to mouth at regular intervals - make sure you use both arms for balance).

Since we moved into Phase 2 after the Circuit Breaker, the Masters have been able to return to the pool. The management of the sessions are in line with Sport Singapore guidelines for swimming:

• Temperature checks at entry to British Club

• Arrive wearing masks and preferably already in swimming kit

• The number of swimmers per lane is limited to 5

• Coaches all wear face shields

• Entry and exit to swimming area are regulated during busy times (at the weekend)

Even with these control measures, it has been fantastic to get back into the pool and although we said goodbye to a few members who left Singapore, new swimmers of all abilities have

joined. The section is going from strength to strength with more than 30 active members and there are a healthy number of swimmers at each training session. Total Swimming organises one-hour training sessions 6 days a week:

• Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 8am

• Tuesday and Thursday at 7:30pm

Although the swim sets can look daunting at first, you’ll soon realise how easy they are to understand (once you get the swimming lingosome of us are still trying to decipher the difference between “build” and “descending”…) and so whether you used to swim and want to get back into it, a seasoned swimmer who wants to be pushed swimming with elite Masters or a beginner, the structure of the training sessions caters to all.

So if you were to join, what do you get for your $120 per swimmer per year (half year and monthly payment plans available)? In a normal year, the section fee entitles you to a “club breakfast” every month after a Friday or Saturday swim set, a subsidised Christmas Dinner and usually contribution to open water swims and Masters competition meets. Obviously with the current situation, swim events and competitions are paused, but club breakfasts still continue with COVID-19 restrictions

in place and we are hoping that we will be able to have some sort of celebration at Christmas, but this will depend on how restrictions evolve. As a taster you can see how we celebrated last year!!!! (Thankfully the picture was from the start of the evening)

Please note that for swim coaching by Total Swimming, there is an extra fee of $70/month (if attendance for the month is less than 5 times per month) and $110/month (if attendance is more than 5 times per month).

So what are you waiting for? Contact us at swimming@britishclub.org.sg if you are interested. We would be delighted to hear from you and give you more details.

From your beloved Swim Committee.

BCFC 2020 – a review

After what has been an unprecedented year, post COVID -19, we somehow now seem to arrived at the end of the year! What a year it has been! Reflecting on a year without tours, with leagues cut short and no 11 a-side football since the early months of this year, it makes you wonder what we may fill this article with……

However, with the gallant efforts of the committee we have been able to deliver football [of sorts] with 5 man pods maintaining social distancing working with the Cage to ensure that we maintain the fitness of the members.

The Social side has seen a mix of Zoom calls, challenges including “Chug the Mug” Jim’s Circuit Breaker Challenge & The Round the World Challenge, all of which have kept us on our toes, engaged and active during the lockdown. A big thanks to Kenny Cowgill, Stew Frame, Mike Hughes and of course Jim Rowan for coming up with the ideas and delivering them for the Section!

We have also caught on trophies, with long overdue presentations give to the Players Player of the Year for 2019 being Mark Hughes & Billy “The Legend” Morgan finally receiving the much coveted award.

We lost some good friends to a mixture of University, new opportunities and relocating to various locations, our best wishes go to:

Paul Smith and Linda who returned back to the UK, an unlikely keeper you may think, but a much loved and often surprisingly agile “Smithy” was a legend on tour and between the sticks!

Paul McNamara and Sue, who moved to Valencia, the NBG [Natural Born Goalscorer] will be missed, but surprisingly NOT for his goals!!! A great tourist, always last at the bar with the youngsters and rarely on time for game or to tap in the crosses!

We also saw Josh Simpson & Archie Ponds head off to University and Donners Junior leave for boarding school. We had Tom Hodge and Alex Davies back from University and playing , which was great. We wish

them well with their studies and hope to see them back in Singapore wearing the BCFC shirts once things improve.

We have seen new members join though, so welcome to Brad Hunt our most recent recruit - a young ANZA player who wants to take on the challenge of playing in a mens team and league, welcome Brad.

Whilst we all hope that we will see the numbers permitted to play increase to a minimum of 10, we have looked to keep the training dynamic and Kenny has arranged BFA to provide, what is an excellent hour of training for the Section. It has been well received and if you have an interest to train between 5pm to 6pm or 6pm to 7pm on a Saturday with the Football Section please reach out to the Scores or the football section to sign up.

To all the members, thanks for sticking with the football, for the camaraderie, your ongoing support and attendance and we hope we will be back playing some form of competitive football soon.

As we look to support the Club and Section, it’s been great to see some new initiatives kick off, with Social tennis being served up to provide a different outlet and most recently a cycling group that gives some diversity and fun for all members. With only the occasional accident being reported so far!

To the committee, a huge thanks for all of you efforts during what’s been a torrid year, we continue to serve up football, fitness, training, tennis and the occasional bike ride or two! This washed down with a beer or two at Scores keep us all sane in what would otherwise be a very challenging time!

Stay safe and enjoy the festivities that will see the end of a very unusual 2020 and let’s hope 2021 sees some normalcy return.

Remember the BCFC expects…..

Squash section reboots the popular Social Handicap Round Robin

After a hiatus of many months, the Squash section organised the first post-lockdown handicap round robin during the regular Saturday afternoon social timeslot. These popular round robin events have previously been held on the last Saturday social of each month, and after many months away there was a palpable sense of excitement from the section members keen to take part once more.

Given the current restrictions around social distancing and the need to cap the number of players on and around the courts, the section arranged for the event to be split into 2 halves - an early and a late session. Each involved an hour of hectic where everybody plays everybody in pods of 5, with a semi-final to round off the session. The two semi-finalists met the following week for the big showdown.

A special thank you goes to Keith Carpenter who reviewed and adjusted the handicap scores for all the players, including a healthy number of new section members who have recently joined the squash family at British Club.

And congratulations to young James Nicholas who overcame his old man Ashley in the semi-final, and then won the final 2-1 against the “older” Nick Fell to take the title. We are already looking forward to the next instalment of the tournament in a month’s time.

In addition, we are planning the annual end-of-year handicap tournament, with all eyes on Charlie Thomas to see if he can make it yet another victory this year. The draw has been made, and there will be more news to come in the next edition!

TENNIS:

British Club Tennis Section

If Friday’s social tennis night is anything to go by, several members of the British Club find a friendly game of tennis at the end of the work week a great way to wind down and be ready for the weekend.

The sessions are held every Friday between 7pm and 10pm and you can count on a group of 10 to 12 players to turn up. Some like a competitive but friendly game, while most players are there to relax, exchange some good-humoured banter and hit a few good shots to stretch out their muscles at the end of the week.

The aim of the night is to keep people playing as much as possible. If a few players have to step out for a while, those left on the court will play four games before rotating those on the side lines back into play.

As you can imagine, with players from different parts of the world, you can learn some useful phrases in various languages of encouragement or self-admonishment!

The night’s tennis usually ends with players enjoying a few drinks and a meal, especially on the first Friday of the month with the Tennis Section providing a complimentary drink. (On hold at the moment due to the current COVID-19 regulations)

There is always room for new players, so if you want to check it out and join in, here is what you need to know:

Friday Mixed Socials: All are welcomed
