President’sMessage

Dear Members,

This issue is packed with exciting updates, and I invite you to flip through the pages to take it all in. I would like to start by sharing a special milestone—thanks to your generous contributions throughout 2024 and from our Charity Ball where we raised $29,000, the British Club is proud to be able to sponsor a horse at Riding for the Disabled (Singapore)! Meet Pitita, a wonderfully gentle and friendly horse. You can read more about her on page 6 of the magazine.

On behalf of the Main Committee, I am delighted to congratulate Andrew Vine on being awarded Life Membership. A dedicated member since 1994, Andrew has made invaluable contributions to the Club that has left a lasting impact, and we are grateful for his continued support. More on Andrew on page 10 of this magazine.

I also want to take a moment to thank you for sharing your thoughts on the domestic worker policy. We greatly appreciate your feedback, and please be assured that the Main Committee is carefully reviewing all responses before determining the next steps. Every submission is taken seriously, and your input plays an important role in shaping our Club’s bye-laws.

On a lighter note, I hope you are as excited as I am about the new playground near the swimming pools and for the re-opening of Scores! With its refreshed café-style interior, I am confident it will bring a vibrant new atmosphere to the Sports Centre, with sports sections also using this as a venue for their events.

To all our new members, a warm welcome to The British Club! I look forward to meeting you and seeing you around the Club.

Dear Members,

Although the year started off on a quieter note, the Club came alive once again with the Lunar New Year celebrations, Member’s Connect Night, Superhero Pool Party, and Comedy Night. It’s always a joy to see the Club buzzing with members, and with Easter just around the corner, we have an exciting lineup of activities to fill your calendar, including our Easter Party, Tennis Camp, and Multi-Activity Camp. Be sure to register early as spots are limited.

In this issue, we invite you to join us for a special International Women’s Day event featuring inspiring women from our membership who will share their career journeys. Hosted by Emma Pike, Chair of the Food & Beverage Committee, this is a fantastic opportunity to come together and be empowered. In May we are hosting a Play called ‘Chinese Boxing’, after successfully touring the UK. It’s historical yet topical and is presented by British Actor Mark Kitto.

I’d also like to highlight the new Weekday Set Menu at Windsor Arms, a perfect option for those looking to enjoy a delicious and satisfying meal during the workweek. If you're looking for a venue to host a lunch meeting, Windsor Arms provides the perfect setting away from the city. At just $35+ for a 3-course meal, it offers great value, making it an easy choice if you are looking for quality and convenience.

Lastly, it is with great sadness that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of Jenna Chan, a beloved member who tragically lost her life during a school trip to the Maldives. Jenna was well-loved by our staff and fondly known as the ‘Spaghetti Bolognese girl’ at Verandah Café and Scores. On behalf of the Club, we extend our deepest condolences to her family during this difficult time. Our thoughts are with them.

Members’ Connect Night

Thursday, 6 February

On Thursday, 6 February, we hosted a warm welcome for our newest members at the Treetops Terrace, including His Excellency Luciano Mazza de Andrade, the Ambassador of Brazil to Singapore! The evening provided the perfect opportunity to meet the Main Committee and allowed them to familiarise themselves with the different sports and social sections we offer.

President, Roger Harrold, and General Manager, Andrew Christon, shared updates and exciting plans for the year ahead. Members enjoyed a delicious spread prepared by our talented Chefs, featuring everything from classic scotch eggs to variety of desserts, and a lively thosai station.

A special thank you to Progeny for their generous support in making the evening a success. Congratulations to the lucky winner of the hamper draw!

Galloping into Giving: Meet Our Sponsored Horse, Pitita!

Thanks to the generous contributions of our members and guests at the British Club Charity Ball 2024, we successfully raised $29,000 for our chosen charity. This incredible support has enabled us to sponsor Pitita, a remarkable horse at Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Singapore! Horses play a huge role at RDA in providing the unique horse-riding therapy to those with disabilities. Our sponsorship helps to ensure Pitita’s wellbeing by covering upkeep, food, medical and other associated costs.

About Pitita

Pitita was born in Argentina in 2004 and was a successful polo pony in UK for many years. She joined the RDA herd at the end of 2023 but was already an old-hand at being a therapy horse – she had done hippotherapy at another stable and was a firm favourite there. This clever mare soon settled into RDA and quickly gained many fans – despite her big size (which makes her great for taller riders), she is extremely calm and easy-going. She is very curious and loves to watch the bustling activity in the car park and reception area.

Volunteer at RDA

RDA Singapore was founded in 1982, with just five riders and a whole lot of heart. Since then, the charity organisation has provided therapeutic sessions to over 7,000 children and adults with physical and mental disabilities. RDA is always looking for volunteers (both as groups and individuals) to help with horse-riding therapy sessions. Scan the QR code to discover more about how you can make a difference!

Going Green: How Our New Chillers are Saving Us Money and the Planet

We're thrilled to share some exciting news about our commitment to sustainability! Over the past three months, our newly installed chillers have proven to be a game-changer. Our Club energy consumed a hefty 205,000 kilowatt-hours per month. With the new Chillers, the numbers have slashed, resulting in 159,000 kilowatt-hours.

Previously, our old chiller system consumed an average of 66,000 kilowatt-hours per month. The installation of new chillers has significantly reduced energy consumption at the Club, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability. Since the new chillers were implemented, energy consumption has been reduced. This translates to significant cost savings: roughly $14,102 per month, or $169,704 annually. This achievement highlights the effectiveness of the new chillers in promoting energy efficiency and reducing the Club's environmental impact.

While the initial investment was $1.88 million, the projected payback period of 11.1 years is considerably shorter than the typical 20–25-year lifespan of chiller systems.

The benefits extend beyond the bottom line. By reduction in energy consumption, we're making a real difference in reducing our carbon footprint and contributing to a greener future for our community. We're proud of this achievement and committed to continuing our efforts towards environmental responsibility.

Extending our gratitude to Andrew Vine, for his valuable contributions!

Life Membership is the highest possible award to an individual who in the judgement of the Main Committee has significantly supported and further developed the Club. We congratulate and recognise Andrew Vine for his significant services to the Club over many years.

Andrew's commitment to the Club is evident in his long history of service. Since joining in 1993 (and celebrating his wedding here that year!), he sat on Membership and Rules Committee before joining the Main Committee and was President of the Club in 2002.

Andrew has been a big supporter of the sporting activities in the Club and longterm member of the Sport Committee. He has a long tenor as Squash convenor since joining the Club and holds that position to date. He has also been instrumental in building two fast growing new sporting activities namely Padel and Pickleball. He is also a keen convenor of social activities and a voice of advocacy within the Club and especially for the Sports section. Andrew’s personal time and dedication have been instrumental in building these activities that count towards the largest in sports section of the Club.

Our sincere thanks go to Andrew for his many hours of devotion, and we look forward to having Andrew and his wife around the Club for many years to come.

Congratulations to Adam & Sophie Seston on their British Club Wedding!

It’s 6pm on the evening of Saturday, 28 December 2024. A moment long anticipated and planned for to the extreme. The venue is the Elizabeth Suite at the British Club Singapore and the occasion is the celebration of the marriage of the lovely Sophie Endl and our BC-addict son, Adam Seston.

There was no question about it. It just had to be celebrated at The British Club. Our ‘second home’ in Singapore for 26 years, during which time Adam had enjoyed great success in Swimming, Squash and eating the Club’s famous chicken rice.

But this is not the start of this story.

The joyous celebrations began in Vancouver, Canada 16 months earlier on the 20 August 2023 when the happy couple pledged their troth and signed on the dotted line. Adam and Sophie found each other in their first week of University life at UBC, Vancouver in 2014 and have been inseparable since. At risk of becoming that nauseatingly proud parent, I have to say that they make a truly wonderful couple.

Sophie is Austrian, Adam is Singaporean (as is Mel, his Mum) and I am British, so many many air miles were earned as the two families and worldwide friends converged on Vancouver in beautiful British Columbia to celebrate the union. But, of course, not all family and friends could make the occasion so there was nothing left to do but to take the show on the road.

Next stop, 15 October 2023 in ‘God’s own county’ Yorkshire, UK to celebrate with Adam’s grandparents (both 94 years young) and our Brit family and friends, all decked out in flat caps and tweed of course.

Then, on 25 August 2024 onto Vocklabruck, Austria to share the joy with Sophie’s family and friends surrounded by the breathtaking mountain scenery and culture that only the European Alps can deliver.

And now, 28 December 2024 at 6pm, the grand finale to this wedding world tour in our family’s ‘happy place’, the wonderful British Club Singapore. A perfect venue, cloaked in greenery and fond memories atop Bukit Tinggi, for celebrating with our Singapore family and friends.

Adam has Javanese ancestry from Mum so we felt it was right to honour his heritage on this happy occasion. And so it was. The Elizabeth Suite was made

resplendent with glorious floral arrangements and creative indo-deco (thanks Emma and Rahim of Decorama), makeup and Java bridal attire was done to perfection (thanks Lina Pahlianti), guests dressed up in Batik and Kebaya (thanks all), Javanese gamelan musicians and dancers set the scene (thanks Azman and Seri Mayang Sari) and our media magicians captured the moments (thanks Haizal and HMP).

As always, the British Club’s staff were simply amazing and made it a very special evening for all. Fauziah’s calm and capable event organisation made life so much easier, Agilan’s event management ensured success on the night and Chef Fairuz’s wizardry in the kitchen had everyone sneaking back for 2nds, 3rds and even 4ths (Rhys!) until the end of the festivities.

A heartfelt thank you to the British Club for an incredible event. You helped make lifelong memories.

Thursday, 30 January

Thank you to everyone who joined us in welcoming the Year of the Snake! Members and guests were treated to a lively Lion Dance at the Club’s Lobby, followed by traditional performances at the Verandah Café including Chinese Dance and the fascinating Face Changing Act.

Our Main Committee led the tossing of the Lo-Hei, showering the Club with wishes for continued prosperity and success! We hope you enjoyed the festivities, and here’s to a fantastic year ahead!

Superhero Spirit Shines at Pool Party! Sunday, 16 February

Even a little rain couldn't dampen the superhero spirit at our Pool Party on Sunday, 16 February! From face painting and balloon sculpting to a challenging superhero quiz and the Best Dressed contest, the energy was electric! Congratulations to the winners in the boys, girls, and parents’ categories, who wowed us the crowd with their creativity and super moves.

A huge thank you to our chefs for keeping everyone fuelled with a delicious poolside feast. We're already counting down to our next pool party – see you there!

HOW TO REDUCE FOOD WASTE WHILE DINING AT THE CLUB?

Reducing food waste while dining at the Club, or dining out in general, is easy with a few mindful habits. Here are some practical tips:

1. Check the portions – Ask about portion sizes and order accordingly. For example, Verandah Café offers pizzas in two sizes.

2. Order What You Can Finish – Remember the saying: ‘My eyes were bigger than my stomach’ meaning that you have ordered more food than you can eat. Avoid over-ordering by starting small; you can always order more if you are still hungry.

3. Customise Your Order – If you know you are not going to eat the bun of a burger, you can order a ‘naked burger’ or ask for a different type of bread if you do not want to eat a white bun. The club has lovely sourdough bread. Request no sides or ingredients you do not like.

4. Share Dishes – This is a common concept in Asia, but sharing meals not only allows you to taste multiple dishes, but it also helps prevent leftovers. Research has also shown that eating with others is more enjoyable than eating alone.

5. Pack Leftovers – While in some cultures it is considered rude to request a ‘doggy bag’, taking food home for consumption does help the reduction of food waste. If you already know that you usually cannot finish the entire portion, bring a reusable container.

6. Compost Scraps – If possible, compost biodegradable leftovers instead of throwing them away.

By being conscious of what you order and how you consume it, you can help minimise food waste and make dining at the Club and eating out more sustainable.

Celebrating the Life of Jenna Chan

Jenna Chan, daughter of Alan Chan and Dr. Jennifer Liauw, was a much-loved member of our Club community, since 2009. Fondly known as the "Spaghetti Bolognese and extra parmesan cheese" girl at Verandah Café and Scores, Jenna’s warmth and energy brought joy to everyone around her.

On 8 November, Jenna’s life was tragically cut short during a school trip to the Maldives. There, she was taking part in the British charity Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme—a cause that reflected her adventurous spirit and generous heart. Jenna will be remembered for the joy she brought to our community and the many lives she touched.

We offer our deepest sympathies to her family at this time and hope this tribute serves as a fitting celebration of her life and the memories she leaves behind. Can I have some Spag Bol to go with my cheese?

Jenna’s Personality and Presence

Jenna was always smiling; she was pure sunshine. She always managed to fill everyone around her with joy and laughter and was constantly telling jokes. Her presence was often the biggest in the room, usually by being the loudest and most enthusiastic person there.

Special Memories at the Club

Jenna and her sister, Alisha, shared many childhood moments at the Club. They practically grew up there. As toddlers, they both enjoyed the Mike Gorrie Playcentre, cooking with the Little Chefs, attending the Halloween, Chinese New Year Christmas Tree

Lighting parties and more. In recent years, a weekly highlight was dining at the Club. She usually ordered Spaghetti Bolognese with a double helping of parmesan. Once in a while, she would have the Carbonara, but not once did she ever skip the cheese!

Staff who held a Special Place in her Life

Evon at Verandah was her favourite as she always knew exactly what Jenna wanted before she even said anything. Evon has known Jenna all her life, being one of the first people at the Club to meet her as a baby.

Jenna’s Favourite Photo

A message from Jenna’s Family

We are most grateful to have had Jenna as our daughter and sister. She would want us to follow her example by continuing to smile and always showing kindness to one another, so we will do our best to honour her in that way.

What is an accredited investor in Singapore?

An accredited investor is an individual or business who is qualified to invest in a wider selection of investment products. These products are usually more complex and can also be referred to as unregistered, private securities offerings not usually available to retail investors.

For example, shares in new businesses that are not yet public, or products missing the usual standard of regulatory disclosures.

As this level of investing is more high-risk, to be an accredited investor in Singapore you must meet the requirements set out by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), which we review below.

The accredited investor regime in Singapore

Different countries have their own criteria to qualify as an accredited investor. The MAS applied legislative amendments to enhance regulatory safeguards for investors in 2018, which means in Singapore the introduction of an opt-in regime enables investors to specifically provide consent and opt in to be an accredited investor status.

Consent, or the ability to opt out can be provided in writing if they change their mind.

The rules that apply consider an individual’s income and assets, with some of the requirements including proof of income over the past 12 months equal to or above SGD300,000, or their financial assets, as a whole outside of any liabilities, must exceed SGD1 million (or its equivalent in a foreign currency).

Who can become an accredited investor?

There are rules in place to ascertain who can become an accredited investor, most of which require an individual to have a certain level of income or assets to be considered.

They must demonstrate both satisfactory financial knowhow and capital, as they will be dealing with a riskier and more sophisticated market of investment products. In simpler terms, they must have the resources to operate as an investor at this level and be prepared for the risks involved.

How to qualify to become an accredited investor in Singapore

The rules differ for becoming an Accredited Investor depending on whether you are an individual, corporation or trust. Individuals must qualify for one out of the three requirements opposite:

Their financial assets, as a whole outside of any liabilities, exceed SGD1 million (or its equivalent in a foreign currency); or

Proof of income over the past 12 months must not be less than SGD300,000 (or its equivalent in a foreign currency); or

Their net personal assets exceed SGD2 million (or its equivalent in a foreign currency), of which the value of the individual’s primary residence (net of any secured loan) can only contribute up to SGD1 million.

What documents will I need to provide?

If you are looking to become an accredited investor in Singapore you will need the following:

Bank statements.

Titles and deeds.

Housing loan statement.

Salary slip.

Letter from employer certifying individual’s income over the prior 12 months required.

Financial planning and advice for accredited investors

When it comes to investing at a high-level, it is important to work with a professional team of experts to guide you through the market.

The focus of our experienced team in Singapore is to help you create a strategy with suitable investments and pension planning that meet your short and long-term financial goals.

Our financial planners hold the highest standards of professional qualifications, and pride themselves in providing trusted and transparent advice to help you discover ideal solutions and create the best investment journey for you.

Grape Varietals: 50% Chardonnay, 30-35% Pinot and 10-15% Meunier

A pale gold colour. Fine bubbles feed a persistent mousse. A delicate nose with hints of fresh citrus and white flowers. The wine’s complexity is expressed in successive notes such as those of vine peach and white fruit. A perfect balance between freshness and delicacy with fruity flavours very present on the finish.

About the Show

There’s a fascinating – and very entertaining – theatrical play making a tour of Singapore after successfully touring the UK. It’s historical yet topical and is presented by British Actor Mark Kitto. According to Cindy Yu, China editor at The Spectator, Kitto’s self-penned solo production is, ‘intelligent and humorous. A very good place to start if you want to understand China.’

The war in Ukraine, turmoil in the Middle East and the U.S elections are the pressing issues of the day. But the even bigger one is: how will the world get along with China?

‘Chinese Boxing’ tackles the question head-on, with no pulled punches and a light touch. The show starts off as a lecture (at the British Club, Singapore in the year 1912) to the Royal Asiatic Society by Sir Claude MacDonald, ambassador to Peking during the infamous Boxer Rebellion of 1900, when hundreds of foreign diplomats were besieged in the city. You may know the film, ‘55 Days in Peking’ with David Niven. The little-known story has enormous modern relevance. Sir Claude wants to discuss ‘China and the West today’ but he starts by ‘taking you back to Peking in 1900’, to the Imperial Palace, where the audience is mistaken for a foreign delegation. You hear the Chinese side of the story. It is not straightforward and will challenge your view of the past…and the present. After the show Mark hosts a Q&A. FOOTBALL Rekindling Childhood Joys: The British Club’s Family Football Initiative

Remember those carefree days of childhood when you’d head to the park with friends for a spontaneous football match? The British Club Football Section is bringing back that nostalgic experience with its exciting family football initiative, designed to cater to players of all ages.

A Field of Fun for All

The Family Social Football initiative is born out of a desire to foster a sense of community and provide a fun, inclusive activity for families. It’s a testament to the Club’s commitment to bringing people together through the shared love of sport.

Saturday Family Social Football

How It Works: Simply sign up, show up, and get ready to play!

Every Saturday, players can form teams on arrival, with options for kids vs kids, adults vs adults, and even mixed teams of kids and parents. It’s a great way to bond with family, meet new friends, and get some exercise while enjoying the beautiful game.

Location, Time, and Cost: The session takes place at the North London Collegiate School (NLCS), Depot Road, every Saturday from 1-3 pm. The cost of participation will be free of charge at the launch. A small charge may be made when the programme is up and running.

Please note: This is not a drop off event. Parents/ Guardians must be present and responsible for their children’s safety and behaviour.

Wednesday Night Social Football

Recognising the decline in league football options and the difficulty in accessing 11-a-side pitches after the closure of Turf City, the Football Section introduced 7-a-side social football on Wednesday nights from 7-9pm. Held at The Cage in Dempsey, these sessions are open to all players, with priority given to British Club members. It’s a great option for players who want to enjoy non-competitive football and work on their touch and fitness. Typically, enough players gather to form three teams for a round-robin set of games, followed by a social gathering afterwards.

Organised by the Football Section

Both the Saturday Family Social Football and the Wednesday Night Social Football are promoted and organised by the British Club’s Football Section, with the support of dedicated volunteers.

A Thriving Football Community

These initiatives are just a glimpse of the vibrant football community that thrives at the British Club. With a longstanding tradition of nearly 20 years, the Football Section caters to players of all ages and abilities, offering regular weekly games in various formats, including 5-a-side, 7-a-side, and 11-a-side.

Get Involved!

Whether you’re a seasoned player or a newcomer to the sport, the British Club Football Section welcomes you with open arms. If you’re interested in playing competitively or just joining the social sessions, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at football@britishclub.org. sg or speak to the staff at the Pro Shop. You will need to sign up for the Saturday Family Social Football or the Wednesday Night Social Football on WhatsApp.

Come and Join the Fun!

The British Club’s family football initiative is a fantastic opportunity to reconnect with your childhood love for football, create lasting memories with your family and friends, and experience the camaraderie of a vibrant sporting community. Don’t miss out on this exciting opportunity to get involved and enjoy the beautiful game!

GOLF Section Update

End of Season Order of Merit

Els Desaru, 30 November – 1 December

The end of season golf event, our Order of Merit was held at the magnificent Els Desaru course over two days on 30 November to 1 December. The event is held in a concept similar to the Race to Dubai for those familiar with the DP World golf tour, whereby the winners from our monthly social matches qualify to compete in the year ending match. This is a 2-day Stableford competition over the Valley & Lakes/Coast courses at Els Desaru. The challenging Valley course was played on Saturday with scores reflecting the tough conditions and course layout. Tim Barkham took a narrow overnight lead over Steve Settle in 2nd and Aidan Mitchell in 3rd.

The second day over the Lakes/Coast course was very tightly contested with great performances notably from Jackie Barkham with a 4 over handicap score and Aidan Mitchell 2 over, but the two leaders managed even scores to handicap in a seesaw match that saw the game decided on the last hole of the weekend in nail-biting fashion.

Congratulations to Tim Barkham for winning the 2024 Order of Merit event.

1st Place- Tim Barkham

2nd Place- Steve Settle

3rd Place- Aidan Mitchell

Upcoming Events & Games

We now have teams entered in the Monday night and Wednesday night (scramble format) leagues held at Orchid Country Club. There are opportunities to join these matches on an ad hoc basis and members are encouraged to contact the committee should there be interest in an evening game.

Into 2025, the monthly Friday socials in Singapore and weekend social matches in Johor Bahru will continue. The tour in mid-March will be to Pnomh Penh, Cambodia.

The golf section exists to connect like-minded social golfers in an inclusive environment, offering social matches and more competitive golf to all. We welcome golfers of all ability and participation to join us for fun on the course, either in Singapore or for our overseas tours and events. Thanks to all section members for supporting our events, and to the committee for organising ongoing golf activities for the section. See you soon out on the course!

SQUASH Section Update

The British Club Squash Section is the Club’s second biggest sports section, and possibly its most active! We recently held our first section meeting of 2025 since the AGM in December to plan the agenda for the year.

The AGM elected the constitutional members of the committee (Convenor, Treasurer, Secretary), received the Convenor’s report, as well as the Treasurer’s Report.

So now we can confirm the committee:

• Convenor Andrew Vine

• Treasurer Ben Kiggell

• Secretary Craig Telmer

The Squash section’s success is due largely to inclusion of a dozen or so members, taking on various roles and responsibilities. So, we are grateful for having the following members taking responsibility for the following key activities.

• Social Squash / Ladder Oliver Hopkins

• Handicap Tournament & Rankings Keith Carpenter and Ben Carpenter

• Friendly Matches Raymond Kwee, Ragnar Bulie, Ben Chandler, Pavan Mocherla

• Cosmo Captains Rahul Ghosh and James Buchanan

• Tours Captain James Buchanan

• Long Ball Sander Holman

The AGM was held immediately after the finals of the annual Handicap Tournament, followed by end of year cocktails on the Scores decking area – a very nice way to see out a successful year. The 2024 Handicap winner was Martin Verga, and the Handicap Plate winner was Matt Cannon. Tradition has it that we also give out 3 awards, and this year, “Most Improved Player” was awarded to Oliver Hopkins (again); “Most Competitive Player” was James Buchanan; and the “Good Fellowship Award” went to Rahul Ghosh.

The core of our section activity revolves around our regular social squash activities:

• Social Squash – Monday and Wednesday evenings, and Saturday afternoons

• Social Handicap Round Robin – usually the last Saturday of the month

• Social Drills and Coaching – sessions to be arranged at occasional social sessions

While the precise dates of many of our fixtures still need to be confirmed, this illustrates the activities we are planning and should fulfill this year, another vibrant year of club squash!

• Annual BC Squash Handicap Tournament – March to May

• BC Squash Long Ball Competition – TBA March

• Friendly Match vs American Club (Away) – TBA April

• SSRA National Leagues – April to June

• Social BBQ Dinner with Spouses – 24 April

• BC Squash Tour to Japan – TBA

• Friendly Match vs SICC (Home) – TBA June

• Annual Cosmo Competition – August to November

• Singapore Open Professional Squash Clinic – Mid-November

• BC Squash Veterans and Grand Masters Tournaments – August - October

• Friendly Match vs Singapore Cricket Club (Home – TBA September

SWIMMING Barracudas:

Junior Swimming Section News

On 1 November, 52 swimmers and parents had a fantastic evening excursion to the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup at OCBC Arena. Our Barracudas watched thrilling, record-breaking races and met some of the sport’s top stars including Léon Marchand, Regan Smith and Duncan Scott. Many juniors got their team t-shirts signed, creating special mementos of the evening. It was an inspiring experience, and we’re excited for more adventures like this as we revamp Junior Swimming at the British Club.

Awards Night and Christmas Party

Our Annual Awards Night and Christmas Party was a blast! It was a night full of fun, laughter, and celebration, as we recognised our swimmers’ hard work. Huge congratulations to Scarlett Gapper and Nate Benny, our Swim Team Captains for 2025. They’ll do an amazing job leading the team. The party wrapped up the year perfectly—here’s to an even better 2025!

New Swimming Kit Coming Soon

Exciting news — our brand-new swimming kit is launching this year!

From stylish t-shirts to costumes, jammers and swimming caps, there’s something for every Barracuda to show off their team pride.

PADEL Section Update

since September, 2010

The British Club Padel section has been as busy as ever with Social Padel Tuesdays continuing to be booked to capacity and beyond. Consequently, we are now offering two courts on a Thursday evening. One for Intermediate players and for the first time, a court for our ladies-only group, this is intended for ladies that wish to hone their skills so they can get the most out of their padel games.

New developments continue in both the clothing department, with new padel shirts in red, white and blue proving to be very popular with members and, of course, the playing department. On the playing side, we will have our inaugural friendly match against the Hollandse Club, where we have a strong line up including Charlie Thomas and Matt Rawbone as the first pairing. We are also making efforts to improve the whole sections capabilities with some ‘guided lessons’ with a coach, for greatly reduced rates.

Our first Rodeo of the year was a very close-run competition just saw Jamie, edge out Matt Cannon and Phil Duckworth. The Rodeos are generally once a month and enable a points-based competition where everyone plays with and against everyone else. They prove to be very popular and hard fought. The evening is topped off with a few stories of smashes missed, volleys netted and general banter over a drink in Al Capones.

If anyone would like to join our growing padel family, then please do get it touch. It’s a huge growth sport and you will notice courts popping up all over Singapore. So if you would like to get involved in an organised social environment that if fun and friendly then please do get in touch!

TAEKWONDO Taekwondo at The British Club and Beyond

The Korean Martial Art of Taekwondo was developed out of defence, to stop fighting and bring peace. It requires mindful discipline and dedication that transcends into daily life. Taekwondo has grown all over the world and even into an Olympic sport, but every student’s journey humbly begins with a white belt symbolising the beginner level. The order of belts signifies a student’s progress and skill. Junior students progress through various colours ultimately aiming for The Black Belt achieved in Senior levels. After having achieved the First Dan or a Black Belt, there are 8 more Dans (or degrees) which culminate in a 9th Dan Black Belt, which students can continue to train and achieve over the course of a lifetime.

The coaching staff would like to recognise two recent achievements amongst our senior students; Black Belt First Dan for Emma Malacchini and Black Belt Second Dan for Zara Sharma. Congratulations to both Emma and Zara for their dedication, hard work and achievement. Keep up the good work!

Lastly, the coaches would like to recognise a continued achievement beyond Singapore: previous member Thomas Abernethy who started his journey with TKD at TBC under Coaches Adam, Andy and Jeffrey. Upon having to repatriate to Australia in November 2021, Thomas continued to diligently work hard with his Taekwondo and with the added support of our coaches, was awarded with his Second Dan Black Belt. Congratulations Thomas! We wish Thomas continued success.
