Needless to say we have more good things taking place in March for you to enjoy, all included in the pages that follow. CLUB NEWS

COMPLIMENTS Hi Shakila,

Dear Ira,

Everything was wonderful and thanks so much for helping to arrange.

Many thanks for the excellent arrangements that you and your team made for yesterday’s SASS Council Meeting and Annual General Meeting.

In all honesty, the Club was the perfect venue for getting out of the office to think and plan and everyone enjoyed being there and of course loved the catering.

The meeting facilities worked extremely well, and the Dining Room layout was most impressive. The food was first class and greatly appreciated by the SASS President and Council, the members and our guests. The latter included a group of four ship suppliers from Port Said who happened to be in town and joined us for supper. Egyptians love their food and these guys were most impressed with the Buffet Supper.

I will spread the word. Thanks again and greetings from a grey, cold and wet London! Robert Williams Regional Commercial Manager - South East Asia British Airways

Please relay our thanks to all concerned – your staff, Tony and the F&B crew, the Maintenance team and all from the Indian Kitchen. A great combined British Club effort – very well done. Kind regards Douglas Inch

COUNTDOWN WITH PETE PRICE BACK FOR BEST OF BRITISH 2014

Hi Everyone I am starting to get really excited about “The Best of British 2014”. Let me remind you who I am. It is Pete Price from Radio City 96.7 in the heart of Liverpool. Also stand up comic. Columnist and all round nice guy. While I have mentioned the radio station I must tell you about a wonderful feature we do every week which, if you fit the criteria, Id love you to be part of. It is called Scousers Abroad. If you came from Liverpool, North West England or North Wales I’d love to hear from you. This is how it works. We will sort a time out to suit you and then record a 20 minute interview about life where you are now, why you left England, the cost of living, things you miss, comparisons between the 2 places and finishing off by name checks to your loved ones and friends. We have been to so many places – have a look at the Radio City website http:// www.radiocity.co.uk/on-air/peteprice/scousers-abroad/ You will see a map of all the places we have been to world wide. If you fancy it why not email me pete@radiocity.co.uk and lets have a chat!

people fed it bananas. I’m not a great lover of monkeys which doesn’t help when you have one sitting on top of you!! But it is all part of being in paradise. I hope you are all well and happy and starting to buy tickets for “The Best of British”. Let me leave you with a couple of thoughts. There could be a tie up this year with the new Mayor of Liverpool and did you know that the 3 queens are sailing down the River Mersey in 2015? Yet another clue about the ball that will be the finale of “The Best of British”. Pete Price A few weeks ago I was in Singapore having some exciting meetings about this year’s “Best of British” with Mr Sean Boyle and his wonderful staff. If I lived in Singapore it would be essential that I was a Member of this Club especially with its wonderful facilities. We are on track to top last years event but even now Im not giving too much away. Suffice to say we will not let you down! I must tell you, in case you are wondering, about the picture of the monkey on my head why it was sitting there. After leaving Singapore I sailed on a beautiful yacht to Bali. It was just your average day in paradise…when this thing leapt on my head and sat there for 10 minutes while

It’s a taxing time for Brits with UK property By Martin Rimmer

The attraction for British expats in buying property in the UK will lose some of its shine after a new Government tax grab is introduced. Chancellor George Osborne announced last December that British expats who own property in the UK will pay capital gains tax (CGT) when they sell the property, unless it’s their main home. This brings Brits based overseas in line with residents.

it is also very likely that principal private residence relief will apply along with the associated lettings relief. Obviously, it is virtually impossible for a non-resident to claim their main home is in the UK (without jeopardising their nonresident status), though we do expect occupation of a property as a home for a period to count where a property has been occupied as a main home at some point previously.

While the finer details have yet to be announced, we do know that the tax will be on future gains arising on or after 6th April On the other hand, this may simply be wishful thinking. If the 2015. SQuash:

SPRINGTIME IS SQUASH TIME By The Boaster With the Chinese New Year and the final plate of Yu Sheng behind us, it’s time for the squash section to look forward to some new competition. The Singapore Squash Racquets Association inter-club league starts in March and, in line with the theme of the new year, the British Club will be entering a team of young(ish) stallions in the A grade league and two squads of experienced warhorses in the E grade and E grade veterans events. It has been observed that our regular E grade squad and our veterans’ squad are almost identical, suggesting that the demographic time-bomb has already detonated down by the squash courts, but the team will be hoping that cunning and experience can triumph over youthful vigour. Clearly it’s been a while since any of them watched Wile E Coyote take on the Roadrunner on the cartoon network. The E-graders will be playing on Monday evenings, the A graders on Tuesdays and the veterans on Fridays, so please note that there will be fewer courts than usual available on those nights when we have a home game. To keep our readers entertained while waiting for news of SSRA victory, we have a small quiz reflecting the all-round athletic excellence of the BC squash section. Can you name: (a) The squash section member who ran the New York marathon in 3:52 (and it’s not who you’d expect) (b) Two section members who have climbed to the top of Mt Kilimanjaro (c) The section member who was a two-sport professional athlete (neither sport was squash!) (d) The section member who has played international sport (again, not squash) for two countries and played in the gold-medal team in an international tournament. Answers on a postcard to The Boaster, c/o Scores.

SPORT & FITNESS Golf:

GOLF SECTION HAPPENINGS By Nigel Spry competitions. Members are encouraged to load the initial five scores to obtain a handicap but the final handicap is achieved and updated once the system can record the best ten of twenty loaded scores.

Our year has kicked off with a social gathering at Urban Fairways and the first of our Monthly Medals, where players earn points in the Race To The Sarojin. January Medal The Januar y Medal was reasonably well attended with 13 players making the first tee at Warren Golf & Country Club. The course was in great shape as usual and again we were treated to fantastic weather; when is it ever going to end? The winner by a good margin was Charles Pierron, with a stableford score of 36 points. Steve Settle, Nigel Spry and Manny Fernandez (our guest from the American Club) were vying for the runner-up spot with 33 points which was eventually decided on a count-back, with Steve and Manny coming away as joint runners-up. As usual there were novelty prizes with the longest drives going to Oliver Stoffel and Kevin Gibson and nearest the pins going to Gavin Kramer and Manny Fernadez. Congratulations to all including the winners of the various side bets taking place. Steve and Gavin both played off a course handicap of just 8 and this medal marked the first time we used our formal section handicap system to calculate the course handicaps and record our stableford points.

Sunday Event The Section is again extremely fortunate to have great sponsors including Urban Fair ways and The Sarojin who provide the grand prize in our year long event; bestowing upon the eventual winner a well deserved holiday retreat in thei r wonder ful resor t in Khao Lak. The Race to the Sarojin continues in February with our first Sunday event. We have introduced Sunday Medals in our calendar for 2014, particularly for Members who may have difficulty taking a vacation during the week. The February Medal will take place on the Max Wexler designed Plantation Course at Tanjong Puteri Golf Resort in Malaysia on Sunday, 23 February. The course is a firm favourite of the Section and we look forward to a relaxing and enthralling game of golf. It promises to be a fun event as we open to it to all British Club Members, guests and particularly any other sports section members who wish to join us. The pricing of golf at Tanjong Puteri is attractive and we are also looking to keep the transport costs down by self-driving. Anyone interested can contact Wan Lay Chi at wanlaychi@britishclub.org.sg

The golf section handicap system is now free to all Members once they have belonged to the section for three months. It is linked to the British Club sports website and provides a personal USGA Handicap scorecard and calendar of events. It is available for all games and not just our own section

SPORT & FITNESS Tennis:

What about WITS? By Grace Swallow, WITS Coordinator

WITS stands for Women’s Inter-Club Tennis Singapore, a tennis league for women who like a competitive challenge. The league runs team tennis competition twice a year with a Spring Season and an Autumn Season. The British Club is sponsoring seven teams in the league in Spring Season 2014, the competition runs from February through May. The Tennis Section is proud to able to support ladies’ teams across a range of competitiveness, with teams entering in D Division and up to A Division: • • • • • • •

I have been playing WITS for more than 10 years and started with the British Club Team in year 2000. I totally love playing for the British Club and getting to know more and more members, testing my skills and just enjoying the game. I always feel proud being part of the club team especially when we play our home game for there is usually a lot of support from the Scores gallery from my teammates AND other British Club players. As WITS coordinator, my role on the Tennis Section is to encourage more participation from members in the British Club WITS teams and coordinate with the WITS committee. Organising 7 teams (approximately 72 ladies) is not easy, but thankfully I get support from Kelvin, the coaches and all the team Captains.

Don’t just take my word that it is great fun. Hear what some more of our racquet wielding ladies have to say about WITS. If you are a keen tennis player, I encourage you to join a Hope many of you will consider joining a WITS team for the British Club Team. To get started, you need to be assessed Autumn Season which kicks off in August. Please contact me by our Tennis Director, Kelvin Maclean, so you are able to at adeswallow@me.com to register you interest. place competitively against ladies of similar standard. Once you are placed on a British Club team, you will participate in group coaching for the team with our Club Pros. This improves your tennis technique as well as mentally prepares you for the matches with teammates. An added bonus: you starting making new friends.

Angela Vohmann, One Hit Wonders in D Division I have been playing tennis just under 2 years and last season was my first in WITS (and any competition). I enjoy getting to know team mates, the laughter on court and the occasional drama. My husband and I tried the Friday night mixed tennis social – planning to return soon in spite the black eye from errant tennis ball. So far, we only use the sports sections of the Club but I always enjoy the warm welcome from staff and those free biscuits!

Suzanne Blacklock, Swing out Sisters in B Division I was previously with the Glam Slams in Beta and have been a member of the Club for about 12 years now and played most of that time...in between having children. I started in WITS C division with a British Association team and played a few seasons with some wonderful ladies. Five years ago, I started playing for British Club WITS teams. I love playing tennis at the British club as it’s a great spot to meet other tennis enthusiasts and so to have some great games. Lots of fun as well. When the kids were younger it felt hard work to even get on the court, never mind having any stamina to play long matches. But the years roll by and now that they are older, it’s a lot easier and I can devote more time to improve. Also I now start to see some enthusiasm for tennis in my offspring. My son Callum (age 9) plays in the KLM junior tennis league (for the British Club as well). It’s hard to keep him off the courts as he has so much fun with his friends! My daughter Isla (age 7) has also started playing and is finding her tennis feet plus even the youngest one Liam (age 3) loves chasing balls and is keen to start! I didn’t play before coming to Singapore and I think the kids are very lucky to have the chance to receive lessons from some great coaches and play at the club....rather than hitting against a brick wall which is how I practised as a kid. Its nice to see the improvement in all the kids at the club as they progress and play more matches. Friday nights are always spent at the Club watching the kids but there is a lot of socialising among parents and in the wonderful setting of the Sports bar where the friendly flying foxes drop in regularly!

Fiona Cobban, Doubles All around in C Division I like being a member of the BC WITS team as it makes me feel like I belong somewhere and I love being part of a team. I like the team training as it is a good way of meeting friends and you get a great sense of team spirit. It is one of the highlights of my week being coached by Kelvin and his team and meeting up with the girls. I love the social side but as I improve I feel a bit of my competitive side coming out. I began playing tennis occasionally with some friends in Hong Kong and decided to join the BC D team having sat and watched my two boys play at the club over years. This is my fourth season but my first season with Doubles All round. I spent two seasons with a lovely team called Shirl’s Girls in D Division. My third season was with Smashing Housewives who came in second place in the WITS competition. We have been a member of the British club approaching 20 years and we have met some great friends over the years. We religiously enjoy our curry up at the Verandah every Sunday evening and inevitably bump into people we know. Ross my 15 year old and Ewan who is 12 have enjoyed having lessons at the BC over the past 5 years or so. They both enjoy entering KLM. The tennis section has really improved over the last 2 years and it is certainly a major part of our lives in Singapore. The kids are really starting to benefit on the social side to as the section increases in numbers and has more opportunities for them to play. So am looking forward to the new season of WITs with a new team and hope that we can win some trophies!!

SPORT & FITNESS FOOTBALL:

Football Frenzy

By Grant Hall (Football Convenor & Sports Chairman)

Family priorities have frantically been adjusted in the busy British Club Football Section as matches continue to come thick and fast as the pledge to have fixtures every Saturday are fulfilled. Not only do we run 4 elevens in competitive leagues but this year we have entered a World Cup Tournament that is being played on Sundays and we also have our regular “midweek friendlies”, normally once a month but sometimes more, against the SCC and Indian Association to name a few. On top of that we have fully committed to Tuesday training which sees a fine blend of fitness, skills and 7-a-sides over a 2 hour session with a variety of in-house players leading these sessions.

The 3rds have a lot of passion and energy in their team, marshalled superbly by Captain Mike Hughes and Vice Captain Robin Thuillier but alas they often come up against “oppo half our age and twice our speed” and hence results have been indifferent; “we were 1-1 with 15 to go and lost 4-1 as we simply ran out of puff” said a regular midfield player who did not want to be named for security reasons (or fear of being dropped?)! The 4ths are sadly losing their flamboyant Captain, Ross Stalker, at the end of March who is heading home to try and fiddle the Scottish Independence vote but they have a very capable Vice Captain in Roger Kelly who will continue to give 100% on the field of play!

The first of our semi-annual Tours will see 20 of us playing two competitive matches in Manila over the weekend of March 21-23; a new Tour venue adding to our prestigious list of places that have been conquered including Phnom Penh, Ho Chi Minh, Bali, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Phuket and Bangkok. We are looking for a new venue for our September Tour that might see us play in Laos, Siem Reap or Hong Kong although one player’s suggestion of North Korea might be a little bit too adventurous….and too far!

It is a big year for football with plenty of headlines coming out of Brazil with regards to June’s World Cup; I expect it to be a spectacular event…if ready on time! The EPL is as exciting as it’s ever been both at the top and down at the drop; come and join many of the Football Section who watch the early Saturday kick-off matches at Scores , under the stars and maybe a cold beer or two in hand ! Having just seen my team, Arsenal, humiliated by Liverpool last Saturday in front of a big crowd (at Scores and Anfield) I did laugh when the following appeared on social media a few hours later:

As I type, the 1sts are currently top of their league, on a run of 7 wins in 8 matches, and playing some extremely attractive football especially with the injection of a few new “youthful players” although the strong defense is very much like a fine wine this year; getting better with age and there is plenty of age on display for sure! The 2nd Eleven, reigning Champions, are also on a fine run and currently top of their league too but their arch rivals, Hibs, scored a last minute winner against us last weekend swinging the momentum their way; a bit like the current EPL!

Mourinho: The Special One Pellegrini: The Tactical one Arsene Wenger: Five One!

THE BRITISH CLUB

Come and join in with the busy, growing and fun loving Football Section; Tuesday training is open to all, a free trial or two on a Saturday is available, a post match beer with us is always fun and watching Arsenal win the EPL this year Live at Scores, or the Windsor for later games, is a must!
