PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Members, The year end is approaching and I want to use this month’s column to reflect on the current circumstances of the Club. Highlights of the Year Over the last year we have achieved strong outcomes in many areas and I am delighted to let you know that the Club has: • managed finances to deliver the best set of results for many years with a small profit and a strong cash position at the year end • improved operational efficiency (renegotiated several significant supply contracts) • achieved very low staff turnover and invested in HR facilities, canteen and rest rooms • increased membership levels (despite difficult economic circumstances) • delivered increased levels of member satisfaction (evidenced by monitoring of feedback forms as well as ad hoc communications) • driven greater awareness of the Club amongst the wider community, corporates and associations • secured higher levels of sponsorship • made significant donations to the charities we support • improved sports facilities (especially a completely revitalised gym) • founded a Rugby section • commenced the redevelopment of the central kitchen and The Windsor Arms (now open); and • specified a new Club-wide IT management system (to be fully implemented in 2017). The 2016 Best of British event was widely acclaimed as the best yet. This event strengthened our ties with the broader community beyond the boundaries of the Club. It also deepened our engagement with the British community in Singapore and we continue to enjoy strong relationships with the British High Commission, the British Chamber of Commerce, the British Association and the British Council. Governance Members of the Main Committee make a significant contribution to ensuring the longevity of the Club, the solidity of its financial position, the quality of the facilities, the dining experiences, the events, the activities, the working environment, ensuring quality IT and other systems, managing communications and marketing and, let’s not forget, driving the regeneration of our membership. Members of the sub-committees also make a significant contribution in support of the Main Committee and in providing real focus in each of their respective areas. Each month, the sub-committees meet with senior members of the management team and it is in these meetings that much of the detailed strategy and actions are developed and determined. I would like to thank all who are involved in committees for their selfless time commitment, energy and enthusiasm. I would also like to encourage others who may have ideas and a little time to take the first steps toward getting more involved. Our General Manager, Sean Boyle, continues to drive the Club forward with his high-energy enthusiasm and ebullience. It is not always easy to work in a committee-run organisation such as ours and I commend him for his continued patience and adaptability. It Is a real pleasure for me to give a big thank you to all the staff at the Club. At the recent staff dinner and dance, I was privileged to bestow Long Service Awards to 15 staff members with a combined total of 145 years of service to the Club. We are extremely lucky to have such loyal and engaged staff and their focus on the Members is one of the key differentiators of our Club. Whilst we enjoy the year-end festivities, let us not forget those who rely on our generosity during this season. Please help to fulfil a child’s wish with the Riding for the Disabled Association Singapore by picking a Star from the Christmas tree at the main lobby of the Club. Members may also wish to donate, through their account, to the Gurkha Welfare Trust. Your donations go a long way in supporting the work of these two fine charities. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous 2017.

DAMIAN R. HILLS President

THE BRITISH CLUB

GM’S MESSAGE

Dear Members, No doubt many of you have seen the bustle of activity and the various posters and banners around the Club promoting the many dining options and festive events this coming Christmas and New Year. In the weeks to come, it will be an especially demanding period for our culinary team and staff as they prepare for one of the busiest periods of the year! For some, especially those who have just joined the Club, this may be your very first time celebrating Christmas in Singapore and also at the Club. There’s always something for everyone, so refer to pages 24 to 59 for the many offers and events taking place that will surely put a smile on your face as we cater to the young ones and the young once! As we close our final issue of the year, I can again proudly declare that 2016 has been yet another successful and also momentous year for the Club. From the annual Best of British celebrations to the National Day festivities and our ever popular Halloween and Guy Fawkes Night, the Club will then be ending the year in style and elegance at our Black and White New Year’s Eve Gala Ball and family friendly superhero-themed Countdown Party at the Verandah Café on 31 December. So hurry and book before 12 December to enjoy the early bird prices. On 17 October, the Club held its Annual Staff Dinner & Dance at One Farrer Hotel & Spa to show its appreciation to all of its staff. It was indeed rewarding to see so many of our staff receive their Long-Service Awards. I myself have been at the Club for the better part of 6 years, and I am honoured and humbled to be given the opportunity to serve all of you. Truthfully all of these would not have come to fruition without the constant and unwavering support and hard work of our staff, who have constantly upheld the 3-steps of service, bringing Magic Moments to all our Members. As your General Manager, I am writing to ask for your donation towards the annual Hong Bao Fund as a token of appreciation for their effort. As the Club does not encourage tipping of any sort, this annual gesture of goodwill from you to the Hong Bao Fund will be deeply appreciated by the team who work hard enabling the Club to run as smoothly as it has. You will be receiving a letter in your monthly statement of accounts shortly notifying you of this donation, from our President Damian Hills. On Behalf of the Club Management and the team, I thank you for your continued and constant support. I wish all Members a very merry Christmas and a happy and peaceful New Year.

TIME FOR CELEBRATION BUT NOT COMPLACENCY By David Pugh, Director, The Fry Group (Singapore)

At The Fry Group, we were delighted and honoured to receive the Best Adviser Award at The International Adviser’s inaugural Best Practice Adviser Awards 2016 in Singapore recently. For us, this was recognition of a business model focused on driving long-term trusted relationships with our clients based on transparency and tax-led advice built around our customers’ needs. For us that has four key tenets: Referral-led It is very important to us that we start our relationship with clients as we mean to go on. That means we do not cold call, or harass potential clients on social media. Rather we aim to grow by doing a great job for customers and through word of mouth. We focus on British expatriates and specialise in a full range of financial issues, challenges and opportunities that they are likely to encounter. Underpinning our approach is professionalism in financial advice. We are very conscious that expats are often unfamiliar with the Singapore environment and that they are not protected by the same regulation that they are familiar with in the UK, leaving them vulnerable to being sold high-fee products with long-term lock in periods that aren’t suitable to their needs.

TLC We maintain a firm stand against hidden fees and commissions and are guided by our core principles of TLC, T (Transparency) L (Liquidity), & C (cost effectiveness). That means that we charge an advisory fee and provide full disclosure of all of our fees and charges at the very outset of our engagement with our clients. We also recommend our clients invest in flexible portfolios that give them liquidity rather than locking them in with penalties or ‘surrender charges’. We always aim to keep costs to a minimum, as high costs will impact investment performance and are not conducive to building longterm relationships with our clients. Advisers, not sales people We believe there is a big difference between being a true adviser and a salesperson peddling a product. While we employ well qualified and experienced advisors, we maintain our high standards through rigorous and continuous assessment of the team’s skillsets, experience and qualifications. Listening to our clients Finally, we know that we cannot be complacent so we make sure that we are listening to our clients. To help do this we use the Net Promoter Score (NPS) to regularly measure client satisfaction. We then support this with a robust Adviser Excellence programme to ensure we are continually improving our service offering. So while we are very proud and humbled by this award, the mandate now is to focus on continuing to build on our high level of client service and to earn and reaffirm the trust of our clients every day. CLUB NEWS

“OUR WAY” by Raelene Tan

A BRITISH CHRISTMAS “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, Jack Frost nipping at your nose…” The popular Christmas song composed by Torme and Wells in 1946 seems to epitomise the Yuletide winter season. In Britain, the Sunday closest to Saint Andrew’s Day (30 November) is known as Stir-Up Sunday, when families gather to stir the Christmas-pudding mixture, in order of seniority, while making secret wishes. The pudding matures nicely before being steamed and carried to the table on Christmas Day in a blaze of fire from brandy-sauce. In London, people throng the West End to appreciate street-decorations in the weeks prior to 25 December. Near Trafalgar Square’s majestic ‘live’ Christmas tree, crowds gather to sing Christmas carols nightly, while pre-Christmas concerts are hugely popular at Royal Albert Hall. Christmas trees, Yule-logs, candles, holly, ivy and mistletoe decorate homes. Kissing under the mistletoe is not to be missed! Greeting-cards are sent and gaily-wrapped gifts prepared for family and friends who gather to share the festive mood. Children queue to meet Father Christmas, or Santa Claus, in large departmental stores throughout the country. Sitting on the benign gentleman’s lap is a highlight, sharing their thoughts with him. There’s so much more, like attending the Festival of Nine Lessons in the Chapel of King’s College, Cambridge, wassailing with apple-cider for good health, enjoying traditional festive fare and much-anticipated pantomimes. To end as we began, “Although it’s been said many times, many ways, a very Merry Christmas to you.”

Tribute to Malcolm Skipp

The British Club would like to offer its condolences to the family of the late Mr. John Malcolm Robert Skipp, who passed away peacefully on Sunday, 30 October 2016. Mr. Skipp joined the Club in April 1999 and had served on the Club’s Development and Health & Safety Committee for 12 years since 2004. Our thoughts are with Mrs. Skipp Hung Yee and her family during this period of bereavement.

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT

11

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT For this issue’s Member in the Spotlight feature, we are most pleased to present Dr. Bicky Bhangu. Dr. Bhangu joined the Club in May this year. He is currently the Country Director at Rolls-Royce Singapore, having been with Rolls-Royce since 2007 while based in the UK. He is also the President of the British Chamber of Commerce Singapore and Chairman of the Institution of Engineering and Technology. In this exclusive interview, Dr. Bhangu will share with us some insights about the Club and his life.

Bicky, Jennie, Caitlin and George

1) What brought you to The British Club and why?

Our weekends are usually fun packed with a variety of events and activities. On one hand this is exciting as it makes each weekend different. However we also look for somewhere familiar to relax, do sports and enjoy good food – The British Club offers this!

2) What do you love most about The British Club?

Its fun and relaxing, with lots to do for our kids. Caitlin has started tennis lessons at The British Club which she is thoroughly enjoying while George is still deciding what he wants to do – he might get into rugby. And, very importantly, it’s the only place I know in Singapore that sells Yorkie bars.

3) How do you balance your extremely busy work life with family life?

For me it’s about staying focused, prioritising and sometimes juggling. When I am at work either at Rolls-Royce or at the British Chambers of Commerce, I give it my full attention. And the same goes when I am at home with the family. The run up to Christmas can get pretty hectic, as a family we are already planning for the festive period together and scheduling some minibreaks – that’s got the kids pretty excited.

4) What is your motivation and what inspires you?

I love to find solutions to problems – I suppose that’s the engineer in me. I enjoy working on complex and ambiguous tasks that involves thinking, engaging and bringing people together. I keep myself fairly busy from forging business partnership between UK and Singapore to being passionate about inspiring our next generation into the exciting world of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

5) When you need to get away, you will go to…

Usually on a Sunday the kids love to burn off their energy at The British Club pool and catch up with friends – it’s amazing how many people they know and meet here. I start off my Sunday with an early mountain bike ride and can usually be found at the T15 track, mostly pushing my bike up the hill. After a cold shower I catch up with Jen and kids for a family lunch by the poolside and usually with friends – it’s a great relaxed setting and the food is great!

THE BRITISH CLUB

RECIPROCAL CLUB SPOTLIGHT

23

Dear Members I recently had the great opportunity to visit the Tokyo American Club and was hosted by the General Manger, Anthony L Cala and his assistant Brian Marcus for dinner and was given a tour of the Club. I have to say I was most impressed with the facilities and the various activities they provide for their members. I learnt that the Tokyo American Club was totally renovated and re-built at a cost of US$200 million and on looking around the Club, I am not surprised as the facilities are really The Best of the Best. The Tokyo American Club also has accommodation which is 5-star and can compete with any international hotel in Tokyo. We stayed in a hotel in Tokyo, the facilities were not as good, and we paid more for the room than the charges at the Tokyo American Club for a night stay. I would recommend without any shadow of doubt that the next time you are going to Tokyo, make a point of using your reciprocal privileges and visit the Club and experience the hospitality of the establishment. I promise you will not be disappointed. Sean Boyle General Manager

GM with Anthony Cala, presented him a Best of British Bag

Get Back

Ireson Latin Band

Get Back is a band of four who grew up in the 60s, heavily influenced by The Beatles. Their slogan is "the 60s playing the 60s”. The band finds great pleasure in sharing with the audience the original chords, licks, harmonies, and that unique Ringo drumming.

Ireson Latin Band’s music comes from the different backgrounds of each of the members. Its essence blends tradition with contemporary styles, exploring Afro-Latin rhythms such as danzonete, son, bomba, bossa and samba, Mexican and Cuban folklore, bringing forth a new, unique sound.

Your nine-day journey begins in Muscat, visiting sights such as Old Muscat and the Sultan’s palace. Spend a magical night under the stars in a Bedouin-style tent in Wahiba Sands, where there’s plenty of time for sand boarding, quad biking and camel rides too. In Nizwa you can see the fortress, join a cooking class or if you’re feeling fit, go trekking. Start in capital Lima, which you can explore on bike while learning all about the art, architecture and history of the city with your guide. Then spend three days in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest, spotting wildlife and enjoying activities such as canoeing, jungle walks and visiting a local village. No trip to Peru would be complete without a visit to Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley, and end your time in Cusco with a trip to the archaeological ruins in the Imperial City, before letting the kids loose in the Choco Museum for a chocolate-making workshop – this is when we recommend you book in for the Pisco Sour making class!

Nowhere else will you find a distillery that still grows its own barley, malts in its own traditional floor maltings, employs a team of coopers to tend its casks, a coopersmith to maintain its stills and has in its service the most experienced Malt Master in Scotland.

Get to taste the unique single malts this January at the new Windsor Arms.

SPORTS & FITNESS GOLF:

GOLF SECTION HAPPENINGS By Nic Merrow-Smith NEWS FROM THE GREENS With our Tour Season over for the year, all inter-club matches done and dusted, we resumed our search for a worthy Order of Merit winner and Club Champion.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP - SERAPONG Yes we know it’s elitism at its worst and $300 to play, but we just have to place Sentosa on the fixture list. Our faith was rewarded for we were blessed with a cool day and a very playable course yielding low scores and many pars. Simon Bird set the pace in a scorching 2-ball with Bill Christie. Playing from the 6,867 yard Blue Tee, Simon negotiated the bunkers, trees and water with just a single double bogey blemishing his card, returning with a winning gross score of 84. This compared favourably with the lowest score of the day, 80, posted by one of our guests, scratch golfer Mark Lamb. Graeme Jacombs and Ashley Morris got themselves in the mix but as is Serapong, it’s so easy to come a cropper at the head or tail of the dragon. With the odd triple bogey here and there, both returned scores of 88 to win their respective A and B Handicap Divisions but missed out on the best gross. Graeme locked in further prizes with the Longest Drive and a Nearest The Pin, with Steve Settle taking the 2nd Nearest The Pin Prize. In the Team Competition, golfers from Division A and B were paired. Prizes were awarded all the way down the order so we could get a photo of everyone on stage at the dinner. The top three teams were Mark Lamb and Charles Pierron, Nic MerrowSmith and Ashley Morris, and Steve Settle and Andrew Stearns. The format worked well and our hope is this will encourage members to bring a guest to partner in the future. I promise we will find some decent prizes next time.

28 Competitors, many of whom returned to The British Club for the Prize Giving.

Everyone is a hero and a winner at our Club Championship.

And just a mention of our prizes and sponsors: Club Champion Simon Bird wins a three-day, two-night stay at Aava Resort & Spa in Khanom, Thailand, sponsored by The British Club, Graeme Jacombs wins a $500 voucher sponsored by Urban Fairways, plus a green fee voucher for 4, sponsored by Raffles Country Club and a Spa Voucher sponsored by Fusion Spa. Steve Settle wins a pair of VIP tickets for the Masters of Football Asia. The Golf Section sponsored Titleist ProV1 balls by the box for winners and runners-up, with our own BC logo emblazoned on them. Thanks also to Wan Lay Chi and her team for organising a great day for us all.

OCTOBER MEDAL - RCC LAKE COURSE As if Serapong wasn’t challenging enough, 11 of us took on the Palm Course at RCC for double punishment. Ashley Morris ran away the victor with 40 points on what was a very difficult track, with Charles Pierron playing some very nice golf in my flight, to take the runner up spot. Nearest the pins were Bill Christie and Colin Allcard. The weather was cool and whilst everyone in Singapore was being drenched, we managed to avoid the lightning and rain, enjoying a sundowner with great views across the lake. He who dares; Runner-up Charles Pierron takes it on! 100m carry, 40m over sand, off a downslope, over water. Did he make it?

ORDER OF MERIT Nic Merrow-Smith leads the Order of Merit from Bill Christie by a slender 4.5 points. With the best 5 results of the year counting towards your total, there is still everything to play for. The Order of Merit concludes on Sunday, 11 December with our game at Ria Bintan.

CRICKET:

THE BRITISH CLUB CRICKET SECTION UPDATE By Gaurav Lakhanpal

The British Club Cricket team had a consistent outing in the Vets League once again, winning 2 games and finishing fourth in the league. The fifth Vets League was against Cuscaden and The British Club fielded a team of 9 players only as most of the regulars were not available. Cuscaden batted first and scored 239 for 4 in their allotted 30 overs with 4 of their batsman retiring. The British Club Captain Paul bowled a great spell of 5 for 28 and took 2 wickets, while David Bennett and Paul Twine bowled with economy rates under 6 in their 5 overs. The British Club batting started slow with Gaurav Lakhanpal and Andy Carter starting slow, consuming too many balls. David came in and played a cameo of 35 off 18 balls, while Gaurav played 27, Paul Twine 21, Todd Buck 21 and Paul McNee 14. Unfortunately it was not enough chasing 239 and The British Club fell way short of the target by scoring 174 in 27 overs as the game was stopped with 3 over to go. It was a good effort from the Club with just 9 players. The sixth and the last Vets game was against Anza, and Captain Ross Marsh won the toss on his birthday and decided to bat first. We had a good steady start with Ross and Adam scoring 30 and 35 respectively. No. 3 Shane scored a steady 31. Again the middle order push was missing until the late order charge by Paul McNee, hitting 25 off 23 balls and The British Club scored 163 in 30 overs. Anza didn’t sweat too much chasing down 163 which they did in 19 overs without losing any wickets, although they gave us a few chances which we couldn’t grab. Stand out bowling was by Gaurav Lakhanpal who bowled 4 overs for 22 runs. Next game was a regular fixture against the Woodpeckers and it was another thrashing for The British Club, now 3 in a row. Woodpeckers batted first and scored a mammoth 259 on a soggy outfield with 4 of their batsman scoring above 30. Only Nick Power managed to keep an economy rate below 6 and returned figures off 5 for 29 with 3 wickets. We had a disastrous batting display and only managed 86 for 9 in 28 overs with Ross top scoring with 21 while Todd Buck and Vaughan English scoring 17 apiece. Here are the season stats so far with 2 more games to go. It’s getting very tight for the bowling honours trophy between David Bennett and Paul McNee while Todd Buck has opened up a 48-run lead on Ross Marsh for batting honours. Batting Honours: Todd Buck – 415 Ross Marsh – 367 David Bennett – 307 Shane Sampson – 261 Simon Bignell - 231

Bowling Honours: David Bennett – 20 Paul McNee – 19 Paul Twine – 16 Rohit Bhatnagar - 15 Roger Kelly – 13

SQUASH:

RYDER CUP MAGIC By The Boaster

Any golf enthusiasts who saw the headline and plunged excitedly into this article, I’m afraid it’s not about golf, but don’t let that put you off. The Squash Section has good news for you. Every year, while Great Britain & Europe take on the Americans with the little white balls, The British Club Squash Section warms up their little black balls for a squash mega-fixture against the American Club. This year we entertained them at The British Club, and failed the basic test of being a good host by absolutely thrashing them. We played an unusual best-of-4 format to allow the possibility of halved matches. Most ended up at 3-1 and several were very close but by the 18th hole, The British Club had lost 1, halved 3 and won 9 matches for a massive 10 ½ – 2 ½ victory. Well played for us and perhaps our golfers will follow our example next time. In other results, The British Club destroyed Serangoon Gardens 5-0 in the most recent Cosmo League fixture. Jamie, Jim, Craig, Nick and returning guest star Neil Miller all won despite giving away handicap points. We are now third in the table with a Halloween Horror fixture against cellar-dwellers The Tanglin Club up next. It should be a Thriller. Finally, James Pickles is our latest British Club Box League champion and our recent monthly handicap round-robin was won by Ben Carpenter. Well played both.

TENNIS:

TENNIS SECTION REPORT By Mitali Das It may seem odd for some, especially those in the northern hemisphere to be playing tennis during Christmas time but that’s the beauty of living in the tropics. We can enjoy playing allyear round and this month there is an exciting opportunity for everyone to get in a hit before the holidays. The Red Hat Social will take place on 3 December. This fun-filled Christmas themed tennis social is open to all Members. Come in your Christmas cheer hats, antlers, or if you dare - a full Santa costume! It’s the perfect way to end the tennis year with some social cheer. For all our tennis ladies, there is the Ladies Tennis Ladder Social on 8 December. This is open to all women who play on the Singles and Doubles Ladder. The format is geared for competitive points collecting but with none of the hassle of organizing dates to play. Plan for a morning of fun play and stay on for coffee, lunch and chit chat. The Christmas Teen Social on 11 December is perfect for all budding teen tennis players. It’s an ideal way to meet other players of your level and to have a social hit during the Christmas break.

TENNIS TIPS – THE MENTAL GAME: OVERCOMING NEGATIVE GOALS OR NEGATIVE TARGETS We have all heard that tennis is a mental game as much as it is a physical one. What that means is having a clear head. We learn what we need to learn at training or coaching and then practice it during games. But when we enter a match we actually need to clear our head of all the noise and fears and focus on what we want to accomplish. We have to visualise where we want to place the ball and what our next shot will be. Once we can visualise these shots there is a higher percentage of making that desired shot. But if we focus on not hitting the net then the picture we visualise in our heads is that of the net and unfortunately a higher chance of hitting the net. This is called Negative Target or Negative Goals. So next time, picture what you want to do rather than what you don’t want to do. This is a skill and like all skills, it takes practice.
