STEPHEN K AMOS Stephen K Amos has charmed and entertained audiences all over the world with his natural, assured delivery and his honest, original material. Amos is filled with an almost child-like joy and exuberance and can find the funny in some of the most unexpected places. A gifted actor, Amos has impressed audiences and critics with his performances on stage and screen and has proved not only a gift for comedy but also for more serious roles. Comfortable as a performer, presenter, actor and guest there is no doubt that Amos will retain his position as one of the UK’s favourite comedians for a long time to come. As seen and heard on Live At The Apollo, BBC Radio 4, ITV, ABC, Channel 4 and at festivals and gala events worldwide.

SCOTT MITCHELL Scott Mitchell is a proud Permanent Resident of Singapore. Originally from Scotland, he moved to The Lion City long ago (way before MBS existed and even before Clarke Quay had a roof). Father of 4, he shares tales of his family life, foreign adventures and the contrast of daily life in the tropics compared to his childhood in Bonny Scotland.
MATT CHALMERS Matt burst onto the comedy scene fairly recently and has been wowing audiences with his disarming nervous charm ever since. Hailing from Glasgow, via the Middle East, he has performed in the UK, USA and South East Asia. It is rare gem of a comedian that hits the scene ready to go - Matt is one of those comedians.

Planning a move to the UK? Get your tax and finances in order first
By Huw Wedlock, The Fry Group As family or career circumstances change, there may come a time when you need to consider heading back to the UK – and before this becomes a reality, it is sensible to try to stay a step ahead and get a sense of the tax and financial issues involved. In the midst of packing, address changes, leaving parties and general arrangements, it is easy to forget that you can “potentially” save a lot of tax. For example, if you transition over a period of time into a new UK- based role and are spending time in your UK office you may unknowingly qualify for UK residency before you actually move. In addition, moving partway through a tax year may impact tax payable on any investments you hold and plan to sell here. Understanding the date you may become UK resident is now even more important following a recent tax change that will subject an offshore termination payment to UK tax in full if you are UK resident at any point in the year it is received. A good financial planner and tax adviser will be invaluable to help you navigate some of the potentially tricky tax matters. However, here are some things you should know and consider before you seek advice and make choices. 1. If possible, review your situation in the tax year prior to leaving and take some actions at that time. 2. Make sure you are up to date with your filing obligations with HMRC. 3. Review all your financial interests including property, accounts, life assurances, pensions and investments. 4. Identify the tax characteristics of each asset determining which should be kept, and which should be sold for maximum tax efficiency. 5.
Recently HMRC has become strict on its definition of what qualifies as resident and non-resident. The Statutory Resident Test lays out the qualifications. Be sure to check on the HMRC website and maintain a record of your “midnights” in the UK in the tax year prior and for ideally five years before that.
Getting the most favourable tax assessment on your total wealth can be a minefield. Sometimes the solutions are complex but are certainly still worth a thought. Some other considerations could include: • Pay special attention to your property assets, as Capital Gains Tax complications can arise, for which specialist advice is usually needed. • Particular tax efficiencies can arise through the choice of vehicle through which you invest.
Offshore investment bonds, foreign pension trusts, certain UK vehicles and trusts can all play an important part in delivering a higher net return after tax.
• If your spouse is not British, there are particular tax planning considerations you can take into account through the use of offshore assets and holding structures. Typically, a more diversified portfolio will give you greater tax breaks. ISAs, Income Tax allowances and Capital Gains Tax (CGT) allowances can all be used to minimise your annual tax bill. In the fast - changing world today, you may be required to move swiftly. If you have planned well ahead of time or at a minimum in the tax year before your return, the tax implications of your move back can be managed and controlled. Even if you’ve only recently decided that 2019 will be your last year in Singapore, make sure you think about these considerations. The good news is that much of this planning can be done well in advance so that if notice is short, you can still be ready to go. Getting your tax planning right will make your move home go that much more smoothly.

Top 5 Things women should do to protect their health Dr Nav is based in IMC Jelita and has a special interest in children’s and women’s health. Dr Nav speaks fluent Punjabi. Call 6465 4440 or visit www.imc-healthcare.com to make an appointment. 1. Have a regular pap smear In Singapore, there are approximately 190 new cases of cervical cancer a year. On average, 70 women die from cervical cancer yearly. A pap smear is a simple procedure in which cells are removed from the lower end of the womb (cervix). Pap smears are an easy way to detect early changes in the cells of the cervix. Over several years these changes may develop into cancer. If these changes are found and treated early, most cancers can be prevented. Having regular pap smears have been shown to reduce the likelihood of developing cervical cancer. Regular pap smears every 1 to 3 years are recommended at 21 years of age and continuing until 65 years of age. At IMC we can also test for HPV (Human Papilloma Virus). HPV is a common virus affecting both men and women. HPV is the cause of nearly all cervical cancer. HPV is very common in women under 30 and, in most cases, clears up by itself. However, in women with persistent types of infection where the virus survives for years, HPV can cause pre---cancerous conditions in the cervix that may lead to invasive cervical cancer. A pap test alone cannot identify HPV. The HPV test performed can detect any of the 13 types of HPV known to cause cervical cancer. 2. Keep up to date with your mammogram In Singapore breast cancer is the number 1 most common cancer in women. Besides the recommended monthly breast self examination, the best way to protect yourself from breast cancer is to go for regular screenings. A mammogram can detect tiny lumps that cannot be felt by the hand. Early detection, followed by treatment of the condition can result in better outcomes and lowers the risk of serious complications. Women aged 40-49 should have an annual mammogram and over 50s should have screening every 2 years. 3. Keep your vaccinations up to date As well as routine vaccines you may need (like a Tetanus booster every 10 years or an annual flu shot), living in the tropics and going on frequent short breaks around Asia may mean you are exposed to other vaccine preventable diseases. Book a consultation with your doctor at least 6 weeks before your trip so your doctor can discuss up to date advice about vaccines needed for that region as well as food and water hygiene, mosquito repellants and preventative prescription medications such as those for travellers diarrhea. 4. Exercise and diet Following a healthy diet and keeping your weight stable will put you at less risk of developing diabetes, cardiovascular disease as well as some cancers. Carrying extra pounds, especially around the abdomen, strains the heart and tips you towards diabetes. If you are overweight losing just 5-10% of your starting weight can make a big difference in your blood pressure and blood sugar. • It is important you keep hydrated and exercise regularly • It is sometimes hard to find the time but it is important to try and fit in at least 30 minutes of exercise daily. Although any amount of exercise is better then none! • Enliven your diet - add fruit and vegetables, whole grains, unsaturated fats, good proteins-(from beans, nuts, lentils, fish and poultry, and herbs and spices) • Avoid processed foods, salt, rapidly digested carbs from white bread, white rice and sugar-sweetened beverages • Finally avoid tobacco and drink alcohol in moderation 5. Get a yearly health check! Health screenings are replacing a ‘one size fits all’ yearly physical. Instead of every person getting the same exams and tests, it is important to discuss your individual needs with your Doctor. A discussion about your health history, family history and a thorough physical examination should prompt appropriate investigations and screenings, tailor-made to your specific needs and risk factors. At your appointment you can ask your Doctor about checking your cholesterol and glucose as well as other cancer screenings. Make your health a priority!

THE BRITISH CLUB
• MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT •
For this issue of Member in the Spotlight, we are pleased to feature daughters
Belinda, Brad, and their lovely two
– Stella and Chloe.
Belinda joined the Club in February just last month. She is the Managing Director of the Kellogg AMEA Snacks business. Find out more about Belinda, her busy profession, and her favourite Pringles flavour! 1) How did you hear about the Club and what made you join?
I had been to the Club for a number of work functions over the years when I have visited Singapore. I've always had a good feeling about it – somewhere that you could go and connect with friends, to socialise and generally enjoy some down time. We were really impressed with the facilities and enjoy the location of the Club as it is close to where we live so it made sense for us to join the Club.
2) Share with us more about you and your family. I am married to Brad and we have two daughters, Stella who is 9 and Chloe who is 5. We are from Sydney, Australia and relocated to Singapore in January this year. Brad and I have been very lucky over the years to live in countries outside of Australia including the USA, New Zealand and now Singapore. Our family loves experiencing new things including different cultures, food and we love to travel. We are all excited to be now based in a country that is the gateway to Asia and look forward to exploring the region!
3) Tell us more about your profession, and how you got to the top. I have worked at Kellogg for the last 21 years starting my career in marketing before moving across to sales. I have worked in various sales roles for 15 years in Australia, USA and New Zealand gaining invaluable developed market experiences. Most recently, I was the Managing Director of our ANZ business, spending 3.5 years in that role. I took on my new role earlier this year and am now running our Snacks business across Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa – it is an exciting time to be part of a high growth region. Getting to the top hasn’t always been easy but I think on the whole it takes humility, persistence, resilience and courage to make it in the business world today.
4)
We understand that Kellogg champions diversity and inclusion. Tell us why this is important and how you guys have achieved that.
Kellogg is a name that is synonymous with diversity and inclusion. Our founder, WK Kellogg was a pioneer in employing women in the workforce and reaching across cultural boundaries over 100 years ago. Diversity and inclusion is so important for the delivery of business results which is evidenced by much research, that proves that having a diverse workforce improves both the top and bottom line performance of a business. We also need to ensure that our workforce reflects the consumers that we serve, given we market in 180 countries across 6 continents. Having a diverse and inclusive workforce is a competitive advantage for our company and one we are very proud of!
5) What is your favourite Pringles flavour?
I look after the Pringles brand now as part of my portfolio and there are so many great flavours to choose from it is hard to pick just one. If I had to though, it would be Tom Yum – I love spicy food and this flavour is right up my alley. Second I am a huge fan of Salt and Vinegar. The Pringles tag line is so true – once you pop you really can’t stop!!

the one to find for all your catering and banquet inquiries.
International Women’s Day falls in March this year and what better way to celebrate it than with a feature of our experienced catering sales expert, Fauziah. Many ought to be familiar with Fauziah as the resident catering sales executive but some might not know that she started off in the membership department as an admin officer, 10 years ago. Back then, Fauziah got to know about the Club through her cousin, and decided to try out for the membership admin officer position. Sales and compliance have always been in her blood and she thrived at her job, eventually landing her the promotion to be the Membership Sales Manager. In 2015, she decided that she wanted to challenge herself and try something new. That’s when she joined the catering team, and has embraced the challenge till date. Prior to her adventure at the Club, Fauziah endeavoured in jobs like passenger service, compliance, and even worked on a Miami based cruise ship in her younger days! Read on as we find out more about Fauziah and her interesting journey so far!

Portuguese wine is the result of traditions introduced to the region by ancient civilisations, such as Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks and mostly the Romans. Portugal started to export its wines to Rome during the Roman Empire. Modern exports developed with trade to England after the Methuen Treaty in 1703. Portugal has two wine-producing regions protected by UNESCO as World Heritage: the Douro Valley and Pico Island. Portugal has a large variety of local kinds, producing a very wide variety of different wines with distinctive personalities. We are happy to have Roderic Proniewski here to share with us these wonderful Portuguese wines. Roderic is a wine specialist and wine educator who has been actively involved in various wine trainings, seminars and events in Asia and has been on the panel of judges for the prestigious ‘Michelangelo Tasting’ in South Africa and the IWC London Wine Challenge. Roderic is also being honoured as the ‘Top Finalist of Sommelier Mentor’ of 2017.

• SPORTS & FITNESS • TENNIS:
THE SCIENCE & ART OF TENNIS By Liza Rowan & Coach Sam Over the coming months, we’re delighted to introduce some articles and tips from our great coaches and top players within the section. This month, we hear from Coach Sam who has been with the Club for 5 years. Prior to joining, Sam focused on tennis development in his home county, Australia – where he worked with both kids and adults starting out in tennis and preparing for competitions. The Science & Art of Tennis! Tennis is both a science in that it’s a technical game; and an art form, which is captured in the phrase ‘feeling the ball’. The science being the biomechanics: what the body needs to do before the racquet makes contact with the ball. The art being the feel: holding the racquet with a gentle grip. The mastery of spin, angles, short and deep balls comes from being able to feel the ball on to the strings, then catching the ball and sending it back. We need a balance of both technical and feel to be good tennis players, and we need to be able to adapt our swing to whatever ball is coming at us. For example, if the ball is coming low, short or fast, we need a shorter swing and we need to use our legs to get down to the ball. The more time we have, the bigger the swing can be. So, how fast should we swing our racquet? We should always swing our racquet at a speed that gives us control and consistency. Control and consistency are the keys to winning matches and continuously improving our game. You are not going to drive your car at 80kmh out of the British Club and take the turn at that speed because you will lose control; this principle applies to the speed of your racquet upon contact. Therefore, learn how to use your body, how to feel the ball and adapt your swing to the ball you are receiving. On a final note, if you get frustrated about your tennis from time to time, as all the professionals do too, remember it takes a lot of hours and years to improve your tennis. Be gentle with yourself and keep it fun – the reason we all play this great game is because it’s a fun sport. Good luck to everyone on your journey of being a great tennis player! By Coach Sam
Tennis: the most perfect combination of athleticism, artistry, power, style, and wit. A beautiful game – Martin Amis
