learning on the job

I know I say this a lot, but I seriously have to be one of the most fortunate people on the planet. I don’t know of anyone who has as much fun at work as I do. Some of that fun does getting involve getting gussied up and attending some fabulous events, which obviously I enjoy, but the more compelling part of my job involves learning. The only time I complain is deadline day, and who could blame me for that? I usually learn at least one new thing every day. Just for this issue, I took a crash course in etiquette and learned about doll collecting. Had I not gone into journalism, I suspect I might have become a permanent student, if I had unlimited funds at my disposal. There’s just nothing like learning something new to put a spring in your step, and give you an edge in trivia. I guess I decided to tackle manners because I’ve seen such an abhorrent lack of them lately, and I’m not talking about social media — although that comes with its own challenges — I’m referring to real-life occurrences. People are harried, hurried and, in many cases, no longer filter their comments for civility. And don’t get me started on fellas who wear hats inside buildings and parents who allow their children to run around restaurants like banshees on a caffeine spree. As our experts state in the article, etiquette is all about putting others first and making them feel comfortable. Just remember The Golden Rule. Playing with dolls was not my thing growing up. I didn’t enjoy baby dolls, and preferred Barbies. I used to like to dress them and make up stories about what they were doing. Lauretta “Sissy” Baumgardner Lingle, whose father was the first landscape architect on Sea Island, has been collecting and dressing dolls as long as she can remember. Her doll

costumes have been commissioned by wellknown doll makers and she has won awards for her designs. A member of the Glynn Academy Class of 1957, a visit with Lingle means you’ll learn about dolls, but you’ll also cover a lot of local history as well. This past weekend offered another learning experience. The fifth annual Jewish Food & Culture Festival, hosted by Temple Beth Tefilloh, was held in Brunswick. Every year I attend I learn something new about the culture, food or music and I meet a ton of interesting people. It’s one of my favorite events, and based on this year’s crowd, I’m not the only one who feels that way. We also visited Bites & Bands, the newest iteration of the St. Simons Food + Spirits Festival, and made a stop by the Friends of Fort Frederica Charter Member Reception. Our friends at Golden Isles Arts & Humanities have several events on tap, including the Driftwood Bistro Bash to benefit the Golden Isles Penguin Project. If you haven’t been to a Penguin Project production, I highly recommend it. Designed for young people 10-25, the actors, all of whom have disabilities of some sort, put together a Broadway-style production each summer. The Bistro Bash will help cover costs of the production. Also coming up is the last Cinema Gourmet of the season with the cult classic “The Princess Bride” as the film. If, like me, it would be absolutely “inconceivable” for you to ever get enough of this film, make your reservations today. Details for both events are in this issue. On the remainder of our pages, you’ll see lots of people you know doing the things they love. In the meantime, embrace the pleasant temperatures, try to avoid the pollen, and enjoy the issue!

SEX, DRUGS AND

ROCK ‘N’ ROLL IN 1970S AMERICA

T

he newly released book, “Daisy Jones & The Six” (Ballantine), will take you back to another time and place. The time is during the pop culture Golden Age of the 1960s and 1970s; the place is the sun-drenched state of California. The author, Taylor Jenkins Reid, is a bestselling novelist and essayist from Los Angeles, and with “Daisy Jones,” she tells the story of a fictional rock band recording a hit album loosely based on Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours.” (The book, in fact, was inspired, the author has recently said, by Fleetwood Mac and Rumours.) If you’ve ever wondered about the complex romantic entanglements in bands such as The Mamas & The Papas or Abba, you’ll love this beautifully written tale of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll in an America that existed almost a half century ago. Daisy Jones, the center of the story, is one of those free-spirited, golden-haired, doeeyed beauties that Los Angeles was said to have been filled with in the 60s and 70s. Had she lived in New York, she surely would have been part of Andy Warhol’s entourage. She is a talented song writer and a singer with a gritty voice much like Janis Joplin’s. She’s the only child of rich liberal parents —her father is an artist, her mother a model, and they are too involved with their own egos to take care of her. By the time Daisy is 14, she’s hanging out on the Sunset Strip and losing her virginity to a drummer during a gloomy night at the Hyatt House hotel, which was also the scene of Led Zeppelin’s most decadent adventures. “Everyone talked about free love and how sex was a good thing. If you were cool, if you were hip, you liked sex,” says Daisy. Teenage groupies sleeping with rock stars was not just accepted, it was celebrated. The Six is a band whose members are busy trying to make their way around America’s blues and rock circuit. Founded by the moody, annoying — but charismatic — blue-collar Billy Dunne and his brother Warren, they end up in L.A. where they make a respectable debut.

Daisy, at the same time, is gaining a reputation as a promising but difficult singer whose record label doesn’t know what to do with her. When a British producer comes across both acts, he gets an idea: Daisy and The Six are good on their own, together they could be magic. Daisy and The Six join forces and their chemistry is explosive. It creates something hugely successful and extremely damaging: a band with two headstrong leaders who simultaneously hate and fancy each other. Audiences love them. Daisy is single and high on any drug she can get. Billy is married with kids and a recovering addict. Both want to be in charge. As it was with Fleetwood Mac’s 1977 album “Rumours,” which came out of the romantic clashes, feuds and the gigantic cocaine appetites of the band members, the very thing that makes Daisy Jones & The Six great is the thing that will destroy them. By the late 1970s, Daisy Jones & The Six are enormously “hot,” perhaps the hottest band in America. Daisy and Billy co-author an album, “Aurora,” which sells millions and makes them one of the biggest acts in the world, with critical and popular acclaim, hit songs and a sold-out tour. Then in July of 1979, after the band performs in Chicago, they suddenly break up, never to play together again. The book is an attempt to explain what happened with all those involved, from the band members to their friends and loved ones, reminiscing and revealing their version of events in the firstperson. Daisy Jones reads like you’re watching a documentary and it’s thoroughly engaging, especially if you like the music of the 60s and 70s. Jenkins Reid takes readers into the zany rollercoaster of life in a band: the idolization, opulent parties, creative satisfaction and the

fortunes made, all exciting things that can take a toll on minds and souls. Just about every character, except Billy’s long-suffering wife, seems almost perpetually drunk, high or involved in the wrong kind of love. The keyboardist and the rhythm guitarist have a secret affair that ends very badly. The lead guitarist is furious at being sidelined by domineering Billy, another “never wanted to be in a soft rock band anyway” and plans to leave. And there’s Daisy, worshiped by millions around the globe, but stumbling through a total wreck of a private life. Unapologetic in her sexuality and living life strictly on her own terms, she could easily have been a cliché but the author depicts her with empathy, and she comes across fascinating and real. “I’d chased this life with all my heart,” says Daisy. “But it became a hell I’d created myself, a cage I’d built and locked myself in. I came to hate that I poured my heart and my pain into my music because it meant I could never leave it behind. It made for a great show. But it was my life.” We live in a different time to the one described so accurately in Daisy Jones & The Six. Nowadays most of us realize that taking loads of drugs, sleeping with strangers and jetting around the world to make music with people you hate is not the best way to live a life. Still, this fabulously entertaining book sure

A LOOK AT

historical cocktails

O

ne of the best things about writing a column on spirits is doing the research on various cocktails and their ingredients. I’m often asked, after doing this column for a number of years, if I ever run out of topics. Well, yes … if I had to come up with topics I would, indeed, come up empty. But I read about cocktails and spirits and trendy bars online and in print and — fortuitously —another column can triumphantly emerge! I especially enjoy learning about historical cocktails, their origins, and often a bit about their creators. I ran across a recipe recently for a drink called The Panic Button. Now who amongst us wouldn’t want to know about the origin of that libation? It turns out this delicious drink was crafted by a bartender at Charleston’s Dewberry Hotel. He had been challenged to incorporate a liqueur called Averna into a drink that would hold sway in a fine Southern establishment. The bartender, as was I, was unfamiliar with Averna. He probably did the same research I did — and learned that Averna is an Italian liqueur that has been produced on the island of Sicily since 1868. It’s in the amaro family of spirits, meaning it’s a bittersweet herbal mixture that tends to be a bit syrupy. The liqueur is crafted by macerating (basically soaking) dried herbs and often fruit peels — and even certain tree barks — in an alcoholic base. The result is then aged and typically sweetened. Other versions are Fernet, vermouth and Luxardo. The challenge for the Dewberry bartender was how to incorporate this decidedly European liqueur into a drink that would appeal to Southern American tastes. It is

FOUNDATION MAKES DONATION The Terry Thomas Foundation recently made a contribution to Hospice of the Golden Isles (HGI). These funds are earmarked for information technology infrastructure for HGI. Susan Goodhue, executive director of the foundation, and board member, Dewey Benefield, presented the check to HGI CEO, Karen Brubaker Miller. Miller stated, “... The foundation’s recent grant award will help us improve our information technology infrastructure through the purchase of new laptops and tablets to ensure well-coordinated patient care.”

NEW GOLF CENTER S

makes its debut

ea Island recently unveiled an all-new, state-of-the-art Golf Performance Center at the Sea Island Golf Club. The new facility further solidifies Sea Island as home to the finest golf instructional center in the country. The 17,000-square-foot facility features industry-leading technology, six instruction and club fitting bays, a putting studio designed by world-renowned putting instructor Phil Kenyon, director of putting instruction at Sea Island, a full-service golf club workshop, gym with locker rooms, spacious retail area and indoor and outdoor meeting and event spaces. “The Golf Performance Center at Sea Island is dedicated to helping players play better and enjoy the game of golf with a holistic, comprehensive approach, regardless of their skill level, from beginning golfers to competitive juniors, touring professionals and everyone in between,” said Brannen Veal, director of golf. “This new facility combines the latest cutting-edge technology with the finest teachers in the country, taking what we provide to an even higher level than before.” In addition to Kenyon, the center’s elite team of instructors includes Golf Performance Center Manager and Master Club Fitter Craig Allan, Senior Director of Instruction Jack Lumpkin, Sports Psychologist and Performance Specialist Dr. Morris Pickens, Director of Fitness Randy Myers, and highly ranked instructors Justin Parsons, Gale Peterson, Jared Zak and Daniel Gray. The debut of the new Golf Performance Center is part of a nearly $30 million enhancement program at The Lodge at Sea Island. The new 18-hole Driftwood putting course, designed by Davis and Mark Love, opened in 2018, adding a fresh dimension to Sea Island’s legendary golf experience. In November 2018, The Lodge introduced six new cottages with 14 new sleeping rooms, a new oceanfront pool, pool house, extended practice facility and short game area, all overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Capping the program is the redesign and renovation of the Plantation Course, which along with the signature Seaside Course, serves as the site of the annual RSM Classic, a PGA TOUR FedEx Cup tournament hosted by Sea Island touring professional and resident Davis Love III. Love Golf Design is overseeing the renovation, which began in November 2018 and will reopen ahead of the 2019 RSM Classic in the fall. The pool, pool house, cottages and the new Golf Performance Center were designed by Hart Howerton, with interior design by Johnson Vann of St. Simons Island. The concept of the Golf Performance Center was born when Davis Love Jr., the late father of Sea Island touring pro Davis Love III, moved his family to Sea Island in 1977 to teach golf at Sea Island Golf Club, pioneering the idea of offering golf instruction year-round in a permanent location. Over the next decade, what was then known as the Sea Island Golf Learning Center grew, as he taught novices and pros alike. When Love Jr., died in 1988, Jack Lumpkin, Love’s long-time friend and fellow instructor, assumed leadership of the program, overseeing its progress in size and stature.

April 19 marks an important date in the founding of our nation and the beginning of the Revolutionary War when British soldiers fi red on American Patriots at Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts on April 19, 1775. Three years aft er the “shot heard ‘round the world,” the Georgia Continental Navy captured three British ships in the Frederica River near St. Simons Island, on April 19, 1778. The Frederica Patriots Day Celebration on St. Simons Island on April 13, commem-orates these two events of the American Revolution. The Fift eenth Annual Patriots Day Cel-ebration provides a unique opportunity to honor our Founding Patriots — men, women and children — who participated in the American Revolution.
