Discover the Golden Isles
S
pend a week in the Golden Isles and you’ll soon ďŹ nd why more and more people affectionately refer to our coastal nest as “the big little community.â€? They discover what every Golden Islander will tell you: There’s no place like home, like this home. Simply stated, we have all the necessities and amenities of a large city — hospital, malls, colleges, restaurants and miles of walking and biking trails to keep a person young — without the headaches (like trafďŹ c) that haunt the nation’s populated metro areas. You can even see the stars at night from your doorstep or bedroom window. But shhhhh — don’t tell anyone. Let it be our secret. For your convenience, as well as the convenience of our loyal readers, we have produced another edition of Explore. It’s your guide to great food and shopping, historic treasures, and fun, fun, fun! — The Editors

Shrimp & Grits Festival, Jekyll Island The Brunswick News
T
here’s always something to celebrate or a festival to attend in Brunswick and the Golden Isles, whether it’s tasting some of the finest Brunswick stew, shrimp or catfish you’ll ever find, saluting the nation on its birthday, testing your endurance in a 5-kilometer bridge run or sitting under the shade and in the cool ocean breezes listening to the accomplishments of musicians from around the world. No kidding, there’s something for everyone in the Isles. Coming up, for example, are Fourth of July celebrations on St. Simons Island, Jekyll Island and in Brunswick. All patriotic activities end in spirited explosions of colorful fireworks over the glimmering waters of a river, sound or ocean. If you like shrimp and grits, then Jekyll Island is the place you want to be in midSeptember. That’s when the Jekyll Island Authority, with the help of island residents, sponsors the annual Shrimp and Grits
Festival, an event that draws some of the finest cooks in the Isles and beyond. It’s also two days of great entertainment, including outdoor concerts, and fun. If you want to know something about the animal and marine life found on and off these shores, then check the event calendar for CoastFest, sponsored annually by the Coastal Resources Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Get close to real sharks (yikes!), learn about what you can do to preserve the Earth and hear how Native Americans lived long before Europeans stepped upon these shores. It’s a very educational, very fun and very memorable experience for all ages. If you happen to be around downtown Brunswick this autumn, you might want to sample the various recipes of Brunswick stew vying for one of the top prizes in the Brunswick Rockin’ Stewbilee competition. Teams will be cooking up their best brew for you and the judges at Mary Ross Waterfront Park. Don’t forget to bring the family dog and his or her best costume to march in the
Pooch Parade, one of the numerous ticklish activities planned at the river during this annual festival. Oh yeah, if you happen to be downtown in the spring (which would be a long time to hang around, but you can always go home and come back, right?), make sure you have your camera. Elvis is coming to Brunswick. OK, silly, not THAT Elvis. But be prepared to wonder as dozens of men from around the globe descend upon the port city of Brunswick, the waterfront and the stage at the Ritz Theatre to show their skills and talents in a Best Elvis performance competition. The Elvis Festival is always a great time and always a super-fun journey into the past. But wait, we’re skipping over too many in-between months, like December. There’s no place like the Golden Isles during the Christmas season. In addition to fine shopping, great sales and a friendly environment, there’s the festive display of lights on Jekyll Island, as well as numerous yuletide activities planned throughout the month, and a night of candles and life in the 19th century
at Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation. The community also honors and remembers its fallen heroes during a very patriotic gathering at the waterfront on St. Simons Island on Memorial Day. Taps at Twilight is a somber and moving memorial for the men and women who gave their lives for their country and a celebration of the freedom they’ve preserved for us all. In the spring, gather with thousands on the bluff on the Darien River in Darien (that’s the small city to the north) for fun, games, arts and crafts galore and great food as the coast comes together to honor Georgia’s fishing fleet and wish them a safe and bountiful season. If you like crawfish or catfish, there are festivals built around both in the small communities just to the south of Brunswick. Entertainment, arts and crafts and good homecooking are just a few of the highlights of these events. See List Page 5

Two Friends, St. Simons Island By SARAH LUNDGREN

The Brunswick News
runswick and the Golden Isles feature an endless variety of shopping opportunities. From clothing to accessories, antiques to home decor and more, there’s likely a place or two or three where you can find exactly what you’re looking for within your budget. On the mainland, there’s a lengthy list of shopping in different areas of town to suit any need. Newcastle Street provides a variety of antiques, jewelers, children’s items, books and furniture, thrift stores, even art and music stores. There are plenty of places to grab a bite to eat between shopping, or stop in one of the beautiful squares and enjoy the revitalization efforts going on downtown. Staples like Ned Cash Jewelers and Hattie’s Books are nestled among unique places like the Ritz Theatre, Brunswick
Actor’s Theatre, Art Downtown and delicious food features like Arte Pizza and Tipsy McSway’s. Moving down Gloucester Street, away from downtown toward U.S. 17, there are several antique dealers and consignment stores like Take Too to satisfy more tastes. There’s even the recently opened Waves, on U.S. 17 just across from the entrance to the F.J. Torras Causeway, for those with beach needs. On Ga. Spur 25, there’s Glynn Place Mall with staples like JC Penny’s, Belk and Sears, along with Gentlemen’s Outfitters and many small boutique-style stores. You’ll also find a Hallmark card and gift shop there. Featured in the various strip malls and shopping centers in Glynn County are popular stores like Target, Michael’s, Ross and T.J. Maxx, and even make-up and beauty providers like Ulta and Merle Norman. On St. Simons Island, businesses offer a
wide range of prices and styles, all within quick driving distance of the beach. Redfern Village off Frederica Road features some significant shopping options – art galleries, kitchen, bath and other home decor, clothing, gift items, jewelers, shoes and accessories and more. Nestled under massive trees, intermingled with restaurants and salons, are places like Two Friends boutique, Viola’s Market, a Tibi Outlet, and Oglethorpe Antiques and Interiors. Driving toward the St. Simons Island Pier from Redfern, those in search of something to wear can stop by Maggie’s, which features a variety of clothing, including gear to support the University of Georgia Bulldogs, or at the Yellow Canary for women’s clothing and Carousel for children’s items in Retreat Plaza. There’s also places like Low Country Walk Antiques and Accessories in Longview Plaza. Up and down Mallery Street, known as
Pier Village, are endless clothing shops for women and men of different ages like Meo’s Suite, Hope’s Boutique, Fresh Produce and Southeast Adventure Outfitters, right next door to furniture, home decor and gift shops and more like Dutchman’s. On the opposite end of the island, Shops by Sea Island offer a variety of clothing at places like Gentlemen’s and Lady Outfitters. There’s also the Cloister Collection and G.J. Ford’s Bookshop. Though the retail beach village on Jekyll Island is still under construction and set to open in December, there are places available for shopping along Pier Road, Beachview Drive and in the Historic District. There are several gift shops and souvenir stores on the island and stores that offer unique and even hand-made items that embrace the beauty of Jekyll Island. See List Pages 9-11

Neptune Park, St. Simons Island By MARTIN RAND III The Brunswick News
F
olks living in or visiting the Golden Isles have a plethora of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and stay
active. Whether you like being on land and exploring nature, relaxing on a beach or getting wet and wild in a river, you’ll find what you’re looking for in this coastal community. Ever wanted to go kayaking? SouthEast Adventure Outfitters can help with that. They offer single and tandem kayak rentals that can be paid for per hour of usage. Kayaks can be rented from either their Brunswick Boathouse on U.S. 17 or from their other location, the St. Simons Village Creek Landing, a peninsula surrounded
on three sides by tidal creeks and marsh at the end of South Harrington Road on St. Simons. If sitting in the water isn’t really your thing, SouthEast Adventure Outfitters also offers paddleboarding rentals, where people stand with a long paddle on what looks like a surfboard. Glynn County has become a destination for paddleboarders over the years, especially during the annual St. Simons Island SUP Challenge. This event is going into its fifth year this October, and the paddleboarding competition has helped attract numerous people to the area. Summer Waves Water Park gets people cooled off from the summer heat in a more controlled water environment. The water park on Jekyll Island features six water slides, a lazy river, a wave pool and a kiddie area for young swimmers.
You might also try the Neptune Park Fun Zone on St. Simons Island or one of the public swimming pools at Howard Coffin Park and Selden Park, both in Brunswick. An admission fee is required at the waterpark and at all swimming pools. For family fun, there’s miniature golf courses on St. Simons Island and on Jekyll Island. Being outside doesn’t mean you have to get wet. Glynn County offers bicycle shops galore that will allow people to rent or purchase a bike to explore the lush green environment of the Golden Isles. Cyclists can enjoy riding their bikes on about 60 miles of bike trails along U.S. 17, Jekyll Island and St. Simons Island. A non-profit organization based in Savannah is working on six projects that will create one super-long sightseeing trail that stretches from Brunswick to McIntosh
County while increasing the miles of bike trails to about 90. Of course, you can’t talk about the Golden Isles without mentioning its beaches. St. Simons Island beach and Jekyll Island beaches give people the opportunity to swim, wind surf or body surf or you can just simply bask in the rays of the sun. Blythe Island Regional Park also has a beach on a lake. It also offers canoe and kayak trails, bike trails through the woods and shaded paths for hikers. You will also find camping opportunities on Jekyll Island, Blythe Island and mainland Glynn County. Like skateboarding? Check out the skateboard parks on St. Simons Island and at North Glynn Park, which also includes a paved trail for walking. See List Page 17

hether it’s an established PGA Tour professional, an up-andcomer looking to earn his tour card or a new student athlete at College of Coastal Georgia, the Golden Isles is an attractive place to live for golfers. It’s not a bad place for the casual player, either. And if you’re looking to retire to a golf community or vacation in one, there are plenty of private clubs worth checking out. A total of 20 courses, 18 of which are 18hole courses, are spread out throughout the Golden Isles, from the mainland of Brunswick, Sea, Jekyll and St. Simons islands, and neighboring McIntosh and Camden counties. St. Simons Island is home to nine PGA pros, including 2007 Masters Champion
Zach Johnson, 2009 U.S. Open Champion Lucas Glover and this year’s RBC Heritage winner, Matt Kuchar. With several colleges to choose from, Coastal Georgia senior golfer Chase Miller said the numerous golf courses at his disposal here was one of the main reasons he chose to sign with the Mariners. “I went to Sea Island (Golf Club), and there was the ocean next to the driving range,” Miller said. “It’s a good place to hang out for four years.” Sea Island Golf Club features three championship courses on St. Simons Island — Seaside, Plantation and Retreat — and is the host club for the The McGladrey Classic, an official PGA Tour event that became part of the FedExCup schedule this past year. The Classic first began in 2010. Sea Island, also the home base of the renowned Sea Island Golf Learning Center,
was ranked No. 10 on Golf Magazine’s 2014 list of best golf resorts to play. St. Simons Island is also home to Frederica Golf Club, located on the northern end of the island in a “showcase” development originally founded by the Jones Family of Sea Island fame. Two other St. Simons Island courses — King and Prince, Home of the Hampton Club, and Sea Palms Golf and Tennis Resort — offer private memberships and public play year-round. Jekyll Island Golf Club, featuring 63 holes just a stone’s throw from the beach, makes for one of the more attractive public options in the area. Nestled among the island’s natural wildlife, the club features three 18-hole courses — Indian Mound, Oleander and Pine Lakes — as well as the beach-side nine-hole Great Dunes course. On the mainland, the private commu-
nity consists of Brunswick Country Club. There’s also Heritage Oaks Golf Club on Oak Grove Island and Coastal Pines Golf Club in north Brunswick. All are open to the public. Sapelo Hammock Golf Club, located north of Darien in Shellman Bluff, is home to the National Golf Association’s NeSmith Classic. To the south, in Waverly, the public can play at The Golf Club at Sanctuary Cove, a Davis Love III/Fred Couples signature course. Further down Interstate 95, Kingsland is home to Laurel Island Golf Club, a links course open to the public, and Osprey Cove Golf Club, a private community. For great values, several courses in the area offer discounted rates through online golf booking websites. See List Pages 26 and 27

isten closely and you might hear echoes that have reverberated since the 1700s across the islands, waterways and marshlands of the Golden Isles. Listen and you might hear British Gen. James Oglethorpe, founder of the Georgia colony, barking orders or checking out the process on the construction of Frederica Town and Fort on St. Simons Island. Gen. Oglethorpe considered the 1736 fort vital for the protection of English claims against the Spanish, who settled in Florida and had roving eyes, like all the other Europeans settling in the new land in those days. His suspicions proved to be on the mark. Six years later, in 1742, the Spanish would
test England’s resolve to hold onto to its lands in what today is known as the Battle of Gulle Hole Creek at Fort St. Simons – where Gascoigne Bluff is today – and the Battle of Bloody Marsh, a site that can be visited during park hours on Demere Road on St. Simons Island. And while on St. Simons Island, check out the remains of Fort Frederica National Monument. You’ll learn there how British soldiers lived, the problems they faced (other than the Spanish) and what they ate. Anyone for opossum stew? Just kidding. Or are we? Don’t leave the area without visiting historic Christ Church, Frederica, and gardens. You won’t be disappointed in this 1884 structure. Tours are offered.
On the opposite end of St. Simons Island, to the south, you’ll find a lighthouse that still works, as well as a maritime museum and a refurbished house where men in the U.S. Coast Guard once slept and ate. All are open for tours, and we dare you to test your stamina by climbing to the top of the lighthouse. The sight from above is, what can we say, one to climb for. You might also check out the public pier on the St. Simons Island Sound and contemplate what the English saw centuries ago from a similar vantage point. There was a time, however, when the British were not welcome ashore. The first time the colony “rolled in” the red carpet was, of course, during the American Revolutionary War. American patriots even managed to
capture a few British ships off St. Simons Island when Georgia, one of the original 13 colonies, joined the fight for liberty. You’ll find a plaque dedicated to this Georgia’s Navy at Fort Frederica National Monument. To the south, across the sound, Jekyll Island, you’ll see how the nation’s first batch of millionaires lived. We hate to name drop, but do any of these sound familiar: Astor, Vanderbilt, Pulitzer and Morgan? They were among the giants who looked upon Jekyll Island as their seasonal playground, and each millionaire built his own “cottage” on the backside of the island on Jekyll Creek. Tours of these “cottages” are available daily at Millionaires Village. Continued on page 29

EXPLORE You might want to check out the Jekyll Island Museum and the ruins of the Horton House on the island. The two-story tabby house was originally built in the 1730s by Major William Horton, one of Gen. Oglethorpe’s officers. It was damaged by the Spanish during their raid on the Georgia coast, rebuilt and later occupied by the family of French officer Poulain du Bignon after the American Revolution. On the south end of Jekyll, at South Dunes picnic area, you’ll can read about the last documented slave ship, The Wanderer, to touch American shores in 1858, after the African slave trade was outlawed. It came in at the South end of Jekyll and was later captured. Stand at Overlook Park on U.S. 17 in Brunswick and try to imagine what 19th century poet Sidney Lanier saw when he penned that beautiful poem, “The Marshes of Glynn.” He was referring to the expansive marshes on the saltwater edges of Glynn County. The community honored the poet by naming structures, streets and
buildings after him, including the tallest structure in the community, the cable-stayed Sidney Lanier Bridge, which spans the Brunswick River. As you cross the Sidney Lanier Bridge, gaze down the right headed south, toward the city, where the land meets the river and you’ll see the skeletal remains of the structures used to launch nearly 100 Liberty ships built in Brunswick during World War II. On the outskirts of the city, on U.S. 17, you’ll find HofwylBroadfield Plantation, today a state historic site operated by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. If you have time and love oak trees, you might want to stop and look around his rice farmturned-dairy farm. There’s a raft of history in nearby McIntosh, Liberty and Camden counties, too. In Darien, there’s Fort King George
History remodeled Orange Hall, built in St. Marys in 1838. It’s the same city where you can catch the ferry to Cumberland Island National Seashore. On this well-preserved barrier island you’ll discover the Dungeness Ruins, the 1763 homesite of Gen. Nathaniel Greene, an American Revolutionary War hero, and later, after a major, Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation major upgrade, a 1884 residence for Thomas – named after you know who – and just Carnegie and his wife, Lucy. north of that there’s Fort Morris, where You’ll also find Plum Orchard, a 20,000 Georgians successfully fended off the first square foot mansion built in 1898 by Lucy British attack on their soil during the war Carnegie, and the First African Baptist for independence. Nazzaro’s Restaurant, St. Simons Island By KELLY QUIMBY

The Brunswick News
estaurants and eateries in the Golden Isles offer more than just good food. Most offer a dining experience second to none. Many establishments in Glynn and in the surrounding coastal counties give patrons the option of sitting inside or outside. Some even offer marshside, dockside or beachside views. At the Redfern and Pier villages on St. Simons Island, diners have the choice of several fresh seafood establishments in addition to down-home country cooking, Italian, Mexican and barbecue dishes. As the sun sets on the island, many of the
restaurants take on a second life as watering holes, where regulars rub elbows and perhaps even share a plate of oysters with vacationing first-timers. Just over the Sea Island Causeway, the resort provides the epitome of exclusivity with fine dining at the Beach Club and five-star Cloister. There’s also the five-star Lodge on St. Simons Island. On the mainland, visitors will find numerous hot spots for dining, many of which have become institutions in their own right. Downtown, there are a few locally owned favorites with menus that encompass more than your average burgers and fries. Prefer something more traditional? There’s plenty of cafes and chain establishments around the interstates and in other
shopping centers for those who’d rather stick to what they know. On Jekyll Island, guests can sample fresh catch right off the dock while watching cars cross bridges and boats drift by. A forthcoming partnership with the College of Coastal Georgia will give visitors to the state-owned island a beach view dining experience at Fins. A few miles to the north, in Darien, there’s plenty of shrimp to sample, and you can see the trawler that brought your dinner right from your seat. A little further south, Kingsland and St. Marys offer options from places ranging from the Mediterranean Sea to Asia, and from Southern barbecue to Mexican. In addition to the variety of views, dining
in the Golden Isles offers a wide choice of atmospheres. Whether you prefer black tie or jeans and flip flops, there’s something for everyone and for every taste. Seafood may reign supreme in this coastal region, but it’s not exclusive. Chefs in Glynn, Camden and McIntosh counties aren’t afraid to try something new and adventurous. Though it’s the coast, it is also certainly the South, and that’s reflected in the food and the hospitality. The Golden Isles offer more options than can truly be experienced in a single trip. It’s worth a second, third and fourth visit just for the dining itself. See List Pages 34 and 35

Historic Brunswick Ghost Tours By BRITTANY TATE

The Brunswick News
isiting the Golden Isles boasts more than just a relaxing vacation on the pale cream sand of East Beach on St. Simons Island and the golden shores of Driftwood and Glory beaches on Jekyll Island. It even transcends spending countless hours hitting the greens and gorging on fresh seafood from local markets scattered across the mainland and its barrier islands. It is a destination steeped in history. And a stay in the picturesque seaside setting just wouldn’t be complete without touring some of its historical landmarks and taking a short journey through the lore and legends of the area that can be traced back to the early 1700s. For vacationers who are fascinated with
the “living dead,” there are several ghost tours available that offer unearthly encounters with the supernatural. On the mainland, take a walking tour through the residential area and business district of historic Downtown Brunswick and help “catch” spirits using ghost hunting equipment. Or take a ghostly hearse ride – with the admission of a toe tag – through Old Town and learn of the unknown and untold hauntings of this otherwise peaceful coastal town. Wanting to see walking spirits on Old St. Simons and the waterfront or get acquainted with the ghosts of the club era on Jekyll Island? Lamp-lit tours of well-known areas of St. Simons Island, including the St. Simons Island Lighthouse, are available throughout the year, while walking tours inside the haunted century-old cottages on the 240-acre historic district of Jekyll Island are held only in October.
If you are a history buff or enjoy a good story, take a trolley tour through much of St. Simons and Jekyll islands and delve into the coastal lore of popular historical landmarks, such as the Bloody Marsh Battle Site, Fort Frederica National Monument, Retreat Plantation and Christ Church, Frederica. A few offer wheelchair accessibility. Want to take a more scenic route that explores the nesting grounds of the nearextinct loggerhead turtle or the beaches, maritime forests and salt marshes of Jekyll Island? Stop by the Georgia Sea Turtle Center and take a guided tour to some of the loggerhead turtle hot spots that dot the island’s pristine coastline. More of a birder? Tidelands Nature Center leads landscape walks that offer birding enthusiasts a closer view of the coast’s feathery friends. There is also an abundance of shrimping
and dolphin excursions that motor along inland and marshland waters of Brunswick and St. Simons and Jekyll islands. From the lower Altamaha River to the Jekyll Wharf, sightseers can study the coast’s ecosystem that includes marine species like sand sharks, horseshoe crabs, puffer fish and bottle-nosed dolphins. Or top off a fun day trip with a sunset boat cruise that departs from the Morningstar Marina on St. Simons and watch as the skies fade into pink and purple hues. Looking to take flight? Open cockpit, biplane scenic tours offer vacationers an overall view of the miles-long coast of Georgia, flying over the Sidney Lanier Bridge and crossing over beaches on St. Simons and Jekyll islands and parts of Cumberland Island. Jekyll Creek, Jekyll Island By DAVE JORDAN
The Brunswick News
W
hether looking for a fun family outing or just a little peaceful time on the water, the Golden Isles boasts a wide array of fishing locations, opportunities and “honey holes” to satisfy most any angler. First-time fishermen and seasoned outdoorsmen will revel in the chance to drop a line in the Atlantic Ocean, the Altamaha River or any number of inlets along the South Georgia coast. “Whether you’re looking for something for the frying pan or just a big fish
story, Coastal Georgia is the place to be if you’re an angler,” said Spud Woodward, director of the Coastal Resources Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. “An abundance of public boat ramps, marinas, piers and beaches offer access to a variety of fishable waters from black water streams like the Satilla River to vast expanses of tidal creeks and marshes to the open Atlantic Ocean. Skilled and experienced fishing guides are available to help novices have a productive day on the water,” said Woodward. Want to catch the big ones? Booking a trip with a veteran charter captain and heading to the high seas could be the
ticket and a variety of hearty species such as king mackerel, amberjack and cobia to snapper, mahi mahi and wahoo could be the target. Prefer to stay nearer to shore? Sea trout, flounder, tripletail, red drum, whiting, ladyfish and black drum are the mainstays nearshore and in the rivers, along with tarpon that can exceed 100 pounds — and can be caught right off the beach in places. Include in that potential catch a wide variety of sharks. Freshwater anglers, too, will delight in the variety of species populating the rivers and streams of the Golden Isles. There, an array of bream, catfish, white perch, bass, mullet, redfish, crappie and shellcracker can
be found. Crabbing, too, is a popular endeavor, be it off the St. Simons Island Village Pier or any number of piers and bridges in the area. All in all, there is something for every fisherman to enjoy when it comes to fishing in Coastal Georgia. “Our neighbor to the south may be known as the Fishing Capital of the World, but Coastal Georgia is fast gaining a reputation as a place with diverse fishing opportunities in what many find to be one of the least crowded, but most picturesque settings in the Southeast,” Woodward said. Day Trips
Cumberland Island By GORDON JACKSON The Brunswick News
R
esidents have plenty to occupy themselves in the Golden Isles and surrounding counties, but when they are looking for a quick getaway for a day, there are a lot of choices. There’s Savannah to the north and Jacksonville and St. Augustine, Fla., to the south. Savannah and St. Augustine, two cities steeped in history, have plenty of places to keep visitors occupied for an entire day, regardless of their tastes. While Savannah is slightly closer, about 78 miles from Brunswick, St. Augustine, at 106 miles, is still within a reasonable drive on Interstate 95. Both cities boast large historic districts with shops, restaurants, live entertainment and other businesses designed to cater to tourists. Jacksonville, which is only 70 miles away, also offers family friendly-features. For those looking for a more sedate get-
away, a day trip to Cumberland Island National Seashore might be the perfect choice. When passengers disembark from the ferry at the Sea Camp Dock in St. Marys, they enter a world that feels a thousand miles away. They will walk on trails through wooded areas with live oaks so large the branches sag to the ground. Along the walk to the beach it’s very likely visitors will see a variety of wildlife from horses and turkeys to armadillos and feral hogs. During sea turtle nesting season, visitors walking along the beach may see crawl signs indicating where nests may have been laid. There are no concession stands or paved roads on the barrier island, which is virtually unspoiled. Bring a picnic basket, hat, sunscreen and plenty of water for the day. Camping is also available at the national seashore. About an hour’s drive from Brunswick on U.S. 82 is what may be the most famous swamp in the nation, Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. The 402,000-acre refuge is home to a large number of endangered or
threatened species, including the red-cockaded woodpecker, American bald eagle and the wood stork. The American alligator, which is often seen sunning along the banks of lakes, rivers of canals in the swamp, was formerly listed as an endangered species, but its population has recovered to the point that it has been taken off the Endangered Species List. Camping is offered at Stephen C. Foster State Park, on the west side of the refuge, or on platforms in the swamp, accessible only by boat. A concessionaire offers boat tours at the Folkston entrance. Boat rentals are also available. Other areas where visitors can get back to nature are Tybee Island, Sapelo and Little St. Simons islands, all rich in history and nature. Those seeking an educational experience can visit the Museum of Science & History in Jacksonville. The museum features interactive displays such as The Body Within, where visitors enter through MOSH’s larger than life mouth, stroll down the digestive
tract and exit out of the more creative ways to teach visitors about the human body. Other displays include one on manatees, dolphins and whales, the Florida Naturalist Center, a planetarium, a display about energy and changing exhibits featuring museum artifacts. The Jacksonville Zoo features a 9,000square-foot aviary where birds such as the yellow-billed stork, white-bellied bustard, lesser flamingos and turacos fly about freely. Animal enclosures include cheetahs, lions, rhinos, elephants, birds, jaguars, giraffes, great apes, amphibians and others. Visitors can pet and feed stingrays at Stingray Bay and see other displays such as Monsoon Asia, Butterfly Hollow, Land of the Tiger, Australian Adventure and a play park and splash ground. For residents in the Golden Isles, there are always plenty of choices when it comes to finding an activity a short drive away. It’s simply a matter of choosing which one. See List Page 46
