Brunswick High PIRATES 2014

Pirates drop down in class, but no picnic awaits By DAVE JORDAN

D

The Brunswick News

ropping from Class 6A to Class AAAAA for the current reclassification period, the Brunswick High football team will have no easier time of it in 2014. The Pirates’ schedule includes region games with very familiar and pesky foes, plus non-region contests with neighbors to the north and south who would like nothing better than to trip up Victor Floyd’s team. The season begins Friday in Darien against Class AA McIntosh County Academy, a team boasting a new head coach in Gary Mintier and a new philosophy as the program begins a new era. Week 2 finds the Pirates in the friendly confines of Glynn County Stadium but as the road team Aug. 29 in the annual City

Championship with crosstown rival — and now fellow Region 3-AAAAA member — Glynn Academy, which also boasts a new head coach and new schemes on both sides of the ball. This early game on the league slate should prove pivotal in the region standings as the winner will have an early leg up on the rest of the league. An off week gives the Pirates extra time to prepare for a Sept. 12 home date with an old nemesis from its days in Class 6A, the Camden County Wildcats, who have defeated Brunswick in their past eight meetings, including the past two seasons when both teams competed in Region 1-6A. The following Friday, Sept. 19, begins a string of seven straight region games, beginning with Effingham County at Glynn County Stadium. After that, in succession, Brunswick plays

at Statesboro — recently of Class AAAA and always a tough team on its home field — faces South Effingham at home, goes to Coffee, hosts Richmond Hill, goes to Bradwell Institute and comes back home for the regular season finale against Ware County, the league’s defending champion. An off week before playing at Coffee does give the Pirates a breather during that region skein, but the gauntlet of games that begins with the Week 2 contest with Glynn Academy should prove extremely challenging for the blue and gold. Some positives for the Pirates in 2014: six of their 10 regular season games will be at Glynn County Stadium, and three of their tougher opponents will have to play Brunswick between those bricks. One downside is, two rough region foes, Statesboro and Coffee, will get to play the Pirates on their home turf.

Head coach spotlight: Victor Floyd Victor Floyd

Brunswick High Do you have any pregame rituals or superstitions? “None. I really don’t.” What is your favorite song? “Happy,” by Pharrell Williams. What is your favorite television show? “Law and Order.” What is something about you that most people don’t know? “I played an instrument in middle school, in the band, in sixth, seventh and eighth grade. Then they said ‘varsity football or band,’ so that was a no-brainer for me.”

Who is more competitive, you or your wife? “Me.” Who would you want to play you in the movie of your life? “Samuel L. Jackson. I thought ‘Coach Carter’ was pretty good.” What’s your secret talent (juggling, hula-hooping, handstands, etc.)? “I am a great shower singer. A world-class shower singer.”

Victor Floyd begins his seventh year on the sidelines as the head coach of the Pirates and is the longest tenured head coach at the five area schools. What is your favorite A native of Nichols, S.C., Floyd came to Brunswick board or card game? High from Chester High in South Carolina where he “Spades for cards and took the Cyclones to the state’s Class AAA championprobably checkers for the ship game in his final season. board game.” Floyd is 36-30 as the Pirates head coach and boasts a 5-1 mark against the school’s crosstown — The Brunswick News rival, Glynn Academy. His Pirates won region titles his first two seasons at the helm.

Players to watch

A.J. Jackson #2 athlete When you can do just about everything on a football field, you earn the word “athlete” by your name in the position column. A.J. Jackson is just that, a threat all over the field for the Pirates who led his league in both catches and receiving yards in 2013 and also can pass, run and return kicks.

Jackson Gibbs #91 OFFENSIVE LINEMAN At 6-foot-3, 265 pounds, Gibbs has plenty of size to clear holes for his teammates running behind him and to protect the Pirate passers. A center by trade, Gibbs will also see time at guard and as Brunswick’s long snapper.

Carlos Pickett #5 ATHLETE

Like teammate A.J. Jackson, Pickett is too good in too many places to just be labeled by one position. Look for him to line up mainly in the defensive backfield for the Pirates, but also look for Pickett to make big plays at every turn. Already committed to Marshall, Pickett was one of the Pirates’ best all-around players in 2013 and that scenario seems likely to be repeated in his senior season.

Amarrious Wilson #15 running back Yet another dangerous weapon at Victor Floyd’s disposal, Wilson burst on the scene in 2013 to rank 10th in rugged Region 1-6A in rushing — second only among BHS runners to quarterback Cory Dixon. Averaging 7.3 yards per carry, the speedy senior will be called upon to tote the mail again in 2014.

KEYS TO WINNING START FAST

The Pirates have struggled in the early going in recent seasons, going a combined 4-5 in their first three games since 2011. With three of their first four this season in the friendly confines of Glynn County Stadium, a fast start is possible and would be a boon to their fortunes.

REPLACE KEY PEOPLE

Like many teams, Brunswick High lost solid players to graduation. Finding offensive threats to fill the shoes of Cory Dixon, James Richardson, Ishaun Armstrong and Grant Fagan, plus defensive stalwarts Jacari Williams, Quan Tobler and Damien Baker will be paramount for BHS.

?

The Pirates’ roster lists three quarterbacks and boasts another who has seen time under center in the past. Whomever wins the job to Victor Floyd’s satisfaction will have big shoes to fill and be critical to the Pirates’ success.

Glynn Academy RED TERRORS 2014

Terrors tackle tough foes out of the gate By DAVE JORDAN

The Brunswick News

F

our tough contests right out of the gate highlight the 2014 schedule for the Glynn Academy football team. New head coach Rocky Hidalgo and his Red Terrors will jump right into the fire in their season opener Friday with a home contest against Class AAAA power Wayne County. The Yellow Jackets under Jody Grooms won 11 games in 2013 — including a 2713 win over the Terrors at Glynn County Stadium — and advanced to the semifinal round of the state tournament. Week 2 finds the Red Terrors again at

home and facing crosstown rival Brunswick High in the annual City Championship. Those two teams have faced off 70 times with the Pirates holding a 37-31 edge with two ties mixed in. Brunswick, now a member of Region 3-AAAAA with Glynn, has won the past two meetings and seven of the past eight, so Hidalgo’s bunch will no doubt want to stem that tide as well as get off to a nice start in league play. Sept. 5 sends the Terrors to Kingsland and a date with Class 6A stalwart Camden County, followed by an off week before going to Douglas to face new region foe Coffee. That tilt with the Trojans at Jardine

Stadium will begin a string of seven region games over an eight-week span. Glynn hosts Richmond Hill on Sept. 26, goes to Bradwell Institute on Oct. 3 and comes back home to face defending league champion Ware County on Oct. 10. After a much-needed off week following Ware, the Terrors hit the road to face Effingham County on Oct. 24, then come home to host Statesboro on Halloween. The regular season and region finale, on Nov. 7, pits Glynn against South Effingham in Guyton. All told, Glynn faces six teams that made the postseason in 2013, with those six squads combining for eight playoff victories.

Rocky Hidalgo was hired away from Class 6A Walton High School in Marietta in late April to replace Rob Ridings as Glynn’s head football coach. A former offensive lineman at Rhodes College in Tennessee, Hidalgo went 40-18 in five seasons at Walton, including a trip in 2011 to the Class AAAAA state final when his team finished 14-1. Glynn is Hidalgo’s second head coaching stop.

CORDARRO STOUTE #8 DEFENSIVE LINEMAN

Zach Lamper #11 QUARTERBACK Sporting a new number in 2014, senior Zach Lamper will be counted on to lead the revamped, up-tempo offense his new head coach and his staff have brought to the Red Terrors. Lamper is an excellent runner and a solid game manager. His ability to find and connect with the bevy of targets available to him in the rapid-fire scheme will dictate how explosive this Glynn team can be.

His last name all but describes the man-child that is senior Cordarro Stoute, the key to the Glynn defense and a player who makes his presence known early and often once the whistle blows. Lining up mostly at tackle along the GA front, Stoute will anchor an athletic Red Terrors defense that figures to be better than advertised.

GARRISON HURD #3 FULLback/LINEBACKER

If his coaches would let him, Garrison Hurd would play every down of every game — on both sides of the ball. At fullback, he is a bull of a runner who punishes defenders as much as he gets punished. At middle linebacker, he does battle in the trenches with the best of them.

KEYS TO WINNING ADAPT AND IMPROVE

The Red Terrors are having to learn a new offense and defense under their new head coach. How well they take their lessons from the practice field to the Friday night lights will play a huge part in their final record.

SPREAD THE WEALTH

Glynn has a wealth of athletic playmakers on both sides of the ball, particularly on offense. From Lamper and Hurd to D.J. Dallas and Adrien Cross and beyond, the players are there to make the offense hum.

MANAGE THE SCHEDULE

The schedule-makers were kind to the Terrors in 2014 as the bulk of their key region contests are at home. Win out at home in league play and split on the road, and Glynn will be sitting pretty come playoff time.

f for nothing else, this year’s Frederica Academy football team will be remembered as being the first group of Knights to tackle Georgia Independent School Association Class AAA. The football Knights are making more of a leap than a jump in going to Class AAA from Class A, where they toiled the last three seasons. The Knights will be led by a new quarterback following the graduation of Max Bourne, who led the team to the Class A state championship in 2012. Junior Nick Harrison takes over under center as the Knights transition to the highest classification in the Georgia Independent School Association, which naturally brings with it tougher competition. The Knights will play their first two contests on the road, opening the season Aug. 29 in Savannah at St. Andrew’s School, which plays in the South Carolina Independent School Association.

The Knights hit the road again Sept. 5 to play their first Class AAA opponent, non-region Tiftarea Academy, in Tifton. Another good test for the Frederica team will come in its home opener Sept. 12 against Valwood, last season’s Class AA state runner-up. Frederica will play its homecoming game Sept. 19 against Bethesda Academy, another SCISA opponent, before a showdown with rival Robert Toombs Christian Academy. Robert Toombs was last season’s Class A state champion and is the same bunch that lost to the Knights in the dramatic, somewhat unbelievable state championship game in 2012. Robert Toombs is moving up to Class AA this season. Competing in Region 2-AAA, which consists of four other schools, the Knights will begin their league slate at Trinity Christian on Oct. 3 and then host Pinewood Christian Oct. 10. FA will travel to Statesboro to call on traditional rival Bulloch Academy before finishing region play at home against Edmund Burke Academy. The Knights wrap up their regular season at home on Halloween against Class AA foe Monsignor Donovan.

Players to watch Hollis Veal #13 RUNNING BACK/DEFENSIVE BACK Two-way player Hollis Veal has seen more and more action on the field each season and now will be counted on to both carry the ball on offense and defend in the secondary. The talented junior is speedy and smart and a key to Frederica’s success.

Nick Harrison #7 Quarterback/DEF. back Trying to follow in the footsteps of perennial all-star Max Bourne, junior Nick Harrison takes the reins of the Frederica offense and will look to keep the chains moving for the Green and White. A student of the game and a solid game manager, Harrison’s arm and legs will be critical to the Knights’ success, as will his ability to execute the weekly game plan of the FA coaching staff.

Tyree Tresvant #2 RECEIVER/DEFENSIVE BACK One of the fastest Knights, Tyree Tresvant is a two-way stalwart who can make plays all over the field. The most prolific offensive player among all the returning Knights, Tresvant’s legs, experience and versatility will play a large part in the Knights’ success.

KEYS TO WINNING REPLACE KEY STARTERS

Frederica lost a host of key players to graduation, including its quarterback and top rusher. The Knights will have to find players who can match or exceed those contributions made by their departed teammates.

STEP UP IN CLASS AAA

The Knights are moving up in class going forward and will face a number of larger schools with long, successful football traditions. Frederica must hold its own against its newer, likely tougher competition.

RECAPTURE DEFENSIVE EDGE

The Knights were a surprisingly stingy, opportunistic defensive team during their championship run of 2012, but were more porous in 2013. A return to that bend-but-don’t-break style of defense will serve FA well.

laying in arguably the most difficult region of any classification in Georgia — under a first-year coach, no less — some believed Camden County’s impressive streak of 12 consecutive region championships would be in jeopardy at the beginning of last season. But the Wildcats secured their 13th straight region title when they defeated rival Colquitt County, a 2013 Class 6A state semifinalist, 22-15 at home Nov. 15 to finish 6-0 in Region 1-6A. This season, the Wildcats, with one less team on the region slate, will look to make it 14 in a row.

Never one to shy away from an interesting early non-region game, Camden will open with Lincoln High of Tallahassee, Fla., a perennial power in Florida’s Class 7A that won a state championship in 2010 and returns 16 starters this season. The Wildcats will have the advantage of hosting the game in Kingsland on Saturday. The next four games bring a slew of lower-classification Georgia teams, starting with a home bout with Class AAAAA Dutchtown High of Hampton. Camden will then face Glynn County schools Glynn Academy and Brunswick High from Region 3-AAAAA. The Wildcats will host the Red Terrors on Sept. 5 and then visit Glynn County Stadium to

face the Pirates on Sept. 12, who played in Region 1-6A with the Wildcats last season. In its only stretch of consecutive road games in 2014, Camden will then travel to Jesup to play Wayne County, a Class AAAA semifinalist last season. The region tilt begins Oct. 3 when the Wildcats host Valdosta, then travel to Lowndes on Oct. 10. Camden will play its final two home games Oct. 17 against Tift County and Oct. 31 against Class 6A newcomer Lee County, with a bye week squeezed in between. Their toughest matchup may be the regular season finale when the Wildcats travel to Moultrie on Nov. 7 to play Colquitt County.

Head coach spotlight: Welton Coffey Who would you want to play you in the movie of your life? “James Todd Smith (aka, LL Cool J).”

Welton Coffey Camden County Do you have any pregame rituals or superstitions? “I pray before every game privately in my office. I pray for God to watch over all the players, coaches, opponents and spectators at the game.”

What’s your secret talent (juggling, hula-hooping, handstands, etc.)? “I can wiggle my ears.”

to get a pedicure once every month. You will find my truck outside Solar Nails in Kingsland. However, I am not doing manicures. “Secondly, old friends from school know this, but I am a very good dancer. I was the best dancer at my high school. No break dancing or pop-lockin’ though.”

The 2014 Camden County High team and coaching staff.

CA M DE N CO. H IGH

Players to watch ANTONIO WIMBUSH #14 RUNNING BACK/DEF. BACK

DARRYL ISREAL #32 DEFENSIVE BACK/ RUNNING BACK Probably the Wildcats’ most gritty defender, Isreal may line up at left linebacker, but he is all over the field once the ball is snapped. The talented senior will fill up the box score each time out.

Now a senior, Wimbush may be the most talented player in South Georgia, much less on the Camden roster. A touchdown machine on offense, the 5-foot-71⁄2, 180-pounder was his region’s “Athlete of the Year” in 2013. He will line up at right halfback in the Wildcats’ patented Wing-T and run defenses silly. He puts up numbers on defense, too, both in tackles, sacks and interceptions. Oh, and he returns kicks and punts for good measure.

RYAN JOHNSON #5 RUNNING BACK/D. BACK Camden’s most prolific runner behind Wimbush among the returning players, Johnson will line up on the left of quarterback Antonio Hamilton to give the Cats a tremendous onetwo punch at halfback. Slippery and athletic, Johnson averaged nearly 7 yards per carry in 2013 and returned punts as well.
