Time again for that most glorious season

The beginning of a new school year means many things to many people. For most sports fans, it means one very important thing: high school football is back. Friday night lights. Touchdowns. Field goals. Bands. Cheerleaders. Hometown spirit. High school football is a borderline religion in Georgia and across much of the South. From Dalton to Hoboken and in hundreds of towns in between and beyond, Friday nights from August through November are devoted to cheering on the favorite team. Parents, friends and fans live and die with their sons as they bear witness to a sporting spectacle that is 100 percent an American original. But what will the new season bring? Which team will reward its fans with a championship? Who will be the winners and who will wear the crown of also-ran? Only time will tell, of course, but now that the season has begun, let’s examine some key games in the area in 2013:

• Brunswick High vs. Glynn Academy, Friday: Nothing like jumping right into the fire, and these crosstown rivals, for the second season in a row, butt heads in the second week of the season. Brunswick won the 2012 battle by a mere two points in a game as close as the 28-26 score indicated. Bragging rights will be on the line for both teams, and the revenge factor no doubt will be in play for the Red Terrors. • Vidalia at McIntosh County Academy, Sept. 6: The first of nine consecutive Region 2-AA contests for the Buccaneers couldn’t get any more important as last year’s league champion Indians come calling. McIntosh will be looking to avenge its only region loss from a season ago and gets to attempt that in the friendly
confines of its home field in Darien. • Richmond Hill at Glynn Academy, Sept. 27: The Terrors will be seeking retribution here after dropping a 20-17 heartbreaker in the Wildcats’ den in the 2012 Region 3-AAAAA opener. Glynn will look to right the ship in this, their 2013 league opener and the first of seven straight in region play. • Lowndes at Brunswick High, Glynn Academy at Ware County, Oct. 4: The first Friday in October features two titanic tilts, both very large region contests for the hometown teams. Brunswick’s Region 1-6A opener couldn’t get any bigger and, fortunately for the Pirates, occurs at Glynn County Stadium. Glynn has to go to Waycross to play the 2012 state runners-up in a contest that likely leaves the winner with the inside track to the region title. • Camden County at Brunswick High, Oct. 25: Two area teams collide in yet another key Region 1-6A matchup. The meeting will mark the fourth of six league games for both squads with the winner definitely improving its standing
in the region and the loser hurting its playoff seeding and possibly its postseason chances overall. Not for the faint of heart. • Frederica Academy at Robert Toombs Academy, Nov. 8: The regular season finale for both teams may well decide GISA Region 2-A — as it did in 2012 — but this meeting will mean a lot more to the home Crusaders. Frederica, in only its first season of being eligible for any sort of title, denied RTA a region title with a win in last year’s regular season finale. Then, to add insult to injury, the Knights rallied from 27 points down in the final quarter to defeat those same Crusaders three weeks later in the Class A state championship game. Robert Toombs will have plenty of motivation in this one, no matter the records or playoff implications. • First round of GHSA and GISA state playoffs, Nov. 15: Time will tell what the matchups will be and where our local teams might play, but there is a reasonably good chance all five area teams will still be playing on this memorable date — all in quest of the elusive holy grail of a state championship.

CORY DIXON #18 QUARTERBACK Brunswick High’s success is tied directly to the arm and legs of their senior quarterback. A college prospect, Dixon led all quarterbacks in rugged Region 1-6A last season in rushing and passing yards combined. The Pirates will need more of the same from him in 2013.
A converted linebacker, the 6-foot-2, 241-pound Tobler is a mountain of a man and one opposing offenses have trouble moving. His 105 tackles in 2012 lead all returning Pirate defenders, and his ability to help slow down the opposition’s running game will prove key to Brunswick’s defensive success.
JAMES RICHARDSON #21 RUNNING BACK The fastest Pirate — who has been timed in the 40-yard dash at a blistering 4.3 seconds — Richardson will shoulder the bulk of the rushing load at running back behind quarterback Dixon. The speedy senior, who averaged 5.4 yards per carry in 2012, is also a dangerous return specialist, as evidenced by his 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to open the second half of Brunswick’s season opener. Richardson’s rushing prowess should provide a nice balance to Dixon’s passing.

Stay healthy
Injuries plagued the Pirates in 2012, particularly for talented quarterback Cory Dixon. If the Pirates are going to compete in one of the toughest regions in Georgia, they’ll need to have all their weapons each and every week.

Strike a balance
The spread offense employed by Victor Floyd’s Pirates relies on the arm of the quarterback and a solid corps of receivers, but the running game is equally important to keep the opposition “honest.” Brunswick High’s ability to run the ball and run effectively will enhance its chances in 2013.

Interceptions and fumbles plagued the Pirates in 2012, as they did in this year’s season opener. Limiting those turnovers is essential for the Pirates, as is taking the ball away from their opposition. As any player and coach knows, the turnover battle often plays a key role in deciding games.

get off the field
Stopping the opposition and getting its defensive team off the field was a problem for Brunswick High a season ago. A new philosophy this season has the Pirates lining up in a 4-3 scheme, which will mean linebacker play will be very important. Learning that scheme well and limiting big plays will be essential.

IN CITY CHAMPIONSHIP SHOWDOWN FRIDAY’S SHOWDOWN Brunswick High vs. Glynn Academy Glynn County Stadium 7:30 p.m. Few towns in Georgia can boast a game like the one on the docket Friday night at Glynn County Stadium. Brunswick High and Glynn Academy — two schools with solid football traditions playing in the two highest classifications in the state — set to do battle. Not only are the school’s football teams rivals on the field of play, they share the same stadium — rare in these times. The teams have met in this “crosstown showdown” 69 times with Brunswick High’s Pirates winning 36 times, the Red Terrors of Glynn Academy 31 times and the teams tying twice. Brunswick won last year’s meeting 2826, avenging a 34-0 whipping in the 2011 game. In fact, the Pirates have won six of the past seven meetings with their neighbors to the south. The series began in 1968 during Brunswick High’s infancy as a program. The Red Terrors won that first meeting 45-0 and the next three until a 6-6 tie in 1971 broke the winning streak. The Pirates didn’t taste success in the series until their 11th meeting with Glynn, in 1974, winning the first of two meetings that season 40-19. They went on to win the second 1974 meeting as well and won again twice over Glynn in 1975, including a 39-0 thumping that stood for some time as the Pirates’ largest margin of victory over the Red Terrors. Friday night’s matchup “between the bricks” at Glynn County Stadium is likely to deliver more thrills to add to the growing legacy of the series.
LAST SEASON The 2012 City Championship between the bricks at Glynn County Stadium had all the elements: a revenge factor, a stirring comeback and a down-to-the-wire finish. In the end, the Brunswick High Pirates avenged a 34-0 thumping in 2011 with a 28-26 win last year that gave Pirates head coach Victor Floyd his fourth win in five tries against the crosstown rival. Cory Dixon and Justin Clark were the heroes for Brunswick, which fell behind 14-0 to the Red Terrors before finding its rhythm. Glynn all-everything tailback Jonathan Alford scored the game’s first two touchdowns — the first with 5 minutes, 12 seconds left in the opening quarter on a 6-yard run and the second from 5 yards out midway through the second quarter as GA rolled up the rushing yardage. Another Alford touchdown was nullified by a holding penalty as the fleet-footed tailback rolled up 114 yards on 22 carries before intermission. But the Pirates never wavered. Following Alford’s second score, Dixon led the BHS team on a 13-play drive that covered 67
yards and ended with a 10-yard touchdown scamper by James Richardson with 3:11 to go before the break. A failed run attempt by Dixon left the score 14-6 at halftime — and the Pirates with a new head of steam. On the first drive to open the second half, Dixon, Richardson and Clark combined to push the Pirates 72 yards in 11 plays with Clark tallying the first of his three touchdowns with a 9-yard run with 8:14 left to play in the third. A Dixon swing pass to Clark was good for two points to even the score at 14-14. On its ensuing drive, Brunswick then went up for good at 22-14 when Clark ran in from 1 yard out, and Dixon ran in the twopoint conversion himself. The teams traded punts twice and swapped ends for the final frame until Glynn scratched again, this time with Alford racing 25 yards into the left corner of the end zone to pull the Terrors to within two points with 6:48 to play. A two-point conversion attempt by Alford, however, was stuffed at the 1-inch line, giving the Pirates back the ball with a 22-20 advantage.
After the Pirates’ ensuing drive stalled on their own 44, Glynn managed just one first down before settling for a Matt Delaney punt, which Brunswick’s Chris Trimmings returned 62 yards to the GA 1-yard line. Clark scored on the next play, and the Pirates inched closer to a celebration with a 28-20 lead and just 2:02 to play. But Rob Ridings’ Terrors weren’t about to quit. Starting from their own 22 following a personal foul penalty, Glynn ran six consecutive running plays — the big one a 43-yard scamper to the BHS 8 by Emmett Thomas — and Alford scored from 2 yards out with 16 seconds left. That set up a tie-or-lose situation for Glynn with an ensuing two-point attempt, which went awry when the snap and Alford didn’t connect, snuffing out Glynn’s chance to win. “Don’t give up,” Dixon said after the victory. “We just had to keep playing.” The win was the ninth for Brunswick in the last 12 meetings between the two schools and the 36th overall in 69 total meetings.

ZACH LAMPER #13 QUARTERBACK One of two players who figures to see a lot of snaps under center for Rob Ridings’ Red Terrors, senior Lamper will be relied upon to manage the game, dispensing the ball effectively to both running back and receivers. Lamper’s ability to keep the chains moving will be critical to the Terrors’ success, as will his ability to limit turnovers.
Among the faster Red Terrors, Thomas will do a bit of everything for Glynn, from running the ball to receiving to playing safety and returning kicks. His proven bigplay ability makes him a Red Terror opponents have to keep an eye on every play.
KENNETH CROSS #6 RECEIVER, QUARTERBACK Accounting for 12 of Glynn Academy’s 14 points all by himself in the team’s season opening victory, Cross showed he has the stuff to be a valuable weapon in the GA arsenal. The sinewy strong multi-purpose performer will see time under center as well as at receiver, giving the Red Terror coaching staff a bevy of options while giving opposing coaches reason for pause.

Maintain defensive intensity
A host of Red Terrors were lost to graduation, including a half dozen who signed on to play college ball. New starters like Zach Lamper and an inexperienced offensive line will need to step up and fill the shoes of the talented departed.
Rob Ridings’ teams are known for their relentless nature on defense, something the 2013 team will have to maintain each week in order for the team as a whole to see success. The intensity and pursuit displayed already, in the Red Terrors’ preseason scrimmage and season opener, bode well for Glynn.

Ball control
Glynn Academy doesn’t figure to throw the ball that much in 2013, thus the offensive line will be relied upon to open holes to give backs running room, and the entire offense will need to be conscious of keeping drives alive. Too many three-and-outs will wear down the Glynn defense, making it harder to keep opponents out of the end zone.

WIN ON THE ROAD
The schedule-maker didn’t do the Red Terrors any favors in 2013. Of the seven games on Glynn’s region 3-aaaaa schedule, four will occur away from Glynn County Stadium, including one at always tough Ware County. Rob Ridings’ bunch will need to learn to love the road and play as comfortably there as at home.

Playing all over the field and on special teams, 2012 all-state performer Landon Barrow will be counted on again to catch passes, defend opposing receivers, punt, kick off and kick field goals for the Knights. His 19.8-yards per reception led FA in 2012, he was 96 percent accurate booting extra points and his six field goals included a school record 51-yarder.
Switching from last year’s No. 10 jersey, senior running back Shaun Tatum will wear No. 1 in 2012 and figures to be the No. 1 choice of quarterback Max Bourne when the Knights need rushing yardage. The Knights’ top returning rusher and an all-state performer, Tatum averaged nearly 10 yards per carry in 2012 and tallied seven touchdowns on the ground.
MAX BOURNE #11 QUARTERBACK The man who runs the Frederica offense and one of the heroes of the 2012 state title game, senior Max Bourne is back under center for the Knights. Bourne, also an all-stater in 2012, combines a strong arm with a good head on his shoulders, and his knack for making big plays gives Frederica yet another dimension opponents will have to scheme for.

A bevy of all-state and all-region performers were lost to graduation at Frederica, so players who may not have been on the field that much will have to step in and fill those shoes. A small influx of transfer players also will figure into the mix, all of whom will need to learn quickly and on the job.

EXECUTE UNDER NEW SYSTEM
A new coaching regime has meant new schemes and formations for the 2013 Frederica team. Learning their assignments on both sides of the ball and adapting to their new coaches’ styles will be key for the Knights.
KEEP SKILL PEOPLE HEALTHY

Injuries were never really a problem for the Knights in 2012, a situation any team would love to experience. Ole lady luck may not shine twice in that area, so the Knights — many of whom play both ways — will need to pay special attention to staying healthy through their schedule.
UTILIZE SPECIAL TEAMS ADVANTAGE
One area Frederica excelled in during their state title run was on special teams, where Landon Barrow’s foot was a formidable weapon, and the punt and kick return teams shined. More of the same in 2013 might give the Knights that little extra they need to repeat as champions. Shaun Tatum

The defending state champs will go into battle in 2013 with a new head coach. Former Glynn Academy offensive coordinator Brandon Derrick (back row, third from left) takes the reins from the departed Clint Morgan, bringing a fresh attitude and ideas to the Frederica Academy team. Early indications are, Derrick has the Knights playing like champions once again.
Knights win state title in first true season Amazing is just one of the words that could be used to describe the 2012 season for Frederica Academy. Playing in a Georgia Independent School Association region and actually titleeligible for the first time ever in only the second season of the program’s existence, the Knights did the impossible, the improbable, the who-could-believe-it-waspossible: They won the state championship. After opening the season with a modest 2-2 record — which included a blowout
loss at speedy Memorial Day and a tough home loss to a rugged Pinewood Christian team — the Knights, under Clint Morgan, reeled off nine straight victories to close out not only the GISA Region 2-A title, but the Class A state title as well. Robert Toombs Christian
Academy was the victim on two occasions during the Knights’ historic title run, losing both at Frederica in the regular season finale that decided the league championship, but also back at Frederica Field three weeks later in the state title game itself. As for that game, adjectives cannot do it justice: The Knights scored the game’s final 27 points — all in the fourth quarter — and broke RTA’s heart with a 3427 win that defied logic. It was truly amazing.

WeLTON COFFEY The Wildcats took the field Saturday in their season opener with a new head coach on the sidelines for the first time since 2000. Welton Coffey inherits the reins from the ultra-successul Jeff Herron, and Coffey’s ability to keep the ship moving in the same direction as his former boss — with his own unique style and stamp — will spell the difference for the 2013 Camden County team.

Already committed to play for Nick Saban at Alabama after high school, Williams brings speed to his halfback position and a punishing style to his pony spot on defense. His ability to return kicks adds another positive.
No Wildcat will be under a bigger microscope than Sikes, who inherits the quarterbacking duties from now-Georgia freshman Brice Ramsey. His ability to just run the show and limit mistakes will be critical for the Wildcats.
Also headed to Alabama to play for the Crimson Tide, Bessent is the true definition of a two-way player: lightning-quick as an offensive tailback and equally dangerous and capable of big plays as a cornerback.

Now a senior and one of the Buccaneersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; defensive leaders from his linebacker position, Palmer does a little bit of everything for the MCA defense. He and preseason all-state senior defensive lineman Dvontae Bedford should shine most Friday nights.

No Buccaneer will see as much action as senior quarterback Darry Herrington, who also roams McIntosh County Academyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s defensive secondary. The reigning all-Region 2-AA first-team quarterback, Herrington threw for 1,341 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2012 and tacked on another 11 touchdowns among his 462 yards running the ball. The Bucs figure to go as Herrington goes, and he is solid enough to take them far.
ULYSSES CARSWELL #23 RUNNING BACK, LINEBACKER One of a nice stable of running backs available to MCA head coach Keith Gosse, Carswell has been described by his coach as a â&#x20AC;&#x153;punishingâ&#x20AC;? runner, and he showed glimpses in the season opener against Glynn Academy. Carswell also brings that punishing style to his linebacker position on defense, giving the Bucs yet another playmaker on that side of the ball.
