Rock, in 20i8 so we should have done another one well before now. We had some material for a new album but then started writing newer and newer stuff. So it’s not really due to a lack of songs. “It was just that the newer songs were continually replacing the older ones,” he continues. “But we have now started recording the drums and guitars at my home studio in Los Angeles and will soon have a new album’s worth of material. So we’ll be putting out a new album sometime this year even if we have to release it on New Year’s Eve.

“But we will be back with the new album next year even if we have to play in someone’s backyard,” he adds with a laugh. “We are not going to leave it this long again. Hey, maybe we could do a tour with Baby Animals. Dave Leslie is such a great guitarist.”

when I asked about a possible support, remembered that The Finishing School had booked a gig but were looking for someone else to play with them. So it has worked out well.” The Finishing School is the duo of Thom and Emily Combe, the offspring of popular children’s entertainer Peter Combe.

“I’ve been told that,” Trent exclaims. “I had no idea because I’ve never met them. And what was funny was that I played at a kid’s afternoon birthday party at the Gov and had done a Peter Combe song. So it was all kind of weird.”

TRENT WORLEY By Robert Dunstan Trent Worley is all set to launch an EP, What’d You Call Me?, before he sets about quickly working on another one before putting together an album. We chat to him over the phone as he was walking home late one evening from his local pub and begin by suggesting that – apart from the one he just had – it’s been a long time between drinks.

“So the first song was recorded at Mixmasters and then I did the vocals at Abbey Road when I was over in London.” Abbey Road! How did that happen?

Do you often provide the entertainment at kids’ birthday parties? ‘Ha, no, never,” Trent, who once played a gig at famous New York club The Bitter End and says it’s about the same size as Jive, laughs. “But I got asked and it was more fun than I’d had in a long time. I did a Peter Combe song and one by The Wiggles.”

“I was going over there but knew they often don’t cater to completely independent artists so I was very lucky to get in,” Trent says. “I did it all over email after doing some homework and then emailed a lady by the name of Sophie Ray. You Are Not Alone’s second single, The Next Disaster, which follows Shaking You, was a late inclusion on the album. “It was because I wrote it with the band in mind after we’d all got together,” Courtney announces. “It was a last minute addition. And I think you can tell because it’s got quite a different sound to the rest of the album. Most of the other songs will stand alone with just guitar and vocals but that one really needs a band behind it.”

COURTNEY ROBB COURTNEY ROBB By Robert Dunstan Courtney Robb is excited about the upcoming launch of her latest album, You Are Not Alone, as not only will it be coming out on vinyl, it will also be one of those very rare occasions at which she plays with a full band. More so a solo artist – or sometimes as a duo with Snooks La Vie – for her launch Courtney will be accompanied by the half a dozen players who worked on her album.

You Are Not Alone, Courtney’s fourth album (not including a live offering a couple of years back) and currently Radio’s Adelaide’s Feature Album Of The Week, was recorded at award winning producer Mick Wordley’s Mixmaster Studio with Chris Parkinson of The Yearlings producing and the studio owner later mixing and mastering the completed album. “I’d originally planned to do it with Chris at his studio but ended up doing it live in the studio at Mixmaster,” Courtney says. “So we tracked for two days and recorded on the third. It was a very quick turnaround but it all just fell into place very easily. But we did do a couple of rehearsals before we went into the studio.”

The players on the album include Chris Parkinson on electric guitar and banjo, either Ashley Turner or Emma Luker on violin (who also played cello), Mark Seddon on bass, BJ Barker on drums and

Courtney, originally from Broken Hill but who ended up in Adelaide in 2003, thought Snooks La Vie on harmonica with Marta long and hard about a venue for her launch Bayly (of Andy & Marta) adding backing until settling on the Wheatsheaf Hotel on a winter’s afternoon. vocals. “I’d had Marta come in and do some backing vocals on my last album,” Courtney says, “and she just nails it so quickly every time. She has become the queen of backing vocals. And [violinist] Ashley Turner came in for a couple of songs because Emma had something else on for one of the days.” Courtney, who will feature on Radio Adelaide’s Songcatcher from 9pm on Monday 21 May, reasons that cutting the songs live in the studio has given You Are Not Alone an edge not evident on her other releases.

“I just love the Wheaty and the girls who work there,” she says of the award winning pub that is due to celebrate its 15th birthday under current management on Saturday 26 May. “I love playing there and it’s nice and intimate for my kind of crowd.

“And while I’ve been playing some of the songs from the album at solo shows, there “We were all a are a few I’ve never played live before so that’s going to be little on edge in interesting.”

the studio but that’s what I wanted. I didn’t want it to be super polished because I wanted that edge and energy from recording live.”

“Because we’d had a couple of rehearsals the songs were ready to go without being over rehearsed,” she says. “So we were all a little on edge in the studio but that’s what I wanted. I didn’t want it to be super polished because I wanted that edge and energy from recording live.

“It was almost like capturing a nervous energy,” Courtney continues. “I know that I was quite nervous recording live because I’ve never done that before. I usually do a lot of overdubs and build the songs up that way. And it was Chris who talked me into doing it all live. “But it worked and my original vision for the album has been 10 times better than what I thought it would turn out like,” she laughs.

Special guest at the launch will be Tom Redwood.

“I’ve always loved his music and ran into him one night – he’s recently moved back here from Melbourne I think – when I was still thinking about who to get to play and then thought, ‘Ah, Tom! Perfect!’,” Courtney concludes. “So I am really looking forward to seeing him play as I have not seen him play for a while now.”

Courtney Robb has announced the launch of her new album, You Are Not Alone, and it’s to be on a lovely winter arvo from 4pm on Sunday 3 June at the Wheatsheaf Hotel, 39 George St, Thebarton, with special guest Tom Redwood and with tickets via Oztix.

CHAPPAQUIDDICK (M) *** Director John Curran was born in New York but two of his best movies - Praise and Tracks - were shot in Oz, and he continues his fondness for Aussie-ness by casting Queensland native Jason Clarke as the American Ted Kennedy, the last survivor of the four Kennedy boys. It’s a strong performance, and there’s a fine supporting cast and a tense atmosphere, and yet perhaps this is too subtle, given the nature of the facts. Surely it could have been just a little more explosive?

Clarke’s Massachusetts senator Teddy is seen in a TV interview where he’s asked about standing in the shadow of his brothers (he certainly did), and then there’s a yacht race and talk about him running for the Presidency in 1972 before the events of July 18 1969. Teddy hosts a party and winds up in a car late at night on Chappaquiddick Island, Martha’s Vineyard, with young campaign strategist Mary Jo Kopechne (Kate Mara).

Contrary to rumours, he wasn’t drunk and he wasn’t being unfaithful to his wife when he drove off Dike Bridge and, obviously suffering from shock, escaped

the submerged vehicle and didn’t try hard enough to save Mary Jo, who’s seen taking her last breaths. Teddy alerts his cousin Joe Gargan (Ed Helms) and Attorney General Paul Markham (Jim Gaffigan), who are horrified at his behaviour, and soon there’s a roomful of lawyers telling him what to do to cover it up and/or somehow play the sympathy card.

Melissa McCarthy (co-writer, co-producer, topliner) is still one of the most popular stars in the world today (like it or not), and this is the third pic

the star, especially the wildeyed Helen (Gillian Jacobs), a mature age student who spent eight years in a coma after a skydiving accident (?). There are some familiar faces mugging away in bits (like Maya Rudolph as Deanna’s boozy and randy chum Christine and Modern Family’s Julie Bowen as the nasty real estate agent Dan’s on with), irksome jokes about guns, a giggly and very American overuse of the word ‘vagina’, some creepy sexy stuff as Deanna gets off with slimy toy-boy Jack (Luke Benward), and very obvious attempts to not be too dirty or druggy despite the university setting (they naturally wanted a userfriendly censorship rating to please all of Melissa’s, um, fans).

Hopelessly forgettable, this suggests that Melissa is consciously getting more user-friendly: she’s slimmed down a little and she’s stopped Maddie isn’t very keen on this yelling, and there’s plenty of idea, but her new pals wind up gooey sentiment to make sure adoring Deanna, and there’s we (ugh!) like her. All in all: a lot of dopey female bonding borderline fail. as a selection of supporting players threatens to upstage MDB

“No way! Has the message in your music that you were trying to portray at 14 changed, or do you feel much the same? “The same. I’m still an angry person!”

What are you most angry about? Is it politics, loveor the KFC guy? “Mainly women. Regrets is about crazy relationships and what comes out of them.”

So far, all your music has been self-recorded and funded. How do you feel about one day being signed?

silence the unknown SILENCE THE UNKNOWN By Hannah Louise Silence The Unknown (photographed by Michael Holloway Photography) started roughly two years ago when members from Adelaide metal bands Hollow Eyes and Storm The Asylum came together in 2016. With the recent release of their EP, Rejects, the six-piece metal core band are currently on a tour of the east coast. I caught up with the guys as they were cruising through Victoria and suggested that the band’s sound has come together quite naturally.

KFC for 20 minutes just to get chips and a drink! We are filming everything and going to release a tour blog when we get back to Adelaide. Another highlight is waking Bruce up in the morning! A lot of bands dream of going on national tour in a van and driving around with their mates. What advice can you give them to make it a reality?

Now with the new EP out, does the songwriting stop? Or are you on the road still and focusing on what “We are constantly writing your next release is going to writing. I’m pretty be?

“Have more money than we do! There are so many upfront costs, so make sure you have cash for fuel and accommodation. Don’t leave a town unless you have organised to come back, the connections you will make while touring is the most important thing. Having t-shirts and merch to sell is always great as it is another way to make extra money.

“The other thing is don’t ever, ever stop. Always make sure you’ve got something to “Yeah, pretty much! We were writing songs go onto. If you stop playing shows, then you on the side when in the other bands, which stop practicing. “We haven’t played any shows yet, but we’re just loving all of the shenanigans that comes with life on the road! So far, the worst thing has been having to wait at

“We are very stubborn, and don’t like people telling us what to do with our music. However, Silence The Unknown would love to be signed. We believe the whole thing with record deals is that they want the best out of you, as much as you want the best out of them. They’re going to work with you, not against you.”

The newly released EP, Rejects, has been in the making for a long time now! “For sure. The songs on the EP were written around seven years ago when we were just 14 years old.

“Yep! We can’t wait!”

You are returning to Adelaide to play at Fowler’s Lion Saturday the 26 May, what are you looking forward to move st about a gig in the home town? “Just the fact we are head lining at Fowlers! As a band, we work a lot on our stage presence. It’s not just a music performance, it’s a spectacle.

such as Nook Nosh than go out on a cold, rainy evening to a suburban pub.” At the launch, the musician will be joined by others to preset the songs from the album. “Yeah, it’ll be as a trio that I’m calling The Plastic Robbo Band because I’ll have Gavin Atkinson on snare and hi-hat – and he’s been a friend for years because I used to play with him in bands back in the ’80s –and I’ll have Peter Flierl from PlanB on bass,” David reveals.

DAVID ROBINSON DAVID ROBINSON By Robert Dunstan It’s been 15 long years since Adelaide’s David Robinson, originally from Long Eaton in the UK, issued a solo offering and the singer songwriter, who also fronts the large ensemble PlanB, says the issue had become a bit of a running joke. “I was always threatening to do another album and it became a standing joke whenever I played a SCALA [Songwriters, Composers & Lyricists Association] event that I hadn’t done so,” David laughs.

“I’d just never gotten around to it,” he adds with a sigh. All that is behind him now as David is about to release a new CD, Inner Groove, on CD along with a digital-only bonus offering.

“I started the process a couple of years ago,” he says. “And that was really just a one-off song I recorded with Nigel Grummet who runs a studio called Hiball which is where PlanB had recorded. But that turned out well.

“I’d found Nigel to be very easy to work with – with PlanB and my own song – that I thought, ‘Y’know, I could maybe do a whole album here’. So we started it and even though it’s been a little while in the making, I guess that’s because it was all about squeezing it in when I wasn’t touring with PlanB or playing solo gigs. Or doing Yours Truly, the duo thing I occasionally do with Ken Stewart from Urban Guerillas.

David also now sings with the soul-infused ensemble PlanB. “And not only do you have to have the time to go into the studio, you also have to be in the right headspace.” David reasons. “If you are in there and thinking about other things it doesn’t work. But I made a resolve to get it done and am now super happy with how it has turned out.” Some of the songs on Inner Groove are older ones that David has reworked.

“They’d asked me to review one of their albums which created a bit of a relationship and then approached me about a year later when they were looking for a singer and guitar player,” David recalls. “And I’d said to them that while I didn’t think I was a good enough guitarist to take that step, I would have a crack at singing with them. That would have been back in June or July of 2015.

“It suddenly that’s led to touring South seemed an “And East Asia and the UK with them,” appropriate he concludes. “And then, just place to do it before we head off to the UK again, “Some had been recorded doing another front bar gig and seemed we’re for one-offs – for SCALA at the Gov in July [Saturday 28 July compilation albums and to be the right from 9pm].” similar things – and while I way to launch felt those songs were fine the an album.” David Robinson will way they were, I also knew that with being on compilation launch Inner Groove albums they kind of disappear over time. from 2pm at Nook Nosh, 111 So I thought I’d give them a chance to exist in the one spot all together alongside some Unley Rd, Unley, on Sunday 27 much newer songs.” May as a free entry event with the boutique bar offering some food and beverage specials for David has chosen to launch his offering at the occasion. David also plays boutique bar Nook Nosh the Grace Emily, 232 Waymouth with a free entry, special, St, Adelaide, from 9pm on early afternoon event rather than an evening Thursday 17 May as guest show at a local pub. opening act for Sydney band Urban Guerillas. “I was wondering where to do a launch and then happened to be talking to the owners after one of my Sunday afternoon gigs there – I’ve now done over 40 of them over the last few years – and they said, ‘Why not do it here?’ And it made sense. “It suddenly seemed an appropriate place to do it and seemed to be the right way to launch an album,” David says. “I’ve played lots of pubs but, at my time of life and the kind of friends I have, they are more likely to come to an afternoon launch in a bar
