“Not initially, no,” Erica responds. “We had thought of doing something crazy for the launch at somewhere completely new, but it just seemed to make sense to do it at the Wheaty. The room is just the right size and has such a great sound. So we thought we’d just go back there. It made sense.
“And because there is some YouTube footage of us doing the live recording there, people can see that and have a good idea what to expect,” she adds.

“And the Wheaty is so nice and intimate,” Evan reasons. “It’s the perfect venue for what we do. It has a great club feel which is great for the artist and the audience.” Evan and Erica, accompanied by their manager, PJ Murton, recently ventured to Austin, Texas, for the annual South By Southwest music conference.
“It was a fantastic conference and showcase,” Evan says. “For us it was a business trip rather than a performance trip. Having said that, we did get up on a few nights to jam with people.”

The hotel came under threat in 2001 however when residential apartments were built within earshot and there were concerns that incoming residents might complain about easily being able to hear The Whitlams playing Blow Up The Pokies at the pokie-free establishment.
GOVERNOR HINDMARSH HOTEL By Robert Dunstan The month of June will have the Governor Hindmarsh Hotel celebrating 25 years under its current ownership and the historic pub, which has deservedly collected a slew of local and national awards over the years, has plenty going on. While the pub has presented live music over the years – this writer can still recall seeing Melbourne’s Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons play there sometime in the ’70s but now has only vague memories of The Birthday Party and The Go-Betweens playing there a few years later – it was not until the Tonkin family (Viv, Brian, Joanne, Melissa and Richard) took over the reigns in June of ’93 that it really came into its own as a community-minded, live music venue. Since then many hundreds – possibly thousands – of local, national and international bands and acclaimed solo acts have graced the stage in the hotel’s main room with many more to come.
The hotel has also undergone a number of changes over the years – who recalls the virtually inaccessible bottle shop that is now the main dining room and when the live music room was separated from the pub by the driveway through said bottle shop? – with a very small rear beer garden (where Dirty Three played a memorable Sunday afternoon show just after the Tonkins had taken over) now long gone.
The venue also delights in presenting music spanning all genres – everything from hardcore, punk and blues through to metal and jazz with Kurt Elling’s recent
Fortunately, everyone rallied around, including owners of other hotels that had live music, and showed their full support as did political parties the Democrats, the Greens and Socialist Alliance. Some 5,000 people marched through the streets of Adelaide – a fond memory is of Clanger, then running the Grace Emily Hotel, standing on the corner of King William and Currie Sts armed with a megaphone – and the hotel, and other venues, had a reprieve of some kind due to the public outcry.
Many notable musicians, including Paul Kelly, had also voiced their concerns about the pub being under threat. And that is because most musicians, from here, there and everywhere, love playing the venue and often comment about its slightly circular stage set up.

Andy Strachan, of The Living End (who once played seven nights in a row at the pub), likens the venue to those they play in the US. “We generally play rooms that are comparable to the Gov in Adelaide,” Andy once told me. “There’s a place called Slim’s in San Francisco that’s very much like the Gov – a well-run, Governor Hindmarsh Hotel, 59 Port dedicated, live music venue.” Rd, Hindmarsh, SA And string quartet FourPlay have fond memories of launching their debut album, Catgut Ya’ Tongue, at the pub in the late ’90s and also their most recent offering, The Machine, back in 2014 and greatly look forward to one day making a return. But Wakefield Press have been good in that they have given us some books of poetry to hand out to participants.”

GHYTI By Robert Dunstan Adelaide-based indie rock band Ghyti are all set to release Race To The Bottom with a huge event on the first day of winter but have recently played a few gigs around town ahead of their launch. “Yeah, we’ve been warming up to it,” bass player and lead singer Matt Hill (not to be confused with local producer Matt Hills) laughs. “We did a gig at West Oak Hotel back in March and another at the Exeter and then with The Mavis’s at the Gov a couple of weeks ago.” The opening slot for The Mavis’s came about due to Ghyti doing such a fine job of supporting Regurgitator at the same venue in 2016. “Paul Curtis looks after both bands so when he was looking for someone to play with The Mavis’s we got talking again and got the gig,” Matt explains. “So that was good because it was a good fit. The Mavis’s said to us after the gig that they often get hit by bands to support them but they are often not suitable. But they thought we worked well.

TRASHARAMA By Robert Dunstan Well-known Adelaide identity Dick Dale – and, yes, that is his real name although his mum calls him Richard – is all set to present the 20th anniversary edition of Trasharama, a touring film festival featuring all kinds of trash-related films and such. Dick, currently producing and directing Australia’s first splatter punk video nasty feature film, Ribspreader, has been creating short, award winning and/or nominated filthy films since ’93 and founded Trasharama, the nastiest film program in the country back in ’97.

but is still fascinating, idiosyncratic and rather disturbing, as it details the many faces of Michael Jackson (1958 - 2009), from tiny star of the Jackson 5, to King Of Disco, to a world-dominating legend of early ’80s pop, to the bizarre-looking figure of ’90s notoriety (in the new introduction here Jefferson refers to him as a ‘Child-man-woman-cyborgextraterrestrial’).
This was actually written in 2006 (which is why she speaks of him here as still alive), with a new preface added for this reprinting, and she states that it was a hard book to finish because every time she thought his story (or ‘history’, as he loftily called it) was done and dusted something else would happen and she’d have to return to it. And yes, something typically strange and sinister.
ON MICHAEL JACKSON Margo Jefferson (Granta) 2018, 144pp, $22.99 Jefferson’s brisk biography of Michael Jackson didn’t win her the Pulitzer Prize For Criticism (as the cover seems to suggest)
There’s an emphasis on the faces that Michael showed us and the ones he didn’t, with the huge video clips (movies really) for Thriller and Black Or White, for example, analysed as if they reveal something about the real Michael - or ‘The Real Michael’ - as well as flashingforwards-and-arounds as she compares the Jackson the world loved with the infamous weirdo of the ‘90s and beyond.
A chapter called Alone Of All His Race, Alone Of All Her Sex then gets right into how plastic surgery drastically changed Michael’s appearance (and how he lied about it) while also theorising about his sexuality (or lack thereof), especially as he needed to demonstrate that he was ‘Michael The Family Man’ after he wound up in court for child sex offences.
The chapter The Trial finally delves into this aspect of Michael’s life deeply and attempts to make sense of it without quite coming out and saying that yes, he did it. And did he? Jefferson doesn’t quite say yes, but she does list the official charges and explains what they mean and the case(s) against him, and just how much dirt there was on Michael Jackson.
Beginning in upfront fashion with a chapter entitled ‘Freaks’, Jefferson bounces around with a discussion of the fragmenting nature of our minds, a quick bit about Phineas Barnum (subject of The Greatest Showman), a description of And there was an awful lot, kids. Michael’s youth complete with details we all know (like his abusive father) and a few we don’t. It’s discomfitting stuff, and Jefferson bravely addresses everything

themselves around during some of the harder anthems, yet every element of sound coming from the stage was always clear – another testament to the Fowler’s Live venue which has become synonymous with this genre in Adelaide – with the guitar of Kevin Gruft and Robert Ortiz’s drumming never making a mistake throughout a set which grew in intensity. A feeling of particular sentiment came from those in attendance when the first notes of the This War Is Ours song rang out – who were all to happy to oblige with defiant raised fists. Undoubtedly, this was a concert which was bringing back memories of the angst and frustrations, but also the special moments that go along with growing up as a person. Escape The Fate brought the 10-year anniversary celebrations of their This War Is Ours album to a devoted crowd in Adelaide during the week.
It may have been late on a Tuesday night and the outside temperatures were far less than ideal, however, Fowler’s Live was filled to capacity for the four-piece from Las Vegas. Two support acts featured beforehand with Awaken I Am and Between Kings – both
coming from Brisbane – also playing the entire tour. Fans were eagerly claiming space at the front for the main act though, and Escape did not disappoint by taking the stage and, as promised, played the album which put them on the map in its entirety.
It was evident from the opening song that This War had not lost any significance over the last decade and while most in the crowd had lost their dyed fringes, every single lyric which came from lead singer Craig Mabbitt was echoed back. At times there was hardly room to move among the waves of people throwing
This show was not all about Escape’s past however as songs from their fifth studio release, I Am Human, then followed a brief pause. Maintaining such a dedicated fan base after the first decade in their current setup (they also needed to add a second show in the Melbourne leg of their tour), Escape once again proved their quality as a live act, as even after a second encore it seemed as though everybody still wanted to hear more. While celebrating the influence that This War Is Ours has had since its release in 2008, Escape The Fate were also able to exhibit their development as a band, cementing their status in the hardcore scene for years to come.
