I went up to her and said, ‘I want you to sing in my band doing originals.
“And she was like, ‘Nah, nah, nah, I’m really busy doing cover band stuff’,” Kylie laughs. “But I persisted and persisted and Ama finally relented and came down and had a jam with us and that was it.
“It took me ages to get her on board though,” she adds. “And, you know what, I reckon Ama was a bit dubious because she’d only ever done cover band stuff before. She’d never been involved with an original band. But we’ve now got a really good thing going.” As an aside, it was a couple of friends in Perth who first alerted me about Legs Electric as their son, Jon, does some of the band’s merchandise via his business, Hammer Ink Merchandise. Kenny Watt, who has worked and toured extensively with The Tea Party’s Jeff Martin, produced much of Legs Electric’s Two Sides EP, while Eskimo Joe’s Joel Quartermain produced the remainder. “Joel produced two songs and I’ve known him as a good friend for a long time,” Kylie says. “I’d first met Joel through the Perth scene and had always wanted to work with him.”
LEGS ELECTRIC By Robert Dunstan Hailing from Perth, Legs Electric play ’70s-inspired rock’n’roll and, having just released their Two Sides EP, are taking it out on the road which will include a highly anticipated mid-week show in Adelaide. It marks the band’s first trip to the city of churches although drummer and singer Kylie Soames is quick to point out that she has visited us in the past.
“Yeah, yeah,” she laughs. “I came over to see The Rolling Stones at Adelaide Oval a few years ago.”
The band has been around for some six years and after a few changes now boasts the solid line-up
of Kylie alongside lead vocalist Ama Quinsee, bass player Erin Gooden and guitarist Elana Haynes.
Joining Legs Electric (who sometimes play acoustic shows with Kylie on vocals and tambourine) for their Adelaide gig will be Surviving Sharks and The Straight Jacket Tailors. “I’ve never met The Straight-Jacket Tailors but, apparently, they are originally from Perth but now based in Adelaide,” Kylie announces. “And a good friend of mine, Travis [Dragani], who plays drums with Palace Of The King and sometimes with Baby Animals, recommended Surviving Sharks to us.
“It started out with my sister on bass and another guitarist and funnily enough, we never intentionally meant it to be an all-girl band – it just happened that way,” Kylie laughs. “It was never about “I’d first met gender because it’s always been Joel through about the music.” With Kylie’s sister having to opt out of the band, she then came across bass player Erin Gooden who had been playing with Brufield.
“And Sean Kemp from Surviving Sharks has been very helpful since day one so we can’t wait to meet them,” she says. “And the people at the Crown & Anchor – or The Cranka as I have found out you call it – have been super good to us as well.”
the Perth scene and had always wanted to work with him.” Perth’s Legs Electric
“And then we were looking for a singer and came across Ama at a rock club we used to have in Perth called The Rocker Room,” Kylie says. “And Ama got up on stage there one night and started singing AC/DC’s Highway To Hell and I was just like, ‘Holy crap! How good is she?’ So

guitars and Luke Eygenraam on drums – plan to start recording the new songs and where and with whom do you plan to do it?
“We’ve been working on recording since September last year thanks to a grant from Carclew and we’re very thankful for their patience,” Alana says. ‘”We’re still working on it but obviously don’t want to release it until we’re totally happy with it. You can expect the first single at the end of the year.
ALANA JAGT & THE MONOTREMES By Robert Dunstan
Alana Jagt & The Monotremes have a run of shows coming up on Friday evenings at the Grace Emily Hotel with special guests each night as part of Music SA’s Umbrella Winter City Sounds at which they will be presenting some new songs from a forthcoming recording. “We play the Grace Emily a lot, it’s one of the very best venues in the state; it’s an interesting space, it has great sound, it’s not too big and not too small, and George and the staff are amazing,” Alana responds when asked about the upcoming shows. “I really couldn’t speak more highly of them and we were discussing this residency late last year so it was a long time in the pipeline.” Do the new songs mark any new direction or are they a continuation of your current musical travels?
“I think the new ones we have are a bit less folky which is what I want,” she says. “And I’ve got a lot of ideas for new songs, it’s just a matter of nutting them out with the band and getting them to a standard where we are confident in adding them to the live set.”
“We’ve been recording the bed tracks at Mixmasters with Tom Barnes working as the engineer and then doing overdubs at Tom’s home studio. Tom did our last EP and has done a lot of great SA acts recordings over the past 10-15 years so he knows what he’s doing. He’s also super easy and organic to work with.”
“I think [Cowboys Of Love’s] Dave Blumberg is such an underrated musician And what do you have planned for the second and he’s one of my absolute favourite half of 2018? songwriters and instrumentalists. he’s one of my absolute favourite songwriters and instrumentalists.”
“Naomi [Keyte] and I had been talking about playing another show together so that just fitted really well, and Grim [Fawkner] is an old friend of mine. We met at Bendigo Blues Festival back when my previous group, Buffalo Boyfriend, played it in 2015 and since then we’ve played a bunch of solo shows together in regional Victoria and in Melbourne. “He got in touch as he’s touring with Kasey Chambers and wanted to do a few extra shows before their SA to WA leg of the tour started so that just worked perfectly.
“And McDiamond Swamp is a brand new band playing with us on the last night. You will have some special guests each night it’s their first show but I know they’ve been doing weekly rehearsals all year so – Cowboys Of Love, The Villenettes, Melbourne’s Grim Fawkner, they’re going to be tight. There are three really great singers in the band so you can Naomi Keyte and McDiamond Swamp. “So, yeah, we’re busy but perhaps not in your traditional, live band sense,” she concludes.
Alana Jagt & The Monotremes have a run of shows at the Grace Emily Hotel, 232 Waymouth St, Adelaide, as part of Music SA’s Umbrella Winter City Sounds from 8pm with Friday 13 July having Cowboys Of Love and The Villenettes as special guests with $10 tickets at the door, Friday 20 July having Melbourne’s Grim Fawkner and Naomi Keyte as guests with $10 tickets at the door and Friday 27 July being a free entry affair with special guests McDiamond Swamp.
creative control. . . we had created a pretty healthy live thing, and were determined about what we were doing. We had a clear idea about what kind of band that we were, and what we liked and what we didn’t like. “When it came around to doing the record I think we wanted something a little bit different out of our debut album,” remembers Ritchie. “We wanted it to represent what we were doing live and also to be an extension of what the first two EPs were, which was a little bit more fuzzier for sure, a little bit more dirtier, more wah wah, more drenched in psychedelic rock sounds, bit more paisley and ripped jeans and we felt on that first album he didn’t get that.
tumbleweed Tumbleweed by I. C. T. Messenger Great Aussie stoner rock stalwarts Tumbleweed will be tumbling around the country as they tour a first ever vinyl release of their debut album that stretches back into the dazey green-smoke dawn of ’92.
Many a young stoner misfit smashed their heads around in the embryonic culture of moshpits and pre-internet landscapes of shameful visits to adult stores and where the weed was more like clumps of grass clippings missed by the groundsman on your school oval and you could almost get high, more an exercise in the imagination, but put on a cassette tape your mate made up for you of Theatre Of Gnomes or Weedseed and as you walked around listening to your Walkman things were just so much better.
After these two successful Tumbleweed EPs, and supports for Nirvana’s first gig in Australia, and also knocking around with Mudhoney, Iggy Pop and Rollins, the rambling quintet signed to Atlantic and worked with US producer Mr Colson to bring forth their debut gift to a generation of Australian devotees.
“But what he did get was that he heard the songs and he produced them in a way, um, from fresh ears, you know, like where he album didn’t reflect their live performance heard the song wrapped up in this sort of as they’d preferred, their label’s choice of sound and brought the song out,” says Ritchie. Mr Colson did achieve a production that enabled the songs to shine through in their “But you know it took me twenty-five years own right. to listen to it again to realise that that is what

“The American label at the time had a lot of hopes banked on us and they wanted to send out anyone with connection to, um, Nirvana I suppose. Doug Colson was an engineer who cut his teeth on records with Butch Vig at Smart Studios, so there was a loose, long-bowed connection there, and they thought yeah, he’d be great.
“One thing they didn’t think about I suppose was the fact that he didn’t know us,” laments Richie. “And looking back on it now we were sort of like taking advantage of any opportunity that came our way, and we were pretty much yes to anything, which sort of made things and created a lot of great opportunities.

PlanB are also working on a new album for release later in the year. “We are in the final throes of putting down the first four songs at Sody Pop Studios,” Peter reveals. “And we’ve given Brett [Sody] at Sody Pop a fair bit of license in regards to the direction of the sound. It’s a bit of a departure from our last two albums, but still has the signature PlanB brass sound with a slightly harder edge.
PLANB By Robert Dunstan Adelaide’s PlanB (photographed by Aleksei Serov Photography) have been getting out and about in recent times, including much overseas touring, but many may not realise that the band have been a going concern, in some form or other, for 36 years now. Peter Flierl formed the band in 1982 from the ashes of Del Web Explosion and for a good couple of years PlanB, inspired by the soulful punk sounds of the UK’s Dexy’s Midnight Runners, shone brightly on the Adelaide scene.
“We took our name from Dexy’s song, Plan B,” Peter begins, “which Del Webb used to do. And, when I look back, PlanB did a lot of gigs. We kinda became flavour of the month out at Pooraka’s Bridgeway Hotel and we’d often find ourselves there supporting a lot of interstate touring acts. “So we were playing a lot and we did Ponde once too,” he then says of the infamous biker festival up near Murray Bridge.
“And what’s also funny about that is that there is a rapper in the UK who goes under the name PlanB,” Peter continues with a wry chuckle. “So when we played a certain festival in the UK last year we had to play under the name Plan Beat. But when I was
checking back, PlanB had played Ponde festival before the UK rapper with that name was even born.”
“Brett has a real affinity for the sounds of the ’80s and is doing a fantastic job,” he concludes. “And once we get back from the two overseas tours – the UK and Indonesia – we’ll start recording the next set of songs.”
PlanB (on stage at 7.30pm) will be very special guests when, The band – currently Peter alongside presented by Jim Sharman Patrick Stapleton, Rob Williams, Cameron Smith, Adrian Miller, David International, there is an Robinson, Peter McIver and David evening of Beatles Vs Stones Lloyd – will soon be heading “When I was at the Governor overseas yet again. checking back, Hindmarsh, 59 Port Rd, Hindmarsh, on Friday “For the last three years PlanB had we’ve been doing that on played Ponde 20 July with tickets via an annual basis,” Peter says. festival before the venue or Oztix. “This year will be our second the UK rapper https://thegov.oztix. time back to the UK and last with that name com.au/default. year we played Mongolia as well which was quite an was even born.” aspx?Event=88392 experience. We did Mongolia, Vietnam and Cambodia.
“We’ve also played China and, after we get back from the UK, we’re touring Indonesia later this year,” he adds.
Peter has spent time in South East Asia, so I wondered if that had helped set up tours to that region.
“Some of it comes down to that, yes,” he responds. “My wife, now an Australian citizen, is Chinese so that has been a great help too. But, yeah, when I was living over there I was playing in bands and mixing with lots of the local musicians. “So that knowledge and contacts are helpful in working out a feasible tour,” Peter says. “It makes it easier to work out the easiest way to get from one end of a country to the other and what venues may already have a backline in place.”
PlanB will be also treating punters to a free entry show in the front bar of the Governor Hindmarsh Hotel, 59 Port Rd, Hindmarh, on Saturday 28 July from 8pm at which they will be playing some new songs from their forthcoming release as well as songs from the albums Too Late The Hero and Time Is A Diamond.

as ‘Ghost’ also appears. Much has been made of the fact that this character was a man in the comics, and here it turns out to be played by the relatively unknown Hannah JohnKamen, who’s surprisingly and frighteningly intense.

going, and Max gets to interact with a bunch of other dogs, all of whom talk in the voices of well-known players who evidently needed the money. There’s a disgraced French mutt named Philippe and voiced by Stanley Tucci, a vain pooch called Dante and voiced by Alan Cumming, a Zen canine with Shaquille O’Neal’s voice and a cute woofer named Daisy (Jordin Sparks’ vocals) that Max looks set to get frisky with but doesn’t (this is a PG movie, after all!). Oh, and just in case Frank wants to get frisky too, his love interest is a goofy animal lover named Mattie and played by no less than Natasha Lyonne, star of TV’s Orange Is The New Black, who yuks it up just as lamely as everyone else. And, as usual, hammering a film for kid should prompt anguished cries of, “Don’t be so mean! It’s only for littlies!!!”, which always seems to suggest that movies for rugrats somehow should be awful. Peculiar that. And arf, arf, arf.
