MELBOURNE SKA ORCHESTRA
The Garden Of Unearthly Delights is once again returning to Rundle Pk as part of Adelaide Fringe and, as in previous years, boasts some wonderful shows which will span everything from comedy through to music, cabaret, theatre and so much more housed in almost 20 venues.
embrace the traditional ska sound on Saturn Return we also wanted the USB to stand up against any contemporary release. I mean, it is 2017 not 1966 and the ARIA we got for Sierra Kilo Alpha indicates we’ve got things right. “The very essence of Melbourne Ska Orchestra is that old school ethic with a new kind of attitude. So that’s why we have lately been experimenting with Latin sounds and things like funk. And we want to continue with that while also keeping it quintessentially Australian as well.” What’s next for the collective?
Melbourne Ska Orchestra are making their way back to town but on this occasion it’s for a large event that will go under the name SkaBQ that will kick off in the late afternoon to feature three other bands Lucky Seven, Babylon Burning, Fistful Of Trojans and three DJs – with the venue, the Governor Hindmarsh Hotel, offering Caribbean-style food in keeping with the theme. By Robert Dunstan “SkaBQ [which is going around the country] is our idea of highlighting all the different aspects of ska music by having a number of bands doing their take on the music,” Nicky Bomba, of Melbourne Ska Orchestra, says. “So we’ve been pleased that all the bands involved have got into the spirit of the thing,” he says of acts such as Adelaide’s Babylon Burning set to give their original songs a ska spin. “And, with the venue putting on special food, it’ll be like a little minifestival. It’s going to be fantastic.”
and performed at festivals such as WOMADelaide, Queenscliff Music Festival and Bluesfest, have been a going concern since 1993, but didn’t release an album until a decade later which picked up a couple of ARIA nominations. In 2016, the outfit released Sierra Kilo Alpha – cleverly packaged in 3D and came with the appropriate glasses and also issued on vinyl – which went on to win an ARIA for Best World Music Album and be nominated for Best Live Act. To coincide with the current tour, MSO have now released Saturn Return, a special, 11song USB of new songs that were recorded at the same time as Sierra Kilo Alpha but didn’t make it onto the album.
For those not in the know, ska music originated in Jamaica in the late ’50s as an amalgamation of mento and calypso along with It wasn’t because elements of jazz and any of the songs R&B and is seen as were not up “And it all the forerunner of to scratch, reggae music. kinda came however, It regained as Nicky about because popularity explains. in the ‘70s we’d hired some when UK cars recently and “When bands such as we were The Specials, none of them had recording The Beat, The for Sierra Kilo CD players.” Selecter and Alpha, we only such blended it needed 11 songs with punk and also but, as the band enjoyed a third wave can be quite prolific, we of success in the US in the ended up recording 22,” he ‘90s with bands such as The laughs. “So those 22 songs Mighty Mighty Bosstones, were all recorded pretty Less Than Jake, Fishbone and quickly and we then chose 11 Poison Ivy. songs to go onto an album. songs we chose painted a nice picture and had a nice vibe, as do the songs on the Saturn Return USB. “So it didn’t mean that the songs that are now on the USB were inferior in any way, they were just songs that weren’t going to give Sierra Kilo Alpha a balanced feel,” he adds. Nicky goes on to say that with having another 11 songs at their disposal, they wanted to do something a bit different. “And then someone came up with the idea of a USB shaped like a spaceship and we all thought that was a great idea,” he says. “And it all kinda came about because we’d hired some cars recently and none of them had CD players. And we’d all bought CDs along to play on the trip. The hire cars all had USB players or access to Blutooth. “And the other good thing about a USB is that you can put more other information on there than what you can with just a CD booklet,” Nicky reasons. In some ways, releasing ska material on a USB is mixing the old with the new. “Exactly,” Nicky readily responds. “But while we
“There’s talk of more overseas tours because we get offers all the time,” Nicky responds. “The problem with that is the expense of getting such a big band overseas. So, yeah, there are lots of things on the cards and lots of talks about gigs in Spain, Prague and even Malta, but nothing decided on yet. “But everything will fall into place and we do have lots on this year anyway,” he says. “Obviously, we have the USB to promote and are just about to release a new film clip and we’ve just finished doing a Japanese commercial for Jim Bean. “So we’re always active and never complacent,” Nicky concludes with a chuckle. “You just can’t afford to be complacent these days as, even though you may have lots of great songs, you continually have to find new ways to get them out there.” Melbourne Ska Orchestra will be armed with a special, 11-song USB of new songs and will stage a huge event SkaBQ at the Governor Hindmarsh, 59 Port Rd, Hindmarsh, from 4pm on Sunday 26 March with tickets via the venue or OzTix and special guests Lucky Seven, Babylon Burning and Fistful Of Trojans plus DJs Pablito, Old Skool Andy and Kilmarnock Steve.

would come to me with polyrhythms and odd time signatures and we’d work around that. So it was like doing everything back to front.” The duo are in the process of recording a new EP, Quadrilogy, but Alex says they have taken a very different route than the long gestation period of their self-produced debut. “The EP will be more guitardriven and more commercial but still very, very heavy,” he announces. “It won’t be so epic and won’t have any particular concepts like Creation & Chaos [which carried a theme of the beauty of creation opposed to the chaos of man] had. “So while we love our concept ideas, the EP will take a break from all that and just be a more fun, middle stream thing,” he says. “It’ll still be progressive – very much so – but will have less of the technicalities of our first album.
Sydney-based duo Dirty Wolves are heading to Adelaide to take part in Holy Land, a music festival that boasts a headliner in the form of Nick Oliveri (Queens Of The Stone Age) alongside a stellar supporting line-up of Filthy Lucre, Lost Cosmonaut, The Tits, A Basket Of Mammoths, Glass Skies, Moonhunter, Rat Ta’Mango and Your Loyal Heartless. By Robert Dunstan So BSide Magazine got on the blower to Alex Hermes (AKA Skuewolf) who plays guitar and sings in the progressive rock two-piece alongside drummer Graeme Young. The duo formed a while back but didn’t really start gigging until around October of last year for the release of Creation & Chaos via MGM. “We actually came up with the idea of Dirty Wolves a couple of years ago,” Alex says, “but, yeah, didn’t really start gigging until the album came out. So our first live show was in September.” Alex already knew drummer Graeme as they both spent time in the band Rubikon which later became Bullethead and who scored a great deal success until disbanding part way through a tour due, pretty much, to exhaustion. “So, after all that, Graeme and I then came together as a two-piece with the idea of trying something new,” 8
he says. “We wanted to be progressive but not in a way of saying, ‘Oh, look at us. Aren’t we different?’. It was more about progressive in pushing ourselves and finding new ways to do things.
Alex mentions they are also working on their next album. “That’s another massive project called The Ages which is actually taking ages,” he laughs. Dirty Wolves, who often work with noted American-born producer Rick Will (“Rick cowrote one of the songs on the new EP and it has his name written all over it,” Alex says) are looking forward to making a return to Adelaide having played here once in the past.
“We played with Filthy Lucre and are looking forward to seeing them again as they are just awesome,” Alex enthuses. “They have a “At the end of great vibe the day, if you are about them.

Alex, also of Australian guitar company and studio GuitarBaby HQ, goes on to say that much of Creation & Chaos was created around Graeme’s drum patterns. “I’d say about 80% of the album was done that way,” he states. “Graeme
“Our old band used to pull 800 and Dirty Wolves will get back up eventually to that but it is a lot lot harder now,” he sighs. “There’s less money around, less know-how and less industry. So, a lot of work has dropped off.
“But, at the end of the day, if you are a good band with a good following, you’ll move forward and be in a good way,” Alex decides. “And while one venue might close its doors, there will always be new ones popping up.” Once they have finished recording their new Quadrilogy EP, Dirty Wolves will go into tour mode. “Yeah, we’ll do a big Australian tour and head back over to New Zealand again – Wellington and Auckland,” Alex says. “And we’ve got Japan coming up to. We are doing a festival there. And all that comes about due to networking with good people – decent people who you can actually work with – and you just book your tour with them and go for it.” Dirty Wolves also have an association with fellow Sydney act Red Sea as that band’s singer, Erica Bowron, guests on Chaos & Creation. “And I also produced their Battlescar EP,” Alex says. “And Red Sea came down with us that time we played with Filthy Lucre. “And we found the live scene in Adelaide to be pretty good,” he suggests. “There seems to be a pretty good vibe happening there. So, I think we’ll pick up a following pretty quickly in Adelaide. “The first time, of course, is always hard as no one really knows who you are, but if you keep going back and play well-publicised, wellorganised shows at good venues, it will work,” Alex concludes. Sydney duo Dirty Wolves, who have a website at < http://www.dirtywolves. com/> are heading to Adelaide once again to take part in rock festival Holy Land at The Producer’s Hotel, 235 Grenfell St, Adelaide, on Saturday 31 March alongside Queens Of The Stone Age’s Nick Oliveri, Filthy Lucre, Lost Cosmonaut, The Tits, A Basket Of Mammoths, Glass Skies, Moonhunter, Rat Ta’Mango and Your Loyal Heartless with $20 presale tickets via Moshtix here <http://www.moshtix. com.au/v2/event/holyland-feat-nick-oliveri-andmore/93081>. BURIED FEATHER It’s been four long years since denizens of the Melbourne psych wilderness Buried Feather have graced their avid listeners with a recorded dose of sonic contraband. I have listened repeatedly to their latest LP, Mind Of The Swarm, and couldn’t help but feel like a bee wanting to dive-bomb into a vat of boiling honey. Or as Eric Clapton once said, ‘If you want to get down, get down on the ground…’ By Ian Messenger I spoke to frontman Steve McLennan, returning from what sounded like his gallant reconnaissance to Stockholm, on all things regarding Mind Of The Swarm including an immanent tour which will bring them to to the award winning Grace Emily Hotel for a one show only with Somnium. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard producer Paul Maybury was mentioned as being involved in this mindaltering record, a record of which I feel I need to talk to my psychiatrist about, and so I asked McLennan exactly who was involved, and how and where. Just getting the background deets.
the producers inhabiting the suburbs of Australia gowned in the emperor’s new clothes. I asked McLennan to elaborate on Maybury’s ‘cool approach’. “Paul’s whole thing is about getting a good ‘live’ performance. His whole approach is just to get the band comfortable as if you were playing in a rehearsal studio or on stage.
“So we were all in this huge warehouse space and had all of our amps and stuff set up… A little bit baffled off but not really worrying “It was our first time about that too working with Paul. much. and then have them enjoy this experience, like a Stockholm Syndrome, or a moth that still enjoys the flame that is burning them. Steve McLennan laughs goodnaturedly at the random crackpot on the other end of the phone, “Amazing that’s your takeaway from The Mind Of The Swarm. It’s funny because I’ve done a bunch of interviews and not one person has asked me about The Mind Of The Swarm… That’s an interesting take on it, it’s not what I was going for, but if people take that away then that’s fine.” OK then, maybe the world of art is more benign than I imagined and I should quit my amateur readings of Nietzsche. I shift tact and ask McLennan about what was going on with the very romantic track Screen Dreamer. “A lot of my lyrics are stream of consciousness type stuff, but that one was about when I was recording the album I was living apart from my fiancé, now my wife. So she was living in Sweden and I was living in Australia and we would spend all of this time on Skype or on FaceTime talking to each other. And always at really odd times of the day because of the time difference, it was Stockholm to Melbourne.
“So [Screen Dreamer] was about dealing with that, and being in different times and headspaces, and having this fairly intense relationship with someone in a screen. So that was the start, and then [the song] took a kind of weird turn from there.” Buried Feather have embarked on a thorough tour of Victoria and New South Wales including a date at the Sydney Psych Fest, and ending the shebang at The Grace Emily Hotel, revered hive of live music within this humble city of empty churches. Apart from the new album, what’s new with Buried Feather? What can audiences look forward to? “I guess it’s gonna be a little bit different this time around. We’ve expanded to a fivepiece now, and everyone has said it sounds more epic than it had before. We had our first show at Howler in Melbourne on the weekend and it was well received so I fully recommend everyone to come along in Adelaide.” Buried Feather have announced a tour that will bring the Melbourne-based psych rockers to the Grace Emily Hotel, 232 Waymouth St, Adelaide, for a free entry show from 9pm on April Fool’s Day (Saturday 1 April) to promote the release of new album, Mind Of The Swarm, with Somnium as special guests.

And the other week was funny because I was out at a farmhouse and it was a bit like that TV show American Pickers – full of dust and stuff – but I got a whole trunk of stuff out of it. “I’d actually pulled the one thing out I wanted to be told, ‘No, no, you have to buy the whole lot’,” Tony laughs. “So it was fun going through the trunk later and seeing what else was in there. But a lot of it I didn’t really want.”
Adelaide identity Tony Grudge, who sings with punk rock band C-Bombs, opened vintage store Retro Bait at the historic town of Auburn in the Clare Valley a couple of years ago and has watched the enterprise slowly build. By Robert Dunstan “My father was an antique dealer so, back in the old days, the shop was known as Hayward’s Antiques,” Tony begins. “But then mum got ill and dad kind of lost interest. “And, as a kid, I used to travel all around Australia with my dad to antique fairs as well as to all the bottle fairs because he was then president of the South Australian Bottle Club,” he continues.

“So I always had an interest in collecting things – in those days it was mostly records and record players which I still love – and then I moved into doing garage sales and doing the markets around town. “But I was also constantly pestering dad to let me take over the shop up in Auburn and reopen it but I’d sorta given up on that,” he sighs. “And then, suddenly one day, dad said, ‘Why don’t you just use the shop’. So here we are.” Tony goes on to say that since opening in October of 2014, Retro Bait, which generally has an array of bargains out the front, has slowly gathered steam. “It’s continually picking up,” he enthuses. “I now have some good regular clients and sales are improving each month. So, it’s definitely on the up although it’s a bit slow at the moment with it being summer. Winter is the tourist season in the Clare Valley with all the B&Bs pretty much 12

music concerts such as A Day On The Green at Annie’s Lane and the local horseracing carnival are also good for business. “And Blenheim Music & Camping Festival is always good too,” Tony says of the popular annual festival. “They are often coming up in cars [to camp] so have time to stop and have a look around.” There are certain items that sell quickly such as vintage
“And I picked up an old kitchen cabinet the other week out at Goodwood which needed a bit of work – just a stain and a polish really – and then sold it to someone two weeks later who lived in Goodwood. So it came from Goodwood in my ute up to Auburn, had a bit of work done and then went back to Goodwood in my ute again.” With the store being open from 11am on Thursdays to Sundays until 5pm, Tony spends the earlier part of the week gathering new stock. “And that’s pretty much fulltime,” he says. “I’ll often be out picking stuff up or doing
Tony, who offers free city delivery of large items, understands the need to keep the store freshly stocked with enticing new items as customers can be put off if they regularly venture in and see the same old stuff. “Yeah, having regular new stock keeps people interested in coming back,” he espouses. “And that helps keep me interested too. “But I often change stuff around in the shop,” the proprietor then says. “Regular sometimes come in and suddenly see something and say, ‘Wow, how long have you had this?’ And I’ll just smile and say that I’ve had it for a while but they mustn’t have noticed it before. “They may have been coming in every weekend for the last six months, but if I change stuff around and things are placed somewhere different in the shop it keeps it fresh,” he wryly chuckles. “People don’t think they are looking at the same stuff all the time.” Has anyone well known ever popped in? “Ha, not that I know of,” Tony responds. “I had been hoping that [American singer] Chris Isaak would drop in when he was playing A Day On The Green a while back as I know he loves his retro stuff. But, no, all I saw was his car drive past. “You never know, someone famous might have popped in at some stage and I may not have even noticed,” he concludes with a laugh. Retro Bait is located at 18 Main Rd, Auburn SA, and is open from 11am until 5pm on Thursday through to Sundays as well as most public holidays. A FEW LESS MEN (MA) ** The blokey bad-taste Ocker comic-yock-fest A Few Best Men back in 2012 was hardly a classic (despite a sequence where Olivia Newton-John gets pissed and hangs from a chandelier), and yet here we have a sequel anyway, with the same producer/ screenwriter (Dean Craig), a different director (Mark Lamprell filling in for Stephan Elliott), and a more desperate need to hopefully shock and offend with oodles of wannabe-grossout laffs, almost none of which are properly funny, maaaaaaaaaaaate.
An animated credits sequence depicts how the returning characters came to Australia for David’s wedding, including David himself (Xavier Samuel as the straight man), root-rat Tom (Kris Marshall), hapless Graham (Kevin Bishop) and doomed Luke (James Helm), and how Luke fell off a cliff. They think he’s survived but he hasn’t, and when Luke’s Kray-ish brother Henry (Ryan Corr, over-the-top and putting on a dire accent) finds out what’s happened in London (yeah, right), he insists that the remaining three pals get the 16
corpse to England in time for the funeral (and yes, before decomposition sets in). This then sets into motion the usual episodic, dick-jokeheavy Road-Movie-type plot in which the lads live through a plane crash (Jeremy Sims hams it up as the pilot), drag the cadaver through country Western Australia to a music festival, Tom almost enjoys a threesome, Graham is forced into a major and ageist sex setpiece (which almost works anyway as Lynette Curran is nearly amusing as Maureen) and David again starts questioning why he’s friends with these idiots. Although, of course, Xavier might do better considering why he bothers with Aussie comedies at all, as last year’s Spin Out was equally irksome. Full of familiar funsters (Sacha Horler as a ranger, Deborah Mailman as a police officer, Shane Jacobson as the bloody mad Mungus) in dopey form, this has a lot of wild energy, but tries so hard to be outrageous it grows pretty flamin’ tiresome well before the final sequence (already, of course, given away in the trailer). Struth, guys - grow up!!! Mad Dog Bradley
ALONE IN BERLIN (M) ***
Swiss co-writer/director Vincent Perez’s filming of Hans Fallada’s famed and factually-based 1947 novel Every Man Dies Alone/ Jeder Stirbt Für Sich Allein (apparently drawn from actual Gestapo records) features fine work from its cast, atmospheric location filming (with Saxony and Brandenburg filling in for Berlin) and a sense of dread, but somehow doesn’t quite catch fire and become a proper classic. In the Berlin of 1940 we meet Otto Quangel (Brendan Gleeson, in everything these days) and his wife Anna (Emma Thompson), a gettingon working-class couple without strong political leanings, whose views radically change when they receive word that their only son (actually Anna’s brother in real life) has been killed in France. This drives Otto into forming a kind of one-man resistance, and he carefully starts writing postcards full of anti-Nazi sentiment and leaving them in key spots around the city, a seemingly small act of civil disobedience that could nevertheless get
them both executed. Naturally, Otto becomes more and more daring, and criminologist Escherich (Daniel Brühl) is on his trail, although his job is complicated by the SS, who believe they know better and are happy to frame the wrong man and belt the crap out of Escherich in a sequence that proves fairly startling, because there’s really no other violence here. Despite the fact that Gleeson and Thompson aren’t German and speak English here with flattenedout accents, they’re both still strong, and Daniel is even better and should be cracking Hollywood stardom any day now. But, somehow, under director Perez this is somehow too restrained, and could have benefitted from just a bit more gunplay - or even a little goose-stepping. Mad Dog Bradley

Midge Ure’s ‘Something From Everything’ Tour The Governor Hindmarsh Hotel Thursday 9 March featured, including One (from Reviewed by MDB Midge Ure, over the years a member of Rich Kids, Ultravox, Visage and Thin Lizzy (very, very briefly, he assures us), as well as a solo performer (and nearly a Sex Pistol - well, almost), promised that this tour would be different from what we saw when he visited Australia back in 2013. He also assured us be playing, as the title suggests, something from each of his 14 albums, and stripping them back and rethinking their sound. He’s said that a key reason for this decision was that he’s been playing some of these songs for more than 35 years and that he was starting to get a little tired of them - but audiences certainly aren’t. The Gov show began with a half-hour set by India Electric Company, Midge’s two-lad backing band from Devon, and they offered some light gags about the heat of the Aussie summer while offering yearning, guitar-and-violin-heavy tracks of their own (like Eyes & Tears), as well as a cool cover of Bruce Springsteen’s I’m On Fire. After a short break, Midge then took to the stage with the guys and without a word launched into Ultravox’s I Remember (Death In The Afternoon), with strings replacing synthesisers and in a voice still stirring after so many years. After intros, and jokes about how fans can get restless if musos like him play too many new songs, Midge then knocked off Ultravox’s Flow, his solo hit If I Was (prefaced with the rather disparaging words, ‘This is ancient history’), the newer Star Crossed and more, as well as his sad but sweet tribute to Thin Lizzy’s late lamented wildman Phil Lynott, Homeland. More Ultravox cuts were 20
their recent reformation as, Midge put it, a “bunch of old men”) and the classic Reap The Wild Wind (with fine work from the IEC boys). The first Visage tune of the night turned out to be The Damned Don’t Cry, a wonderfully creepy piece that had never been played live until this tour. The punters knew that Midge’s best-known songs were being kept until last, and we weren’t disappointed as, without a word, he slipped into a synthesiser-free, strings-only version of surely Ultravox’s key piece, Vienna, which sounded fabulous with the acoustic treatment, and this then segued into Visage’s great hit Fade To Grey. And, decades later, both are still lovely – and eerie. Ultravox’s Hymn seemed to end the show, but Midge joshed about the whole fake encore business last time and he did it again, returning less than a minute later for a gorgeous take on Ultravox’s Dancing With Tears In My Eyes and, with biting talk of the state of politics (especially American politics), Ultravox’s All Fall Down. And the crowd went wild, which wasn’t surprising, even though both those songs are essentially about the end of the world.

SARAH CARROLL & THE LEFT WING Sarah Carroll (AKA The Ukulele Queen Of The Bellarine) has a new band, The Left Wing, and, armed with their debut album, Star Parade, are heading over the border for a series of launches. By Robert Dunstan Sarah and the band have already kicked off their launch tour that included performances at Port Fairy Folk Festival. “It was good there,” she announces. “We had a really good time and it was nice to sell a few CDs and shake a few hands and talk about the show and hear their words of encouragement.” The rootsy Star Parade is quite a varied affair as it features some quite whimsical songs alongside some personal reflections, while there is strong hint of reggae on Where’d The Dows Go?. A real surprise, however, is the almost seven-minute Healing Dog, which rocks out, in fine style toward the end. “And that’s a really fun song to play live,” Sarah laughs. “Well, they all are really, but that one is a lot of fun because the long outro turned out to be as long as the actual song itself and it’s given it a whole other dimension that I didn’t see when I wrote it. “And a lot of that variety on the album is due to Leigh Ivin and his own eclectic songwriting and musical nature,” she says of the producer who also plays a assortment of instruments as part of being a member of The Left Wing alongside Sarah’s bass-playing son George Wilson and drummer Ronny Rindo. “Leigh and I had talked a lot about my songs and also talked a lot about what kind of instrumentation was needed in each one to bring out its best quality,” Sarah adds. “The mood of each
song was definitely expanded on once we started recording the album.” Sarah had first hooked up with Leigh some years ago. “He plays in The Re-Mains,” she says of the alternative country rock band. “The Re-Mains and I were on the same record label about 10 years ago so we often used to do gigs together. And we also spent a fair bit of time with Leigh at Tamworth Country Music Festival because I’d often get up on stage with him.
has been absolutely crucial to how Star Parade has come out even though we didn’t really spend a lot of time together working on it.” Star Parade also boasts quite a large number of guests in the form of harmonica player Chris Wilson (Sarah’s partner), fiddle player Glenny Rae, Chris and Sarah’s son, Fenn, on acoustic guitar and Jackie Marshall on harmonies and backing vocals. The album cover has the band with (unlit) cigars in their mouths and I wondered if it had caused any flak.

BOB’S
BITS with Robert Dunstan
There but for the grace of God go I. The recent well-deserved induction of The Grace Emily Hotel, 232 Waymouth St, Adelaide, SA, into the SA Music Venues Hall Of Fame caused me to
Being young and naïve, I questioned the morality of procuring a haircut during working hours only to be sternly told, ‘The bits I am getting cut off grow during working hours so it makes total sense to get them cut during working hours’.
forgot about it until one night back in the year 1998. Folk rock band Weddings Parties Anything were in town with The Waifs to do what was their farewell show at Heaven (now the recently closed HQ Complex) and after the gig I had gone backstage to greet them. “Ah, just the person we need,” they virtually all said in unison. “A mate of ours from Melbourne has just opened a pub in Adelaide and invited us all back there. So, take us to the Grace Emily Hotel kind sir.”
Quite why we commenced our journey there when the bottom end of Waymouth St was just up the road from the venue we were at I will never know but we did have some adventures along the way. One being that a pub enroute – I think it was Raglan’s – had a big sign on its window announcing it did functions of any kind with the words ‘weddings, parties, anything’ blazenly written across the bottom. So, it marked a great photo opportunity with the famous band of that name and an assorted waif and (somewhere) I would still have the incriminating photos. Anyway, it was a long, long journey and were eventually about to give up – remember that this was in the days long prior to mobile phones and GPS being widely popular – when someone in the party suddenly said, “Look, there’s a sign.” And indeed there was. A big, bold sign on the left-hand side of what I remembered as the Launceston Hotel now proudly saying ‘Grace Emily Hotel’. And so, it was that I made my first ever visit to the newlynamed Grace Emily Hotel although that was not without some little details being sorted as the new owner, a guy named Clanger, was suspicious of me at first when told I was a card-carrying member of the media.
reflect upon when it was I first stepped foot into the pub. If memory serves me correct, and it often doesn’t, it would have been back in the ‘70s when I was rather more gainfully employed than I am now and was working for the PMG (now Australia Post) at the now long gone Gouger St Post Office. Late one morning the postmaster, whose name I won’t recall, asked me to accompany him while he went for a haircut. 28
After the working hours haircut, the postmaster noted that it was time for lunch and suggested we head to the nearest hotel. So, feeling peckish myself, happily followed him to the nearest watering hole which happened to be the Launceston Hotel at 232 Waymouth St. And when we got there, being quite young and naïve, I wondered why the bar staff had neglected to put any clothes on. Despite all that, I soon deetched the Launceston from memory and quickly
I confessed that I had never heard of such a pub and asked where it might be. “Ah, it’s somewhere on Waymouth St,” they virtually all said in unison.
“The media?” Clanger snarled. “Not sure I want those kind of people drinkin’ in my pub.” Despite all that, somehow I managed to keep going back.
“Righto then,” I said. “Let’s all wander along Waymouth St until we stumble across it.” And so, it was to be that the members of Wedding Parties Anything and a stray waif – I think it was Donna – started our journey along Waymouth St from the top end of the street on the corner of King William St.
And, funnily enough, fresh from playing WOMADelaide, The Waifs have announced a show at the Governor Hindmarsh, 59 Port Rd, Hindmarsh, SA, on Sunday 2 April with tickets via the venue or OzTix. For more BOB’s Bits go to:
