Smart Cities for the future

he urban landscape has undergone major transformations over many centuries, dating to what are believed to have been the world’s first cities founded in Mesopotamia after the Neolithic Revolution. Today, key foundations of those ancient cities – geography, economy and culture – remain as relevant as they did in 7500 BCE, but this century a new element has become increasingly important as we march inexorably into a “smart” future.
The current blueprint for modern cities is focused on intelligent systems that generate lifestyle options in real time, while creating urban environments which are more sustainable and enhance the quality of life and well-being of their residents.
Most importantly, at their core are far-sighted building industry professionals who incorporate cutting-edge trends into their latestgeneration construction projects. In this new issue we are pleased, as always, to showcase state-of-the-art projects that set the scene for Western Australia’s smart cities of both now and the future.
The stunning homes featured here include a multi-level masterpiece in Peppermint Grove, a Balcatta property that truly encapsulates beauty, and a flagship “climate-specific” home on the Turquoise Coast.
On a larger development scale, 21st century concepts of luxury and safety cohabit in harmony in a picturesque residential project in South Perth, a resort-style apartment complex in Jolimont highlights a strong commitment to sustainability, and residents can enjoy a carefree lifestyle in a garden of tranquillity bordering Perry Lakes Reserve.
TCommercially, we view a new hub that is set to transform the local business and civic landscape in Leederville, and discover how one Western Australian company was able to overcome the unprecedented challenge of not being able to meet personally with the client due to COVID-19 restrictions. Education has always been a cornerstone of society, be it ancient Mesopotomia or contemporary Perth, and one new project that embraces a pacesetting 21st vision in this respect is Balcatta Senior High School. Meanwhile, Penrhos College in Como has made a major investment in one of Western Australia’s most advanced STEM facilities for girls, to help position students for the challenges of the 21st century. We also learn how business integrity played a key role in the upgrade of St Elizabeth’s Catholic primary school in Hocking. At a social and caring level, Little Sisters of the Poor continue to nurture communities with a recent addition to their aged care complex at Glendalough; while the Treeby Parklands Care Community provides a balance of elegance, functionality and splendorous nature. For insight into standard-bearing niche markets, we visit Perth’s premier supplier of steel-framed kit homes, chalets, granny flats, additions and studios. And finally, we step inside a new fire station in Cockburn that sets a benchmark for firefighting services in Western Australia.
