for School Upgrade Project in Hocking

Business integrity is an integral part of Castle Projects’ DNA. So much so that, when this new company was created from a merger with Lansdown Homes and Construction in 2018, an already firmly consolidated commitment to impeccable business principles remained a cornerstone of its philosophy and operations.

Three years on, this commitment is still reflected, and indeed strengthened, in such key projects as the St Elizabeth’s Catholic primary school featured here. Located in Hocking, the $1 million upgrade was completed by Castle Projects in collaboration with another company noted in the industry for its focus on first-class client service, design excellence and meticulous project management: Parry and Rosenthal Architects.

The scope of the work comprised: ■ Enclosing the existing covered assembly building and adding an acoustic ceiling and floor finishes internally ■ Constructing a new library building ■ Completing external landscaping and paving ■ Adding a concrete ramp and stairs ■ Extending the existing covered walkway

One of the main challenges, according to project manager Jonathan Kyle, was that the school was fully operational at the time, which meant the fencing and children’s movement had to be continually altered at various stages to complete the works.

To that end, some of the work continued after hours or at weekends, or was programmed during the school holidays to minimise disruption. Nevertheless, the main works were completed three months ahead of schedule – ensuring a “very happy and satisfied client”.

As has become common during these unprecedented times, COVID-19 measures were paramount, and Castle Projects ensured all government guidelines were followed to ensure a safe working environment was created and maintained.

In addition, as the project involved a primary school, every worker had to have a police clearance. valid within the last 12 months.

The materials were selected to blend in harmoniously with the existing buildings. An attractive natural look was achieved by incorporating sand-finished exposed concrete walls to the landscaped areas, and limestone walls to the covered assembly and library – which had to be diamond-cut to exposed faces to ensure a quality finish.

Birth of a New Company S&J Developments (trading as Lansdown Homes and Lansdown Construction) was established in 2005 by directors Stephen and Jessica Lansdown. The business subsequently grew to such an impressive extent that they decided to expand and form a partnership between Steve Lansdown and his construction manager, Craig Amos.

Steve and Craig had worked together previously at BGC Construction on the Rockingham Kwinana District Hospital emergency department upgrade, and both had accumulated extensive experience in the construction industry, including churches, schools, office buildings/fit outs, retirement villages and medical facilities. In fact, “no project is too large” based on what they have achieved both separately and mutually.

Castle Projects (CASL Construction Pty Ltd) was formally established in 2018, with Stephen Lansdown and Craig Amos as sole directors – “joining forces to create a company that still embodies the ethos of building with integrity”.

Three key standards and values they remain proud to uphold are: ■ Integrity in all areas of operation ■ Excellence in workmanship ■ Ensuring clients’ needs are a priority

The company directors and staff bring together qualifications in construction, design, management, administration and engineering, and these, they note, “are combined with extensive experience in delivering exceptional quality projects using a diverse range of materials, construction methods, project complexities and budgets”.

A qualified carpenter and registered builder, Craig Amos has over 30 years of experience in the building industry, with roles including estimating, project management, contracts management, site management and general manager. The projects he has helped deliver, across three states, are diverse in both size and complexity, including schools, hospitals, warehouses and apartments.

Also a registered builder, as well as a qualified civil engineer, Steve Lansdown has 20-plus years of experience in the industry, 13 of those running his own business and covering all areas of construction. He says he discovered a love of building in his early years on site while studying, and gained experience with large construction projects, including managing sites across Perth with one of Western Australia's largest commercial builders. Both his and Craig’s attention to detail and passion ensure Castle Projects always delivers projects on time and on budget.

Broad Architectural Vision Established in 1959, Parry and Rosenthal Architects has built on the first partners’ solid foundations to become one of Western Australia’s most experienced and successful architectural consultancies.

Backed by a team of skilled, enthusiastic and friendly professionals, the company’s overriding business ethos is “to embrace the vision of our client, the functional requirements of the brief, the financial and time constraints of the budget and program, and the impact the project will have on the wider community and environment.

“Our aim is to exceed our client’s expectations by creating highly functional, economically sound, beautiful and timeless designs that will add value, lift one’s spirits, and endure gracefully and elegantly over the long term.”

Especially relevant to the St Elizabeth’s project, Parry and Rosenthal Architects has, over six decades, “acquired extensive knowledge and understanding of the unique design imperatives that are critical in the delivery of innovative educational buildings throughout Western Australia”.
