Welcome to The Carriageworks

Family

Squashbox presents

We’re proud to say here at The Carriageworks that children and their families are some of our most important audiences. This is why we love welcoming thousands of young people to the theatre to see our annual pantomime, which this year is a real Christmas Cracker. Jack and the Beanstalk (30 Nov – 5 Jan) has got us very excited, and we can’t wait to meet old friends like Leeds favourite Jez Edwards and new faces such as star of the show Marshall Lancaster (Ashes to Ashes/Doctor Who). Plus, don’t forget to look out for our ‘Cow Around Town’, Daisy!

Family pg 3 – 7

Leeds Civic Arts Guild pg 22 – 25 A host of fun-packed shows for the whole family, including a journey to the edges of space and time with Universarama (19 & 20 Sept), the East African inspired How the Lion Became King of Tinga Tinga Land (31 Oct & 1 Nov) and Carriageworks favourites Theatre of Widdershins with Rapunzel (2 Nov).

Performance pg 8 – 19 We’ve been utterly charmed this season by Victoria Melody’s Northern Soul (26 Sept). And don’t miss our Freshly Picked series of the best new contemporary theatre from across the UK and beyond, including the pick of Birmingham’s BE Festival (3 Nov), Tom Wainwright’s Buttercup (8 Nov) and Get in the Back of the Van’s Big Hits (17 Nov).

Comedy pg 20 – 21 Great new shows from some of our favourite comedians making a return to the Carriageworks – Jenny Eclair (29 Sept) and Tim Key (30 Oct). Laughs and a good time are guaranteed.

Disabled parking available on Cookridge Street alongside Leeds City Museum.

Our resident group of amateur dramatics societies give ordinary members of the public the opportunity to tread the boards at a professional theatre. Why not support their work by coming to see a show – or even joining up and taking the plunge yourself?

Film & Events pg 26

Universarama

Don’t miss the return of the Adventure Film Festival (23-25 October) – three evenings of adrenaline-pumping action and adventure films.

Participatory Arts pg 27 – 29 We’re delighted to welcome back Shakespeare Schools Festival (13–15 Nov) with youthful performances from schools in the local community. On Stage Theatre Arts Academy also return with their early season panto Dick Whittington (6 & 7 Oct).

Children welcome. For more info see page 33.

Want to book a conference or rehearsal room?

Let Professor Johnson of the Squashbox Theatre Astounding and Amazing Astronomical Research Society (S.T.A.A.A.A.R.S) take you on a journey to the edges of space and time! Along the way we will explore the solar system, study the stars and constellations, visit distant galaxies, and hear the fascinating story of John Couch Adams, the man who discovered Neptune. Using only silly puppets, ridiculous and unnecessary props, simple household objects and assorted fruits and vegetables, Professor Johnson will reveal the secrets of the universe in a marvellous blend of spectacle, storytelling and cabaret. It is the creation of Craig Johnson – actor, musician, puppeteer, astronomy fan, and long-standing member of Cornwall’s renowned Kneehigh Theatre.

Coming Spring 2013

Deep in the forest, by the banks of a great river, lived a large crocodile. He was a very selfish crocodile and he wouldn’t share this river with any of the other creatures. He thought it was HIS river! So, the animals stayed away. But, one day there was a terrible scream, – the crocodile had a toothache. Nobody dared to help him, until a brave little mouse found a clever way to solve this snappy dilemma. This is a funny, heart-warming tale with a very happy ending, which reminds us all that the smallest act of kindness often has the greatest impact.

Five performers and two drummers lead children and their families through a high-octane story full of music, puppets, dancing, and lots of things to join in with. Learn about the characters, hear their stories and join in by singing songs, playing drums, painting pictures, learning dances and taking part in group activities. Starring Lion (a proud animal), Monkey (a fun and cheeky animal), Bird (a wise motherly character), Zebra (a serious worrier) and Hippo (a fun silly character). As seen on Inspired by the hit CBeebies/Tiger Aspect TV show Tinga Tinga Tales and CBeebies original artwork from the Tinga Tinga family.

Beulah

Beating Berlusconi

Arthur Hoyle has bitten off more than he can chew! He’s bet everything he owns on a single game of rugby. Now he has to train the local shambles that is The Wheatsheaf Arms to defeat the ‘unbeatable’ Cobblers. And it’s not going to be easy. From the pen of local favourite, John Godber this is the perfect mix of Rocky and Peter Kay’s Phoenix Nights. A love letter to rugby, northern humour and Yorkshire, Up ‘n Under is packed with laugh out loud gags, touching moments and an exciting match of “the gentlemen’s game”.

Musical Theatre Matters award-nominated company The Flanagan Collective make their first visit to The Carriageworks with a brand new folk musical about time, dreams, reality and William Blake. Beulah looks at the inexplicable spaces in between things: where dreams mix with reality, where night mixes with day, and sunrises with sunsets. Straddling the gap between this world and the next, this is a beautiful and delicate tale which measures in heartbeats and breaths, not just seconds and hours, and questions the very fabric we are made from.

Fresh from ecstatic reviews, Paul Duckworth and his thirty-five characters take to the road again in this hilarious, lump in your throat comedy. Beating Berlusconi is based on the now famous true story of a real Liverpool fan that ended up sitting next to Silvio Berlusconi at the Attaturk Stadium. What happened to Liverpool FC in the second half is legend. What happened to Kenny in the AC Milan directors’ box is stranger than fiction.

when you buy tickets for Miss Havisham’s Expectations and Northern Soul at the same time.

To coincide with the Dickens bicentenary, Linda Marlowe presents a new solo show featuring one of his most iconic characters, Miss Havisham, from one of his most celebrated books – Great Expectations. This jilted bride, stuck forever in her wedding dress, alongside the stopped clock and untouched cake, is desperate to set the record straight. ‘Norma’ Havisham reveals a love-hate relationship with her creator Dickens, “a man who liked to play God with his female characters but had little understanding of them”. The show draws on the text of Great Expectations and biographical material from Dickens’ life, as well as original material by writer-director Di Sherlock. It is presented in a tour-de-force performance by the awardwinning Linda Marlowe, previously seen at The Carriageworks in the stunning The World’s Wife.

Ollie Smith Double Bill:

Wed 26 September

Two new pieces from Emerge supported artist Ollie Smith. Real rockstars die aged 27. Ollie Smith is 26. He is not a rockstar. Yet. Sitting somewhere between a grubby gig, a fanatic lecture and a Jonestown-esque cult meeting, 27 is a darkly humorous show that stirs up the myths surrounding the notorious 27 Club: a group of legendary musicians who all died at just 27 years of age. In a work-in-progress showing of Cat in Hell, Mr Mistoffelees from Cats meets Mephistopheles from Faust. Ollie and Olwen invite you to a spangly show about getting the cream and choking on it. Expect sleek whiskers and snazzy pyjamas; conjuring tricks and confetti; fate and fortune and luck and sleaze and shuffling about in the dregs.

Big Hits

Buttercup is a fat cow from Lancashire. She’s lovely. She’s really looking forward to meeting you all. She can’t wait to tell you, amongst other things, how she won Masterchef by feeding her stillborn baby to a fish and a potato. And what happened when she was made the star of her own TV show The Only Way is Lancashire. Buttercup is the latest creation from Bristol based writer/performer Tom Wainwright. It’s a back to basics storytelling show that is winning friends across the UK.

Hello, Welcome, You look very nice. We’re Big Hits and we’re on a mission. You’ll learn SELFIMPROVEMENT here with us tonight and you will COMPLETELY improve yourself. That way you can be better in the world. Are you ready? Because if you’re not you’re running out of TIME. We’re going to blast our hearts RIGHT OUT for you right here for you. Do you feel FREE? This one’s for you. Big Hits is looking for a good time and staring hard at censorship, propriety, and the violence that can erupt when noise is stifled. An Unruly Voice is at large; the music’s turned up high.

Leeds Civic Arts Guild Leeds Art Theatre presents

Anyone For Murder Max and his lover Suzy have concocted a plot to kill Max’s wife Janet, with ten thousand pounds’ insurance money as an added bonus. Then two unexpected visitors arrive in the shape of George and Mary Tickle, who have an eye on the money, and murderous plans of their own. Thus begins an intriguing round of plot and counter-plot, with a final, unexpected twist.

Leeds Civic Arts Guild is an association of various amateur drama, music and opera companies who perform regularly at The Carriageworks. The following pages include some of the fantastic shows coming up from the Guild societies this season. There’s something for everyone, from spectacular musicals to classic drama. Which will you be seeing? Leeds Civic Arts Guild has a growing membership and you can take part too!

An amateur production in association with Samuel French Ltd

Everyone is welcome, from old hands to complete novices. This might be the opportunity you’ve always wanted to tread the boards and become the star of the show. Or you could experience the thrill of being backstage by getting involved in lighting, sound and set building. For more information or to join up, email enquiries@lcag.org.uk or visit www.lcag.org.uk.

Calendar Girls

Duets

When twelve extraordinary members of the Women’s Institute decide they need to find a new way to raise money for a very worthy cause, they turn to their annual calendar. However, they decide to give the calendar a very untraditional twist – behind the buns, the marmalade and the flower arrangements are the women – completely nude! This heartfelt story will have you laughing and crying at the same time.

Four sets of characters, four crucial moments. Jonathan and Wendy are on a blind date and hoping to get it right this time even though they’ve never got it right before. Barrie is not really interested in women, but Janet sees that as no reason to stop trying. Shelley and Bobby have decided to holiday in Spain to finalise their divorce. Angela is marrying for the third time to the dismay of her brother Toby, amidst a barrage of bad omens and a dress resembling a parachute. A hilarious insight in to the chaotic world of love and relationships.

This production is supporting Leukemia & Lymphoma Research. An amateur production in association with Samuel French Ltd
