“The horrors of war and the joyfulness of life are bound up together in this magnificent show” THE SCOTSMAN

A powerful story of hope that relives the life of Private Tommo Peaceful, a young First World War soldier awaiting the firing squad at dawn. During the night he looks back at his short but joyful past growing up in rural Devon: his exciting first days at school; the accident in the forest that killed his father; his adventures with Molly, the love of his life; and the battles and injustices of war that brought him to the front line. Winner of the Blue Peter Book of the Year, Private Peaceful is written by the third Children’s Laureate, Michael Morpurgo, and takes to the road following two hugely successful UK tours and sell-out West End runs. Michael Morpurgo is also known as the author of War Horse, the book produced as a stage play at the National Theatre that has gone on to be a West End and Broadway hit.

Where’s Your Mama Gone? Written by Brian Daniels Dramaturgy by Gareth Tudor-Price (Hull Truck Theatre)

Leeds, 1978. Eight year old twins Stephen and Carol lose their mother to serial killer Paul Sutton. Put into care they face a life-long struggle. Will they overcome the traumatic events of their early lives? Or will they remain victims, branded and haunted by the past? And what fate will befall their mother’s murderer? This world premiere by Brian Daniels is inspired by the true story of the Yorkshire Ripper and his own experiences of growing up in Leeds. It explores questions of heritage and how we cope with loss. The play is supported by an exhibition featuring the experiences of those who have spent some of their childhood in institutional care, which is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and supported by Stowe Family Law LLP. Some performances will be followed by post-show discussions.

Epic

Nobody & Beyond

With Epic we will go on a quest for History, the big one, written about in books. The one with World Wards in it, with memorable dates and names you learn at school, but also the personal one, the human one, the one you can relate to. A playful and experimental journey through the past one hundred years, Epic combines personal stories, video interaction, fanciful reenactments of key twentieth century events, and a cameo from Bertolt Brecht. It creates moments of intimacy while also connecting us to the bigger picture.

International choreographers and dancers Lucia Petrusova (formerly of T.R.A.S.H) and Karla Shacklock (formerly of Precarious) are intent on challenging the norms of physical performance, and have been working across countries to present this boundary-blurring double bill. Combining cutting-edge costume design, highoctane raw performance and live composition, the two new works explore bodies as forms of physical matter and delve deep into the humanity of self, to go far beyond what we thought physically and vocally possible. Roll-up the carpet and push back the chairs! Untied Artists and The Gramophone Party bring you a rip-roaring evening of live music, theatre and dance celebrating the life of 1930’s crooner, Al Bowlly. While stock markets crashed, war loomed, and the world moved faster than ever before, Bowlly was redefining singing into the tender, expressive style that paved the way for pop. An inspiration to generations of singers and artists, his songs have featured in the cult films Amelie, The Shining and Dennis Potter’s seminal Pennies From Heaven. This show tells his story in a way that’s fast paced, funny, charming, and as liberal with the truth as the man himself was. Featuring live music from the audaciously talented Gramophone Party and performance from Jake Oldershaw (associate artist Stan’s Cafe) and Nick Tigg (Slot Machine, The People Show). Following the show Breezecard holders aged 13 – 19 are invited to join in a special Tea Dance with Lindy Hop and music from the show. Just book with Box Office. “Beautifully thought out… Told with passion and performed with real dynamism”

by Alan M Kent

An incredible journey from the mines of Cornwall to the fields of Flanders and back again. Set around the events of the First World War, this poignant drama follows the lives of three members of the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. Along the way we watch characters fall in and out of love, meet with angry beauties, and befriend the very first surfers in the unlikeliest of surroundings. This darkly mischievous play makes comment on conflict around the world and explores what it means to be far from where you long to be.

Gareth Richards & Wittank

Following the huge success of his 2010 tour, Al Murray: The Pub Landlord is extending time at the bar by adding more dates to his Barrel of Fun Tour. Britain’s best-known Pub Philosopher will be serving up his own special brew of bar room banter at venues across the UK. The new run of shows will see the Guv going back to basics; returning to many of the intimate venues where he made his name. Tickets are guaranteed to sell out fast, so get your order in now.

A special double headliner from two of the hottest comics on the circuit right now. Zaltzman, star of worldwide smash hit podcast The Bugle and Radio 4’s Andy Zaltzman’s History of the Third Millennium, is under oath, and on a mission to solve the all of the planet’s problems. Triple Perrier Nominee and winner of the 2009 Dave Award for Funniest Joke of the Fringe, Dan Antopolsky brings us his new show. It will definitely contain many high-quality stealable one-liners, sage remarks about life and bad parenthood, a rap about the benefits of laser ownership – and, new for 2011, the pitiless subordination of a professional manservant.

Another in a series of our great value double headliners. Gareth Richards’ engaging observational comedy, inspired one-liners and mischievously funny songs have made him an instant hit on the comedy circuit. At last year’s Edinburgh Festival he was nominated for the prestigious Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best Newcomer. Wittank provide big characters, inventive sketches and fast-paced fun for those who enjoy a riot, but would rather sit in a theatre and laugh. Hotly tipped as ones to watch, be charmed by three men who take silly very seriously.

The 39 Steps

Bad Girls

This bawdy comedy, written in 1675, was controversial even in its own time for its sexual explicitness, and was considered too outrageous to be performed at all between 1753 and 1924. Since then it has been regularly revived, and is now considered to be one of the wittiest and best of the restoration comedies in which, according to Sir Richard Steele, “love and wenching were the business of life.”

Take a Hitchcock film masterpiece, mix it with a delicious spy novel, then add a bit of Monty Python silliness and wit, and the result is The 39 Steps – a fast-moving mystery full of laughs, thrills, and theatre magic that tells the tale of an ordinary man on an extraordinarily entertaining adventure. The show contains every single legendary scene from the award-winning movie – including the chase on the Flying Scotsman, the escape on the Forth Bridge, the first theatrical bi-plane crash ever staged and the sensational death-defying finale in the London Palladium.

Telling the story of life in the fictional, allwomen’s prison Larkhall, Bad Girls returns to Leeds after the original production premiered at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in 2007. Never shying away from the darker side of prison life, Bad Girls explores the warmth, compassion and defiant sense of humour that can triumph even behind bars. Contains adult themes.

Tarab Dance presents

The Journey of Bellydance We follow the story of a group of dancers working together to produce a finale piece for their new production. Their desire to reflect what ‘Belly Dance’ really means today takes the audience on a journey to look at perceptions of Belly Dance in both Middle Eastern and Western culture and how the interplay of these cultures has developed the dance to its current status. Diverse and exciting choreographies intermingle with a narrative that guides the audience through the show.
