Grisly Tales From Tumblewater “There are two things that men should never weary of, goodness and humility. We get none too much of them in this rough world among cold, proud people.” An adventure tale for all the family, this fast paced adaptation tells the story of Davie Balfour as he survives shipwreck and murder to dramatically escape through the Highlands of Scotland in an exciting, gripping adventure story packed full of physical storytelling and imagination.

8 Box Office: 0113 224 3801

Adapted by dynamic playwright Ivan Wilkinson, Kidnapped chronicles the adventures of Alan Breck and Davie Balfour as they escape murder and shipwreck on a quest for justice, set against the fierce social and political backdrop of 1760s Scotland. This highly imaginative re-telling of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic story is perfect for young and old alike.

Welcome to Tumblewater – not that it’s a welcoming place unless you’re an undertaker or umbrella salesman. Caspian Prye, the twisted land owner, controls everything and everyone, even the police. Into this world stumbles fearless orphan Daniel Dorey, armed only with his wits and a satchel of spinechilling stories. Can he bring down Caspian Prye? Can he stay alive long enough to tell his tales? Dickens meets Dahl via Horrible Histories with laughs, frights and live music for all.

Red Riding Hood

Bin Men

A young girl, a hungry wolf and a walk through the woods – it sounds like a recipe for disaster, but Red Riding Hood’s not scared… well maybe she’s a little bit scared. Horse and Bamboo present a gorgeously rendered re-telling of the classic girl-andthe-wolf tale. Exquisite visuals blend with pantomime-style silliness and spooky moments to create an enchanting piece of theatre.

Bin men see everything we throw away – and we throw away so many things. With Don and Sam around we may just need to think again; they can find a use for anything. Written by multi-award winning writer Mike Kenny and directed by Rosamunde Hutt this is a story of recycling and transforming told with live music, puppetry, a touch of Don Quixote and lots of fun. Children’s theatre to remember.

The Witches

A Day of Pleasure

by Roald Dahl, adapted by David Wood

Written by Isaac Bashevis Singer Performed by Stuart Richman

‘Witches? Silly black hats, cloaks, riding on broomsticks?’

Stories of a boy growing up in Warsaw. New York, 1978. The cab driver is waiting to take him to the airport. The evening before he travels to Stockholm to collect the Nobel Prize for Literature, Isaac Bashevis Singer – a passionate, brilliant storyteller – recalls a fascinating childhood full of mystery, torment and adventure. A Day of Pleasure is about more than a young boy growing up in a strange and exotic world; it is about growing up itself. Singer brings to life the vivid characters of pre-war Warsaw, his own character and the human conditions that affect us all.

If that’s what you think a witch is, you are very much mistaken! A real witch looks like an ordinary lady and has no greater pleasure than squelching children. Can you save yourself? Only if you learn how to spot one! Come along for the adventure and find out what would happen should you run into a real witch… An amateur production in association with Samuel French Ltd.

The Wardrobe Ensemble use soulful stories, macho choreography and original music to present their take on the Chilean miner crisis of 2010. 33 tells the tale of the thirty three men stuck half a mile under the ground, the journalists in the desert above them and the world that watched them from afar. A tale of friendship, hope and Elvis Presley, 33 takes you beyond the newsrooms, past the cameras and leaves you 2,000 feet under the ground. An outlandish, touching and funny modern-legend of men on the brink of death, fame and madness.

‘I was entertained, moved and inspired to see such dynamic ensemble work and creative theatre making. They chose brilliantly challenging material and approached it in a fast/edit, fresh and fearless way.’ EMMA RICE, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, KNEEHIGH

Carriageworks Theatre:

Here at Carriageworks Theatre we value children and they are at the heart of our programming. There are shows for tots to teens. Please note under 13s must be accompanied by an adult. All events are suitable for families, a few are a little more adult than others. Guidance about age suitability is always available from our Box Office and children's shows are clearly highlighted on the event listing.

In addition to the 349 seater Main Auditorium, a further six meeting rooms are available for conferencing, meetings and workshops, accommodating various numbers of delegates. All conference rooms provide AV equipment, air conditioning and support from a dedicated commercial team.

At Carriageworks Theatre: • There are pre-show activities for under 10s

This brochure is available in large print and tape by contacting 0113 224 3139.

• Baby changing facilities are available on all floors in the unisex disabled toilets

Guide Dogs are welcome and bowls of water supplied.

Hearing Enhancements

A unique business destination

Three of the six meeting rooms are situated in the historic part of the old Carriageworks development. These attractive meeting spaces reveal exposed brickwork and roof beams in keeping with the Victorian architecture whilst providing a light and airy studio feel. These rooms are also available to hire for evening rehearsals, workshops and classes at a reasonable competitive rate. 20% discount available for arts and charity organisations. Please call 0113 395 2157 or email carriageworksvenue@leeds.gov.uk for more information.

Parking A variety of street parking and secure car park options are available nearby with the nearest facilities including: • St John’s Shopping Centre (long stay) • The Light (long stay) • Woodhouse Lane There are also several disabled parking spaces on Cookridge Street, just around the corner from the entrance to the Carriageworks Theatre.
