Summer 2014

Welcome to Summer at Carriageworks Theatre Magic is in the air this season at Carriageworks Theatre. Young tykes will be captivated by the mending magic of The Elves and The Shoemaker, while older families won’t believe their eyes as comedic magician Ben Hart performs sleight of hand and other amazements. Celtic roots Irish group Abandoman explode onto our stage with their side-splitting improvised rap performance and stars of YouTube Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre return with an all new very cheeky show. For lit lovers Ernest and the Pale Moon’s blend of Hitchcock and Poe will send chills down your spine. Or let H.G. Wells’ The Time Machine fling you on an adventure back and forth through time. Then delve into the lives of two fascinating but troubled souls; the guy next door in The Hoarder and the internationally recognised painter in Frida.

Drop by this Summer, Councillor Lucinda Yeadon Executive Member for Leisure & Skills

1895. In a suburban garden, beneath a waning moon, a man lies dazed beside a remarkable machine. He has a story to tell. A story of darkness and light. Of fire and fear. Of Eloi and Morlocks. An unbelievable story about our future that he insists is true… Is it a joke? A prophecy? A dream? Nunkie, the company behind the acclaimed M R James Trilogy, brings H G Wells’ science fiction classic to life in another thrilling one-man show.

Waiting for Godot

The Hoarder

By Samuel Beckett

A Tragicomedy in Two Acts. A Country Road. A Tree. Evening. Waiting for Godot exploded on to stage over 50 years ago and revolutionised theatre. Shocking as many people as it amused and impressed, there had never been a play like it. Two men joke, argue and repeat themselves, as they wait. Combining music hall, poetry and tension, it redefines what is possible in theatre. It is now accepted as one of the most significant plays of the 20th century.

Thurs 1 – Sat 3 May

Inspired by the astonishing true story of chronic hoarder Richard Wallace, whose hoarding is so out of control that his own life is in danger. Mountains of papers and packaging fill his home from floor to ceiling and trap Richard in a world of his own, away from his community and any human connection. Sticks Theatre have devised this touching piece that tells the story of how, with a little understanding, friendship can make a world of difference. Join the cast for a post show talk on this remarkable true story that touches on every human emotion.

Up Pompeii

Ben Hart – The Outsider

Based on the original characters devised for the Frankie Howerd BBC comedy, this hilarious romp through ancient Pompeii brings back all the television favourites in this full-length play. As Lurcio attempts to deliver his prologue and begin proceedings, he’s quickly caught up in the myriad of sexual liaisons in all quarters of his master’s house. Whilst growing chaos ensues, an increasing rumbling is heard in the distance – what could this possibly be? A riot from start to finish.

Directed by Anthony Owen (Derren Brown/The Real Hustle)

Having spent his life using magic to solve impossible problems, award-winning magician Ben Hart turns his attention to himself. Be amazed by his magic, impressed by his skill and moved by how the owner of such a brilliant mind can still be so in need of a cup of tea and a cuddle... The Tiger and The Moustache

Life Cycle

Born on the very first day of a new nation, Hashi, the girl who always smiles, grew up surrounded by flying tigers in the Sunderban jungles. Saikat Ahamed traces the journey of Hashi, his mother, and the emerging nation of Bangladesh. Travel with him as he slides in and out of time from the agonies of Partition in 1947 right up to the present day, as we board fishing boats up the Megna River and rickshaws along the dusty roads of Dacca. From East London to East Bengal, the story of Bangladesh is woven together through storytelling, theatre, live music, dance and a healthy amount of humour.

A lone cyclist riding towards us looks back at his life, from his first ride without stabilisers to his first racer, riding tandem with his first love to crossing the finish line ahead of his rivals and eventually being forced to hang up his racing shoes. With mountains to climb and potholes to be avoided, the cyclist must safely find his place on the road. Sticks Theatre present the thoughts and voices of cyclists (hobbyists, amateurs and professionals) collected and forged into a highly physical and visual theatrical text with music for the piece created live.

The story begins on a normal day in the life of the town, as yet uninterrupted by the devastation of war. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the First World War, The Accrington Pals explores the many ways the conflict left a lasting impact on lives, loves and communities of the women left behind and their men facing death overseas. The Accrington Pals is a touching, yet harrowing, piece of theatre which reminds its audience to never forget the brave people whose lives were forever changed by conflict.

The Mexican painter Frida Kahlo is now regarded as one of the most significant artists of the twentieth century. Severely injured in a bus crash in her youth, she took up painting when confined to her bed. Interplay’s latest sensory theatre piece blossoms from the life of Frida Kahlo.
