Welcome to the Carriageworks Theatre Carriageworks Theatre is a building of old meets new. Built originally as a carriage manufacturers in 1848, the space was reworked and opened in 2005 as it is today. The modern venue has multiple performance spaces, bars and rehearsal rooms. The theatre provides family entertainment for families of all ages. From tots to teens and adults alike, there is something in this programme for all to enjoy. Alongside the shows are educational opportunities for all, with one off workshops, classes and year round groups to grow your interest and knowledge of the arts. The team are proud to support grassroots arts in Leeds; through partnership and skills sharing, they nurture small and local theatre companies to realise their potential to produce high quality performance in a professional environment.

Leeds Civic Arts Guild The Leeds Civic Arts Guild is the ‘umbrella’ association of 13 amateur drama, music, opera, youth theatre and other voluntary arts societies that are based at the Carriageworks Theatre, who produce a variety of shows between September and July each year. Bite My Thumb and Northern Spark present

A Midsummer Night’s Dream On a moonlit evening during the summer of love, four young lovers find themselves wrapped in the arms of an enchanted forest where poppies grow and fairies rule. While a feuding Fairy King and Queen are at war, their paths are crossed by an amateur dramatics group rehearsing a play. The course of true love is anything but smooth, and games of fantasy, love and drug filled dreams ensue in this new staging of Shakespeare’s most popular comedy. This special co production re-unites the multi award-winning team of Northern Spark Theatre and Bite My Thumb to bring you a magical 2017 tour.

Rent Rent tells the exhilarating story of a group of artists struggling to survive in NYC’s Bohemia. Whilst a tragedy has made Roger numb to life, Mark tries to capture it through his attempts to make a film. The group deals with love, loss, and modern day life in one powerful story. Inspired by La Bohème, featuring unforgettable songs such as Seasons of Love and Take Me or Leave Me. Join LIDOS as they bring you this award-winning rock musical!

Thought Bubble Thought Bubble Festival takes place in Leeds City Centre from 18th to 24th September 2017, with a huge comic convention on 23rd and 24th. There, he meets Kate (the girl next door), Brian (the bum), Rod (the Republican), Trekkie (the resident sex-pert!), superintendent Gary Coleman (yes, that Gary Coleman) and other new colourful friends! Together, they struggle to find jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life. The Thrill of Love

Suitable for 12 years and upwards, Finding Joy is accessible to hearing and D/deaf audiences alike.

Ruth Ellis was the last woman to be hanged in Britain in 1955 after being convicted of shooting her lover, David Blakely, in cold blood. The Thrill of Love dramatises this infamous true story taking a closer look at the women behind the headlines. Why does their relationship end in murder? Why does she plead not guilty and offer no defence or show remorse? Who was she trying to protect?

Honour, justice, magic and transformation collide in a story as relevant today as it ever was, where people seek to spin, manipulate and control, and nature reveals its deep power. Featuring one of Wales’ most engaging storytellers alongside exquisitely haunting live music, English and Welsh are artfully woven together to make these ancient voices and living landscapes come alive in an exhilarating performance.

Leeds Arts Centre present

Blood and Ice Liz Lochhead, Appointed Scots Makar, the National Poet for Scotland from 2011–2016, tells the tale of the creation of the story of Frankenstein. Through Mary Shelley’s flashbacks we see the eerie similarities between the story and her own life. This beautifully written play gives a fascinating insight into the lives of Mary Shelley, Percy Bysshe Shelley and Lord Byron and covers philosophical and political issues that are just as relevant now as they were back in the 19th Century when Shelley began writing the novel. Come and see another side to Frankenstein in its 200th anniversary year!

Northern Youth Theatre present

High School Musical NYTC’s production of the smash hit movie musical is a must see for all the family, with a large cast and upbeat numbers. Come and watch Troy, Gabriella, and the students of East High deal with issues of first love, friends, and family while balancing their classes and extra curricular activities! It’s the first day after winter break at East High. The Jocks, Brainiacs, Thespians and Skater Dudes find their cliques, recount their vacations, and look forward to the New Year. Basketball team captain and resident jock Troy discovers that the brainy Gabriella, a girl he met singing karaoke on his ski trip, has just enrolled at East High. They cause an upheaval when they decide to audition for the high school musical, led by Ms. Darbus. Although many students resent the threat posed to the ‘status quo’, Troy and Gabriella’s alliance might just open the door for others to shine as well.

Meet the most unusual duckling the pond has ever seen! In their nest at the edge of a pond, the baby ducklings wait impatiently for Mummy’s enormous egg to hatch. But their new brother doesn’t look like everyone else. He doesn’t even quack like a proper duckling! Teased and called Ugly by his siblings, our hero goes on an adventure in search of a place to fit in. Moving through all four seasons, tutti frutti and York Theatre Royal bring to life Hans Christian Andersen’s well known tale. With a menagerie of mischievous animals, this charming production plays with the importance of identity and takes us on a journey to discover inner beauty.

One that is not often told; The story of a woman who exacts her revenge on the men that destroyed her and the Gods that cursed her. We are going to tell you the story of Medusa, the truth. This modern adaptation shows Medusa growing up, in modern society and sheds light on the softer side of the ‘monster’ we think we know. This powerful story has echoed throughout generations and through a contemporary setting we see how her story is still important and relevant today. Covering his early riding days in Germany, the mountain bike boom in America, his extreme biking feats and adventures – which include the first bike descent of Mt. Kenya, riding the Indian Himalayas, the Alps and Inca Trail, and traversing the Sinai Desert – and how his charity Wheels4Life is changing the world one bike at a time, Hans will also offer his vision on the future of the sport and what keeps him motivated.

PAGE TO STAGE An Evening of New Writing Five sharp, thought provoking pieces of new writing performed script in hand – giving the writers an opportunity to see their work start to come to life. Goodnight Mister Tom follows the journey of a young boy, William Beech, as he is evacuated from London during the air-raids of World War II and put into the care of Tom Oakley, an elderly recluse. It is here William finds more than just protection from the falling bombs and Tom Oakley also finds himself saved by young William. You will become a member of one of two groups led by professional theatre director Ruth Cooper – the 10-14s or 15-19s. Older members may also work toward a Bronze or Silver Arts Award. Both groups meet every Saturday during term time. In addition to the 349 seater Main Auditorium, The Studio (formally known as Upstairs @ the Carriageworks) is an intimate and flexible black box studio with a standard capacity of 55. A further six meeting rooms are available for conferencing, meetings and workshops, accommodating various numbers of delegates. All conference rooms come with AV equipment, air conditioning and support from a dedicated commercial team.

Three of the six meeting rooms are situated in the historic part of the old Carriageworks development. These attractive meeting spaces reveal exposed brickwork and roof beams in keeping with the Victorian architecture whilst providing a light and airy studio feel. These rooms are also available to hire at a competitive rate for evening rehearsals, special occasions, workshops and classes.

People of all ages are welcome at Carriageworks Theatre. We take pride in being a child friendly venue. Below are some of the steps we take to be as accessible for children and young people as we can. 1 Age guidance is available in the advertising or from Box Office 1 Pre-show activities for under 10s 1 Baby changing facilities are available on all floors in the unisex accessible toilets 1 Child booster seats are available 1 Breast-feeding mothers are welcome 1 A buggy parking area will be available on show days to keep the auditorium clutter free and safe 1 Children under one year old come for free (But will not be given a specified seat) Please note: Under 14s must be accompanied by an adult.

The venue is fully accessible and has accessible toilets on every level. A number of spaces in the auditorium are reserved for wheelchair users. Please let us know, when booking, of any special access requirements you may have.
