Miss Julie

Kevin Precious

Hedgepig Theatre’s retelling of Strindberg’s revolutionary play Miss Julie, sets this classic tale of lust, power and betrayal against the backdrop of the decadent and debauched Jazz era, where both a sexual and class revolution were bubbling under the surface. Midsummer celebrations, 1923. Jazz floats on the air, wine flows freely as rank and position are put aside for one night. As the evening unfolds secrets are revealed, passions are uncovered and the course of lives are changed forever. Desire overcomes duty, as servant and mistress struggle for power and one woman’s sexual awakening leads to her ultimate downfall.

Not Appropriate

After a very well received performance last year, former teacher turned stand-up comedian Kevin Precious returns with his show about the trials and tribulations of the teaching profession. Not Appropriate is the most overused term of disapproval in the teacher’s canon. A show that will appeal to anyone who has ever taught or – for that matter – been to school; parts of which are likely to be not appropriate.

Jane Eyre By Charlotte Brontë • Adapted by Laura Turner • Directed by Nick Lane

‘I am no bird; and no net ensnares me; I am a free human being with an independent will’ From a harsh childhood controlled by unfeeling adults, Jane Eyre has to rely on her own courage and convictions to make her way in the world. She longs to learn. She dares to dream. Employed as a governess, she travels across the bleak Yorkshire moors to the mysterious Thornfield Hall – a house of locked doors with a dangerous secret. There she meets the strange, sardonic and intriguing Mr Rochester. Can the constraints of society and the dark past be overcome? Should Jane trust her head or follow her heart? Hull Truck Theatre brings to life the classic story of love, loss and redemption in an intriguing new adaptation of one of the great gothic novels, directed by Nick Lane (Lady Chatterley’s Lover, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde).

‘Political comedy at its best’ Sunday Times

A remarkable piece of verbatim theatre, The Good and The True weaves the true testimonies of two extraordinary people. Athlete Milos Dobry and actress Hana Pravda spent their working lives building suspense, knocking crowds in to submission and drawing gasps from their onlookers. Both survived Auschwitz and witnessed murder at first hand. Did they both have exceptional strength of character and a will of iron or was their survival just ‘good luck’?

The Visit

Candide

By Friedrich Durrenmatt

Voltaire’s celebrated work of comic and philosophic genius is one of the glories of eighteenth century satire. Candide explores a world dominated by violence, greed, war and hatred and a series of catastrophic events seemingly unmitigated by goodness, truth, beauty or God. Against a backdrop spanning two continents, two young lovers seek meaning, happiness and fulfilment. With Berrnstein’s brilliant score and Wilbur’s witty lyrics, Candide is a work of unalloyed pleasure. LYO’s production offers a rare opportunity to see a classic modern musical in an energetic, contemporary staging.

The time is the present, the place, Guellen, somewhere in central Europe. The rich and powerful Claire Zachanassian arrives in the town of her childhood, now a place of poverty, depression and decay. The citizens hope for financial aid from Claire to stimulate the economy and bring prosperity back to Guellen. Alfred Ill and Claire were once young lovers and the town’s folk are relying upon Alfred to encourage Claire’s benevolence. He is popular and his anticipated success in securing Claire’s generosity has resulted in much acclaim and promise of advancement. However, the gift when offered is not unconditional.

The Selfish Crocodile Deep in the forest, by the banks of a great river, lived a large crocodile. He was a very selfish crocodile and he wouldn’t share this river with any of the other creatures. He thought it was HIS river! So the animals stayed away. But, one day there was a terrible scream – the crocodile had a toothache. Nobody dared help him, until a brave little mouse found a clever way to solve this snappy dilemma. This is a funny, heart-warming tale with a very happy ending, which reminds us all that the smallest act of kindness often has the greatest impact.

It’s A Musical World

It sometimes felt as though time had stood still on the family farm – swallows nesting in the eaves, the old Fordson Tractor quietly rusting in the back of the barn, Grandpa still tending his chickens – that is, until the summer his grandson finished school and came to stay, and the old man started telling stories of what it had been like on the farm when he was a boy. The compelling sequel to the award-winning War Horse is a moving account of the changing face of the English countryside and a beautifully-crafted reminder that stories really can reach out across the generations.

Following critically-acclaimed runs at both the 2010 Edinburgh Festival Fringe and the 2011 Brits Off Broadway Festival in New York, plus a hugely successful UK tour, this magical tale of the bonds linking grandfather to grandson and ultimately both to the land has once more been brought to life by New Perspectives Theatre Company. A delightful show combining drama, storytelling and original music.

An exciting musical theatre production from the Junior Academy – visiting many countries to sing and perform extracts from musicals and well known songs. Childrens’ ages range from 4 to 18 years and many of the pupils join the full time college when they reach 16 years and go on to have wonderful careers! Farrah Hussain joined SLP Junior Academy at 3 years then entered the College at 17 years and went straight into the European tour of Fame and the King And I upon graduation.

The prequel to the award-winning, sell-out production Scenes Unseen, is a play which looks at different disabilities – some visible, others hidden. This is a roller coaster portrayal of life with a disability, from the point of view of the disabled person, their family and other people who have difficulty in understanding, due to their prejudice or inability to change. Based on episodes from the author’s life, you may laugh, you may cry, but you WILL think.

Greg Wohead presents

I like the way you wear your hair Welcome to Greg’s bedroom in Texas, 1998. The Savage Garden CD is on repeat, there’s a pile of dirty laundry in the corner and he can’t stop thinking about Sara. In this solo performance Greg tells you – from the perspective of a geeky teenager – the true story of the night he took a chance. I like the way you wear your hair is a conversation with a past version of yourself. It’s about stomach butterflies, private thoughts and a marching band conveyed with storytelling and a pico projector, throwing hand-drawn memories and DIY atmosphere onto the walls, floor and ceiling.

Britain. 2013. Times are hard, but the money’s still out there if you know where to look and are prepared to gamble. Whether it’s prison or the corporate world, there are rules to be followed. Only the fittest survive. It’s every man for himself. A searing, funny and thought-provoking new play from Ben Tagoe (Cold Turkey at Nana’s – Oran Mor / Perth Theatre, Bittersweet Sunshine – Red Ladder and BBC Writers Academy), The Thing About Psychopaths asks important questions about power and empathy in modern Britain.

The Story is Not Set in Stone Matthew and Alison are trapped in a library. They have written themselves into a corner and they are trying to get out. Rather like Oedipus at the cross roads, they are wondering which way to go; how to avoid bringing destruction down upon themselves by making the wrong choice and taking the wrong road... This is a show about stories and why we tell them. Do the tales we tell help us make sense of our lives, or do they stop us from moving forward?

Written by Tom Needham

A gripping courtroom drama When Caroline Bentham successfully defends a head teacher accused of rape, it’s a pivotal moment for both of them. His job and reputation are saved and the case relaunches Caroline’s career. Tagged the ‘rape queen’ by her colleagues, she becomes a specialist in defending men charged with similar crimes. The Carriageworks: A unique business destination In addition to the 349 seater Main Auditorium, a further six meeting rooms are available for conferencing, meetings and workshops, accommodating various numbers of delegates. All conference rooms provide AV equipment, air conditioning and support from a dedicated commercial team. Three of the six meeting rooms are situated in the historic part of the old Carriageworks development. These attractive meeting spaces reveal exposed brickwork and roof beams in keeping with the Victorian architecture whilst providing a light and airy studio feel. These rooms are also available to hire for evening rehearsals, workshops and classes at a reasonable competitive rate. Please call 0113 395 2157 or email carriageworksvenue@leeds.gov.uk for more information.
