Vamos Theatre in co-commission with London International Mime Festival present
This summer we are proud to present one of Carriageworks Theatre’s broadest programmes yet. Popular Radio DJ Stuart Maconie talks about his new book The Pie at Night (1 July) and local immersive theatre company Interplay present their take on the cult film Harold and Maude (3 & 4 June) inside their inflatable theatre. Perfect for adventurous kids this May half term is Stig of the Dump (31 May) and intimate Arabic stories in A Tale to Tell (1 June). Drama fans look out for Jean Genet’s The Maids (26 May) and mask theatre in The Best Thing (4 May). Literature lovers we have the very first Northern Short Story Festival (4 June) and sports fanatics can learn how to train for a full length triathlon in Equations for a Moving Body (9 June). Leeds Lads is the centrepiece of our summer season. Driven by Red Ladder Theatre Company, in partnership with Carriageworks Theatre, Leeds Rhinos and Leeds Civic Arts Guild, the show brings together talented community actors from the heart of Leeds and local playwright Anthony Clavane. This is one not to be missed. Enjoy a creative summer at Carriageworks Theatre! Councillor Judith Blake Leader of Council and Executive Member for Economy and Culture www.carriageworkstheatre.org.uk

Barney is staying with his grandparents on the chalk Downs of southern England when he falls over the edge of an old chalk pit and tumbles through the roof of a hidden den. When he looks round he sees Stig, a caveman, with shaggy black hair and bright black eyes. The chalk pit is disused and full of people’s dumped rubbish, which Stig uses to make his home. Barney and Stig get on rather well together. They have to manage without language, as Stig speaks no English, but that doesn’t seem to stop them. Stig becomes Barney’s secret friend, not because Barney doesn’t tell anyone, but because no one believes that Stig is real. They have a great time improving Stig’s den, collecting firewood, going hunting and even catching some burglars who break into Barney’s grandparents’ house. It is nearly 50 years since Stig and Barney’s adventures first saw the light of day, but this timeless children’s classic remains as charming and entertaining as ever.

Equations for a Moving Body is a story about the physiology of endurance – when our brains tell our bodies to stop – and the psychology of carrying on. It is the story about preparing mind and body for a 2.4 mile swim, 112 miles of cycling, then running a marathon. About the people who share that journey with us: family, coaches, friends, ex-boyfriends and the people we swim, ride and run alongside. What carries us to the finish line? What’s left at the end of 141 miles of swimming, cycling and running? Programmed to celebrate the World Triathlon Series in Leeds on 11 – 12 June.

Words and music by Anthony Clavane and Nick Stimson A young woman’s journey into Leeds’ secret, inspiring past. It’s 2016. Tara stands on the steps of Leeds Town Hall on the day the city commemorates the Leeds Pals at the Battle of the Somme. She holds in her hand her great grandfather’s medal for bravery. Why should Tara care about the past when the present seems so bleak? Celebrate Tara’s story as she discovers the sacrifice of her forefathers and how these have moulded the community that surrounds her today.
Breathing life in to the characters of Leeds’ past, this vibrant production transports you from the turmoil and tensions of war, to the rich and multi-cultural city we know today. Leeds Lads is a new play about the people of Leeds past and present – their fears, their love and their friendships, performed by the people of Leeds today for the people of Leeds. West Side Story is the astonishingly moving tale of Tony and Maria, two ‘star-crossed lovers’ who find each other while on opposite sides of rival neighbourhoods.
