CINCO DE MAYO A HISTORY
For many Americans, Cinco de Mayo means enjoying Mexican food and probably a few margaritas. But Cinco de Mayo, which means May 5 in Spanish, is probably one of the most misunderstood Mexican holidays. Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s independence day. Mexican independence is celebrated Sept.16. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over the French forces of Napoleon III on May 5, 1862, at the Battle of Puebla. Mexico had trouble paying back war debts to European countries, and France had come to Mexico to collect that debt. Today, Cinco de Mayo has become more of an American holiday than a Mexican one. But most non-Mexican Americans have “no idea” about the day’s history, said Carlos Tortolero, president of the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago. -usatoday.com

Clark and Jean Paradise Spend Retirement Helping Their Community By: Joe Stroffolino
Toms River - What do you plan on doing when you are in your 70’s? Most people would say ...Be retired! Yes that is the normal answer. This was not the answer for Clark and Jean Paradise. Yes they did retire. They didn’t move to Florida and play golf. They instead decided to start helping others in need. They formed an organization called Your Grandmother’s Cupboard. That was over 13 years ago!
Your Grandmother’s Cupboard is now providing close to 4000 children and adults free clothing, shoes and other items monthly! These are people in desperate need and circumstances. Without the Cupboard they would have no hope. The need grows each year. Clark Paradise says “We are now helping an additional 1000 people each month over last year’s totals! Of the 4000 people we serve each month, approximately 2500 are adult, with the remainder being their young children. These Clark and Jean Paradise with NJ First Lady Mary Pat Christie in 2011 “customers” normally leave with at least one bag embodied what it means to be a hero. Kentucky Derby Origins How a few traditions of the Kentucky Derby came to be
More than just a horse race, the Kentucky Derby has grown into an American cultural event unlike any other since its inaugural running in 1875. Many of the traditions that will be flouted at Churchill Downs this weekend – and at Derby parties across the country – we owe to Matt Winn, who served as the face of the race from 1902 until his death in 1949. “The important, visible signs of the Derby and these romantic ideals of the old South were, if not created, at least promoted by Winn,” says James C. Nicholson, author of “The Kentucky Derby: How the Run for the Roses Became America’s Premier Sporting Event.” Here are how some of those Derby Day traditions got their start: The Roses. The beautiful blanket of 564 roses placed

Mint Juleps. The Kentucky whiskey and mint concoction was a popular drink at the Derby from its start. It became a staple, the legend goes, when a famous Polish actress, Helena Modjeska, ordered the drink at a pre-Derby breakfast at the track and loved it. The Big Hats. The ornate hats worn by women to the race is a relic of the past, a popular fashion at the Derby’s start and now almost a costume for today’s event. Nevertheless, it was tradition used by race promoters like Winn to market the Kentucky Derby to women and make it a see-and-be-seen event. - usnews.com

on the winning horse traces its roots to a strain of roses introduced to America in 1870s. Churchill Downs founder Meriwether Lewis Clark used them for decorations at a post-Derby party and by the 1890s, they became a prop in the post-race presentations, first as bouquet, then as a garland for the winning horse. Bill Curom, who went on to be the president of Churchill Downs, coined the term “The Run for the Roses” in 1925 when he was one of Winn’s favorite sportswriters.

For Biggest Hot Wheels Car Track Loop in Support of Take Your Child To Work Day the company’s Research and Innovation Center in Dearborn in support of Ford’s participation in national Take Your Child to Work Day.
DEARBORN, Mich.– Ford ran circles around the old Hot Wheels® record loop as part of this year’s Take Your Child to Work Day. When the effort was complete, Ford had made a world record attempt with a Hot Wheels car track loop that exceeded 12 feet tall. The world record attempt was the brainchild of Ford dynamometer technician Matt West, who had built increasingly large Hot Wheels loops with his six-year-old son Blade at their home in Monroe, Michigan. The attempt took place in the three-story atrium of
“It started as part-fun, partphysics lesson with my son at home,” said West. “We built one in our playroom, and then built a five-foot-tall loop in our backyard. When people at Ford heard what we were up to, everyone thought it would be a great way to get young people excited about science and engineering by trying to break the world record on Take Your Child to Work Day.” The current record of nine feet, nine inches tall was set in Ohio. West and his friends at Ford successfully made a Mustang Hot Wheels car complete a 12-foot, six-inch loop. “On a track, a Hot Wheels car can only go so fast, so carrying the momentum of the vehicle through an entire loop is harder than you might think,” said West. “In a world where kids are inundated with TVs and tablets, I thought
ONCE -A- YEAR
teaching my son with actual moving vehicle models would be so much more rewarding, and then it took on a life of its own.”
Early on, West and Blade went to work dreaming up the world record-breaking loop. With the help of others at Ford, including John Jaranson, technical expert in interior systems, and Grant Compton, computer-aided design engineer, they created the loop using computer-aided design software called CATIA, which is often used for car design.
Knowing they had to create the super structure out of four-by-eight-foot sheets of plywood, they designed the loop into sections that would get bolted together.
Once designed, the team enlisted the help of Will Brick, general manager of TechShop Detroit, a membershipbased, do-it-yourself workshop and fabrication studio, to bring the digital design files to life. Jaranson is a member of TechShop, thanks to Ford’s innovative relationship with the company, a part-time instructor who helps other members utilize the available tools. The team cut the sheets of plywood using a water jet cutter.
“At TechShop, we like to say, ‘Build your dreams here,’” said Brick. “It was great to help Matt and to work with the Ford team to bring his son’s idea to reality.”
“It’s an honor for Hot Wheels to have inspired Matt West and the Ford team to embark on such an epic world record attempt,” said Chris Down, senior vice president and general manager, Hot Wheels. “Ford and Mattel have a history going back more than four decades. We both have tremendous passion for pushing the limits of design, and we’re happy to be involved in trying to generate enthusiasm for science and technology for kids everywhere.”
With its signature 1:64-scale models, Hot Wheels has created hundreds of Ford Motor Company vehicles, including many of the original 16 Hot Wheels models released in 1968 – a custom Mustang, Thunderbird and Cougar.

Our Gang Player’s presented “Gypsy” at the Barnegat Bengal High School the weekend of May 1-4th. This is Our Gang’s 38th season doing non-profit musical theater in Ocean County. Our Gang Player’s is still run by Sherry Schnepp their Artistic Director. Sherry started the group 38years ago so her daughter and friends had something to do in Barnegat Light. Now it is a well known community theater group with over 300 members. “Gypsy” is a story of a stage mom who wanted to see her daughters name up on the theater marquee in bright lights. Madame Rose (Stacey Schnepp-Stoops) really pushes her youngest daughter, baby June (Amanda Kipila), and let’s her other daughter young Louise, (Nadia Jewel) just be in the background. Rose thinks baby June can be a star! Rose is a very complex character and goes through different trials and tribulations to get her kids noticed. Rose leaves home in Seattle and travels to Los Angeles with her two young girls and she recruited some young newsboys along the way as background dancers. “Let me Entertain You” is a repeated song through out the first Act for June and her Newsboys. When Rose tries to get her new Act on Vaudeville she meets Herbie, (Neil Goldstein). Rose convinces Herbie to be their agent through her smooth talking “ Small World” and good looks. As they travel the country and Herbie books the June and her newsboys at different Vaudeville theaters the girls and newsboys grow up. June, (Ariana Centamore) and Louise (Jessica O’Brien-Roy) now teenagers are still treated like babies. “Dainty June and her Farmboys” show how the act never really changes even after the years. Rose does not see what young women they have become and Herbie can’t make any headway. Herbie makes Rose promises to marry him once June becomes a star and Rose agrees. The two daughters connect through “If Mama Was Married.” Though because all the kids are getting older they want to explore there talents and move on from Madame Rose. Tulsa, (Glenn Parker) creates a duo night club act, “All I Need Is The Girl,” that Louise finds out about. Unaware June and Tulsa elope and run away together to peruse there dreams. All the newsboys also leave to find jobs that pay better. That leaves Louise, Rose and Herbie to find a new direction to go in. Now Rose, who is devastated, decides to make Louise a star. “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” explains how she will turn it all around and there are no worries. Rose decided to make Louise her new June with any means necessary. Louise never wanted to be a star but she wants to make her Mama Rose happy. Herbie loyal to Rose decides to do what he can and stand by there side. Even though Louise’s talent does not compare to June’s, Rose will not give up “Madame Rose’s Toreadorables.” Rose pushes everyone to not give up
and keep trying “Together, Wherever we Go.” Vaudeville is dying and so is the Act. Rose believes more in the Act then wanting to Marry Herbie. Herbie eventually walks out on Rose. Louise gets some tips from the other burlesque dancers. Louise finds a talent in Bulesque theater after being pushed to do it just because it is the star act. Little did Rose expect it would push her daughter Louise, now Gypsy Rose Lee out of her life. Rose eventually cracks and thinks she can make it still as a star, “Rose’s Turn.” Even though June never returns her loyal daughter Gypsy Rose Lee will not turn her back on her mother. This show was one to see for sure. The sets were built by Bruce Baker and made you feel like you were in the 1920’s to 1930’s. The costumes were to period down to the accessories. The acting was super by everyone. Our Gang always puts on Broadway type shows. Where else can you go see a Broadway style show for less then $20 a ticket? The Director of Gypsy was Jessica O’Brien-Roy who also played Adult Louise. “ I am proud of how this show got put together and the talent shown by everyone.” Jessica has been in the group since she was in grade school. Now she is married and a college graduate. Our Gang is lucky and happy to have her back helping and directing shows. If you missed this show please do not miss another. The next show for Our Gang will be in June and is call “How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying.” Jessica will be Directing that show also! You can go on Ourgang.org for information. Also keep an eye out for Our Gang’s summer show “Anything Goes.” Another way to see some of the great talent that was in this show is to see Our Gang Player’s “Treble Makers” sing at the July 12th BlueClaws Game. The Treble Makers have been asked to sing the National Anthem and God Bless America during the seventh inning stretch. You can contact Jennifer Baker at 609-384-0229 if you are interested in buying tickets to the game. Tickets are $11 and children 12 and under eat for free. Sherry Schnepp would like to personally thank David Wintrode for his generous donation every year to Our Gang Player’s. With out donations and ticket sales Our Gang could not keep performing and giving young kids a place to show there talents. Sherry hopes this group makes it another 38 seasons. WHY YOUR CAR
NEEDS A SPRING CHECKUP!
If winter was tough where you live, you can be sure your car suffered the effects of that cold and snow. Now is the time for a spring maintenance checkup to counter the effects of winter and be sure you are ready for a summer road trip. So take your car to a dealership or independent mechanic, if you have one you trust, and get it checked out. The shop will go through a basic check list, but keep in mind some problems that might be overlooked in a routine check. Auto maintenance experts we interviewed suggested watching for these issues: Potholes may have damaged your suspension:
“Potholes are becoming a huge problem,” says Mike Calkins, manager of technical services for AAA. As funds for road repair have been scarce, more city streets have developed crater-like potholes that can do damage. Calkins suggests that if your car doesn’t drive straight ahead when you briefly take your hands off the wheel, make sure your mechanic checks the suspension and the wheel alignment. Cold weather may have damaged engine belts and hoses:
A broken belt or hose can cause problems from losing power to engine overheating, but they are easily overlooked. If you check under the hood before taking the car in for a checkup, look for cracks and peeling on the belts and softening on the hoses. Winter may have caused problems with the oxygen sensor:
You may not be familiar with this engine component, but it is important to gas mileage. This sensor is the top reason the “check engine” light on your dashboard goes on, according to car repair web site CarMD. Because it is involved in setting the fuel mix going into your engine, a faulty oxygen sensor can reduce your gas mileage by as much as 40 percent, according to CarMD experts. While replacing this sensor typically costs about $250 in parts and labor, it may help you avoid more expensive repairs later. While watching out for these potentially overlooked problems, make sure your auto shop or dealer goes over the basics. Batteries:
While cold weather is hard on cars, don’t feel too smug if you live in a warmer climate. Summer heat causes its own problems. Mike Calkins of AAA says his organization’s roadside service assists about 1.6 million motorists with failed batteries every summer. Many auto shops and auto parts stores will give you a free test to measure the strength of your battery. Tires:
Make sure your tires are wearing evenly, counsels Bob Madison, director of technical services at CarMD. And keep them inflated to recommended pressure, he adds, since underinflated tires can hurt gas mileages. Most cars have the recommended tire inflation numbers on a plaque visible when the driver’s door is open.

When Buying New Tires
the sidewall for an alphanumeric series that begins with “DOT.” The last four digits are the week and year the tire was made: “1209” means the tire was built in the 12th week of 2009.)
Buying new tires ranks pretty far down on the list of things most people want to do with their time and money, right next to replacing a failed water heater. While you might overspend on your next water heater, at least there will be a flow of warm water to wash the pain away. Not so with tires. A poor choice of replacement rubber will haunt you every driving day for the next three to six years. The wrong tires will pound your neck, assault you with constant whining, cause your beloved sporty car to handle worse than a pickup, or scare you witless when it rains. Plus, buying new rubber is intimidating for the unprepared: Tires appear identical. Each manufacturer claims all its tires are superlative in every area. All cost more than you’d budgeted, which was “nothing.” And newer vehicles require replacement components for their tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). But this process doesn’t have to be so painful. These are our simple tips to make the tire-buying experience a little better. If You Were Happy With Your Old Tires If you like the way your car performs, the answer is easy: Buy the exact same model you had. There’s a good reason—the tire and car companies spend nearly $1 million to develop a tire with the attributes that make you like your car. The original equipment tire was selected to highlight the vehicle’s good features and, often, smooth over weaknesses. If you’re satisfied with your car, go with tires that exactly match the original equipment tires. Tell the counter person that close isn’t good enough. If your complaint is that your vehicle lacks traction in the rain, especially in deep water, think back to when the car was new. Did it handle well in the rain back then? If so, your problem is probably low tread depth, which means you don’t need different tires, just new ones. (Not sure whether it’s time to replace the tires? There’s no consensus among car- and tiremakers on acceptable tire life, but keep a close eye on tires that have been on a vehicle, used as a spare, or stored in a hot or sunny location for more than six years. For a tire’s “born on” date, check
When you try to replace your tires with the same model that came on the car, you might run into sticker shock—original equipment tires can be expensive. However, carmakers offer every vehicle with at least two brands of tires. Some Web surfing will reveal the alternate brand. Keep in mind, though, that tires developed for a different trim level of your vehicle likely will be very different from those on your model. The tires for the sporty edition will ride harsher and have little traction in snow. If you want to save money by putting tires from the base model on your sporty version, they may make it handle like, well, the base model. You’ll also need to take tire life into account. If you drive a sporty car, 20,000 miles is about all you can expect. Short tire longevity is one of the prices you pay for driving a vehicle with power and handling once reserved for full-on race cars. Today, even conservative cars, crossovers, and sport utility vehicles boast horsepower once unmatched by ultrahigh-performance cars. In addition, safety, comfort, and entertainment features have added hundreds of pounds to the average vehicle. Unleashing those extra horses— and stopping and turning all that weight—takes its toll on tires. If your original equipment tires are not available, both online tire stores and the tire manufacturer will suggest reasonable facsimiles. They will not duplicate your experience exactly, but simply having new tires, much like a fresh hair style, will likely overcome the differences. If You Want Something New There’s hope for those who are unhappy with the way their car rides or handles. The trend of large-diameter wheels and low-profile tires has many accidental performance buyers complaining about ride comfort. A switch from ultrahigh-performance tires to those labeled “grand touring” or “touring” might soften the ride a bit. Check the consumer reviews at online tire sellers. Know that the change unavoidably will make handling less precise and reduce grip.

It’s easier if you want more performance from your car: Switch from the original all-season tires to summer ones (or, as they should be called, three-season tires). They’ll provide a lot more grip, wet or dry, at the expense of a harsher ride and no traction in the snow. The most important rule: Do your research before you show up. Your trip to the tire store will be far less intimidating if you first assess your situation and budget, and then spend an evening surfing the sites of tire manufacturers, online tire sellers, and especially your local tire store. - popularmechanics.com

HERITAGE to Benefit
THE OF LINCOLN MOTORCARS
The early 20th century was marked by constant change. It was an era of war and peace, great prosperity and deep struggle, and the rapidly shifting social and economic landscapes made it an exciting time to be an innovator. To make an impact, the era’s innovators needed a strong vision, the ability to see beyond their own lifetime into an uncertain future. Edsel Ford, the only son of American industrialist Henry Ford, was one such visionary. Under his leadership, Ford acquired The Lincoln Motor Company ten years before the Great Depression, leading it through the nation’s most devastating economic crisis to date. He oversaw the production of some of the most beautiful motorcars ever built. Yet, Edsel’s vision extended far beyond the assembly line; to credit him as only an industrial leader would be selling him short. Edsel had an eye for design, craftsmanship, and beauty. And most importantly, he saw that cars could be more than just a means to get from one place to another. Edsel saw that they had the potential to be as distinctive as the people who drove them. This vision for superior automotive craftsmanship that has stood the test of time. Edsel Ford was born in Detroit, Michigan on November 6, 1893. The only son of Henry and Clara Ford, his early childhood years were relatively quiet. Clara cared for the home and Henry worked at a factory in Detroit. They lived in a modest house with a backyard and a shed where Henry worked on his “horseless carriage.” Edsel’s father founded The Ford Motor Company in 1903. Within a few short years, the Ford’s quiet, middle class lifestyle disappeared as Henry transformed from backyard tinkerer into a titan of American industry. The young Edsel inherited his father’s penchant for motorcars. He received his first automobile, a 1903 Model A Ford Runabout, at age ten and he spent much of his free time at work with his father. He spent as much time on the sawdust covered factory floor as he did in the boardroom. Though he had a head for business, the motor car was Edsel’s first true love. Meanwhile, another industrialist by the name of Henry Leland was hard at work at his own Detroit
auto plant. In 1917, Leland wanted to help the government build plane engines for the war effort, but his partner refused. Not one to take “no” for an answer, Leland quit his position and started a company of his own. The first machines to roll off of his assembly line weren’t cars at all, but 6,000 warplane-ready Liberty engines. But after the war’s end, there was little need for Leland’s Henry and Edsel Ford, 1921 engines and business tapered off. Leland reinvented his company from a maker of motors to motorcars and in January of 1920, the Lincoln Motor Car Company was born. Though well-conceived, Leland’s efforts to save his company were short lived. By the summer of 1920, the American economy fell into recession and Leland’s high-priced Lincolns fell out of favor. The Fords were in a unique position to purchase his company and save the legacy. Edsel’s father Henry was indifferent. But for Edsel, acquiring the Lincoln Motor Car Company would be a chance to build a legacy of his own, guided by his unique vision of what an automaker could be. Under Edsel, Ford purchased The Lincoln Motor Company in 1922. He would become its new acting president. “Father makes the most popular cars in the world. I want to make the best cars in the world.”- Edsel Ford The newly acquired Lincoln Motor Company posed both a challenge and opportunity for Edsel. While the first generation of automakers perfected the mechanics of the automobile, building cars that were stylish and functional would be the industry’s next challenge. Leland and his company had built a reputation for producing fine, reliable automobiles packed with power; Leland’s Lincolns were equipped with V8 engines and could easily propel the heavy steel frames to cruising speeds of 75mph, notable distinctions for their time. But when it came to styling, their customers were left wanting. For Edsel, combining his aesthetic vision with Lincoln quality would be crucial to bringing forth a new type of motorcar that the world had never seen. “Well designed objects win the race for public favor.”- Edsel Ford Edsel passed away on May 26, 1943 at the age of 49. His time at The Lincoln Motor Company was short—a mere two decades—but his impact has been far reaching. Edsel’s legacy lives on through the company he built, the motorcars he inspired, but most of all, through his ideas on using external design references and working with craftsmen of the highest artistry to see those designs through. These are the very ideas that continue to guide The Lincoln Motor Company today.

McConaughey’s just keep livin
Foundation
DEARBORN, Mich.– The ongoing collaboration between The Lincoln Motor Company and actor Matthew McConaughey enters a new phase as the luxury automaker will donate to the Academy Award® winner’s just keep livin Foundation. This year, for the first time, Lincoln dealers will have the option to choose McConaughey’s just keep livin Foundation as the first national charity to be part of this program. For every test drive taken in the new 2016 Lincoln MKX midsize crossover, on sale later this year, $20 will go toward the just keep livin Foundation. “The tremendous work Matthew does through his just keep livin Foundation is one of the reasons why he is such a great fit with Lincoln,” said David Rivers, Lincoln U.S. Marketing Communications Manager. “Matthew is authentic, warm and genuine, and of course a great storyteller. We’re pleased to add our support by making a national charity part of our Driven to Give program for the first time.” Test drives that support charities are a cornerstone of Lincoln’s philanthropic efforts. Through its Driven to Give program, Lincoln has donated more than $4 million to schools and charitable organizations nationwide since 2011. “A key reason why I chose to collaborate with Lincoln is because it is a brand that works hard to make a difference,” said McConaughey. “On behalf of the just keep livin Foundation, we genuinely appreciate this added support from Lincoln, and look forward to reaching and assisting even more young people going forward.” The just keep livin Foundation, started by McConaughey and his wife Camila in 2008, is dedicated to empowering high school students by providing them with the tools to lead active lives and make healthy choices for a better future. It works with schools to reach the maximum number of teenagers with the greatest needs, partnering with other non-profit organizations in each local community to implement after-school fitness and wellness programs in inner-city high schools.
