A NEED WE FEED RECEIVES “CAUSEWHEELS” DONATION By Kaitlyn Strohmeier, Causeway We are happy to continue, due to overwhelming community response, with our 2020 campaign – “CauseWheels” Monthly Vehicle Donation Program - to help our neighbors and positively impact Ocean County. In 2019 Causeway had two requests for vehicle donations to local non-profit organizations. We were able to accommodate each of these requests. This prompted an idea to follow up 2019’s 50th Anniversary $10,000 Monthly Grant program. We are proud to announce our February winner, A Need We Feed! A Need We Feed, Inc is a registered 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization based right here in Ocean County. They are an organization that prepares, package (Left to Right) – David Wintrode – General Manager, Corey Gellis – General Sales Manager, Joe Stroffolino – Director of Advertising and Marketing, Terry Collins – Sales and delivers hot meals for those Consultant, Amy McKeon - Volunteer Coordinator for ANWF, Danielle Bisignano - Volunteer at ANWF, Maryann Conniff-Perez - Lead Volunteer for Meal Distribution and in need. This includes Veterans, Events at ANWF, Samantha Bloschock - Volunteer Driver for ANWF, Eveline Principe – Volunteer at ANWF, Barbara Marzarella – Volunteer at ANWF, Frank Davis - Board children and their families. The truck we are donating will help A Need We Feed by transporting supplies and meals! Currently, their volunteers are utilizing their own personal vehicles to pick up meals. They are always looking for ways to help their community. They buy their meals from struggling restaurants in the area. Since COVID19, they have purchased 27,000 meals with a spend of $268,000.00 from local restaurants!

Member/Head of Fundraising Committee for ANWF, Tom Kozlowski - Lead Volunteer for Meal Pickups and Deliveries at ANWF, Dave Wintrode – President of The Causeway Family of Dealerships, Jim Sigurdson – Executive Director of Meals on Wheels, Cliff Baker - President of A Need We Feed and Patti Trustan - Director of Development for ANWF.

Once again, we want to send out a HUGE thank you to our friends Meals on Wheels of Ocean County. Executive Director Jim Sigurdson has now donated SEVEN vehicles to Causeway. Jim knows we will find the perfect non-profit that will put each vehicle to good use. A Need We Feed started on

October 29, 2012, when Hurricane Sandy devastated many homes and businesses along the New Jersey shoreline. While construction may have rebuilt these structures; A Need We Feed was born and restored comfort, hope, and confidence in people giving back to their community. Our story isn’t just quite that simple, there were many grass roots initiatives along the way. “In the last eight years, we have grown from a basic foundational organization to a registered 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization that prepares, packages, and delivers over 11,000 hot meals a year to veterans, children, and families who are in need while partnering with many organizations within the community. A Need We Feed is a family-based organization and giving back to families in our community is paramount. Each year we fundraise and collect over $12,000 in toys during our Christmas toy drive. In the Spring, we provide Easter baskets filled with candy and goodies to many families in addition to offering a full Easter dinner. You will find our organization delivering meals to our veterans in distress, our homebound seniors, our children, and their families who are in need.

Partnerships are largely what helps us succeed; our partnerships within the community have grown and continue to flourish. Together we join forces with immediate responses when called upon. Some of our partners include organizations such as Department of Child Protection and Permanency, Oceans Family Success Center, Seeds of Service, Harbor House, Ocean Mental Health, MA22, Just Believe Inc., Recalibrate, Big Brothers Big Sisters, JUST BE, Shore Vineyard Church’s soup kitchen, American Legions, CSM Robert Gallagher Charitable Foundation and Code Blue. We are always open and looking to grow our partnerships because we strongly believe many hands make light of the work. Today we are setting unprecedented levels of aid to not only our community in need, but also to our food service partners by supporting local

restaurants during the COVID 19 pandemic.” A touching Story told by Cliff Baker: Feeding the Sandy First Responders During the Sandy rebuilding, I (Cliff) found myself visiting a restaurant that used to be in Toms River, Boston’s, I noticed two military men sitting at the bar looking displaced. Making the connection to my time served in the USN in the late 1980’s through early 1990’s, I introduced myself and struck up a conversation. I discovered that they were here from Kentucky helping to ‘restore the shore’. Thanksgiving was three weeks away, so I asked if they had plans and to my surprise they didn’t. At that moment, it hit me! I invited all of the military and first responders to my home for Thanksgiving. I collected everyone’s information and the realization set in, I had a lot of preparation to bring this to fruition. I needed to find a chef with motivation, connections, and a big heart. I reached out to my good friend Chef Mike Jurusz from Atlantic Bar and Grill. Next was planning and organizing. Volunteers and donations began to pour in from all over: equipment and supply donations from all the factories I worked with at Singer Equipment Co, food suppliers that Chef Mike worked with sent food, and an old High School friend and Stop & Shop Manager, Mark Blackwell stepped up to get all of his Stop & Shop stores involved. Restaurant customers and industry friends offered whatever we needed, soon we had enough turkey, mashed potatoes, and vegetables to feed 350 people. The tent went up to seat 100 people in the back yard; the garage was transformed into a buffet line with 35 volunteers ready to serve. All of that changed in a moment when a call came in that martial law was enforced and volunteers working in Seaside were not allowed to cross the bridge. One of the 35 volunteers on hand that day was a Toms River Volunteer Fire Fighter. He worked to get a firetruck that would show up in my cul-de-sac

within moments and deliver food to the island. Our team quickly jumped into action and packed up all the food into individual containers, loaded the truck and off they went! Expanding the Feeding In December 2015, A Need We Feed grew a little larger. My son Jared and his friend were making their first delivery. They knocked on a hotel room door to deliver a meal to a veteran during the Christmas meal delivery. The veteran opened the door with a look of shock, Jared responded with “we are from A Need We Feed, here is a hot meal, Merry Christmas!” The veteran told the boys that they saved his life, he had his pistol locked and loaded and was ready to pull the trigger, ready to end his life. That day Jared and his friend each took a meal, sat down with the veteran, and ate Christmas dinner with him. It was upon hearing this story that I realized our meals are more than a container of food; these deliveries give people something to look forward to, these random acts of kindness are signs of hope that good things will come. Immediately we decided Thanksgiving and Christmas meal offerings were just not enough, in 2016 we implemented an Easter feeding and a summer Barbeque. Knowing that we work off of strictly donations, we knew we needed to spread these events out and give ourselves time to generate funds and supplies for the next meal. Feeding the ‘Littles’ In the Fall of 2018, my daughter, Mackenzie, learned through her school that the Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) program was looking for an organization to provide a weekly meal for the ‘littles’. Mackenzie organized a meeting with the school’s charity coordinator, and we discussed an opportunity where we launched our ‘meal and mentor program’. A Need We Feed partnered with local restaurants to get a discounted weekly after school meal. Fast forwarding to 2020, we deliver meals to three Toms River locations; two of the schools are

RECENT FDA DESIGNATION PUTS PROMISING CANCER TREATMENT TOWARD MARKET APPROVAL

In November 2020, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted Regenerative Medicine Advanced Therapy (RMAT) designation for a promising engineered cellular therapy called AB-205. AB-205 acts promptly to repair injured vascular niches of organs to prevent or reduce severe toxicities in patients who have Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) or non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) undergoing high dose chemotherapy and autologous stem cell transplantion. AB-205 represents a new approach to repairing damaged organs and tissues and consists of proprietary universal human engineered cord endothelial (E-CEL®) cells. This novel approach was based on groundbreaking research started in 2005 by Jason Butler, Ph.D., a research scientist at Hackensack Meridian’s Center for Discovery and Innovation (CDI). “The CDI is at the forefront of pioneering research that translates to improved care and quality of life for patients at Hackensack University Medical Center, and around the world,” said Robert C. Garrett, FACHE, CEO, Hackensack Meridian Health. AB-205’s RMAT designation is based on

the drug’s Phase 1b/2 clinical trial results. The John Theurer Cancer Center (JTCC) at Hackensack University Medical Center participated in the in the Phase 2 AB-205 trial that led to the RMAT designation. Two JTCC patients were enrolled in the study. “At Hackensack University Medical Center, our patients have access to some of the most promising, groundbreaking clinical trials that are advancing the field of cancer care,” said Ihor S. Sawczuk, M.D., FACS, northern market regional president at Hackensack Meridian Health and the chief research officer of the network. “AB-205 is a perfect example of how our researchers are helping to bring treatments from the lab to the clinic for the benefit of our patients.” According to a press release from Angiocrine Bioscience Inc., the clinical-stage biotechnology company that is developing the drug, the RMAT designation is an important step in accelerating the development of AB205 toward its first market approval.

“The FDA RMAT designation is awarded to regenerative medicine therapies that have the potential to address serious unmet medical needs and provides AB205 the opportunity for an accelerated review with the FDA,” said Scott Rowley, M.D., of the Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapy Program, at Hackensack University Medical Center’s John Theurer Cancer Center and principal investigator on the AB-205 trial. “Only a small number of novel products receive this designation each year.”

AB-205 , is is administered intravenously on the same day that the patient’s own blood stem cells are infused, after a week of highdose chemotherapy and radiation to eradicate cancer cells. By repairing vascular niches in healthy organs, AB-205 cells aid in the restoration of the body’s natural ability to heal itself following myelosuppressive therapies including chemotherapy and radiation. Examples of vascular niches, which have significant restorative capabilities, include the bone marrow and the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.

SINGLE-PORT ROBOTIC SURGERY PROMOTES EXPERT TONSIL CANCER TREATMENT

In 2019, Michael Rodriguez of Weehawken, New Jersey, began to experience sore throats that would come and go every few weeks. When the pain started to worsen, Michael went to an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist for a checkup.

When a throat swab to check for a bacterial infection found nothing, Michael’s ENT ordered imaging tests and referred him to Chan Park, M.D., an ENT at Hackensack University Medical Center specializing in robotic head and neck surgery. Within a week, Michael scheduled an appointment with Dr. Park and learned the cause of his sore throat episodes: tonsil cancer. Dr. Park said Michael’s tonsil cancer was caused by a strain of human papillomavirus (HPV) that is also associated with cervical cancer in women. Michael’s tonsil cancer likely developed slowly over many years. Michael However, due to the lack Rodriguez, of a screening test to ENT patient check for precancerous cell changes in the throat, tonsil cancer often goes undetected until it begins to cause symptoms or spreads to other areas of the body. “When I heard the diagnosis, it was overwhelming — it was like I was in the room, but not in the room,” said Michael. Nearly all sexually active people will get human papillomavirus (HPV) at some time in their life. HPV itself isn’t cancer but it can cause changes in the body that lead to cancer. HPV infections usually go away by themselves but, when they don’t, they can cause certain kinds of cancer to develop. These include cervical cancer in women, penile cancer in men, and anal cancer in both women and men. HPV can also cause cancer in the back of the throat, including the base of the tongue and tonsils (called oropharyngeal cancer). Fortunately, Michael had a strong family support system, including his husband, Christopher, and Christopher’s mother, who is a nurse. “Christopher was with me every step of the way, and having a nurse in the family helped us to understand what questions we should ask and how the treatment process would work,” said Michael. Signing Up for Robotic Surgery After performing a biopsy to confirm

Michael’s diagnosis, Dr. Park recommended surgery to remove the tumor in his tonsils.

“Dr. Park said he would perform robot-assisted surgery, which would allow him to remove the cancer with greater precision and a smaller incision,” said Michael. “He also told me there would be less pain, a faster recovery, fewer complications and less bleeding with robotic surgery, so I signed up immediately.” In August 2019, Dr. Park performed Michael’s transoral robotic surgery (TORS) procedure using the da Vinci SP single port surgical system. The da Vinci SP has a single cannula that contains multiple small surgical instruments that can easily reach the back of the throat. The single port robotic surgical system also includes a small camera that transmits an image of the surgical area to the surgical console where Dr. Park sits to operate the robot, giving him a 3D, magnified view. “Thanks to minimally invasive robotic surgery, we can now see and remove tumors of the tongue and throat that were previously difficult or impossible to reach,” said Dr. Park. “The enhanced visibility allowed me to see the margins of Michael’s tumor very clearly so I could get rid of the cancer with minimal damage to the surrounding tissues.” That enhanced visibility also revealed cancerous tissue in a portion of Michael’s tongue and in the back of his throat, which Dr. Park also removed. Dr. Park also removed Michael’s cancerous lymph nodes during a procedure called a neck dissection. “For the first few days after surgery, swallowing was painful,” said Michael. “I could eat better after about the first week, but it took about two weeks for my voice to come back.” A few weeks after surgery, Michael started simultaneous chemotherapy and radiation treatments. He had his final treatment session in November 2019. “It took a while to come back from that,” said Michael. “However, it slowly got easier to go up steps and hold conversations, and eventually, I was sleeping less and feeling less nauseous.” Cancer-Free After One Year But despite the challenges he faced, Michael said his family support system and the staff at Hackensack University Medical Center helped him get through it. “The radiation and medical oncology staff helped everyone laugh and stay positive, and I can see how that helps people to navigate their treatment and move

That was when the teacher noticed one of the girls, 9, kept fidgeting. She could not seem to sit still or pay attention. The teacher told her to focus, and the girl abruptly started crying. Her cries turned to sobs; she could not stop crying on the Zoom call. That was when the girl made a stunning confession, in front of her whole virtual class: She was starving. There wasn’t enough food in her home and she was really, really hungry. That story was relayed to Patch by Kim Guadagno, the former New Jersey lieutenant governor and Republican gubernatorial candidate, who now runs Fulfill, the food bank of Monmouth and Ocean counties. “It turns out the girl’s mother lost her job when all the restaurants shut down

in March 2020. She hasn’t been able to work since March, and she does not qualify for unemployment or benefits,” Guadagno said. “Can you imagine the trauma this little girl was going through to burst into tears and say this in front of a whole class of her peers?” The girl’s mother is a single mother, and she is one of three young children in the home. Guadagno did not want to reveal which school district this occurred in, as she said the pandemic has caused hunger to skyrocket throughout Monmouth and Ocean counties, often in towns or pockets just a few miles away from million-dollar mansions and beachfront second homes. “Food scarcity is in Neptune. It’s in Asbury Park, Red Bank, Freehold and sections of Toms River, sections of the outer islands, sections of Stafford Township, parts of Lakewood,” said the former lieutenant governor. “You don’t believe it driving through Monmouth, but it’s here, especially now.”

A social worker from the girl’s school made a call to Fulfill’s Neptune headquarters

that

same

afternoon.

Guadagno said her team is used to hearing sad stories, but this particular incident “broke our hearts. Every single one of our team members sprang into action that day.” The social worker drove to Fulfill to pick up some of the emergency food boxes it always keeps on hand for situations such as this. Fulfill also paid local Monmouth County restaurants to deliver hot, cooked meals to the family. And the girl’s mother has since been working with Fulfill to qualify the family for food stamps. “The hardest part of all of this is asking for help,” Guadagno said. “We are desperate to reach families such as this so we can get them the services they need, so they don’t get this far down the road in a crisis.”

SIX 2021 HONDA MODELS EARN IIHS TOP SAFETY RATINGS

Six Honda models have earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) TOP SAFETY PICK (TSP) rating or better for 2021, with three, Accord, Insight and Odyssey achieving the pinnacle TOP SAFETY PICK+ (TSP+) rating. Contributing to the top ratings, the 2021 Accord, two Civic models (Sedan and Hatchback), CR-V, Insight and Odyssey each achieve the highest possible rating of “GOOD” in all six IIHS crashworthiness tests. In addition, all feature Honda Sensing® driver-assistive and safety technology as standard equipment, earning “SUPERIOR” ratings for vehicle-to-vehicle frontal crash prevention. Honda Sensing® is now available or standard on every Honda automobile model, and there are well over four million Honda vehicles on U.S. roads today featuring this comprehensive suite of safety and driver-assistive technologies, which includes Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™) with Pedestrian Detection; Forward Collision Warning; Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) incorporating Lane Departure Warning (LDW); Lane Keeping Assist System

(LKAS); and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). All Honda vehicles also benefit from Honda’s proprietary Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure, designed to protect occupants in a wide variety of frontal collisions, along with advanced supplemental restraint systems, including pretensioning front seatbelts, and front, side, knee and sidecurtain airbags. To earn the 2021 TSP award, a vehicle must earn “GOOD” crashworthiness ratings in all test modes, including in the challenging passengerside small overlap test. A top-rated vehicle must also offer front crash prevention that earns an “ADVANCED” or “SUPERIOR” rating in both vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian testing, as well as “GOOD” or “ACCEPTABLE” ratings for available headlights; while TSP+ rated vehicles must achieve the same “GOOD” or “ACCEPTABLE” rating for their standard headlights. Separately, every Honda model that has been fully evaluated in the NHTSA’s 2021 model year NCAP testing has received a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score.

Hyundai Lands Seven Vehicles on Car and Driver Editors’ Choice List Hyundai has landed seven products onto the Car and Driver Editors’ Choice list representing this year’s standard of excellence. The Hyundai Accent, Elantra, Kona, Kona EV, Sonata, Palisade and Veloster N join the prestigious list out of more than 400 cars, trucks, crossovers and SUVs that Car and Driver editors test, rate, and rank in each of 32 market segments. “Having ambitious product goals has allowed us to deliver products that meet consumer needs. The seven Hyundai products featured by Car and Driver on their annual Editors’ Choice list showcases our commitment to delivering outstanding vehicles,” said Olabisi Boyle, vice president, Product Planning and Mobility Strategy, Hyundai Motor North America. Eligibility for the Car and Driver Editors’ Choice list includes only vehicles that the Car and Driver staff has

driven. “This is the list of those we would recommend to our friends and family,” said Sharon Silke Carty, editor-inchief, Car and Driver. “The vehicles we think are reliable, safe, and fun to drive.” Car and Driver conducts rigorous instrumented testing on hundreds of vehicles each year. Those results are but one element considered for earning a spot on the Editors’ Choice list. The other criteria used to choose the vehicles for the Editors’ Choice list includes the rankings each vehicle earns within its market segment and editors’ subjective evaluations of each vehicle’s performance, value, and how well it fulfils its intended mission. Each vehicle Car and Driver tests is ultimately given a rank in its market segment versus its competitors. That rank can be found on each vehicle’s 2021 make-model page under the heading “Where This Vehicle Ranks.”

HYUNDAI HAS SEVEN 2021 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ AND TOP SAFETY PICK AWARDS

Hyundai has 7 combined Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) 2021 TOP SAFETY PICK PLUS (TSP+) and TOP SAFETY PICK (TSP)-rated vehicles in its lineup. “Achieving an IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK for our vehicles demonstrates our commitment to safety and occupant protection,” said Brian Latouf Chief Safety Officer, Hyundai Motor North America. “We are very pleased with these results and the award winning safety performance of our vehicles.”

Hyundai has several new and significantly enhanced models launching later this year that IIHS has yet to test.
